You've heard that Ginseng is in the ward captain's lockup, down in Osiir Sabban. Getting there from your homes in Eraré will require you to ascend two stories from your cool and shadowy dirt streets to the top of the sabban wall, then follow the sun-seared wall-top road to Osiir. Big Zhad says that you need to get Ginseng out of the lockup before they make him spill the tea on all of Big Zhad's plans that Ginseng knows. Big Zhad trusts you. Don't fail him.

Some people do use the sewers to move between sabbans, but for all the reasons you might think, it is not a preferred way for lawful folks.
There also are a few gates in the walls, but for each gate there is a fee, so if you are moving more than one sabban away it is cheaper to ascend to the walls.
There is no real risk associated with doing all this (at least the daylight routes), it's just a small expense that each of you can bear. Which route you choose will, however, impact what you might encounter. Wall top folks are generally hoitier than gate passers.

You know ginger-haired and scrawny Ginseng, kind of … he is the mouthpiece whom Big Zhad usually uses to assign you tasks. A bit of an attitude on him haughty like. But evidently competent as he's higher than you in the power structure. You think? Knows more than you, anyway.
This time the task to rescue Ginseng came through Ravvok, a thickbodied older man who perpetually scowls. That's just his expression, he's polite in his speech.

Buruzg waited impatiently near the stairway, coppers in hand. The line to ascend wasn't long, but there was no shade were he was, and he wanted to be sure the others found him quickly. He assumed he was first. They boys would know him, but the other two he had not yet met. He had their rough descriptions though. "Ahsa, mysterious, attractive, ...but always dirty for some reason. Ane ...Ane, I forget but she will be with the dirty one."
The two young lads could be quite sneaky when they wanted to be. Perhaps they waited in the shade for the others while he stood out in the sun sweating like a labourer. Standing up stright from the wall, "Well, I have done laboured many days and no bit of sun would wilt this flower."
Looking briefly up at the hot sun, Buzrug slowly leaned back agains the sabban wall and thought, "Ravvok did say at Highsun, didn't he?"

Garrett stands is the shade as it is to his liking. He has always preferred darkness. It is cool and comforting to him. He spots Buruzg leaning on the wall looking a little impatient. He has yet to see Ahsa but he knows she makes her own time. Garrett leaves the shadows and moves up to Buruzg. Garrett movements have a feline like grace to them. "Well met. Buruzg I assume? I am Garrett Jaxx and I have seen you around. I was wondering how long it would be before we actually met. I see you work for the big man too. The others should be along shortly."

Ane is a bit fussy about keeping clean, even so, her simple Dishdasha and Keffiyeh are more 'sand-colored' than 'white', but she does her best. Beneath the robe her bare feet float a foot above the dirt, and the robe swirls gently around her, the breeze keeping her cool. The extra height and male clothing could let her pass for a man, especially with her face covered, as it is. She is plain and easily overlooked compared to her often-companion, Asha, she is not sure how she feels about that.
She does not know the rest of this crew, she ponders the meaning of them being brought together like this: Is Big Zhad having more 'staff-issues' than just the capture of Ginseng? She does not know much about the crime boss' business, but surely he has better people for this sort of job?
Ane straighten her robe as she approaches the meeting-point, but hesitates before making herself known.

Despite the old tattered clothes and dusty layer of soot, Asha's approach draws a few eyes, as it often does. It's not just her looks, she also has a relaxed and authentic charisma about her, when her temper is under control. Asha is aware of the effect that she has on some people, and uses it to her advantage under the right circumstance, but she doesn't try to flaunt it. In fact, part of why she doesn't clean off the dirt is to blunt the effect. It's not always an advantage to catch everyone's attention. Besides, even when she cleans herself up, the soot inevitably returns after a few hours ... something related to her powers. At least, that's the excuse she gives Ane, she thinks with a smile. Asha glances towards the tall figure next to her. Ane was helping her understand her powers ... and struggling to accept the mess. Asha was grateful for Ane's help, even if her temper said otherwise sometimes.
Her gold and brown eyes settle on the two men by the stairway. Recognizing them as members of their new crew, she adjusts her path to join them, but doesn't expect her friend's hesistation and bumps into her instead, leaving a dusty print on Ane's Dishdasha.
Tsking, she whispers shortly, "Ane, what are you doing!? You recognize Garrett, and that must be the new guy. Let's go!"
Stepping past Anemone, Asha walks up to the two men. She gives Garrett a smiling nod and quietly introduces herself to Buruzg.

Small and unassuming, and clothed in somewhat tired and simple garb, her face partially covered by her headscarf, Jasra passes through the crowd like a leaf on a breeze. Her blue blue eyes, her only striking feature, catch sight of a few familiar faces and she gravitates towards them. None of them known overly well - she was a new after all. Not to the city or its seedier sides, but to the crew. For a moment she wondered why, Big Zhad would have entrusted her to be a part of this job if it was so important... perhaps he felt her novelty might be of some benefit, or her small stature. But the questions quickly left her mind as her attention was captured by the assembling group. Buruzg was hard to miss, and Asha was certainly memorable in her own way. Garrett she had seen before, once. But Ane was unfamiliar to her, at least by name.
She approaches the group confidently but respectfully and offers a small bow, touching her fingers to her forehead, lips and heart in greeting. "Ravvok sends his greetings, may the gods find you well," she says in a small but clear voice.

"I was 'observing'." Ane replies to Asha's back before gliding up to join and greet the rest.
Moments later their party is complete. "Greetings to you as well. 'Jasra', I presume." Ane has done what research she could on the new group, but does not voice her concerns at this time.
"Have any of you done a prison break before?" She asks quietly.

Garrett looks at the rest of the crew and nods. Seems like a pretty good selection. He has seen everyone even if they don't know it. "I haven't done a prison break before. Maybe we just case the place and use our exotic looking crew members for a distraction."

