Chapter 1: The Arrival

Rone has no idea what this creature might be. It doesn't fall for his feint, but it doesn't matter much, as he thrusts out with his rapier and impales the thing through the throat, a critical hit! It gurgles and dies on the end of his sword, and with that, the short skirmish comes to an end.

Eugene's needles return to him and transform back into a chunk of metal in his hands. Though no longer his car keys. He slumps to the ground, and closes his spellbook. "Now things are attacking us!" Eugene said in exasperation. He was glad his breathing was back to normal at least, though he continued to do his breathing exercises to make sure it stayed that way.

Rone rubbed the blood on the corpse of the creature and then flipped it over to check if they were carrying something. He then turned to others and said, "Well and I am guessing you three can cast magic. Was it magic? I don't think I can do that."

Looking at the horizon again, he said, "I guess we should start moving and get away from this place. Let's go to that distant settlement and ask around. We can't get anything in the desert."

Michel does his best to come to grips with the new size of his cat. Other than her size, she looks and acts completely normal. She definitely doesn't seem to mind the desert sun at all.

"Did they though?" he asks Eugene. "I mean, they didn't look friendly, but I do think we attacked them first."

He agrees with Rone that seeking out the city would be a great idea, especially since they are in a desert without food or water.
He does suggest to maybe look around the area where they arrived first. Maybe they missed something.
"Did anybody see where those dog things came from anyway?"

Meanwhile, Gloria has deemed the dead dogs as unworthy of becoming food, but fun enough to play with for a bit.

You find footprints near the obelisk indicating that the dog creatures snuck up on you while you were distracted coming to terms with your new bodies and surroundings. Without much else keeping you here, you head for the town. It doesn't take too long to cross the half-mile down the rise to the settlement's partially completed wall.

A few people in colorful, mismatched uniforms mill about at the edge of town, ostensibly keeping watch but in reality mostly just chatting to one another. The most striking thing about these people, though, is their height, or lack thereof! They stand just over 3 feet in height, shorter than even Eugene. Their hair is vibrantly colored, one orange, one green, and one blue. Their eyes and mouths are overly large, giving them the appearance of cartoon characters! They look up at you as you approach.

"Hello! Welcome to Finderplain!" one of them declares. "You look like you've had a rough go of things, eh? Need any help?"

Another one's eyes widen when she sees Gloria. "Ooh! Big kitty! Can I pet her? Can I? Can I?"
Feb 26, 2025 3:36 pm
Rone approached the one who talked and said, "Greetings, we are travelers here. Do you have any place to stay, and might I ask about that archway and obelisk in the distance?" He was quite surprised looking at the short people here, but it was going to be rather rude to ask them about what they actually are.

Michel was mostly amazed how incredibly not out of breath he was after the walk through the desert across the loose sand.

'The town of the punk hobbits... weird.' he thinks to himself as he sees the inhabitants. "Well, you can certainly try." he tells the one that asked about Gloria. 'Try to be nice' he thinks hard at the now giant cat. 'Whenever am I not' he gets as a surprising sarcastic reply. 'Okay, that's new', he thinks.

Gloria lets the kid (or whatever, they sure sounded childish) pet her a few times and the jumps up and runs away like mad for about 20 meters, comes to a very abrupt halt, and turns around again, bushy tail playfully waving over her head.
"Yeah, she loves it when people chase after her. She's been doing that since she was this big..." Michel explains, holding his hands about fifteen centimeters apart.
OOC:
Michel has turned his phone and tablet completely off after the fight to save the battery.
Also, is this enough to make a Make An Impression roll?

Yes, you may roll to Make an Impression.

OOC:
Let's do that then...

Almost as quickly as it started, the fight was over. Mathias stands firm, looking at his hands in amazement, then at the others. "Did you see that? We just...I don't know...it looked like magic, but it felt like I was pulling power from the ground itself!" He shakes his head in disbelief, but senses that connection to the elements still within his grasp, and it follows him as they walk toward the settlement. He picks mentally at the connection, toying with it, and finding if feels like putting on a familiar pair of jeans. He chuckles to himself as if remembering what he had for breakfast and opens that connection, drawing power from the earth again and covering his physique with a layer of stone armor.
OOC:
Using Armor in Earth, which he will from now on typically keep active at all times. He just has to refresh it every 10 minutes to keep it active.
Arriving in the town, he smiles nervously at the citizenry - all so different, yet weren't he and his companions as well?

