Fallowcrest is heading back up the stairs at this point, but as Turchuk tries to sort out the books, one hits the floor and that's the second loud thump he's heard. He calls back down the steps. "I have a lunch appointment, but I need those books IN-TACT. Please be careful with them!"
OOC:
Don't be afraid to switch out between shelves so that you're making the checks you're the best at.

Turchuk whirls and steps towards S'sylin and the aforementioned shadow. "Friend S'sylin, behind you!"
Apr 20, 2024 7:45 am

Astrid looks up from her work.
What is going on? This is not difficult you guys!
Apparently, she was the only one getting work done. The others were tipping over bookshelves, spilling earthquakes and now summoning creatures from the shadow dimension.
OOC:
Tell me if I should stop with the AI artwork. I'm messing around with some code to display the images a little smaller

S'sylin looked up from his deep contemplation on the nature of shelves as the simian brute yelled for him to watch out. Watch out for what? this was simply a library. He looked around...
Apr 23, 2024 3:04 pm
... and turned just in time to feel the icy fingers of death upon his neck. At least S'sylin doesn't panic and has time to dodge the attack before it becomes fully realized.

The shadow seems to be the shape of a man, simply one who isn't there, or at least, one you can see through. There's really not time to make a full-fledged assessment of the situation if you don't want it to start murdering your fellow students.
OOC:
Since this is a surprise, we're going to proceed in Lookout order for the first round, and then switch to Initiative order. (Where PCs are in order adjacent, we'll just assume those happen in whatever order is most efficacious for you.) The Shadow has already gone, so those of you who have two turns before his next one, go ahead and use them now.

d20+3 : (1) + 3 = 4

d10+3 : (3) + 3 = 6

OOC:
@Falconloft I announce my turn and you work it in, yes?
Turchuk grabs his staff from where he'd propped it against the shelves and swings into action, literally, swinging the staff around his shoulders and at the shadow creature, hoping it's something he can hurt with his weapon.

Rolls

Quarterstaff to hit - (1d20+4)

(14) + 4 = 18

Quarterstaff damage - (1d8+2)

(6) + 2 = 8

OOC:
@JoshuaMabry - Correct. That usually works better than trying to get everyone to go in order and all the waiting that that includes. Also, if you guys ever want to talk about who goes first so you can combine effects, that's cool too.

Hey creepy shadow dude. Your existence is like a void – empty and utterly forgettable.
She followups with: And even ghosts roll their eyes when they see you
Disappointedly the shadow either doesn't understand her or does not realise that her words is meant for him.
OOC:
dammit, saved both

Verin, startled by the form appearing, hastily draws her blade... only to have it slide out of the scabbard and onto the ground at her feet.

She quickly squats and grabs the handle of her rapier. Maybe no one saw that.

Rolls

Attack (Rapier) - (1d20+5)

(1) + 5 = 6

OOC:
I read the turn over horizontally instead of vertically and I was horribly confused.
S'sylin recovered quickly, seeing the shade and avoiding its deadly grasp. He knew a bit about such spectres (admittedly, more than most folk would consider reasonable) and he has sure that he did not wish to be touched by it. He also knew that a sword wasn't likely going to do much against it but since he had nothing better at hand, he swung with it regardless..

"Help me you bumbling buffoons!"

Rolls

Attack 1 (superior longsword) - (1d20+6)

(9) + 6 = 15

Damage 1 - (1d10+6)

(8) + 6 = 14

Attack 2 (superior longsword) - (1d20+6)

(3) + 6 = 9

Damage 2 - (1d10+6)

(8) + 6 = 14

S'sylin was only half right, one of those attacks wasn't going to do much against the shadow. The other one did hit, kind of. He could feel a sort of faint pull against his sword as he swung, like ripping through muslin with a good pair of shears.

Turchuk is right behind him, and he too feels that strange pull when his quarterstaff swings through what would have been an impact on something with a real body.

The others aren't so lucky in their attacks.

The shadow, for its part, sways through the attacks and tries again to close it's claws around the neck of the dragonborn in front of it.
OOC:
You know now that physical attacks are going to only halfway hit. So, half damage.

And the dice just hate EVERYONE right now. PCs are up.

Rolls

Shadowy Claws vs S'sylin's neck: attack, damage - (d20+3, 1d10+3)

d20+3 : (4) + 3 = 7

1d10+3 : (3) + 3 = 6

Holding her rapier firmly so as not to make an ass of herself for a third time in even fewer minutes, she thrusts at the shadowy figure.

"Fuck OFF!"

Undead or Fiend? - (1d8)

This specter had it out for him for some reason. S'sylin kept dodging the Shadow's grasping extremities, but he knew his luck would run out soon. He needed to buy more time for himself. And if that meant that the others became a bit more aware of his abilities over such beings, then, well, so be it!

"HALT, WRAITH!"
OOC:
S'sylin casts Command on the shadow, with the Halt command. (on a failed save, the target doesn't move and takes no actions.) DC 12 Wisdom saving throw.

With no other option Turchuk again brings his staff around into the shadow.

Rolls

Quarterstaff damage - (1d8+2)

(6) + 2 = 8

While Verin's sword itself might not do much on its own, the magic that infuses it is another story. Her attack hits firmly, as if she were simply attacking a training dummy, and the feedback that reverberates along her rapier is audible. It looks as if it's doubled over, but any visible sign of the effect is gone a moment later - though Verin is sure she hurt it, in that weird way that such things as this can be hurt. It's not enough though. It doesn't really even seem to care about getting hit by Turchuk, although he knows he made contact. As S'sylin attempts to command it, you get the first sense that this thing used to be alive.

It laughs.

"Halt yourself, lizard. I will stop when I wish." The voice is like an icy fingernail dragging down the chalkboard of your spine. "I will stop when you are mine." And with that, the entity releases a burst of dark energy at everyone around it, though it fades before it reaches Astrid. When it clears, the shadow is gone, but it must be here somewhere still.

Do you get back to packing books, or go in search of it? Not really technically your job to hunt monsters right now, but leaving it alone might be more dangerous than hunting it.
OOC:
S'sylin, Turchuk, Verin, take 8 damage and your movement speed is halved, DC 12 Dex save for half damage.

S'sylin managed to bring up his shield in time as the wave of dark energy rolled over him, saving him the brunt of its malign influence. Then as he reared up to strike, he found his foe gone.
"An intelligent undead? Here? Somehow our employer glossed over that bit of the job!" the dark one said irritably.
"And it's dragon, not lizard!" he shouted at the walls.
