Chapter 1: Something in the Water

May 13, 2024 1:31 pm
After 6 days at sea, you hear a crew member in the crows nest yell, "Land Ho!" Everyone looks in the direction he points and you think you see a small speck in the distance. You assume it must be land, based on the man in the crows nest having a spyglass and thus can see the far away speck later. You imagine it will still take a few more hours to actually approach the island, though.

Before anyone can celebrate, the man in the crows nest yells, "Captain! Something in the water!" As everyone continues to look in the direction of the speck presumed to be your destination, it appears that a set of red fins sticking out of the water is coming towards the boat. The fins fold, merging with the water, and disappear. The air is tense as the crew hopes it was just some exotic sharks. The tension is broken by the boat shaking and most of the heroes who are not used to boats likely falling down or at least dropping to one knee. After quickly getting back up, the captain yells, "It must be the dragon! Everyone, to your stations! Crew, we are no match for the beast. I will man the helm. Everyone else, focus on your own safety, and help keep the ship afloat! Heroes, do what you can to take care of the beast! It is bound to come up soon. I pray it doesn't just destroy the bottom of the boat."
OOC:
You all have 1 round to do something. I will roll initiative, but combat is not quite started yet. Please post where on the ship's deck you want to be. I will make another post below this one with the ship's layout and initiative. Declare what you do with any action or bonus action and where on the ship you are, then combat will start.

If you have a magic item that gives you advantage on initiative, roll another initiative check as part of your post and if it is higher I will replace it. Otherwise I will use what I rolled for you.

"I was joking, ocean mother," Omeros sighed, remembering the ways in which lesser comments had led to the greatest heroes' falls.

"Come, Invictus!" the satyr intoned while he grasped at seemingly empty air, and his fist closed on the beautiful hilt of a bladeless sword.

"Dawn!"

Once the brilliant blade of pure light flashed from the Invictus hilt, Omeros readied his shield then rushed to port!

Kelnes runs to the starboard section of the ship and uses his rope to tie himself into a position near the edge of the boat. Trident and Shield in hand once finished.

He instructs Argos to go below decks for now

As you all prepare, @annex Omeros and Kadmos are the first to leap into action. Everyone that is within 10 feet of the edge of the boat sees the water ripple as if something long and thin is swimming 10 feet under the surface of the water. The riple suddenly splits, one going to the port (north) and one going to starboard (south). Kelnes and Omeros are able to see what looks to be a serpent swimming by the boat, ready to emerge but not until after Omeros and Kadmos leap into action.

just as an FYI, if anyone feels they can't do anything some round, you can use your action to roll. A DC 17 History or Nature check to see if you know something about this enemy. History would provide stories of what the monster has done to other ships, and nature would be about it's biology and possibly abilities

Omeros wondered whether these creatures could possibly be a boon, albeit with an alarming entrance, but he erred on the side of caution.
The satyr closed his eyes for an instant then reopened them to reveal a sparkling starry night within each orb. Invictus shimmered with starshine as Omeros prepared to thricely channel his god's forceful wrath at the salty wurm!

Sea Serpent

The serpent on the starboard (south) sticks its large head out of the water high up enough that it towers 15 feet over the ship where everyone stands. Omeros, being on the port (north) side of the ship, does not release his reaction just yet, as his focus was on the other serpent that is still hiding within the water. As the starboard serpent sees everyone, it looks at those on board. It opens its large maw and exhales a thick gust of frigid air that would chill any normal man to the bone on Kelnes, Isaiah, and Kadmos. With its lungs empty from exhaling, it takes a deep breath and looks to see what the others do.
OOC:
Summary:
Kadmos: 20 cold damage, and did not lose concentration on heroism
Isaiah: 20 cold damage
Kelnes: 41 cold damage

@MaJunior Small note: I realized you held booming blade. Holding a spell, even a cantrip, requires concentration. Fow now, i'll say you held a normal weapon attack, but in the future if you hold a cantrip while concentrating on a spell the concentration is broken.

Okay, a lot happened on just that one turn. Some notes. I see you rolled with advantage. In order to keep things moving, I will assume you took the bonus action to hide first, as technically with a 16 it would have spotted you. I probably should have told you that, my bad. As such you are not hidden right now, as to keep the advantage you would have had to attempt another hide and then attacked. Also, the poison isn't rolled a second time. Crits only roll double damage for the damage dice of the attack. Because the enemy makes a save, the wyvern poison is a result of a hit, not a part of the attack's damage dice. You still get to roll double sneak attack dice, though, so good there. Also, it passed the save vs the poison, so the total damage you dealt was 65. Oh, and we can say it got hit in the eye, but there is not called shots or such system here so it's not blinded or such. It is pissed, though. I'm going to assume you shot at serpent 2, since you didn't declare which one and there are 2 so I need to know which one.

