Western Remnants

Mar 26, 2024 1:58 am
Heading west you move through a grass field just outside the expedition camp walls. After a short walk down the well worn road you reach the beginning of the mashes and soon the swamp itself. Ahead you see a guard tower. A couple of guards lounge at the base with another couple up in the lookout.

The guards warn you that though there is a road and it is much safer than before the swamp is still a dangerous place. They point out the waters and thick vegetation hide a variety of local wildlife. These threats range from large alligators, swarms of fish that will strip you to the bones in seconds, poisonous snakes, and the ever-present flies.

The two guards wave you on through as you continue west. The road continues on the far side of the second tower, which is taller and of sturdier construction with four guards, however the road dwindles to a simple track just wide enough for a single horse cart. As you travel you see a variety of plant and animal life. Snakes, insects, frogs, lizards, water rats, squirrels, and an occasional larger beast you have learned are referred to as "Dinosaurs". These large beasts are often hunted for meat by many of the intelligent species that moved into the area causing most of them to have learned to not wander too close to the road. Turning north then west you continue on following the path till the far end of the swamp is in sight.

Beyond the swamp are high grasses with clumps of trees and a few hills. The lush grass must be a common grazing area as your spot a few dinosaur herds. The main trail heads west but you soon find a side trail heading SW through some trees.

Looking over the map you secured from the clerk you ascertain you are at the western edge of the swamp just west of the Manor Ruins (4)
on the dotted trail just above the camera icon
[ +- ] Image of Area map
Looking out over the west you see knee to waist high grass with clumps of bushes and trees spotting the area. Low rolling hills add to the difficulty of seeing very far. The hills seem to be somewhat dryer and tend to be more overgrown. Throughout it all the number and variety of the dinosaurs increases. So far the herds have been small, ranging from 6 to 12. However you can see dozens in some of the larger herds further out over the hilly grasslands.

The hers you spot havve several varieties of donosaur. The largest are beasts larger than some buildings with lang neck that are grazing on tree tops. North by the river are some cattle sized beasts wading and swimming as well as some bird like versions of the beasts. Others if varying sizes graze further to the west and south.

Without taking his eyes off them, he replies to Blornvid nope.

Ealdwig is pulled out of his trance hearing Karrik's comment about getting closer. Incredulously he says, are you mad? Closer?

Ealdwig keeps his head on a swivel the rest of the trip, figuring at any moment something can come out of the high grass and eat him.

Taking a closer look at the map you figure if you want to go to the library (B) you need to head SW. Straight to the west you can see one of the "Remnants", the residential one (A), that looks to be a walled off area of buildings. The SW path has a bit more recent traffic you presume that the expedition does send their researchers there occasionally. But if you want to stick to the trails and reach the other remnants you should head west past the Residential.

However the presence of the nearby herds indicates that these groups are either fast enough to avoid the beasts or large enough to discourage them. Herbivores have been known to be dangerous if not handled properly. As you watch the dinosaurs you are comforted that most you see seem to be grazing though you do note that the fliers look to be fishing in the river. The question is, if these are are herbivores, where are the carnivores that prey on them?

Where are you going?
Mar 27, 2024 6:05 am
Arc feels happy to be able to travel again, even better, travelling with the group... not alone like last time. And he somewhat preferes to walk to the residencial remnant, and from there decide were to go next... probably point C?

When I arrived in this land, by one of those bizarre storms, I landed close to these animals Blornvig. Magnificent and dangerous Skeeve. Now recalling some of his research about animals in the Tower, he feels confident in sharing more information. They are called dinasours, they come both in herbivorous and carnivorous species. You can all differenciate these two groups by looking at the head and teeth, and to their legs. Most carnivorous have huge mouthes with sharp teeth, and walk in two legs. Most herbivorous have flat teeth, walk in four legs and some have sort of body protection like horns and frills for defense. Most flying ones are carnivorous.

Now recalling his own previous experience, he takes out his bow and makes sure his quiver is at hand...

The herbivorous won't mind us as long are we keep some distance. If we move closer Kaarik, they may consider us hunters and will take defensive measures... If we ever really need to bother them, I'll try to speak to them first, but if it is not needed, it is best to stay away.
As for the carnivorous...The small or medium-sized carnivorous usually hunt in groups, they could jump from these tall grass at us if they think they have an easy prey. If some do, they will try to divide our group to focus on the smallest divided party. It is wise walk together with weapons ready, and if we leave the trail do not to make too much noise.
On my way here I was attacked by a group of four hunters, luckily I survived! Now we have strength in being a big group.

Arc looks at the sky to see if there are any flying dinasours around, beside the fishing ones by the river.

Hunters hide in the tall grass but can be seen from the sky. If it makes you feel safer, I could do a small flight around our area to see from above if we are walking into a group of hunters or if we are followed.

Only if there are no flying dinasours close to them, Arc jumps high and does a quick aerial reconnaisance between their location and the residencial remnant. He remembers how high his attackers could get and flies just a bit higher. But if bigger flyers seem to notice him, Arc will immediatly go back to the group.

