The Watchman Watches in Vain

OOC:

Before the game starts it would be handy to look over this clickable location map of Arkham’s Merchant District, which lies right at the west end of the city. On the south side of the Miskatonic River.

A couple of scenes will be in this area and the layout will be of some significance.

King Mansion, French Hill, Arkham

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bf/Samuel_Darling_House_WAHD_-_Providence_Rhode_Island.jpg

Hartley King, scion of the once grand Kingewyke family, hobbles into his grand drawing room on a walking stick. He is immaculately dressed in an old fashioned, almost Victorian-style suit. Although only his early 50s, he has the showy-white hair and lined face of an elder.

He thanks his visitors --a motely crew drawn from every stratum of Arkham society-- for attending. They are seated and standing all around the drawing room. Some busy themselves with the canapes and drinks served by King's housekeeper.

All of those present have been invited to the meeting by a hand-written note. Penned in shaky copperplate, the letters requested them to assist Arkham in a time of need. Depending on the recipient, the letter appealed to different motivations: duty, adventure, curiosity or the offer of a decent cash payment.

Some of the guests know that King once led a band of investigators who claimed to defend the old city from occult threats. Whatever the truth of their claims that Arkham was a hotbed of supernatural activity, most of King's society came to sticky ends--madness, illness and death.

King delivers a brief speech. He explains that although he no longer dares to confront Arkham's supernatural enemies face-to-face himself, he is conscious of his duty to keep up the fight. He has gathered those present as they have come to his notice as exceptional Arkhamites. Well able to take on the task that he and old comrades once attempted. He explains that (as his letter has already indicated), he wishes them to carry out an important investigation, exposing a threat that has been brought to his attention by a respectable source.

As they listen, the guests cannot help but look around at the others King has invited.

One of the guests is George Tillinghast, a middle-aged antiquarian who owns a successful antique shop in Arkham's bustling Main Street. He is rather casually dressed in a checked suit with a too-bright yellow pocket square. His raincoat and trilby have been taken by King's butler. Although George is something of a glutton, he barely touches the plate of canapes before him. Instead, he puffs on his large pipe.

Tillinghast came to King's attention after he carried out an evaluation of an old cabinet in King's office. Tillinghast demonstrated exceptionally strong historical and artistic knowledge, identifying the cabinet's maker and even a secret compartment that had been hidden for over a century. King's letter appealed skilfully to the antiquarian's curiosity and interest in business. Should he help with this investigation, the letter promised, King would consult (and pay) him regularly as his exclusive agent in matters of antiques.

I'm feeling my excitement going off the boil a little, so I'd like to get started and at least get our characters introduced.. ...could you all write a brief passage for your character using the same pattern as the blue passage above--character description, how you came to King's attention as a plausible investigator, what motivations King's letter (accurately) appealed to. Assume that your character is interested and that King has correctly identified your motivations. Please keep it fairly brief so the reading load is not too great after my long opening.

Tillinghast will drop out, btw, he's just here to model your first post :)

Melody is in her mid-thirties, wealthy and bored - and all three things are fairly obvious to an observer. Her chestnut-brown wavy hair is cut chin-length framing her high-cheekboned features and strong jawline. Today she is wearing leather riding boots and kaki jodhpurs, a tailored herringbone tweed jacket and a teal paisley-patterned neckscarf. She left her parchment-coloured leather driving gloves in the glove compartment of the Bugatti outside. An attire combination she finds practical, if slightly unorthodox. Like many aspects of her life, what she wears is something to experiment with, without much caring for the judgement of others.

The note from Mr. King had been a breath of fresh air in her dull morning post. Finally, something different from charity gala invitations and mundane High Tea parties... She was not acquainted with the Kingewyke family, a fact in itself unusual for someone in her societal position. And the man said to have noticed her for her quick wits and problem-solving when she had single-handedly helped an elderly man harrassed by several unsavoury characters in a back alley near River Town. Of course, she had no memory whatsoever of the incident, but still: reading those words had somewhat flattered her. Something in the tone of the phrasing was not the usual sycophantic praise (usually concealing a subsequent request for a favor, or for funds). But it was more the intriguing mention of Mr. King's adventurous career defending Arkham like an old-fashioned musketeer straight out of a penny dreadful story, that had piqued her interest. If nothing else, the proposed encounter promised some interesting anecdotes, and a chance to learn more about this once prestigious family of Arkhamites.

And now that she's here, this decadent French Hill residence full of old trinkets, combined with their fascinating host's demeanour and his mention of a mysterious threat, are definitely keeping her interest piqued. The variety of walks of life the other guests seem to belong to, is also rather surprising. This has all the traits of a welcome diversion from her usual engagements, for sure!

Alex Cowley is an intense young man, his hair frequently unkempt and straggly, his thin frame exaggerated in his old, frayed suit, but it's his eyes that give him the somewhat off-putting look. He gets off the bus and walks the dozen blocks or so to King's house, cursing the old man for not living closer, within walking distance, so that he'd have the bus fare still in his pocket rather than several balls of lint and the half-chewed rolled up bus ticket. Arriving at the house, he stands for a moment outside and looks up at the windows. Hope he has food at least, he thinks to himself, as his stomach rumbles at the very mention of the word.

He enters the house, his eyes slowly adjusting to the low lighting of the study after the bright sunshine outside, and spies the food laid out on the sidetable. He quickly assembles a plate, placing a couple of extra sandwiches and fancies in his pockets for later, then sits and eyes the others as they watch him. He tries his smile, not often revealed in public - nor in private, come to that - and feels a little self-conscious. Should have practised it in the mirror at home he thinks. Might be a bit out of practice. Looking at the others, his penetrating gaze settles on a wealthy-looking woman. He's sure he's seen her somewhere before. It takes a few minutes, but then he remembers: The faker, Mrs Wilmington, a year or so before. This woman had attended the seance there, briefly, before Alex had pulled on one of the hidden wires and revealed the travesty she was pulling on her paying guests. He nods at the woman, wondering whether she had recognised him, or whether she assumed he was some lunatic.
Apr 19, 2025 10:39 am
Melody nods back at the intense-looking fellow, who is strangely familiar, trying to recall where they might have met. Then it comes to mind!
"Oh, I remember you... Crawley? Carlisle? You are the seance debunker, are you not? Melody Fitzjohn-Barnes, I believe I saw you in action, once... quite theatrical!"

Wouldn't mind a quiet conversation with this man about THAT last seance I attended... she thinks.

Clancy Bleasdale looks nothing like people expect a journalist to look. He's tall, broad-shouldered, and heavily muscled. He has the chiseled features of a Soviet propaganda poster. He was in fact an athlete until a few years ago. He had gone to Miskatonic U on a football scholarship and played for the full four years he attended school. But he wasn't the dim-witted jock most people expected. He was interested in political science, economics, history, the occult, and journalism. This last one became his major and he was hired by the Arkham Advertiser right after graduating instead of pursuing a professional football career. He started out as a lowly man-on-the-street reporter, interviewing people and tracking down details for other writers at the paper. But in a couple of years he rose to investigative journalist, which was where he really wanted to be. He got to chase down his own stories and write them up in his own column, "Clancy's Cases." He exposed the usual vices of any city's underbelly: corruption, illegal activities, and coverups. He also occasionally ran into unexplained stories, cases that defied logic or explanation. Things to do with the occult and supernatural.

It was from these columns that Clancy Bleasdale came to the attention of Hartley King. Clancy had had a letter waiting for him on his office desk one morning from Mr. King. The letter praised Clancy for his incorruptibility, determination, and unwavering curiosity. It was for these traits, and Clancy's access as a journalist, that he had invited Clancy to his home to discuss vague but tantalizing hints at hidden threats to Arkham. And to protect this city from those threats. How could Clancy decline?