Sea Serpent

The port (north) serpent (1), like the first, comes out of the water and surveys the boat. Omeron, waiting for this, blasts the serpent with all three beams. Angered, the serpent looks and sees that it has just enough space to breath a blast of friggid breath on four of the heroes. It does so, and then inhales to regain its breath.

Chironides, as this happens, leaps off the boat to lance the starboard serpent, striking once and missing just barely with the second.
OOC:

Omeron: 36 cold damage
Aurora: 36 cold damage

Isaiah: 9 cold damage (18 from success, halved by absorb elements)

Good point about not critting on poison damage. It did in the PC game Solasta: Crown of the Magister that was properly the last time I played with poisons and the reason for my assumption.

Uncanny dodge sadly does not apply. It's one of those things that doesn't make sense until you accept that "attack" doesn't just mean "an attempt to harm someone" but instead "something with an attack roll". If the serpent bit you, that would trigger uncanny dodge, but not a breath weapon, as there is no attack roll involved. It's semantics, but it is how the designers wrote it. I am a bit of a rules enthusiast.

The word of the gods slipped from the satyr's lips as the frost washed over him, and the resultant hellfire which burst from within him in turn washed over the sea serpent.

OOC:
Which serpent? where are you standing? and how are you going to strike at a creature that is 15 feet from the boat? D&D 5e can be a bit weird about how a monster can have a 10+ foot reach with an appendage (claw, bite, tail, etc.) but as far as I can tell the creature never gets closer and thus never gets into reach. If you don't have some way to close the gap, I can let you hold your action, using the first attack you made, and when the serpent attacks i'll have one of the attacks be against you. As such, I'll rule that part of it got close enough to swipe at, despite the space it occupied being too far away. If you have an idea to do something about the distance, i'll hear you out.

After Aurora took her turn, Serpent 2 would have taken a legendary action to attack Aurora, but she was out of reach so it tried to bite Kelnes.
After Serpent 1 went, Serpent 2 would have used its tail against Isaiah.
After Kelnes, Isaiah, and Chironides went, Serpent 1 would have, with only 1 target in reach, Serpent 1 would have tried to bite Omeros and then slap him with his tail.

Tail attacks knock people 20 feet away, but for now I will ignore that and only impose that on future tail attacks. With serpent 2 taking its turn, it now has legendary actions again, though most likely it will spend all of them on Kelnes as it now has him held underwater and is thus out of range of everyone else.

Sea Serpent

Aurora's arrow seems wobbly at first but flies true in the end. The serpent reals and looks at the boat, testing its throat. Feeling the chill come back, it knows it can breathe once more on those on the boat. However, it takes a look at Omeros, the one who has harmed it the most, and decides instead to attempt to pull him off the boat with his tail. With this success, it then moves away from the boat and begins to dive underwater, Omeros in tow. As soon as they get underwater, the serpent attempts to bite his newly restrained snack.

As this occurs, the portside (south) serpent attempts to bite Kelnes with a legendary action.
OOC:
Summary:
Omeros is now restrained and taken underwater, taking 50 damage (21 bludgeoning and 28 piercing and 1 cold) in the process.
Kelness takes 23 damage (24, but 2 of it is cold so 23)

Kelnes & Isaiah & Chironides are now up. The serpents are about 30 feet underwater and the boat is about 20 feet high, so anyone standing at the edge is about 50-60 feet from them. As such, they have resistance to fire right now and any ranged weapon attack probably has disadvantage. if you feel you have no actions, you can start loading a cannon so it will take less to fire when they come back up.

For those restrained by the serpent, despite the fact you are likely out of reach you may still attack the serpent at disadvantage, as while RAW it is out of reach unless you have a 15 foot reach, part of its body is around you and that would be in reach. Just remember to replace 1d20 with 2d20L1
As you are fighting, the captain yells, "There is a crate by the mast with potions of water breathing. It won't help you swim, but if you are brave enough to go in after your friends I suggest drinking one first. I didn't mention it as we normally save them for underwater exploration for treasure."

With a combination of slams and stabs from the water elemental and Kelnes, the portside (south) serpent releases a gush of blood as the trident is yanked from its body. It releases Kelnes and begins sinking to the bottom of the ocean, leaving a trail of blood in the water as it does.

The other serpent with Omeros takes a legendary action to attempt to bite its presumed meal.

