Before Lightning Keep

A marauding dragon has laid waste to numerous villages, devouring some residents while displacing others. It strikes without mercy. No one knows where it came from, where it lairs, or how long it intends to terrorize the realm.

But there is hope. Long ago, a werewolf knight of great valor used her wealth to raise a bastion at the edge of the wilderness. This castle had the power to generate a lightning shield around itself—a shield powerful enough to break sieges and keep monsters at bay. The castle was abandoned shortly after the knight passed away. By then, peace had settled across the land, making the stronghold unnecessary.

Village leaders displaced by the dragon post a cry for help, which the PCs answered. You have been asked to travel to Lightning Keep and rid it of any threats. Rumor has it the lightning shield is powered by six magical lightning rods. If you can find these rods, perhaps the lightning shield could be reactivated, allowing refugees fleeing the dragon to use the keep as a sanctuary. The elders having lost everything in the attacks will give the group the keep once the danger has passed in payment.

You have traveled three days as a group, no trouble beyond some squirrels trying to steal rations. The sun is low in the sky when you come around a curve in the old road and in a great clearing in the wood before you stands Lightning Keep. Lightning Keep is a well-preserved structure with battlements lining its granite walls. The road leads to a stone gatehouse, which contains a closed set of heavy wooden doors behind an iron portcullis. You see no signs of habitation and no other entrances from where the group stands, just emerging into view.

The slender young man with bright blond hair dressed in the worn light blue robes spent most of the trip trying to get one of his new companions to listen to his theories on time and space, especially his theories on relativity. He doubts they cared or listened but he just enjoyed getting to talk to others about it.

Alex stops before the keep and looks over the ancient structure. He takes it in with a sense of wonder and contemplation about how the entire structure has remained intact all these years. He glances up at the sky and then at his companions. "Do we proceed in the failing light or wait until morning?" Alex was hesitant to proceed without the input of the others.

Stout Kurt who fairly much preferred not to abjectly listen to Alexander's scientific rabble has been fairly quietly marching along in his fortitude of self chain mail wall. He did brief try to inject some notion of dieties into the conversation and quickly gave that up. His knowledge and faith both were lacking.

His black eyes view the ancient structure and pronounces, "Yes. Tomorrow's light will be better." as he stands there viewing it in fading light.

Erani launches himself into the air. He flies off towards the castle. He will survey the structure from a height 60' above the highest battlements. What does he see?

Well would you look at that, just flew right off. Rangrim watches Erani fly off. Yes, making camp tonight and going in after a good nights sleep would be preferable I agree. Thinking on some of what he heard from Alexander Grim had no idea what he was talking about. Grim only knew Talos and that was all he needed. This keep is the perfect place for him.

Erani takes off into the sky as the rest of the group watches him shoot up. He makes a slow circling pass over the keep. The party decides to make camp for the night and tackle the keep in the light of day.

As he circles, Erani sees below him, in the dying light, that the wall with its battlements make almost a square before attaching to the north and west walls of the large keep itself. The Keep is two stories tall with a pitched roof and multiple windows, you can also see two smaller buildings at its feet. The shadows in the courtyard are stretched and heavy. You see no other gatehouses but the one that faces southward. As you circle back to your party you see they have begun to set up camp outside the wall.

Quite the opposite to Kurt, Maethor is seen actively listening to Alex, and seems to be quite fascinated by the man's thoughts on various theoretical topics ranging from time and space and what he referred to as 'relativity'.

As Erani flew off, Maethor vocalized his agreement, "Yes, at first light would seem a wise choice. Going in blind, both literally and figurative, to a place you know not of, is never really a good idea."

May expecting Kurt take a reaction attack on fleeing Wolf 1 as it tries to escape Kurts long reach with his powerful halberd. Kurt maintains a 10' reach for area of threat. If so, then he just wasted his reaction by looks of the roll unless he managed to get advantage form some place or some other bonus.

Unlucky Kurt haplessly misses the easy fleeing wolf (1) and turns his killers halberd's attention to the current attacking wolf (2). He critically slashes into it.

Kurt attacks with a Crit 20 for 6 slashing damage (Halberd) + 3 Brute + 8 slashing crit for a total of 16 Slashing damage. Polearm Master attack hits maybe for an 11 and would do 4 bludgeoning damage +3 Brute for total of 7 bludgeoning damage.
Is the dear wolf still alive as to suggest if or not Kurt to use his Acton Surge or not in an attempt to finish it off?

No idea why it did that last roll twice. Gotta love the system. Great Weapon Fighting was the initial reason for the roll.

Man of action Kurt fully extends his brutal attack on Wolf (6) that is attacking Rangrim. He slashes it for 10 damage. He then turns decisive attention to the mean Wolf (8) attacking him currently. He expertly slashes it down for 15 damage.

