I will back out of the inn sheathe my sword and pull my bow out to try and cover our retreat. Reptile see if Aanbo found Joseph if so grab him. Then we can try and find Myrtha. I know which way she went. I will fire at anyone who steps out that door.

The customers in the Golden Grain Inn and the armed thugs who came down the stairs see Bertram laid out and bleeding on the floor and they give a dismayed cry, gathering around him. Chase backs out of the doorway and follows Reptile into the darkness beyond the lantern light. Reptile reluctantly calms down, stows his hatchets, and tries to fulfil Chase's request, but he can't see a thing in the dark. Before the humans' eyes can finish adjusting, Aanbo hisses a whisper: "Yes, I found him: he's here. Follow my voice." After a few moments of stumbling, Reptile finds the halfling and hoists him like a sack over one shoulder. Much to their surprise, no one else has emerged from the Golden Grain Inn. They take stock of themselves: both Theran and Joseph are deeply asleep and do not respond to any efforts to wake them.

Alone of the conscious NPCs, Aanbo witnessed the sleeping effect of the New Morning's draught, and this seems different. Neither Joseph nor Theran seem dead, nor has their breathing slowed to the point of being imperceptible. They have a sickly pallor, and their breaths are slow and shallow, with the occasional snore.

Chase leads the party in the direction that Myrtha had gone. At first they are silent, watching the Golden Grain Inn anxiously, expecting that armed assailants will come boiling out of the building at any moment. But that doesn't happen at first, and as they continue past the Inn and the barn, they relax enough to start whispering to each other again. They get to the bridge and cross it; thankfully it is a stone bridge and so their footfalls do not boom and echo the way a wooden bridge might. The water of the Realstream River gurgles past the pilings below them. Trees loom on either side of the road on the north bank, making it very dark here. Up ahead on the right/to the east, there is a faint light shining through the trees. Unencumbered by a sleeping companion, Chase can attempt to track Myrtha's route, which would be much easier to do if there was light for him to see the path (roll WIS (Survival) and declare whether you are doing it in the dark or using some kind of light).

"What happened in there? Did we offend the cook?" Reptile jokes. Then, more seriously: "What did they do to Theran and Joseph? What did they do to us? I feel terrible."
Aug 6, 2024 6:35 am
"If I had to guess, they poisoned our food much the same as how Jonbon put the Jarl family to sleep," Aanbo says. "The innkeeper mentioned bringing us 'to her' which could mean the temple of Merikka and the goddess that Jonbon was so excited about."

He shifts Theran's weight across his own shoulders. "First things first, we've got to regroup. I don't know where Myrtha went, much less if she's succumbed to the poison and was already captured, or if she's awake and has moved somewhere we haven't been. We need to find her, but we can't call attention to ourselves in case other citizens are partners with those in the inn."

Chase will light torch to better see Myrtha's tracks if he can find any.
OOC:
If the poison is effecting that also I would only be +2

By the light of the torch, it is easy for Chase to identify Myrtha's tracks, and he leads the party down the road, north past what appears to be another Inn, to the intersection. Looking closely at the ground in the flickering light, Chase is able to discern that the fighter headed east at that point, and the two other conscious party members, Aanbo and Reptile, puffing and panting from carrying their sleeping companions Theran and Joseph, follow the ranger as he leads them toward the lake reservoir. Chase follows Myrtha's tracks right up to her supine body, laying sprawled under a tree near the water's edge. Aside from being drugged/poisoned and a possible bruise from falling down asleep, she seems unharmed.

The party is reunited! It's early night, everyone has been poisoned (and three of you are asleep as a result), and the Golden Grain Inn is full of hostiles. What do you want to do now?

Chase will pick up Myrtha I think we need to get out of town. I can find us a place to camp. What do you guys think?

"Hopefully not where we left the bear," says Aanbo. He struggles with Theran's body as much as he does against the poison still coursing through his own, and the monk finds that it's getting harder to move as the adrenaline ebbs. "It's late and they might be looking for us. Unless everybody in Orlane is involved in this, we can try to find a barn or something closer; otherwise, into the woods we go."
Aug 7, 2024 8:40 pm
Agreed, I will keep my eye open for something closer and suitable for our needs. Chase also feels himself slowing and getting weaker with the extra weight. Luckily it was the lighter people we have to carry.
Aug 7, 2024 9:37 pm
Aanbo wonders if Theran is truly as light as appearances might convey, but perhaps it's just because of the poison. He hides his discomfort with the humorous observation that presumably the biggest and strongest person walking right now might be carrying the smallest.

Feeling a bit off still after coming down from Rage. He is so much glad to see that disappeared Myrtha appears fine.

"We need to hold up. This poison is harsh."

