Note: I've updated the Orlane map to show numbers on the places you've approached/identified, for ease of reference.OOC:
Feel free to continue to discussing a plan. When you do decide who is going where, just post what your character is doing. If you're going to try to evade notice during the day, include a DEX (Stealth) check.Aug 14, 2024 6:30 pm
"This is good," says Aanbo, as if referring to a printed list of ideas in his hand. "Reptile and Theran would be able to tell us about the inn once they've completed their infiltration.
"As for whether or not the rest of the town is under this goddess's influence... I do remember that many of the people in the inn were hesitant at confronting us after we were drugged. It makes me think that while they work together in this kidnapping conspiracy, they aren't necessarily skilled at subduing armed adventurers until they've disabled us or have more numbers. It might be that our skittish neighbors are the same when alone. hence their reactions when we arrived."
Aanbo considers the situation. "How's about this? While Reptile and Theran try to get our equipment from the inn (or at least report on what's going on there), some of us can investigate the outlying farms and try and see if any of them are truly involved in this town's dark dealings, and another group scout the temple's entrance for people going in and coming out."

Reptile by looks will be on the southern side of the bridge hidden way to give cover or aid. And probably not doing a grand job of it by dice.

"As much as I want to move fast, I wonder if we’ll be safe spreading out in pairs to investigate the village. I for one ain’t especially stealthy… folks here would probably see me and know me for a stranger pretty quickly. I wouldn’t mind stepping out at night though, when we won’t probably run into too many folks"
Also, her background offers her the rustic hospitality trait. That’s why she is insisting on finding the decent, down-to-earth villagers that might be willing to assist the party and tell u more about what’s going on in Orlane.
OOC:
But if you all prefer to spread out, I’m okay with that. She’d probably be more useful in a stationary observation post (like watching the temple entrance from a hidden position, if one could be found). I’m also quite curious about the lone house encircled by woods to the west of our position. Also itching to investigate the other Inn in town, posing as a traveller perhaps…Also, her background offers her the rustic hospitality trait. I wonder what that lone house in the wood is. Maybe we should check that out. Maybe that is where she is.

When Reptile is in place, Spider-Theran will crawl down and make his way to the Inn to investigate. An hour seems like a long time, but Theran knows he can't dally.

There isn't a good way to sneak across the bridge in broad daylight. Reptile and Theran saunter across the bridge, affecting nonchalance, and then Reptile ducks into the abandoned barn before the people working in the adjacent farm (where the children were yesterday) see them...hopefully.
The other thing to declare is: which way are you going to enter the Inn? The picture below represents what the two of you can see in terms of ways in: two doors (the brown rectangles) and three chimneys (the black protuberances on the west, east, and south walls).
After those two Dungeon Busters have left to scout the Golden Grain Inn, Aanbo, Chase, Joseph, and Myrtha consider whether to split up to check out the temple on the hill and the paths through the woods, or whether to do those one at a time. "I'm fine either way," Joseph assures the others. "I'm pretty good at sneaking, if you want me to scout ahead, but I do appreciate backup."

It's up to you two whether Theran used his Wild Shape ability first, climbing aboard Reptile or having the barbarian pick him up, or if you wait to transform until you are in position in the barn. Theran will change early, and ride on Reptile. The walk should only be a matter of minutes. He will enter the Inn through the door -- there has to be a crack a spider can fit through/under.

Back at the barn, Aanbo suggests, "Let's all check on that small house in the woods. It will give Reptile and Theran some time and it's nearby. We can use the trees for cover, though I suppose there might be a fence or something that could get in our way."

Which door, though? Front (where the party entered/exited last night), or back?Aug 16, 2024 2:38 am
Joseph winces at the big folks' attempts at stealth (though they are quite good, he can't help but feel pride in his own ability), and tries to do better. He keeps hissing back at them to "Be quiet!" every time there is a noise, not being willing to admit that he's the one who has stepped on a leaf or left an elbow sticking out of a shadow.

Having transformed into an arachnid, Theran crawls along to the building, then up the wall (to avoid getting stepped on by any passersby), around the corner and around the doorjamb to slip in the gap between door and frame. He crawls around on the ceiling and support beams, slowly gathering in a sense of what is in the room with his limited spider vision observing what's in the room. His many eyes are drawn hungrily to any movement, so he quickly identifies that there are eight people in the common room, none of them Bertram. One man is tending bar, the other seven are sitting and staring morosely into their mugs, apparently deep into their cups despite the early hour. The inanimate objects in the room are instinctively far less interesting, and Theran has to focus very hard to not just let all the details fade into the background. There is no sign of any injured or dead bodies, and new rushes have been scattered on the floor, concealing the presence or absence of any stains. There is no sign of any of the party's equipment in this room; it must have been moved or concealed in the many hours since Aanbo carried the druid out insensate. From his perch above the fireplace mantel, Theran half-sees, half-remembers sees that there are two doors leading off of this room, as well as the stairs leading upwards.
Outside in the barn, Reptile sees no suspicious activity around the Inn, and no one comes in or out. He hears the voice of one of the farm children across the road giggling, apparently playing some game in their yard.

Edited to correct the presentation of Theran's vision as that of an elf, not a spider.Aug 17, 2024 7:54 am
Meanwhile, back at the abandoned farm...
Large swaths of the Dim Forest have been cleared to make room for crop fields. But a finger of the Forest curls around the western edge of the village. This grove - the grove that the four Dungeon Busters are entering - is the very tip of this arm of the Forest. The massive elm trees grow right up to the road, and no further. Joseph keeps trying to lead the way, but Myrtha and Chase keep passing him with their longer legs. It is cool and green under the boughs of the giant trees, with pools of deep shadow. The well-maintained path meanders around the trunks of the trees, leading ever deeper into the grove. Then the trees open up to reveal a small glade, which contains a humble shack, a small shade garden, and an old man facing away from the heroes, currently kneeling down to pull weeds. "Welcome, visitors!" he says, without turning his head. He wears simple clothing made of faded rough cloth, with some kind of fur ruff around his neck.

Myrtha thought this place might have been a nice one to grow old in, with the trees sheltering one’s home from the bustle of the road. She found it strange that the old man could detect their presence and their foreignness by hearing alone. But they had armor on, and weapons hanging at their belts — they mustn’t sound at all like the local folk.
"And a good day to you. I hope the gardening is rewarding," she answered, hoping to set the man at ease.

Chase will act casual but will keep his guard up with strange fellow. Always ready to act with his bow.

Foreigner Reptile would so much want to disappear but sure an attempt would result in obviously making him out of place, so it is just better to be casual and succeed in not gathering attention. His translucent blue eyes keep a sharp eye out for the returning spider, but time worries him. Longer it takes the less likely for the spider to complete with the goods. It would be fantastic at this time to have some cheap tobacco he fathoms.
He just stands there with his shaggy black hair dangling to the slight breeze. Reminds him of the many times he has done just this watching for criminals. Hopefully his common clothing will not show him off too badly but that big axe and its smaller partner will that he sports might.