The sea serpent considers going back above for someone else to drag overboard, but sees Kelnes swimming towards him. Seeing that it would be safe from those up top by being under the boat, the serpent lets go of Omeros and swims over to Kelnes, attempting to constrict and bite him.
OOC:
Summary:
Kelnes is restrained and takes 25 bludgeoning damage from constrict, 26 piercing damage from the bite, and 12 cold damage from the bite (halved to 6 from resistance)

Kelnes kills the serpent with the first attack of his turn, due to the damage of the reaction attack. No smites needed
Kelnes skewers the serpent as it tries to construct tighter. As he pulls it out, the wound is revealed to be so deep that the serpent screams (as best it can underwater), lets go of Kelnes, and begin sinking to the ocean floor.
OOC:
I am going to assume a few people's actions as I think they are reasonable.
Kelnes them swims to Omeros, throws him over his shoulder, and swims back to the boat, where heroes and crew help pull both back aboard. There is enough time for someone to heal him before he dies.
OOC:
What will be used to heal him? Lay on hands? Spell? Potion? Go ahead and roleplay how everyone reacts to the battle being over. You all get a heroic rest, so you can heal with as many hit dice as you want, and any ability that comes back on a short rest you get 1 use of it back.
May 20, 2024 7:47 pm
Kelnes swims down to Omeros and catches him as he is sinking.

Not today friend. Kelnes declares as he uses Lay on hands to heal back 2hp to Omeros on their way up to the ship
May 20, 2024 7:50 pm
OOC:
Do I still take that damage if I get him on the reaction attack?
May 20, 2024 7:56 pm
OOC:
Yes, it had 29 hp left, your 17 damage wasn't enough to kill you, so it still did the rest of its turn, but the 14 damage from your first attack was enough to kill it. As such, it still did its whole turn, but you killed it at the start of yours.
May 20, 2024 8:02 pm
OOC:
gotcha, thanks for the confirmation.
After Kelnes arrives on board he stands up, and puts his trident across his back. Irois blesses us with victory today, but I doubt that will be the end of the dangers we will face.. With a whistle he calls for Argos to come to him and gives him a pat on the head. The routine after battle is there. Thanks Irois, scratch Argos. Kelnes then walks to someplace quiet and takes a much needed rest.

As you all continue to collect yourselves, you notice a few men from the crew on the ground, frozen and not moving. It doesn't take any medical examination to tell that these sailors died instantly from the cold breath of the serpents. The captain tells one of the crew to take over the helm and he walks down to you all as you continue healing each other. "Every life lost is a tragedy, but they knew what was possible by coming aboard this trip. As for the next leg of our trip, we will need all of your help. In about an hour, we will get close enough to the coast that we will have to make it past the rocky coast to find somewhere to drop you off. The coast is too deadly for small boats. They will be torn apart. Our only hope is to take a very specific path to get the main boat through. Be ready."

Were these the dark waters of Tartyx dragging him down to the Underworld? Was that Erebos awaiting his soul? Were those two other souls descending to the dead?

No! Light... and air!

"Keranos!" Omeros gasped as he regained consciousness.

He got unsteadily to his hooves and inspected the ocean around the ship.

"We smote the overgrown eels! Keranos be praised! And thank you, Isaiah! Thank all of you for bringing me back!"

His tone shifted once he saw the two dead sailors.

"Grant them rest, Erebos. Their journey ends so that ours may continue. We will do whatever we can to secure the ship, captain."

The captain strokes his beard. "It is possible you might be able to fly everyone over the rocky coast, but I doubt you would do so unseen. The rocks would hide our approach, meaning it might be possible for you all to approach the monster's lair unseen, though only might. If you fly in, I doubt you would make it to the beach before you are spotted and attacked mid air over the rocks. If we take the boat, the rocks might damage the boat but we could hide our approach."

May 21, 2024 8:13 pm
OOC:
I'll go ahead and level set with you all. The plan was to have the boat have to navigate through sharp rocks to get close to the beach and let you guys off, which would be handled by a skill challenge. If you guys want to circumvent it, I should probably be ok with it, as players are supposed to be empowered. Just keep these things in mind:

If the boat is left behind, you will have to get back to it somehow.

If you go by air there is an extremely high chance of being spotted as there is a guardian that would notice you.

The water is deep enough for the boat, but sharp rocks can damage the hull. A small boat can navigate failure easily, but is still not safe.

Essentially, I see you have these options:
1. Take to the skies but risk getting attacked mid air over the water.
2. Take a small boat, which would be stealthy but easier for the rocks to break.
3. Take the ship and crew, but you will need to help it get through safely.

As a player I prefer to use my brain to solve 5e challenges in a safe way. Only hope for dice not to screw mew up I fail to come up with safe solution.
But if that's only me I'm cool with following what other players want.

