"That would be great." Ane says to Garrett. "It would be good if we could determine if she got to Sholeh. And, maybe, who she spoke to there. Who saw her last."

Ane is keen to meet more people if Garrett is willing to have them along, else she does not know where to start, but may head down to the docks to see if she can find out more about the package.
OOC:
I am happy to stick together and work as a team, or to split up. Together is more fun, but, from an efficiency point of view, asking around separately would probably yield more results.

I would prefer that "ooc" to be an in-character statement; to me it seems like something Ane really would say to the other characters.

Generally, a sore spot for me is when players say things "out of character" that their characters actually would say in character.

Asha
vagueGM says:
"A 'jewel khanduq'?" Ane says to Asha, changing the subject. She knows her friend is keen on jewels, but thoughts of specialist magic stores are now filling Ane's mind.
"Yeah, apparently they buy and sell all sorts of unique jewels. I'm hoping to find the one that was stolen from me." Ane knows what Asha is referring to, but she looks to Garrett and removes her lamp from her satchel. There's a large setting on the side that looks like it used to hold a gem.

"Ane learns magic from studying spellbooks, but I draw my magic from this. I think I might be limited without the missing jewel. I've had this as long as I can remember, but I don't really remember things from before it was stolen from me," she admits to Garrett.

After tucking it back into her bag, she says, "Anyways, if we are up in that Ward, it would be nice to look around. But first things first, let's find some clues about Dalana!"
mathias0077 says:
Garrett looking at the other two"We can go ask some of my contacts and maybe get a lead on Dalana or I could go if y'all have other ideas." From his time with the ghosts Garrett has some good contacts who run shops that buy found items and hear a lot of good info.
Hearing Garrett's suggestion she says, "Seems like a good idea! I think we should stick together since those chili peppers keep popping up."

Gerrett will nod"Let's head the way she would probably have headed. We can stop by the shop Wonderous Things and have a chat with my buddy Charles. If she moved through there he will know about it. Just be warned he is missing an ear. He doesn't like to talk about or people Staring at it."

In the morning chill of a desert sunrise, with seaside fog hanging low in the Hook Ward, you start north through the city. After the wall to Wizard Ward, the fog is mostly gone.

It's hard to shake a feeling that you're being followed in Wizard Ward, but it's early and nobody really is about.

Garrett will look at the ladies "Do you feel that? I swear we are being followed. Chilli peppers in the mist maybe?" He keeps his eyes and ears open as they move on.

Quote:
Just north of Wizard Ward is the Quill Ward where scholars, scribes, and learned sages congregate. Much of the city’s actual administrative work gets done here, and it is also the ward with the largest concentration of libraries (though most are private collections only). As it is also one of the quieter areas of the city, it is the home for many peaceful inns and rooming houses favored by travelers. The Ward also is "warded" against fires; no conflagration can spread here.

You pass through the gate from Wizard into Quill Ward without incidents. The streets are as quiet in the sabbans of scholars as they were in the wizardly wayfares; both types of people tend to be night owls, not morning larks.

The fog is entirely cleared this far uphill from the harbor, and looking back that way you can see the frothy top of the dissipating mist. Your feet (except for Ane) pad softly on the cobbled streets.

That feeling of being-followed has eased as well.

You have been walking for nearly an hour basically straight uphill and it would be a good time to sit and rest for a few minutes. Garrett spies a little coffeeshop that appears to be open for business, but only one customer is in there: an old gentleman with a very long grey goatee that reaches down to his waist. The old fellow is wearing the black robes of a legal scribe. He sits and sips his coffee, not looking at you as you pause by the open front of the shop.

Ane looks around for any sign of Chilli Peppers, she is not sure if she does or does not want to find them following again, but does feel disappointed when she does not spot them.

