A Dangerous Gift

Findal leads the way into the warm and dry interior of the Inn. The first room is the ground floor of the stone tower: a large, circular room filled with chairs and tables with more chairs. Pegs on the wall on either side of the fireplace allow the party to hand their cloaks to dry. The roaring fire combined with the burning tapers on each table impart a cozy yellow glow to the room, aided by a hanging chandelier above their heads fashioned from interlocking elk horn racks that bears many candles, too.

There are a few other guests here, but a large central table sits empty. Findal crosses to this, saying "This one should be large enough for all of us!" A barmaid comes up, and Findal addresses her. "Good evening, miss! My friends here have had a long day - we all have - but they've done heroic deeds. I want to make sure that they're well cared-for right now, while I talk to the innkeeper." He takes a handful of gold coins out of his pouch and sets them in a neat stack in front of the woman, then turns to the party, standing on tip-toe to see over the top of the table. "Friends, you've done excellent work today. Feel free to order what food and drink you like, while I just check on our rooms. I'll be back in a few moments." Findal bows (which some of you can see, but for the rest, his head just disappears below the table for a moment), and then leaves, going to the archway to the north, which opens into the long wooden portion of the Inn. He re-emerges a few moments later, following the smiling innkeeper. They head to the other, eastern archway, which opens onto a long hallway lined with doors.

Not before tomorrow anyway.

Morik was ready for rest as well, and agrees with Elowin, but he noticed Findal going off alone with the innkeeper. "Oy! Wait up! I’ll come with you."

Everything about this day had gone wrong. There was no way he’d allow Findal to go off alone.

He took off after them.
May 22, 2024 2:17 pm
Adran was just starting to stand when Morik beat him to it. The elf looks after Findal, then gives the Dwarf a nod and sits back down.

Adran looks at his sister and can't help but smile. Only for a moment, however. His brow quickly furrows and he purses his lips. One would get the impression something is bothering him. The truth is, he wants to strip half naked and lounge by the fire and tell anyone who protests to sod off. The day had turned into quite the series of events, and he wanted to be done with it... and yet, he didn't feel they could. He was on edge, just waiting for the next complication he knew was coming.

Still... food sounded good. He hadn't eaten much after the whole debacle with the runaway coach and he was realizing just how hungry he was. Something roasted perhaps. And fruit. Water would suffice to drink -- he couldn't risk his senses being clouded. And so he ordered, then proceeded to attempt to watch everything all at once.

Everyone flops down in chairs, either at the table or in comfy chairs by the fireplace. Elowin doffs her boots and begins to massage her aching feet with little sighs of pleasure. Ishi, Adran, Elysia, Morik, and Eozindra sit at the table just behind her. Adran orders for himself, and then begins making suggestions to the others as he's confident that they will be feeling hungry soon. Morik lurches to his feet and follows Findal and the innkeeper down the side hallway into the guest wing, Jeffery clinging to his hair so as not to fall off from the sudden movement.

Tykus
Then, just as Adran has finishing placing the order and the barmaid has left for the kitchen, the front door bangs open. A wild and rain-drenched older human man without a cloak staggers in; his scholarly robes are sopping wet but he does not stop by the fire. Instead he stumbles over to the party's table, eyes locked on Elysia's. Desperately he slips a leather scroll case to her from under his arm and says in a strained whisper only just audible to Elowin and the other four members of the party at the table: They're after me...they must not have it!" With these words, each of you recognizes the voice from the clockwork frog: this is Tykus himself! His wild eyes seek out each of yours in turn. "Find it, find it if you can! All the realm may depend on it!" With that, Tykus leaps past the table in a staggering lope, dodging through the archway into the kitchen and out the back door.

Not a moment later, the front door slams open again, and four Grayhaven guards stomp in, their cloaks dripping from the rain. They are followed by two Royal guards, and then behind them a nobleman in his late middle-age follows, wearing the uniform and insignia of the Royal Regent and the Duchy of Grayhaven.

It is the Duke of Grayhaven himself, Dain Draymore! He is followed by a proud half-orc in full plate armor engraved with the royal insignia, who has to duck and turn slightly to fit through the door. The Duke scans the room coldly, registering all the shocked faces, and orders: "Search everywhere. Question everyone."

The guards split up, moving to each table, the kitchen, and the guest wing.

What do you each do?
May 23, 2024 2:50 am
Shit. Time to improvise. I am never going to get a meal at this rate.

Adran gets his bag, going for the box they had retrieved from the Were-- nevermind. The box. Locking eyes with his sister, he proceeds to sigh and then turn.

Loudly, he proclaims, "Your Highness! My apologies Sire! Had we known it was this important we would have come straight to you. We had hoped to make ourselves more presentable before we sought an audience with someone of your station!"

Adran holds the box and glancing to each side proceeds to take a knee while holding the sealed box aloft.

By the Gods, play along! Hopefully someone can warn Findal...
May 23, 2024 3:41 am
The bard’s hand shoots out to grip her sister’s wrist in a sudden panic. "I thought it was just a cat," she whispers with a tone of regret. "I saw something behind us but I didn’t think it was important." Her sense of failure to report on a potential suspicion is palpable in the sad lilt of her voice.

Catching sight of the item being passed to Elysia, and knowing that if anyone was going to succeed at concealing contraband it would be her, Eozindra adjusts her positioning beside the less pale half-elf in an effort to shield her hands from view and give her a chance to stow the object before whatever happens next.

Sia was happy to relax back at the end of the day. She enjoyed watching her old friend kick back and break social expectations without a second thought. It brought back memories of her and Elowin enjoying the festivities and celebrations that had introduced them originally.

What she hadn’t expected was for someone she didn’t know to make her the focus of his panicked gaze, nor had she been prepared for the message he left. Thanking her sister in her head, Elysia scrambled to tuck the case beneath her cloak and hide it from prying eyes.

Softly under her breath, she speaks gently in Elven to Eozindra. "Stand tall and shoulders back. We are nobility and we must act like it." She hates to embrace her true nature as it’s always a risk to ever bring up their place in society, but she knows people of status are often more easily taken at their word and she’s prepared to use that to get them out of this if need be.

Duke Draymore
The two Royal Guards stand on either side of the Duke at the front door, watching the scattered guests in the room warily. The Duke gives a curt nod, and the guard captain in plate armor ducks back outside. The other four - regular Grayhaven guards - split up, one going into the guest wing, the other going into the kitchen, and the other two going to different tables in the common room to address the diners.

Elysia deftly tucks the scroll case out of view just as a guard leaves the adjacent table and comes to the party's table. "Good evening!" he smiles, revealing that he's lost some teeth in the past. "Have any of you seen the man in robes who just entered the inn, and did you see him carrying anything?"
Meanwhile, Morik just saw the innkeeper open a door for Findal. As soon as the door opened, Peppercorn the speckled magpie flapped out of the room (even though they are yards away, Jeffery recoiled a little) and landed on the gnome's shoulder with a glad "Quee-dee-zee!" as if it's trying to say "Fin-dazz-le!" Findal scolded "How did you get out of your cage, you naughty bird?" but he's certainly pleased, and proceeded into the room. Then Morik hears the noise of the front door and the conversation in the common room die. He turns and sees a Grayhaven guard enter the guest wing and start opening and closing doors. The innkeeper hustles forward to see what the issue is.
Elowin leaps up in her bare feet as Adran kneels and proffers the mahogany box carved with the Ducal seal. His curiosity piqued, the other Grayhaven guard leaves what he's doing and comes over to the table, too. "They've got a box with your seal on it, your Grace." he calls out as Elowin finishes her mildly-indignant explanation. The Duke frowns. "Very well, take the box; we'll get to the bottom of this after we find the fugitive." The guard nods, shifts his spear to the crook of his elbow, and moves to squeeze past Elowin to take the box from Adran. Meanwhile, confident that his companion is taking care of this unexpected development, the first guard taps the butt of his spear on the floor to get everyone's attention and asks again: "Well? Did you see the robed man enter? Did you see him carrying anything?"
May 25, 2024 1:59 am
"Oh, a... so, you weren't tracking the box? I... we assumed you tracked the box here as we had barely just arrived before you did. You, uh, you understand our confusion." Adran chuckles softly.

"Forgive me. A man you say? A man ran in and kept running. I assume that was him? I don't believe I saw him carrying anything, but I was discussing dinner and was a bit distracted. Apologies, good sir," Adran says to the guard who took the box.
May 25, 2024 2:09 am
With wide eyes, Elysia gives the guard who just arrived to them a small, shy smile in return. "A good evening to you too. I can tell you good sir, I have never seen him before he burst through the door. It all happened so fast!" She blinks her eyes, reviewing what happened in her mind before shaking her head and continuing, "I can say with certainty that I didn’t see anything in his hands at any point when he came in or when he left." She doesn’t include anything about her knowledge that he did indeed have something with him, she just lets the carefully told truth imply words she wouldn’t say.

When the guard bangs his staff down after she’s already answered the question, she gives him a well practiced haughty glare down her nose at his ill mannered behavior.
May 25, 2024 2:18 am
Morik saw the Grayhaven guard enter and assumed nothing good could come of this. "Guard coming," he muttered under his breath at Findal, though he kept his eyes on the guard. He chewed his lips, already thinking what he'd do if the guard decided to detail Findal on account of simply being a gnome. He kept quiet though, and gave a confused and inquiring look instead, letting the innkeeper handle the talking.
May 25, 2024 5:11 am
Heeding her sister’s advice, Eozindra puts on her most dazzling expression of regal approachability and turns to face the guard as he rounds on their table. She channels the years of training for courtly presentation, giving off a signature expression that she crafted into a perfect blend of delicate innocence overlaying sultry eyes. As Elysia finishes her statement, the pale beauty is quick to follow up with, "I assure you, sir, his appearance to us was most startling. I do hope you are able to collect him before he frightens more innocent people."

Placing a hand lightly upon his arm, she leans in with a lowered voice. "I was so frightened but your presence here certainly soothes my racing heart." She gifts him a sweet smile and resumes a straightened posture. "He shot right through the room and I believe he was aiming to lose you through the building, but if you head around and follow the road in that direction," she indicates a path beyond the exterior wall, "I am sure you will capture him most speedily."
OOC:
Yes, she will flirt her way through life. Is there a pathway out of the back of this part of the inn that is opposite the kitchen? Like to the rooms? I’d like to indicate that he ran the opposite way than he actually did to set them on a trail in the wrong direction if I can… Like if he ran for a back exit on the left, I’d like to tell them he went right. Maybe through an open window or something if there’s no door in that direction.
May 25, 2024 6:54 am
"I am ishi, last of my tribe," he said looking at the floor. "I know nothing about cities or Dukes" he grunted while wiping his nose on his sleeve.

Where should we present ourselves tomorrow? Its a recovered box, and we did the recovering. There is a lot to tell about it.
Also, there was a dwarf, named kar'Javon who wanted to pry it open. I refused to let him. I can see you are busy so we won't take more of your time.

Elowin has been addressing the duke directly. He is just a man after all, with a demanding job, but still just a man.

She then remembers the other question. Oh a robed man? Sorry we just came in and I have been walking on stone all day. My focus was on getting my boots off and... She wiggles her toes in delight.

Sounds like a Deception check is called for from Adran and Elysia. It could also be a Deception check for Eozindra, or alternatively Persuasion, depending on whether you want to lean on the misdirection (Deception) or flirting/distraction (Persuasion). Similarly, Elowin could roll Deception (not paying attention) or Persuasion (distracting from the question to talk about details of the box).

The guard is throwing open each door and continuing toward Findal's door. If, while the others are dissembling in the common room, there's some interpersonal skill that Morik would like to similarly use to distract or delay or conceal, go ahead.

Findal emerges from his room again, with a little "light reading" (a stack of books retrieved from his luggage, piled up to his nose). In response to Morik's muttered question, Findal says "Hm? What's that you say?" at full volume, completely oblivious to the presence of the Grayhaven guard peeking into the rooms nearby. The guard starts in surprise and points at Findal: "You! Gnome! Come with me!" He strides forward and gently takes Findal's elbow, clearly with an eye to steering him down the hall and back into the common room. Peppercorn gives a chatter and spreads its wings for balance. Morik is right next to them now. "The Duke would like to speak with you now." the guard says, not unkindly, to the little sage.
The guards seem mollified by the combined excuses of the different party members; between the distractions of flirting, changing the subject, and providing the mysterious box that is somehow connected to the Duke, it seems like the Grayhaven guards don't really suspect any of you in particular of hiding anything. They turn back to the Duke and one says: "None of them have seen anything, Your Grace."

"Oh, really?" The Duke responds. "Is that what they told you?" The Duke struggles and fails to conceal a sneer. "Ridiculous. Search everyone!" The guards stiffen and salute, then turn back to the party with apologetic smiles. "I suppose it's possible the fugitive slipped something onto one of you without you noticing it..."
May 26, 2024 8:26 am
Sudden alarm rising within, Eozindra takes a determined step towards the Duke calling orders. Channeling all her training in diplomatic discourse, she dips a shallow curtsey as her approach concludes. "If you please, sir," she interjects, "I am unsure what it is we may have done to warrant such handling. Upon my honor, this is most unusual treatment. We did see your man, as we freely admitted, though he was a stranger to us and left rapidly through the back of the building. We have had a terribly trying day and be most gratified for an evening of respite in your fine city. If there is some manner in which I can put your concerns at ease, please let us speak." Holding firm in her perfect posture, heart pounding secretly against her ribs, she hopes her unique appearance, boldness, and verbal eloquence is enough to afford Elysia adequate opportunity to further conceal the smuggled object off of her person; or disappear herself somehow.