My other idea was:
1. Turn into giant Octopus
2. Everyone but Kelnes dring water breath potions captain suggested during fight
3. Tie a rope to the Octopus and swim under the water ( if it is deep enough to large ship, it should be safe for a creature with native swim speed)
4. Large creature with str 17 should be albe to drag 3-4 PCs under the water as he swims, shouldn't it...

May 22, 2024 11:52 am
OOC:
ok, I see 3 voted for small boat, but there was an "other". Just to be safe, this will be the last poll before the story progresses

Method of approach?

Take a small boat. Pro: those in boat are able to help. Con: if boat hits rock it will break
Use a wild shape octopus, water breathing potions, and rope to drag everyone to shore. Pro: very stealthy. Con: those without swim speed will not be much help if something happens
May 22, 2024 1:15 pm
Chiron suggests:

The Octopus (Isaiah) and Triton (Kelnes) underwater and pulling on ropes tied to the small boat would the perfect way to precisely guide the boat through any underwater threats such as rocks... they would be able to detect dangerous shallows and rocks ahed of time and then move the boat as needed to avoid damage.
May 22, 2024 1:42 pm
Boat is easy to spot from the ground. If we all go underwater we can approach unseen.
OOC:
That's how they cover ops in all the movies, isn't it?
Sorry, but I am not wasting my wildshape resource (which I can't get back in this custom 5e game ) just to work as mule.
More over I disagree a creature who can breath underwater but don't have natural swimming speed is worthless underwater. I would say even more - if something happens while we are in boat and we don't have water breathing potions on us - that's when we are screwed
If we don't want get wet I will stay with you in the boat. My ayes are better that Octopus

Just a heads up, runekyndig said he wanted to drop from the one-shot, so there are 5 PCs to account for, not 6. Since I originally planned this for 4 and invited 6, I don't plan to look for a replacement.

Since there are 5 active players, I'll progress the story when I see 5 votes or at the end of today, whichever I see first. If only 4 vote and it is a tie, i'll wait for the 5th vote.

I see 3 voted for underwater and that is the majority
The captain listens to your plan. "Fair enough. I will lose less men if we don't come with, though I fear for the safety of the princess. You will need to get her back to the boat. Let us see how many potions we have. We don't normally keep a ton, as the hour they last is normally plenty and no 2 or 3 men need to go at a time. Unless you come up with another way to get her back here, the princess will need a potion too on your way back, let alone another round for each of you."
OOC:
I am going to roll for how many they have. You will need 4 minimum for the 4 of you that aren't a triton. I will roll 1d10+3. If the d10 rolls a 6, there will be 9, enough for 4 now and 5 later. Anything less and you will have an issue to deal with at the end.

8, so one of you will need to figure out, on the way out or back, how to survive underwater for extended periods of time or else the princess won't have one

Rolls

Wasn't the plan to have a skiff and a boat being pulled by those with a swim speed (plus rowing). With the two of us really doing what we can to really control the small boats movements on the rocks?

That way, we have a boat to get back. It just may be smaller and could break. So the water breathing potions would be more contingency
May 22, 2024 6:07 pm
OOC:
the original poll has 3 votes for being underwater. The boat option got only 1 vote. I was hoping that would help since discussions like this can be hard over PbP due to speed. If the plan has changed since what I put in the poll please state your plan and have at least 2 other people confirm that plan

I really regret my attempt to come up with a smart plan. Let me try to recap my plan:
1. Isaiah waste his one of only 2 wildshape options to turn into swimming creature
2. Chironides, Omeros, Kadmos (and a Steed as much as I understand) drink water breathing potion to allow everyone reach coast underwater
2.A I was planning to cast Pass without trace just before transforming into octopus
3. When the battle is over we can get back to ship without a need to go underwater as we don't need to hide any more
May 22, 2024 7:04 pm
OOC:
Based on your ideas, I say at this point there isn't really going to be any issue getting to the beach. I think just saying "You take the small boat and make it to shore" and skip to the next challenge would be better than the conversation that is getting people confused. Unless someone disagrees, I'll just do that. After all, the gorgon queen's lair isn't on the beach. You have to find it while avoiding the guardians, so dealing with that is probably going to be more interesting than this, which you all seem to have solved for the most part.

