When it proves difficult to remove the black attire from a dead body, Ishi decides against wearing them. He also does not want to be mistaken for a drow (and the clothes are covered with blood which doesn't male a good first impression) . He mounts the gray horse he considers his own and says"I think I could find my way back to the inn (wanderer feature) and bring back a lot of our stuff, Or is there anything else Aunty thinks I should do?

Elowin will open cages but not further help the captured. She wants to return to the inn and get their stuff, so they can get out of sight/townJul 4, 2024 1:15 pm
OOC:
Adran will want to release the elder tiefling in particular, to apologize that he was caught up in this and then explaining that because he is escaping he may need a place to hide or his family may need to get out of the city. If he is injured, Adran will cast Cure Wounds (twice if needed) and help him grab anything he may need -- boots, a cloak, a cane/staff, etc.
Essentially trying to make sure he's alright, and can function on his own. Beyond that, Adran intends to stay with Findal.

Elysia will help Adran free the old tiefling with apologies for him as well. She’ll also take a crossbow and the dark cloak instead of the attire, but she’ll see Adran’s eyes on it and give him the crossbow and bolts saying it’s a "thanks" for helping with the old man. Any gear the rest of the team don’t loot, she’ll snatch it up as well before leading those who want to sneak back to the inn. Naturally, she’ll tell Zin where the hideout to meet up at is so they can go separate ways. Although considering she has the map in her backpack, I think Elysia would’ve had that with her at breakfast, not wanting it out of sight.

Elysia and Eozindra both offer hand crossbows to Adran. Ishi calms the horses (still a little unnerved by Morik the bear) and mounts up. While Eozindra gives some "suggestions" to Elysia, Adran and Elowin enter the jail. There are two more dead guards inside and several cells. Elysia enters while Eozindra mounts a horse. Elowin looks on the corpses for keys while Adran inspects the lock and starts to pull out his tools to disassemble it. But by then Elysia has picked the lock, releasing the tiefling and several older gnomes. They are upset - freaked out from detention, questioning, the sudden darkness, and the sight of their jailers, dead - but physically unharmed. Adran removes the spear point from a shaft and gives it to the tiefling, who accepts it with poor grace. Elysia retrieves a couple of daggers and then hops in the saddle.
Eozindra leads Morik away to the bolt hole. Elysia and Ishi lead Elowin, Findal, and Adran back to the inn. As the two groups arrive at their destinations, they hear horns sounding in the distance: alarums blown when the Duke or his men arrived at the Castle Dungeons. Elysia sneaks into the inn first; they were fast enough, and more guards have not arrived. The inn’s staff have apparently fled, and thieves picking over the bodies of the guards outside scatter at the approach of mounted people (the heroes). No one has yet ventured inside; the party is able to retrieve their items. Findal has a LOT of stuff compared to the rest of you: a trunk full of books, a trunk full of sundries, and a trunk of clothes and valuables. Mostly he’s excited to be reunited with Peppercorn. He digs through the chests to pull out two books, a large pouch, and a small rucksack. "It pains me to leave the rest, but if I must…"
They leave just ahead of the arrival of a troop of guards, rounding the corner just as what sounds like at least a dozen mounted warriors arrive. Elysia leads the party along a winding route, and eventually has everyone dismount and release the horses as there is nothing the could work as a stable or could conceal all these horses caparisoned in the Duke’s colors. After a few more blocks, Elysia leads them down into an abandoned basement. Eozindra and Morik await them there.
As Findal examines the map and the guards throughout the city are put on high alert, the PCs rest and take stock of the situation. They’re safe here, for the time being. As they consider what to do next, each PC gains inspiration, the benefit of a long rest, and advances to level three!

Oh, Sir Bear, pardon me, if you are a true representative of the Bear totem and not just a druid. I be needing your assistance in creating a bear totem amulet which will further my spiritual growth. If you would allow me to collect some of your fur and it does not change or disappear when you change to another form, then i would be in debt to you, and for example, I could perform a ritual that would allow us to speak more clearly.

Morik snorted and reeled back in shock. You what what WHAT now? I'll show you a spirit totem! He brought his head down to eye level with this strange one and squinted his eyes, glaring at him for several heartbeats.
He snorted, then shrugged, seemingly having made up his mind. He held up his paw for Ishi to pluck some fur. If a bit of fur would help their group, what could it hurt? He'll just have to make sure he keeps an eye on that one. It wouldn't do to let someone who carried his fur around to die, what would that say about him? The man looked hardy and ferocious, they could do well together.

Elysia blinked at the interaction before shaking her head with a quiet laugh. Despite her environment growing up, she’d been around all manner of people, but these two surprised her. They were a level she wasn’t accustomed to, yet found amusing.
She encouraged everyone to get comfortable around her hideout as she pulled the map out of her backpack. Unraveling it, she gestured for Findral to come closer. "This is what your friend was trying to keep from the Duke before he was murdered. What do you make of it?"

