Chapter 2: Rotten Halls

Apr 2, 2024 4:19 pm
Dim light changes to the darkness as you move deeper into the dungeon
https://i.imgur.com/mDnd87B.jpeg
OOC:
To the west:
A rusted iron grate is set into the corridor floor. Through its bars, you see muddy water flowing slowly past.
Creepers and vines cling to the walls of this corridor, at the end of which is an arched crystal window, six feet wide and ten feet high. Through it, you can see a dark chamber.
OOC:
To the east:
A grand chamber opens ahead, plunging down into darkness below. A stone balcony provide decent protection against falling down occasionally.
OOC:
Devile face (middle):
The face is sculpted from stone and melds seamlessly with the surrounding wall. A detect magic reveals an aura of illusion magic over the face.

Apr 10, 2024 4:48 pm
OOC:
As one with passive perception of 19:
Zean after making sure that his spell provided the intended effect, releases the storm powers from his bidding. Looks carefully on now tidy floor and makes mindful steps towards the visible crossing.
"Watch out for this and that plate." - Zean shows others how to bypass the triggers for the trap and tosses it's used darts to mark them in case they will have to backtrack fast.
OOC:
I found some use for them in the end! ;) :D
Then he stops (certainly before entering the crossing) to not get too close to the stone devil face with dark mouth.

"In darkness, it hides. Don the mask or be seen." - he repeates the riddle out loud for him and his companions - "This mouth looks strange. Vatoris - you think there is something magical about it? Friends... do you see any masks here? The little... guy had some kind of mask on him walking next to this mouth... didn't it? I don't think it was coincidence..."
Apr 10, 2024 5:21 pm
Vatoris takes a better look at the Face. "Some sort of Illusion magic Around it. I don't trust it. This whole tomb so far has just been stupid tricks.."
Noticing the darkness encroaching around them he picks a few small rocks off of the ground. Pulling out a small vial he pours some liquid into his palm. Rubbing the liquid onto the rocks they begin to softly glow.

Walking over to the grate of water he drops one of the glowing rocks down the grate. He tosses another into the Devilish mouth.
The last he holds out for who ever wants it. "This will glow until I turn it off. Anyone want it?"

I cast light on the tip of my wand to illuminate the area.
OOC:
Cantrip, 1 hour duration
Apr 11, 2024 4:35 am
Ixion admired the demonic bas relief until he noticed what watched from within. Quietly, he told his team, "I see human-like eyes observing us from behind the devilish visage. Shall we introduce ourselves with word or sword?"
Apr 11, 2024 6:43 am
OOC:
Light is good. Even with darkvision you have disadvantage on perceptions checks if it is dark. Since it is a cantrip I'll assume you always have it on your wand unless you state otherwise
The rock dropped through the grate drops into the sluggish underground river and stay there illuminating it's muddy water that is flowing from South to North.
The other rock disappears into the blackness of the mouth (the magical darkness suspend the light of the object). You never hear it dropping on the floor.

Ixion evaluate that sculpted devil's mouth is wide enough for a Medium or smaller creature to crawl through and get into the the cavity behind the devil's mouth
OOC:
Let's say wall separating you from there is a two feet thick and it will take you 5 feet of movement to get through, but you end up prone on the other side, except for Tinkara.
The grate bars are spaced widely enough that a Small creature can squeeze through them (in case you are considering that)
Apr 11, 2024 7:15 am
OOC:
Is Zean medium size? :)
annex says:
Ixion admired the demonic bas relief until he noticed what watched from within. Quietly, he told his team, "I see human-like eyes observing us from behind the devilish visage. Shall we introduce ourselves with word or sword?"
"What!? Are they reacting to your words or our actions somehow? I would say... if... IF there is at least one force in this tomb that is not hostile towards us - I wouldn't want to miss the chance to make some relations with it... so let's try word first? Huh?" - Zean was visibly irritated that he can not see about what Ixion is talking about, but wasn't ready to use his Dispel Magic spell... just yet. So he shrugs his arms and thanks Vatoris for his shining stone, in the same time lighting his own "Eye of the Storm" - wooden sculpture, rod that he uses in such situation as his "magic torch":
https://i.imgur.com/Yn4dono.png
Naming it with such glorious name: he sees as some king of inside-joke, as it doesn't have any other special qualities other then looking interesting. But... in the same time... maybe there is some hidden quality in it? At least Zean makes sure, that is never obvious to his enemies...

With two sources of light Zean carefully walks towards the crystal window to their west - in order to check if there can be seen what is other side. He also checks how stron the window's crystal is and if it could be broken... just in case.
OOC:
Zean also has Light cantrip:D
Apr 12, 2024 6:09 am
OOC:
I've added yellowish auras of 20 and 40 feet to characters with light let me know if it is helpful (or if it makes picture harder to understand)
[ +- ] MAP
Zean light goes though the crystal window completely illuminating the room behind it. This vaulted tomb is overgrown with moss and creepers. A stone sarcophagus rests on a stepped dais in the middle of the floor. On the wall behind the sarcophagus, two large statues of bears grip a five-foot-diameter bronze disk embossed with a dozen glaring eyes.

Six desiccated corpses slump on thrones in niches along the walls. Each corpse wears a black mask made of papier-mâché and feathers. An arched crystal window to the east offers a view of the tunnel beyond.

The crystal window seems to be what it is a solid crystal window. It is hard to tell if it would break until you try to break it. But since Vatoris don't sense any magic around it you guess it could be possible to break
OOC:
I believe The crystal window is destructible, refer to rules clarification for details on breaking a destructible objects in 5e.
Apr 12, 2024 10:00 am
I could use Enlarge/Reduce on the window like I did on the door, but I'm not sure we want to yet. Any sign of mechanical traps or mechanisms?
Apr 12, 2024 5:30 pm
Throgin smiles and walks up to the Crystal window. He lifts his maul and says "Should I smash it?" with a big grin on his face staring at Zean
Apr 13, 2024 4:04 am
"They seem to just be watching, Zean, but let's not try breaking anything just yet, 'Fist. I want to try talking to whoever it is. Back me up... just not too close."

Ixion went to the demon face and peered in(to what was for everyone else the darkness).

"We mean you no harm. Are you safe in there? Do you need help?"

Silence is an answer to Ixion attempt. Now as he is peeking at the human, it's face seems to be spectral and it does not react to your words in any way.
Is it an illusion? Ixion probably wonder
Apr 13, 2024 10:23 am
I am content to hover and hold the light while the others investigate our surroundings.

"I think it's just an illusory visage back there... but why put an illusion behind otherwise impenetrable darkness? I don't trust this thing."
Apr 16, 2024 1:49 am
Our experience here leads me to believe we should trust nothing, and test everything.

I follow Vatoris towards the grand chamber.
Apr 16, 2024 3:23 am
"True. We'll have to check it out before we go much further, though. We shouldn't leave anything tricksy behind us," Ixion said as he stationed himself at the grand chamber's entrance, sword at the ready.
Apr 16, 2024 8:53 am
Getting back to his friends, Zean describes what he had seen int he sarcophagus' chamber and says:
"In darkness, it hides.
This line is probably about this face that Ixion is talking about. As is it only "darkness" that hides the face, you think we could throw a pebble in there, tto be sure it is illusion? With proper distance from it of course."
- he adds with a smile.
"'Don the mask or be seen.' - in that chamber there were skeletons with masks on their heads. And a metal board with many eyes on it... So probably we shouldn't go there without the mask... or... we should take the masks from those sleeping corpses and use it later... what you think about it?"

Then he notice that Ixion is already going further to the big chamber and while still waiting for other's comment about his thoughts - he haste his steps, going in Ixion direction: "Whatever happens here, I don't think we should separate."

FIX: marked as strike through wrong text in this post, sorry for mistake
Vatoris assisted by Tinkara bearing the light and followed by Ixion and Zean proceed east into the Grand Staircase
A grand chamber opens ahead, fifty feet across and plunging down into darkness below. A stone balcony winds around the walls to connect four archways. Other balcony levels are visible below, with corridors radiating off in all directions. To the north, a stone staircase descends to the lower levels.
OOC:
There are similar level with stone balcony around 25 feet lower and those with darkvision could notice one more level 50 feet below and the chamber is deeper than you can see. Well actually Ixion could see two more levels down where the floor is more than 100 feet away and he can see 4 statues on that floor, but let's focus on what it closer right now, would we?
As Vators glimpse down on the level below he see a hunched figure glares up at you from the balcony below, wearing a mask that is a replica of the devil face at the tomb entrance. Without saying a word, the figure steps out of sight (mowing west below you).
https://i.imgur.com/SLN2yhN.jpeg

Next moment you hear sound of braking crystal as Throgin breaks the window in no time.
Apr 16, 2024 5:49 pm
I will fly down to the the next level and look to see where the masked figure went.
Apr 16, 2024 7:05 pm
Hey guys...guys! Do we want to try grabbing one of these masks? Throgin looks back at the others and says Where did everybody go?
Apr 16, 2024 8:06 pm
Ixion relayed what his eldritch eyes observed, his marvelling at the eerie beauty of the evil place interrupted only by the masked figure's appearance and rapid disappearance.