Emma Warren sat tucked into the corner of a long sofa, almost as if trying to burrow. She kept her legs crossed and her hands folded in her lap. She was a small woman, with soft pale skin and chestnut hair in a short bob with well-kept finger curls. She wore round, gold wire-frame glasses and minimal makeup, except for a dark shade of red for her small pursed lips. She wore a brown and tan plaid wool blazer with matching knee length skirt and a cream blouse, with plain taupe stockings and chestnut brown leather shoes with a low, thick heel. Beside her was a simple brown purse, the top of which was open enough to reveal a small notepad and pencil with some notes written on it in a neat, albeit cramped, hand. The whole look screamed librarian or, in her case, Professor of History and Anthropology.

Her latest series of articles to appear in the prestigious academic journal American Anthropologist concerned the rise of secret occult societies in America, focusing on the Thoth-Hermes Temple in Chicago and the American chapters of the Hermetic order of the Golden Dawn in New England, both founded in the first decades of the 20th Century. Throughout her academic work, Emma displayed an unparalleled skill for finding previously unknown sources, as well as an approach that took heir metaphysically claims seriously -- or at least without the open contempt that most scholars adopted to such matters. In short, she was a very, very good researcher on the occult and its sociological aspects, while retaining an open mind--a rare combination indeed. Academic had a way of breeding skepticism to such belief systems, after all. it was the unique combination of skills that drew the attention of one Hartley King.

King attempts a wan smile as he sits and introduces the investigation.

He relates that a valued friend, a local pilot named Stanley Harrington, sent news two days ago that he had sighted something 'exciting but dreadful' while on a return flight from Kingsport. King telegrammed asking urgently for further details. Harrington replied yesterday: 'DO BETTER THAN EXPLAIN. PHOTOS SOON'. Inevitably Harrington then went missing. When King sent an assistant to the aerodrome this morning, Harrington's mechanic reported that he had gone out on a flight the previous evening but not returned. The mechanic, not known for his powers of mind, had not thought to alert the police.

Most of the investigators know Harrington, a WWI Ace who returned to Arkham as a glamorous hero but struggled to make ends meet running Arkham Airfield, a tiny operation based in some fields south of the city.

Clancy is able to add that his newspaper, The Advertizer, heard reports last night that a plane was seen 'buzzing' houses in the Merchant District, on the western end of the city. Out of respect to Harrington, The Advertizer decided not to publish until they learned whether the former Ace was responsible. An anonymous report--made to the local police but passed to Clancy by a police contact-- was that a plane was later seen floating in the Miskatonic just north of the Old Wooded Graveyard. Few seem to have noticed the crash, if it indeed it took place at all. Indeed Willard Peck, the Gazette's senior reporter, asked Clancy this morning to find time to interview the witness. A local farmer named Wilbur Hare who lives in a farm west of the city, on the north side of the Miskatonic.
OOC:

I guess there could be different ways of starting the investigation, but let's start with Clancy's lead.

1. Hare's farm is a long walk but a short drive from King's house in the city's old centre. Please state whether you have an automobile with you and whether you wish to drive. By default (i.e. unless you state otherwise) only Melody has her motor with her and the rest of you will need to squeeze in. (I've no objection to other players taking their machines if they have one, btw).
It is early afternoon. The streets of Arkham are slick with rain and Fall leaves. The expedition crosses over to the north bank of the Miskatonic and heads west out of the city. The track from the western turnpike to Hare's rickety old farm is short but muddy. As they pull up near the farmhouse, some investigators get a vague sense of something amiss.
OOC:

Make a EDIT sense trouble test if you wish, rolling 4 or above on 1d6. So here's an important request: in the notes (the 'Reason' box) for the roll, state how many points you are willing to spend to add to your result. The spend must be decided before the roll to provide similarity with irl gameplay. You can attempt it without any rating in the skill.

No investigative skill attempts yet, please, let's stick to general skills for this turn. I'll let folks off the rails once we get going.

"You are welcome to squeeze in my Bugatti, darlings. If you don't mind a fast driver..." she had said upon taking leave from King.

As she speeds through the country roads west of Arkham in the red Italian car, the thrill of adventure and wind in her hair elate her. "At last, something interesting! Life can be so... underwhelming, at times. Don't you find?"

Once at the farm, she slows down the car to a halt. "Is it here? Hmm... Anyone else getting a strange feeling?.."

"Be a long walk otherwise," Alex says, climbing into the car, and holding tight as Melody takes off at a resounding pace. As they get near, and Melody asks if anyone else feels that life is underwhelming, he replies "If anything, the opposite, but then I don't have the money to afford a car like this. I'm sure that not having to think of where your next meal is coming from protects you from life like that." He doesn't say it to be unkind, simply to point out that the luxury of boredom with life is something that not everyone can afford.

As they reach their target, however, and Melody asks about the atmosphere (which Alex may have ruined himself, he thinks, Alex simply says "hmm."

In my post I work for the paper the Arkham Advertiser but I can change it to the Gazette if that works better for you.
When he hears the story about Mr. Harrington, Clancy's eyes widen in surprise. "Well, what a strange coincidence. I was given an assignment just this morning to interview an eyewitness about a supposed plane floating in the Miskatonic later today. I guess now is as good a time as any."

While he would have loved to experience riding in a Bugatti, he also didn't want to a woman to drive alone. "I'll ride with you, miss," he says as he dons his tan hat and sport coat. He was dressed in a tan three-piece suit with charcoal waistcoat and white dress shirt. His tie was eye-catching as it had an Escher-esque geometrical pattern in dark colors that tricked the eye the longer one stared at it.

During the drive he makes small talk with the woman. Clancy is polite and charming, a key to his success as a journalist to getting information from recalcitrant interviewees.

When they arrive at the farmhouse, Clancy gets a tingle up his spine that is his developed journalistic sense that something feels amiss. "I'm getting a feeling that there is something strange here." He pulls out his notepad and makes a quick jot of the time, a description of the place, and his immediate impression.

Sense Trouble (+0) - (1d6)

OOC:

We'll take the rolls in post order so Melody spends her point in vain, Alex spends and succeeds.

Please remember to deduct the points from your pool.

(I've edited Clancy's newspaper to the Advertiser--an important difference)

As the visitors disembark from the elegant motor, an immense hog charges into the yard. The beast is larger than any pig the investigators have ever seen.

Alex yelps a warning and the investigators leap back to the safety of the motor.

The hog slams into the motor's hood with a clang.

Hare appears at the doorway of his farmstead brandishing a long pole. He shoos away the pig, shouting and whacking the beast so that it retires.

"That damned gate! That hired hand of mine messed up again!"

Hare invites the visitors into the large living room of his old farmstead. He tuts when he learns that Clancy is from the "racy" Advertiser and is generally curmudgeonly, but anyway offers his guests coffee or a bowl of his own pumpkin soup.

Looking about, the investigators notice a tall bookcase, packed with ancient-looking tomes, black-and-white family photos and a table where the farmer has been working on a jigsaw of London's Houses of Parliament. A gramophone is tuned to a local station that plays old timey music.

The windows of the room look south and west over the Miskatonic and the western outskirts of the city. Just across the river, the Old Wooded Graveyard is wreathed in the golden sprays of autumnal trees. Hangman's Hill looms above the trees and graves. Beyond, the steeples of city's countless churches fade into the seasonal mist.
OOC:

(The hog attack probably deserves a stability check, but let's decide your characters feel safe in Melody's sturdy machine).

So here's the other important part of the mechanic. Using investigation skills.

Hare is not unfriendly but he is suspicious of city types and afraid that his sighting will be mis-reported or sensationalised.