Without rolling perception or investigation since ain’t nobody got time for that with the Devilish Duke staring us down, can you tell me if there’s the messenger case I’ve hidden on myself has any identifying marks or is it plain? Also, I don’t know if it’ll help Eozindra or not, but we’re both noble backgrounds and have position of privilege as a benefit of it. I don’t know if it’ll help with the Duke, but your average Joe should find us more believable because of it.

As quickly as possible for Elysia, she moved the contents of the messenger case into her sister’s backpack underneath the table she’d sat at. Once she did, she gently shoved the now empty case towards another table in the path her sister indicated. She didn’t draw attention to it once she did, planning for something to use as a distraction from the party if they needed it.

Once she did so, she moved in front of those of them who were tense. With her own practiced smile, she attempted to appease the Duke. "I do not believe there is a need to upend everyone’s evening. He came closest to me and if he’d slipped anything on anyone, it would be me. Search my person and see that the old man had no opportunity to hide anything on anyone."

Inside, Morik's mind whirled, thinking up possible solutions to get them out of this mess, but he lacked Eozindra's charm and magic. Something was happening in the common area, he hoped his friends weren't involved—oh let's be honest, the way this day's been going, they're likely being gnawed by a vampire at the moment.

Various cries of outrage fill the common room at this brusque and abrupt treatment. The Duke looks on impassively. The palace guards on either side of him nervously grip the hilts of their sheathed swords. The Grayhaven city guards raise their free hands in supplicating gestures, trying to mollify the incensed patrons, particularly the one closest to Elowin, who is clearly torn between his orders and his reluctance to provoke the cleric further. With all this, Elysia just barely manages to slip the contents of the case - a bundle of some very old parchment - into Eozindra's pack and drop the now-empty scroll case to the ground without quite getting noticed by any of the guards nearby. But one of the guards sees the motion as the case rolls to a stop below the chair of one of the guests at the center table. "What's this?" the guard bends down and picks up the case. "Your Grace, a scroll!" The guest in the seat, an elderly man who might have a bit of tiefling blood, starts in surprise. "What's that? That...! Where did that come from?" The Grayhaven guard who was inspecting the guest rooms returns from the hall - frowning as he steps around Morik, completely unimpressed - while gently leading the book-laden Findal by the elbow. The last guard who went into the kitchen returns, clearing the way for the guard captain in full plate armor, who has apparently just come in from the back door. The captain bears a limp body in wet scholar's robes slung over his massive shoulder. He stomps up to the table in the center of the room (the patrons there hurriedly grab their plates and cups) and heaves the body onto the table where it can be seen by everyone in the room. "We've found our man." he announces grimly.

It's Tykus. A great bloom of crimson blood spreads over the breast of his robes, where his heart has been pierced by two short crossbow bolts. "He had nothing on him," the guard captain announces, "The murderer must have taken it." As everyone's eyes turn on the elderly tiefling, whatever The Duke was about to say is interrupted when Findal cries out in horror as he recognizes the body, dropping his armload of books with a crash. "No! Tykus!"

The Duke raises his eyebrow, turning to really observe Findal for the first time. "Did you know this man?"

Furious with indignation, Findal snaps: "Yes...yes, I did! Tykus was a gentleman and a scholar! He doesn't deserve to be hounded through the rain by you lot, nor treated with such indignity in death!"

"Hm." The Duke blinks. "This fugitive was involved in research that poses a threat to Grayhaven and the Realm, and was known to be collaborating with a gnome that fits your description. You will tell us everything you know about him and his research."

"I don't know anything! He was just my friend!" Findal protests, weeping.

"Hm." The Duke sighs. "It's clear you aren't telling us everything. You and that man there" he indicates the tiefling, "will be detained and taken to the castle for further questioning. Bring them...and let the fine citizens return to their evening of respite!" The guard captain nods and grabs Findal's arm and begins to drag him toward the front door. A Grayhaven guard helps the elderly tiefling up out of his chair, and the guard captain grabs him, too.

"My friends!" Findal calls out to the heroes, struggling futilely against the powerful grip. "Help me! Tell them! I don't know anything about Tykus' research!" Peppercorn chatters angrily, flapping its wings.

As soon as the royal procession leaves, Adran rises and moves to the body to look for clues as to who killed the man. His first point of inspection will be the bolts that seemingly killed him. What are the odds they match the bolt from the incident with the coach earlier in the day?

Watching the guards lead the two men out had the half-elf’s heart breaking. The man was innocent, but she’d inadvertently caused him potential trouble. Elysia hadn’t been raised to believe in collateral damage and vowed to herself that she’d help him somehow.

With a squeeze of her eyes, she turned with a soft sigh as she heard Adran’s words. "Not necessarily," she murmured, contemplating the events of the day. "The bolts fired at Argus happened before he’d even crossed our paths. Hells below, it was the reason he even crossed our path. The link, I believe, is their professions. Tykus and Argus both are scholars.

We need to free both men the guards took, but I also think we need to have another word with Argus, if he isn’t sharing the same fate as this poor man,"
she gestures to the body on the table.

Elowin is filled with rage and adrenaline. She was ready to throw down the the duke and his men. Its clear to everyone that there is a lot of pent up energy.

I'll be in my room.

With those short words, Elowin leaves and with her the twilight blessing. Light returns to normal, and so does the smell of bodies, food, stale ale and sweet - all the normal smells of an inn.

Holding fast to her regal posturing, Eozindra mutters a hushed but obviously audible reproach conspiratorially to Elysia. "Unforgivable barbarism!" She keeps a stern eye on the Duke as the remaining guardsmen collect their quarries. She speaks to her sister as indicated by her face being tilted towards the dark-haired half-elf, though never breaks her reproachful stare upon the man in charge of this scene.

"I do believe this is the most atrocious behavior I have witnessed by a man of such supposed stature. Completely unfounded arrests on innocent gentlemen who are guilty only of being a certain race and of educated class. I had been led to believe this city was beyond such base and uncouth management. We must send notice home to correct the information sent abroad."

Finally, she turns her full attention to her sister, using an exaggerated motion to dismiss the Duke from her observations with a flick of her ivory curls. Slighting his position within the city with her action and hoping her sister will pick up on the bluff, she purses her lips together firmly and collects her bag before quickly exiting the communal space in the direction of the private accommodations for the night.

Once out of sight, she pulls a small copper wire from a pin concealed in her hair and presses it to her lips while tenting her index fingers in the direction of the space she just vacated. "We’re coming to get you," she assures Findal. "Stay strong. We’ll get you out of this."

I think I’m going for some sort of "shame the man in charge" tactic now. Gonna try to get the sense across that Zin is a person of foreign renown and has some sway with political deals elsewhere that she is going to use to the detriment of Grayhaven’s standing there based on how douchey this guy is acting. So much pearl clutching.

Things were unraveling rapidly, and far too quickly for Morik to do anything about it. Tykus was murdered, Findal was captured and was now being led away along with some random man. "You can't just take folks for no reason!" Morik yelled again, though without much bluster at this point, as it was becoming clear that the Duke wouldn't simply let things drop.

"Civilization!" He shouted in disgust, a final gust of bluster. "We can't just let them take him!" He said accusingly at his companions, his anger misdirected.

The funny thing is, I imagine that Zin probably is renown in a way.
With a sigh of disappointment at the Duke, she too turns away to look at Ishi. "Do not mind Lady Eozindra, she is upset that such cruelties can exist. The world she is from believes in kindness and equality to all, no matter race, profession, or any other qualities. Come, let us all join her, I believe she could use some good company before we all end the night."

She looks to Morik as she turns to leave with her own bag. "We will not abandon them, but if we are to help, we need to recuperate ourselves. We will help them."

I'm not sure what else we can do at this exact moment. We all had some spectacularly bad rolls in this little engagement. Starting a fight with the Duke directly seems dangerously foolish and I/Zin feels that pushing too much further will cause a melee. She's half hoping her little announced plan of sharing the Duke's behavior "abroad" will cause him to leave Findal (at least for the evening, even if guards are posted around the building), but not really expecting it.

Duke Draymore

spaceseeker19

May 29, 2024 3:39 am
Duke Draymore
"No! No! I don't know what that is!!" the old man cries feebly as the guard captain drags him inexorably toward the door.

"My friends! Help me!" Findal cries aloud again, and the guard captain gives him a rough shake that clacks his teeth together. The rest of the guards watch the people in the Inn's common room tensely, worried that someone might take action, particularly with Morik's outburst. As Eozindra berates the Duke, a woman who was at the tiefling's table sobs as her father is dragged away. Tykus' blood stains her table and drips onto the floor. The elderly tiefling tenses, and the flame in the fireplace and all the candles flare up brightly with a roar...until the guard captain shifts his grip and backhands the old man with one gauntleted fist. The old tiefling stumbles, dazed, and then is dragged out the door with Findal, who reaches out imploringly one final time to the heroes. Eozindra's Message arrives and she sees the gnome's eyes widen as he hears the communication just as the front door closes behind him.

The Duke gives a curt nod. "Bring the body and follow us to the dungeons." Two of the Grayhaven guards hand their spears to their companions, grab Tykus' body, and heft him up and carry his corpse out. The other two Grayhaven guards follow, backing out of the inn warily. The Duke remains for a moment with his two Royal Guardsmen. "It is unfortunate that dangerous elements continue to try to undermine the kingdom," The Duke says grimly, his voice carrying through the Inn. "Know that we are trying to prevent a great threat to the Queen, the City, and the Realm. I'm sorry to have disturbed your evening, and if any innocents have been detained, they will be healed and released from the castle gaol after questioning. Sometimes there are prices that must be paid for peace." The Duke turns to the innkeeper, handing him a pouch. "And I am sorry for the mess. Please accept this as repayment for the damages, and to pay for everyone's food & drink." He turns and performs a shallow bow to the room, the large gilt symbol of his office swinging down in front of him. "Please enjoy the rest of your evening." Then Duke Grayhaven leaves with the remaining Royal guards. The room is momentarily silent but for the crackling of the fire and the low sobs of the woman at the bloody table.
May 29, 2024 3:42 am
The guests are muted, muttering in conversation as the servers fulfill orders and the innkeeper escorts the disconsolate woman to her room. Adran crosses to the table where Tykus' body had lain, and the party discusses how the different events of the day might be connected. At around the same time, everyone in the party realizes that they won't be able to collect their pay from Findal as long as he's in a dungeon. At least he paid for the rooms in advance. Elowin heads off to "her room." The innkeeper knows that the party came in with the gnome who paid. Elysia and Eozindra are familiar with the location of the castle dungeon, or at least the exterior holding areas where prisoners are kept; they haven't yet had occasion to see the interior of the castle. They think it's likely that the gnome and the old man will be taken to the holding areas first, and the party could reconnoiter there in the morning. Everyone in the party saw Elysia's sleight of hand and knows that the contents of the package Tykus delivered are in Eozindra's bag, but by unspoken agreement, the party knows that it would be wise to not examine it - whatever it is - out in the open common room. Scullions emerge from the kitchen and pour sand on the bloody table and the floor, starting the job of clean-up.

Do you want to do anything else now, or wait until everyone has gone to the rooms for a long rest?

May 30, 2024 11:42 pm
Elysia slips into Eozindra's room, and the two of them open the pack with curiosity. They pull out the contents of the scroll case that Tykus had slipped to the heroes. It is an ancient piece of dry parchment. Unrolling it carefully, Elysia and Eozindra immediately recognize that it is a map of some kind, depicting streets or passages, though it is not at all clear where or what the map depicts. There are many runes of an unfamiliar type that form a border in the margins all the way around the map, though there is much more recent ink that has been added, written Common notes on various parts of the border, which read: "the location of the abbey," "founded to anoint the peace, and keep the artifact safe from evil hands," and "the Oath Bound Ones." The two make a note of it to show the others, and then get some rest themselves, as they need to sleep unlike the full elves in the party.

The Duke's Dungeons
During the night, the PCs were resting at the Lucky Copper Inn.