"Good. Good. We are now all here. Well met on what I hope is an auspcious day. I am Buruzg and no, I have not broken any prisons." Buruzg pauses a moment to let his joke sink in and continues on, "But, I have liberated many goods from their incarceration." Looking the other's over, "I am sure we are capable and can do what has been asked." As he turns to pay his toll and ascend the stair, Buruzg says, "Let us ascend and be on the way to Osiir. We can talk while we journey there. It is not overly long from here but we can talk along the way."

Asha greets Jasra and then listens as plans are discussed.
She raises an eyebrow at Garrett's comment, "Who are you calling exotic?" After a pause, she admits with sly smile, "But I may be able to draw some attention if needed."
Smiling more earnestly at Buruzg's joke, she also responds to Anemone's question, echoing that she has never been involved in a jail break.
As they begin to ascend the stairs, she suggests to the others, "It could be useful to acquire some guard uniforms. Some of us could poses as guards, with the more guilty looking crew members," Asha shoots a teasing look toward Garrett, "acting as newly captured prisoners. That might get us in at least."

Ane's demeanour has lightened dramatically as she 'steps' onto the sabban wall, she is not pleased about the waste of coin, but does look around with obvious pleasure at the open space, she has no desire to be incarcerated —even as a pretense.
"That could work." She says to Asha. "And could help us find Ginseng. Though that still leaves the issue of getting out. Isn't that the hard part?"

The wall top road is on the verge of bustling, many porters hastening to deliver their cargo and get out of the hot sun. A few more leisurely carrying palanquins, the wealthy in their shaded comfort like to slowly take the view. All around, buildings rise above the walls — it is only the destitute who dwell in the dank shadows below the wall tops, those with means live in their towers enjoying the fresh sea breeze of day time and the cold desert breeze of the night. Many buildings have cargo entrances from the wall road. Most rise two or three floors above the two-story walls, but some are taller. The padishah's palace looms large in the distance, unmistakably ornate with gold leaf domes and sparkling glass skylights.
You notice a group of four red-robed people, their sun-burnt shaven heads and faces tattooed with sigils. They blatantly clock you as they approach.

None of you "know" the red robes. But you've heard of them. The Red Wizards of Thay. Merchants of magic. Purveyors of poisons. Dangerous folk, with an interest in unusual people.

Ane is very keen to learn more magic... but she is pretty convinced these guys are not the way she wants to go about doing that... though if someone offered an introduction... she is not sure what she would do then.

The wall top is about thirty feet wide, so there's room for people to pass in either direction with a median space for vendors' carts. The red robes deliberately cross that median between a fig cart and a wine cart, and close distance toward you as you're walking. They're getting quite close and someone has time to say one thing before they'll be definitely in earshot. They're obviously focused on the group of you.
Dec 14, 2024 1:10 pm
The red robes are right there. Not quite in your faces, but they've stopped right in your path and a little too close.

"Uh, yeah. Get away if you can." Ane says quietly to Garret and her other companions, but it seems it might be too late for that.
Ane is more than a little scared, both that they saw right though her 'disguise' but mainly that they cared enough to be talking to her. She sags a little bit and her clothes fall still and flat.
She knows quite a few languages, but Thayan is not one of them —wouldn't it have been cool, though, if she could answer them in their own language— so she devolves to Trade: "Visiting a friend." She 'answers' (technically true), as politely as one can in Trade. "Can we ... is there some way I can help you." A genuine offer to help seems the best way to deal with this if possible.
Ane is not the best talker, she tends to overthink things, but does not want to draw attention to the rest of her group if she can avoid it.

Asha has a bad feeling about these red robed figures and senses a similar tension from the rest of the group, particularly Ane since she knows her the best. She gets the impression that they are referring to the crew when they say "assortment of knick knacks," which makes her feel even more uncomfortable.
Ane's hurried comment confirms her feelings, but she doesn't want to abandon her friend. Instead she thinks of a distraction so they can all flee.
She starts by making eye contact with the figures with a polite smile, acknowledging them. As Ane answers their question, Asha looks distractedly towards the vendors, appearing to browse. Suddenly she let's her eyes and mouth widen, as though in surprise and then with a scream, points to an imagined threat behind the red robes.
POOF!
Smoke explodes from Asha in all directions, it's billowing clouds blotting out everyone's view nearby.
She tries to grab Ane's and Garrett's hands, the two closest to her so not to get separated and yells, "Run!"

Not sure what the others are thinking, particularly the ones she isn't able to grab.

Buruzg did not like when the eyes of the Red Robes fell upon him. He liked their immediate interest even less, and when they crossed the median to stand before the group to block the way, he could not help but surupticioutly make the sign again the evil eye. He had some few dealings with Thayans before, but never with a Red Robe. They were to be avoided lest ill befall you.
Before he could work enough moisture back into his mouth to speak, Ane confronted them and then smoke billowed from behind with a shout from Asha. He turned his head just in time to see her move back the other way into the cloud. With a curse, he grabbed at Ane and ran after. "Back down the stairs!"

"Aaa!" Ane exclaims in genuine surprise as she is grabbed on the one hand by Asha and the other hand by Buruzg, and dragged backwards towards the stairs. "This is not good," she says in a loud whisper to her comrades. "Do you think its just coincidence that we ran into them and they took an interest in us?" Almost as an afterthought she adds, casting a quick glance behind her, "I'm not a big believer in coincidence..."

Lightning touches Ane and Jasra, singeing small holes in their garments. They dash out of the smoke cloud into the daylight, along with Buruzg and Garrett. You confront a small crowd of excited people who step away to make room for you to continue fleeing. Up above and beyond them, in the sky, a small figure standing on a shining glass plate speeds toward you: one of the padishah's patrolling wizards. Probably a mile away, not quite halfway across the city, but getting closer.
Lightning wraps around Asha, knocking her flat on her face. She's caught at the edge of the smoke cloud, behind you. The cloud is very slowly dissipating.
In the cloud, the Red Robes are coughing and shouting in Thayan. They sound disoriented.

Asha screams for real this time as the lightning surges through her body. After collapsing at the edge of the slowly dispersing cloud of smoke, she lifts her head in confusion, fear and pain in her eyes, the soot on her face had formed into a pattern of streaked bolts. Hearing Garrett's voice, her eyes show a sliver of hope. Despite her muscles still being rigid and convulsing, she reaches an arm up towards him.

