Garrett collects the coins with a smile, pulling mug after mug out from under the bar and onto the counter top. One by one each is filled and passed out to the bar's patrons as they line up for a taste of Baric's generosity. The crowd's spirits are certainly lifted, and the announcement of free drinks is met with prolonged cheering and hollering. Though Garrett is kept busy filling mug after mug from the taps, he chuckles a bit at Baric's question, "That, my curious friend, is a harmless question that has only a dangerous response."

"I'll say it, then," Mialee says, scoffing at Garrett's reply. She scoops one of the filled mugs into her hand, now with two drinks though her first still contains plenty. She turns to Baric and says, "The Lord of Bracklewhyte is scum. If he is not dealing with the Winter Court, he is making dissidents in the town 'disappear.'" Garrett gives Mialee a serious look, filled with warning, but Mialee continues, "No one brings it up because he has his thugs all over the town."

"That's quite enough, Mia," Garrett says, care and caution in his voice, pulling the fresh drink from in front of her and sliding it to Baric instead, "For all our sakes."

Father Morgan returns Devanis' look, but when the acolyte touches his shoulder, the priest instead embraces him. "Be careful, son. I insist that you return to tell me all about what you see below," he says, holding Devanis with all the strength in his thin arms.

After the farewells and the prayers, Devanis reenters the guildhall to find it empty, except with some noise coming from the Study. Callie's office door is closed, as usual.

Ameera finds a small book in the piles that the others have discarded from thier search. She opens the door to the mess and says to no one in particular, "I'll see if I can find some coffee or strong tea to brew." She puts the book down on the table nearest the stove, stokes the fire and finds a pot and water to put for boil. Ameera then leafs through the pages, not reading so much as looking for a pattern she might recognize. When the water boils, she searches for something strong and hot to brew, preferably a drink they favor in southern Valkaria.

Well then, I suggest that we all wish the Winter King an active Baric says then lowers his voice, leaning in and distracting court.. Once again, lowering his voice, Mia he hisses, you seem like a nice girl. Don't get yourself killed. Returning to a normal volume, he sips his tankard and continues, I've seen Lords kill kin for less. They are a fickle and entitled lot.

Thank you, Garrett.
Baric nods his thanks at the Barkeep, If I'm going to be worth anything in the morning, I should get some sleep.

Which room is mine?

"You're welcome," Garrett says, almost reluctantly, "You can sleep in the one up those stairs, second on the right."

Mialee, however, chuckles at Baric's words, "I've said worse about more dangerous men and I still breathe today." She then busies herself with her drink, letting Baric depart.

Ameera is quickly able to find a drink to her liking as the stores seem to have been recently restocked. Unfortunately for her, the closest thing to a Valkarian tea seems to be the Sevarran brew, which is almost identical, if a bit unpatriotic. There are a couple kinds available, however.

Ameera finds section of the book that seems to interest her, marks it and adds a measure of the aromatic herb and tea mixture to the small pot of water on the stove. The smell from Auwra's warmer climates fills the room. Ameera smiles because of the familiar, exhilarating aroma, and stows a small container of the mix in her purse. Dipping a mug of the hot brew, she returns to the book but soon realizes that she cannot really glean the information she had hoped for.

After closing the book, Ameera takes out a deck of cards to play a challenging solitaire game of Keeper. Simply looking at the detailed drawings of each of the domains suits always helps her mood. She masterfully shuffles the cards and deals the standard four keeps, to begin the process of merging them down to three, two and hopefully one pile. This is nearly impossible with a normal deck of 54, let alone her deck of 72 cards (including the Death and Trickery domains), so she finds it takes her mind off of the days events and allows her to relax and consider sleep.

After 3 hours of silent reading, Pyrrah finally closes the book and sighs, rubbing at her eyes as she tries to lessen her exhaustion. It'd been a long day. No doubt tomorrow would be even longer. She picks up the book and stows it in her bag; after all, she might look at it before they left. It might come in useful later anyway. Plus, it had been buried, and Callie probably didn't even realize it was there. She puts away the books she'd toppled and cleans up before leaving. As she approaches the cots, she thinks that she can vaguely smell a tea from her homeland, but her exhaustion makes her dismissive. She flops down, cradling her bag and using her arm as a pillow before slowly drifting off to sleep.

Waiting for three more to decide to sleep. Feel free to narrate things you do before sleeping, unless you think anything would require a roll or involves another player character. If there are any actions that I have missed please let me know.

Thwarted in her third game, this time by having a War King, Mummer, and a Machine with no Keep to rest them on, Ameera lays her head on her crossed arms at the table and sleeps. The Dwarven figures depicted on the cards of war silently mock her in sleep.

Erran spends several hours studying The Great Retreat dutifully, dog earring several pages he finds particularly useful. He eventually finds the will to tear himself away from the book, closing it and taking it with him to the sleeping area.

He takes the time to get down to his simple clothing, and take off his mail armor, and places all the pieces within the footlocker at the end of a unoccupied bed stationed in the corner of the room, staging his crossbow and Messer shortsword on top of the chest in hopes that it shall create a clamor should anyone attempt to fiddle with his belongings in his sleep. Keeping his greatsword within reach, Erran leans it up against the wall near him, puts his hands behind his head as he attempts to quell the anxiety and excitement of what tomorrow has in store for him.

