Chapter 2.1b: Search Party (Hochoch)

- " Doing what's right isn't just about acting when it's convenient, my friend. We have a responsibility to burn the undead. Regarding the ogre, it's also about preventing future harm. Imagine if the same dark force that created those undead could reanimate the ogre under the cover of night. Leaving corpses behind that could be used for foul purposes is a risk we shouldn't take. We can certainly rest more first if you insist; time isn't our immediate enemy. However, I believe it's our duty to ensure we don't leave behind potential threats for the innocent villagers and farmers nearby.

What are you thoughts Rosemary? "

"Well...," Rosemary thinks out loud. "If it would take too much time to gather wood and build a fire, but we still want to make sure this guy doesn't get up again..." She snaps her fingers then points back and forth between Manthis and Arya. "UNDEAD! They were all intact!" She turns to Arya. "This may sound a little grim, but what if we just chopped him at the elbows, knees, and neck? Then we just put him in a hole and cover with large stones?"

KidEnnui says:
What time of day is it?
OOC:
It is early morning; the party had packed up and was just about to start out from their campsite when they heard Karsh.
WanderOne says:
Weren't we resting till the morning and then we were going to return for the gear but the Ogrillion attacked before we finished rest. Question is it best to get more rest or to head out to get the gear? I have no concept with time it is or how much rest we got or need?
OOC:
No, everyone got a short and a long rest earlier. You could take another short rest now.

Not that anyone was asking, but here's a reminder in case it comes up in the future: In 5e, PCs can only gain the benefit of a long rest once per day. Right now that means your long rest won't be available again for another day.

"The unknown plays a big part in this. I believe Rosemary's solution would be a nice compromise. I by no means speak for the group though. All I'll say is if we keep walking in circles, we are never going to get anywhere."
Having said his piece, Jonel squats, waiting patiently.

A long sigh escaped Arya. "If we're unwilling to dedicate the time for a proper disposal for now, then so be it. While I understand the practicality of corpse mutilation, it goes against my principles, and I will not be involved.

We can go back to our previous camp site to get back our things and rest, we can think about it further. "

Rosemary begins to dismember the body. At first she uses her hatchet, but then she uses the battleaxe as it has more heft for cleaving. Jonel, without any kind of cutting implement, begins to gather the rocks to make a cairn to pile over the remains (although he could ask to use a handaxe to assist with the gory work). Arya sniffs in revulsion and hurries to follow Manthis, who has already strode off into the Dim toward their original campground that they'd fled last night.

Rosemary is skilled, and makes short work of this task. Ten minutes is enough to butcher the body, and working together, she and Jonel manage to cover it with stones in another twenty. They're confident that the cairn will keep out anything smaller than a bear from exhuming the body parts. At the end of this, Rosemary and Jonel are tired and filthy with blood and dirt.

Soon, approaching the campground in the morning light, Manthis slows with a bit of caution, looking for any of the animated dead that they'd left here. This allows Arya to catch up to him. Seeing no movement, they proceed cautiously into the little hollow by the cliff. Their fire has burned down to ashes and is cold. Their abandoned gear appears undisturbed (except for their packs - squirrels scramble away as they approach and chitter angrily at them from the safety of nearby trees), and the remains of five dead adventurers lay scattered around the site.

He is definitely taxed, but the task was necessary. "Thankful that is behind us. Do you have any of that lavender left?" addressing Rosemary.

Without hesitation, Arya donned her armor. The familiar weight a reassurance against further surprises. A fleeting thought crossed her mind: Could one even sleep in this? It sounds terribly uncomfortable. "I'm ready," she announced to Mantis, a note of resolve in her voice.

Her gaze lingered on the mangled remains of the undead; a deep urge to purify them still tugged at her. However, sensing her companions' reluctance to spend time burning bodies, she decided to to allowing them to guide their next course of action.

https://gamersplane.com/characters/avatars/31873.jpg?1739084733 On watching Manthis doesn't aid Arya in donning her heavy armor. He doubts that she would even appreciate the help.

He instead is watching about for annoying trouble. Seems that this area is teaming with difficulties. Fine place not to be a lone traveler.

He held scant concern about the undead bodies. He isn't one haul around a lot of extra stuff and by looks their gear wasn't keen. He has zero concern about dealing with the dead bodies and doesn't even try to slide them away in the brush and stuff. He leaves them as reminder to the next people that camp there. Returning back to the others was more in his line of thoughts.

Rosemary wipes the sweat from her forehead and wipes off any blood after placing the last stone. She tosses a small pouch to Jonel. "There's more in there if you need it. Come on." She jogs off towards their old campsite. After reaching Arya and Manthis, she hunches over and takes a breath."Anyone... seen my paddle?"
Mar 26, 2025 4:31 pm
Returning to the original camp site, Rosemary finds her paddle, apparently untouched from where she dropped it. But critters have weaseled open her pack and remains of her pastries are scattered among the dead bodies and pieces of equipment the dead adventurers were carrying.
OOC:
You can, of course, keep Karsh's javelin and/or battleaxe for use or sale, too.

OOC:
If all others decline the axe, I could probably hock it in town.
Jonel applies the lavender liberally before passing the pouch back. "I'll lug the ax back to town. No doubt some logger could make use of it. And I haven't worked in a while."
Mar 26, 2025 6:45 pm
Rosemary sighs and cleans off her paddle. She stows it and gathers what's left of her goods. She then returns to her comrades. "Arya, do you mind if we talk on our way?"
Mar 26, 2025 7:39 pm
OOC:
Manthis picked up Rosemary stuff before he left the site to meet back up with them. That was the point to go to the camp site beside Arya stuff which Arya retrieved.

Big strong Manthis was carrying the extra Javelin & battle axe earlier. He picked them up so as not to let them waste away while the other took care of the body and such. He picked them up before he left for the camp site. Note: He is just carrying them. Not owning them.

WanderOne says:

OOC:
I'm going to say that Manthis suggested that he was going to carry them (since that was what @WanderOne posted: just him offering to carry the weapons), but since Rosemary actually was going to use it, she kept the axe for the obvious purpose of chopping up the body. That way the people who needed it used it, and it doesn't contradict what I already narrated.

It takes 10 minutes to return to the original campsite, then Arya takes 10 minutes to don her armor. If you want to say that Manthis used that time to gather up all of Rosemary's equipment, that's fine. Manthis and Arya could then be ready to return with the gear and arrive just as Rosemary and Jonel have finished their job.

I will also point out that Manthis has assumed that the dead adventurers' equipment wasn't worth anything - he isn't one to haul around extra stuff - but others could check if they wanted to verify that, or discover any other information about who the dead people were when alive. As Dungeon Busters, they've been sent on a fact-finding mission. At the same time, it would also make sense to leave without curiosity, avarice, or ambition, shaken by the back-to-back ordeals. Either is fine.