Just a side note about how I view Beast Speaker
I view them as extreemly simpe NPC with limited IQ and emotins as well as heightened instincts. Talking to them dos not automatically mean they are friendly, as you may have noticed already. Like with people, beast take time or the right conditions, or a good roll, to convince. It may not be a bad idea to approach beast to et them used to you before actualy needing something from thm.
A couple of the largere fliers circle the area but most stay over the river. Based on ARc's experience he estimates that some of the fliers have larger wings than he does though most are his size or smaller The most common fliers have total wingspans about a wide aas one or Arc's wings (5-6')

Judging a short flight of limite altitude to be safe enough Arc launches up into the sky before circling abouve the others for a short moment. Scanning the grassy area Arc confirms that the open areas are dominated by the larger dinosaurs but there are smaller ones near the tree cover and river. Some of these definitely have the look and behavior of hunters. Fortunatley you have yet to catch the attention of any predators.

Ignoring the dinos for a moment, I just want to make sure of something.
A is a residential for us remnant that has been explored, at least some.
B is the library remnant.
C and D are remnants that are known, but as of yet unexplored.
What is E?

Then we can head sound to the other unexplored Remnant, and then hit the Library on the way back. If we are really lucky, one or all of them will have a Matrix Node."

Sorry Psybermagi, I didn't fully get It. Arc checked the area around the trail between our position and point A (Residential) and then the area behind us. I understand that, while there are some hunters near the river and trees, none of those groups are near the road we need to take to go to A, so it will be safe to walk. Am I right?
OOC:
Yes, I am getting better at understanding how beast speak works. Since we won't be staying too long in this Γ‘rea, Arc doesnt think he will have the time to befriend any of these dinasours properly. Thats why he suggested not to get too close to any of them.
I agree with Skeeve and Blornvid, Let's do a tour A, C, D and B. We can leave that Castle (E) for later. And after B, some of us can visit the druid.

Making your way west across the grassy countryside with ocasional clusters of trees, low hills, and crumbled remains of structures long fallen to ruin. The trail has obviously been used by carts, wagons, and much foot traffic from the base. Likely the researchers come this way with some of the guards when exploring the ruins and remnants. The dinosaur herds prove to react much as other beasts would. The herds of larger beasts barely reacting at all with those of maller size shifting nervously if you get too close.

You soon loose sight of the swamp behind the hills and trees as you follow the trail. However the walls of your first remnant grow bigger as you near them. The walls are about 30' tall and there are 2 sets of wide doors closed on the western side of the square. The walls are of simple solid stone and the doors are heavy timbrs bound with metal and are in good condition. As you get closer you see a faint shimmer in teh air over the walls much like heat waves in the dessert.
Mar 28, 2024 3:02 pm
"I guess we probably should have asked for any extra information on the two known Remnants. Kinda missed opportunity, there ...

"Well, if the walls and doors are in good condition, let's see if there are any current occupants."
Mar 28, 2024 3:32 pm
What's that shimmering? You see that? Ealdwig tries to get a better angle. Doesn't seem natural. Think it's magical in nature? Maybe a ward?
Mar 28, 2024 3:34 pm
You know from overheard conversations at the cantina and tavern that no one from the expedition stays out at the Remnants overnight. Typically they will make a day of it with several researchers and guards around with a squad of scouts that patrol the area. This really in the morning you are here before any other teams but may see some later in the day.

The Remnants are said to be odd as they only show normal wear and tear for being abandoned. The rest of the city however was thoroughly destroyed and aggressively overtake by plants and animals giving the service of having been destroyed centuries ago. No one knows why but the Remnants were protected and seen cut off summit from informed going into or out of them.
Mar 28, 2024 3:38 pm
The doors open easily enough and the latch seems to have been repaired recently. Swinging the doors in you see crumbling building and paved streets. Though a few small plants struggle to grow in the area, mostly in what looks to be planned gardens or planter boxes, there are no sounds and it feels oddly empty on the far side of the doorway.
Mar 28, 2024 5:45 pm
"Should we go through the Remnant, or should we go around? I'm good for going through."
Mar 28, 2024 6:16 pm
Vaun followed the party and was fascinated to see the large herbivore dinosaurs. In the beginning of his journey he and his friend was attacked by some of this carnivorous hunters. He could remember it as Arc mentioned about them. The scenic beauty was so exhilarating that Vaun continued to sketch dinosaurs at different poses, going about eating trees and grazing around. If he could find a dead one, he would love to dissect it and find more about their reptilian anatomy. Ofcourse he would need lots of people working alongside him in skinning and separating the organs of these huge beasts. As the party planned to make a circuit in the Westward area, Vaun followed on trying to make some landmark sketch of the regions. Hopefully, they could update the map back in the expedition base.

When the party stopped in front of the Remnant he expressed his desire to explore it. Afterall, they were all competent adventures, and with two healers in the party, what could go wrong?

You tentatively step across the boundary and into the remnant. As you do you all suffer waves of vertigo and a mild headache. Roll a save test

Those who have crossed a border or been subject to a Border Storm recognize the feeling and push through. Physically the barrier poses no limit to any of you but many who cross a Border, especially for the first time, find them very uncomfortable. Players can determine themselves if it their character has encountered a border before as long as their background or history would have included extensive travel

As you regain your senses and stabilize yourselves you look around. The interior of the remnant is much as you saw from outside but you fell something is subtlety wrong but you can't put your finger on what.