Keep calm, that's how you stay alive, the words of his father swimming in his mind as he closes his eyes and falls into a slumber.

The following morning arrives...

The air is much warmer than when you went to sleep last night. Outside it is bright and sunny (though there is still a cloud of smoke hanging in the air above), and Grey Mountain glistens in the light. Within the guildhall, it is almost too warm if one is dressed for Winter. A few people are found asleep in nearby cots when the party awakens one by one (first with Erran breaking from his Elven trance). One is that same dwarf, Duggin, that was sleeping there yesterday, spread out across one of the cots and snoring loudly. The second is a woman in her 20s with short dark hair, covered with a green, woolen blanket. A heavy, filled traveling pack is laid next to her, and a black, flanged mace rests against it.

Callie remains still hard at work in her office, uncertain as to whether she slept or not. The smell of coffee wafts in from the kitchens. Otherwise, much of the guildhall is unchanged.

Erran spends 10 minutes after he wakes doing a series of stretches, before following his nose to procure a cup of coffee to stimulate his senses.

Erran returns back to his cot to don his armor and weaponry, doing his best not to disturb the sleeping guild mates. After securing his sword around his shoulders, he takes his beverage with him to locate Callie, stopping for a moment at the ledger to see if he can catch the name of the women currently sleeping in the barracks.

Proceeding towards Callie's office, he raps his knuckles a few times on the door frame before entering, "Good morning, my lady. I had a question for you. I found a rather interesting tome in the study last night, The Great Retreat, and I was wondering if it be permissible for me to take it with me on our first excursion below? I will be sure to preserve it's condition."

Ameera is wakened when someone enters the mess to make coffee. She rubs the sleep from her eyes, checks that knife, whip and purse are undisturbed. She grabs a mug of coffee, walks into the study to return her book to the shelves.
Ameera goes out of the cages door to stand in the hazy sunshine. The last daylight we'll see for a while I guess. she closes her eyes, leans up against the building near the door in the sun, and drinks her coffee. She listens for any activity in the cages.

Pyrrah rolls over and blinks her eyes against the soft morning light. She quickly sits up, grabs her pack, and follows her nose towards the kitchen; the strong aroma of coffee pierces the otherwise bland scents of the guild house. She carefully sets down her bag by the edge of the stove and looks at her options. The overwhelming smell of coffee makes her stomach churn violently, reminding her that she had neglected to eat the entire time that she'd been here. She immediately begins heating water for tea, beginning to remember the half-forgotten aroma of a Sevarran blend from the night before. She brews a cup and digs around for something bland to settle her stomach. Cradling her drink and donning her pack, she heads outside back towards the Rift. Moving carefully, she approaches once more, although not as close as the previous night. She stands staring down into the abyss while taking long draws from her tea, quietly thinking about what was yet to come, what she'd discovered and experienced thus far, and calculating what she should do next.

As Erran enters into Callie's office, the halfling is hard at work behind her desk. She is just now rolling up a scroll and setting it on the edge of her desk before setting to writing another one. She looks up when the Elf enters, and smiles, "Good morning, Erran."

She ponders his question a moment, tapping the end of her quill into the inkpot, and then she says, "If you think it will help, then yes; it is permissible." She offers a warm smile once more, "Are you departing soon?"

-----

Ameera finds that none of her equipment has been bothered, and luckily more coffee remains for her to indulge in. Though the air is cold, the sunshine is warm as she exits the building. Icicles that had formed in the night drip from the edges of rooftops. The side of the Guildhall contains a small yard ringed with a knee-high, wooden picket fence. Though now covered in a layer of snow, small signs that stick up out of the ground labeled "tomato" and "peas" give evidence to a failed garden.

A few members of Bracklewhyte's populace can be seen walking down the street, within sight of the guildhall's side door.

-----

Outside of the guildhall's front door, Pyrrah steps out toward the rift in the center of town. As she nears the edge, a gust of wind hits her back, just firmly enough to make one pause at the edge of such an abyss. The wind whistles and moans as it blows across the sharp edges and cracks that the rift had formed in the ground. The lift creaks and whines as the platform sways uncertainly back and forth.

The darkness seen within it betrays no secrets.

Erran returns the welcoming smile and replies, "You have my thanks, miss. Knowledge can be just as potent as any blade, often more so," he pauses to take a sip of his coffee, staring into the dark liquid for a moment before reestablishing eye contact.

"Yes, I have yet to speak with my guildmates this morning, but I'm sure they are just as eager to shove off as I. You spoke of sending us off with some extra climbing gear last night, I could find those in the cages, correct?"
Oct 29, 2016 6:33 am
"Yes! Callie says excitedly, "Ameera was so helpful and brought them down for me. She has the key."
Oct 29, 2016 6:53 am
Erran's eyebrows raise slightly, "Why yes, that is very kind of her. I shall go find her, best to get familiar with the equipment now rather than later," he says with a small chuckle.

"You have treated us well, even considering our short time here. I, as I'm sure my companions do as well, appreciate it." Giving a slight bow before departing from the office, Erran makes his way into the cages, looking for a sign of Ameera or the climbing harnesses.
