Against the Cult: Entering Orlane (1.7)

As the plan seemed to be settled, Myrtha began inspecting all of the entrances and exits of the building, and considering them from a defensive standpoint. She would then consider what best position to take, given that she had no meaningful missile weapons: she wouldn’t mind looking like bait, many a presumptuous idiot had underestimated her based on her gender. She began her study of the barn at the southern and eastern sides of the building, as those were the more direct paths of approach from the Inn.

@spaceseeker19 Is there a loft in this barn with a way to see out? Just checking before Chase heads out. If there is a loft with a way to keep watch he will do that . If not he will find a good place close to the barn to keep watch.

Moving towards Aanbo, Theran confides in his team mate. "My magic is limited without my staff," he begins, "and I need a staff or club to fight. I am going to search for a weapon, even if I can't find a magical focus."

With that, the wood elf begins hunting for at least a viable club as the night edges closer.

Easy going Reptile accepts the plan. Helpful him does offer to Theran, "Well if you want, you can have my extra handaxe. Not sure how well you can handle it but it is better than nothing in your hands."

He further mentions as he shows his personal signal whistle on a cord round his neck, "Should I find the situation needs help, I have this load whistle that can be used. Just something in the future to keep in mind." He softly tots it to give all an ideal of the sound of it.

Noting that Myrtha is peering about, "What does observant you largely perceive is the best means of apt defense for us here."

Obviously always there, Reptile is not a planner but a doer which is odd since he always appears rather intelligent. He is just misplaced sometime due to his more foreign background. And he is obviously not possessive about his belonging. Coin must not mean an awful lot to him.

Aanbo gives Theran his quarterstaff. "Kragga used this to good effect. Here you go!"

How much time before nightfall?
Is there sufficient material to make some barricades or other defenses?[/ooc]
OOC:
A1: Most of the day; it's been at most two hours since the party got moving in the morning. I'd say it's still before noon now.
A2: Yes. The Dim Forest is nearby, there's a massive elm on the property, and, just as close, there's all the lumber that was used to board up the farmhouse (6). There's also three old hay bales in the loft of the barn.

OOC:
A1: Yes, there's a loft with three hay bales (and a lot of loose hay in which mice have set up nests). You could open the loft door to look/aim out, but it might be obvious to locals that someone has opened the door which has been closed for months. As an alternative, you could use a hatchet (or, failing that, a dagger or sword) to widen a gap between boards or knock out a knothole for a smaller and less obvious peephole. On the other hand, how secret are you trying to be, if you are trying to get them to come? They might not even know where the party is, yet.

Myrtha considered the entrances to the barn.
OOC:
One ground level door (simple? double? sliding?), and a loft door? Can the ground door be locked or barred from the inside or outside?
Sep 1, 2024 12:25 pm
Chase will head up to loft and and find/or make a knot hole then use his sword to reem it out and make it bigger. He will do this in a proper post to watch the approach from the GG inn.

As the defenses took shape, Aanbo asks, "Since there's a lot of time before nightfall, I wonder if it's worth leaving a few breadcrumbs to our location? We're interested in setting up an ambush, right? Do you think it'll work better if we bait them into thinking we're not expecting them to attack?"

Looks at Aanbo "After I finish in the loft I could go out a leave a few clues."

OOC:
The ground level has double doors that swing open inwards. There are brackets on the outside of the doors for a bar to block the doors and keep them shut if an animal somehow gets out of its pen in the night. The loft is accessed by a ladder, and there is a latch on the inside of the door to keep it shut when not in use.

Setting up a bar on the inside of the double doors would require hammering nails to make brackets. This can be done (using lumber and nails retrieved from the house), but the noise will carry if you do.

Chase climbs the ladder into the loft and makes a peephole for himself, knocking out a knot in the wood and widening the hole with his sword. It's slow work, but he has plenty of time - probably seven hours - before dark. He and Aanbo talk about ways to lure the bad guys and/or green men into their trap. Theran feels emboldened with a staff in his hand again. Myrtha and Reptile are discussing plans of defense. Joseph tries climbing onto the house, to see if it would work as a good vantage point to loose arrows.

Nothing has appeared to bother the party so far.

Feel free to describe other preparations you care to make, or other actions you wish to do.

After politely declining Reptile's offer of a hand ax and thanking Aanbo, Theran will move the bails of hay into a line at the edge of the loft so the ranged combatants amongst them can have partial cover in addition to elevation. He will also see if he can secure the loft door to the outside, so no one can come in it. He will even look into setting a snare or two in the doorway if he can find rope and get them set up, in hopes anyone rushing in will be caught.

Lastly, the Wood Elf will head out to try and find both a shamrock and some mistletoe. (This doubles as hoping someone will see him, and learn about the barn.)
Sep 5, 2024 2:31 am
"Looking for herbs or other plants?" says Aanbo, following Theran out of the barn. "Let me help you. Maybe I'll also find something to supplement my kit."
OOC:
Will assist Theran in looking for shamrock and mistletoe.

Chase after making all ready will return to the loft for a quick bite and a cat nap. It very well could be a long night.
Sep 5, 2024 10:17 am
Myrtha was swift to abandon the idea of barricading the door from the inside, but she stepped out of the barn to look for any bars or implements that could be easily used by attackers to block the door from outside. "No point giving them the advantage of controlling entry..."