Using a relevant Interpersonal skill without any point spend will coax him into providing a basic account. But he may hold out on a strange detail or two to avoid public ridicule.

Prolly best to have only one person interacting, so as not to spook him. There are plenty of other things for other investigators to ponder. Local history to recall lore about the graveyard. Geography to assess where a ditched plane might float, etc.

Please state which skill your character uses and whether you are willing to spend extra points (how many) to elicit additional details. I'll give you the 'core' clue without any spend. I won't use the offer of an additional spend unless it is genuinely useful, and I will limit the spend to what I think is reasonable (e.g. you offer two but I take none or only one).

Apr 20, 2025 1:36 pm
OOC:
I'll spend a point of Reassurance to make him feel comfortable and that I won't distort his account.
Clancy sits down on the worn sofa and gives Mr. Hare his most winning smile. "Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Mr. Hare. I can assure you I'm not one of those sensationalist tabloid reporters. Regardless of the reputation of my paper, I take my job very seriously to report the truth accurately. I can guarantee nothing you say will be taken out of context or exaggerated. I will even send you a copy of the article proof before we run the story. Although a possible downed plane might be interesting to a few people for a day or two, I doubt many people will pay much attention to it. Now then, can you tell me what you saw as accurately as possible?" He takes out his writing pad and fountain pen, ready to take notes.

Drgwen says:
While Clancy speaks to Mr. Hare, Emma stands to the side and takes the opportunity to examine the books (of course).
George Tillinghast, the antiquarian, is also eyeing the books hungrily. Hare invites he and Emma to take a look. Whereas Tillinghast focuses on the cash value of the tomes, Emma no doubt looks for works with more esoteric content. She is surprised to see a few books describing Arkham history through a vague occult focus.
OOC:

Using her Occult skill, Emma finds passages that highlight the occult notoriety of the Merchant district, the area of Arkham visible from Hare’s house. She reads about Goody Fowler, a witch executed on Hangman’s Hill. Now said to haunt the area.

That’s for free. A point spend in Occult will recover a bit more relevant to the current investigation.

Emma skims the tables of contents on several books. Seeing some topics of interest, she decides to delve deeper...
OOC:
Spending a point of Occult, for sure!

OOC:

I’ll wait for everyone to suggest an investigative skill, first, before providing the clues ( else we’ll end up doing it player by player, very slow). So far Clancy and Emma have fished up useful info, which I’ll disclose at the end of the turn.

@Dr_B,@Lemming23 If you think there’s nothing more to see here, just add an IC contribution so I know you’ve ‘gone’.

Melody adjusts her hair after the shocking encounter with the oversized hog. "Gosh! What an absolute brute that hog was! It didn't care for my red Bugatti? In Spain I saw bulls charging the red bullfighter cape... but never pigs!

"Thank goodness you warned me, Mr. Cowley! Imagine the headlines: FITZJOHN-BARNES INJURED BY A PIG [chuckles]"

When her heartbeat has somewhat calmed down, she follows the others inside.
OOC:
Melody is too shocked by the attack to investigate anything!

Alex devours the offered soup hungrily, then inspects the family photos.
OOC:
Happy to make a 1 pt Photography spend if needed.

Hare feels reassured by Clancy’s professional air, so relates his experience.

Last night, he explains, he saw an airplane circling over the Merchant District, in full view of his living room windows. The pilot seemed interested in the city block right at the edge of the cemetery. Then made a couple of passes over the old cemetery itself. On the last pass it was very quiet, as though the pilot had switched off his engine. It stalled above the cemetery, tried to pull out, but then turned over and dropped slowly into the river. He guesses few city folk saw the crash as their view was blocked by Hangman’s Hill. Or heard anything since the plane was without power.

He called the police, then drove his tractor to the turnpike to spot the crashed plane. By the time he arrived it had sunk or drifted downriver into the city proper. He saw a couple of motor boats come out from the Docks, the warehouse area just east of the Merchant District, as though they may have been picking up something from the river. They were far away, but he noticed the boats were painted rusty red.

Hare nervously pauses for a while, before relating a further detail.

"Just as the pilot was trying to pull out of its final stall I saw the aircraft engulfed in a pale green light. A ghostly light. It caused the pilot to lose control…"

He looks around timidly to see how the guests respond to the strange detail. Seeing that Melody is still shaken by her encounter with the farm’s giant hog, he brings her a blanket.

Emma finds an interesting but unnerving passage in one of Hare’s books. Superstitious locals believe that the old cemetery teems with ghouls, who appear at dusk and roam the place after dark. While everyone gives the unpredictable creatures a wide berth, some Arkham families seem to identify certain ghouls as their beloved ancestors. And expect that those born into certain old Arkham bloodlines might become ghouls after or close to their deaths. Families in the Merchant District in particular hold to this macabre idea.
Apr 21, 2025 10:41 am
Alex, having a background in photography and physics, guesses that the pilot stalled his plane to take an aerial photograph. Older aerial cameras still require very slow airspeeds to reduce photographic blur. However, as to why the pilot switched off his engines for the final pass, he can’t guess.
OOC:

…or maybe he can!?

You have probably got all the key clues you need from this scene.

There are a few options now: go to Arkham Airfield to look things over and interview Harrington’s mechanic? Go to the Docks to identify the motor boats that Hare described? Do something else?

Please, 1. Finish off the interaction with Hare, asking a question or two if you wish and 2. discuss your next move in or out of character

@Lemming23 Alex's inspection of the photos reveals little of interest to the investigation, but it was a good call (no spend).

Apr 21, 2025 12:54 pm
Clancy gives no outward expression that the ghostly green fire was any stranger a detail than the others. This has been very informative, Mr. Hare. This green light, did it look like fire? Was it in the cockpit or did it engulf the entire plane?"
Apr 21, 2025 1:06 pm
"Why, thank you Mr. Hare, most gentlemanly of you," she says when the man offers her a blanket.
These country folks can be surprisingly kind. More so than some high society fellows I met, for sure...

She settles to follow the reporter conversation with the farmer.
OOC:
would say to investigate the Docks/rusty red motor boats angle next, while the incident is recent.
Apr 21, 2025 4:47 pm
OOC:

Good question about the green light. I’ll answer all the questions in the same post, where possible. Please do your player posts all together rather than worry about stepping on each others’ toes :).

Apr 21, 2025 6:39 pm
Emma reads the strange passage about ghouls closely, scribbling the relevant facts in her notepad. She returns the book to the shelf in its proper place and spends a moment straightening the rest of them, as if this were a library or bookstore and she an employee.

Eventually she turns and stands, her hands clasped in front of her, waiting for the conversation to complete.
OOC:
Docks next works for me. If we have to go to the cemetery at some point, we should try to do so during the day, tho! To avoid the ghouls...

In response to Clancy’s question about the origin of the green light, Hare screws up his face as he attempts to recall the event.

"The whole plane was lit up. You know like you hear the sailors talking about St Elmo’s Fire playing’ on the ships masts? Like it was touched up with….fairy fire!"
OOC:

So it looks like we’re headed to the Docks. These are indicated on the clicky map in the first post (right side of the area map, obv next to the river).

Schlepping around the Docks will require extensive detective work and encounters with the low-lifes that inhabit the area. Since more than one character has Streetwise I can offer a free short-cut. Those characters know that the red motor boats are likely liquor running vessels operated by local mobsters. Said to be concealed in boathouses by day, they come out at night to ferry booze up and downriver (Harrington flew in the evening, late enough for the boats to have started business? ).

For an additional point of Streetwise I’ll reveal the likely location of the mob’s base and the identity/ character of the mob leaders.