"Not alone, Tink. Masks first, then we pursue together," Ixion suggested as he rushed back to Thunderfist.

"And we shouldn't go in here until it's checked out with arcane senses, Fist."
Apr 16, 2024 8:19 pm
I stop when Ixion objects, and follow him.
Apr 16, 2024 9:45 pm
Vatoris takes one of his glowly pebbles and tosses it down the balcony into the area below. He stands there for a bit, watching it fall.. "Let's see what Throgin discovered. Hopefully, he doesn't make a mess of everything."
Apr 16, 2024 11:43 pm

Both Eldritch Blasts hit the undead leaving black stains on the body, but undead (as you know) won't stop until eliminated, they don't feel pain.
All 6 corpses surrender Throgin as if moving in unison (unlike usual undead, they seem to be guided by single mind), one even get up on the sarcophagus, but his leg slips when he try to attack.
OOC:
OK only 4 of them attack this turn one took too long to move around you and had to dash and another fighting to keep his balance
Undead attack Throgin with their swords while trying to to bite him at the same time. While barbarian manage to avoid or reflect most of the attacks two light wounds left of the swords. The single bite of a rotten corpse is not strong, but Throgin feel necrotic energy impacting him.

To stand with Throgin side by side as they always do in dire situations.

Besides Zean have not the worst AC - I think and some damage resistance... so probably can go to the front lines. (?)
But this time instead of immediately drawing his Maul, he - while entering the chamber - takes is Eye of the Storm in both of his hands, rises it above his head and shouts with the force of thunder:
"In the name of Brightest of the all Lightnings... that is always hidden in the very center of the Greatest Storm... I COMMAND YOU... BOW before... and RUN from... the purest FORCE!" - what cause the item to flash with the blinding light for just a fraction of second, but seems to bestow some of the undead with a strange, "overexposed" state of their rotting flesh and body parts.
OOC:
Using CD: Turn Undead for 1 Action. Subtracting 1 CD.

Still reading through and understanding my spells, but for now I don't see a good one to use as bonus action, so I think that would be it for this turn! :)

Ixion skios behind Zean back and attack undead still blue from lighting, cutting it into peaces. Undead falls on the ground still.
The rest of them are obviously not impressed: three of them turn turn flee , but two in from of Throgin attack him. One is trying to swing his sword blindly, another keep attacking with both sword and trying to bite. Luckily bite miss , but Throgin fail to avoid each of the blades
OOC:

Due to rage Throgin takes halved damage: 3 and 4 accordingly

@annex I allow you to move your PC 5 feet more to ba able to attack of opportunity 1. @Pedrop Zean can attack of opportunity anyone, but only with an unarmed strike. @valdattaMadun Throgin could attack of opportunity with the maul (but no advantage, because Reckless Attack advantage is only on your turn).

Regardless please let me know IF each of you attack and which target to each of you choose: 1, 5 or 6. Because if you hit a turned undead it is no more turned and could continue fighting

I will finish enemy 1, 5 and 6 turn after hear from all 3 players

Currently very busy, will make a proper/full post at my evening - but for now Zean and I don't plan to use an opportunity attack. Because - as I understand it - attacking them and hitting will end their "turned status" ? So they will return to attack us? So I say: let's focus first on those that are not running away, finish them and then get the ones "sobbing in corner" ;)
Edit: oh... I just read that you have written exactly that - that they will get back attacking us... apparently sometimes my understanding of rules is not so bad...;)

I am hovering outside the entrance.
Apr 23, 2024 9:54 pm
oh yeah! Throgin would then grab a mask and try it on
Apr 23, 2024 10:55 pm
Vatoris slaps the mask out of Throgin's hand. "Please do not place strange stuff on you without allowing me to check it first. We... You have no idea the manner of curses and evil magic that could be on it..."
Vatoris starts casting Identify on the Mask. Once that is finished he will do the same to the magical disk...
Apr 24, 2024 4:41 am
"And don't poke strange eyes," Ixion added, "but I'm more concerned about what's in this sarcophagus."
Apr 24, 2024 5:36 pm
Throgin is quick to put a mask on his face before Vatoris finish his sentence. Putting that mask on has no any obvious effect.
OOC:
Assuming identify is cast as a ritual, it will take 20 minutes, perhaps 70 minutes if you want to identify each of 6 masks.
@Smiley what is the purpose of casting identify on an object that is not detected as magical my detect magic ?

Question: what are everyone else doing dose 20 (70) minutes if anything

Apr 24, 2024 6:25 pm
I will sit down outside the doorway of the room and, if we're going to be there an hour, take a short rest.
Apr 24, 2024 6:47 pm
OOC:
Actually, since time is not an issue, let me assume you all wait watching
While waiting for Vatoris ritual casting you notice that the eyes on the disk that keep scanning everyone is ignoring Throgin since he put the mask on.

The phenomena is later explained by Vatoris who learned that one of the masks we trying to identify is just a mast, but the eyes on the disk have some unique magical feature - these ayes have darkvision out to a range of 30 feet. If the eyes spot any humanoids inside the tomb, it was able to awaken the undead and order to attack (at least until you destroyed them). The disk of eyes can't perceive any humanoid that dons one of the papier-mâché masks you see in this room.
OOC:
OK, 20 minutes alter (or actually 30 minutes later if you want to re-cast detect magic). What do you all do?
Apr 24, 2024 7:01 pm

OOC:
Can you tell me what is your HP status? So I can know when to heal you? Or better yet all of you tell me if you are hurt right now? Or EVEN better yet: make your sheets public - If you all don't have anything against it - so I could check by myself? If there is a time for the rest, probably it will be more worth it to use it rather my spell, that can be useful in combat, but it's good to know at what status we are.
Zean - seeing that it seams everything is ok with Throgin and hearing Vatoris words - put his mask on, and stands next to Sarcophagus with his friends, ready to help with opening it.
"Yeah... I have the feeling that we ALL should wear the masks before opining sarcophagus." - he looks meaningfully at the others that still don't have the mask on.
Apr 25, 2024 9:35 am
OOC:
I guess Vatoris wouldn't benefit of a short rest, so you can spend 40 more minutes 10 to casting another detect magic and 30 more for everyone but Vatoris to gain the benefit of a short rest. Unless anyone objects I'll assume you do that.
It's about 4 hours of adventuring and you still have 4 more before you start getting tired for today.
Apr 25, 2024 11:26 am
Tinkara retrieves a mask, retreats to the other side of the broken window (out of the room) and, landing on the floor, holds the mask up with two hands as best she can, since it's probably half as tall as she is.

Creature bones lie in a dusty pile within the sarcophagus that initially look like small humanoid, but the sharp teeth as well as sharp claws on both hands and feet give out it is a sort of an animal. A ring rests atop the pile. The ring radiate an aura, but I can't make it's magic school, most probably it's magic item Vatoris announce

Sorry if this was not clear, but I only needed to see a save throw to finish the narrative. Force is pulling only Throgin. The rest of you have no idea. I think to avoid such confusions I'll in future do half-narrative as secret note to player who is required to roll a saving throw.

So here is the complete narrative:
When Throgin steps into the tall hall you hear no sound and no movement yet some magical force is pulling Throgin forward into the hall.
The rest of you see Throgin suddenly puts his legs in front of him and expect him to fall on his back, yet he slowly steps back into the corridor as if a strong wind is pushing him away of the tunnel. He fall indeed on his back once back in tunnel.