Elsewhere, in the Castle Dungeons (really the processing jail adjacent to the castle), a lone, aged tiefling, shackled on the wall, was being interrogated. A silent, hulking minotaur stood close by and sharpened a knife the size of an elf's forearm. A small table was squeezed into the cell. At the table, lit by a single candle - the only illumination in the room - a scribe took frantic notes, capturing everything that was said for the Duke's eventual review. A black-clad interrogator asked: "Why did you kill the wizard? What did you take from his body?"
Trembling, the elderly tiefling croaked: "I don't know anything about the wizard! When he ran into the Inn was the first I ever saw him! I didn't kill anybody!"
"What did you take from his body?"
Wheezing, barely louder than a whisper, the tiefling struggled to reply: "I don't know anything about his body - I was in my seat eating supper! He ran in, he ran out - I didn't see any more of him until that man in the mail carried in his dead body and threw it on the table!"
"Is this your scroll case?"
"No...no..."
"Why was it under your seat?"
"I have no idea! Maybe somebody dropped it!"
"What happened to the contents of the case?"
"I told you I don't know anything about the case!"
"Were you planning on using it for yourself, or were you going to sell it?"
"Sell what? The scroll case? What are you talking about?"
"Were you working with the gnome?"
"Gnome? What gnome?"
"The gnome sage who called out to you for help. The gnome who was working with the fugitive you murdered."
"I didn't...the only gnome I saw was the one who had just come in, with that group at the other table...they must have been the ones he was calling to..."
"Something so dangerous as the contents of the case would be worth a lot to the right buyer...especially people who want to bring down the city of Grayhaven. How much did they offer you, to kill that man?"
"I didn't kill anybody!"
"You've never killed anyone?"
"nuh...n-no..."
"You've never hurt anyone, either, have you? Never accidentally set someone on fire, perhaps?"
"I have never accidentally set someone on fire!"
"So you did it intentionally!"
"No...! No!"
"Someone with demon blood, the temptation is too great, and it's too easy to use your hellish powers to get what you want."
"I never...I haven't..."
"Maybe you did it by accident, maybe you just wanted to slow him down, hurt him enough to be able to rob him, and you went a little too far!"
"Too far with a crossbow?!"
"So you admit that you used a crossbow!"
"I didn't use a crossbow! I was sitting inside, having supper, when he burst in, stopped at a table, and ran out again!"
"Stopped at your table, eh? Why did he stop? Did he give you something? Did he give you the scroll case?"
"He didn't stop at my table! He stopped at another table!"
"You'd like us to believe that, wouldn't you? Well, we're going to keep asking you questions until you start telling us the truth, and then the Priest will arrive, and he can catch you in your lies! And we'll put the questions to your little accomplice, too!"
Jun 1, 2024 3:10 am
Morning dawns, the sun beginning to break through the rain clouds.

At the Lucky Copper Inn, the party, refreshed, has risen and gathered together at a table to take stock of what's happening and what their next steps should be. Elysia and Eozindra have just shared what they discovered about the map with the others (they haven't shown it yet, for fear of being observed in the Common Room).

Omg… you’re breaking my heart!
After a fitful sleep, Sia is wide awake at the start of the day. Adrenaline is beginning to pump her veins as she plans and plots while breaking her fast. She hasn’t planned a "jail break" in quite some time and she’d been working mostly alone for that. She had assistance if she asked for it, now.

Dressed in her full black gear, her fine cloak inside her pack for now, and hair pinned out of the way, she addresses the rest of the group. "I don’t care if you wish to remain behind, but I am going to free Findral and that poor old man. If you’d like to join me, I will appreciate it. I’m currently plotting two paths to do so: either full scale breaking in and stealing them away, which puts a target on everyone including that innocent man’s head, or using political clout to do so. I can pretend I’m a noble and use that to try to bargain with the Duke for their release. What are your thoughts?"

Her question is directed to the group, but she looks to Eozindra as she asks it. Sia knows if she takes on a different name, she can use her birthright as a noble to possibly aid them, but it means leaving town a lot sooner than she and her sister had planned.

There is no Aunty here, Ishi.

Elowin turns to Elysia. The Duke has seen us all.
If he is competent in any way or form, he will have made inquiries about us. But we have a legitimate business with him. We have answers to his questions about the box that he reclaimed yesterday.
I say we go to the castle, and talk to him about the box. Ask about the drow and Findal. We will not learn much properly, but we must try this before we try and break in.
OOC:
Elowin knows nothing about the map that you found.

Morik had had a fitful rest, up most of the night wincing at the thought of the torture Findal might be going through while they slept on soft beds. After the wink of sleep, he took care to feed Jeffery a Goodberry again before popping down and joining the others, who were discussing what to do next.

"Approaching the Duke with legitimate information is liable to just get us captured. There’s no telling how someone like him might react even to folks giving him information. I’d rather stay away from the Duke’s eyes and break in."
Jun 1, 2024 9:45 pm
Kilikina says:
In case you didn’t catch on to the hint, I’m thinking using my character’s real name, using the excuse I’m there looking for your character as a way to use the noble to get in with the devilish Duke. Just wanted you aware so your character can give a true opinion as it technically affects your character too.
Eozindra considers her sister’s plan carefully with her chin pressing into folded hands. "Or," she proffers after biting her lip, "I can be you. And you can do what you do best." She blinks pointedly at Elysia and raises her eyebrows as if to ask for an opinion. "You get them out of there. I can be distraction."

Letting her idea be considered, the bard looks over at Elowin and nods after releasing a sigh. "He does know our faces though, and that is problematic. Perhaps I go as my current self? Insist that I am seeking to believe his true nature is not what I saw and it was the result of some misunderstanding and unfortunate day for him. Busy him in a social engagement while the rest of you help those unfortunate souls being held?"

With a gentle smile, she looks to Ishi and shakes her head sadly. "I don’t think we will have the capacity to do such. Between the sparse plantings here and the overwhelming force we will meet in retaliation, we have to be careful about how we approach this whole situation."
OOC:
You’re better at sneaking. Might be better if I pretend to be you looking for me and let you do the subterfuge. Or go in as the bard of some small renown. Maybe with a "traveling bodyguard" from our little circle?

Is there anything Zin/Sia may have gotten from the parchment that gives any other clues?

Ishi, Morik, and Elowin exchange quick glances, acknowledging what the three of them all heard: the clink of armor and the clunk of wooden hafts on cobblestones as riders dismount. A low voice outside utters terse statements.

Her mind races straight to the thought that guards have found out that they have the map and she's prepared to keep them from discovering it and whatever secrets it holds. Quickly placing her hand on the hilt of her rapier, ready to unsheathe it, she tries to drown out the world and hear what is being said. Adran listens without moving from the table. Elysia moves to the other side of Morik, but whatever the dwarf heard enraged him enough that he transforms into a shaggy brown bear, drowning out the half-elf's chance of hearing anything.

Back at the table, Adran hears something in the kitchen, and whirls around to see the back door burst open and three guards - two Grayhaven guards and one Royal guardsman - rush through. A split-second later, the front door swings open as another Grayhaven guard begins to step through. Elysia and Ishi can each see another guard a bit behind and to either side, but lifting his head, Morik the bear can see past the guard's shocked face: an armored carriage with a barred door hanging open awaits, with a mounted plate-armored guard captain sitting astride his horse protectively in front of Duke Draymore himself, who stands on the wagon's step. Saddled horses reveal that there are more cavalry on foot nearby. All this happens in less than a second. "Take care, men..." the Duke is saying, but he stops when he sees Ishi's blade slicing down at the guard who's just opened the front door.

...the Grayhaven guard's cry is cut off as Elysia's lightning-fast rapier stabs in at his gut; his teeth clack together as he deflects the blade with the haft of his spear just enough that the point doesn't pierce him but the blade gouges a furrow in the haft and severs a row of links in his chain shirt with a chatter of little popping noises.
As that sound reaches everyone, the power of Lunae suddenly throbs through the area; each candle in the Inn dims to pinpricks, resembling fireflies in the gloaming, and the golden glow of the early morning sunshine fades to a greyish purple. It's as if the light is draining into each of the party members, as they are each suffused with greater vigor (remember to note the temporary HP gain). Elowin's pocket mirror flashes in her hand, gathering the light and reflecting it in a shimmering glamer that wraps around her like a cloak. With one smooth motion, Adran draws a dagger, takes a step toward and kitchen, and flings the dagger at the closest Grayhaven guard in the kitchen (GG3). The dagger sinks deep into the guard's shoulder just above his collarbone; the guard grunts in pain.
But the authorities did not come unprepared for violence. The Royal guardsman outside (RG1) nocks arrows to bow and attempts to sink shafts into Morik and Elysia (who have partial cover from the doorway). The arrow intended for Elysia goes wide, but Morik is hit for 3 piercing damage (coming off of the temp HP).
The Royal guardsman in the kitchen (RG2) nocks arrows and attempts to perforate Adran and the shaggy shape of Morik beyond him, but Adran's keen hearing and shouted warning has alerted everyone to their presence so there is no surprise and he brings his shield to bear. It's a good thing, too, because the arrow thwocks! into the shield right in front of his face! The other arrow sinks into the bear's flank, and Morik takes another 3 piercing damage, eliminating the 2 remaining temp HP and bringing him down to 33/34 HP!
OOC:
Here I'm pausing to see whether we'll get initiative and an action from Adran (I'll revise this part of the round one description if he has >17 initiative). I also would like to get a round one action from Ishi, who will be going next, on initiative count 16.

If your actions haven't been resolved yet, you can change what you intend to do based on the results of what's happened so far. Note, however, that Morik's bite attack is going to hit that AC16.

OOC:
Yes, I'm giving them another chance to declare a specific action (and roll initiative, in Adran's case). I'm sorry to make everyone wait for that, but I prefer to give players autonomy, and sometimes stuff happens. That said, I will post the remainder of the turn in a few hours tomorrow, and will roll for them if it comes to that.

Round one, continued

Ishi sees his new friend transform into an intimidating bear and then get pierced by multiple arrows...Ishi's heart thuds in his chest and his pupils dilate. Each of the dim pinpricks of light of candles glow red like dying stars in his vision and his breath hisses between clenched teeth as his sword blurs, hacking down again and again on the Grayhaven guard's shield. Wood chips and metal shavings fly as the shield is destroyed and the man's arm flies off. The guard collapses. The other Grayhaven guard at the front door screams "BERRY! NOOO!" then tries to rush the barbarian with his spear. But Morik the bear meets him in the doorway, swatting this Grayhaven guard's shield to the side and then his ursine jaws close on the man's head with a crunch that ends his life, too.

Inside, the two remaining Grayhaven guards rush out of the kitchen with their spears leveled at Elowin and Adran. One Grayhaven guard (GG4) manages to withstand the beguiling effects of Lunae and stabs at the glowing figure of Elowin...but she easily deflects the point with her shield. The other guard's thrust is weakened by the dagger still lodged in his shoulder, and he misses Adran completely.

Trying to see past the grisly view of the bear with the skull in its jaws, Eozindra shifts to find the source of the first voice: Duke Draymore himself. Her taunt sears toward him, but the only visible effect is that his brows knit together in a frown. The guard captain sees what is happening in the doorway - two soldiers out of commission - and calls: "Please, Your Grace, return to the dungeon and we will bring these miscreants to you there!" As he says this, the guard captain winds his heavy crossbow and attempts to hit Morik in the doorway with it. Morik is pierced for 3 more damage! As the guard captain grabs another quarrel to reload, the Duke shouts "I have confidence in you all!" then demonstrates the truth of both Eozindra and Elysia's mockery by shouting "Drive on!" to the carriage driver. The carriage begins to roll away with the Duke its only apparent occupant, slowly gaining speed.

With an eggagerated roll of her eyes, Eozindra laughs curtly as the Duke turns to run. "There goes your mighty leader with his tail between his legs!" she calls to the guards.

She reaches a hand to the dagger at her side, though instead of leveling it against any of the swarming guards, she pierces the edge of her palm to produce a bead of blood upon her own hand. The crimson spreads as she rubs it between fingers, then throws her arms wide and spins on the spot like a child dancing in the rain.

"Bad nobility always has bad lapdogs!" She proclaims, sending forth a wave of energy to disrupt the incoming offense.

How far away is the Duke? Morik will step outside so the others can also engage the enemies without him blocking the way, but I'm wondering if Morik could catch up to the Duke and knock him off his high horse, physically, not metaphorically.

Just to clarify for everyone: the Duke is inside an armored carriage (which was intended to transport dangerous captives - ie, all of you) that is being pulled by a team of horses. Morik can outrun anything on foot right now, but none of you can outrun horses. There are, however, the horses that all the guards rode in on, which are loosely hitched out front. The seventh horse is still being ridden, by the guard captain, who is clearly trying to hang back and defend the Duke's retreat.

@grifter730: if you want to attack the royal guard with Ishi (although keep in mind how Ishi has rolled) or rush the guard captain, feel free to roll the attacks and damage.

Oh I wish I felt confident to act on this information, but I’ll leave that sadly to another to do.
With a curl of her lip, Elysia feels disgust for the Duke’s departure. She’d assumed he’d want to have his hands in their capture the whole time as he had the night before. She peeked out of the doorway, seeing him leave and almost rushed to take chase through the streets, but she remembered the precious information she held, the same parchments another had died to keep hidden the Duke. Letting loose a string of colorful, Elvish words her parents would be flabbergasted she knew, she took her frustrations out where she could, on the guards trying to take them prisoner.

Moving beside Elowin, knowing they have their hands full and are about to encounter a third guard, she attempts to even the score by helping take out the guard that had just tried to harm her friend.

Elysia, swearing, leaves Morik and Ishi to defend the doorway and hurdles the table to land at Elowin's side with a rapier thrust at the Grayhaven guard attacking the cleric (GG4). His eyes widen and he steps to the side, evading the fierce point of her blade, but he twists right into her dagger, taking 6 points of piercing damage!
The air vibrates with the pulse of Lunae, affirming her presence and resolve in Elowin and her friends (everyone in the party now has 4 temporary HP). Behind her shield, Elowin grasps the ancient reliquary she wears around her neck and breathes the name of the goddess: "Lunea." Adran, Ishi, and Morik each feel that name echo in their hearts, as the essence of the deity touches and inspires them.