Ane sometimes tends to be... well, she would like to call it: 'considered', but others might call it 'slow to react'. She is still contemplating what is —or was— going on with the Red Robes conversation when the reality of the situation settles in and she sees Asha on the ground.
"Are you hurt?" She asks her friend, fluttering around now that her hand has been let go of, and not doing a whole lot to help. She looks to Garrett thankfully as he comes to their aid.
Ane is taking in the scene, all the details of where the Red Robes are, the incoming patrol officer, and the curious crowd. These facts will come in useful later, when we can formulate a plan. She tells herself.

The sea breeze is thinning the smoke cloud and the Red Robes in it become vaguely visible. They're all coughing, the biggest one bent over with hands on knees.
There is a gradually-getting-louder humming noise as the patrolling wizard gets closer on his flying glass plate. That noise makes the crowd of onlookers nervous and they all begin to move away.

Her whole body is sore from the electric shock, but her senses begin to return as she sees the others watching the approaching patrol. When Buruzg curses at the Thayans, she notices they still seem preoccupied by the smoke so says, "I appreciate the sentiment Buruzg, those Thayans deserve far worse than the Padishah's wrath, but let's get out of here. We don't want to be explaining ourselves to the magister, it could take hours. And we'll need to hurry too. We'll need to backtrack and take a longer route to Osiir now."

"Quite right." Ane nods in agreement when Asha says 'let's get out of here'.
"Quickly, through here." She motions the group down a small alley, filled with refuse and mostly blocked by broken barrels that would make it hard to traverse for people larger than themselves.
As the last of them enter, Ane stops, focuses a bit and moves her hands in a raising, painting motion, and an image of a stone wall forms at the mouth of the alley. If you concentrate on it you can still see the people in the road outside, but at first glance it looks like a dead-end. Presumably, from the other side, it looks like there is no alley at all and people will pass it by.
"That won't help us from above." Ane says. "But hopefully the patrol will stick to the street-level... or not look in this exact direction?"
Depending on what happens with Buruzg ibn Shahryar, she may want to watch from a distance and be on hand to help him out if needed.

You travel through alleys toward Inki's. Behind you, Ane's phantasm fades with her interest in it.
Below the walls the streets are nearly permanently shadowed by walls and buildings, except very near noon. It is breezeless, dank, and not as cool as you might hope; the heat of sunlight somehow runs down the sides of the buildings. Not sweltering, but always verging on sweat. Smells like onions, armpits, coriander, and fried meat.
The sheesha shop is bustling. A very bored looking bouncer, massive and clean shaven, stands firmly planted by the entrance. He looks you up as you approach, then grins a smile from which some daring soul removed one tooth. "Ane" he says. She knows him, kind of, as a decent kind of thug. He gestures you to enter.
Inside is dark and actually cool and pungent with weed. Intoxicated people lounge about talking nonsense or staring blankly into space. Inki's is locally renowned for not offering products that cause paranoia or jitters.

"Far too interested for my coin," Jasra adds from her perch behind one of the barrels. "They seemed to hone right in on us, and not in a friendly way." She checks the barrel and makes sure its solid and stable, then hops up on it and takes a seat. "I think we may have to take a more 'scenic' route to our destination, but that's not going to help us with time.... I wonder how Buruzg is faring with the Magister?"

"So it wasn't my imagination." Ane says as they make their way to Inki's. She is both worried and a little excited that wizards of that caliber were paying attention to her —and they were talking to me, she thinks. "I have heard bad stories about them, though. I don't think we want to get involved... though it would have been interesting to hear what they wanted?"
At Inki's she is feeling a little jittery after the adrenaline and the flight, and the now-sudden-waiting. Without thought for whether it is a good idea in the middle of a job, she orders a pipe (hooka?/shisha?), offering to share with her companions, both new and old.

As Garrett helps Asha into Inki's and helps her sit he looks around the room looking for possible chili peppers. He will refrain from partaking of anything in here he prefers to keep a clear mind. he looks to the others"Be easy in here. We might have to think quick on our feet."
Dec 22, 2024 6:44 am
Asha eases into a seat from Garrett's arms, "Thanks for the help! I think things are starting to loosen up now, but hellfire," she curses, "I'm still sore!"
She takes in a deep breath and exhales slowly, it almost looks like smoke comes out her mouth. Hearing Ane's offer she gladly agrees to share, "Just what I need to take the edge off."
Then she apologizes for acting so quickly with the chilli peppers, she uses Garrett's moniker with a grin. "I'm curious what they wanted too, but I was worried if we waited to find out we would have been in their snare. I hope Buruzg isn't having any troubles dealing with them and the Magister."

Jasra plops into a seat and folds her legs under her so that she's almost as tall as some of her companions. Then a thought comes to mind that leaves her troubled, and she blurts out, eyes wider than normal, "If he wasn't detained, would he know where to look for us?" She looks from one of her companions to another, hoping there might have been a backup plan she wasn't aware of.

"This is where he said we should meet." Ane reassures Jasra.
"I don't know him well, but he is not a magic user, so they are unlikely to detain him, right? It clearly wasn't him that did the... the smoke and then the lightning... Gosh, I hope no one else was hurt by that spell, it was pretty irresponsible of those Thayans to cast that blind like that."

Looking the Mage in the eye despite the crick it was giving him to do so, "Good Sir, thank you for coming so quickly! I saw those Thayans accosting travelers on the wall! There was a great smoke and they cast lightnings, striking down one woman who was carried away. Surely this is not right!

"Is the way clear? It would be fastest to go the way we had originally intended. Otherwise, we can try to get through one of the gates or perhaps via the docks?" She looks around at her companions for their thoughts.

Garrett keeping an eye on his surroundings as always without looking like he is asks Burugz "Did they do anything with the chili peppers or are they still lurking?"