It is only a second later that Throgin realise what just happened to him: it was his Half plate that was pulling him forward. He still feel it's pressure on the back.
OOC:
Now, what do you all do? Throgin feel like he would most probably be able to move through the hall resisting the pulling force.
Apr 30, 2024 1:58 pm
OOC:
But we should somehow expect that if it would be Zean or someone else he/she would be pulled by the armor also? Or it strictly only works on Throgin ?
Apr 30, 2024 4:49 pm

Yes you can expect that. I don't say you should though. Unless you try and even then - who knows, maybe that's one time effect per character. Magic is magical.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Thorgin don't see in the dark and since everyone with light source is behind your any perception checks fail, though I would like to rule you are not totally blind outside light source, but you can barely make out two tunnels going south and north as well as the location of statue
Ignoring warning and suggestions to support him Thorgin moves into the hall again and this time fearlessly (or foolishly) moves forward. Now it is enough time for everyone to notice not just his armor seems to be attracted by the statue, but also his maul and he hand axes on his belt rise, pointing with the blades toward the statue. He seems to struggle to fight the pulling power.
Besides he is on the edge of the dim light.

Now, you should expect any metal object is drawn to the statue. Athletics check for Thorgin is a DC 10. Would it be the same DC and would it also be at disadvantage for you - that's you may only guess. Most probably a person wearing nothing metal would be safe to move through.
What does everyone do?

OOC:
@valdattaMadun you are not yet in the hall with fountain. You are in the tunnel. To move to the hall with fountain roll another Athletics checks ( I narrate assuming you passed that) and I believe you will have to do two more rolls to get back to the party if.when you eventually do that. But for now:
Watching at the water and it's flow patters Throgin figures out fountain is run by magic rather than any natural effects. Also, the pitchers are placed in a way that would make is easy to drink the water pouring. As a matter of fact it is rather tempting to do so - although sun does not reach you and it is not as hot down here in the dungeon, the air is full of dust raised by your movement.
May 3, 2024 6:50 pm
OOC:
oh I totally meant looking at the dead end closer, not the fountain
May 3, 2024 7:03 pm
OOC:
Oh well "looking" is no investigation in my books, that's why I was confused. OK, let me narrate result of your investigation then
Throgin is surprised to see nothing interesting here.
As a matter of fact absence of dust in a tunnel dead end could only mean magical reasons for dust to avoid collecting on the floor of this dungeon.
May 3, 2024 7:14 pm
OOC:
Actually wait, I'll take that roll of 20 for perception check for what I would assume to be most reasonable action - looking for hidden doors at the end of the tunnel
Throgin can't believe this is a dead end and takes a minute to check the far wall of the tunnel. Soon he find the wall is actually a hidden door - similar to one you found up there before entering tomb. The wall slides to the sides when pushed properly.
The doors open into the room you recognize - the one you killed 6 undeads just an hour ago

Throgin will yell back at the group Looks like there is a door back here leading to the front. Should I just try and come back around to you guys?
May 6, 2024 6:43 pm
Throgin makes it safe around back to the party and explain he saw a large fountain in a room to the North but didn't risk to look into the room and check if there are other corridors leading from that room. You can always return to that room later - you decide and move on.

You move back and around the balcony and enter the next wide but short tunnel: A giant stone skull crusted with moss juts out from the end of the passageway. A flame flickers within each of its eye sockets, and a view into a chamber beyond can be seen through its open jaws.
A stone sarcophagus stands at the center of the chamber you can see through the open jaws, its lid adorned with a coiled serpent carved in relief. Behind the sarcophagus, resting atop a marble pedestal, is an ornate crystal box with a small humanoid skull floating inside it.

"Another sarcophagus, another undead, another evil mouth we could crawl through... Perhaps we should take precautions to ensure it doesn't close behind or on us."

Ixion looked around for anything to prop the jaws open or at least keep them from completely closing on anyone who crawled within.
May 7, 2024 3:09 pm
Ixion looks around and only tree roots on the ceilings and and moos on the walls. thrones and sarcophagus were too large to fit the jaws besides there is hardly enough space to crawl through already...

Hi! I'm back to semi-everyday(Mon-Fri) posting :) Monday was... a loooong sprint for me. And Tuesday wasn't much better...
Wow... you have revealed quite some of rooms! :)
Referring to the room with the large stone skull as an entrance, Zean commented:
"You're right Tinks, if there was another entrance to the room with undead probably there is also another for this room...

Commenting the current view:
"Hmmm... another pulling, strange object here? This time working with the force of air or wind? You think it's magical or mechanical Vatoris? I bet plates turn it on... somehow." - Zean wondered.
OOC:
I wonder if Zean could use:
[ +- ] Shatter; 1A; 60 ft (10 ft); Instant
On the propeller ? And if Vatoris will say it is magical, if Zean could use this spell after casting Dispel Magic on it?
May 8, 2024 8:59 am
Mechanical for sure. Someone wasted quite some adamantine to make it really hard to break. Vatoris being the only one Arcana proficient in the party shares his knowledge of the material with the rest of you. The magic was only used to put that object in there - you see propeller don't fit the corridor, you will not be able to remove it, though it would cost quite some if we would get it to the city.
OOC:

- No Vatoris felt no magic in that corridor or on propeller. I will always tell you when he does, just remember he don't feel it beyond 30 feet
- You can cast Shatter. Announce spell level, mark off a spell slot and roll the damage. I will narrate the result. Recommend you to read this for more info on damaging objects.
May 8, 2024 10:07 am
I could also reduce the propeller, like I did the door. Or try to fly through, which might avoid triggering it.
May 8, 2024 10:16 pm
"Hmmmm... maybe let's first see how it works... shell we? I can see that the entire floor of the corridor is a single pressure plate... so maybe we will toss some heavier rock there and see what will happen? But certainly all of us have to be hidden behind the corner when I do this. Any objections for this little experiment of mine?" - with those words Zean looks around for some heavier stone or a piece of crumbled wall and pushes Thorign a little back to take his place, behind the corner of the corridor leading to the propeller.
OOC:
I'm referring to last map.
He waits to see if anyone objects and if everyone is safe and away from corridor entrance.

If there would be no stone or something heavier I think Zean would walk back to the first god's chamber and take one(or few) of the swords from slain undead.
May 9, 2024 9:03 am
OOC:
I'll use NPC Vatoris to help you with this, let me know if you have reservation about DM doing that
Zean brings all 6 swords and drop them one by one on the pressure plate and it moves a bit, but for no effect - pressure plate either triggers nothing or 18 pounds that 6 swords wight together is too little to trigger it.

When Vatoris throws his crowbar on top of the pile of swords propeller finally start spinning. Slow at start, it spins up to full speed in 6 seconds and keep spinning at the same speed causing strong wind to blow in the direction of chamber.
Vatoris then take away his crowbar and it takes a full minute for the blades to slow to a stop.
OOC:
At lest here - 20 feet away from source of wind it required no check/saving throw for a creature to stand it's ground (I may rule it could be harder for a flying creature).
[ +- ] Hint in case you run out of ideas
Vatirs conclude: If we run quickly in we may run past it before it is spinning too fast. I'm only concerned it will require quite some agility and luck not not get hit by any on the spinning blades even when they don't spin at the full speed.
May 9, 2024 11:22 am
Well, no pressure plate contact, no propeller, eh? That being the case, I'm willing to fly through and scout out the territory. If you like.
May 9, 2024 11:51 am
OOC:
Don't believe there would be any objects
Tinkara flies in and report to the rest of you what she see:

A deep pit opens up at the entrance to this tomb, with a stone sarcophagus resting at the bottom. A snarling monkey-like creature decorates the sarcophagus lid. Beyond the pit, three treasure chests sit on stone daises. The chest on the left is carved of black onyx, the middle chest is made of rusty iron, and the chest on the right is cast of silver and glistening with frost.

May 14, 2024 7:13 am
"So to the stone skull than!" - Zean smiled having now a clear aim for his steps.

"I think we maybe could try to use the swords to block the skull's mouth?" - Zean asked himself and everyone around in the same time. Then he went to propeller corridor and took all swords again, and walked to stone skull and started to check if he could put swords vertically in the skull mouth, so that it will be blocked even for a second, so it would provide some more time to provide an opportunity to exit the mouth in case it would start to close. Meanwhile by doing so, he checks again carefully the skull for some additional details? Are there any paintings or carvings inside the mouth?
OOC:
Maybe "not the best idea", but have no other right now:) Beside - as far as I remember - there was some kind of magic aura around the skull? Does it mean that Zean could cast dispel magic on it? And remove whatever effects it has by this ?
May 14, 2024 11:36 am
OOC:
How big is the stone skull?
"Hmm... I wonder if I could reduce the skull and we could just let it fall out of the wall."
May 14, 2024 1:27 pm
OOC:
Vertically stone skull take all 8 feet of the corridor but only half of the wall width ( so let's say 5 feet wide) It is build into the wall and as a spell caster who knows about your spell limitations you know that most probably it will not be possible to change the size of this object, because the spell has no force to break object out of it's location it is fixed into and it can't reduce object if it has something inside it, for example you can't reduce barrel full of water, but can reduce it if empty it's content (or there is less than 1/8 of water inside).

