At the sign of the flying shape and the warning from Eokoe, Iroven dove to cover and crawled back to the cave. Once inside, he spoke out, "Damn Iomedae's scorn! A dragon here? This is going to be dangerous. We can't explore the valley with this flying around."

"It is the dragon we have been forced to worship by Ashen Swale," explains once the dragon disappears out of view. "She is probably out hunting, or just stretching her wings. It is just her, we have never seen any other dragon."

She looks to Iroven. "She spend most time in her glacial palace. Though she sometime go out to hunt. Your following can be a problem, I suggest hiding them in forest south of her."
OOC:
Last time we had a hex crawl, the understanding was that the following was close behind you, at most a few hours behind. This time you can travel without them and tell them to stay put somewhere.

"That seems wise, use the trees for cover until we can clear a path forward."

OOC:
It's up to you if you want to get the following through the caves now. You have dealt with anything that will be an immediate problem, but there is one small section you haven't explored. Also, you haven't dealt with the fiendish trees, though it is possible to pass without being in danger.

Iroven stood up and said, "Maybe we need to explore other sections of the cave and clear it out for the entire following to come and stay inside. We can then discuss these with the elders about how to approach the dragon situation. What do you think?"

"The cave are surprisingly active, we should at least make sure there are no dangers waiting to ambush" Tomas agrees.

"Come then, let's clear the place out the rest of the way - or at least enough to ensure the Following can pass safely through and seek shelter if needed."

You follow the limestone stairs up and across the bridge into a cavern with unnaturally smooth floor and ceiling. Cave paintings cover its walls. The central painting depicts a white dragon shooting ice from one outstretched claw and fire from the other as people grovel and offer tribute. The painting seems to be magical as it sheds bright light across the room. "Venexus," Eokoe curses.

A large bowl filled with ash rests before the painting, surrounded by offerings (primarily bones, polished stones, carved rocks, long-horned bison skulls, pelts, and clay vessels).

Before you enter the room, Tomas and Artesia senses something amiss, they suspect the bowl is part of some magical trap.

"It appears an offering of some sort is desired here," Koram says, "What do you all make of this?"

"I have heard of this shrines before," Eokoe offers. "Ashen Swale has trapped them, so that anyone not showing proper deference to Venexus will be punished."

You do recall that you found a religious symbol on the dead necromancer outside the castoroides hut.

"So if we remove the shrine *that* dragon will be weaker?" Tomas asks with a shudder.

Eokoe shrugs. "Don't know how it works," they say. "If nothing else it would send a signal. Not that I think many come here to give worship. These caves have a certain reputation. That's the reason we came here. A place no one would be fool enough to pass through. Luckily we were wrong and you were here."
OOC:
It is a Religion or Arcana dc 19 to figure out the trap.

Koram takes out the religious symbol they found earlier. Artesia had said it was from the Mendevian Crusades - perhaps a worthy offering for the shrine. He places it with the other tokens and stands back.
OOC:
I failed to see the spellbook in that post with the religious symbol - is it okay to say Koram snatched that up? What spells are still in it?

Artesia considers the altar carefully.

Iroven looked at the wall paintings depicting the dragon and other subjugated people. He then listened to Eokoe explanation while moving around the shrine, trying to notice the different things that were placed there. He avoided the bowl of offering, wondering what it might trigger.

Eokoe gasps as you take out the holy symbol. "The symbol of Venexus!" he hisses. Wide eyed he's wondering why you're carrying it.

With the holy symbol you are able to approach the shrine. You are unsure what would have happened without it though. In the offering bowl you see among the mostly mundane items an uncut diamond that looks to be valuable.
OOC:
The armor on the dead man with armor was from the Mendevian crusades, the symbol you don't know (until now that is).

You could have taken the spellbook, it is mostly destroyed, but you are able to read False Life, Ray of Enfeeblement, Grim Tendrils and Chill Touch