The two automobiles make their way back down Hare’s farm track. As the machines make the turn onto the main road, the Miskatonic is lightly filmed in mist. Although it is still only mid-afternoon, the Fall sky has turned dreary grey. Across the river, the old cemetery is also hidden in misty gloom. The drivers and their passengers glimpse a figure under the trees, amidst the graves and tombs, ambling in a strange, oddly inhuman manner. The wretched thing turns its head. Though distant, its face seems more bestial than human.
OOC:

Sighting the creature, even at this distance, is a traumatic event that requires a stability test, rolling 4 or more on 1d6. You may spend Stability pool points to add to the test roll (as for a general skill). Failure of the test will result in the loss of 3 Stability pool points, determined by the severity of the trauma.

As before, please indicate your spend as part of your roll. Also please remember to deduct stability points from your sheet—the pool points spent, plus the loss of 3 points if you fail.

Apr 22, 2025 4:11 pm
Emma glances over and sees the creature and exclaims, "What… what is that? A ghoul???? Like in the story?" she quickly begins to sketch what she sees in her notepad.

George Tillinghast, the antiquarian, also sees the distant figure and is visibly shaken. He tells the investigators that he will need to retire awhile and 'take care of business in my shop'. When they return to the city, he asks to be dropped off at his antique store, on West Main street, only a block south of the Docks. He suggests places where the investigators may safely park their cars, advising against the waterfront itself. It is the last service he performs in the investigation.

The Docks are dark and rotting. Once prosperous, the goods once handled here are now carried by road and train. The road, River Street, is filled with rubbish. Decaying old jetties and boathouses line the river side of the street, empty warehouses stand on the other. Hoboes have made temporary homes here and several groups can be seen warming themselves around drum fires.

A few old boats are moored at rickety jetties, but the phantom motor boats are either not here or locked safely away.
OOC:

Just as a reminder, the goal in this scene is (presumably) to find out whether the crashed pilot was fished out of the river by the bootleggers. I'll give players a bit more leeway here, but offer a few suggestions:
--talk to the hoboes who may have witnessed the event using an appropriate IP skill
--identify operational (likely bootlegger) boathouses using (Outdoorsman ?)
--use some general skills to further the investigation. Try a couple of locks (Locksmith tn5). Climb onto boathouse roofs to peer in the skylights (athletics, tn4)

Please state clearly what skill you are using and how many points you are offering from your pool (otherwise I'll assume spend is 0).

Apr 23, 2025 7:35 pm
"You are probably right, darling," she replies to Alex.

Then, seeing the hobos gathered around a drum fire, she asks Alex to escort her and approaches them. "Let's see if we can get some gossip from those men. Would you accompany me, I'm a little out of my milieu, so to speak..."

"Good day to you, dear fellows..." she starts. "Chilly day, is it not? We would like to offer you all a warm meal, in exchange of letting us share your fire for a few moments... how does that sound, my dears?"
OOC:
She hints at the monetary offer without showing any money, intending to keep her word, but to use the bargaining power to try get some intelligence (a Bargain roll, investing 2 pool points)
She will happily chat a while, before enquiring about the plane incident, and specifically about its pilot.

edit: bad roll! any chance that the sight of some greenbacks could grant a bonus?

(I did a bad job of explaining you have returned from the rural outskirts of Arkham to a location (the Docks) back in the city. Hope that came across)

@Dr_B Bargain is an investigative skill so it doesn’t require a roll. So those 2 points of spend are good. I’ll make a deal. I’ll offer the basic breadcrumb for no spend. A slight ‘shortcut’ for one pool point spend. A more significant shortcut for two pool points.

As before I’ll try to respond to all character actions in a single post, so other players keep posting please. Plenty more stuff to find in the scene.

gotcha. So, no rolls for Investigative skills, and we only roll for General ones.
I will spend 1 point of Bargain, then - keeping one left in case useful later on, please.

Clancy watches the aristocratic woman approach the vagrants and can't help but chuckle at the juxtaposition. Calling her a 'fish out of water' was an understatement.

Clancy decides to check the warehouses. He has covered bootleg operations before and knew something about how they operate. If he can remember which moonshiners had red boats and which warehouses they operate out of would quicken their search.
OOC:
How about using Streetwise to know bootlegger info? I'd be willing to spend 1 point.

So I hope EDIT @Lemming23 doesn't mind if keep going for reasons of pace. Perhaps Alex has stayed awhile with the antiquarian to check on his health. Or is spending time in his shop, looking over the curios....

I’ll take two points from Melody in Bargain —it will be worth it— and one from Clancy in Streetwise.
Professor though she may be, Emma clambers dexterously onto the roof of a boathouse. Through its filthy skylight, she sees a sleek, powerful-looking motorboat drawn up on a ramp. Leaning against the wall inside is a sign that reads ‘‘Lucky Carter Cartage Co.’ It has been taken down from the outside of the boathouse and (hidden?) within.

Clancy knows this name as the ‘front’ for Arkham’s biggest bootlegging operation. It is run by local mob boss Danny O’Bannion, operating out of the Lucky Carter Cartage Company garage. The rear entrance to the garage building is nearby, in plain sight of the investigators. Clancy has heard that O’Bannion is approachable by those (like Melody) with high society connections. As long as the subject of O’Bannion’s real business stays out of any conversation.

The hobos are reluctant to report anything they saw the previous evening. They seem fearful of repercussions by the bootleggers, who also seem to pay them to keep silent. But Melody’s hints of payment work like a charm on one grizzled fellow. He explains what happened.

The bootleggers saw the wreck of the plane drifting past in the river’s powerful current. Their motorboats were already in the water, getting ready for their night’s work. One of the boats drove out and hauled the pilot out of his plane. They brought him back to the boathouse where they called their bosses on a special ‘phone. O’Bannion himself appeared from the rear of the Lucky Carter garage. He ordered the pilot to be taken to St Mary’s hospital. Before he was taken away in an unmarked automobile, O’Bannion carefully removed the pilot’s goggles, headwear and pistol.
OOC:

Where next? The hospital to interview the pilot (if he's alive/conscious)? The Lucky Clover office to risk a talk with O'Bannion? Or head back to the graveyard as was discussed earlier?

Please discuss IC or OOC as before, and pose any final questions you might have to the local down-and-outs.
Apr 25, 2025 2:53 pm
OOC:
You got me confused with @Lemming23 I think lol. I will explain the information I know about the bootleggers.
"We could speak to O'Bannion, but if the pilot is alive I think we'll get more information from him. And I'd rather not get the attention of someone like that if I can help it."
Apr 25, 2025 9:36 pm
After carefully descending from the roof of the boathouse, Emma discusses the info with the others. She admits, "I do not feel comfortable speaking to a man like O'Bannion; I'll leave that to others if anyone would like to do that. If we have time before sunset, then we could by the hospital. But I would like to go to the graveyard before dark."
Apr 25, 2025 10:01 pm
After sharing the intelligence she learned from the hobos, Melody comments, "Hmm... Why do you think O'Bannion personally removed goggles and the other paraphernalia? Rather bizarre, dont you find, dears?"

"Anyway, I agree that we should go visit the poor darling at the hospital... What a ghastly experience! "
Apr 26, 2025 4:03 am
"I also wondered about removing those specific items. It could be they were worth money, or maybe something was strange about them. We should tuck that information away for later though, it won't do us much good accusing a known gangster of theft. As for where to, we can either split up and check out the hospital and cemetery, or we stick together and do one today and one tomorrow. I think the hospital is more important because we do not know Mr. Harrington's condition."
Apr 26, 2025 12:19 pm
As the investigators complete their discussion, a vagrant arrives from a filthy alley, muttering curses. He combines biblical phrases that condemn the rich and promise vengeance upon them.