The streets are wide but you can tell the area is not laid out for large amounts of traffic as they turn or split often. Along the sides of the road are round patches of dirt with dead plants, trees, and a smattering of weeds and small scrub brush. The buildings are mostly single story structures with shallow roofs. A few look to have had second stories in the past but the upper levels are crumbling much more severely. Doors and window covers are tattered and falling off or gone completely.

Glancing inside one of the building you see it is mostly clear with a smattering of cracked bricks, dust, and others signs of neglect though it looks as if some areas have been cleared of rubble. Though lacking furniture the building bring to mind a residential neighborhood. Some of the scattered ruble looks to have ben shifted or piled together to clear out other areas..
Mar 28, 2024 11:58 pm
The movement of the debris makes sense if it is being frequently visited by researchers from the Base.

Skeeve is very familiar with Borders, having had to negotiate one in his introductory adventure. And that wasn't even his first time from his pre-game travels. Doesn't help with the Save, but he knows what to expect.

He also checks to see what other subtle changes happened, especially things like time of day, season, or apparent age of the buildings. It looks like it wasn't an issue on the buildings.

Blornvid, Kaaric, Barley, and Vaun all recover after just a moment but the rest have a vague feeling of pressure and disorientation. Those who have been through Borders before feel a growing sense of "strength and resistance" to the effects of the border. Arc recalls that those merchants who travel far and often have to cross Borders have said that after a while they are no longer bothered by them other than when they are actually transitioning. This has lead to bandits often using Borders as an ambush spot and taking advantage of the disorientation and animals chaotic reactions. A quick test reveals that the symptoms can be lessened but not removed by any of you healing abilities.

Moving on you wander deeper into the residential remnant. Signs of excavation and temporary habitation can be found scattered around. Signs of a small fire, likely for cooking mid day meals, a few stools and a table set up in one of the buildings with an intact roof, and miscellaneous pieces of small equipment like paper or scraps of rope. You get to the plaza and look around. Tracks indicate the entire area has been gone over, at least cursorily. One of the pavilions houses a dry cistern with a small fountain and the other to the north looks to have a well. to the south is a larger structure that is not in as bad of a state as the rest of the buildings in the area.

Arc'd appreciate to have a draft of an overview map of the place :) , as to imagine what he saw while flying, if it is not too much work of course.
He then listens to Skeeve and Blornvid, and nods.

Then he says, almost like talking to himself... I wonder how many times shall we need to cross these borders before getting used to it

Mar 30, 2024 12:22 am
Arc nods in understanding You are probable right, but I still hate de dizziness, the disorientation, lasting more than the crossing itself.
Arc's memory is vivid on not recovering fast, and his face shows how uncomfortable he still is.
I even needed some air to shake it all off... If 5 or 8 crossings allows for such learning, I'm tempted to do them all now, even if It takes a couple hours, just to be free from such feelings in the future. Do you guys think this can be trained?

No save needed at this time as it has no impact but I may ask for ST at other border crossings

You make you way west, avoiding the small and large herds as both the size and number in each herd varies, and soon get to a point where you can see the next Remnant better. From the outside it looks much the same as the other save the shimmering distortion over this one is much stronger. Then you spot a group of people, as this distance you can not tell what type, approach and enter from the north. Getting closer you spot a small group of goblins at each of the eastern doors that look to be lounging around in the time honoured traditions of guards doing as little as possible. One of the goblins points in your direction and the other quickly form up and stare at you.

As you get near the goblins they talk with each other before one pulls out a scroll and looks it's over. He then sends one of the other goblins inside before calling out as you get near.

The goblins look at you as you stand glancing back and forth somewhat awkwardly.
You are now about 30 away from them
Apr 1, 2024 7:57 pm
We stop walking towards them. I don't want to get any closer than 30 feet in case things go bad ...

Skeeve says, "Hello! We are travelers who were coming to look at this place. Do you allow visitors into the area, or is this goblin only?"
OOC:
I was going to be more aggressive, but we have one more Remnant to check out and Skeeve doesn't feel like killing a bunch of goblins today. He's adventured with some goblins thus far, and is just not that into killing goblins anymore. (However, if they attack, then the restraint quickly disappears.)

They look at each other then the one with the scroll checks it again. Well technically it's open, but only by invitation. I didn't see your description on the list. Do you have an invitation?

A couple more goblin guards join these, bringing their Numbers to 8. You notice that the one in back is holding a rope that goes inside the remnant through the doorway and rippling barrier.
Apr 1, 2024 8:22 pm
Arc stands by Skeeve, looking at the goblin that answered. He ido wondering if they were truly willing to ley them pass or just buying some time to increase their numbers before attacking.

For the record, Skeeve is not trying to outsmart them. His ideal solution is to get to move to the southern trail by going through the remnant so they can see how strong of a force of goblins is here. He has no intention to fight them or deceive them. Just scout them. But, if they give flack, we'll just go around.
"We do not have an invitation. ... Can we request an invitation? What would make it worth your while?"