As you all make it to shore, you notice something overhead. It is unmistakably a blue dragon, likely an adult by the size. You all manage to evade its notice, but it is clearly on the lookout. After it flies away, you realize that the lair is nowhere to be seen. The island isn't too big, but is might take a decent portion of the day to find. All the while, if you wish to save resources, you may want to avoid being seen by the dragon or anyone else who may be here also on patrol.
OOC:
Here is what I'm imagining. Unless you find some way to just know where the lair is, which would have to be magic, this will be a skill challenge. For those unfamiliar, here are the rules:
[ +- ] Skill Challenge Rules
Goal: Find Hythonia's lair without getting caught by the dragon or Hythonia's worshipers.
Skill DC: 18
Ability DC: 13
Success:
- 0 failure: Party finds lair undetected and quicky
- 1 failure: Party finds lair, but 50% chance was spotted on the way in
- 2 failure: Party finds lair, but was spotted on the way in and it is getting dark
Failure: Party is spotted by the dragon and worshipers, but will find the lair afterwards.

I will use the Current Battle Information thread to keep track of successes and failures.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Kelnes takes a quick sip of the salt water and then stands tall, with a pat on Argos' head. Tell we return...Let us be stealthy but quick
OOC:
I am just assuming Kelnes being an undersea based race doesn't suffer consequences for drinking salt water.
May 22, 2024 8:10 pm
OOC:
If you all would rather have the fight, you can make a lot of noise, get spotted, have a fight, and then make the people you defeat tell you where it is, effectively taking the fail option automatically but waisting less time
May 22, 2024 8:17 pm
Kadmos will take a few moments to shift his weight as he stands in the sand, letting it crunch beneath his boots. As the dragon soars overhead he stops moving and watches it go.

"Time to get serious. For the glory of Iroas."

As they group gets ready to move, Kadmos starts noticing pathways that are challenging, but that keep them largely blocked from view -- at least from above. Not one to shy away from a challenge, he begins traversing the island: climbing inclines and jumping depressions in the ground.
OOC:
My plan is to use Athletics to stay off the beaten path, using natural terrain as concealment from the watchful eyes of the Dragon (and hopefully others).

What does Chironides know about Blue Dragons and their preferred lairs....

Rolls

Nature - (1d20+8)

(2) + 8 = 10

May 22, 2024 9:33 pm
It is fairly common knowledge that blue dragons (in Theros setting) prefer coasts and islands, like this, and are very bestial, though still intelligent. They breath lightning. As for as uncommon knowledge, Chironides does not appear to have any that come to mind.
May 22, 2024 10:02 pm
Kelnes works to get into advantages positions when the group stops. Climbing trees and climbing rock surfaces to get better vantage points for scouting.
OOC:
Using his acrobatics to get into these places....

Rolls

Acrobatics - (1d20+5)

(3) + 5 = 8

May 22, 2024 10:37 pm
OOC:
Climbing is athletics not acrobatics but we can imagine you had rolled perception instead or something similar
Assuming the nature check from Chironides was part of the skill challenge, that is 1 success and 2 failures. You had a moment of almost being spotted, and then it seems you officially got spotted but you lost your pursuers. The next run it won't be so easy to evade.
OOC:
Isaiah and Omeros both need to attempt something. Nature, Athletics, and maybe Perception have been used. You might use History to recall how others have evaded such dragons, or survival to navigate the island, or Stealth to observe some of the worshipers of Hythonia on the island without them seeing you
May 23, 2024 5:18 am

A moment before stepping on the ground Isaiah pronounce magic words to hide party from unwanted attention.
Druid of Stars is excited to use his magic and skill to see the island and observe their pursuers

Druid is carefully analyzing tracks and other evidence of animal recent behavior on the island to find any patters: animals should change their behavior closer to the dragon's nest or even totally avoid it.

@annex one of the rules is no 2 players can use the same skill in the same round. Athletics was the first skill used. I'll let you keep the roll, but it has to be a different skill.
May 23, 2024 12:10 pm
The party surveys the local area and uses local wild life to narrow down their search. It seems the dragon had spotted them, but they have been lucky in evading it so far. As group continues, they continue to come across life-like statues of various men and women who turned to stone mid battle, none matching the princess's description.
OOC:
You may all go again. 3 success. 2 failure. Reminder: you can't use the skill you used in round 1 again, and you can't use a skill if a different player THIS ROUND has already used it, but if it was used by someone else last round it is fair game.

May 23, 2024 1:44 pm
As the group tries to take a break to eat and catch their breath from hours of walking, they end up taking too long. A group of men with snakes for heads and snake bodies instead of their legs approach from two different sides. "There they are," One of them hisses. "Hythonia does not wish to have visitors at this time, let alone armed ones." It then takes a small gem in its hands and tosses it up in the air. As it gets higher, it gets brighter and brighter until it can be seen even in the later afternoon sun. This is likely a signal to tell the dragon where you are. Luckily, the dragon does not appear to be here yet. Perhaps you have a round or two before it would arrive. Until then, these snake men seem hostile.
OOC:
You are in a forest area, probably half a mile from the coast. I am assuming you had your weapons stowed, but you might have had something like a shield out if you didn't think it would be too difficult to hold for 3+ hours.