The fellow picks up a chair leg and assaults, of all people, redwood Clancy. Although he does not seem to pose much of a threat in physical terms, the fellow seems deranged.
OOC:

Fight!

1. Roll a fighting skill tn3 (scuffling, weapons or --shooting?) on 1d6. As usual, add points from your skill pool if you wish.
2. If you make the tn3, roll 1d6 damage (subtract-2 if you you are using fisticuffs, see pg 12 condensed rules for weapon damage mods but usually +0 )

You don't need to post in any particular order, we'll sort out the order of actions later. In game, turn order is based on your fighting skill, so you should all normally go before the madman. But I'll say that his positioning allows him to go second, after Clancy, so: Clancy, madman, everyone else.

I'll roll for him now...

Recovering from the shock of the sudden attack, and angered by the rude interruption, Melody steps forward. "Oh! you absolute, dreadful brute! Why are you assaulting Clancy!?! Take THAT!!"

Well, I tell you it's true that certain families are linked to the...creatures... in the Old Graveyard. My family, too. St Mary's is only a few blocks further south of the river, next to the University campus. It is staffed by Misk U teachers and student doctors. Patients take their chances as to whether they will be treated by a venerable surgeon or a Ragtime- or ‘Jazz’-crazed medical student.
OOC:

The building is actually visible at the bottom left edge of our clicky map, just under the sports building with big 'MU' letters). Corner of S West Street and College St.
The desk nurse has no record of a patient named Harrington, or even heard of a recently rescued pilot. But a passing student doctor suggests they may be asking after "the crazy egg" who was dropped off anonymously the previous evening.

"He's a pilot!" the nurse is surprised. "We thought he was some kind of motorcyclist. Harrington, you say, from Arkham Airfield? At least now we can contact his next of kin.""
OOC:

I'll fast forward through this bit for PbP purposes... Using investigative skills like credit rating, reassurance, etc. the investigators gain access to the patient, supervised by the student doctor ..
Harrington has been isolated in a small ward on the top floor of the hospital. He is pale, greenish and seems barely able to move. He responds to the visitors’ questions in a hoarse whisper. His responses generally peter out, or do not seem to be relevant to the questions posed.

During the conversation, Harrington raises a shaking hand , attempting but failing to point out of the hospital window.

A medical chart hangs on the end of his bed. The student doctor does not seem to mind if the investigators look at the extensive notes scribbled over the chart.
OOC:

While still worthwhile, attempts to use interpersonal investigative skills will be limited by H’s ability to understand and communicate.

Other avenues of investigation may prove equally or more useful.

Please indicate as usual which skills you wish to use, and how much spend (if any) you are offering to get bonus info. As before, I’ll gather all the suggestions before making a GM response.

Would evidence collection be useful? I could check out the greenish hue, check through any other personal items he has with him or the doctors confiscated?

Melody steps closer to the patient, extending a hand to hold his. "Oh, the poor darling! What an ordeal you had! I'm Melody Fitzjohn-Barnes. Can you say yes or no with your head, dear?"

"Were you taking pictures from the plane? If so, do you still have the camera, darling? Or did those men who fished you out of the river take it?"

She will ask in her most compassionate tone, simplifying questions to a yes/no answer.

Emma can get her clue for free...
Emma cannot rule out the crash itself being the main contributor to his present state. But she is also reminded of some obscure accounts, collected in a volume of esoteric Jungian lore. These dealt with travellers in remote Austrian locations who encountered otherworldly beings --fairies, witches, but sometimes confusingly vampiry--and were befuddled. In one recent (post-war) story, in the Austrian Alps, a wanderer was found mute, semi-paralyzed and also turned green.
OOC:
I'll give Melody the clue for free, especially since she found a sensible way for Harrington to communicate.
Quote:
"Were you taking pictures from the plane? If so, do you still have the camera, darling? Or did those men who fished you out of the river take it?"
The pilot understands Melody's strategy and is able to answer with shaky nods. He was taking a photo. The rescuers did take his camera. O'Bannion now has it.

"Show ....King...." he manages to whisper.

Clancy is not able to make sense of the medical notes--neither is the sleepy med student able to enlighten him much. Some of words are legible and self-explanatory. Biofluorescence. Paralysis, fading [scribble in Latin] temporary. Electromagnetic or electrochemical trauma...
OOC:

For Clancy's 1 point --a decent find.
Clancy looks through the box where Harrington's clothes have been stowed. His battered leather coat and boots are clearly those of a wartime USAS pilot. Motorcyclist, indeed! But without the flying hat and goggles, Clancy guesses, most folk would not make the connection.
[ +- ] USAS WW1 pilot gear if you are interested
In the coat pocket he finds a sodden mess of paper. Carefully laying this out on a nearby medical table, he is able to extricate several pages--a letter, a bill and a map that has been crudely traced onto thin paper. The words 'LOS on mystery light' are written on the back.

The letter is from a firm of attorneys demanding payment to debtors. Harrington's business is not going well.

https://i.imgur.com/Aa7xoVP.png
OOC:

Any further questions?

Perhaps time for a conflab , IC or OOC , to discuss what might be going on ? Or at least to decide on the next course of action.

It's about 4pm. Still time to get to the graveyard and explore, though the afternoon is darkening.

Apr 30, 2025 9:22 am
When the poor pilot shows signs of needing to be left alone to recover, Melody steps out of his hospital room, consulting with his companions.

"What a frightful experience, that poor fellow... " she says stepping out.

"Listen, my dears... I've been dabbling in Photography a little while back, and... developing images is an awfully boring business! I don't think someone in O'Bannion's line of work would endure something like that, with all the, you know... beatings and threats and killings that he'd rather be doing!"

She paces in the hospital hallway, like a sleuth from some dime novel, "so it got me thinking... there aren't that many places in Arkham where one can get some photographs printed. Especially on a fast turnaround, from a camera that's gone for a swim in the Miskatonic waters... Why don't I call a few people I know, and try to see if we can find out where O'Bannion has sent the photos to be salvaged and printed? I am sure O'Bannion's goons would have left an impression, when commissioning the work..."

"Let me make some calls, darlings... we can meet tomorrow morning at Church Street Cafeteria, on Church and Garrison?" Energized by her initiative, she grabs her things and springs towards the exit, calling over her shoulder, "oh, I will give Mr. King a call too, I'm sure he'll be delighted to know his pilot friend is in one piece!"
OOC:
Melody will:
-call King, reporting they found Harrington, and where he currently is. She will mention the green glow, and that King wanted us to show him something, whether photos or the map, is not clear. She will mention O'Bannion's involvement, and that he got the camera and other items.

-spend 2 points from Credit Rating to reach the contacts she has made in the world of Photography, to try find out if one of the available labs has received a forceful commission for a special job, and has been delivered a dripping wet camera to salvage and print photos from pronto, "or else", by some goons.

So Melody is heading off to perform those two tasks, whihc I've noted, expecting that others will pursue leads of their own.

So please indicate what your character's late afternoon/evening activity might be. If you can't think of a productive way to contribute to the investigation, just indicate what ordinary work duties they might have to get back to. As they walk away, you hear her asking to Alex, "so, tell me... have you ever photographed a ghost, then?"
May 1, 2025 12:52 pm
"Sadly, no. I've taken quite a few pictures of what were purported to be ghosts, but usually they're just muslin cloth regurgitated, someone playing the fool, even film projections. Still no ghosts though."
May 1, 2025 2:42 pm
"That sounds like a great idea," Clancy says to Melody. "That is assuming Mr. O'Bannion has tried to get the photos developed. If not then we can pay him a visit tomorrow. As for me, I have to write up an article on my interview with Mr. Hare. I'll see you tomorrow at the Cafeteria. Stay safe." Clancy tips his hat in farewell and heads to his office to write up the interview for his boss, William Peck.
May 1, 2025 2:50 pm
"I would assume that if he wants the camera, he wants the pictures too. It could be he's just concerned with not having photos of his boats out there, and wants to destroy them, of course. He may also have someone on staff that can develop the photos - I can do so myself without too much trouble - but I think, on the whole, that Melody is correct, and that he wants to know what's on these photos. He may have an interest in what's going on too, so at some point we may have to talk to him, or one of his agents.
May 1, 2025 7:15 pm
King receives Melody's call with interest. He is relieved that the investigators have found Harrington. He knows who O'Bannion is (far from common knowledge). He offers no advice as to whether the photographs are a priority, asking Melody to trust in her own intuition.