"Thank you for the warm welcome," he says, "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your home. Finderplaine, you said?" He runs his hands through his hair - a habit he'd had since a kid growing up in Ohio - "This may seem an odd question, but where exactly is here?"
Feb 28, 2025 12:09 am
Eugene still held his malfitting clothes in place as he tagged onto Mathias' question, "Yes, where and when is here, what is the current date?" he thought maybe he could determine how deep this hallucination went, or were these characters some form of AI. He had just read about Google's Quantum chip possibly proving the existence of parallel universes. Maybe they turned it on again and the whole world had been affected? He was no quantum scientist, but that sounded so far fetched. It almost had to be a hallucination.

As the short woman happily chases Gloria around, the man who first spoke scratches his head at Rone's question. "Hmm? Obelisk? Gateway? I'm not sure what you're talking about, friend! But we've got a few inns in town that cater to tall folk like yourselves. I'd be happy to direct you to the nearest one."

He then turns to Mathias and Eugene. "Yep, this is Finderplain! This here's a waypoint for travelers between Nex, Katapesh, and the western wilds. The current date is the 17th of Calistril, 4725 Absalom Reckoning."
Feb 28, 2025 12:56 pm
Rone gave a confused look at the mention of Nex, Katapesh, and Absalom. These names were so alien to him. He could swear that there was no such place back where he lived. He looked towards the other newcomers who arrived with him, trying to gauge their minds. Turning back to the man, he said, "I would love to have some place to eat and rest. Why don't you take me there? It would be a great help, sir."

Mathias frowns at the strange names of places, and the strange date. He tries to keep his mouth shut as his mind tries to take everything they've gathered together to form a picture of exactly what is going on. "Thank you," he says distantly. When Rone mentions food and rest, it catches his attention. "That would be great," he agrees, "I feel like my brain is going to implode. I need to sit down and think."
Mar 2, 2025 10:40 pm
Eugene nodded, "Yes, food, drink, is there by chance a clothes pantry, mine are ill fitting now" the names of places spin around in his mind. If this is a hallucination he is unsure where he has heard any of those places, so he is making them up and they would have no meaning to cling on to. Best to go along with it for the moment, less anxiety at least.

The lead guard leads you into the town. The strange settlement seems to be an eclectic mishmash of structures arrayed with the best of intentions along unregulated thoroughfares. The streets average about 20 feet in width, with narrow 5-foot alleys splitting off from major streets, and those streets sometimes constricting to 10 feet wide, widening into impromptu plazas as much as 50 feet across or turning abruptly to navigate the haphazard structures.

This area appears to be a large market, and you spot numerous residents, most of them smallfolk like the guards, hawking strange wares and doing business. The guard stops to haggle with one merchant with a clothing stall. Copper coins are exchanged, and the guard offers you some new homespun clothes that will fit your forms better than your current apparel. Soon thereafter, you finds yourselves in a cozy tavern with accommodations scaled to human size.

"You can change your clothes in the privy here," the guard says. "I'll arrange for some food and drink for you. Stay here and take some rest. I'll be back soon." He then heads out into the town, leaving you to your own devices.

Michel is quiet, and mostly just takes in the sights and smells of the city. Gloria is around somewhere, he senses; either scouting around on her own or sunbathing on a rooftop, he cannot tell.

He thanks the guard graciously for the food and clothes. He's not sure how much he needs the clothes though. while he has changed significantly in appearance, he has remained more or less the same size. While the t-shirt has become a bit snug, his pants and coat actually fit better than they used to. He thinks absent-mindedly that you can probably put a Rune on his coat, and then finds himself wondering where that thought came from, and what a Rune even is.

"So, does anybody think that the free food and clothes are kind of weird, even by today's standards?"
Mar 4, 2025 2:07 am
Eugene takes the offered provisions and changes in the privy, he comes back out wearing brown leather boots, a pair of blue trousers, and a long olive colored shirt with a brown belt worn around his belly. "It looks like I've just come from the renaissance faire" he mutters as he rejoins the others. "How's the food then?" he asked, assuming the others had tried it.
Mar 4, 2025 3:20 am
"I'm not going to lie, my first instinct with the hospitality is to ask 'what do they want from us?' But then, this is not home for me, and maybe the world is just different here. I would say better if that were the case, if not for the dog-creatures that greeted us first."
Mar 4, 2025 8:38 am
Rone accepted the clothing and changed in the privy. He chose a dark leather coat, inner shirt, and belted trouser as his attire, with a blue ribbon tying his hair in an elegant ponytail. When he returned, he heard everyone's opinion and said, "I know it sounds very sketchy and overly optimistic, but I am grateful for all these. If need be, we must be careful with the food we eat then. Also, I was meaning to ask about probable jobs. I mean, I don't have any money, but the coins here seem quite different, and it would be better if we started gathering some coins to pay for our stay. Should we ask them if any jobs are available?"
