It's raining in London... again (RP)

After thanking Stefano for all his help and promising to find a way to help him finish his model, Benji leads Rhiannon and whoever else wants to explore the tunnel through a sliding metal security grille, down a narrow staircase, and into the old, disused Edwardian parts of Piccadilly Circus station. There are no staff or security cameras down here and this way no one will see them jumping down onto the tracks.

"Don’t mind the mice," he says as one darts out of a crack in the wall, spooked by the sound of footsteps. "They’re very friendly once you get to know them."
OOC:
Not sure if the abandoned parts of the station actually connect to the tracks in any way irl or if they were bricked off completely but I figured I would take some creative liberties… Hope that’s okay!

She peeks at the footage behind Mark saying. "What does it look like to you?"

After she followed Benji down and noted the mice, "No foxes yet then? They have been known to take a train or bus from time to time. Not long and they’re gonna be driving the things."

The tunnels are dark but you, presumably, planned for this and brought your own light, even if it is just the flash on your cell phone.

Those of you who have not been down onto the tunnel tracks might not have planned for the dirt, though. Every surface is covered with a fine but gritty, dark grey, dust. Whether this is left over from days of steam and coal, or is from the basalt stone the tracks rest upon is impossible to tell, but you are covered in the stuff almost immediately, it sticks to your skin as the uncomfortably warm and humid tunnels cause you to start sweating lightly. Once you touch this layer it starts to itch faintly, like the memory of sandpaper on skin, best to avoid doing so if you can.

The wooden sleepers that lie crosswise between the metal tracks at first seem like a good place to step, but you soon discover that they are slippery, someone almost falls across the third rain, and you quickly learn to walk on the ankle breaking ballast instead.

What do you do?

Mark turned to Rhiannon and said, "It is hard to tell from the footage. The demon that escaped from Jacob's bookshop did opened a kind of portal. It might be a similar thing here but then the passengers should have noticed something unless they have someway to mask it. If I could exactly go to the place in the video, I could get a better idea. But alas, I don't think it will be possible now."

While following others on the tracks, he continued to keep his pace up, trying his level best to not let any dirt touch his skin.

Benji laughs loudly at Rhiannon’s joke, highly amused by the idea of foxes driving buses. He feels very much at home down here, deep beneath London. The grime doesn’t bother him all that much and the darkness feels comfortable and welcoming. He walks alongside Mark, following Rhiannon’s lead.

Jacob looks disgusted at the dirt that now covers every inch of his suit.

"Benji, I hope this doesn't take too long. Do you know how much it will cost me to clean this suit?"
OOC:
Perhaps it's because I was disconnected for a week, but now I'm not sure why we got into the tunnels. Are we going to investigate the train where the demons appeared?

Suddenly the signal lights on the walls light up, red and then green. Those who know the tracks would know- but most could guess- that this is because a train is headed down the tunnel out of hours, this also means that the third rail (though there appear to be four, if anyone is paying attention) is definitely live for the moment —you don't know otherwise, and assuming it is powered off when the lights are off seems risky.

There is enough space next to the rails that you could press yourselves against the filthy, damp walls and void being hit by the train, but the driver would definitely see you and probably report 'pedestrians on the tracks' unless you find a place to hide or take some other action to avoid such an outcome. There are service corridors and old, disused sections off to the sides of the tracks, you passed one some distance back, but there is probably somewhere ahead, in the direction you are moving, where you could hide.

Looking behind you you see red lights on the walls, this means the train is approaching from behind, heading in the same direction you are.

What do you do?

Rhiannon dives into the darkness embracing her instincts as she tries to track down her prey. She can avoid the train by pushing into a side area and then get a sense of where the demons are.

Mark raised his eyebrows in horror as the reality of a train coming struck him. He wasn't expecting trains to be running at this time of the night. He quickly dived at the side area and pressed his body vertically flat against the wall so that he won't be struck by the train. Instead of facing the tracks, he face the wall so as to avoid his face being seen by the driver of the incoming train.