With the party safely ensconced in the temporary shelter of Elysia's bolt hole, Findal examines the map. It takes him some time - he's tired, distraught, and the script is obscure - but eventually he leans back with a sigh and wide eyes. "You say that Tykus said all the realm may depend on you finding it, is that correct?" He rubs a hand over his face. "This is a treasure map, a map that leads to some kind of artifact. You see here? It says..." he peers at the script again, and translates slowly: "...the location of the...abbey...founded to...anoint...yes, anoint is the right word...found to anoint the peace and keep the artifact safe from evil hands." He points to a spot on the map, just a bit to the right of the center. "That's here. There's another bit of text here; it's not clear whether it's the same location or someplace nearby, but I don't understand it. It says simply: 'THOSE BOUND BY THE OATH'...or perhaps 'THE OATHBOUND ONES'"
Findal's eyes glow and he looks at you all expectantly. "Well? Don't you see? The Duke and those drow were both after this map, trying to find this artifact, and they want it badly enough to break laws, steal, and murder to get it. They killed Tykus and detained that old man! Those are evil acts, and I think it's vital that they don't get it...whatever it is." He looks at you all again, moving from face to face. Then he snaps his fingers. "Oh! Maybe you don't see it? Look here, you know the city, yes?" Findal motions to Elysia, Eozindra, and Ishi. He points to different places on the map. "There are a few locations on the map that correspond to places that still exist. Here, 'Arktplach' is an ancient term for Market Place, and 'Cercamarplach' is the ocean front place...these are locations that mark the entrances to ancient tunnels under the old city that was here before Grayhaven was founded. The treasure map is showing us a location HERE, in the ruins under our feet!"

OOC:
It's clear to those of you who know the city that Findal is right; these locations do correspond to several ways into the tunnels beneath the city, and give the direction to move through the ancient tunnels to get to the abbey that contains the artifact. It may also be the case that the tunnels would provide a way to emerge outside of the city.Jul 8, 2024 7:29 am
Eozindra leans into the huddle over the map, reexamining the parchment with the input from Findal. She scrutinizes the lines and scripture with new understanding granted by the gnome’s explanations. "I see it," she exhales excitedly and leans further in, dropping her minuscule weight onto Elysia’s lap as she gets as close to the scholar’s level. The pale half-elf’s eyes zip back and forth over the map, following the gnome’s gestures. The bard’s ferver and excitement seem equal if not surpassing that of the little gentleman; while she shares his enthusiasm for the discovery of ancient knowledge and artifacts, she is additionally enlivened by the possibility of enacting an adventure like the ones she has only read about in books and epic poems. "We absolutely have to make sure they do not find this."
Is there a spot on the map indicated anywhere near our current location? She would be looking for the nearest entrance to get off the streets as quickly as possible once they leave the hiding spot.
OOC:
Can I do a history or something check to see if there’s anything else Zin can help decipher? She looked at it before and figured out it was a map, but now that Findal is here to bounce ideas off of, maybe something in her teachings has been stirred in the back of her brain. Or maybe she can help translate some of the text.Is there a spot on the map indicated anywhere near our current location? Ishi thanks Morik profusely and says "I don't usually like dwarves but I think we could become friends, especially if you stay in your bear form. Then he cuts off a piece if his 50 foot rope. twisted it back together then un-twisted the piece and twisted and braided the bear fur into a bear shape, some how he had become a master of la corderie. Looking at his work, he remembers that different tribes twist ropes in different ways, This might help him identify distant relatives.
If we want go strictly RAW, the PHB says (page 50) "You must make or acquire a physic a totem object" It doesn't say anything about how long it will last if a bear turns into a dwarf,

Do we know what the oathbound are safekeeping?
She looks around for an answer, and when nothing comes, she tries a different question.
What should we do now? We can either destroy the map, ensuring that the drow or the duke don't get it - or we go for the artifact ourself?

"At this point, just based on the actions of the Duke and also the Drow, I am inclined to find this artifact in question just to keep it from them," Adran says with a sigh. "Childish? Perhaps. Petty? Absolutely. I stand by what I said though... I genuinely feel they cannot be trusted with it."

Yes, that's fine, and the fur that Morik contributed to the totem will persist in the totem when the druid reverts back into his original form. Are there any observable physical changes that Ishi undergoes as he accepts the Bear as his totem animal?Redamancy says:

Rude. Just rude! Something ain't right in this elf's head, hating someone on account of their race. Morik snorted and shook his head, then plopped down on his haunches and reached over his shoulder for Jeffery. He was gentle with the creature, aware of his new bulk as a bear as he petted it.
The others could make figure out what to do with the map, he was just fine doing things without thinking.