Deciding to activate a tried-and-true enhancement, Adran draws his second dagger and flips a switch on its handle. Sparks ignite a pressurized liquid, and the artificer's Green Flame Blade flickers to life as he attacks the same Grayhaven guard he's already struck (GG3). Unfortunately, the guard sidesteps the thrust and the flaming liquid splashes to the floor, leaving a little guttering patch of greenish fire on the boards.
OOC:
I realized as soon as I clicked "save" that I hadn't added the d4 from Elowin's blessing, but the d20 roll was low enough that it couldn't change the outcome.
At the front door, the Royal Guard (RG1) cast aside his bow when confronted by the massive bear (Morik) and drew his sword. No cowards, these guardsmen, even if their hereditary leader the Duke is of less stern stuff. He tries to beat back what he believes is the party's pet bear so that he can fulfill his assigned task: finding the suspects and apprehending them. One of the stabs strikes home; Morik takes 5 piercing damage (using up his 4 temp HP and dropping his total to 29).
In the kitchen, the staff has all scurried into hiding, cowering on the floor or fleeing out the back door. The second Royal Guard (RG2) walks up to the arch separating the kitchen and common room as he draws arrows from his quiver. Seeing Elysia stab an officer of the law and hearing Eozindra defame and deride the Duke has him direct an attack at each of them. He is unable to aim true; perhaps the dimness, the flickering green flames, or just some basic decency prevents him.

Ducking past the ferocious bear (which, he reminds himself, is his friend), Ishi stabs toward the Royal Guardsman (RG1) then spins as the guard does the expected thing and steps aside. The huge sword whirls at the end of the arc, arriving at the same spot as the guard when he steps back. The sword cleaves horizontally into the man's side, and the Royal guardsman grunts with the impact and the pain that follows it...but he manages to stay on his feet.

Knowing that the Royal Guardsman doesn't have long for the world and seeing the Duke getting away, Morik the bear bellows with outrage, squeezing the rest of the way out the front door and then leaping forward past Ishi to attack the mounted and heavily-armored guard captain that stands between him and the Duke's retreating carriage. Tottering on his feet, the heavily-injured Royal Guardsman attempts to hack at the bear as he leaves; Morik takes another 8 piercing damage. In four loping strides, the bear arrives at the horse, rears up and savagely rakes the guard captain, knocking the heavy crossbow from his grasp, and Morik's teeth tear at the metal vambrace encasing one arm (20 damage total!). Morik shakes his head and the guard captain is pulled from his saddle and flung to the ground, prone!
OOC:
Morik isn't specifically trying to knock the guard captain prone, but he DID say he wanted to pull him down, and he IS a large bear, so I'm having the guard captain roll a STR save or get knocked out of the saddle.
Eozindra laughs derisively, brandishes her dagger: "There goes your leader with his tail between his legs!" Then she pricks her palm, rubs the blood in her hands, and spins around calling: "Bad nobility always has bad lapdogs!" The Grayhaven guard (GG4) who has been fighting Elowin and Elysia feels it in his bones that this stunning woman is talking about him. Her eyes meet his, and he knows what she means. It's all about him. Yes, him: Garulf Cooper, Grayhaven guard, is a bad lapdog. His shoulders slump and a little bit of the fight goes out of him, along with much of his sense of self-worth.

The guard captain rolls to his feet, spits out a tooth, and grins. "Your pet won't stop me!" he calls out to the (rest of the) party. "When I finish with it, I'll be taking you all in for questioning...dead or alive!" He draws his long blade and his short blade. "I've never killed a bear before!" He leaps at Morik, blades blurring. "It shouldn't be too hard!" Morik and the guard captain locked in a furious melee, and a few of the swings of the longsword connected. Morik takes another 8 damage.

The armored carriage carrying the Duke is maybe 40 yards distant now, and slowing to navigate a turn down a side street.

A moment of shock hits Elysia as she watches the unique weapon that Adran has. "I would very much like your blade, my new friend," she tells him excitedly as she prepares for her next attack on the guard in front of her. What stops her is the arrow that passes by both her and her sister. Sia almost never feels, let alone expresses, true anger… except when someone tries to harm her sister.

Vision focused on the royal guard at the door, she launches her dagger at him before marching to him, swapping weapons as she goes. With a rage comparable to a barbarian, she cries, "You dare try to harm my Zus?! I shall make your last breath the most painful moment of your life!" ROUND THREE, part one

Elysia is furious that the royal guardsman (RG2) tried to hurt her sister. She flings her dagger at the man; it bounces off of the door jamb and into the kitchen with a sound of breaking pottery. Sheathing her rapier and drawing her other dagger, she steps around the Grayhaven guard she'd been fighting and vaults the bar to take a stab at the royal guardsman. The Grayhaven guard takes a swing at her back. So dispirited is he by Eozindra's scorn that his heart isn't in it, and the spear whistles through empty air. Elysia lands gracefully behind the bar and lunges into a series of stabs that do little other than force the royal guardsman to fend off her dagger with his bow.
OOC:
GG4 uses his reaction to make an opportunity attack...with the Bane penalty.
Elowin uses this distraction to disengage from the Grayhaven guard and then moves around the table toward the front door to extend Lunea's influence (Twilight Sanctuary) to include Morik the bear in his fight outside.
OOC:
@runekyndig, I'm assuming you want to extend the temp HP to Morik rather than Elysia, since he's been hit so many times, and the distance is such that you can't...quite...include them both in the 60' diameter, now that they've both moved away from the center in opposite directions.
With a clever press of a few buttons and the turning of a miniature crank, Adran refreshes the jet of flammable liquid (Green Flame Blade) and stabs his flaming blade at the Grayhaven guard (GG3) who still sports his first dagger sticking out of his shoulder. The blade strikes true, and the Grayhaven guard (GG3) is overcome as the flame leaps from Adran's dagger onto the glum face of the Grayhaven guard next to him (GG4, who takes 3 fire damage)! That man shrieks and bats at his eyebrows. He turns his ire on Adran.

The wounded, staggering Royal Guardsman outside (RG1) daringly attempts to retaliate against Ishi the raging barbarian. In his fury, the barbarian is focused on attack more than defense, and Ishi is struck and takes 2 points of damage (reduced from 4 due to rage, comes out of his temp HP).

The Royal Guardsman behind the bar (RG2) drops his bow and draws his short sword to retaliate against Elysia. His sword clashes and clangs against her dagger as they fence, but he manages to slip in past her dagger with his longer blade and slash her on her arm. Elysia takes 7 damage (4 temp and 3 regular).

Ishi continues to hack at the Royal Guardsman who just had the gall to strike him, but none of his blows land with that satisfying squelch of sundered flesh.

Nearby, the raging bear Morik bats the guard captain's blades away with his claws, making enough space to tear at the guard captain with his jaws (dealing 7 HP damage).

The depressed Grayhaven guard (GG4) with smoking eyebrows, the only one left standing, attacks Adran, attempting to skewer the artificer. Surprising everyone including himself, the spear plunges into Adran's thigh! Adran takes 7 piercing damage (4 temp and 3 regular).

Eozindra piles on Garulf's pity parade. "Nnnn..." The last Grayhaven guard tries to withstand the assault on his self-worth... "...n-NO! I am not some puppy! I can turn my life around! Things can only get better!"

The guard captain is starting to get worried now. Where are all the rest of the team? He slashes and hacks at the villains' pet (how he still thinks of Morik the bear), sure that it will break off and flee if he deals enough damage to it... "Scat, you beast! Get out of here, you dumb animal!" Morik takes 12 slashing damage, (4 temp HP and 8 regular, leaving him with 5 HP)!

Morik sees the Duke's carriage finish making the turn and it proceeds out of sight down a side street.

Are you sure about Morik’s HP bring that low? I’ve been updating my sheet as he gets damaged, and up until this latest post I had him at 29/34. Might be that I miscounted the initiative though, and he took damage before the temp HP got refreshed, or maybe I missed some damages.

He had 9 temp HP that got used up (and now he just got 4 temp HP again, thank you @Runekyndig !), if that helps the counting.

Are you sure about Morik’s HP bring that low?
OOC:
You and runekyndig are both right, in a way.
First, you're right that I got it wrong in my mid-way-through-round-3 post. I posted what was the correct amount of HP at the start of the round, rather than midway through the round, when Morik had received the 4 temp HP from Twilight Sanctuary. So what I posted said that he had 0 temp HP, which wasn't correct when I first posted it - the middle of round 3. Now, however, it is correct, because I've finished the round, adding the temp HP and then subtracting them from the damage that Morik received.

Second, runekyndig is correct about temp HP: temp HP never stack in 5e. When you receive temp HP, they always replace the amount of temp HP that the character had beforehand, whether that amount is 0 or 2 or 10 or whatever. Temp HP persist until they are lost through taking damage, or the character takes a long rest (which is why Elysia still got the benefit of temp HP even though she was outside of the Twilight Sanctuary's area of effect). Many abilities/spells (such as Elowin's Twilight Sanctuary or an Artificer: Artillerist's Eldritch Cannon Protector) allow the caster to choose which targets receive the temp HP when they are generated. So each round, Elowin could choose which characters within the effect receive the new [[1d6]] temp HP (the ones with fewer or no temp HP) and which characters don't receive the new temp HP (ones who already have a higher amount of temp HP). Up until this round, no one except Morik had taken any damage at all, so it made sense to say 'everyone gets the new amount.'

Anyway, I've finished the round 3 posting. You guys are doing great!
Jun 8, 2024 9:29 am
OOC:
Yeah I know they don’t stack, but Morik was getting damaged plenty, and then the Temp HP got refreshed, and then he got damaged again, and now they’ve been refreshed again, that’s how I’ve been counting them. Anyway, not gonna nickel-n-dime things, if you say it’s right I’ll take your word for it, just wanted to make sure. I’m loving things.

Morik was definitely feeling the Royal Guard's attacks now. Blood coated his fur, but it was too late to run now. Well, maybe not, but Morik wasn't one for running away. He transformed himself back to his natural form, surprised to find all the punctures and gashes had disappeared.

"You stupid muppet. You deserve what's coming by following the Devil Duke." With a wicked grin, he transformed back into a bear and roared into the Royal Guard's face.

ROUND FOUR

Elysia presses her attack on the royal guardsman, saying "I will end you before I besmirch your name in the streets. Your legacy will be that of a coward who fell to a tiny woman’s blade" with deadly calm as her rapier dances to end his life. The clash and clink of swords is very loud; the royal guardsman is shaken by her grim words, and is barely able to parry her flashing blade with his shorter weapon.

The absorbed light continues to flow forth from Lunea's vessel, Elowin, into everyone except Elysia as extra verve (every PC except Elysia now has 4 temp HP). With one smooth movement, the elf slips her arm out of the shield's straps, slings it across her back with that arm, and flips her bow off of her shoulder with the other. She nocks an arrow to the string and then draws it from her hip quiver in the same movement as she pulls back on the bow. She lets fly the arrow and the last Grayhaven guard (GG4) standing falls back, gurgling, the shaft lodged in his neck. He drops his weapon and staggers around the room before collapsing.
"Thanks, Elowin!" Adran calls, and yanks his dagger out of the fallen guardsman's shoulder, recalling all the years that Elowin would practice her archery while he was disassembling and examining the golem. He springs forward and tries to stab the royal guardsman already pressed by Elysia's attack, sinking the dagger deep into the man's gut.

Beginning to despair, the Royal Guardsman (RG1) outside desperately tries to beat back the barbarian with his shorter blade, to no avail.

Inside, the Royal Guardsman (RG2) with Adran's dagger sticking in his gut attempt to fend off both attackers, but nothing gets past their defenses.

Whirling, hacking, cleaving, Ishi glances over and sees the battered form of his bear friend Morik change and revert to a dwarf. He looks back at the Royal Guardsman, furious, and shatters the short sword with a blow that nearly cuts the Royal Guardsman in half. Ishi wrenches his blade free from the collapsing foe and runs up to support his druid friend just as Morik is finishing his transformation back into a glossy brown bear. The guard captain's eyes boggle slightly, both at the transformation and at the blood-spattered barbarian that confronts him by its side. Where did that dwarf come from? Where did it go? Who is this brute? Gods, the bear is back...and unharmed!

Eozindra, seeing Elowin's deadly handiwork has ended the threat of the last Grayhaven guard in the room, turns to focus her scorn on the Royal Guardsman (RG2) fighting with Elysia and Adran behind the bar. "Bad dog!" she scolds. The Royal Guardsman, already weakened by Adran's dagger in his gut, stiffens with shock and shame as those two simple words, uttered with such ferocity, strike home. He staggers, but keeps his feet and fights on, more from terror than from any hope of apprehending the party.

Out in the street, the guard captain has not come to this realization quite yet. Still confident in his prowess and his past success rate in collaring drunks, toughs, and bravos, he continues fighting, slashing at Morik's jowls and claws with his long blade and trying to slip his short blade into Ishi's ribs to take him out quickly. Morik the bear takes 8 damage (4 from temp).