Slab block you reduced first time were not connected anywhere - there were only a magic that would have lifted it for you if you would solve that encounter properly
May 14, 2024 1:34 pm

I would ask Throgin and Tinkara to roll perception, but Zean's passive perception cover this already, so this is what you all are able to figure out
The skull's jaws are opened to make a hole barely enough for medium size creature to climb through. Sword longer dagger would probably fit, but make it impossible for person tho get past it.

Stone skull looks solid and dense. Breaking through would be just as easy as break through the wall.

Although Zean find no paintings or carvings he does notes that the lower jaw is hinged. A stout object jammed into the skull jaw's hinge may probably hold it open.
May 14, 2024 6:02 pm

Zean having a bad feeling about it, dashes toward the stone skull and tries to push Throgin aside towards the wall- what is a probably more the gesture, rather the fact, as Thorign is probably too strong for this to happen unwillingly by him.
"Thro! Stand a side for a sec... please, would you!? I don't like those flames. Will try to end them." - he turns back still being hasty to the rest of his companions - "Ixion, Vatoris! You too! Clear out of this tunnel!"

Turning back to see if Throgin is on the side of the skull, near the wall, he takes a position on the opposite side, takes his Eye Of The Storm firmly in his hand and puts its bottom tip just at the top of the stone skull. He closes his eyes - visibly focusing - and careful observant could see a stream of electricity-like waves traveling from the skull, through the tip... handle... and finally into The Eye itself... making it shine even brighter for a brief moment...

As I don't know what is the level of the spell on the skull - the roll is for this. I presume it is rolled as spell attack? So Willpower mod + proficiency? Or only Willpower mod? For now rolling with proficiency, so: +9. If only "Spellcasting Ability" that would be +5. We can subtract it after the roll.
Subtracting one lvl 3 slot fro my sheet.

After roll, Edit: Not the best roll. Hmm... depending if it was +5 or +9 I would like to use inspiration, for this. But as I read now... it looks like it have to be declared BEFORE the roll? So probably it's too late. One remark: if I would have known it is +5 for the roll and it has to be declared before, I would certainly use inspiration for this;0

Zean not knowing what is happening inside the chamber and not being sure if it had something to with what he tried to do with his attempt to theme the stone scull, rushes towards it opened jaws with intention to assist Tinkara inside the chamber.

When [if? :)] he crawled through the small hole, he falls on the floor, supporting himself not to brake his nose on the ground. When he rises his head he sees the fling skull, that is apparently gathering its strength after last shoots at Tinkara. Zean crawls towards the sarcophagus to - hopefully - have some cover from skulls shots, shouts:
"Tinks, take cover! I will try to provide us with some more time!"

and then peeks around the corner at the skull and says an invocation of Banishment.
OOC:
I decided it is not worth for now to use Turn Undead for now, for 1 skull, and instead cast Banishment spell on it, so other could have some time to enter the chamber too.
So as far as I understand this, I only declare casting the spell and it is skull that is rolling to resist against my Spell DC 17?

Crossing out one 4th level spell slot.

About movement: I figured it goes like this, referring to this map, a have speed of 30ft:
5 foot get near the stone skull,
10 to get on the other side and fall prone,
10 to crawl 2 squeres and try to hide on this side of sarcophagus.

OOC:
@Pedrop you got it right but you have not enough movement for peeking - you will end your turn skull seeing you. mechanically peeking means you move out of cover, do the action and then move back in cover, it is allowed to split movement this way.
And yes I'm rolling the save secretly so you don't know his charisma modifier
Throgins and Ixion see the flames gout out of the other skull aye as Zean crawls through
The skull disappears as he cast the spell
OOC:

OOC:
Ok, so Zean is crawling as far as he can towards the sarcophagus BUT in the way that he will still be able to cast Banishment.
May 21, 2024 6:37 pm
OOC:
in case anyone have question - I'm waiting for @annex, @valdattaMadun and @thorsman99 to post their PC first round actions.
Since skull is banished it may happen that we will not have a fight, but you only have a minute before skull returns to this plane so let's count every action.
May 21, 2024 7:06 pm
Throgin rushes over toward Tink.
OOC:
Since you can move through an occupied space of a friendly. I am assuming I could be able to use the Dash action, and make it into the room by Tink? or is Zean blocking that as a possibility?
May 21, 2024 7:22 pm
OOC:
You can move there, it's only the risk of jaws *you are still not sure how they work) that you would assuming.
May 21, 2024 7:48 pm
Having dodged the nasty rays from the skull, I will fly as far upward as possible into the curved space behind the entrance skull and hover there, ready to cast a cantrip at anything that moves and appears hostile.
May 22, 2024 4:02 am
"That was you, Zean? Well done!" Ixion said as he waited outside the open maw. "Is it gone for good?"

Someone should remain outside if the jaw snapped shut, Ixion thought, but he also readied two force blasts should the burning skull reappear.
OOC:
Staying put.
Readying Eldritch Blast if/for when the skull reappears.
May 22, 2024 5:50 am
When Throgin climbs into the mouth the lower jaw try to close with a force so strong that it eventually break the handaxe jammed into it, but it gave Throgin enough time to safely get through and gear jaws closing behind him.
It openes again a few seconds later. Ixion and Vatoris see flame flickers within each of its eye sockets again
[ +- ] MAP
OOC:
Please remove your handaxe it is rendered useless by the strong force.
Unless Zean plan to stop concentrating on banishment, will assume we are out out of initiative and you have a minute to do things. Any player who want do nothing but wait minute to finish off the creature, let me know that with a post
May 22, 2024 5:53 am
"Throgin?! Everybody good in there?!"
OOC:
Staying put, waiting it out.
May 22, 2024 9:57 am

Throgin yells back outside Yeah we are good!

Tink point to where Zean made it vanish!

Then Throgin will get in a position where he could prep an attack for it to come back.
OOC:
I know we had talk about "holding actions" outside combat but isn't this sort of the scenario where normally it is used
May 22, 2024 5:55 pm
"While it's gone, maybe we should take advantage of this time to take a look inside those holes and the sarcophagus."

OOC:
OK, will wait for @Pedrop to also confirm his PC prioritize destroying the skull over quickly opening the sarcophagus and leaving the chamber.
If he does everyone will have chance to do they ready action before skull could act when return to this plane
May 23, 2024 2:45 pm
"Most certainly... the thing will reaper very soon, I'm now holding it off this plane, but can hold it too long... uhhh..." - one could see an expression of struggle and concentration on Zean's face and even a one or two drops of sweat on his forehead - "let's prepare to end it existence once and for all. Its time is long overdue. And let's not leave it to cause troubles in the future. The place where Tinks points... let's prepare there to make a final blow."

WIth those words Zean walks carefully towards the last place they have seen flying skull, draws his Maul from his belt and prepares for a strike.
OOC:
I'm not sure how it works mechanically. Will it be a surprise? Or we just ready our actions? Thematically it could feel as surprise, but I know we are sticking very closely to 5E rules. If we ready our action:
Zean waits for skull to reaper and is going to hit it with his Maul, but also using:
[ +- ] Divine Strike (tempest domain feature)
with:
[ +- ] CD: Destructive Wrath.
So it will be -1 CD, but with certain +8 damage. Yes? I presume I should roll, when/if skulls reappear?
May 23, 2024 3:14 pm
"Anybody willing to take a peek in the sarcophagus while we wait? I've got you covered."
May 23, 2024 3:20 pm
"Sorry... Tinks... I can't loose my concentration now, besides I want to be ready as much as I can... when the thing will be back. I will gladly check the sarcophagus after flying skull will be... only a bad memory..."
May 23, 2024 3:40 pm
OOC:
OK, we restore combat and I will make it easy for you you can each now do 2 things:
1. One attack as ready action (note that multi-attack only work on your turn, though multi-beams of Eldritch blast does)
2. One full/normal turn
You can assume you are either in 5 feet of the location enemy appears or more - as you need it
Everyone prepares to kill the floating skull and it appears exactly where it disappeared from

OOC:
Out of initiative.
You may ask Tinkara IC about what happened here or - if @thorsman99 want so I could make all out past private notes readable by everyone.