The goblins confer for a while in hushed voices. You get the impression there are 2 low ranking leaders. When they are done the one talking originally turns to look at you. 100 gold can get you a invitation with a bit of advice. 50 gold gets you an invitation that you go use at another door. Guaranteed legit. But we only let you though here for the full 100.
Apr 1, 2024 10:16 pm
As you talk you see another group leaving from the northern gate. They appear to be hobgoblins heading north to the river.
Apr 2, 2024 12:07 am
Blornvid watches the hobgoblins depart. Upon hearing the goblins' asking price, he snorts out a laugh. Only loud enough for his friends to hear, he says, "I could see 100 silver pieces..."
Apr 2, 2024 12:57 am
Skeeve replies to the goblins, "OK, let me see what we want to do."

He takes a step back and says quietly to the group, "Are we willing to spend 100gp to walk into a potential trap, or do we just wanna go check out the other one? There would appear to be a LOT of goblins here running the place. If they can have 8 at this gate, they probably have 8 at every gate. Plus what they have inside. We have no guarantee that the 'invite' will actually be legitimate when we get inside. On the other hand, the chance for intel on other factions is absolutely tremendous. If there is really a diverse clientele running through here, we could have the chance to learn a tremendous amount."

He will then tell Blornvind and Ealdwig to remove and hide their Manor pins if they still have them on. He will do the same.
OOC:
The next location Skeeve is referring to is the Remnant to the south of this one. He had no intention to go exploring an Orc controlled castle, or Remnants that are controlled by hobgoblins. Neither seems like a good plan to him.

Skeeve says, "From what I have picked up, the various goblin tribes are all pretty much independent. (Including from other goblin tribes.) So they aren't part of the hobgoblins or the orcs. In fact, they broke free of the hobgoblins. My guess is that this is a fairly independent group that is trying to use their control of this Remnant to get money from interested people from any side.

"That said, no, I don't trust them. I am more than willing to go around, too."
OOC:
To be clear, Skeeve hid his pin when he recommended it to the other two.
Apr 2, 2024 4:35 am
There is a rough track around the town, possibly from patrols or others like you who wish to continue on the paths to other Remnants without entering this one. You can tell from the traffic already seen that this Remnant is unusually active by multiple factions that you know are hostile with each other.

The goblins and arrived first, quickly followed by the hobgoblins who were working with the goblins at the time. The Kobolds arrived around the same time as the goblins and have been in conflicts with them and to hobgoblins since. The hobgoblins soon began focusing their efforts around the Remnants and Tower Orbs and the goblins were dispatches on menial tasks and scouting. Shortly thereafter the goblins broke off from the hobgoblin control and fractured into multiple tribes. Some goblins left, others arrived. Then the orcs arrived and took control of the castle. Recently there have also been sightings of larger creatures moving with the small reptilian kobolds but no one has gotten close enough to identify them yet.

Arc laughs
I don't trust them, I agree we shouldn't pay them. Now, if we really want to get some Intel, they may be willing to let us pass in exchange for some kind of 'work' done inside. But again:I don't trust them.

Skeeve is surprised by both the hobgoblins and the kobolds.

"I may be wrong. If they are hosting both hobgoblins and kobolds, then this is not likely an overt trap. The goblins were slaves of the hobgoblins, but broke free. The kobolds fight everyone. Yet, they are all mixing here without bloodshed. This could be an 'open city', so to speak. It may very well be worth the cost to get into this Remnant. The only way to find out what we are missing is to get inside.

"Or we can move on."
Apr 2, 2024 3:22 pm
Skeptically true, but for 100 gold? That's robbery! Ealdwig scratches his head, and smiles so, how do we get an "invite"?
Apr 2, 2024 4:40 pm
"Ealdwig's right. It is robbery. Unless one of you can turn invisible, I don't see a way of getting inside without either getting robbed or fighting, neither of which I'm inclined to do."

You move onto the path around the Remnant by at a leasurly pace so the kobold arrive and pass through the ES gate before you reach it. From that point you can tell it continues around the Remnant wall and there is a path from that side as well. You see a group in the distance heading south on the path.

Well gentlemen I an sorry but at this time we are not open for tourists or casual visitors. You are required to have an invitation. As you are not allied with any of the existing factions that have been extended an invitation and do not have a personal invitation I am sorry but I will have to refuse you entry.

The smug look on his face shows only all to clearly the joy the little tyrant has over wasting you time for his own amusement. The 12 other goblins all look on with keen interest and several have wicked sneers as they look over your party. You notice that these goblins have a different appearance than those you just talked with at the E-N gate. Slight variations in skin coloration, ear and nose size and shape, all lead you to believe that these are likely from another goblin tribe. The spokesman talks with one of his henchgoblins who quickly ducks through the partially open gate and into the Remnanat.

If you have no official business I will have to ask you to move on. I have blacklisted you and all other gates will be on the lookout for you. Do not expect any better a reception at the other gates he chuckles as the stares down his nose up at you.

I will return to the Baase and visit the shaman and perhaps the library to study for a time. I wish you well. Forgive my change of plans but must follow my own path, that of the healer. Your path seem to be pitting you against the others of the area. Farewell, safe travels. With that he makes his way quickly back towards the Remnant you left earlier, in the hopes of encountering the researchers and guards.

As you round the corner you notice that the southern gates are closed and have no guards outside. The walls are tall but not made of smooth stone so should not be too hard to scale. And though you can see the walls have a parapet atop them you see no guards atop them. Why?

You soon reach the path leading from the SE gate that heads further south. This path shows a higher level of foot traffic than the ones you have seen today. The path continues to the south though the grass and leads into a thick cluster of trees with glimpses of another Remnant to the SW of your current position.

