Maethor responded to Kurt as he spoke of torches: "Save your torches friend. I can provide all the light you'll ever need".

As a demonstration the elf walked over and touched the end of the man's halberd while uttering the word "illuminate". In that very instant, the head of Kurt's halberd began to glow.

Used Light cantrip to turn Kurt's Halberd into a torch. 20' bright light + 20' dim light.

Kurt laughs and accept the magic, "Your needed light will be very welcome, but hot torches are just to totally fend off the pesky rats. And I have plenty of good torches too."

With camp packed up and everyone gathered you are ready to continue on with your quest. Walking around to the gatehouse you see the hevey iron portcullis and closed great wooden doors beyond.

How will you try to get into the keep?

Erani, is there a way into the gatehouse from above, perhaps you can get inside and raise the portcullis?" Alexander asks the Birdman, hoping they wouldn't have to do to much physical labor to get inside. "If not, I have rope and am sure that you could find something along the wall to secure it to so we could climb."

Kurt agrees, "Rope up and over might be the best of answer. That ancient portcullis may not have been operated in a very long time."

"I will fly over the wall and look for a mechanism to raise the portcullis. A moment."

I fly over the wall and land in the courtyard near the gatehouse. I look for a mechanism (wheel, lever, etc.) that might activate a counterweight and raise the portcullis.

Erani upon landing on the other side of the gatehouse you see that the large wooden doors are locked shut with a hefty wooden bar resting on two brackets. At the base of each gatehouse tower is a man door, you also recall seeing doors leading into the towers from the battlements.

On the outside of the wall as the group examines the portcullis you can see that the chain that would raise it disappears into the second story of both gatehouse towers. There are also arrow slits pointing into the space between the portcullis and wooden double doors from both levels.

Can I lift the bar?

Erani, you approach and try to lift the bar to open the door. It takes a moment, the bar is very heavy, but you are able to lift it. Once removed the double wooden doors easily swing open.

You are all now looking at each other though the portculis.

I will fly up to the battlements, and see if I can gain entry to either of the gate houses from there.