Despite their combat training, the riderless horses whicker uneasily at the smell of blood, the clash of blades, and the roaring of the bear.

ROUND FIVE BEGINS

As the fifth round of combat begins, only one royal guardsman (RG2) and the guard captain remain in opposition to the party, actively fighting for their lives. Fearing a group of heavily armed and alert adventurers, the Duke has fled in his carriage but could still be caught on horseback...or the horses could be used to get to the castle dungeons before the Duke can get there. Elysia and Eozindra have the map that Tykus slipped to them just before he was killed, which Findal may be able to decipher. Elysia and Adran are engaged in melee with the Royal Guardsman, while Ishi and Morik are locked in hand-to-hand with the guard captain.
[ +- ] Lucky Copper Inn
Elysia continues to slash and stab at the ashen-faced royal guardsman, who manages to barely turn the dancing blade away from his body each time...but his energy is clearly flagging.
Elowin's eyes flash with the glow of a harvest moon, and the sound of a deep, bass bell rings out in the room. It is the royal guardsman's death knell. He drops his weapon and grasps his ears with a shriek and then collapses into a ball, whimpering and broken. The spirit of Lunea dims the light even further as the twilight proceeds to full night in this early morning; those within the range get 8 temp HP.
Adran twists his dagger out of the man's gut, turns and runs for the door. He smiles at Elowin in gratitude, then winds up and flings his dagger over her shoulder at the guard captain that Ishi and Morik are fighting. The dagger clatters in the street, glittering in the sunlight out of Lunea's twilight zone.
Ishi presses his attack, but the guard captain is barely able to turn the heavy blade aside each time.
But this keeps his focus enough that he misses the swipe from Morik's claws, and he is raked savagely by the bear's heavy blow.
Eozindra slips past Elowin and exits the Lucky Copper Inn; the riderless horses shake their heads uneasily as the noise of battle continues, but then Eozindra's mellifluous voice calms them somewhat, even as the meaning of the words attempt to quail the guard captain's resolve. But he is made of sterner stuff, is this captain.

Long years has he served the city of Grayhaven, and his sense of duty is deeply ingrained. Well does he realize what the appearance of this latest, dazzlingly blonde adventurer means: the men that went in the back have also failed, and he is the lone bulwark against these violent reprobates and his lord and master, the latest of the rulers that he has served, Duke Dain Draymore, the regent of all the Greenwold until the Queen comes of age. He has sworn to protect his kingdom, and he is resigned to give the co-ruler of that kingdom every protection he can, even if costs him his life.

The guard captain attacks Morik twice while he continues to fend off (what he mistakenly believes is) the lesser threat of Ishi with his shortsword. Morik takes 9 points of slashing damage.

Round Five continues

ROUND SIX

Spitting on the corpse in front of her, Elysia quickly checks him over, snatching up anything she finds on him that might help her in her new goal. She sees the longbow (too unwieldy for her, but might be worth something), a hip quiver of arrows fletched with grey and black goose feathers (others could use these to refill their quivers), and the well-made short sword with the insignia of Grayhaven set in the hilt.
OOC:
The other Royal Guardsman is similarly equipped, and any PC can salvage any of that gear if they wish to take the time.
Yanking her dagger out of the door frame, Elysia moves swiftly out of the building and mounts one of the horses still on the front lawn. Looking at Eozindra, she yells, "Zus, meet me where they're keeping our new companion." With that, she nudges the horse into a gallop with her heel, taking off for the jail in the quickest route she knows. She'll definitely get there before the Duke in his slower carriage!
OOC:
I'd like to get an Animal Handling check from Elysia. Not to succeed/fail, but just to establish how fast a pace she are able to set with this new-to-her mount.
Elowin moves out of the front door of the Lucky Copper Inn and as she does so, Morik and Ishi are both covered by Lunea's Twilight Santuary. Elowin lifts her reliquary and again the sound of doom rings in the captains ears. The guard captain however doesn't have the time to ponder its meaning and ignores the sound, as the revitalized bear and barbarian are fighting to spill his lifeblood.

Adran runs after Elysia and, hearing the tail end of her calling out to Eozindra, he makes a quick decision and grabs the reins of one of the other horses. "Don't worry!" he calls to Eozindra, [b]"I'm going to be her back-up!" Then he tries to ride off in pursuit of the half-elf.

Ishi's heavy blow staggers the guard captain, who smiles once last time in defiance, and then starts to say...

...his speech is cut off as the bear crushes the guard captain's ribs with his claw, then bites his face off. The bear gives a grunting roar of triumph.

Eozindra wheels around and chooses a horse as she runs up to it, bounding on to its back with an effortless grace that courtiers and ladies-in-waiting would envy. She takes off after Elysia and Adran, quickly gaining on them.

The sun is rising over the tallest buildings on the ridge overlooking the bay, and the citizens of Grayhaven are busy conducting their morning business as the morning continues...but then the normal morning routines are broken by the thunderous clatter of steel-shod hooves! On horseback, the party tears through streets too narrow for carriage travel, hoping to rescue Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle and the unnamed old tiefling from the dungeons before the Duke can arrive and organize a better-prepared group to defend the jail and hunt for the dangerous outlaws (the party). Citizens leap for cover as the mounted adventurers careen past. Elowin has quickly pulled ahead of everyone else, but holds back a little so that she can follow Eozindra's lead. Ishi is close behind. Elysia, knowing that Zin knows the way to the Castle Dungeon, hangs back to help the slower Adran and Morik navigate the shortest route. As they race through the streets, Eozindra, Ishi, and Adran pull ahead of the others. Minutes pass, and the sense of Lunea's blessing fades away. The party will arrive in two groups, first one, then later, the second three.
OOC:
I'm basing the velocity of each character on their Animal Handling checks. If any of the characters have riding proficiency, please remind me and I'll adjust accordingly.

Morik, Ishi, Elowin, and Adran do not know their way through the city well enough to know the best route to win the race to the dungeons, but they will definitely arrive first if they stay with either Elysia or Eozindra. But some of the pace depends on Morik. The bear form is fast, but still considerably slower than a horse. If Morik remains in bear form and Elysia/Adran wait for him, they will arrive two full rounds after the others. If Morik dispenses with his Wild Shape and mounts a horse, the three of them could arrive only one round after the others, but Morik wouldn't be able to Wild Shape again today. If Elysia/Adran leave the druid behind, they can arrive one round after the others, but Morik might be much later, depending on his ability to track where the rest of the party went. Which do you choose to do?

Eozindra, Elowin, and Ishi clatter from a narrow, cobblestoned street into a small open square. The castle wall comprises the north side of that square; a broad avenue feeds into the square from the south, with shorter buildings to the east and west and taller buildings to the south, further away from the castle wall. A long, low building sits some distance from the wall. It is the holding area for prisoners that have been detained by the city, the Duchy, or the Kingdom before trial, after which they are released or sentenced. It is called the "Castle Dungeons" because it is the jail that people see and come back from; whether there are more permanent, traditional dungeons actually within the castle, tales do not tell.

There is no sign of the Duke's carriage, which suggests that the party beat the regent back to the jail. There are two Grayhaven Guards stationed outside the open door into the building, however. One seems to be asleep, and the other is reeling around as if drunk. But as the three heroes rein to a halt at a safe distance, they see that the drunken one is trying to reach something on his back...a crossbow bolt that juts out from between his shoulder blades. His hands bat weakly at the air, and then the guard's eyes roll up and he collapses onto his face.
[ +- ] The Unseen
The group hears muttered voices from the open doorway. With his keen hearing, Ishi is just able to make them out:
"It's not here, I tell you!"
"But the gnome was the contact, and he's the one the Duke captured!"
"Then maybe he knows something?"
"Yeah, let's bring him."

Everyone, please roll initiative.
OOC:
If I don't hear otherwise from you, per my previous post I'll assume that Morik has remained in his Wild Shape bear form and Elysia, Adran, and Morik will arrive together on round three.
OOC:
Edit: Here's the rest of round one:
Ishi hears that bit of the conversation within the jail, and announces "They have the gnome, I'm going in!" As Ishi swings down from the dead guard's horse, he looks back gratefully to see his aunty Elowin swing down, too. Eozindra indulges in a genteel facepalm at the rashness of bulling in without the others. As the barbarian and cleric approach the guards they did not kill and the open front door, a voice within says in elvish: "I heard horses - the Duke may be back!"
"Almost done; keep 'im busy."
A cloaked figure steps out of the doorway, face hidden in the shadow of the hood except for the large eyes, which widen at the sight of the two armed heroes running toward the door. "Kirash!" the figure says, and then disappears from view as a sphere of darkness envelops it and the door. "His friends are here! Slave, attack them!"

With all appropriate deference, Ishi cautions his elder: ""I think the drow and the 'slave' can see us already. we should back off a little and spread out ready for what comes." as he moves north, away from the edge of the darkness. Elowin, for her part, remains where she is and tries to talk with the darkness, addressing the point where she'd seen the cloaked figure. "We are not with the Duke. We just want to rescue our friend before he gets here! The Duke just tried to kill us a moment ago!"

The hope in this appeal to a common cause is shattered a moment later when there is a shifting in the air in front of Elowin. The vague outline of a shaggy long limb with sharp claws on the end appears, transparent in the morning light, as a creature that was invisible swings at her face! Elowin takes 7 lightning damage!

Elysia, cantering on the dead man's horse as she leads Adran and Morik through the winding city streets, is reassured that Eozindra took the most efficient route - the route that she is taking, naturally - because of all the perturbed people who are gathering up their belongings that were scattered when her sister came through moments earlier. Inured to the shock of almost getting trampled, the citizens just duck into doorways again, or lean against the walls on either side. But when they see Morik loping along, apparently chasing the horses, there are shrieks of surprise and fear! One person laughs hysterically, because for a second he thought he saw a tiny newt clinging to the brown bear's ear!

Eozindra dismounts, drawing her rapier with an unconscious flourish, and touches the wire in her hair as soon as she sees the horses and bear round the corner at the far end of the alley. The bard's magic message reaches Elysia's ears: "Definitely trouble, be prepared. We didn’t kill the guards but whoever did is still here."

based mainty on the previous encounter with with the undead controlled by the drow who were killing indiscriminately. Ishi knows it is not wise to base actions on prejudice.

Rounding the corner, she hears the message. Knowing it’s a straight shot from where they are, she relates to her companions, "They encountered trouble! It’s straight ahead, be ready." With that, she faces her destination, focused on her game plan.

Morik was running out of breath. He might be in bear form, but whose idea was it to run so much? A bear was no long distance runner, and now there was more trouble. He roared again, and rushed straight ahead as instructed.

The Unseen: Round Two

Elowin steps back away from the sparkling claws, assuring the creature (and hopefully those in the darkness) "We are not your enemies. We just want the people."
"I'm ready with the gnome. Let's go."
"Oof; I can't see a...She says they want the people."
The first voice raises in volume as the speaker addresses the party: "You're welcome to the people! Everybody we left in there! We'll be out of your way in a moment!"

Ishi tightens his grip on the sword and warns: "Be careful auntie, I don't trust the drow."

The muttered voices continued, sounding slightly out of breath. "Did they just say we're drow??"
"That's torn it." Then, a little louder: "Excuse me? Hello? We're not drow..."
"...whatever those are..."
"Right! Drough? Droo? Ha-ha. I don't even know what that is! We're just everyday murderers!"
"You make sure to tell the Duke that when he catches you with all these dead bodies, right?"
"...still, it's better if they can't talk, right?"

Elowin notices a flicker at the edge of the sphere of darkness, a bit above where it bisects the roof of the building, and with a muttered "TohrtandStaliandrawtheeye!" (said all in one word), a spell descends on Elowin, Eozindra, and the three horses.
Elowin and Eozindra must attempt DC11 DEX saving throws.
The two heroes twist and sidestep as a wave of arcane energy surges past them. The horses snort and whinny as each mount suddenly gleams with a shining purple radiance.

The glowing creature steps forward toward Elowin...and disappears from view, fading out as it moves.

Elysia, Adran, Morik, and Jeffery continue racing down the alleyway toward the enormous black ball that serves as the backdrop to their view of Eozindra.

Eozindra, for her part, looks defiantly at the black sphere and declares: "We are saving our friend one way or another so you really should just stop this all now."

Elowin can tell the spell not by assessing the arcane, but by observing the results: each of the horses is now glowing bright purple, which means that the spell is a version of the familiar Faerie Fire evocation.