-Wolf 2 tries again to bite Kurt but again misses
-Kurt comes in with a massive 16 dmg to wolf 2, it falls dead at his feet.
-Rangrim hits his attacker with wrath of the storm, the wolf does make its save, 4dmg, the hammer attack misses.
-Alexander throws up a sphere of magnify gravity at two wolves, W4 and W5, who come running around the corner, one falls it’s save and is stoped in its tracks, the other yips in pain and changes its path back towards the woods.
-Wolf 3 having been hit by Wrth of the Storm turns to run as well. Tail between its legs.
-Maethors sling attack goes wide and misses his target.
-3 more wolves come running attacking Rangrim, Alexander, and Kurt. Only the bite on Alexander hits 8 dmg, he keeps his feet.
-Alexander stabs the wolf with his dagger for 4 dmg
-Erani fire bolts wolf 8 for 1 dmg
-Wolf 1 disappears into the tree line
-Kurt like a whirlwind hits both wolf 6 for 10 dmg, and wolf 8 for 15 dmg causing both to fall dead.
-Rangrim in aid of Alexander strikes wolf 7 for 6 dmg and it falls dead between the two men
-Wolves 3, 4, 5, movement and action to the tree line ears pinned back in fear and pain

Seeing that the wolves had no intention of putting up a fight, and his not having the desire to kill needlessly, Maethor returns the sling to its place upon his belt. He decides the parting shot, from as far as it was, wasn't worth the cost of a lost sling bullet.

Erani offers to keep watch through the night as the others, sleep. The closest perch is the top of the gatehouse of Lightning Keep. The roof of the gatehouse is slanted but would be easy to spend the night atop. The clearing that the keep rests in is large and the closest trees are no closer than 80 feet.

Kurt and Rangrim begin piling up the wolf corpses a short distance away from your chosen campsite, preparing to burn them.

Working Kurt carries no actual thoughts about this Talos. Just a word of some deity. Kurt's interests just lay in systematically disposing of the dead body not suffering any grief of them being about. To easy going him, the needed action is just something that definitely needs to be completed.

After dealing with the wolf body matters, Kurt has further plans by quaintly settle down for the night on a his rolled-out comfy bedroll. As husky him lays down for the hopefully quiet night, he keeps ever watching head facing toward his waiting goal. He chooses to keep his light crossbow unloaded but close by. He fully prefers his handily slaying halberd nearby. He snoozes away in his protective chain mail.

As a demonstration the elf walked over and touched the end of the man's halberd while uttering the word "illuminate". In that very instant, the head of Kurt's halberd began to glow.

Erani upon landing on the other side of the gatehouse you see that the large wooden doors are locked shut with a hefty wooden bar resting on two brackets. At the base of each gatehouse tower is a man door, you also recall seeing doors leading into the towers from the battlements.

On the outside of the wall as the group examines the portcullis you can see that the chain that would raise it disappears into the second story of both gatehouse towers. There are also arrow slits pointing into the space between the portcullis and wooden double doors from both levels.

Erani, you approach and try to lift the bar to open the door. It takes a moment, the bar is very heavy, but you are able to lift it. Once removed the double wooden doors easily swing open.

However, I can easily secure a rope to the battlements so that you all can climb up, and if one of you has such skills we could gain entrance that way. Or even to the courtyard, using the rope to climb down. Perhaps raising the portcullis is unnecessary."

Rangrim you feel your examination is very thorough but you find no entrance. With your 25 perception you notice that a creature of small size or smaller might be able to slip into the arrow slits.

Erani takes the rope from Alexander and flies up to the wall once more. Secure it the rope to the battlement is not difficult and you throw the other end down to the others side of the wall.

Once in the courtyard with the gatehouse at your back the morning sun still low casts long shadows. To your right is what apears to have once been a barracks or servants quarters. There is also a larger but squat one story building with a peaked roof in the north east corner of the courtyard. The Keep itself is large with two stories, and leans more toward strength than elegance. The upper floor has 3 frosted windows that face you. The stone that makes up the walls and battlements also is the basis for every building within.

Erani, perched upon the battlements once more only you can see into the south east corner at the moment so only you see the small building there, a tool shead perhaps.

What does the group wish to do?

The second building you approach is about 1/3 the size of the stable. It too is only one story with a peaked roof and stone walls. The single door that you have seen faces west and you have seen at least one window facing north. As the group approaches all seems still in the courtyard.

Rangrim with your passive perception, and Erani with your vantage point you both notice 1 or 2 rats scurry from the approaching group. Erani you see where they go, the small shed like building.

The rats ran to the small shed like building that the party can’t see, Rangrim just saw them run behind the corner of the building (appears to be a barracks perhaps) that the group on the ground is approaching and that Kurt is trying the door of. https://i.imgur.com/xa9ExEB.jpegThe rats paths are the red lines. The door was not locked nor was it very hard to open so as you (Kurt) slam into is with your full force it whips open with a crash. Roll a dex save for me to see if you keep your feet, DC 7

The interior of this building reeks of mildew, and everything here is shrouded in dust. You see a stone fireplace, one window, and six sets of wooden bunk beds holding rotting, straw-filled mattresses. Lying atop four of the beds are shadowed unmoving forms.

Torch holding Kurt becomes very worried the sudden moment the evil undead rise. He instantly realizes is what they are. Worried him quickly tosses his burning hot torch into the ancient bedding that the new coming undead is starting to rise from.