Earlier, Ane had excitedly tried to explain to Asha about learning spells from each other. That she had been offered a spell that sounded very much like what her friend knew. But that conversation got nowhere, Asha's way of learning magic seems very different, and Ane is interested to see if getting more 'jewels' would prove to be another way to learn more spells. She does not know how that would work, but is keen to find out.

Ane is also slightly distracted by showing off her new ability. She has been walking around as a tall man since perfecting the spell of Disguise. She still have not had to cast it under pressure, but has had fun messing with it in safe environs. Being a man has proved useful for getting people to take her seriously, though that might also be attributed to most of the people she tried it on having known her as a little kid. Ane is concentrating on making the poofy-trousered legs move and contact the ground as she 'walks', though there is still an element of 'moon-walk' about it if she gets distracted.

"What do you think of this?" She asked her companions —in a deep voice— after playing a trick on them and pretending to be a stranger asking questions for as long as she could keep it up.

Garrett taking a seat with a black coffee will sat"Nice trick, that should come in handy."

Asha

Asha gives Garrett a nod to confirm that she noticed the feeling as well. "Maybe ... although they were so forward in their approach the first time, it could be someone else this time," she whispers to her companions.

Asha is still wearing her new clothes and although she has accummulated a bit of ash on her skin since her days at the spa ... is it just from spending too much time at Inki's, or ... she still looked much fresher than usual. This had garnered a lot more attention, so she wondered if it was just that, but the encounter with the red robes still weighed on her mind.
At the shop, she joins Garrett for a coffee and smirks at Ane, "I mean, it looks great, but you're gonna need to do something about your voice."

The old man sipping his coffee also is reading — actually, editing — a scroll.

He's not going to interact with you if you leave him alone, so this could be just a quick opportunity to rest your legs before continuing up toward the khanduqs. It's early and the streets are empty. Except for cats. Three of them have formed an aggressive triangle on the cobbles outside the coffeeshop, and seem to be trying to determine who should pounce first at whom.

Asha
As Asha drinks her coffee she considers the old man for a moment and wonders if he comes here often.

"Excuse me Sir," she asks, "do you come here this early in the mornings often? If so, we're wondering if you saw our friend pass by a few days ago? She's dark-skinned with long grey dreadlocks and walks with a silver painted staff. She would have been heading north carrying a package around this time. Perhaps she stopped here for a drink as we have? She never returned so we are trying to retrace her path hoping to find clues about her whereabouts."

The old scribe looks startled to be spoken to, but retains his composure. " The amlakkar detained the woman you speak of," he answers. " She was arraigned yesterday afternoon. I was there and I am reviewing the transcript of her hearing."
Mar 28, 2025 11:13 am
Listening to gentleman"Can you tell us why she was detained? Or maybe we could look at that transcript for a bit?"
Mar 28, 2025 9:08 pm
A little vertical crease forms between the old gentleman's bushy grey eyebrows. "The pashah's court business is secret," he answers. "Only the scribes and advocates — and the pashah's vizier — review the transcripts." He holds the scroll now in a way that suggests he would tuck it into his own body if he could. Very protective of it. "Is the woman a friend of yours, you said? She needs an advocate."

Outside the shop, two of the cats resolve their standoff with a very loud collision of claws and teeth. The third cat, a fluffy but slightly patch-furred white cat, washes its face while the other two fight.

Asha
Asha's eyebrows furrow, mirroring the old man's response, feeling defensive. She can feel her anger brewing but holds it back for the most part. "Relax old man," she says a bit shortly, "we won't spy your scrolls without your permission. But surely her crime is public knowledge. How can anyone advocate for her without knowing what she's been accused of," she says.

After a deep breath, she says a bit more calmly, "We are friends and would be keen to help, but unless she is being detained justly, why would we get involved for fear of being unjustly detained ourselves merely by association?"
Mar 30, 2025 12:03 am
The old scribe has a worried face. "How could you suggest that the amlakkar would detain someone unjustly? All know that the pashah and his servants are wise."