The Unseen, Round Three

Round three of this combat begins. There are at least two somewhat-talkative aggressors in the darkness, Elowin saw movement on the roof, and there's a monster that attacked Elowin on the street but then turned invisible just moments ago. The horses are glowing purple and not happy about it, and Elysia, Adran, and Morik start the round having just arrived.
[ +- ] The Unseen, start of round 3
Elowin and Ishi look at each other; Elowin says "Ishi, give me a leg up to the roof," and then sprints toward the jail. Being less armored and naturally fleet of foot, Ishi is generally much faster, but he takes a moment to process what she's said and gets a later start (first part of Elowin's action, the rest happens on Ishi's turn as he catches up).
Starting the round on his horse, Adran quickly dismounts and rushes straight ahead, into the darkness, finding the wall of the jail with his shield. Feeling his way quickly along toward where the door must be, his feet bump into some kind of obstacle: what he will eventually learn is the limp body of the guard pierced by crossbow bolts, but right now is just something to step over. Adran cannot see anything.
Elowin is too close to the jail to see on the roof, and both Adran and Ishi's views are blocked by the darkness, but Eozindra, Elysia, and Morik see a cloaked humanoid figure straighten up out of the darkness on the roof (standing fully upright, the darkness comes up to his waist), aim a small crossbow at them, and pull the release trigger. The bows jumps with a soft twang, and the figure ducks back down into the sphere! They see a second cloaked head emerge from the darkness a little further back - it pops up just enough to see over the edge of the roof, and calls out "Slave - keep them from following us!" There is a shimmering in the air and a glowing blue shape appears in the street in front of Eozindra, and the head visible on the roof steps back out of view of the people on the street.
Ishi sprints toward Elowin. As he skirts the edge of the sphere of blackness, a claw lashes out at Ishi, from the invisible creature trying to eviscerate him. Reaching Elowin, Ishi cradles his hands, Elowin stomps her boot down, saying "There must be an entrance of a sort up there," and Ishi nods and heaves upward, tossing Elowin up like a caber. She grabs the eaves of the jail's roof and pulls herself up, right on the edge of the sphere.
As she is hefting herself fully onto the roof, Elowin can see the dark fabric covering part of a hunched figure's back sticking out above the curve of the black sphere right in front of her. It is bent over, only its back visible above the blackness. Further to the west, a cloaked figure is walking away, further to the west on the roof. "Hopefully we can keep them talking while we get away with the gnome..." it is saying (only Elowin is close enough to understand the Elvish, but the others can all hear that someone is talking on the roof).
"I'm hurrying," the hunched figure near Elowin replies, "He's not exactly light, you know. You could help..."
The standing cloaked figure turns back and sees Elowin regaining her feet just as she recognizes that it is a dark elf!
"Vartus!" he calls a warning, there is a gasp, and the exposed back disappears as the closer figure drops down fully into the black sphere.
The glowing arm with the claws that slashed at Ishi previously retracts back into the sphere, as the creature turns to attack Adran in the darkness!
OOC:
Adran, Ishi, and Elowin each used their moves and actions to get where they are, but if any of them have bonus actions or reactions that they want to and can use, let me know and I'll adjust accordingly. For the rest - Elysia, Eozindra, and Morik - you may alter your original intent based on these developments.
[ +- ] The Unseen, middle of round three
Elysia runs toward the jail, yelling "Ishi!" The barbarian has just flung Elowin up onto the roof and doesn't have time to reset to hoist the half-elf, so she leaps for the eaves herself...and smacks into the side of the building. She's left hanging by her hands from the edge of the roof.
OOC:
On your next turn, if you're still hanging from the roof, you can take half your move to pull yourself up onto the roof, with no additional check needed.
Eozindra mocks the voices for their miscasting of the spell that has highlighted the horses. "I mean, they look very pretty now, thank you! Why don't you come on out so we can talk this through?" She presses her knuckles to her hips in a casual posture, the unsheathed blade of her rapier pointing behind her in a non-offensive stance, as she addresses the glowing figure that she can see a few feet away from her. "Sounds like you don't care for the Duke much either so we have that in common. Maybe there's other things we can agree on." The figure shimmers but provides no reply, not even to move to attack.

Morik rushes past the glowing figure and into the dark, sniffing mightily. He reaches the northeast corner of the building and immediately senses Adran ahead of him; there is also a lingering, unfamiliar odor of moldy earth and root vegetables. Underneath that is a faint trace of ink, pipeweed, and magpie droppings: Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle is clearly nearby.

Some suggestions and some answers to explicit/implicit questions, as well as some clarifying questions of my own:

The peak of the roof is 12' up, but the lowest part of the roof - the north and south edges - are just 9' off of the ground. A character could, with an Athletics check, run, jump, grab the edge, and pull themselves up. Or one could give another a "leg up."
The voices speaking in Elvish give some indication of the location of their speakers; characters could prepare a ranged attack triggered by the next time one of the voices speaks.
runekyndig says:
Elowin tries to find another entrance to the jail, other than going through the darkness.
OOC:
Elowin didn't see another entrance on the north or east sides of the building when she was walking up to it. There might be a back or side entrance in the south or west walls. Does she head around to the south side, or go further to the west side? As an alternative, Elowin did notice that movement on the roof - there's something or someone up there, that popped briefly out of the sphere to aim that spell.
Kilikina says:
Does darkvision counter that blackness or will I need to step inside it to find out?
OOC:
While your eyes do adjust more when they're out of the light, you can still usually see some distance into a dark area (such as a cave). Here, you can't see into it at all: it's magical darkness, and you can tell that your darkvision would not be able to pierce it. You'd have to rely on your other senses, or dispel the effect somehow.
grifter730 says:
Morik the Bear ... could smell them in there.
OOC:
Yes, if Morik were to enter the darkness, he would have ADV on Perception checks to detect people/tangible objects in the dark.
grifter730 says:
At the very least, he would move to hug the wall so he’s not bunched up with the rest of the group.
OOC:
Which wall do you want to move to? Are you moving south along the west wall of the building you're adjacent to now, or are you moving to the jail with the sphere of darkness?
MaJunior says:
Adran will ... place his shield against the left wall and draw his dagger before heading into the blackness.
OOC:
I think I know the answer, but just to be certain that I don't get it wrong, does this mean...
the shield is on his left arm, intending to touch the north wall, as he's moving west toward where the others can tell you the door was?
or
the shield is on his right arm, intending to touch the east wall, as he's moving south?
Jun 20, 2024 2:50 pm
OOC:
You're right correct. Shield is on his left arm.

Morik rushed up to the wall on the right side. If Morik would have Advantage to detect people in the dark, would that negate the disadvantage of fighting in the dark, and thus he can attack without disadvantage?
Jun 21, 2024 1:57 am
Eozindra observes the faintly glowing horses and snickers briefly before addressing the mass of dark obscuration. "I mean, they look very pretty now, thank you! Why don't you come on out so we can talk this through?" She presses her knuckles to her hips in a casual posture, the unsheathed blade of her rapier pointing behind her in a non-offensive stance. grifter730 says:
If Morik would have Advantage to detect people in the dark, would that negate the disadvantage of fighting in the dark, and thus he can attack without disadvantage?
OOC:
Not exactly. If he succeeds on his Perception check on smelling an opponent in the blackness, then attacks on that target will be without ADV or DISADV. So it'll still be two rolls: one for Perception, one for attack (well, OK, it's probably three for attacks). If that first one (the Perception check with ADV to smell the foe) succeeds, then subsequent attacks on that target will be straight rolls...and will continue to be straight rolls until the situation changes somehow (the target escapes, the target dies, Morik ends his Wild Shape). Note that, if the darkness lifts, Morik's sense of smell will not then confer ADV on attacks. I hope that makes sense.

The Unseen - Round Four
On the roof, Elowin is face-to-face with a cloaked drow, who is looking very uncomfortable, both for being spotted and for being in the morning sunlight. Somewhere close by, another drow lurks in the shallow part of the sphere of magical darkness that extends up and out of the roof. Elowin calls out to the drow: "Lets talk before blood is spilled. In Lunea's name, we just want our people. What is it that you want? Be quick, the fool duke is on his way." The drow twitches at the mention of Lunea, but he's happy to talk while he's loading his crossbow. "We want the treasure for the glory of our Queen." "Our Queen!" agrees a murmured reply from the darkness nearby. The drow she can see continues: "The soothsayers told that a powerful artifact had been found in Grayhaven, by a sage named Tykus. We've spent too much time in the open air" - here he shudders - "to give up now. Tykus is dead, but the Duke took his body and his map. While the Duke is away, we've come to take the map...but there is no map here. Only Tykus' confidant, this idiotic gnome. We're taking him with us; you're welcome to everyone else."

Elowin responds: "The map have been found and is out of the Dukes hands!" When she sees the determination on the drow's face to attack the party redoubled, she tries to negotiate. "I don't have it on me. You will return the gnome to us alive and well, if you want a chance at the map. At twilight, outside the city walls by the big oak tree?"

Down on the ground, in the sphere of magical darkness, Adran is being attacked by an unseen assailant with long, sharp claws charged with lightning.
[ +- ] The Unseen, start of round four
Adran blindly attacks the darkness, but his dagger tastes no flesh, nor anything else.
The glowing humanoid creature by Eozindra floats away to one side.
OOC:
@Redamancy, you may use Eozindra's reaction to make an opportunity attack, if you wish.
"That means you have the map, or you know where it is." The cloaked drow hidden in the darkness stands up again and looses a crossbow bolt at Elowin, then ducks back down into the darkness. "Either way, taking you is better than just taking the gnome." The cloaked drow she was talking to also uses his crossbow at the cleric, then he moves back along the roof, reloading. Frustrated by the sunlight, he calls out. "Slave, get her!"
OOC:
As far as the drow are part of the combat, I'll point out that they have DISADV because they are fighting in daylight...which vulnerability would be known by all the elf and half-elf characters.
As the bolts are flying, Ishi takes a few steps back and then takes a running leap, easily grabbing the edge of the roof and pulling himself up between Elowin and the point where Elysia is hanging from the eaves. Before he can help her, Elysia kips up onto the roof, drawing her daggers and flinging them through the space where the visible drow stood. The daggers clatter on the roof tiles and slide, tumbling, to the street below. "Maybe it was you who hurt my friend and spelled my companion. You’ve made an enemy for that." Elysia flourishes, gesturing so that the drow can clearly see the spider ring she wears. The drow's eyes widen beneath his hood. "THEY'RE WITH HOUSE A'KALI!" He grins, a mixture of fanaticism and sadism. "Now we have to kill you all."
OOC:
Elysia will be able to retrieve her two daggers easily after the encounter.
Eozindra sees her sister on the roof and calls encouragement to her. "Don’t let them get away, zus!" (Elysia now has 1d6 Bardic Inspiration). Then the bard rushes into the darkness. She hears Adran in the darkness, and the two of them hear each other. Recognizing her charming perfume, Adran knows that she's not an attacker. Eozindra puts a hand reassuringly on his distinctively-armored shoulder as he continues to stab and slash toward the door.
Morik the bear charges into the darkness, immediately smelling Adran (oil, metal, and leather) and Eozindra (wood, steel, and flowers). There is a lingering smell of the drow (rot, stone, and sour sweat), Findal (ink, parchment, and bird droppings), and a strange smell of the creature (ozone and death)...but all of those scents are stronger the higher he lifts his muzzle. Morik rears up on his hind legs and tries to bite at the strange smell, but it rises beyond his jaws. He swipes with his claws and feels his attack connect. But it is clear that the drow, Findal, and the unseen creature have now gone to the roof.

The map have been found and is out of the Dukes hands!
The drow open his mouth to speak, but she cuts him off.
I don't have it on me. You will return the gnome to us alive and well, if you want a chance at the map.

To accommodate the drows sunny disposition she offers. At twilight, outside the city walls by the big oak tree?
This should give them time to retreat gracefully and return when the sun is down. And it will give Elowin and the others time to study and copy the map.
OOC:
She readies an action, to dodge if they turn violent.

Oof, sorry y’all. Had a busy weekend doing home improvement stuffs.
Heaving a dramatic sigh, Eozindra calls after her sister "Don’t let them get away, zus!"

The bard dashes to the edge of the hovering void of darkness and changes to a careful pace as she steps into concealment, following Morik and Adran. She gropes blindly for foe or friend in a blind state, hoping her hand will find a fluffy body or armored back to help her orient within the space.

Bardic inspiration Elysia. Won’t help with a Nat 1 but maybe with something else.

Not sure what to roll for blindly trying to figure out the space.

Feeling oriented slightly in the darkness having located Adran, Eozindra exudes a frustrated shout and swings for the creature moving from her reach. "I don't like doing this!" she confesses, knowing that her training never afforded her much in the way of physical ability. Rather than try to find another target in the dark, she pursues the creature and swings again.

Bears are great climbers, and Morik-the-bear is MUCH taller than Morik-the-dwarf. Make an Athletics check, DC11, to reach up your claws and climb up onto the 9' roof in the darkness.

"For striking a priestess of Lunea, in service of peace between elven kind. I hereby curse you and your kin." Elowin sings the curse in Elvish as she lunges forward into the darkness and attacks the unseen drow hiding in the curve of the dark sphere. "The peace denied you under the sun, is now denied under the moon as well!" Her blade bites deep into flesh (dealing 5 damage), and Lunea's power flows down her arm and down the blade into the flesh, setting up a building resonance ready to explode with concussive force should the foe move away from her. Anyone looking down into the street would see the purple lights illuminating the horses wink out of existence.
Making sure to avoid his companions, Adran stabs into the darkness, but the drow have already climbed up onto the roof. He sheathes his dagger and grabs onto Morik's shaggy fur.
The two cloaked drow desperately try to stop the flow of curses with their crossbows...missing once again.
Ishi wades into the darkness by Elowin's side (their waists and legs disappear) and slashes down with his sword, hitting the hidden drow crouching in the sphere again, dealing 9 damage.
Something - an invisible creature - attempts to strike at Elowin from behind! But Lunea is with her cleric, and the claws swish through the empty air. For the moment, the creature is visible: a shaggy, glowing blue humanoid form with long claws on its hands.
"We shall see." Elysia bows, then dashes across the roof and lunge, stabbing the cloaked drow for 7 piercing damage!
Eozindra swings her rapier in the darkness, the blade whistling through the air, careful to avoid both bear and elf. She, too, grabs onto Morik's shaggy fur.
With a grunt at the extra weight and a scrabbling of tiles in the darkness, Morik stands, digs his claws into the terra cotta tiles, and hauls himself (and his two riders) up onto the roof.