@Basil Did you use booming blade? I see two warhammer attacks. You only get 1 attack when you cast the cantrip. I believe the hooves are your bonus action, and you aren't hasted so not sure where the 2nd attack came from. I'm also not sure about the movement. To use the hooves, you need to move 30 feet first. I estimate with 70 speed that you could get to M3, not P3. I'll resolve your turn once I hear from you.

Since Kadmos is ganging up on the same enemy, I'll have to wait to resolve his turn until after this too, as I don't want to make him waste attacks on an already dead enemy.

The snake men hiss. "For the queen!" Those not engaged with Kadmos lunge at the rest of the group, though not at Chironides due to his distance. Each attempts to construct someone with their lower halves before following up with a bite.
OOC:
Summary:
If anything alters the values below, please tell me. For example, if you casted the shield spell or had a resistance.

Kadmos: 5 piercing and 9 poison damage
Isaiah: Restrained and 24 bludgeoning damage
Omeros: Restrained and 7 bludgeoning damage and 7 piercing and 8 poison damage
Kelnes: Restrained and 10 bludgeoning damage 4 piercing and 7 poison damage
Argos: Restrained and 12 bludgeoning damage and 7 piercing and 6 poison damage

I will update the combat log with who is restrained by who so we know who is freed when an enemy does.if 2 enemies hit the same person with construct, I will say only the first constricted and the second did more of a tail slap

Isaiah and Kelnes may go. Remember restrained means 0 speed and disadvantage on attacks. Escape DC is 13 and takes an action to attempt. You are still able to cast spells, though. Nothing in the rules affect that.

Chiron runs up and smacks one of the snake men, while omeros teleports out of his grapple and move a good distance away. Kadmos strikes down one of the snake men and continues on the other.

One of the snake men hisses as he sees two of his allies dead on the ground. "These people are dangerousssss! Protect our Queen! The dragon will appear ssssoon!" With that, they snake men continue their assault.

1-1, who is still grappling Isaiah, goes in for two bites on his squeezed victim.
1-2, seeing the elemental and familiar enough with what to do when such things suddenly appear, gangs up on the druid that 1-1 has tied up with its own flurry of bites, hoping to make the elemental go away.
1-3 attempts to constrict Kadmos. Failing to do so, he attempts a bite anyways.
2-1 sees an opportunity to run up to the horse man and takes it, attempting to constrict him. Seeing how good Chirondies armor is, he decies to attempt to grab the horse man the old fashion way. (Yes, in case anyone would have noticed, I know the rule is you can replace a grapple as part of the attack action, and multiattack is not the attack action, but I generally let monsters replace at least 1 of their multiattack with the shove or grapple action like a PC can.). Even that fails, however.
2-2 and 2-3 gang up on the triton warrior, with no real other target to go for. 2-2 attempts to constrict and succeeds. 2-2 follows up with a bite, followed by 2-3 seeing that Kelnes is constricted and following up with 2 bites of their own.
OOC:
Summary: (see below for who rolled what against who, as well as damage type breakdown)
Isaiah: 50 damage, still grappled and restrained from before, and I need 4 DC 10 Constitution saving throws for concentration.
Kelnes: 30 damage and is now grappled (escape DC 13), and restrained while grappled, by 2-2

@valdattaMadun Kelnes and @GreyWord Isaiah are now up. if Kadmos wants to go ahead and do his turn, he can do so if desired.

Kelnes slashes twice into the snake man holding him, killing him with the second blow but without need of the second smite. he then uses the pommel to bash the other snake mane, using his second smite on that blow which kills that snake man. (Note: 2-3 died and was Omeros's cursed target, if that matters for anything)

Isaiah changes his constellation and heals Kelnes for 13 hp and himself for 21 hp. His elemental looks over to obey his master, only to find that Kelnes had protected himself. it then decides to keep the "protect" command, but do so by protecting his master instead. It moves past Kelnes and a little up so that it can safely get to the snake man constricting its master and proceeds to strike it, dealing good damage but not giving the snake man any lasting injuries.

Kadmos slashes the snake man three good times, spilling the man's blood but not causing him to fall down. The snake man gives a pained but angry look, but smiles a bit as he sees the dragon come in.