She then started making the rounds of the barn from the inside, trying to identify any section of the wall that might have been weak enough for the party to break their way through if needed.
OOC:
Being a front-line sort of fighter, there is little else Myrtha can do in preparation, I fear. She will nonetheless try to find any weaknesses in the wall, in case they have to break through it to leave.

Quiet Reptile walks with Myrtha exploring the possibilities of defense. It is not his forte and doesn't attempt any notions.

"Going to be a blood bath if any come here." he notes.

Chase will wake up after a short nap ready for the nights activities. He checks over his bow and tests the string to make sure it doesn't need changed. He will take up a position behind the bales Myrtha arranged so he has a clean clear shot at the doors. He will lay out arrows on top of the bales for easy use. Then will check with the other to see if they need anything. He will suggest to everyone to eat and rest when they are done he will keep watch from the loft.
Sep 8, 2024 12:02 am
Everybody works together to shift hay bales in the loft to provide cover for Chase and anyone else who will rain missiles down from on high. Theran demonstrates that the loft door can close and be latched, so Chase can close it up to prevent flying or climbing enemies from gaining entrance to the barn that way. Theran sets a snare inside the barn doorway, carefully hidden, and then makes sure that everyone in the party knows exactly where it is so they don't step in it by mistake. Then Theran leaves to hunt for ingredients, and Aanbo accompanies him, making their presence obvious to the townsfolk. Some of the people in town are aloof or scared, some are clearly curious about the PCs.

With Reptile's help, Myrtha removes anything that could be easily dragged in front of the doors, and they subtly weaken some of the boards toward the back, to that the party can create an escape route if the barn is set on fire or other calamity requires them to retreat. They also drag some barrels over to provide cover from missile fire on the ground floor, too.

After his nap and a kip, Chase keeps watch out of the loft door, far enough back from the opening that he is invisible in the darkness. He nods to Joseph, who is across the yard and on the roof of the farmhouse and so can't see him. Chase closes and latches the loft door and resumes his watch using his widened knot hole.

Theran and Aanbo quickly find an oak tree festooned with mistletoe in the trees at the edge of Ramne's grove, and they each help themselves to large sprigs of the fleshy green parasite. But they have to venture further to find any shamrock. As they wander about the village, Theran explains that clover is not the same thing as shamrock, or at least not exactly. They head east on the path toward the lake so they don't have to approach the Golden Grain Inn. Across from the abandoned farm the party has adopted as its base, a well-maintained farm stands. The druid and monk observe that the family of the farm has brought their animals out from the barn into a goat pen and a pig wallow. The goats are quite large, but the pig is titanic. Two little children play in the yard, but as soon as they notice Aanbo and Theran approaching, they leap to their feet and run inside. The adventurers feel their eyes on them the entire time they are walking past their farm. Rather, Theran continues, clover is a variety of shamrock, but there are other plants that are shamrocks, too.

They walk south on the cart track that leads to the back of the Slumbering Serpent Inn and toward another building, which they can see through the trees now is a water mill. As they walk down the drive, they see an older human man coming out of the Inn's outbuilding, staggering under the weight of a small cask. He sees the duo and calls out "Good day!" with a smile, but continues on with his burden. Aanbo points off the path toward the water's edge, where there is a patch of land that has grown with various plants and flowers, just a bit south of where the party found Myrtha asleep last night. Theran elaborates that "shamrock" is a category of plant. They notice a human boy, nearly pubescent, standing near the mill with his arms crossed, chin stuck out, and staring at the two strangers until they move out of sight. In among the trees by the water's edge, they get a good look at the large pond and frogs jump in the water at their approach. The water is placid, and coots slowly drift in the middle of the pond, occasionally diving for food. The hill on the other side topped by the temple seems to have a healthy vineyard on the hillside facing them, and trees line the path around the lake. It's lovely. Aanbo picks a sprig of sourgrass and chews on it meditatively, appreciating the moment.

Not every plant with three leaves is a shamrock, of course, Theran continues as they head back to the path. Mustard and hemlock grows tall to the north of the path, creating a thick screen between the village and the farmland beyond it. Theran observes that red clover is something that you'll often see on paths like this, as it is a favorite of horses. The two arrive at the entrance to the vineyard: there is a small, shabby farmhouse and barn here, dilapidated not from neglect like the abandoned farmhouse, but from constant wear and tear. There is an enormous rooster here and several hens scratching and pecking in the yard around a child barely old enough to stand (and smaller than the birds) who is absorbed in putting his hands in the dirt and sticking them in his mouth, one after another. The path turns south again, between a thick screen of willow trees on one side and the fairly steep slope of the hill on the other. The horses graze in their pastures, Theran elaborates in detail, and then later their droppings sprout new clover along cart tracks like this. The path leads past a very pretty, quaint little cottage with large, well-maintained flower gardens and actual glass windows. Theran stoops down and retrieves a fistful of shamrocks. Aanbo follows suit. As they head back to the abandoned farm, satisfied that they've made their presence known to several families in the village, Theran points to the flowers with the shamrocks and explains that it is called red clover because of the purplish color of the petals.