"We could borrow a boat." Ane suggests before thinking about it. She does not know if the others are OK on the water, but she grew up on- and around boats. She does not want to involve her family in this affair, but there are always a bevvy of unused, small boats they can use if they put them back afterwards.
Jan 3, 2025 10:00 am
Buruzg gets a little thrill of excitement at the prospect on not getting collared by the mage. Not too excited of course, as he was an old hand at the smooth talking. Ducking his head in a short bow, mostly to ensure any hint of a smile was not exposed, Buruzg thanked the Mage for his performing his duty and hurried back down off the wall, only taking the time for a quick glance back to see the Mage floating smoothly through the air towards the Red Robes. Rather than gloat, he turned away quickly to be off the wall and out of sight as soon as possible.
Jan 4, 2025 4:30 am
"I like that idea," Asha nods to Anemone. "And if those red robes are looking for more trouble, I doubt they would expect us to get around them that way."
She looks to the others to see if everyone agrees.

"i like anything that keeps us away from those guys," Jasra adds, casting a quick glance back towards the entrance 'just to make sure.' Jan 4, 2025 10:05 am

After you finish your meal you head down toward the docks. Will you borrow or "borrow" a boat?
Jan 4, 2025 4:06 pm
Garrett always "borrows". He looks at the others "We are going to borrow a boat right? I don't like paying for things I don't need to. I will bring it back." That last part might not be true.
Jan 4, 2025 9:11 pm
Jas looks over the assortment of vessels until her eye falls on one that's particularly nondescript - well used, minimally maintained but unloved, tired but serviceable, and utterly unremarkable. She rests one hand on Garrett's arm and points with the other. "What do you think of... that one?" she asks, then glances to the rest of her compatriots for their thoughts.
Jan 4, 2025 9:53 pm
"I am not a boat a guy so as good as any I would say," Looks to the others for their input.
Jan 5, 2025 3:38 am
Asha looks to Anemone and Buruzg who both know a lot more about boats than she does.
Jan 5, 2025 8:37 am
Ane grew up around here and knows of boats that are too small, or too unreliable to leave the harbour, her sister and she used to use them all the time for joyrides close to the shore. They would not be missed —she is sure her father is out, anyway, and would not object to her borrowing one of the family's derelicts, but she does not want to involve the family if she does not have to.
Besides, she is more than a little high right now, so she is willing to go along with Jasra's suggestion, assuming the girl knows what she is talking about.

You get in the boring little boat. It's a bit crowded but not going to sink, there's a decent amount of gunwale above the water and the harbor is calm.
The setting sunlight sparkles on the water, rose and gold. You wasted a while relaxing at Inki's. Big Zhad might be upset; he said this was an urgent task. You'll worry about that later. Jailbreaks are better at night, anyway.
With Ane directing you, even stoned out of her mind, there's little risk in rowing the boat along the wharfs to the other sabban. You clumsily secure it to a dock and clamber up out of it.
The dock is deserted, there are a few barrels and crates but no workers as it's dinner time and everyone's off work. You can see the lock-up looming up above the other buildings of the sabban, near the wall. Probably a few minutes to walk over there, but then you'll have to get up on the wall again if you want to use the main entrance that opens onto the top of the wall.

Ane hates being high, she doesn't know why she does it. Especially when it will interfere with her clear thinking during a job.
To try to freshen up she makes her way to the front of the boat and leaps smoothly off, head first, into the water, dives deep and —as though she has practiced this— resurfaces at the rear, grabs the rail and pulls herself back in. Her robe clings to her body for a moment, before the breeze (what 'breeze'? it is calm) quickly fills out the fabric and dries it before they reach the dock.
Feeling somewhat better, Ane picks up her head-scarf and tosses it around her close cropped hair.
"Does anyone have a plan to get inside?" She asks. "I assume we don't want to use the front door?" She has not studied the holding cells, not having thought she would ever need to go there.

After getting out of the boat Garrett will say to Ane question. "Maybe we should look low first and work our way up looking for a way to enter." Looking at Asha "Or maybe a little more of that smoke if need be?"
Jan 7, 2025 4:05 am
Asha spends most of the boat ride leaned back staring at the colors of the sunset. She was still dwelling in the relaxation of the indulgence at Inki's. Her mind was less clear but he body felt much better than after the shock.
Back on shore, sneaking towards the lock-up, Asha considers Ane and Garrett's suggestions.
"Best we look for a low level entrance. The smoke will likely catch people's attention, especially after what happened this afternoon. Better to save it as a last resort on the way back out during the escape."

"Do you think the guard noticed the rest of us?" Ane asks Buruzg.
"A repeat of the 'smoke' could make it look like it is the Thayans —your 'Chilly Peppers', or Red Cloaks," she adds to Garrett, for clarity, "— who are to blame ... again. They have a reputation as trouble-makers."
Ane has tried to keep a low profile, and going against the guards directly is likely to attract more attention than she is completely comfortable with. May as well turn the mess from earlier in to an advantage.

Asha furtively peeks around the next alley that heads towards the lower levels of the lock-up looking for an opportunity to get in.

Garret's cunning and knowledge of buildings guide him to …
a sewer grate in the middle of the plaza that lays at the foot of the lock up. Probably the city storm sewer also is the outlet for whatever foulness the guards and prisoners produce. And probably there is a route that way to enter the building unseen. Though it would be optimal to access the sewers via a less public opening, as this one is quite visible to passersby. At least the first two floors of the donjon do not have any windows overlooking the plaza.

Jan 9, 2025 3:36 pm
Spurred by Garrett's looking low, Ane scans the upper floors for a way in, or, more likely, a way out in case they need it later. She tends to think in terms of more dimensions than others do. Most people don't look up, or think about that plane, but most people don't have the same level of access to 'up' as she does and anything she finds may not prove all that useful for the rest of the group.
Jan 9, 2025 9:58 pm
Ane's perusal of the upper stories indicates there are numerous windows, too large to reasonably open onto prisoners' cells. They must be to the barracks rooms of the amlakkar. Probably not the way to go for a jailbreak?
There is of course the roof, but that's about the furthest in the building that you could possibly get from the basements where the prisoners are locked.