OOC:
Scale the wall just using the rough surface? Phft. We have someone who can fly, someone who can shoot a rope, someone with a slithering rope, and someone with telekinesis. We can get to the top of the wall in style!
Apr 5, 2024 8:59 am
To Vaun Farewell friend, may he meet soon!

To Skeeve You don't even have to ask!
Arc has already jumped high while talking. He is careful not to cross the border nor to get too far away from the wall (not to bring attention from anyone inside nor animals around).
When up to the paraphet altitudes, he checks for people, devices or border. He also checks for dinosaurs around the grassy area around the team (just to be sure there are no risks while climbing).
- If no enemy is around, he ties his rope in the paraphet for the rest to climb. And stand over the paraphet guarding his friend climb.
- If there are enemies around, he will back down and tell his friends who and where.

Ealdwig says to Skeeve, you thinking of going up there? I was looking to see if I could climb it. Figured it wasn't worth the risk for myself. Then he remembers the fancy rope device that was given to him a little while back and smacks his head. He pulls it out. We could use this to climb it. It would definitely help Blronvid. Smiling as always.
Apr 5, 2024 2:38 pm
As Arc gains altitude he sees no one atop the wall. The wall does have a walkway down it's middle and slightly raised and covered structures at the corners, but no one is anywhere on the wall. Scanning the immediate area around the team shows no hidden threats as the dinosaurs look to Give the buildings and the southern path a wide space.

Getting a bit higher and closer, careful of the border which is noticeable but not clearly so when looked at from above, Arc scans the interior. The first thing he notices is that the interior of the Remnant looks to shift and change as if shadows from clouds drift across it. As the "shadows" cross over the interior the building shift from looking grand and new to nearly complexly ruined. Equally surprising is the fact he can not see any creatures inside despite seeing the guards from above. Your flight seems to have caught the attention of some of the goblin guards who taunt and encourage you to "Just fly in" with shouts and gestures.

Borders: Created by or during the Shattering divide the lands like crack on a sheet of thick ice. These are theorized to be cracks in the Mortal realm where extraplanar influences leak into the mortal world. At the beginning they were much easier to detect but also much more dangerous. Many who entered never came back. Over the last 50 years since the Shattering they have been examined and appear to be sealing themselves and are not as easily noticed. Some are nearly indetectable and not noticed until crossed while other are clearly marked by sudden transitions in terrain or weather.

Crossing Borders subjects you to the forces of the other Realms but allows passage to other lands, but not always the same destination. You can leave form A , arrive at B, then recrossed and arrive at C. Many of these changes in destination seemed fixed and predictable and often formed a cycle. Scholars equate this to the lands now acting like pieces of wood floating in the sea of the planes. The Mortal Realm did not fully shatter so that the pieces still bump into each other but and they float the pieces touching shift positions.

This fact was exploited by travelers and merchants who had access to magical aid to cross safely and reliably. Fortunately the Borders have calmed greatly so magic is not needed to cross them safely. However it is still used to ensure arrival and departure points are fixed. Crossing a "Wild Border" is considered foolish and risky. The effects of the recent Border Storms are examples of what might happen if you cross a Border at an unregulated point.
Apr 5, 2024 5:05 pm
Arc backs down to speak with the rest, and tells his findings.
He remembered the first time he crossed a Border, allowing him to travel a huge distance in no time. But It could have also allowed him to travel in time without him realizing.

I Think I have an idea for the rope we saw the goblins used. Maybe there is a space-time blur, some kind of shifting thing, so people may enter without knowing where or when they may get to... the same dificulty to return. So having a rope would allow them to return to their entry space-time.
Then a stranged look appeared in his face, as he realized that this idea spoken made even less sense than in his head before he spoke.
Last edited April 5, 2024 5:08 pm
Apr 5, 2024 5:48 pm
Skeeve hears his explanation and says, "That's brilliant! As long as nothing in the middle would break the rope somehow, that is a very, very clever means of making sure you can get back.

"That implies to me that this part of the Remnant is highly variable and their rope trick doesn't work. If you were to have flown over to those goblins waving at you, you wouldn't have made it to them. They were trying to get you lost or killed.

"Question: Is the wall inside the Border or outside the Border? If the wall is outside the Border, we can still climb it and at least take a look around. If the wall is inside the Border, going onto the wall has a lot of risk, rope trick or not."

Yeah, I'm with you. I can't grasp the concept. The city I lived in didn't have boarders or whatever they are.

Ealdwig tries to grasp the concept. Scratching his head, didn't we just walk through two of these boarder things? I didn't like it but other than feeling a little ill, nothing else happened. This one is different? You think we'll get sent somewhere we don't want to go?

Thinking about it some more, if we went one at a time would we still get to the same place or will we all be separated?

What is the point of them? Why would you want to risk it?
Apr 5, 2024 7:39 pm
Kaarik does not seem very convince by the idea.
I am not sure that this is less dangerous that entering a remnant full of goblin. We could be directly in danger after crossing and then not able to cross once again anymore.

