Against the Cult: Entering Orlane (1.7)

Chase and Joseph, watching intently outside while Reptile and Myrtha continue their preparations, see the doors of the Slumbering Serpent Inn open and a middle-aged human woman emerges and begins sweeping the porch with a branch of broom, whistling to herself. When the porch is cleaned to her satisfaction, she begins to tend to vibrant flower beds that have been set in planter boxes at the edges of the porch. A couple of burly men appear from behind the Inn lugging large burlap sacks. Recalling Theran's account of the events in the other Inn, the two lookouts watch closely, but the sacks do not appear to obviously contain bodies, though they are clearly heavy. The woman opens the front door for the men, smiling and saying something that neither Chase nor Joseph can hear from this distance, and the men squeeze with their sacks into the Inn of the Slumbering Serpent. The woman returns to her flowers, and the two men do not reappear.

Eventually the woman returns inside. A while later, a man of imposing bearing appears, walking up from the direction of the bridge. Like all the people they've seen today, he is unarmed, but a second, grizzled older man following half a step behind him is wearing armor and bearing a large sword at his hip. The two of them walk up to the Inn and the imposing man hesitates for a moment, then knocks. A few moments pass, and then the middle-aged human woman opens the door, all smiles. The imposing man bows and the two of them confer for a few minutes. Chase notices that the imposing man glances over his shoulder several times during the conversation, gesturing...possibly in the direction of the abandoned farm where the party is hiding. But Joseph is convinced that he's actually looking further, toward Ramne's grove. During the whole conversation, the armed man - both the ranger and the rogue are convinced he's a veteran soldier acting as a guard - continually scans up and down the path, monitoring for threats. If he notices the party's preparations, he doesn't show it. At the end of the conversation, the woman shakes her head, the imposing man inclines his head in the barest of bows, and the imposing man and his armed-and-armored companion return back the way they came.

It is only a little while after that when Theran and Aanbo return with their shamrocks and mistletoe.

As the afternoon wanes, where do you each want to position yourselves?

Chase will tell the others what he observed and inform them we have an armored chap and a very big fellow in the mix. They might bring more then we thought. He will try and signal Joseph to warn Ramne to be ready. Then he will resume his post. He will also make other knotholes in other directions to be able to make a quick check each way. Then he will stab arrows into the bales of hay for quick drawing and ready his bow. He will also lay his sword just in case.

Myrtha thanked Chase for the report. She had assumed a position next to the barrels, near the center of the ground floor of the barn. She expected to be in the front line, so she made it easy for her eventual attackers by being quite immediately visible. That would make her companions less visible, if only by contrast. She half expected Reptile to be around the first floor, so they could fight back to back, if needed. She positioned herself behind the barrel closest to the door: she could use it for cover, if attackers started shooting or hurling things at them, and she could kick the barrel towards the assailants if they just charged the barn. After that she put her trust on Reptile's borrowed shield, and her companions resolve. It would be an interesting first test of their mettle against organized assailants.

Buddy Reptile is there with Myrtha to take the brunt of the fight.

Theran hangs back a bit. His best attacks are at close range, but he knows he can't take much of a beating so it's probably best to let the more durable fighters take point.

He holds the borrowed staff tightly, and makes a mental note of where everyone else is located.

An errant thought crosses his mind... What if they don't come for us, and all of our preperation was for nothing? he starts to laugh, but cuts himself short and focuses on being alert. After all... the enemy may not come through the front door. Best to be ready.

Aanbo sits next to Theran, meditating on the upcoming conflict. Each turn of his prayer beads is a mix of emotions struggling against each other, and in time he grabs a fistful of dirt from the barn floor to cast upon his own shoulders. His breathing slows and he aligns his thoughts towards a singular purpose.

Joseph is ready on the roof of the farmhouse with his bow, ready to provide a surprise (hopefully) attack from the side.

The other five have set up in the abandoned barn. Here is a picture so you can better visualize the layout (and fine tune where you want to be). The barn doors (ground and loft) are to the right/east. Four 10'-square animal stalls line the north and south walls, each of them open (they are 10' tall, too). The party has set up a line of barrels as a barricade inside the entrance to the barn (past the snare that Theran set). Myrtha and Reptile stand shoulder-to-shoulder just inside the row of barrels. Behind them, Aanbo and Theran stand ready to assist. Against the west wall is the ladder that leads 15' up to the hayloft. The hayloft runs the length of the building (from the hayloft door in the east wall to the hatch leading down to the ladder at the west wall). The loft has a low railing along the north and south edges, overlooking the animal stalls so that grooms or handlers can fork fresh hay over the rail and directly down to the animals. Up in this loft, Chase has set up a lookout behind some hay bales so that he can snipe antagonists through the loft door as they approach the barn's ground-floor doors. He has also made various spy holes in the east and west walls of the loft so he can pace around and scan in different directions.

Feel free to make adjustments to your positioning if you like, and describe whether each door (ground and loft) is open or closed.

OOC:
So the loft runs the whole length of the barn then?

OOC:
I'm fine with the disposition of the barrels and Myrtha's place in the lower floor. Could you confirm she can move diagonally between the first and second barrel? She doesn't want to be pinned behind a line of impassable obstacles.

Edit: Regarding the doors, I'd say we should leave the ground floor door open a handspan or so, allowing us to see (and hear) approaching figures not moving cautiously. They too can see inside, if they are cautious, and they would probably just see Myrtha and/or Reptile, which might lure them into a false sense of control. Also, if possible, Myrtha would have liked to find a wooden wedge or some equivalent obstacle that the party would have slid under the door, stopping it from closing completely unless the wedge is removed first. That way, they could not close the door from the outside without first dislodging this obstacle, from within.

I like Myrtha's plan. Aanbo is fine where he is.

OOC:
Yes, with opening on either side to toss hay down into the stalls.

OOC:
Okay Chase will stay at the end facing the GG. But will continue to check all avenues of approach.

OOC:
Yes, the diagonals are available for movement between the barrels. I am inclined to say that the move between the barrels is difficult terrain (so it would take 10' of movement, rather than 5'), but I leave that up to you, the players, to decide whether you want squeezing between two objects placed as obstacles to work that way or not. It would apply equally to everyone with a solid physical form: PCs, NPCs, monsters, etc. What do you think?

OOC:
Fine with me, regarding the diagonal passage taking more movement, seems reasonable.

Foreigner Reptile next to Myrtha is awaiting action.

OOC:
Difficult terrain absolutely makes sense.

Side note: If it were me, I might allow an Athletics check to treat it as normal terrain on a success... only because I could absolutely see some athletic folks vaulting over a hurdlebarrel without breaking stride.

Sunset comes, and the evening birds begin their songs.
Twilight descends, and fireflies rise up like a great glowing net.
Bats chuck and chirp, flying in the encroaching darkness eating various bugs.
The temperature falls rapidly, dew condensing on the stalks of the weeds in the overgrown farm yard as fires are kindled in the various occupied buildings within sight (the neighboring farmhouse and the Inn of the Slumbering Serpent); their windows glow with the light of fires, lanterns, and/or candles.
The stars slowly emerge as the twilight darkens into night.

All is still.

The characters without darkvision strain their eyes to see in the pale starlight (no mechanical difficulty - it's light enough to see, but everything is grey and washed out in the dim light).