Only the description of the phenomenon of the green light seems unexpected to him.

When Melody and Alex drop in on the wife of an important local dealer in photographic equipment, the lady mentions Jack Hall. He is a young photographer who has recently spent a small fortune buying silver nitrate, even though his position as a junior photographer for the Advertiser would seem to make this expense unnecessary.
OOC:
.... assuming Melody (or Clancy, Hall's colleague) call or meet Hall, he will respond on these lines:

"Sure. Maybe I did do something for O'Bannion. The guy's a local businessman, appreciates my talent. Yeah, I developed some pictures using my own silver nite. O'Bannion's guys snatched them away before I got much of a look. Weren't too polite about it either..."
...

"I'm not going over this again! Pictures showed blurry aerial stuff. Looked like the weirdoville blocks out on the west edge of town. Pics of some guys running around in the western cemetery. A kind of round blotch near the dairy there. Maybe the film was damaged? Do you know those duds at the dairy still use a horse and cart? They were staring up at the camera the whole time, the washouts!"
OOC:

Just 1 point from Melody's 's photography pool required.
Emma's work in the city archives and Misk U library starts out well, but runs into frustrating dead ends. She has occasionally come across pages before that have been removed with a note "removed for restoration" (followed with a cryptic symbol) attached. Usually this is blamed on mold, carried by the dampness of the Miskatonic. But this search always seems to end with such a find.

Nevertheless, she is able to identify the names of local Merchant District families buried in the graveyard. Most older families have some ancestors resting there. One short list includes the Cowley / 'Cowlee' name. Emma also finds a few translated pages from a work known as Les Cult des Ghoules (full copy also removed for 'restoration' ). Different theories are offered as to the necrogenesis of ghouls. One that it is a congenital curse, carried by some family lines as a recessive but persistent "gene". Though the tome does not use this fashionable new term.

There is no mention anywhere of green light.
OOC:

That's for 0 points.

I don't want to get into drives too much in the adventure--you'd likely all be in the graveyard now otherwise. But we can link Alex to a potential ghoul heritage and refund him 2 stability pool points.
May 1, 2025 7:29 pm
At around 11 o'clock in the evening, Melody gets a call from King. King apologizes for the late call but asks her to attend an incident in West Arkham, on W Main St, near the cemetery. There has been a report of 'vandals' running down the street from the cemetery.

The Arkham police used to call in King and his defunct Society to attend such unexplained incidents. King's Society would offer advice and help to keep a discreet handle on events. King has suggested that Melody and her new colleagues may wish to attend and offer similar assistance.

A single police vehicle will be stationed to meet them when they arrive.
OOC:

What is your character doing at 11pm?

They will presumably agree to meet on W Main St, taking a lift from Melody or Emma if necessary. It is completely dark when you arrive and see the parked cop vehicle...

May 1, 2025 9:10 pm
When she got the call, Emma was curled up in bed, in her nightgown, sipping chamomile tea and enjoying her "leisure reading," Renaissance-era Italian and French romances. She agrees to meet King [@Drgwen Keeper edit: not actually meeting King, King is not attending himself] as soon as she can be there; she also offers to drive anyone who needs a ride.

Then she hops out of bed, setting her book aside and carefully marking her place, and quickly dresses and pins up her hair. A quick powder and she’s out the door!
May 2, 2025 2:00 am
Clancy is a follower of the adage "early to bed, early to rise, makes a man wealthy, healthy, and wise" so he is already asleep when he gets the phone call. He grouses a bit but agrees to meet for whatever "situation" had occurred. He dresses, washes his face, and grabs his journalist's bag on the way out the door. Thankfully Emma offered him a ride so he didn't have to worry about getting there.
May 2, 2025 2:59 pm
Alex was at home reading up on the latest spiritualist mediums that had set up shop in the vicinity in order to visit them to see if they're the usual charlatans or something real, when he hears the knock at his door, and greets Melody with surprise, then sets off with her in her car to meet with the others.

😅 Melody is always happy to have passengers holding on for their dear life as she sends her Bugatti careening at top speed in the old Arkham streets
Melody was taking a bath in her oversized Art Deco sunken bathroom, when the phone rang. The late night call was very exciting, so she dressed in a hurry and jumped in the Bugatti, letting the wind dry her hair.

She stopped by Cowley's address, honking the horn repeatedly, and triggering irate responses from several windows.
"Apologies to your neighbors, dear... but we're on call!" she tells Alex.
Once on the scene, she spots Clancy and Emma. She shares with them their findings about the pilot photographs. "Alex and I got a description of the photos... there's some round blotch near the dairy in some of them, it seems.. we should definitely try understand whatever that is..."

"Oh, the police are here... Mr. Bleasdale... Clancy, you speak Copper I believe? Why don't you go and see what the fuss is about?"

The investigators are surprised to find a patrol vehicle parked in W Main St, close to the cemetery. Detective Ray Stuckey is standing in the street with an elderly local. Alex, a 'Merchant' man himself, recognises the elder as a stone cutter called Elijah Potts.

The auto's lights are on full beam, illuminating the graves and tombs of the wooded graveyard at the end of the street. A chill autumn fog hangs over the eerie scene.

The detective nods politely as the investigators approach. Stucky gets rid of the young patrolman, sending him to check on houses at the other end of the street.

"Ain't that the berries! Clancy Bleasdale got roped into this? Taking over from King and his Spook Crew? I'd stick to reporting on flower shows if I were you."

Stuckey turns to Elijah.

"Mr Potts, everyone here is safe now--these are Mr King's colleagues. Arkham people, good people. Do you want to tell us all the real story of what happened?"

The old stonecutter looks sadly at the arrivals.

"You're King's new folk? I hope things work out for you. Anyway, I'll try to help you like I helped King's crew in the old times..."

"Well, the "Old Citizens", paid a visit. Not just one or two like usual. A whole pack of them. Like ...hyenas, leaping and hopping. They've been roused for days, even coming out in the daytime. Outsiders being seeing them. Not good. Something has got them all restless."

"They ran into the yard behind the Public Schools building there. Halfway down the road on the right there. There was a fearful noise like a battle, a fight between devils. Then they came back carryin' --something, I fear a person--between them. But I hid when they got close. Their blood was roused. Couldn't make out who or what it was they were carryin' ... "
OOC:

Both Stuckey and Potts are cooperative, if cautious, and will support the investigators as long as the young patrolman (an outsider from Boston) does not witness any events.

We're getting into the Third Act, now. Rather than collect all your directions together, this time I may respond a bit more sequentially, but hoping that doesn't inhibit people form posting when they feel like it.
As usual please specify which investigative skills you are using and how many points you are offering (default is 0)

Before heading off to investigate further, Emma speaks to Potts. She begins by trying to remind neutral, but by the end of her question, she is becoming somewhat alarmed. She asks, "The 'Old Citizens'? Do you mean what I think you mean, Mr. Potts? Do deceased members of old Arkham families rise and walk as ghouls‽ And this is commonly known?!"
OOC:
If she had had time, Emma would have done as much research as possible. My Drive is Knowledge, after all, and my skill set is mostly research oriented. I'm happy to spend 1 or 2 points of Library Use for something useful?
May 3, 2025 1:54 am
Potts winces and looks over his shoulder at the graveyard, as though its denizens are likely to hear.