Are we even sure that the border would not move in the time we cross it and recross it once again?
Apr 5, 2024 8:55 pm
Exactly! That's what I meant!! Arc said to Skeeve.
And I do think we would get separated Arkmenos.
Now, I understand that the border is within the walls, but It is very instable.
So much unstable that nobody can truly conquer and use this remnant as a fort to take all the area we are in. Not in the common strategic sense.
Also, if we had paid them, I think they may have let us go in without rope, so we would be lost.

When listening to Kaarik... You have a good point there, danger not only traveling but also on the other side. Although I do prefer having my chances against some goblins than get thown to the south pole alone without a way to get back.

Arc remembered how those goblins spotted him, and what they shouted. He thought he was been careful enough not to be spotted, but their shouts clearify their intentions. Arc is almost always for peace, but this combination of evil intensions with lack of respect is very hard to deal with for Arc. And with this thought he became strongly aware of his bow in the right shoulder.

I'm curious about what they are actually doing there, but not THAT curious to risk being lost in borders.

Though you are not well versed in the mechanics of the Borders you do know that the expedition members have been using the Library and residential remanent without concern for several weeks now. Entrance and exit by the gates seems to be standard and other than the nausea there are no difficulties. As the goblins are also focusing on the gates it seems reasonable that the gates are fixed crossing points but over the wall . . . . That seems much more perilous to cross though not impossible.

Borders are almost equally detectable to all senses. Most people notice the visual distortions first but there is also a faint audible hum, and strange scents detectable at range. There is also a tingling sensation and task of sour electricity as you cross the border. Border thickness vary from a single foot to yards or possibly longer. Telepaths and those sensitive to magic can also detect Borders but no better than others with more common senses. The Borders at the Remnant gates are very quick, about 1/2 to 1 foot wide. Arc is unsure where the border is atop the walls but it may be possible to climb them though the view would essentially be the same as what he has already observed.

After quick farewells Barley hours to catch up with Vaun and the rest of you turn south.

The trail enters thick trees and your visibility drops from hundreds of feet to dozens of less. Making your way through the thick trees. The path runs it's way through them and you come to the far side of the trees to see another walled Remnant. Again they're are two sets of gates to a side. Both the mother's gates are slightly open and the haze of the Border can be seen over the walls.

There are no guards. The discomfort from crossing Boarders will decrease with each crossing. Usually...

With no guards, Skeeve is ready to charge on in, once the initial surveillance is done. Then we can search again once we're inside.

You are closest to the NE gates and other than noting that there are many tracks in and our of the Remnant see no signs of the other factions. Moving to the gate and string through you quickly recovery after only a brief moment.

There are no enemies nearby but you hear sounds of battle to the south. The buildings around you are in various states of ruin. Unlike the residential remnant this has rubble and trash stem everywhere. Signs of recent occupation, fire pits, discarded food, and other refuse mix ancient with recent.

Sorry for the delay, RL has it's challenges lately, but I'm stil here!
Arc jumps high again and files around. And he enjoys It!

It is becoming somehow usual for recon flights to start with a fast overlock at the sky for aerial threats, then do a small cicle at low altitudes looking for enemies hiden around the team (specially if there is rubble or tall grass), then a second cicle a few meters higher for further threats.
Always bow at hand, and ready to engage in battle if attacked.

Only afterwards he flies south following the sounds of Battle. Arc won't participate in that battle unless it is clear that one side is from the base or other ravenfolk (in which case he will help them).
OOC:
Is there a Ranger Trait he gets for all this practice? :)

The Barrier is easier to notice from the inside and you notice no flyers as you glance up and out. As soon as you rise over the crumbled second stories to scan the area to the south Arc spots guards on walls that partition a large section firing on a squad in surrounding buildings.

At this distance Arc can not fully identify the two sides. One of the guards atop the compound turns to fire a wild shot at Arc letting him know approaching would have an increased risk. Dropping back down after a scan of the area he relays to the others what he saw. The compound is well guarded and the surrounding forces are mostly harassing them with probing attacks.
OOC:
still traveling, map coming tonight
Apr 11, 2024 10:16 am
Arc shares all information with his Friends, then flies again to the south to approach closer, he wants to identify the sides fighting.

To avoid much risk, and without hunters above, he wil fly much higher thank usual so that the ones fighting couldn't shoot at him (and if they do, they would at a huge penalty on strengh required to get so high and with the wind affecting their aim). He won't get in shooting range since he doesn't want to fight, his bow at his back (not at ready), he just wants to identify the sides.

Arc launches into the air and gets as close to the Barrier as possible but is still only able to get a bit over 50 feet over the ground from where you launch though it seems to go higher towards the middle. The Border follows the walls and then forms a low dome over the interior of the Remnant such that Arc is unable to soar to great heights to avoid all attacks. Fortunately it is high enough to avoid most missiles.

Arc flaps towards the compound and sees several groups on the way. He spots a group of kobolds and lizardmen and another of orcs. Both are harassing groups of armored figures. This is where the sounds of battle are coming from. The compound to the south is guarded by more of the armored figures and some in robes. However he can not determine who is within the armor and is shot at a couple of times, both by heavy bows and magics as well.

Arc is hit by a lucky arrow, 1 damage, and his high arial maneuvers obviously got the attention of everyone below and he is certain that his flight is tracked ans he flies back out of range of the archers.