Regardless, to speed us up and because the stone sarcophagus isn't locked and can be opened though require DC 15 STR check, but you are not in a hurry and even of fail first time could try again, so let's say:

After the fight Zean opens sarcophagus - not without an effort. Inside, a bundle of faded cloth holds the serpentine bones of a jaculi (creature that resembled a snake). A beautiful staff rests atop these remains. The staff's head looks like jaculi's head.
OOC:
Let me know who would like to take the staff and what do you do next
May 24, 2024 7:38 am
OOC:
Lol... Friends... you are so fast, that Zean didn't even manage to make a swing with his Maul ;) But that's good, as he saved his CD for other occasions:)
Zean releasing his concentration - after keeping it for a whole minute - had to take a few breaths first. But those few breaths were just enough for his companions to finish flying monstrosity. Zean chuckled at himself seeing that he is still holding his Maul in his hand, shrugged his arms and has put it back at his belt. Then he aimed his steps towards the sarcophagus in the center to open it.

After reaveling it contest he said:
"I think, the staff is for... humble cleric..." - he smiled, knowing well enough that the adjective 'humble' is not specifically good description of his character and extended his arm to take the staff.
OOC:
If no one objects or really want the staff -> Zean is taking it. The next artifact will be of course for someone else:)

"I'm guessing a little bit, but I think that skull belonged to a little girl, and was enchanted with her spirit. She spoke to me telepathically, and it was clear she was panicking, so I tried to calm her and be honest with her. In doing so I triggered the attack. The plaque said, 'Tell no truth to the child'. I didn't remember, and I told her the truth. I can only hope that her spirit is free now, and that she's no longer frightened and afraid."

Vatoris also remind you: the handaxe that was jamming the jaw is broken, we may need to jam it again with something else, just in case
May 28, 2024 5:50 am
"I think now that we've opened the sarcophagus, the jaw is probably deactivated. Only one way to find out."

I go down to the opening and climb through.
May 28, 2024 5:52 am
"Everybody's talking to things in their heads now," Ixion sighed. "Think we can wedge the sarcophagus lid between the jaws?"
May 28, 2024 6:04 am
Ixion and Vatoris notice one of the flames in its eye sockets snuffs out as Tinkara crawls out.
OOC:
I'd like to remind the gap between jaws is so narrows that putting any object in between jaws would prevent you from climbing though. Jamming the hinge was a clever move that did not block climbing through, but slowed down closing the jaws. You can certainly repeat that by sacrificing another blade
May 28, 2024 8:38 am
Zean caming to his senses a little, and hearing his companions conversation:
"Firends... do you remember that there was a secret passage from last sarcophagus chamber? Maybe it is here too? Let's first look for it, before risking becoming a toothpick for some stone skull, what do you think?"

Zean starts to look for secret doors on each wall of the chamber after those words. During the activity he provides another comment:
"Besides... I think the skull is only passing 2 beings before it shuts... so its the third one that triggers the jaws... I wonder if we could make it count something as being going through it?"

I nervously fly back and forth in the hall, looking constantly for anything that might be threatening.
May 30, 2024 1:47 pm
OOC:
I'm terribly sorry, forgot to narrate following
When Zean is looking at the walls he see the same maze of tiny passages cut into the walls as Tinkara saw when entered the place first time. But he could also hear a faint yet grotesque scuttling of insects from within. Passages are deep - if this would be a secret door you would see the space beyond through those passages. There is only a small art of the wall that has no holes/mazes.
Zean took his time to see and check every bit of the wall to understand how/if it could be moved, but conclude that this is not a secret door after after spending enough time.
OOC:
Since you don't know if there are no secret doors or Zein passive perception were not enough - I don't mind Throgin also rolling perception assuming PC either did not trust Zean's skills. The rest would nee to go through jaws again to be able to roll. Depending your votes in OOC I may allow Zean re-roll until player is satisfied with the roll, because unlike PC player knows the roll

Status:

Jaws are not jammed, Tinkara suggested to jam them with knife, but did not

Looks like we are waiting for
- Anyone to jam the jaws
- Zean to either climb out or spend another 5 minutes or so to keep looking for ways to move what looks like a wall (as I've just described in other threads I want to allow repeated perception check rolls at a certain cost.

Apparently most want to move on, so Zean will go out too.
"Hmm... nothing... nothing at all! So no secret door this time!?" - Zean commented his thoughts out loud, after not finding any passages in the room.

"Hmm... this sound of insects creeps me out. You are right... better let's get moving." - Zean says preparing to crawl out through the stone skull, back from the room.

Hearing that Tinkara wants to use her own blade for jamming the jaw says, before crawling in:
"That would be a real waste Tinks! Let's better use swords of undead guardians from the first tomb. They should still be laying at the beginning of the norther corridor with a propeller. Vatoris, you think you could bring one of those and jam the jaws, before me and my Brother in Thunder will be making our daring escape?"
Jun 3, 2024 1:01 pm
Sure Vatoris is really quick to get back with a sword and fit's point into the jaws hinge. Here you go he announce.
Jun 3, 2024 1:06 pm
"Thank you a lot, friend!" - and with those words Zean crawls out through stone skull.
Jun 3, 2024 1:32 pm
Tinkara, Ixion and Vatoris see the second flame goes out when Zean crawls out, but nothing else happens.
Longsword is still jamming the jaws.
Jun 3, 2024 2:25 pm
"Good job guys! Let's get on with it!
Jun 3, 2024 5:14 pm
Throgin then goes through the jaws as fast as he can.

I fly once again down the hallway, past the propeller and into the room with the three chests. I will then examine the room for any evidence of a disabling mechanism.
OOC:
Everyone please review the lore dump. The last line on the first plaque is "The keys turn on the inside only." My thinking is that somehow applies to this room. I think the carved birds at the entrance are indicative that the way through is to fly. The relevant map is on page 8. I'm open to suggestions as to how to proceed.

Zean looks carefully at propeller...
"I wander how is it attached to its axis... could it be disassembled somehow maybe? You know... taking it off the axis... makes it harmless. Maybe we don't have to destroy the whole propeller, just put the blades out of order? With precision hit in the middle? Or putting some sand between its bearing? If that doesn't work... I may try to Shatter it... or it will be a fast exercise... probably for Thorgin of hit-and-run... ?"

As Throgin approaches with his maul, I quickly fly back to the tunnel entrance to get out of his way.

"Hey! Give a girl a chance to get out of the way, will ya?"
Jun 4, 2024 7:09 pm
Despite his muscle mass Throgin is fast. He is out of the tunnel the moment when the wind is blowing strong. He steps off the pressure plate and you wait about a minute for spinning blades to slow to a stop. That's when you can see, or more precisely can't see even a scratch on the propeller.

Adamantine... say Vatoris impressed by object durability.
OOC:
Again to speed up process - any repeated Throgin's attempts to break propeller with his maul will render inefficient
Jun 5, 2024 7:59 am
"Hmmm.... I'm starting to be out of ideas? But wait... is it just a flow of air in one direction? I don't think it is something magical that makes a pushing and pulling force of the air. Just the propeller spining?" - Zean looked at Vatoris to check his expression on this claim - "So... maybe... if we put a force against it, it will neutralize the air flow and will allow us to move freely in the tunel, so we could avoid the blades easily and go into the final chamber? But... the air flow is into the tunnel... so me working against it with me calling the power of wind from seven seas, would required to be on the other side of tunnel already? Sigh..."
OOC:
Lol.. writing this I also started to see many problems in my idea of using:
[ +- ] Gust of wind
Against the air flow... just like my character:)

But as far as I remember in OSE there was possibility to cast "a reverse version of spell" (or was it a different system?) - is such thing in 5E.
"So... maybe it's better to make it a tiny propeller that will be easy to brake from celling as Tinks suggested... or... as it also looks like a tomb of one of the idols, maybe there is another way in? (this time?) As in first tomb?"
Jun 5, 2024 8:34 am
Vatoris: Technically wind blow the direction we want go. Wind is not the problem, the problem is getting past the spinning blades. Blades.
OOC:
Since wind produced by Gust of wind and propeller are different in nature I'd like to rule they don't simply neutralize each other, but cause chaos: tiny tornadoes and such. I would say if both are affecting a creature we roll 1d2 to decide whichever prevails at the moment. Or we could do some sort of opposed roll 1d20+your spell casting modifier VS 1d20+N for propeller. Whenre N is based on it's saving throw DC you don't yet know.

Jun 5, 2024 5:36 pm
What about in the room itself? you think you can grab whatever is in there and then we move on?
OOC:
While I don't want to put Tinkara at too much risk, if you have something along the bounds of Misty Step the plan could be to gather what is needed and escape quickly. I think what we have found so far is "get an item and leave" is just as viable as duke it out to the end?