"We don’t use that ‘g’ word round here. The Old Citizens. The Neighbours, especially if you live in this block. And no, it’s not common knowledge except for those who need to know. Real old timers like me. A few in the city government and law. King’s operators. A handful more."

"But it’s true. If you were born hereabouts there’s some chance you have the Yard Curse. I thank the Lord that I have grown old without showing signs of it. But you are never safe. Some can ‘turn’ even after their apparent death. Mrs Chaplin told me that. She was one of King’s old team…"
OOC:

I’ll stick to the account in the earlier post that information about Arkham’s ghouls has been systematically excised from archives — this is Emma’s main discovery. But for the 2 extra library pool points she can have learned a formula of words that might ward against ghouls or even allow for parley. It would require an interpersonal spend such as reassurance. Even Credit Rating as a sign of respectable local roots. Not a spell as such, more a shibboleth. No stability roll required.
May 3, 2025 2:00 am
OOC:
I'll take it! Thanks!
May 3, 2025 3:59 am
Clancy smiles at the suggestion. "There is no excitement in flower shows. Nor much investigating to be done. And speaking of investigating, this seems like a great use for my skills."

When Emma mentions ghouls, Clancy gives her the side-eye. "You can't seriously mean there are undead...creatures roaming around Arkham, do you? This could just be gangsters using scary stories as a cover to deter people from sticking their noses in gang business. I think the fastest way to clear this up is to inspect behind that building where the noises were heard. Sounds to me like a kidnap attempt or maybe a gang fight and an injured member was carried away for medical attention."
May 3, 2025 6:58 am
Melody thinks of the strange figure they spotted in the graveyard, from a distance. "But... Clyde dear, we saw one with our own eyes! Remember?"

To Potts, she says, "Oh, this is SO useful, Mr. Potts, thank you! We will make sure to tell Mr King how helpful you are being, for our investigation!"

"Now tell me, there is a dairy nearby... We heard they still use a cart and a horse, so charming! Do you know who runs the dairy? Someone was flying over it, and told us of some... strange round blotch at the dairy, visible from the air? Do you have any idea what it could be?"
OOC:
trying Reassurance, investing 1 point if needed.
May 3, 2025 12:30 pm
Clancy rubs his neck. "I saw something, sure, but it would be a mighty leap to assume it was an undead creature over a vagabond or an elderly person with a back problem."
May 3, 2025 12:53 pm
"You think all this is smoke and mirrors, Bleasdale? I hope you are right."

Potts shows interest in Melody’s mention of a dairy.

"It’s right over there on River. Arkham Dairy. You say there was a blotch close to it on a photo? Can you show me?"
OOC:

Just a quick clarification that the splotch was near the dairy, not on it.

The dairy and Pott’s house are both marked on the clickable map with blue tags, close to the cemetery.

If you share what you know about the photo with the two men, Stuckey will offer an opinion.
"Seems like we only have a second hand account of a photo of something. But a splotch on an aerial photo would be something big. A building say. I’d put my money on the abandoned church on the corner there. If there’s anything in this area with enough spook energy to show up in a photo, it’s that’s place."
OOC:

The West Church — 561 W Main Street— is also on the map, purple tag.

"Now look, that young patrolman grew up in Beantown, not Arkham. I don’t want him catching on that there’s something amiss here. Let’s go up to the yard behind the Schools building where Mr Potts said the ghouls — Applesauce! Sorry Mr Potts, Neighbours — had some sort of fight. "

"Then we’ll have to take off and leave it to you specialists."
OOC:

Anybody have/ willing to spend anything in History?

Public Schools Building - 601 W. Main Street - is also on the map, marked in grey. Do you accompany Stuckey and the patrolman into the yard behind it? Or hang back and see what happens?
May 3, 2025 4:07 pm
Fascinated by what she has learned I the library, Emma is equally excited to hear about the strange phenomena making impressions on photographic film, even when taken from the sky above. And why were the men at the dairy all staring up at the plane? Seems odd. I wonder if they are responsible for the green light that brought the plane down? We shall have to investigate eventually. But first, the yard, and the church.
OOC:
Emma has 4 points in History! She'll spend 1 or 2 if needed. She will follow the others to the yard, but hang back.

Emma knows the established lore about the church. Built in 1801, abandoned in 1878 when moaning sounds came from the coffin of a co-founder suspected of wizardry.

Emma knows several further legends about the old place. Only those born in the sound of the church bells can be considered true Old Arkhamites. There is a secret ‘observation cell’ in the steeple’s internal scaffolding. It was used in the age of sail to sight ships coming up the Miskatonic. Later, by astronomers (and perhaps magicians) to perform observations. The church bells are lined with silver but have never been removed or damaged. Witches, flying over the Commonwealth on Samhain night, we’re believed to use the church as a landmark. And so on…
OOC:

Just 1 pool point from history…

May 3, 2025 8:56 pm
Emma shares what she knows about the Old West Church. She speculates, "I wonder if someone was up in that steeple and saw the plane? Maybe decided they wanted to bring it down? Could that blurry spot be where the church is?""
May 3, 2025 10:42 pm
Melody follows the detective out of sight of the Boston patrolman, and to the Public Schools yard. She casts a glance at the patrolman, enjoying the secrecy.
"How thrilling, is it not?" she whispers to her companions.
May 3, 2025 10:58 pm
"Ok, let’s take a look. Bleasdale? Mr Cowley? Are you going to come with us?"

Stuckey notes that Emma is hanging back and nods, acknowledging her decision.

He orders the patrolman away, asking him to ‘phone a report from the police call box on River Street. Once the young man is out of sight, he draws and readies two police .45s, sticking one in his belt.

"Not smoke and mirrors, no. I saw something, all right. Creepy in fact. But it was all in shadow and without much detail. Hardly what I would call definitive proof. How many children see monsters in their closets or under their beds?" Clancy follows the others to the Public Schools yard, taking in details of the surroundings, jotting down notes in his notebook. "Thrilling isn't the word I would use. Maybe if it were not so late at night it would be. Why can't more secret things happen during daylight hours?" he grumbles.
May 4, 2025 1:41 am

Stuckey advances into the alley that leads to the rear of the Schools Building. He clicks on a police flashlight but its beam seems ineffective in the unlighted space.
OOC:

Looks like Kirlian photography doesn’t become current until 1940s but it is an interesting direction.

So breaking out of regular post order was fun as an experiment, but I need to go back to my usual pbp turn order — one GM post, then every player. Just so we’re all reacting to the same information.

Please indicate whether you are are next to Stuckey, right behind him, staying well back. etc. Also what you are carrying.

If you are beside or right behind Stuckey, make a sense trouble test, 1d6 plus a spend if you wish. EDIT: Removing this request as its better to roll only when combat takes place.

I’m going to keep moving. Drgwen has said that Emma is ‘holding back’ and we now know Melody and Clancy are next to Stuckey.

I’ll place Alex immediately behind the front row.

Emma watches the unlikely company advance into the inky darkness of the alley.

As they turn into the yard at the building’s rear, Stuckey’s flashlight flickers over a dreadful tableau. Three ghouls perch on a brick wall at the yard’s rear. Bald pated, yet shaggy and hoofed like goats. As Arkhamites, the investigations have heard tales of these creatures since their childhood. The sight of the three monsters feels like a impossible scene from a nightmare. Yet also oddly familiar.