As Garrett and Jasra discuss the directions, Asha lights a small torch to help illuminate the markings on the sewer walls. The flame initially comes to life in her finger tips, without any flint or fuel, before she passes it to the torch with a subtle gesture. The dim light also lets her keep a better eye on the dark tunnels behind them and anything that might be lurking there.

Ane is relieved by the addition of light, not that the sewers were pitch dark, or anything, small patches of light filter in from the gender-neutral-personal-covers in the street above, but that is not enough to see comfortably by.
Ane has hiked the skirt of her robe up to her knees to keep it out the ... muck on the ground. She hates being in contact with the ground, it makes her feel vulnerable and heavy. She has to bend, but with her bare feet visible it becomes clear just how small she is, she can't be more than 5" tall.
"Oh! I sure hope I don't step in something..." She says hopelessly.

Ane is less interested in what they are saying, she is more interested in whether there are people in the pipe, or whether it sounds like they are staying at the other end, or whether they are just passing by on a patrol.
If they are stationed there she can try to use magic to put them to sleep, that way they don't attract attention and no one needs know anyone was ever here.

Asha agrees with a silent nod. It looks like a straight path up the pipe, so she snuffs out her torch so the light doesn't foreshadow their approach, and then follows Garrett's lead, climbing as quietly as she can. She feels the excitement of the situation building in her body now, countering any lingering effects from Inki's, and wonders what they will need to deal with at the end of the pipe.

"What do you see?" Ane asks quietly as her companions start to climb. "If we need to get past them I can try put them to sleep." When the others saw her create an illusion of a wall earlier in the alley she made that look effortless, but she does not sound/feel as confident about this spell. It depends what they find up there. The chimney ascent is nothing for Ane's Levitation, but we can't all be crammed, in battery, into the head of the pipe unless there is space.

Jasra makes sure her gear is well situated and limbers her fingers and shoulders for the climb. She's done more difficult ones more times than she can count, and she can already visualize herself monkeying up the inside of the pipe, but the last thing she wants is for something important, noisy, or both, to fall out during her ascent.
She watches, waiting for a sign from the first ones up that it's time to go.

Garrett has done this kind of infiltration work in the past and feels right at home in the cramped pipe. He knows there is always a way in to where ever the job leads him. He will get to the top and pause and listen for the slightest sound for 5-10 minuets. The slightest sound could tip you off. A sneeze, cough, sigh, fart you just never know. You don't want to just go for it anything could be waiting for you.

"Well I guess there is only one way out." Garrett will squeeze out and check the area.
Jan 24, 2025 3:16 pm
Holding her breath and trying not to be sick, Asha follows Garrett up through the trough into the room above. There must have been a cleaner way to do this, she thinks to herself with an expression of disgust. She would have complained out loud but she recognizes the need to be quiet now that they're inside the building.
Jan 24, 2025 5:33 pm
Jas stifles a gag, and once it appears the coast is clear, follows the others through the butt holes in the cover. Not for the first time does she thank the gods for her slight frame.
Jan 25, 2025 6:07 am
Ane is not as slim as Jasra, but still has no trouble squeezing through the hole, the seat is cleaner than the pipe/tunnel they were in, but she still feels disgusting and finds herself looking around for the showers in a foolish desire to get clean. She is relieved to be in open space again, compared to the underground the rooms of the prison feel spacious, but she know this feeling is fleeting and soon she will be desperate to get outside again.
It would have been easy to put the guards to sleep from below, and Ane really wants to practice that sleep spell she found tucked into an old book. But it would have been suspicious for a group of guards to be sleeping in the lav.

Ane is glad of the head-scarf, and even more of the dirty state of what she is wearing. She wouldn't want the guard to have been able to identify them later.

Jas glances down the corridor checking for more guards, then scampers lightly down the hallway to the right, peeking in each cell and looking for one that seems unoccupied.
Jan 27, 2025 6:17 pm
The cells are unlit. Peeking through the narrow grated windows reveals nothing of their occupancy, only darkness. Anyone imprisoned here is still, perhaps drowsing. You'll need to call Ginsing's name and get a response to have a hope of finding him.

"See who else is in there." Ane says to Ahsa, indicating the cells. "Maybe, if they don't look too bad, we let them all out after we have secured Ginseng? Create a distraction? And take some of the heat and suspicion off Ginseng? What do you think?"
She then keeps watch near the corridor entrance for more guards.
If he can get out that way, I say we get him out, then the last of us unlocks the doors for the rest of the prisoners (if they don't look like they will cause too much mayhem (though Ane's concern, there, might not be shared by the others:)).

The corridor forms a square about eighty feet on a side, with ten cells along the inner wall on each side of the square. Many of the cells have one or more people sleeping in their dark confines. The people wake up in response to your whispering and start to ask questions, Like "who are you" and "where's the guard" and "will you let me out"? It gets pretty noisy by the time you get to the far side of the square, where there is a padlocked double door in the outside wall.

Garrett will head to that cell."We are here for you bub. Asha, Anemone, Jasra over here." Garrett will open the cell door. "Let us get these other cells open. it is your lucky day chaps."

Feb 1, 2025 4:34 pm
The guard's key ring is heavy and jingles as you unlock each cell, leaving the padlocks hanging. The prisoners are slow to rise from their places, apparently bewildered by their fortune. Even Ginsing moves haltingly. As he emerges into the dim hallway the various bruises on his face and limbs make apparent he's been beaten, more than once, in the past few days.

"I had hoped to make our getaway before we released the mob." She opines. "But now they may cause enough of a distraction that we can slip out with them?"

As Garrett touches the padlock to open what must be the "door to the stairs", there is an abrupt firm knock at the other side. "Two to go in!" says an authoritative man. "Bardo, open up."

There is little Ane can do with all the people milling around, and with her not being able to see who is on the other side —she does not think it is vital to be able to see, but does not know the spell well enough.
She gives Garrett a shrug, looking around at the prisoners to try gauge their intent. If they look like they will make a bid for freedom then she will suggest opening the door quickly and letting them deal with the guards on the other side, if they look like they have been too cowed —by beatings or incarceration— then she might suggest they try something else, she does not know, yet, what.