Blue Dragon

The dragon flies overhead and surveys the battlefield. It looks for the most people it can catch in its breath as it flies over the battlefield.
OOC:
The way I tend to handle breath weapons for dragons is that they can be used in special ways while they fly. Cones can become radiuses with a diameter based on the cone's size, limited by the height it can achieve if there is a limit. Lines can be held as it flies past, thus the line might be longer because the line is continuous going as it flies overhead, with the length being how close it has to be to the ground.
It sees the best way to get 3 people in the line is to fly from the south-west and go over Chironides, then through Kel and Isaiah. Any other pattern would yield only 2 people. It gets in position and breathes lighting straight on the ground, electrifying everything directly below it as it passes over and flies off, ending its turn nearby but high off the ground (in this case, 40 feet off the ground).
OOC:
Looks like all 4 take 73 damage, though I suspect Isaiah will use absorb elements. No one is a rogue or monk, so I don't think anyone has evasion. I need Isaiah to make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, assuming the absorb elements that reduces his damage to 36, half of which is 18. Chironides also casted absorb elements, taking 36 instead of 73.

Upon the death of his cursed victim, Omeros inhaled its last breath to heal some of his wounds. The dragon's arrival was as sudden and destructive as he'd feared but Omeros focused on felling snake-men to free his friends for the draconic battle.

@Basil For the record, I just realized you assumed flanking was available. I have a house rule at my table, but technically flanking is an optional rule and can't be assumed to be in affect. For all, flanking in my games gives a flat +2, not advantage, but I never said flanking was active. It is available as of now, but do not give yourself advantage. Give yourself a +2. I prefer that rule so that features that provide advantage are still worth investing in.
Chironides hits and shifts the snake man, using the new opening to help Kadmos some.
Omeros blasts one of the snake men dead, finishing with the one grabbing Isaiah. His first shot hits, however his second shot vears off as he fears hitting Isaiah.
OOC:
Isaiah is giving 1-1 half cover from Omeros, so the 13 missed. I didn't see any text about moving.

Worshiper of Hythonia

The three remaining snake men look at the dragon with delight, though this delight is cut short as they realize how many of their brothers in worship have been slain. The two fighting Isaiah and Kelnes consider fleeing, but know such actions would result in their death anyways at the hands of those near them and thus decide to fight to the death. The one Chironides does, however, consider fleeing. It almost works up the courage to stay, but ultimately gives in.
OOC:
Summary:

1-2 deals 13 bludgeoning damage (before resistance) to Kelnes and restrains him as he is grappled

The dragon inhales, checking it's breath. No sparks appear, so the dragon makes plans without that option available. It's presence radiates from it, as each member of the party is forced to steal their will before it swoops down. It lands near Kadmos and Kelnes, people who it can see are shaking from its presence. It uses its long neck to try and bite Kelnes and uses both of its claws to slash at Kadmos.
OOC:
Ok, SUPER IMPORTANT: The dragon has legendary actions. Chironides and Omeros are up next. Whichever posts first goes first unless they ask to be second. Whoever goes first, the dragon is still on the ground occupying D6 to F8.
The first legendary action it is going to take is to use its tail against Kadmos. The second legendary action it is going to take is to use Wing attack against Kadmos, Kelnes, and the elemental and then move to where you see it on the map now. Kadmos and the elemental may make opportunity attacks as it moves, though if they are frightened or prone then the attack is at disadvantage. I am rolling things now, but that is when they will actually occur. if somehow someone does something that ruins those actions, I will make a new post.

SUMMARY:

Seeing the dragon, the snake man is conflicted. He is near death and knows these warriors can cut him down easily. However, he decides to attempt to flee. Most likely, he assumes the dragon will be a big enough distraction that finishing him off will be seen as a waste of time. He disengages and starts to flee. If given the chance next round, he will escape.

As for the one that had already started fleeing earlier, the combination of chaos and the tree line makes it so he is effectively out of combat.

Both Kelnes and the Elemental are still frightened. Reminder: You have disadvantage on attack rolls "while the source of its fear is within line of sight." As such, even if you are attacking something that is facing away from the dragon, if the dragon is able to be seen by you if you looked in its direction, you still have disadvantage regardless of who you attack.

Blue Dragon

The dragon takes the small shots at it and inhales as it checks its breath while looking at who it is dealing with again. It seems frustrated that it can't feel the tingle of static in its throat yet. It looks around for a good set of targets. It may be a brute, but it is one that has lived hundreds of years, and survival requires some level of battle understanding.

It sees that the party is fairly spread out. It sees Chironides, who is well armored and barely a pest, and passes. It sees Kadmos who had just thrown the surprisingly potent fire bolt and considers him. Kelnes had stabbed it pretty good and went down, but seems to be back up again. The thought makes it scowl. It sees the elemental and knows such creatures tend not to attack the snake men here. It hears the verbal commands from Isaiah and realizes what is happening. Isaiah might be a good target. It sees Omeros, but is unimpressed and sees to think him too weak to consider at this time.