1. Red robes dropped in a messy manner, an orb and a book that looks like wizard's spell book and flat iron rod has a button on one end
2. An inch-long gold key protruding from an adamantine (since it is same metal as propeller Tinkara is able to recognize it ) keyhole set into the underside of the chest's lid
Jun 6, 2024 8:38 am
Interesting. I will fly to the iron chest and open it.
Jun 6, 2024 8:51 am
It opens and there is similar gold key protruding from an adamantine keyhole set into the underside of the chest's lid. Nothing else though.
Jun 6, 2024 9:12 am
That being the case, I will open the silver chest.
Jun 6, 2024 10:25 am
Silver chest opens and there also a gold key in the chest's lid, but chest is otherwise empty.
Jun 6, 2024 11:27 am
"Okay, I'm going to turn these keys, and then we'll see what happens! Stand ready!"

I turn the keys, starting with the silver chest, then the iron, and last the onyx.
Jun 6, 2024 11:45 am
They does not turn, however you try. Key cannot be removed either (if you try that).
OOC:
Mechanically - it looks like the key turns just a little bit and then stuck: you can move them line 10 degrees, no more. Rotation is the only movement that could be done with the key though.
Jun 6, 2024 12:36 pm
OOC:
Okay, so then I'm going to ask... are the chests small enough to get into?
I will examine the chests more carefully to see if I'm missing something.

And no I am not hiding any more details from you, no roll required
Tinkara discover the robe is quite dusty as she take it out, nothing else notable
Jun 6, 2024 1:56 pm
Meanwhile Zean is staying in ready, worried about Tinkara closing herself inside the chest... alone. To kill some time, he tries to examine the floor panels in the tunnel behind him, if they could be somehow blocked to not lower themselves under his weight. Maybe sticking some items on their sides under the panel? He is also considering if they could be... simply broken with strong hit of a hammer, so they could get to the triggering mechanizm underneath them??
Jun 6, 2024 2:08 pm
"Guys, I'm gonna get in the iron chest and try to turn the key. If that doesn't go well... it's been great!"

I get into the iron chest, lower the lid, and try once more to turn the key.
Jun 6, 2024 2:43 pm
OOC:
What a timing... this is fascinating and sad at the same time
Vatois join Zean in his investigation. Ex-Pirate and Artificer soon realize that although it wouldn't be possible to break whole floor, is would not be impossible wedging an iron spike or similar object under a plate on all 4 corners.
If you scarify 4 more of the swords, Tinkara would probably manage to stick them in on the other side... wait where's Tinkara ? Vatois has been to involved in mechanical problem that missed Tinkara's actions.

That's when you realize Tinkara have been in chest for too long....

I'll tell thorsman99 in private what happened, none of the other PCs know that

I think we have to act fast! She is trapped there and we don't know how those chests work! Quick... we have to risk it... - with those words Zean hands one sword to Vatoris, Throgin, Ixion and takes one himself - "We have to block this plate. I will go for the other side, hopefully Throgin will join me. Ixion and Vatoris would have to do it on this side. Agreed? Are we doing this? - Zean looked at his friends faces checking if they agree with the plan, showing them he is ready to risk a run towards other side of the plate (let's not talk about spinning blades for now... ;) ).
OOC:
I would make a roll for this, but I think we will get the most dramatic effect if all four of us would roll at the same time:) So no one would have a prior information whether it worked:) And since it is PbP - my proposition is to GM make this roll for all of us if/when all other players would agree. What you think @annex,@valdattaMadun ?

I will be using my Inspiration for this certainly :)

Ok... understood. To be honest I thought the triggering panel is only on the part of the tunnel that lays from our current position just to the propeller(so half the tunnel). So I thought we have to be 'only' fast and precise enough to block it before it will get to its full speed. But right now I recalled that the propeller is hanging from the celling, yes? So the activation panel is all the way through the tunnel?

So no need to block it at the same time from 4 corners? Hmmm.... so my whole post is almost irrelevant:(

I would go there, but I have -1 to Dex... :( Would my:

And could:

You watch breathless how Throgin runs through the quickly spinning blades and mange what looks like impossible - the big man pass them without getting hurt. He reach the other side and jump over the pit....
Now on the other side he realize it wouldn't be as easy to hammer the sword because plate almost reach the edge of the tunnel: if he would stand in the tunnel he would press the plate. The pit is 20 feet deep and he just can't reach the plate...

Looking into the pit and considering what do do next Throgin see a silver iron button on the the sarcophagus lid. He don't recall Tinkara mentioned a button...

A 20 foot deep pit at the entrance to this tomb. A stone sarcophagus resting at the bottom. A snarling monkey-like creature decorates the sarcophagus lid. A single button on the lid appears to be made of iron.

Three treasure chests sit on stone daises. Chest on the left is carved of black onyx and is open. In this chest there are red robes dropped in a messy manner, an orb and a book that looks like wizard's spell book and flat iron rod has a button on one end
Middle chest is made of rusty iron is closed.
Chest on the right is cast of silver and glistening with frost it is open.

Throgin do find it: Tinkara's suggestion to tie a rope around a chest turns into a perfect solution. The chest don't move an inch and he climbs down with an ease

Jun 12, 2024 10:11 am
OOC:
I have two daggers. One is a backup, which I presume is also rusty now? I also have darts, ball bearings, and caltrops.
"Whew! I'm glad to be back, Zean! Yeah, I have two daggers, some darts, and some ball bearings and caltrops. I wonder if they're all rusty now?"

I quickly check my inventory to see the status of my metal items.

"Yes, yes, here you are. Please, take them." - Zean hands Tinks a sword, one by one, so it will be enough to block the plate on other side - "Say - when, and I will block it on my side. After that we should be able to enter this tunnel at last, but I recommend to go there one by one, we never know how much weight those swords could support."
OOC:
Zean will help Tinks as much as he can and after they will be sure to plate is secured he will go in first. To test their work.
Jun 12, 2024 10:43 am
I fly back and place the swords in coordination with Zean.
Jun 12, 2024 1:42 pm
Tinkara blade of both of her daggers corroded into worthless piles of rust. Darts partly made of metal are ruined as their metal components decay. Ball bearings and caltrops are also gone.

You manage to block the plate of the floor nevertheless, even if it take some time and some failed attempts.
Although it costs you a few attempts where Zean start moving and have to return, wait minute for propeller to stop and then repeat, but eventually you manage to block it properly. Zean make his way through the tunnel and jump over the pit to the other side.
OOC:
Everyone with STR score 15+ could jump over the pit, the rest of you will need to figure out a way to get over the pit or climb down/up.
I will not be able to jump as you just did and I don't like the idea to tie rope to a propeller, but probably that's the only way Vatoris suggest an option for how he and Ixion could reach tomb.

"Well, hate to say it guys, but that was my 'take one for the team' climbing into these chests to turn the keys. If anyone has an extra dagger, a lady would like to have a little something to defend herself.

Throgin, can you move the lid of the sarcophagus? If not, I suspect we'll probably have to work each of the keys to get it open. I would imagine the right hand chest probably does cold damage, and the left one... I wonder if the former occupant of those robes got sent to some void or something."

After Zean gets to the chamber:
"Oh... interesting chests I can see here... So what was happening when you were inside one of those chest? Did I got it right - from what I have heard and see being distanced from you - there are keys inside each of the chest, but you can turn them only from inside? Could we weight them somehow with something... I don't know... with something heavy tided to the key by a string... so they would turn themself after closing a lid? Or maybe this rod... position it in the way it will make them turn when lid will be closed? Or... would Vatoris magic hand work being inside?" - Zean - as usual - had many ideas... but if anyone of those could be even somehow useful?
Jun 12, 2024 10:22 pm
"Zean my friend, those are all interesting ideas. I can assure you of only one thing: I won't get in one to turn the key again. Perhaps we should examine the contents of the onyx chest to see if they might help us. I can try the mage hand thing - it costs nothing Vatoris moves to the edge of the pit but stay on the other side of it. He creates mage hand in one of the boxes trying to estimate location of the key when the lid will close, but no matter haw you try nothing happens. After some time of investigations Tinkara remember she did hear the clumps snap open when was inside the chest closing the lid. That sound does not come when you close the chest with no creature inside...

Vatoris moves back at the entrance to the tunnel and suggest Ixion to step forward as he may have more ideas.
OOC:
@annex still with us? Vatoris will stay to secure swords blocking the plate just in case, so feel free to move into the tomb for any assistance, though you would need to figure out how to get past the 2- feet deep pit.