The milling prisoners scramble and shove through the doors. The two captives on the other side join the rush, essentially trampling the bewildered guard. Prisoners go quickly up the stairs (this seems to be the bottom of the dungeon) to the next landing, whence you hear shouts: "The door is locked!" "Quick get the keys!"
Feb 2, 2025 2:47 pm
Ane was still thinking about using the back door (and trying not to think about using the backside door) to get out, but hearing the prisoners trapped she feels bad to leave them. Listening she hopes one of them has the sense to snag the keys from the guards they trampled.

She lowers her torch into one of the holes in the seated bench and points to the pipe below.
"Hold this," she asks Ginseng to take the torch and then re-wraps her head scarf around her nose and leads the way back down into the filth.
Once she's made it to the pipe she yells up, "Now drop the torch to me, I'll light the way for you from down here."
She climbs down the pipe a few lengths to make room and then waits for the others to follow, the small torch held high to light their way so they can avoid the worst of the mess.

Garrett reconsiders climbing while gripping a dagger, which seems needless as no one is paying attention to your exit.

You emerge from the dark alley into the dark street, lit in a few places by still-open shop fronts or the faint light from upper windows. The night chill of the desert is settling in, and the fog is beginning to drift in from the harbor. A few people are moving with lamp- or torch-bearers through the streets, and more lights are visible moving along the wall tops. If your noses weren't overwhelmed by your own stenches, you'd probably smell good meals cooking. You can certainly hear the sounds of cooking and kitchen conversations faintly trembling through the air. The streets are sparse, the apartments are busy. It's a good time to move unobserved.

So you can see ok. The boat is not there.

Ane had planned to return the borrowed boat, but it looks like someone else has 'borrowed' it already. They did not hide it or anything, so maybe the owner took it back? She would be happier if that were the case, but she doubts it would have been missed or that the owner would have cared it was gone. The docks are filled with unwanted little craft that are too unseaworthy to go far from land, but not worth the cost of disposing of.
Ane looks around for another 'almost-derelict' they can borrow for the return trip. She does not want to be questioned by the watch, but, if they act casual, they should draw no attention.

Garrett and Ane soon enough find a boat as dilapidated but apparently leak-free as the previously borrowed one. You shove it down the sand into the water and all five of you splash in and squeeze aboard.
The boat has only one oar, so there's some clumsy paddling and passing of the oar among you as you maneuver out into the harbor. Sticking close to shore you pass unobserved around the end of the sabban wall. It takes only about twenty minutes to land this boat essentially where from you took the other one. You then take a few minutes to cleanse yourselves as you can in the shallow water of the harbor. Smelling more of salt and old fish than of sewers, you feel better to continue your evening.
Big Zhad surely is afoot right now, it's his time of the evening for business. He'll be glad to see Ginsing, sure of that. Do you make your way to Inki's where you can get news of Zhad's whereabouts?

Inside the temple is dimly lit by narrow windows near the very high ceiling. There is a worship in progress, quiet chanting echoes like distant thunder in the cavernous space. It looks like your contact may be the priest conducting the service.

Ane was distracted by the much more interesting temple of Azuth, the god of magic. It does not look like much of a place, so others might wonder what she is looking at. They can not see all the lines of magic pouring off it and splashing against the nearby buildings.
Ane's family have traditionally pushed the 'worship' of the gods of the sea and storm, so she is much more familiar with Talos, and not inclined to bother with such a service if she in not about to embark on a journey where the weather matters. She is what you would call a 'fair-weather worshiper of the gods of weather'.
She is almost tempted to tell Garrett to 'go ahead' that she will 'watch their backs', but is trying to be disciplined and not get distracted, so she sits quietly beside her companion, following the service in a bored way, but performing all the correct obeisances by habit.

The service ends. The celebrants disperse through the creaky door of the temple. The priest approaches. He's young-looking and moves awkwardly, as if he's dizzy. He smiles at you as you stand to greet him. The smile is off somehow.
"I don't recognize you," he says gently. "Are you new to worshipping Talos?"

"No, Father." Ane says. "Just usually make offerings closer to the water." She was about to mention 'or on the boat', as most vessels have shires to the various gods —sea, storm, wind, harvest, travel, whichever best applies in any given situation— and pray to them all as needed, but, she reminds herself, she does not need to be revealing personal details.
• Does it look like this priest is 'dizzy', or does he not have his land-legs from being out at sea for too long? Ane would recognise that, if that is what is going on, else she might be concerned about the item if that is affecting him.
• Ane is not an expert in these things, but: did the service look legit? Anything to suggest this is not a real priest of Talos? He was running the service, so people may have noticed.

Considering the priest more closely, he moved and spoke like a man recovering from inebriation. Or, more likely, coming down from his last sniff of lotus powder. The little bundle tucked into Ane's cleavage should ease the man's discomfort. If he has the right goods to trade …
"A parcel for a bindle," the priest says to Garrett with another off smile. Too tight, too anxious — and his eyes unsteady — he's crashing hard from the bliss of waking lotus dreams.
Feb 13, 2025 1:29 pm
"Are you alright?" Ane asks, reaching out to cup the priest's hand gently. She recognises what he is going through, she has been there herself, trying to get clean. She does not know why she even has the drugs on her, she has sworn not to partake —especially not during a job— but, maybe, felt more comfortable with the crutch available.
"Do you need a little ..." Ane says dropping her voice and ending with a little double-sideways nod-tilt with her head, a fairly universal sign for 'you know'.

"Heh … yeah. Come back to the vestry, the package is there." The priest leads you through the main room of the temple, around the altar and through a narrow doorway into a plain room warmly lit by an oil lamp. There are two comfortable-looking pink cushioned chairs in the room, and another door at the side that probably leads to the priest's living quarters. On one of the chairs there is a cloth-wrapped bundle about a cubit square and several inches thick. The priest gesture to that. "Here. And where …?" he looks eagerly to Ane.
Feb 14, 2025 7:36 pm
Ane both wants to get rid of her burden, and also does not want to part with it. Though, most of all, she does not want to be judged by her companions. So she waits for them to be distracted by collecting the package —and possibly even for them to be on their way out of —or out of— the room— before dealing with the priest.
She hesitates, longer than she is comfortable with, before fishing out the little package rolled in leaves and holding it far away from the priest, but where he can see it. She does not offer it to him, though, needing more motivation.