There are many armored figures, in squads of 8 to 20. The other forces looked to be in squads of 6 to 12.
Arc is quickly healed.
Apr 11, 2024 6:25 pm
"Well, we need to start moving in order to stay away from large groups. If we meet smaller squads, we'll have to handle them very quickly. I think we should start checking out buildings, too.

"Arc, you'll have to help guide us here."
Apr 11, 2024 7:48 pm
I think we ought to at least understand which forces are currently fighting, we owe that to the lady of the manor.

I might have become mad, but what do you think about not avoiding a smaller group of goblins and making sure that we keep them alive?
Apr 11, 2024 8:45 pm
Blornvid's head turns sharply towards Kaarik. "I've met one good goblin and fought many nasty ones. While I won't attack them outright, because of that one good lad, I'm not inclined to automatically help them either. And Arc didn't say anything about goblins being here. Kobolds, orcs, lizardmen, and some unidentified armored folk.

"Honestly, why are we bothering to get involved in this battle? We don't have a stake in it, and we're not honor-bound to defend any of the lot. I thought that this was just a recon mission. Shouldn't we move on?"
Apr 11, 2024 9:00 pm
As son as Arc gets this information, he starts gliding in zig zag to move away from the remnants, but he is hit!
With arrows flying closer than he wanted in his way back, he knows he is getting way too much attention!! And the arrow in his leg hurts.

He starts flying irregularly, both getting out of reach and acting as if he was badly hurt. Hopefully those fighting in the remnant will not consider him a threat and focus on their own battle. Arc truly expects them to forget him soon...

Anyhow, he does NOT fly straight back to his friends. He would appear to fly irregularly to the east, but once out of sight, and low enough (say a couple of meters at most), he flies back to his Friends.

Sorry mates, I have no clue what drove me, but It is done. So... I got two important findings to share: the Battle there is awful, and my leg hurts badly.

Then he shares all the details he gathered, while resting sitting in the ground.

Thanks Eardwig, you are great. ... for his help with the wound. Then draws a map in the ground of what he saw from the sky for all to picture a way out and he marks where the enemies are. Skeeve, please do use this map to guide, I am not in my best shape to do that now. Let's just go slowly and out of reach of those fighters.

Skeeve says, "Blornvid raises a good point. We came to carry out recon. We've done that. We can leave now having accomplished our primary goal.

"If we stay, this will be extremely dangerous. There are a lot of creatures here, and there are only five of us. That means even the smallest groups outnumber us. I have one area of effect talisman I can use on one group. After that it's normal hack-n-slash, which can easily spiral out of control. Also, we're by the door here. If we go further, our ability to escape becomes more difficult.

"Also, we have no guarantees that anyone will be friendly to us. I assume the kobolds, lizard men, and orcs will just attack us. The armored group is a complete unknown, and they are apparently holding their own. That means they are extremely tough. On the other hand, that means they believe what they are trying to hold is very valuable. The attackers also seem to believe that, as they are not letting up.

"So, do we investigate or go?"
Apr 12, 2024 12:02 am
I don't know. Seems awfully risky. Although I am not opposed to sneaking around. There could be something of value around here.

Did we really get a good recon in? We know there are many different factions and they are fighting each other. That's all we really know. Is that enough?
Apr 12, 2024 12:05 am
"It's more than we knew coming into this place. Do any of the Base leaders know even this much?"
Apr 12, 2024 12:18 am
"Yes, knowing that there are multiple factions fighting for control is very useful info. The Expedition didnt know anything about these Remnants. Now they will know both are occupied and under enemy control. Assuming we live long enough to get the message back."
OOC:
@MoyenBateau, to be clear, Lady Sylfir of the Manor doesn't care about any of this. The reason is said that back with the goblins is because I figured identifying with the Expedition could get us killed. Using the Lady of the Manor would let me pass a 'lie detector' spell, but also hopefully not trigger them.

Skeeve would like to get a better view of the armored people, if possible. He wants to see if they are uniform, vary, have heraldry, anything to identify who they are. But, he doesn't want to fight through kobolds, lizard men, and orcs to get that view. Are they someplace we can observe from a wall?
Apr 12, 2024 1:34 am
[ +- ] map
You can try and sneak closer but you are certain that Arcs reconnaissance allerted the other factions to a new player to the scene and they know the terrain while you have only the limited recollections of Arc. The buildings do have doors and other than guards on top of the interior wall of the compound Arc saw no one above ground level. You can try sneaking through building and/or the ruins (grey lines are crumbled walls/buildings), scaling a wall to scout from above, or circling outside to come in through another gate on the east or west sides as they may be closer to the compound..
Apr 12, 2024 2:36 am

I can try scaling a wall somewhere. Checking things out. Probably not as obvious as someone flying around.

Between Kaarik's slithering rope, Ealdwig's rope crossbow, and Skeeve's magic, we should be able to get up the outside wall in quick order. That should allow us to circle around to scout things out, yet also give us a quick exit if we need it.
Apr 12, 2024 12:58 pm
If we are doing more recon, It should be on foot. They may think I flew back, and I don't really want to become a target again.

The border atop the wall is not a clear and easily discerned and straight line. You could sit or stand at the edge of the Remnant exterior wall but walking would require extreme care to not touch the border.
Apr 12, 2024 4:34 pm
Yeah, we're not walking around up there? Ealdwig points to the outside wall where the barrier is. That's crazy Skeeve. We might hit the barrier and fall.