@thorsman99 you can add immovable rod to your inventory, though I would prefer you ask Vatoris to identify it for you at some moment before your PC understand it's limitations.
Jun 13, 2024 11:15 am
I sigh heavily.

"Looks like they want a living being inside the chest to turn the key. Anybody have a familiar? Trained monkey?"
Jun 13, 2024 11:51 am
"Unfortunately... I have left my elep... uhhh... ouch... - Zean tried to joke about leaving his elephant guarding their ship at the port... but strangely the words got stuck mid sentence in his mouth and his face showed some signs of inner pain.

"What the...!? I can't even joke right now? Because of you?" - Zean asked 'in the air' as referring to someone invisible above or next to him. What probably surprised his companions.

"Tinks... you also have an annoying stowaway with you... since you took the ring from the previous sarcophagus?" - Zean asked supporting himself by his hands on his knees and apparently recollecting after experiencing a sudden and strong pain.
Pedrop sent a note to GreyWord
"I think we have to know how the chest detect if someone is inside? Probably Magic. So we will have to help Vatoris here. Besides... do you think Plants also counts as 'living being'?" - Zean looked around if there is any overgrowing plants in this chamber(roots?).

"Or maybe we will be forced to 'lend' one of those insects from the stone skull room... it also acted as it would detect life passing through it? Anyone have a proper sack for it? Or something like this?" - Zean threw another hypothesis.

Jun 14, 2024 4:59 am
"Perhaps we should just use the door?" Ixion said with a smirk as an arcane arch appeared before him and Vatoris. If Vatoris isn't keen on going in, Ixion will go step through the doorway alone.

Vatoris steps through the doors with Ixion and answer Tinkara That could work, let's try on the way back
He then ritually identify one of the chests.

That's truly wonderful chest. Acererak is terrible evil, but he is a brilliant designer. The chest lid has adamantine clumps that opens when lid is closed and a live humanoid is inside a chest. Clumps prevent keys to be turned. Turning a key trigger two things: button to appear on sarcophagus and clumps to shut.

Using the rope he gets down sarcophagus and soon share
I'm afraid I can't tell what happens when button on sarcophagus is pressed - I didn't felt the magic aura and I can't seem to be able to identify sarcophagus, which obviously means it is protected against spells such spells.

Tinkara dear, I've explained all about chest mechanics already and I can't read what the sarcophagus buttons does.
Let me try to explain this on an example. Say want cut a monster with your dagger. And the monster try to read your mind, but your mind is protected against mind reading. Monster try to read your dagger - dagger is not protected, but dagger don't want to hurt anyone...
So here chest is the dagger, but sarcophagus is the host protected against mind reading...
OOC:
It takes Vatoirs an effort to explain the reasons and he may or may not succeed at that, but the fact is - he can't tell what will happen to person in chest when the button on sarcophagus is pressed. His ability to scan objects have it's limits.
Jun 14, 2024 3:41 pm
"Okay. It was worth the ask. Anyone willing to get in the remaining two chests? I can certainly fly down and work the sarcophagus buttons. Throgin, climb on up if you're willing to be brave and get in a chest."
Jun 14, 2024 7:23 pm
More than willing to get out of this hole... Throgin says as he climbs up the rope.

He will then look at Tink and her dagger. Do we think that it is safe to bring our weapons into the chest or should I leave all my metal stuff out here?
Jun 14, 2024 8:39 pm
"I suspect it was only the rusty iron chest that ate metal. The silver chest, with its frost, I would take blanket and cloak against cold, if no spells are available. The onyx... I'm afraid I have no idea."

I fly down to the sarcophagus and hover, ready to push the button as soon as it appears to minimize time in the chest.

Jun 15, 2024 6:49 am
"Throgin! Wait! Those clothes that are left there Suggests someone could become disintegrated in there! Don't close the lid!"
Jun 15, 2024 3:05 pm
we got to try something let me take a chance and Throgin closes the lid
Jun 15, 2024 3:12 pm
"I'm ready to push the button as soon as it appears, Throgin."
Jun 16, 2024 8:05 am
Muffled click sounds as the clamps around the key on the lid release.
OOC:
I expect Throgin to turn the key, but don't want to assume, will wail for @valdattaMadun say that
Jun 17, 2024 3:37 pm
In the now dark chest, Throgin takes a deep breath then turns the key
Jun 17, 2024 6:06 pm
Throgin locks the chest with the key and chests is locked and clamps return to their positions.
Tinkara immediately push the onyx button that appears on sarcophagus
Destructive pulse of energy flow through Throgin's body.

Jun 17, 2024 9:20 pm
"What's happening in there, Fist?!"
Jun 17, 2024 9:59 pm
Having pressed the bottom, I fly up to the chest as well.

"Throgin? You okay?"
Jun 18, 2024 7:00 am
The pain that would crash weaker person's will to live only anger Throgin.
OOC:
No damage taken, your save avoided all of the damage
And sarcophagus now experience two pressed buttons: onyx and rusty.
Jun 18, 2024 4:17 pm
I am good. Sort of felt like a massage...

Throgin throws out the conment sarcastically.

so what is next, i jump in that one and they give me a bath?
Jun 18, 2024 7:20 pm
"Do you want to do the other chest, or should we get another volunteer? Does anyone have a resistance to cold spell?"
Jun 18, 2024 7:56 pm
Zean...just hit me with that Juice again and I will get at it.

Appreciate the worry Tinkara but it isn't in me to pass up a chance to prove my worth. Besides...another tickle might just get this kink out of my neck
Throgin says with a smile
Jun 18, 2024 8:23 pm
I nod and fly back down to the sarcophagus, ready to push the silver button as soon as it appears.
Jun 18, 2024 9:17 pm
With a deep breathe he walks up to the chest and looks for Zean to apply Resistence.
OOC:
If we are assuming Zean just applies it, I will get in and close the chest and turn the key. Otherwise I will wait for Zean
Jun 19, 2024 9:56 am
"Sigh... I don't have anything from our Thunder that could protect you from cold... and let's hope it will be the cold only. But you can always count on there magnificent energy of the Storm that leads and protects." - with those words Zean put his hand on Throgin shoulder and applys the electrical field that spreads allover Throgin's body.
OOC:
Yes, of course casting Resistence on Thorgin.

Jun 19, 2024 4:44 pm
OOC:

Recap:
Throgin took 23 points of cold damage, but could get out of box now
Sarcophagus turned crystalline, buttons gone. A mace that looks probably magical is inside.
Anyone but Tinkara would need to use rope to descend into 20 feet deep pit to reach Sarcophagus. Rope is still where Throgin secured it.

Your actions?
Jun 19, 2024 4:55 pm
"I'd break the sarcophagus, but I'm fresh out of weapons to smack it with. So I think someone is going to have to climb down if we want that mace."

I will examine the other contents of the Onyx chest. Particularly the book.
Jun 19, 2024 5:52 pm
Thanks Tink. Maybe Zean could help out?

Throgin looks at the sacophagus thinking about breaking it once healed up
Jun 19, 2024 6:30 pm
"If our luck holds, we should expect something nasty and undead once that sarcophagus is opened."
Jun 19, 2024 7:41 pm
"That... that was brave. Maybe stupid, but brave too. I must say, Brother. Luckily looks like there is some prize for your efforts in the sarcophagus. You earned it much more than we earned ours. But first... let the electricity of lightning recharge your chilled tissues..." - and with those words Zean starts to hold his Eye Of the Storm directly above Throgin head and starts making crackling sounds with his mouth, that soon influence the Eye so that little, gentle discharges start to travel from Eye's pupil to Throgin's top of his head and down the spine...

Seeing that Throgin is about too loose his temper and will soon rage, Zean forfeits his thought of joining his friend down in the pit. He was also thinking about giving the nasty monkey the same medicine with power of turning undead, but his wisdom advised him that the creature will come to his senses immediately after Throgin will beat some senses back to it with his maul. So he decided to 'enlighten' its dim mind and body with some more light... hoping to have a bigger impact this time on it. Hoping in the same time that his soon-to-be big friend will leave the pit, so he will be able to cast literate storm in the pit.

TBH surprised you did the only attack reckless - allowing enemy to attack with advantage both opportunity and normal
Throgin bash the creature with the maul into the corner and cry his battle cry everyone have seen before - he is making bigger yet again and jumps out of the pit with little effort swinging the rope with a single hand.