Garrett will act like he has not seen them and whisper to Ane"Chili peppers on the roof tracking us. Let us move nonchalantly and find a place to ditch them."
Feb 19, 2025 5:38 am
"They are watching us?!" Ane squeaks —sounding a lot like a schoolgirl who has just been told the quarterback is looking at her— and quite obviously looks up to see before realising the mistake and looking away again.
"Why would they be tracking us? Does that mean they were there for us last time?" She suspected that (or was it: 'hoped'? They came right up to her!) and has to remind herself that these people are bad news. She really does not want to get caught up in the sort of trouble the Red Wizards bring ... but think of all the magic! She thinks with a barely concealed shiver that could pass for fear.

As they walk, Ane watches the rooftops for a while until she is sure they are definitely following. Then she pulls Garrett into a small corner coffee shop, and approach a table partially under an awning.
"Let's see how good you really are." She mutters, she has spent the last minute studying Garret's legs and lower body, and forming an image of the two of them in her mind's eye. Now, instead of sitting, she directs Garrett past the table and deeper into the shop, heading for the back entrance. Just as they step out of view, she releases the image she has been holding and a copy of both of them appear to sit at the table. If she has judged it right the Chilli-peppers on the roof opposite can't see their faces or hands —the hard part to animate— and will think they have stopped for a drink.
With the Thayans hopefully watching a phantasm of a fake date, they head for the back of the shop and a way out into the other street.

Everything here is riddled with magic! Ane's rough clothes and fishy smell might show her to be a fisherman, and her cooing with delight at everything she sees reveals her to be a tourist in this Sabban, but the sheer fact that she coos in delight at a supposedly 'unseen servant' or a clever illusion, coupled with the fact that she is floating a foot above the ground, prove she is in the right place, at last.

Garrett will just act normal and play the guide roll for a tourist."Right this way my lady. You will love this."

Ahead of you the street is blocked by a shimmering transparent curtain of many colors, which ripple back and forth across the street. It appears that two neighbor wizards are playing some sort of magical game, thaumaturgic arm-wrestling if you will. A few bystanders are wagering on "Ilward" and "Lopsy".
Feb 22, 2025 12:45 pm
Fascinated, Ane drags Garrett over to watch. She has read everything she could find on the subject of magic —though so far she only found one spell to augment her innate tricks. The books made wizards sound like stuffy academicals, she had not expected this sort of sport.
"Do they do this often?" She asks one of the spectators.
Garrett can nudge Ane along, reminding her of our job. Ane might plan to stick around afterwards (though, presumably sonmething will go wrong to prevent that... it would be unheard of for a RPG delivery quest to be simply taking it there and dropping it off without incendent.:)

"It's every Tyrsday," the bystander answers. He's a swart broad man with a bald head and a wrinkled face. He wears a faded blue caftan of high-thread-count linen with tiny stitching. The stitching might be silver thread. He glances at Ane's feet. "Are you new to the sabban?"
Feb 23, 2025 5:16 am
Ane glances down at her feet as well, and descends just enough that the hem of her rode brushes the street, still a bit below her feet. She had gotten caught up in the excitement and been careless, but that seems less likely to draw negative attention here than with the rustic folk of her home sabban.
"Yes. Quite new." Ane agrees. "It is quite marvellous here."

Feb 24, 2025 3:12 am
"Un, no. Thank you." Ane says, she is not into gambling, it does not seem a good way to build up the wealth she needs for her family, not long-term.
"How would one know who was winning?" She asks, curious about the process, nonetheless. "Is it just 'pushing'?" She asks, her eyes clearly tracking the color-divide across the street.

Feb 24, 2025 2:10 pm
"Ilward is magenta, Lopsy is merrigold," answers the gambler. He gestures toward the shimmering curtain, which is mostly orange-brown. "It looks like Ilward's winning … for now. This could go all afternoon."
Feb 25, 2025 5:21 am
"Unfortunately we don't have that sort of time." Ane apologises, sounding genuinely saddened by this. "We have people to see."
Reluctantly she pulls her gaze away from the shimmering fields of magic, looking for a street-sign or anything to indicate the way to the healer where Asha is convalescing. While they have access to the magic sabban, she figures, they may as well use the opportunity to visit a sick friend. Ane has been worried and missing her friend.

Feb 26, 2025 5:41 am

Asha
The babbling of fountains and pools, and the lilting tones of pleasant music can be heard through the open doors and windows of the healing house.

Asha is dressed in a new pristine teal and bronze marbled robe and is likely the cleanest anyone has ever seen her. She looks miles healthier than the last time her companions saw her, when she was dangerously dehydrated from the loss of fluids, so weak she couldn't stand on her own, and covered in all those lost fluids mixed in a slurry with her usual dusty soot. A strength and fullness has returned to her posture and complexion, in fact it's almost shocking to see what was hidden under those layers of dirt. The red in her black hair catches the sun much more than before.
Her expression on the other hand is less appealing ... "It's about time!" she sneers, her temper obviously triggered at the moment. "They were just talking about putting me back in the ice pool if I stayed any longer!" She's too angry to admit it right now, but she was very thankful for the healing house service and despite the ice baths, there had also been some hot springs and lava stone treatments that had soothed her soul.
"Look at this!" she gestures to her new robes as she gets up to join the others. "This is going to be useless back in Erare. It won't last a week before it tears. They burned my nice sturdy vestments! For everyone else's safety, they said, ... a simple wash would have been fine," she grumbles. The new robe was a gift from the healing house after they destroyed her previous clothes, but were definitely not made with long-term use in mind.
After a big exasperated sigh, she seems to cool off a bit. Venting about her woes seems to have eased her temper. "Sorry, I'm feeling much better than when I was sick ... " She can't help but smile a little to see her companions again, particularly her friend Ane who she embraces, "How are things going for you two?"
Feb 26, 2025 5:58 am
Ane is a little shocked by the vitriol. It is not like Asha was a prisoner here. But Ane sometimes forgets how dependant the girl is on her for basic things, like she has never had to take care of herself.
"I'm sorry." Ane says completely genuinely. "We needed an excuse to get in here and this was the first time we could make it. I'm glad they are willing to let you go, we have a small job in this saban and could always use your skills."
Ane does not comment on how a nice, cold bath would be welcome, her friend does not seem to like the water as much as she does.
"It looks nice, though." Ane says about the new robe, she is still in the same one from the last time —though it has been washed... several times. "We will see what we can do if this one gets burned. Maybe just try and be more careful?" She says, knowing it will not help. "We could trade?" She says, eyeing the swirling colors a little jealously.
No one else got sick (life-long exposure to germs), and Ane wonders if she should ask the healers about medicine, for in case.