The three conscious adventurers take stock of their surroundings. There are a few lights further in the distance around the lake. But you passed a sturdy farmhouse and barn just a short distance back (to the north of the path), and of course the other Inn. There's another building to the south of you, around the curve of the lake: your memory places it as probably the water mill.

The immediate surroundings:

Note: the star still indicates the party's location.
The green building is another inn. The purple buildings are homes and the brown structures are outbuildings: barns, sheds, etc. Brown lines are roads/paths/driveways. Green blobs are trees.

"I'd feel better if we were further away from the temple," says Aanbo, looking to the east as though the priests could already see them. "Maybe we head back west, then north. There was a solitary barn and small house just off the main road, and if we need to escape we can duck into the forest or the open plain."

Larger Reptile responds, "Sounds like a plan." He will instead pick up his earlier traveling companion Myrtha to carry and leave the other's to be carried. A good guess would place his actions to be protective of her.

Chase will switch with Aanbo and Theran and let him take Joseph. Sounds like a plan let's get it. Heads off towards the barn.

Stumbling along in the dark, Aanbo, Chase, and Reptile tote their companions back to the intersection and turn north. The small farmhouse there is dark and silent. They creep into the overgrown yard and cross to the moderately large barn. The doors creak alarmingly as they edge them open, but there is no reaction from the house, nor does a dog come barking. All is still. They enter the barn; the air is stale and devoid of animal smells. It seems to have not been used for some time.

The awake members of the party are able to take a long rest.
OOC:
Restore any lost HP. Reptile, Chase, and Aanbo are able to gain the benefits of a long rest (restoring abilities, selecting spells, etc).
In the morning, tiny birds twitter in the overgrown yard, scratching at the dirt and flitting from weed to weed. The light makes clear what was only suspected in the night: this was a farm, and it has been abandoned.

Theran, Joseph, and Myrtha wake up an hour later than the others, after nine hours, a little groggy and without the benefits of a long rest (so they could take a long rest later in the day if need be).

Each PC gains 20 XP from surviving and escaping.

Theran struggles to sit up, rubbing his eyes and looking around. His eyes settling on Aanbo, he speaks simply: "Drugs?"

Protective Reptile fully heals up by morning break and feeling much better as the poison has left his body. His general toughness prevails. Although he does favor city food over what he may manage to kill and roast but it appears hunting is safer. He really has no plans to return back to his older ways of the hard waste to barely survive from days to day. His blue eyes are ever so watchful.

He watches over wasted Myrtha, but sleep & rest takes him. He is rather used to doing watches and such, but the poison sickness won, and he really needed the rest. He spent some time complicating all that had happened. Soon his face is just a mop of shaggy black hair as he collapses into sleep.

Looking over Theran as he returns to the active living, Reptile answers his question in Imperial, "Yes. Village is nasty." Reptile has his handy battleaxe near him.

"Drugs," Aanbo nods. "Well, we think so, anyway. Didn't get a chance to verify, but anyone who ate something from Bertram was affected. I suspect it was the same thing that Jonbon used on the Jarls. Sadly, the antidote we found in the Temple of Pae isn't very effective against it."

He looks to the others to ensure they are comfortable. "We're just at the edge of Orlane, in an abandoned barn. We could rest here some more and leave together, or those who are feeling up to it can continue our investigation while others remain behind.

"I honestly don't know who we can trust here. Could be that everyone is involved. If that's the case, what should be our next move? Sneak into the temple?"

Myrtha as well resurfaces after a night of empty dreams. She shakes her head slowly and groans as she steps out of sleep, only to bolt up on the improvised straw bedding. "Where are we?" she asked, confused by her unexpected surroundings. As the others speak of poisoning and the happenings of the past evening, her anger begins to simmer. "That bastard Bertram! You knocked him out good, Reptile?" she asked, with a vicious grin, half fury half shame at her own impotence. Then , after a few moments, letting her anger out, she realized that many of her belongings were back at the Inn. "We might as well spy on this temple," she said matter-of-factly, "But at some point I’ll need to pay Bertram a visit. ". For a few moments she observed the abandoned barn in silence, before adding "I guess not all the villagers have turned out crazy, but I guess most of those who haven’t turned bad just took their affairs and left. Or were taken…"
OOC:
Are Myrtha, Joseph and Theran under the secondary effects of the drug? Poisoned and with one level of exhaustion?

Chase looks around at the others. That was a close call last night. Seems like different reactions from the people of town. Something is going on here. We need to find out who she is that Bertram was talking about. Maybe we can make this abandoned farm a base of operations. I definitely think we should be cautious about splitting up. Also Theran, Joseph, and Myrtha need to rest more to get over the poison. I think we should check out the house.