Mark was not sure if his effort to protect himself will be enough. His eyes darted as he searched for some intersection where there might be some space to crouch and hide.

"Damn," Jacob mutters under his breath, noticing the flashing lights and the sound of the oncoming train behind them.

Rhiannon and Mark swiftly leap aside, flattening themselves against the tunnel's wall. Realizing the danger, Jacob follows suit. Searching for a side passage ahead in the tunnel is too dangerous, and time is not on their side.

- Rhiannon -

It is hard, or even impossible, to track demons that are not currently around, and the ones you are interested in were on a train carriage and not in the tunnel itself,... but you do get a clear enough sense of their passing —like 20 hours ago.

This 'sense' is not 'natural', do any of the other members of your Hunter's Society know about this ability of yours? Did you even know you could do this? Is it worrying? Your present company would probably not be bothered by such things, but then they are not all all that acceptable to your society anyway.

You get the impression of demon passage all the way back to Piccadilly Circus —about a 100m behind you— as well as about the same distance forward, then nothing after that. It is like they were not around past about 250m into the tunnel. The next(/previous) station is Green Park, which is only about 700m from Piccadilly, but there is no vestige of demons in the later part of the tunnel.

The train thunders past, it is long and goes on and on and on. It is probably ferrying a surplus of empty carriages back to where they are needed for tomorrow. Facing away as you are, it is hard to be know for sure, but you don't get any indications of alarm from the driver noticing people on the tracks.

Eventually the train passes, and a while later the swirled-up dust settles and you can open your eyes again.

You possibly turn your lights back on and, maybe, dust yourselves off. Everyone is covered in a fresh layer of clinging dust. Unlike everyone else, Rhiannon also brushes black feathers from her clothes.

Benji blinks and shakes off the dust. "Well, that was exciting!" he says, apparently completely unfazed by the fact that they were all nearly flattened by a train. "Any sign of the demons, Rhiannon?"
Jun 25, 2024 3:15 pm
"A few signs they were here almost a day ago. Something further back and then maybe something ahead but like they appeared in the middle of the track somewhere down that way." What she’d just done was entirely out of her understanding. Usually she had to search the ground for tracks and that sort of thing, this time she’d felt an actual connection to The Morrigan

"They really ought to have been on camera back that way, but maybe they just knew where not to walk."
Jun 26, 2024 9:42 am
"Let’s take a look at the spot where they suddenly appeared," suggests Benji. "There must be some reason they appeared there and not somewhere closer to Jacob’s, right?"
Jun 26, 2024 5:49 pm
"So, Benji, do trains often run this late? I just want to ensure we're not risking our necks again," Jacob remarks sarcastically, yet he follows Rhiannon regardless.
Jun 26, 2024 6:28 pm
She brings them to the spot, down the tracks where the demons appeared. "Right here, I can even see some sulphur or as they used to call it brimstone from their arrival."
Jun 27, 2024 7:12 am
Mark rubbed off the dust from his coat. This dress was a mess and would need some special cleaning once he gets home. "That was a close one. I would not want to risk another sudden train passing." He moved closer to the place where Rhiannon pointed and started feeling the wall or floor. Could there be any remnant magic remaining here?
Jun 27, 2024 7:40 am
- Mark -

The tunnel around the tracks seems awfully cramped to be performing summoning rituals —even with the electricity off before the first train in the morning, you think the iron tracks would wreak havoc on such a spell— and you do not get a sense of such magic right here.

Someone does find an old and battered stepladder —just the right height for entering a train from ground level... but the train does not stop here? Right?

There is a definite impression of something more subtle at play. A residue of large magic to fool the senses. It does not affect you now... or you don't think so... it might be aimed at making one think there is nothing to see here and suggest forgetting about it and going home. That sounds like a good idea, actually. This is a waste of time. Go home.