Hearing Ane's suggestions, Asha agrees, "Yeah, you're probably right. I can probably trade it for something a bit more sturdy. Let's hope I can keep it clean and undamaged until then. No more sewers!" She gives Garrett an accusatory look, although paired with a playful smile to show she's not blaming him for his idea last time. It did get them successfully in and out of the prison after all.
When Garrett brings up the chillies, Asha stops short and looks around, "What! Today? What do they want now?" A bit of anger returns to her eyes as she scans the street.
Feb 27, 2025 6:40 am
"I have no idea what they want." Ane replies wistfully about the Chilli-Peppers. "Wish I knew. They were just watching and following, they didn't approach this time. But we gave them the slip, I don't think they know we are in this sabban." This last part may be mainly wishful thinking, though, but they did lose them before entering. Any telltale magics they might perform will be much harder for Ane to spot amongst all the 'noise' of this ward.
Healing is not really Ane's thing, but it never hurts network, so she thanks the healers and makes a little small-talk on the way out.

Mar 22, 2025 10:27 pm
"I'm sure you are overreacting." Ane says. She does not like hearing Dalana being criticised and possibly blamed, "Sometimes my thoughts need to slowed a bit, so everyone else can keep up."
There is more than a little reflexive defensiveness in Ane words, possibly making them meaner than she intended. Deep down inside Ane agrees with Garrett, and wishes they all could find another place to do these meetings. When she is here she just can't help but partake, then she feels bad afterwards. But it is the place everyone chose, and she does not think the rest would want to change venues just for her.
But still, she thinks. This stuff isn't strong enough to get someone like Dalana in trouble. But, even to herself, she is not all that convinced of that conviction.
"A 'jewel khanduq'?" Ane says to Asha, changing the subject. She knows her friend is keen on jewels, but thoughts of specialist magic stores are now filling Ane's mind.

Just north of Wizard Ward is the Quill Ward where scholars, scribes, and learned sages congregate. Much of the city’s actual administrative work gets done here, and it is also the ward with the largest concentration of libraries (though most are private collections only). As it is also one of the quieter areas of the city, it is the home for many peaceful inns and rooming houses favored by travelers. The Ward also is "warded" against fires; no conflagration can spread here.Rolls

You pass through the gate from Wizard into Quill Ward without incidents. The streets are as quiet in the sabbans of scholars as they were in the wizardly wayfares; both types of people tend to be night owls, not morning larks.
The fog is entirely cleared this far uphill from the harbor, and looking back that way you can see the frothy top of the dissipating mist. Your feet (except for Ane) pad softly on the cobbled streets.
That feeling of being-followed has eased as well.
You have been walking for nearly an hour basically straight uphill and it would be a good time to sit and rest for a few minutes. Garrett spies a little coffeeshop that appears to be open for business, but only one customer is in there: an old gentleman with a very long grey goatee that reaches down to his waist. The old fellow is wearing the black robes of a legal scribe. He sits and sips his coffee, not looking at you as you pause by the open front of the shop.

Ane looks around for any sign of Chilli Peppers, she is not sure if she does or does not want to find them following again, but does feel disappointed when she does not spot them.
Earlier, Ane had excitedly tried to explain to Asha about learning spells from each other. That she had been offered a spell that sounded very much like what her friend knew. But that conversation got nowhere, Asha's way of learning magic seems very different, and Ane is interested to see if getting more 'jewels' would prove to be another way to learn more spells. She does not know how that would work, but is keen to find out.
Ane is also slightly distracted by showing off her new ability. She has been walking around as a tall man since perfecting the spell of Disguise. She still have not had to cast it under pressure, but has had fun messing with it in safe environs. Being a man has proved useful for getting people to take her seriously, though that might also be attributed to most of the people she tried it on having known her as a little kid. Ane is concentrating on making the poofy-trousered legs move and contact the ground as she 'walks', though there is still an element of 'moon-walk' about it if she gets distracted.
"What do you think of this?" She asked her companions —in a deep voice— after playing a trick on them and pretending to be a stranger asking questions for as long as she could keep it up.

He's not going to interact with you if you leave him alone, so this could be just a quick opportunity to rest your legs before continuing up toward the khanduqs. It's early and the streets are empty. Except for cats. Three of them have formed an aggressive triangle on the cobbles outside the coffeeshop, and seem to be trying to determine who should pounce first at whom.

"Only the scribes and advocates — and the pashah's vizier — review the transcripts." He holds the scroll now in a way that suggests he would tuck it into his own body if he could. Very protective of it. "Is the woman a friend of yours, you said? She needs an advocate."

Ane views this whole situation with suspicion. What are the chances, She thinks, of the only other person in the place we decide to take refreshments being involved in the case against the person we are looking for? And to have transcripts of the hearings as well‽
She stares at the man ... and the shop, and the cats, and everything, looking for signs of magic or any indication that things are being manipulated. While she did not notice anything earlier, she has not forgotten that her companions suspected they were being followed, and the Red Wizards of Thay are capable of anything.