Ultimately, the dragon decides to go for those that are a combination of annoying and easy prey. This puts Kadmos, Kelnes, and Isaiah at the head of the chopping block. The dragon weighs his options and decides revenge and removing the elemental would be the best to prioritize, especially since he deduces that the trton that stabbed him is only standing because of the man commanding the elemental.

The dragon lands within reach of both kelnes and Isaiah. He tries to bite Kelnes, succeeding and seeing Kelnes go down. With a smirk, he then went on to slash at Isaiah.
OOC:
Summary:
Dragon lands by Kelnes and Isaiah
Kelnes takes 19 piercing and 3 lightning damage
Isaiah takes 14 slashing and 12 slashing damage

Isaiah would need to make 2 DC 10 Con saves, but can't roll low enough to fail so he is good.

I won't roll it now, as that probably made things too confusing last time, but the dragon will use its tail on Isaiah after the next player acts and then fly off after the player after that, using wing attack. It sees enough people with swords that it knows not to stay on the ground long.

Rerolling the bite against kelnes

Ok, since the bite missed, Kelnes had pissed off the dragon enough with those divine smites that he would have tried to claw Kelnes instead of Isaiah. Rerolling the first claw against Isaiah to see if with disadvantage it would have hit Kelnes. Thus, Isaiah did not take the 14 damage. If this still misses, the dragon will still do the 2nd claw against Isaiah.

New results, Isaiah did not take the 14 slashing damage from the first claw. Instead, Kelnes took it, as the original roll would have been high enough to hit Kelnes so since the reroll hit then with disadvantage it would have still hit.

Kelnes is now the only one still frightened of the dragon
The dragon doesn't feel the tingle in its throat and looks around. It notes the structure erected from stone and the two warriors below it. It recalls being blasted by Omeros, who is far away, and sees he is not blinked away. "This pest looks like a good target." With its 80 ft. flying speed, the dragon swoops over and lands 5 feet from Omeros and uses all of its attacks on him. It then prepares to slap him with its tail and fly off like before, but those won't happen just yet. The dragon seems extremely frustrated. It seems, Omeros's blinking, is a bit buggy. It seems to blink him out just before each hit, instead of all at once for a few seconds.
OOC:
Omeros got extremely lucky that the dragon couldn't roll above a 4, hahaha. it shouldn't have any reason to have advantage.

Ok, everyone can go. Since there is only really 1 enemy, it will be side initiative from here on out.

Blue Dragon

The dragon takes both of the slashes and then scowls in anger before using its legendary action to use Wing Attack early and go straight into the air, with no target to attack with its tail.

The dragon falls to the ground from Isaiah's attacks. The luminous arrow piercing its scales and sticking in as its fails to keep aloft. As it crashes down, you catch your breath. As you do, you find that some of the snake men have stones on them. It seems these stones are like a compass, with a small light leading to somewhere. You find it safe to assume the "somewhere" is Hythonia's lair.
OOC:
Go ahead each of you and make a post as to what your character says and does after seeing the dragon die and rolling any hit dice. Reminder: any ability you have where you get back one or more charges from a short rest, you automatically got back 1 charge. If anyone wants to get claws and such off of the dragon, you can, but as this is a one shot there won't be time to make anything useful from what you can get.

Kelnes comes out from around the wall of stone and leans down at the remains of the snake men and picks up one of the stones. He then looks up at the sky and stares a moment. The fight was good but hard....time for the next bit of glory to take.
OOC:
I think I need to pull up with all of my Hit Dice unfortunately

probably add the remaining Lay on Hands as needed maybe some if any additional healing is shared.

edit: full Lay on Hands and the Hit Dice bring me up to 72/99 HP. Wouldn't say no to some additional healing

Chironides gives Kelnes a hearty pat on the back. With an immortal on our side there is no chance of failure!

Something totally broken on this island. How could anything make such an intelligent creature to fight to it's death with people who don't even endanger it or it's lair?
Isaiah is sad about killing a dragon, but then again we did it in a self defense.
OOC:
@valdattaMadun have you spend all 3 of your healing potions DM granted everyone (20 healing when consumed) ? I can share one of mine. I'm also using all of my dice.

Some worshipers escaped Hythonia will be aware. A wise man would turn back have a good rest and return after week. But we are more than just a man, aren't we?

Rolls

Nerfed rest healing - (10d8+40)

(5125544482) + 40 = 80

Omeros stepped back into the mortal plane with a smile on his face.

"Far more than men, Isaiah. Three evil dragons and a nest of snake-men. Not a bad start to the day. Keranos be praised!"

With a whispered thanks to his god, Omeros channeled divine strength to heal most of his wounds.
OOC:
3 hit dice spent to get my HP total up to 78/81.
