Clancy keeps his head down among the pews as the creature's weapon discharges.
Rolls
Cover (+2) - (1d6+2)
(6) + 2 = 8

Alex is stunned at the sight momentarily, and wavers for a second or two before acting - unsure whether to drop into cover or shoot, he does neither for a few seconds, stunned into inaction. Eventually, he does try to drop behind a pew, and get into a better shooting position where he might not be a target.
OOC:
My bad for not posting, so not going to take advantage of a lower Tn for the Athletics test. If I pass, I'll also try a shot.Rolls

Alex pauses a heartbeat too long. Enveloped in the beam of sickly light, he is at once immobilised. He stands stiffly, enveloped in a green glowing film, too rigid even to topple against a pew.
The monster utters another alien noise of distress. It staggers further along the aisle, leaving a trail of blue-green ichor. Its beam weapon trembles in its loosening grip but it seems to be preparing to launch a second filthy ray.
So basically new round. Trail doesn’t seem to ‘do’ shock mechanically, so we’ll keep on fighting and do a stability test at the end. (Survival instinct has kicked in and you’ll deal with the trauma later.)
Same options as before — the monster is leaking blood and only needs another shot to go down… Alex is immobilised.

Can I talk at all, or not?OOC:
Yes. In a halting, confused way— like Harrington, when you talked to him…

The creature’s device smashes as Emma’s bullet passes through it, causing it to detonate in a pulse of bright heat. The creature is incinerated, filling the old building with an alien stench!
Now the horror of the situation catches up with the investigators…
Make a tn4 stability test, or lose 6 stability points (violence, horror, peril), 7 (temp paralysis) if you are Alex.

investing 2 Stability sounds like a good ideaShe looks in shock at the thing dissolving, realizing her gun hand is shaking visibly...
Then she turns and looks at the terrible consequences on Alex.
"Oh my God! Alex! You're hit!" she rushes to his side, checking for wounds.

Clancy lifts his head up just in time to see the alien's gun detonate and for his own to get disintegrated. What a terrible day to have eyes!
OOC:
I only have 2 stability left so I guess I'll settle for paying just 1...Rolls

OOC:
It’s ok to go to low negatives with stability. We want at least one or two investigators to be shaken by the end of the adventure so it’s genre appropriate :)
If anybody can give Alex medical assistance (first aid tn4) he’ll be able to move about stiffly, using his investigative skills but not really shooting, jumping, etc. The weapon used on him is obviously not as powerful as that used against Harrington.
I’m going to treat the church as a whole ‘scene’ for the purposes of the next turn.
Yet this revelation, which would sent the investigators reeling a day or so earlier, barely registers after the horror of their battle.
There are two further avenues of terror to explore. The bell tower above, from which the humming noise still emits. And the crypt, reachable by a chill stairway at the rear of the church.
OOC:
There are no clues here, only choices:
1. Climb the bell tower, which requires a tn4 athletics or stealth test, as the wooden steps are rotten. Alex, even if he has been helped with first aid, won’t be able to manage the climb.
2. Descend to the crypt. Easy enough, requiring only some unpleasant brushes with cobwebs and the icy cold of the crypt itself.
3 Finish up the investigation and go home. The mystery as to what was going on has not really been solved, but a dangerous vampiric alien has been destroyed.
4. Do something else.

I didn’t really offer any suggestions as to how Alex might be ‘de-immobilised’ so how about this…
May 14, 2025 9:47 pm
Emma turns toward Alex, concerned, only to sigh in relief when she sees Melody's quick thinking and deft hands at work. Emma looks once more upwards and says, "I do believe we must ascend... I'll go. Anyone else?" She reloads her revolver and heads toward the tower.
OOC:
Assuming no one stops her, I'll spend and roll...Rolls

Emma scales the creaking boards to the bell tower. Those behind her cannot follow too closely, lest the staircase collapse under the combined weight. So she is the first to reach the deck where the church’s bronze bells once pealed. To the east and south stretch the city’s nocturnal streets. To the north, she glimpses the old Miskatonic, reflecting Arkham’s lights.
But there is something else there. Something impossible…
Above, a dozen yards above her head, an object hovers weightlessly. Leaden grey and and shaped like a crooked bomb or torpedo, it turns slowly in the air high above the Main Street corner. Emma guesses that it is a starship, a vehicle that navigates the endless void of space. Docked weightlessly with the church’s steeple acting as a kind of anchor. But whereas the heaven ships she had seen in comics are sleek and modern, the object she now glimpses is ugly and misshapen. The only feature that breaks its lumpen form is a crude, heavy-looking porthole from which another of the vampire creatures peers through sunken eyes. It watches for a split second…
The ship’s engines detonate, casting it rapidly into the darkness of the sky. Deafened by their din and fearful that the steeple will collapse at it shakes from their impact, Emma watches as the crooked object rises and is quickly hidden in cloud.
…..
"We’ll done, you’ve done very well. Another brandy? I recommend it for settling the nerves…"
King looks at the four adventurers with concern. He is disappointed that Tillinghast left the group so quickly, but seems surprised and pleased that those remaining handled the perils successfully.
"So ghouls… but then an alien visitor of some sort. What do you think happened? I mean, what was the connection? And why could Harrington see the object, presumably, before he promised to make a photograph?"

Clancy shrugs. "It would be strange if it were more than coincidence. What would an alien visitor have in common with an undead ghoul? I don't think this is the kind of mystery we will be able to solve, to be honest. I'm just happy we have any sort of answer at all. Any word on Harrington's condition? He is the only one who will be able to answer how and what he saw."