@GeneCortess your first hit will take down 4, what position are you going to out the window? Also roll a d6 to see fire dmg for this round.

Fast roasting Kurt bravely crushes the last evil Skeleton #4 with his reaching halberd and double taps it to make sure it has perished. Quick him then promptly races to exit the burning building by the open doorway. Once outside, he will gladly step aside to leave space for another to exit and puts out any flames still clinging dearly to him. "Well, they are all gone now."

Careful to skirt the burning barracks. You make your way around the side and down into the corner of the Courtyard. The small building appears to be an outhouse. There is much sign of animals scurring about, small animals. You do not see any actual rats straightway, perhaps they fled from the rain.

Erani and Kurt see no danger at present, but do notice that there are a few places behind the outhouse where rats have raked the dirt up into piles. Either digging up or hiding things.

Alexander within the out house you can see this is in fact the rats nest. Scattered throughout the bedding and a few squirming bodies you can see ‘treasures’ they have gathered and one or two divits full of wiggling naked kits.

Erani you return to the corner were you saw the disturbed earth. The rain has started to come down in sheets and the ground is a muddy mess. It takes you some time, 10 minutes to locate and fish about in each of the hiding places but you find a silver key with a wolfs head engraved upon it in one of the holes. Lighting flashes in the darkened sky above as you look down at the key.

Erani - The key opens the door you try at the base of the western gatehouse tower. With it, you see a square room with arrow slits that face toward where the portculis is. There are a few boxes stacked up within the small room and in the center.There is a ladder that leads up to what looks like a trap door to the second floor.

I check the doorway and immediate surrounds for any sign of a trap. If I do not detect anything, I will step inside out of the rain and wait for my comrades. Otherwise I will wait for the others outside, hoping one of them has a skillset for such things.

Alex slowly and carefully follows Erani inside the gatehouse. He examines the interior, looking for anything that might seem out of place or hinder them opening the gate such as damaged gears or rusted chains.

Alexander you see no mechanism in this room that would raise the portcullis, but you know that usually such things are on upper levels. The ladder in the center of the room leads to the second story of the gate house through a trap door.

The upper floor of the gatehouse is very similar to the lower except for a large wheel with heavy chain attachments is mounted to the south wall and the door exits, presumably to the walls, to the east.

Alexander, all seems to be in working order, but as you examine you notice that the chain connections you see attached to the wheel are mirrored on the opposite side. It is likely that both wheels in both gatehouse second floors will have to be turned in unison to raise the portculis.

Anyone who takes Kurt up on his suggestion to check the other tower finds a tower just like the other you have been in. You will need the key to open the doors and you find a working wheel in this tower as well. Working together, it is simple to open the portal, but the large modern doors still have the bar across it that you would have to move before all obstacles are moved from the front entrance to the courtyard.

With the bird's eye view and the groups eyes you see well, even in the storm. It is only about 30 feet from the front gate to what looks to be the main entrance of the keep.

Erani can see that off to your left there are stairs that go up to meet the wall. You can also see that there is a door at that point.

There may be other doors that you have not seen, but you don’t know.

The large wooden double door swings open to reveal a very long hallway. The Hall is about 10 feet wide and 40 feet long. You can just make out in the torchlight that the hallway ends at a stone wall and a right and a left turn.

There are 2 doorways to your left and 1 to your right. All have closed wooden doors. The left are closer to this end of the hall and the door on the right is about midway.

This dusty hall is empty except for cobwebs and a few moth eaten tapestries. There are no rugs on the floor but the stone, though covered in dust, was obviously well masoned as it is smooth and even beneath your feet.

What do you do?

Kurt opens the door to a 15x30 foot room.

Fourteen wooden chairs surround a wooden dining table. Suspended above the table is an iron chandelier missing its candles. Two empty sideboards stand against the north wall.

Set into the east wall is a blackened fireplace. Above its blue marble mantelpiece hangs a metal shield bearing an insignia: a wolf’s head with three lightning bolts above it.

Like the Hall the Dinning room is covered with dust, the air smells stale, and the only light is Kurt's torch.

There is no further mention of an exit other than the entrance door coming into this dusty dining hall.

Kurt knows from a story another soldier told him once that the heraldry of the Werwolf Knight who built this fortress was what you see on this shield. There are no windows in this room, only the one door and the fireplace are built in.

Alexander and Erani in the doorway see the Hall remains clear of threat.

Kurt, you feel like you have throughly searched this room but can’t really remember what you actually saw. But definitely no lightning rods laying around.

Alexander, you can tell that this was once some sort of vestibule. There is not much in here besides the built in benches, hooks, and shelves. You do find a small packet of what seems to be dust. Your proficiency with the arcane lets you know it’s not just dust, there is some sort of magic here too. Add packet with 11 pinches of dust to your inventory.

Rangrim, with your keen stone sense, you know that this keep though long abandoned is still in excellent condition. It was built by skilled and knowing hands.
The reward of it as promised by the elders, for clearing it out and giving shelter to the refugees, is great indeed.