The Unseen, round six

Elowin attacks, but even with the thunderous might of Lunea flowing through her, she is unable to land a solid blow on the drow crouching down in the darkness.
As soon as he feels the bear ascend onto the roof, Adran dismounts from Morik and moves up the slope, emerging out of the darkness head first like a merman walking onto a shore out of the ocean.
The two drow attack, one frantically reloading his crossbow and trying to skewer Elysia, the other lifting just the top of his head out of the black sphere to send one last quarrel in Elowin's direction. Each dark elf shrieks in fear and frustration as their shots miss, cursing the sun.
Taking advantage of the sound and the sight of the top of the drow's head, Ishi slices across with his greatsword, cleanly slicing off the top of the hidden drow's skull! The glow on the horses blinks off as the drow dies.
The ghostly glowing blue creature is Stunned at his Master's death, and takes no action this round, not even to turn invisible again.
Elysia bats the crossbow of the drow on the roof out of his hands and sinks her blade into his gut. She grabs him and pulls him close, saying "Tell me what why you want to steal our prisoner. Tell me what you have against the house my ring represents. Tell me the information I need, and I’ll let you live." But any answers won't be forthcoming, she realizes: the drow has already died. With his death, the sphere of darkness disappears, revealing the rest of the dead drow and the expertly-bound and unconscious body of Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle lying next to it. Elysia lets go of the corpse, and he slides backwards off of her blade and slumps into a heap on the roof.
Eozindra says "Thanks, buddy," to Morik, and leaps off of the bear's back to attack the Stunned creature. Despite it's stunned state, the blade does not do any significant damage.
Morik, however, lopes forward and savages the creature, smashing it down to the roof with his weight, digging into it with his claws, and gets a firm grip on it with his jaws and tears it in half. The enslaved spirit, released from its bondage, whispers a "Thank you," which everyone in the party hears in their minds. The sundered parts of the glowing body melt into shimmering energy, which wafts around, looking for a way to bestow a blessing on an item. It drifts onto Eozindra, sinks into her leather armor, and disappears.

Findal

Less than a minute has passed since the party first arrived at the jail. With the combat ended, the party is able to revive Findal (on the principle that it will be easier to get down off of the roof with him awake). As you untie the gnome, you see that he is shaken, suffering two levels of exhaustion, and very nervous about staying anywhere near here.

The two drow corpses have hand crossbows, short swords, dark attire, and no other equipment.

But as the party makes its way back to the ground, it's clear to all of you that multiple groups - at a minimum you know of the Duke and these drow - are after Tykus' map. Findal needs rest, and he urges retreat before the Duke arrives. Findal asserts "The Duke will want to recapture me; he'll view me as an escaped captive." He runs a shaky hand through his beard. "For some reason, he thinks that I was involved in the research; maybe he read some of our letters. But we've got to find a safe place away from here! All this has happened in daylight, and any moment now an alarm will be raised!" Then another thought occurs to him: "What about Peppercorn? Is she alright?"
Jun 30, 2024 3:53 pm
Realizing the scholar was alright, Sia snatched up a crossbow and a set of dark attire, perfect for sneakery or blending in. She listens to Findral as she stares out from the roof at the parts of the city she can see. She’s a bit melancholy to leave, she’d liked the size and all of the goings on as it made picking pockets easier with the bustle. She hadn’t even gotten to visit that purveyor of decadent wares…

Still, escaping is her forte. She’s almost done planning a route through the city and a way when she hears the question. Looking down at him, she asks, "Who is Peppercorn?"

"Hey if no one objects. could i pick up a set of dark attire? looks good for hunting in the city." He asked shyly
Jun 30, 2024 8:59 pm
Upon hearing the disembodied voice express gratitude, Eozindra glances around herself at the scattering essence with wide-eyed wonder. Her hands drift to her chest as the spirit imbues its thanks physically upon her and she lets out an empathetic sigh, whispering "You’re welcome" in reply.

She turns back to the group after a moment of reverence to the parted spirit. "We can’t stay here a moment longer." She stoops to collect the other drow’s equipment, folds the attire neatly and holds it out to Ishi with a bowed head. "Does anyone need this?" She asks, holding aloft the other hand crossbow. "If not, I’d be very appreciative. Looks like things are going to be a bit messy from now on."

While awaiting response, she glances over the edge of the roof to asses the situation of the horses below.
OOC:
Are the horses still there? Do the sisters perhaps know of an underground locations within the city in which to hide, based on their time spent here and the connections they made upon arrival? Or at least, the fastest route out of the city from their current location. Also, does the armor require attunement?

Morik stood on his hind legs and roared in bestial triumph! The roar died meekly as he realized the bloodlust had a hold on him, and he calmed himself down. He went back to the others, sniffed at Findal and motioned with his head to tell the gnome to get on him.
OOC:
Unless there was a horse for everyone, it'd be best if Morik stayed in bear form. He's ready to go.
Jul 1, 2024 7:18 am
Peppercorn, your pet crow is still in the inn. She eyes the local girls Eozindra and Elysia. Perhaps someone can sneak in and get her and what other stuff we have left behind there.

We have get out of town or at least out of sight for now.
Jul 1, 2024 7:24 am
Knowing she has the skills to do so, and possibly a slight ulterior motive to sneak through the marketplace, Elysia offers, "I do not mind being that person. I desire to make a quick stop on my way out of town anyways and I still need to free that poor tiefling below us before the duke arrives." Realizing the duke is on his way, she collects her daggers and makes her way off the roof and inside to start completing her task list of things to do before leaving town.

Morik again nodded at Findal to get on him. His bear form wasn't as fast as a horse, but Ishi was right, given a lead he could certainly take Findal out and meet up with the others later.

"I would not mind the hand crossbow, but go ahead," Adran says dismissively. You get the impression he's drawn to the mechanisms involved in its crafting.

"You know... now I'm really curious what was in the box we found," the tinkerer muses aloud as he slides back down off the roof. "Ah well. We became fugitives in record time. I feel like we're owed a reward or something. A plaque at least." He assists Findal in mounting Morik the bear. "If you think it's safe to split, we can take Fin out of town while you all get our stuff? Wouldn't mind having someone who knows the city though -- I'd rather avoid getting lost again."

With the sincerity of a child, Eozindra holds the crossbow to Adran. "I’m sure it won’t be the only one we come across." She then turns to the group. "I have my bag with me. And the, y’know…" she nods suggestively from the gnome to her satchel wherein the parchment is concealed. "I can lead us out of here."

Turning to Elysia, the bard takes her sister’s hands. In this moment, the pale girl’s childlike enthusiasm has been replaced with the wash of responsible older sibling as she makes rapid decisions and hands out orders to her younger partner in crime. "Can you take the others to gather their belongings? We can meet where we camped the night before we arrived. I will call to you once we arrive and every few minutes thereafter until you respond."
OOC:
I’m sort of presuming we had a location off the path outside of the city where we took time to rest before coming into the city proper. Since we would’ve taken time to make our presence known anywhere and Sia would have scouted it first.
Jul 3, 2024 8:22 am
"Of course, just be safe." It never mattered to Elysia that Zin was older, she still worried for her sister. She still tried not to let it show too much, she’d never suffocate her. "If you forget the things I’ve taught you and get caught, I’ll be very cross," she added.
OOC:
What about the old tiefling? Both Sia and I would feel bad leaving him to the Duke’s ministrations if our actions are going to cause him more problems.

Findal says: "They seemed to think that Tykus had some valuable information, but I only saw him after he was dead. What happened?"
OOC:
Answers to various questions:
- The horses are still here where you dismounted from them.
- Peppercorn, Findal’s belongings, and any gear that the members of the party weren’t actively wearing/carrying when they were sitting down for drinks and food at the table (backpacks, maybe also a pair of boots?) are all still at the Inn.
- Those who take the hand crossbows find them easy to use, but they have special little bolts (exactly matching the ones Adran examined and kept from earlier). Each drow has six bolts remaining. In addition to dealing 1d6 piercing damage, a bolt hitting a living creatureforces them to succeed on a CON save or fall asleep. The dark clothing consists of tight-fitting leather jerkins, armwraps, breeches, and black cloaks. It takes but a moment to remove the cloaks, but the other pieces will take more time (~2 minutes, since you’re struggling with a dead body). What do you take?
- Some or all of the PCs can stay to free other prisoners, but it will also take time. Similarly, some or all of the party can return to the Inn (with stealth or speed) to retrieve items. Chances are the Duke’s forces will come to the jail first, but he may dispatch more troops to the Inn to detain you once he finds that Findal’s escaped. But getting out of the city will be difficult; Elysia knows places to hide in Grayhaven, but not really ways to get out of the city secretly. If you want to leave the city, there are the gates or scaling the huge wall, both of which would likely attract attention.

With those extra details, what would you like to do (and in what order).

OOC:
Based on the update, I’d adjust my "meet me here" directive to one of the hiding places known to Sia. I don’t think we can get out of the city immediately without drawing attention and need time to plan an escape. I think it’s important to get Findal out ASAP which Zin can head up. If anyone wants to stay and get the tiefling before gathering the belongings at the inn, that’s great. With the shared local knowledge between Zin/Sia I feel like splitting up with one of them in each group is the best chance of accomplishing all that.

When it proves difficult to remove the black attire from a dead body, Ishi decides against wearing them. He also does not want to be mistaken for a drow (and the clothes are covered with blood which doesn't male a good first impression) . He mounts the gray horse he considers his own and says"I think I could find my way back to the inn (wanderer feature) and bring back a lot of our stuff, Or is there anything else Aunty thinks I should do?

OOC:
Adran will want to release the elder tiefling in particular, to apologize that he was caught up in this and then explaining that because he is escaping he may need a place to hide or his family may need to get out of the city.

If he is injured, Adran will cast Cure Wounds (twice if needed) and help him grab anything he may need -- boots, a cloak, a cane/staff, etc.

Essentially trying to make sure he's alright, and can function on his own. Beyond that, Adran intends to stay with Findal.
Jul 5, 2024 12:24 am
OOC:
Elysia will help Adran free the old tiefling with apologies for him as well. She’ll also take a crossbow and the dark cloak instead of the attire, but she’ll see Adran’s eyes on it and give him the crossbow and bolts saying it’s a "thanks" for helping with the old man.

Any gear the rest of the team don’t loot, she’ll snatch it up as well before leading those who want to sneak back to the inn. Naturally, she’ll tell Zin where the hideout to meet up at is so they can go separate ways. Although considering she has the map in her backpack, I think Elysia would’ve had that with her at breakfast, not wanting it out of sight.

Elysia and Eozindra both offer hand crossbows to Adran. Ishi calms the horses (still a little unnerved by Morik the bear) and mounts up. While Eozindra gives some "suggestions" to Elysia, Adran and Elowin enter the jail. There are two more dead guards inside and several cells. Elysia enters while Eozindra mounts a horse. Elowin looks on the corpses for keys while Adran inspects the lock and starts to pull out his tools to disassemble it. But by then Elysia has picked the lock, releasing the tiefling and several older gnomes. They are upset - freaked out from detention, questioning, the sudden darkness, and the sight of their jailers, dead - but physically unharmed. Adran removes the spear point from a shaft and gives it to the tiefling, who accepts it with poor grace. Elysia retrieves a couple of daggers and then hops in the saddle.

Eozindra leads Morik away to the bolt hole. Elysia and Ishi lead Elowin, Findal, and Adran back to the inn. As the two groups arrive at their destinations, they hear horns sounding in the distance: alarums blown when the Duke or his men arrived at the Castle Dungeons. Elysia sneaks into the inn first; they were fast enough, and more guards have not arrived. The inn’s staff have apparently fled, and thieves picking over the bodies of the guards outside scatter at the approach of mounted people (the heroes). No one has yet ventured inside; the party is able to retrieve their items. Findal has a LOT of stuff compared to the rest of you: a trunk full of books, a trunk full of sundries, and a trunk of clothes and valuables. Mostly he’s excited to be reunited with Peppercorn. He digs through the chests to pull out two books, a large pouch, and a small rucksack. "It pains me to leave the rest, but if I must…"

They leave just ahead of the arrival of a troop of guards, rounding the corner just as what sounds like at least a dozen mounted warriors arrive. Elysia leads the party along a winding route, and eventually has everyone dismount and release the horses as there is nothing the could work as a stable or could conceal all these horses caparisoned in the Duke’s colors. After a few more blocks, Elysia leads them down into an abandoned basement. Eozindra and Morik await them there.