I thought scaling one of the interior walls, getting some height and cover to check things out.

But, I'm all for Blornvid's suggestion to leave this place.

As the sounds of the fey music fades and you look at the Remnant, which looks much as the others, you not that Skeeve and Blornvid continue to shuffle and tap. As hard as they try they can not sit still. I'm have the more the try to be still and quiet the worse the effects become. Attempts at silence results in then humming, whistling, and unfolding outbursts of if song. Inactivity results in tapping, thumping, and twirling.

Skeeve is familiar with fey antics and knows the spell will likely fade by sunset. Hopefully... Till then the best way to handle it is to just go with it as best they can.
Apr 18, 2024 7:57 pm
Looking at Skeeve and Blornvid being more happy than usual, Kaarik proposes to rest until they feel better.

To Arc, he asks: "How did you know what would happen when you started dancing? It was amazing!"
Apr 18, 2024 9:33 pm
Yeah, that was great. How did you know?
Apr 19, 2024 12:51 am
Arc sees his two friends still dancing and sits by a rock, and claps gently with their beat. But from time to time he slows the beat a bit... this is kind if a magic on its own, hopefully the actual fey magic's rythm will follow suit to a slow enough one to free his friends sooner.

While doing that, he listens Kaarik and Ealdwig and laughs: I didn't !!

Only after calming down his laughs he explains: You know feys are famous for having fun, right? Also for having strong magic and, at least a lot of them, being as smart as bright and nature-friendly children. Also, they mostly have good hearts, good intentions, but such strong magic can go badly if just left to chance. So I figured it would be better that we all have fun together rather than them having fun on us... And, you know, almost all children enjoy dancing.

Hahaha, I didn't actually know how would it resolved, I was surprised that they joined my dance so fast and that they helped us travel to safety. They even protected us from dinos in our way here, did you see that? It resulted so well! Just for this, I like them even more than before, now we have new friends here. Did you liked it all?.

Then he slowed a bit more his clapping.

Arc listens to Ealdwig and if his idea of slowering the rythm to halt the dancing doesn't work he smiles at the bushes around, and with a somewhat louder voice... Dear friends, would you allow my two dancing friends here some rest please? It would seem to me we all need some rest now.

You look and listen but not a single hint of fey can be found. Though some fey are cruel and twisted while others are kind and benevolent most simply are. What they are is true to their nature. As most fey live heavily in the now you recent interactions have likely slipped from their thoughts once they left you. The fey you danced with seemed to enjoy their time with you so it is unlikely Bornvid and Skeeve were affected with malicious intent. However they fey think differently so the results may not mean the same to you as they do to the fey. Which is why there are so many cautionary tales about dealing with Fey.
OOC:
The effects are not going to stop any time soon and do not prevent you from continuing. If you want to find the fey you will have to go looking.

"🎡 It's fine, we'll deal with it. 🎢 Maybe crossing the border into the Remnant will break it. 🎡 If not, it'll pass in time. 🎢"

Arc smiles black a Sleeve, nothing he can really do now about them.

Since the team will be a while in front of the library, Arc spreads his wings and jumps up high for his usual area recon. He doesn't want to be surprised again.

He is specially interesed in dino groups and their position, and in big flyers.

Blornvid is a bit short of breath while doing his jig. "I... suppose... it's... better... than... being... set on... fire."

OOC:
Is It getting late already? If so, Arc would want to get inside the library with everyone else before right falls.
You are absolutely right, it is not fun to play with fire.

Having set out early you still have half a day to explore. As with the other remnants this one is walled though there are no gates closed to bar the way. Looking in you see a large structure that, though the barrier distorts what you see, looks to be in good condition.

I hand both of our famous dancers a waterskin so they can take a drink.

Arc, see anything interesting up there?

Arc reports back to the team: no risks nor anything remarkable. All is clear.

So, we have Blornvid and Sleeve on a dancing spell. We have already scouted some remnants. We still got some time before walking black to base. Do you want to enter the library again? Or shall we continue west to the warehouse?

"🎡 Let's check the library.🎢"

"I don't... care. I just... want to... stop dancing."

"I am always happy to visit a library!"

Citizens of Paphos
Myreana (Archeologists)

While I personally do not see the need for hast Phlan has asked me to assist you with your intent to restore some of the civic functions within Phaphos. Looking over the reports generated by the clerk, first hand accounts are much preferred. I recommend talking with either Dean, the apparently sapient golem in the swamp, or Commander Ferran Martinel, who controls the undead guards on the isle

Recovering a lost heritage
Lady Tanamere Alagondar

Thank you for listening to my request. I am from a family that fled Paphos during the Shattering. While we have continued to do well as merchants and scholars a family legacy was hidden in a secure vault in the family offices in the southern building of the merchant area. I was sent by my family to retrieve our lost legacy and Phlan has told me that you are to be trusted and some of the most knowledgeable about the area.

When Paphos was sundered the faithful servant sent to fetch it never returned. The complex is just south of the Plaza and west of the Library. Bring Me my families legacy and you will be well rewarded. You may keep any other wealth you find, and you should find sufficient. I have maps of the city from family records but most of the city is in ruins. However I understand the merchant district survived. Here is a map of the area