Mumified monkey use the moment to try reach him with the rotten fist. Then it follow: undead movement is slow, but monkey ability to use both - hands and feet to walk the rope some at hand. It manages to keep up with Throgin and reach for him once again, while throwing his Dreadful Glare at Zean
Throgin don't suffer the beating as much as he feel necrotic energy through his body coming from the undead creature fists.
OOC:
Zean need to succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw against this magic or become frightened, looks like there is very low chance though is is possible

@Pedrop if your PC don't want it either Vatoris will pick it and carry just out of curiosity about a magic item (as an artificer he is very much into magic items). Though he would never use a Str based weapon in combat.

Regardless. You have cleared most of this level - you can take a look at level map by clicking on DM avatar. The river beneath the floor and the room north of the magnetic field statue left unexplored, but it is probably fine. Do you want to proceed to next level (see details of next level here.?

OK I assume Vators takes the mace
When Vatoris touch the mace Red smoke seethes from the head of the mace, forming the outline of a monkey with a long tail. With a roar, the smoky apparition leaps at you, screaming, "Let me in!"

How does work what? Vatoris not sure about Throgin's question. The magical darkness?

He provides a lecture :
Magical darkness typically spreads from a point spell caster's choose and spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it.
If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a weaker spell, the light is dispelled.

OOC:
yeah Thorsman is right. that was my attempt at asking for that
Jun 28, 2024 5:55 pm
OOC:
Oh sorry. Don't think I made clear enough, let me try explaining what happened in OOC instead
First of all - only Ixion see into the magical darkness. No other PC saw the face withing the darkness
Second Ixion believe that what he saw was a human like creature moving sideways to avoid poking. He could guess that it is not just a head, but a humanoid. But he only see the face and probably shoulders due to the size of the hole.

I'll provide a bit more details to Ixion in private
GreyWord sent a note to annex
Jun 28, 2024 7:42 pm
Ixion was taken aback by the attempted possession but he smiled at the willpower of Vatoris to resist.

"A fiend," Ixion said after the stick poke, "I think there's a devil or demon back there. Should we go in after it or just move on? I don't want to leave any threats behind us but... I just don't like it."

Zean is willing to go down to see what is the source of the water. But he doesn't like idea of entering something that is so dark, that you never know what could hide inside.
OOC:
So could Zean use:
[ +- ] 4lvl: Control Water; 1 A; 300 ft; Conc 10m
?? I think I'm most interested in:
"Redirect Flow. You cause flowing water in the area to move in a direction you choose, even if the water has to flow over obstacles, up walls, or in other unlikely directions. The water in the area moves as you direct it, but once it moves beyond the spell's area, it resumes its flow based on the terrain conditions. The water continues to move in the direction you chose until the spell ends or you choose a different effect."

To move the flowing water from the bottom of riverbed to the sides/walls - so Zean could walk upstream seeing how deep it is and if anything is in there?
Jul 2, 2024 12:15 pm
Underground river flow is stopped by Zean magic and it soon runs out of water revealing slippery riverbed but nothing live.
Zean follow upstream until he smell rotten odor. Looks like transparent gas in this area. And there are stairs up

Jul 3, 2024 12:11 pm
Stairs up is a dead end and you follow the river until it turns into a larger pool of water that seems to ignore Zean's magic Tinkara flies few foot forward and explain you the reason:
Water were pouring from cracks and seams in the rough walls of the cavern she fly in. Since magic can't make river flow upwards the water stay in this cavern but no new water is flowing.
Just above the muddy pool's surface, a large treasure chest dangles from rusty chains embedded in the ceiling. A keyhole shaped like a cackling demon skull decorates the front of the lid. Encircling the keyhole, a tiny inscription in Common reads, "I devour all but the greatest thieves."

Vatois announce an aura of evocation magic around the chest.
OOC:

The chest is 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, 3 feet high, and suspended 1 foot above the surface of the water pool.
I don't mind Zean controlling the water in a way to make all water go away - in that case chest will be hanging 6 feet above the floor making it difficult for lock picking (disadvantage if anyone try to lock pick it). That is - if anyone even had lock picks.
The picture below shows tunnel and waterfall as it was before control water.

Ask anyone if they think water would help somehow with this chest or if he can help in any other way and then departs to the unexpectedly ending staircase and looks for something that could tell him if there would be any secret passage or something in the place the surprising wall is.

The underground river plunges down into a dark, rocky chasm. Cold air swirls up from below like the breath of some monstrous creature. Through the gloom, you spot an ornate treasure chest resting on a ledge opposite.
Ixion's superior vision allows him to see the bottom of the rift: he see water approximately 100 feet down.

Throgin enraged by the the creature pretended to be chest attacking Vatoris release the rope that falls down into the rift and jumps over bashing his axe into to chest. He want to swing it again, but can't - axe sticked to the mimic. Only that moment barbarian realizes his large body don't have enough space and he may fall down if release the axe.
OOC:
Sorry to skip this earlier, but though everyone knows the cliche mimic. As stated above "The mimic adheres to anything that touches it." including your handaxe.

@valdattaMadun please read below and I will allow you to make a choice to re-post your turn and delete the post you did if you were missing some of both of the points. If you stay with your turn I would like to give you Inspiration though, I find that bold move very inspiring.

1. I'm ignoring your sedond attack, because hadaxe sticked to mimic after the first attack and you used your one free object interaction this turn already (have no time to grab another one).

2. Also your "Giant's Havoc" feature I believe it is not your choice. You always become large when raging if there is enough space. There is so little space that if you release your handaxe sticked to mimic you will fall down the 100 feet.

I actually pulled out my handaxe specifically because my off hand could be holding the rope at the same time. sorry thought I posted that.

Could I instead make it so I raged just before/during the jump I threw my handaxe before/while jumping on the first attack so that it would actually have returned to my hand, and then did the 2nd attack normally?

This would take away my ability to reckless on the first attack but even if it is done switching that to disadvantage I think it would probably hit? I would even trade off the inspiration for this to work

OK, let's assume Vatirs had no problem with Throgin holding an ax while insuring Vatoris safety. And yes Elemental Cleavor would solve problem with sticking. I still need you to decide if you jump-and-rage or not. There is no space for large creature on the other side.

I think it will be my last post before vacations. So take care - all of you - mainly IRL, but after our PCs too! :) Zean would probably protect others first, than... be curious:) See you around 23rd!
Zean seeing that his friends are fighting - literally - at the edge, being at the waterfall edge himself, takes out his blessed by the thunder maul. He rises it heigh above his head and lowers it with surprising speed of thunder, so even flowing water is pushed away for second by the flow and speed of air caused by rapid movement. The maul in the very moment of connecting with the ground makes an awfully loud sound that Zean seams to control by his will and makes it precisely bounce off the cave walls and focus it entire force at the mimic, hopefully making sound wave so strong that it will shove the mimic together with his friends held by it towards the cave wall, crash mimic against it's hard surface and make it so shocked that it will let go his friends.

The last sentence is how I imagine it - AND is meant to make sure that spell effect won't make Throgin or Vatoris fall down! Otherwise Zean wouldn't use it. But I imagined that if the mimic will end up 'prone' it could mean it stopped to hold Vatoris and Throgin? Maybe?

I fly back up to the rest of the party and describe what I've seen below.

"I'm great at flying, but I'm not a great swimmer, and I'm unarmed except for spells. How critical is it that we retrieve this handaxe?"
Jul 11, 2024 5:41 pm

Honestly, I was just trying to add flavor to something that wouldn't have functionally made a difference here. Before it was dropped next to Vatoris, he could have picked it up and brought it over just fine. I was thinking of just adding "flavor" to it, in a way that made 0 mechanical benefit to me. So if I could pull that back I would, as my intention was more "look at this cool thing that doesn't actually matter" than actually change the mechanical difference but if we have to play it out now it doesn't matter to retrieve, it wouldn't be at all different than my javelins other than less range and damage type
ummm probably not that much

OOC:
You know what I think i misread your initial narration know, when comparing to my expectation of scene (before the saves). My handaxe was essentially grappled/sharing a space as the mimic when it died. (important thing to note, my weapons don't grow with me), so I was thinking it was in the square the mimic use to inhabit or at most during the process one square over (which would still be on the ground), as I let go of the handaxe when making the "attempt not to fall" save, my thought was my handaxe was in that square.

To me, it being on the ground was the logical conclusion as it rolling 8-10ft-ish wouldn't make sense. So i was under the 'well if it is going to fall anyway and be picked up, might as well make it 'look cool' not the 'he spared me losing it, I want more'. I am 100% fine of it dropping, if that was a "generous" ruling, I was thinking it was the 'default" ruling