As Findal examines the map and the guards throughout the city are put on high alert, the PCs rest and take stock of the situation. They’re safe here, for the time being. As they consider what to do next, each PC gains inspiration, the benefit of a long rest, and advances to level three!

Oh, Sir Bear, pardon me, if you are a true representative of the Bear totem and not just a druid. I be needing your assistance in creating a bear totem amulet which will further my spiritual growth. If you would allow me to collect some of your fur and it does not change or disappear when you change to another form, then i would be in debt to you, and for example, I could perform a ritual that would allow us to speak more clearly.

Morik snorted and reeled back in shock. You what what WHAT now? I'll show you a spirit totem! He brought his head down to eye level with this strange one and squinted his eyes, glaring at him for several heartbeats.

He snorted, then shrugged, seemingly having made up his mind. He held up his paw for Ishi to pluck some fur. If a bit of fur would help their group, what could it hurt? He'll just have to make sure he keeps an eye on that one. It wouldn't do to let someone who carried his fur around to die, what would that say about him? The man looked hardy and ferocious, they could do well together.

Elysia blinked at the interaction before shaking her head with a quiet laugh. Despite her environment growing up, she’d been around all manner of people, but these two surprised her. They were a level she wasn’t accustomed to, yet found amusing.

She encouraged everyone to get comfortable around her hideout as she pulled the map out of her backpack. Unraveling it, she gestured for Findral to come closer. "This is what your friend was trying to keep from the Duke before he was murdered. What do you make of it?"
Jul 8, 2024 7:08 am
With the party safely ensconced in the temporary shelter of Elysia's bolt hole, Findal examines the map. It takes him some time - he's tired, distraught, and the script is obscure - but eventually he leans back with a sigh and wide eyes. "You say that Tykus said all the realm may depend on you finding it, is that correct?" He rubs a hand over his face. "This is a treasure map, a map that leads to some kind of artifact. You see here? It says..." he peers at the script again, and translates slowly: "...the location of the...abbey...founded to...anoint...yes, anoint is the right word...found to anoint the peace and keep the artifact safe from evil hands." He points to a spot on the map, just a bit to the right of the center. "That's here. There's another bit of text here; it's not clear whether it's the same location or someplace nearby, but I don't understand it. It says simply: 'THOSE BOUND BY THE OATH'...or perhaps 'THE OATHBOUND ONES'"

Findal's eyes glow and he looks at you all expectantly. "Well? Don't you see? The Duke and those drow were both after this map, trying to find this artifact, and they want it badly enough to break laws, steal, and murder to get it. They killed Tykus and detained that old man! Those are evil acts, and I think it's vital that they don't get it...whatever it is." He looks at you all again, moving from face to face. Then he snaps his fingers. "Oh! Maybe you don't see it? Look here, you know the city, yes?" Findal motions to Elysia, Eozindra, and Ishi. He points to different places on the map. "There are a few locations on the map that correspond to places that still exist. Here, 'Arktplach' is an ancient term for Market Place, and 'Cercamarplach' is the ocean front place...these are locations that mark the entrances to ancient tunnels under the old city that was here before Grayhaven was founded. The treasure map is showing us a location HERE, in the ruins under our feet!"
OOC:
It's clear to those of you who know the city that Findal is right; these locations do correspond to several ways into the tunnels beneath the city, and give the direction to move through the ancient tunnels to get to the abbey that contains the artifact. It may also be the case that the tunnels would provide a way to emerge outside of the city.
Jul 8, 2024 7:29 am
Eozindra leans into the huddle over the map, reexamining the parchment with the input from Findal. She scrutinizes the lines and scripture with new understanding granted by the gnome’s explanations. "I see it," she exhales excitedly and leans further in, dropping her minuscule weight onto Elysia’s lap as she gets as close to the scholar’s level. The pale half-elf’s eyes zip back and forth over the map, following the gnome’s gestures. The bard’s ferver and excitement seem equal if not surpassing that of the little gentleman; while she shares his enthusiasm for the discovery of ancient knowledge and artifacts, she is additionally enlivened by the possibility of enacting an adventure like the ones she has only read about in books and epic poems. "We absolutely have to make sure they do not find this."
OOC:
Can I do a history or something check to see if there’s anything else Zin can help decipher? She looked at it before and figured out it was a map, but now that Findal is here to bounce ideas off of, maybe something in her teachings has been stirred in the back of her brain. Or maybe she can help translate some of the text.

Is there a spot on the map indicated anywhere near our current location? She would be looking for the nearest entrance to get off the streets as quickly as possible once they leave the hiding spot.

Elysia nods along with the information that Findral is giving them, noting the different places on the map and memorizing them to have in her internal layout of the city. For a moment, she's distracted by the sudden appearance of the wisp of a girl in her lap. With silent laughter at her older sister's behavior, she embraces a rare moment of outward affection and hugs her sister around her waist before leaning back in her seat again.

The conversation brings back her more sober, serious manner as she contemplates her own thoughts. "While I am not desiring to be petty in this case, I do agree with Adran," she voices finally. "I do not believe they can be trusted with the artifact and leaving it within their reach is asking for trouble for at minimum their citizens. I am unsure what we should do with it as I am clueless on its purpose.
Perhaps we should do some investigating in some of these notable areas on the map and discover what we're getting into before we attempt retrieval though."

Findal
"Before I forget, here is your pay." Findal's piping high voice cuts in. The gnome reaches into the bag that Elysia and the others retrieved from the Inn, and pays each PC 10 krugerrands. To Ishi, Eozindra, and Elysia, he says "I know I didn't hire you from the caravan, but you certainly earned this, too.".

With that responsibility out of the way, Findal responds to Elowin's question. "As Tykus' map depicts the old city, it's unfortunately the case that the most likely access is from underground." He coughs weakly, the enthusiasm of translation waning and his exhaustion catching up to him. "Which is to say: the sewers. Grayhaven is unlike many cities you may have seen," Findal considers his audience of outlanders, "or maybe not seen...what I mean is that the Gray Generals began construction with a plan that their city would accommodate a great many people, and as generals they had a high value on logistics. So they excavated a series of irrigated tunnels under the city streets to carry the residents' waste away, instead of using gutters for that purpose as in most places." He blinks, realizing that he's gone into didactic mode again, and stops himself before he launches into a history of waste management. "That's all to say that there are tunnels under Grayhaven that likely connect to the old ruins in places. So you could start in the sewers."

"A trip into the sewers is not a pleasant prospect..." Findal trails off. He is suffering from two levels of exhaustion, and won't be able to reconnoiter with the party. But he struggles to keep his eyes open for one last note: "...but there is one potential benefit: it's unlikely that the Grayhaven Guards will look for you there...and they will be looking for us. I will stay here to rest and recover, while you go and see what you can find. You can meet me here again, after...or if I'm not here, it's because one of the groups chasing us - the Duke's men or more assassins - got too close. In that case, I will try to use my magic to escape the city, though it is risky. If you don't find me here, I'll try to meet you again at the Wayfarer Inn in Crosswell."

Adran will take a knee by Findal. "Do you need anything? Food and water? A blanket?" He will work to prep their friend's ruck, so if he has to wake up and hit the ground running it's easy to grab.

Turning to the others, he says, "I hope he's safe here."

He chuckles at his sister's question. "I don't suppose 'a path that avoids the sewers' is an option? I suppose not then. Shall we?"
OOC:
Adran will make sure Fin's bag is packed tight, with all his personal gear (including a waterskin and rations) secured so if Fin has to grab it he can. Adran will also set a day of rations and an extra waterskin out so Fin can eat when he wakes up. Also, if Adran knows Fin uses a focus, he'll make sure the focus is secured to the pack also.

Adran carries two waterskins, so he can leave one. Just let me know to mark it off if needed.

"I will do my best to check in with you when we are within range of the hideout." Eozindra reassures the gnome before she stands to follow Elysia.

Leaving three days of rations and a waterskin for Findal -- 2 days of rations packed into his bag, one for him to eat now (or when he wakes up). The waterskin can probably strap to the outside of the bag and be both accessible/useable but still attached for a quick run.

"If we can, I might pick up a few things in the market. Depends on how publicized we are when we get there, I suppose," Adran sighs as he heads out with Elysia. Glancing at his sister, he adds, "Might be best to buy a spare set of boots now. It will only get harder with time."

Please, if you don't like any of it, change it Spaceseeker. I'm just running with my creativity and tried to make the space as pleasant to be in as possible.
Taking a look around the room they'd been hiding in, Elysia was proud for a moment to share the space she'd discovered as a way to help them. She was always willing to lend a hand where she could. The hidden basement they'd stowed away in was beneath a tannery that had been abandoned a month ago from what she'd heard gossiped about. Still, she was thankful of whatever wizard had been paid off to keep the chemical smells that still sat in the floorboards above them away from this room that had been magically preserved on its own. The basement was rather spacious, as big as the shop above it, as it had been designed originally to be the space used for the tanning process instead of the storage room that it was.

Drying racks lined one wall, some of them with rather imperfect leather still attached to them. Opposite from where she stood at the ladder to climb above again sat three empty, possibly unused as they didn't have any scent to them, wooden vats that reminded her of shallow, large wine barrels. It had been a spot she considered lining with the imperfect leather and having a nap if they'd needed to use the space when she'd found it. To her left, opposite the racks, Elysia's eyes ran over the two shelves that housed used, abandoned tools that ranged from the knives needed to pounding stones and polishing instruments. Beside them lie a scale for weighing the leathers. The space at the center of the room lay clean and open aside from the table with a few chairs around it. While large enough to possibly use to lay out and examine leather close up, it wasn't much bigger than a table to seat six people to dinner comfortably.

With a silent sigh, Elysia returned her gaze to the door that separated them from the upstairs. Whoever the previous tanner had been was often cursed by the nearby residents for having the "grand" idea to do his tanning above inside the shop where he could "be near his patrons." She already had memorized the layout beyond the long counter that hid their basement trapdoor. Behind cabinet doors hid the chemicals that still permeated the air faintly enough to be an annoyance above. She wasn't sure if a vat had leaked into the floor, bottles had been spilled, or just time itself had incorporated the scents into the space, but its odor wrinkled even her nose and warded people away from the shop, making it a perfect hideout. Larger tools hung off of nails along the back wall of the shop with display racks dotted throughout the main space to show not only finished leathers, but also creations made from them. The fine layer of dust over the space showed its disuse along with the cobwebs that began to accumulate in corners and across spaces between shelving.

Blinking her mind away from what awaited above, she looked to the party before reminding, "Don't forget to hold your breath when we leave if you are sensitive to the smells above."

Letting Sia drive this hideout description because OH BOY do I have plans for Zin’s Magnificent Mansion. Not that I’m like, eager or anything.

Also, @Kilikina I am operating under the assumption that Adran got your hand crossbow and Zin now has one because, well, she needs to be ranged. If you wanna swap the hand for your shortbow, we can do that also. Just let me know so I can make sure my sheet and dice roll options are correct.
With one last glance to ensure the gnome felt as secure as he could in the space, Eozindra pulled in a deep breath and escaped the hideaway quietly, making herself available to Elysia in ensuring the upstairs looked appropriately vacated as the group sneaks away. She whispers to the group, "I can stop for goods without be recognized while the rest of you get out of sight. I need bolts anyway," she pats the hand crossbow newly lashed to her thigh. "Just let me know what it is you will need and I will do my best. I think we are probably better off avoiding too much direct contact with the city as a whole right now. Especially as a group."

The frame is constructed of a metalwork that mimics lace and the fabric has an iridescent sheen. It could be used as little ears or (artistic) wings, a tail, or Godzilla spines. Or he could just dismantle it and use the spines for whatever needed. Who am I to say?

Morik would be ecstatic at seeing the thing, but he doesn't really carry little stuff that would be helpful :(

Elowins contribution to the Steel Defender is, as with her brother's earlier creations, power. She will lend him magical energy and Lunas blessing into kickstaring the beast

Ishi said "Unkie I don't really understand what you are making but will this help?" He handed him a
Rank insignia from a lost legionnaire number 42

"I found it on an ancient battlefield when I was a child and had pretended it came from my real mother or father"

I love all this detail, and I'm looking forward to reading how the Steel Defender comes together. By all means continue your conversation/preparation here, but in parallel, I will be starting Part Three: Splendor of the Sewers in another thread.
OOC:
En route to the sewer, would it have been possible for Zin to stop and buy more regular crossbow bolts somewhere? If you want to say yes and not have it be a big thing, I can burn a spell slot for Disguise Self; that’s what she was going to do to grab provisions for anyone who wanted things from a shop before heading down.

Oh, that's heartbreaking! What a wonderful way to show how Ishi has developed trust for the group, to be so vulnerable!

Yes, that's fine. The evening crowds are pretty thick, and some of the fletchers are starting to sell Queen's Fair-themed product: arrows, quarrels, and bolts that are painted with bright yellow and dark black stripes. You decide whether you need to cast a spell to disguise yourself, or whether your face will just be one of many in the crowd of shoppers.

Meh, if things are busy, she’ll risk it. Hood up and hair tucked inside her cloak, she will have just used the guise of "I’m incredibly pale and therefore need protection from the sun so I wear a hood in all weather" to at least downplay her obvious floofy curls and make the interaction as quick as possible. There’s no way this will come back to bite us in the ass.