Long tongues lolling, the creatures draw themselves up on their powerful haunches as if to leap at the intruders. They hiss a warning.

"They are right there," gasps Stuckey.

The flashlight trembles in his grasp, casting a quavering beam. He aims his pistol directly at the creatures , but refrains from shooting, clearly doubting the party’s odds of survival if they engage.
OOC:

The terrifying encounter requires a stability roll, tn4, losing 4 additional points if you fail. Emma won’t have seen the monsters so does t need to roll. @Lemming23 can decide whether he’s close enough to be involved.

Stuckey will back off unless the investigations suggest a different action. Whether the ghouls will allow a peaceful withdrawal is yet to be seen.

OOC:

Fair enough, Alex is far enough back so as not to see the trio of frights. Emma is even further back in the lane. We are hitting the two day mark so I’ll puppet Emma and have her watch from the distance.

@Dr_B We don’t have the push mechanic in core Trail (unless it’s a 2e thing). So please just go with the first roll and take the 4 stability points hit.

The ghouls snarl when Melody refuses to back away. One of the creatures makes a guttural snarl. Then points a bony finger upwards , towards the spire of the old church.

The three horrors scramble from the wall and head westward into the darkness , scrambling yard to yard in the direction of the graveyard.

Stuckey gives an audible sigh.

"You stood your ground, lady? I don’t know whether that makes you brave or crazy. Mr Cowley? Professor? How about you come and join us in here? No medals for you, though."

Once the ghouls have departed, the yard presents a grisly scene. The ground is thick with wet autumn leaves. Yet a severed hand, gnarled and greenish like a cartoon witch’s , is clearly visible in Stuckey’s torchlight. Blood spatters the wall on which the ghouls were resting.

As they search the scene, the investigators also become aware of a low but persistent hum coming from the direction of the church.
OOC:

As usual, please suggest which investigative skills you could use and whether you are willing to spend any pool points.

A couple of meta points: I’m going to keep to a two-day rule, puppeting characters if necessary to get to the end of the adventure. Obv puppeting isn’t great, so let me know if it’s not really working out for you . I will understand as this is a ‘test’ game and might not have worked out as you expected. Also, this is the last scene where Stuckey will be present, in case you find his presence a bit railroading. He’s just a breadcrumb on the trail.

Clancy breathes a sigh of relief.

"Ok, now those were ghouls. No doubts about it. What a scoop! But I don't think many readers would believe me and I'd just tarnish my reputation."

Clancy is deep in thought for a moment and then shakes his head.

"Stuckey, what about this hand? Doesn't it look strange?" Clancy looks approaches the hand and then the blood splash, looking for a corpse or any information on what the ghouls were doing here.

Sorry, I think it was the terminology that threw me. IIRC Push means something else —something like a resource point you can spend— in some versions of Gumshoe. Maybe in the new version of ToC , too, which I haven’t seen. I agree that rerolls are probably not intended for stability rolls.

Is Melody going to investigate the scene? I’d prefer to get it into the same post cycle.

Once the others indicate that the ghouls had left, Emma tentatively moves forward and sees the grisly scene. Her curiosity gets the better of her, though, as it always does, and she begins to investigate. She examines the hand and its green glow.

Does the hand appear to have been severed by a surgical procedure or ritual knife, perhaps? Or does it look gnawed on, ripped, or some other messy violent act? And does the greenishness resemble the green said to have surrounded the plane, and which left a sickly green hue on our pilot?

Next, Emma turns to the Church, trying to identify the hum, and looking up at the steeple. Is there anything unusual here?
OOC:

Stuckey sees that Melody has been struck with terror and disgust.

He approaches her gingerly and considers offering a her steadying swig from his hip flask. But he looks at the elegant woman and thinks better of it.

"I’m sorry, " he says. " I’d like to say it gets better but it doesn’t."

Ghoul against ghoul? Clancy doubts it. The hand is rubbery and inhuman. Even more so than a ghoul’s bony manus. Turning it over, he sees that horrid suckers pucker in its palm and near its fingertips. The hand of a devil? Or something more alien still?!

Emma also considers the severed hand. Her guess is that the member has been torn from its socket through sheer force. The spillage of dark green blood nearby confirms this. The hand is dull green, rather than brightly luminous like the light that enveloped Harrington.

Green like a toad…suddenly the horrible otherness of the thing strikes her…

Alex and Emma swap notes on the steeple. The old structure soars into the blackness of the autumnal New England sky. Emma knows much already about its structure and the lookout platform within. One odd thing that strikes her is the weather vane at its tip. Perhaps it is a trick of the light, but the distant vane seems to faintly tremble. As though viewed through a shimmer of heat or cold.

Alex also stares and slowly confirms Emma’s impression. Some kind of force—a magnetic field perhaps— is operating around or in front of the steeple’s tip!
OOC:
Clancy and Melody are still reeling from the shock of their close quarter encounter with the ghouls and so are inured to the lesser horror of the freaky hand. But Alex and Emma need to make a tn4 stability check or lose 2 stability points.

I’ll just take 1 physics pool point from Alex. All other point offers refunded.

Please discuss your thoughts in character or ooc and decide what to do next….every other day posting is fine rather than daily :)

Melody sees the detective's half-gesture, reaches out for his flask and snatches it from his hand, gulping down a swig or three!

Somewhat fortified by the cheap booze, she returns the flask and looks surprised at her companions, apparently made of sterner stuff and already investigating the gruesome scene.

"Er... you know how we said not to go near that graveyard at night? I think that was... a wise idea?"
OOC:
the shocked Melody would rather wait for the morning to investigate the dairy and the church itself, but the horror-loving player would press on tonight and get the full spooky experience! 😎 Any thoughts?
May 9, 2025 1:11 pm
Clancy looks at the hand and feels a bit queasy. "Does it look squid-like to anyone else? These suckers here," he points to the palm and fingertips. "They look like the suckers of a squid or octopus. Maybe from the river?"
OOC:
I'm good with either too! I think day time is safer, but night is more interesting lol.
May 9, 2025 1:20 pm

So bringing in drives slightly, I’ll offer 2 stability points to each character that wishes to go on this night ( where your drive suggests this would be your choice). I won’t penalise for acting against drives though, yet.

"So should we continue even though night is falling? You say these ghouls didn't attack you? Perhaps we can safely travel and investigate after all. Who knows, maybe they smelled something on us that reminded them of family..."
May 9, 2025 2:28 pm
"Maybe you're right..."she responds, a residue of doubt in her voice.

Well, girl, wasn't adventure what you were looking for? Now that you have it, are you going to chicken out? she thinks.

Finally coming to a decision, no doubt aided by the generous helping of booze, she straightens up. "Let's do this. If those dreadful things, the... ghouls and the... squids, are at war with each other, they won't be looking for us. And it might easier to enter these places by night than in daytime... I'm in!"

Just in case folks haven’t checked the map. The ghouls returned west, back to their graveyard at the western edge of the city. The church is at the other, eastern end of the block. So you’d be heading away from the ghouls anyhoos.

Only issue of course is—what’s going at the church?

(6) = 6

May 10, 2025 1:14 am
"I'm going to have to take this."

Grimacing, the detective unfolds an evidence bag and gingerly pushes the hand inside using his flashlight.

"I have to go. Shows over, I guess. Mr Potts said there was a fight here. Turns out the 'locals' took exception to this guy, whoever or whatever it was. And now they've gone home. I hope you fellas agree and take yourselves home, too..."

He looks around at the investigators.

"You're not going home are you? Bunch of crazy eggs. That's why King chose you."

Stuckey goes looking for the patrolman, leaving the 'crazy eggs' to the darkness of the yard.

It is a relief to walk eastwards, away from the unlit west of town and the fog-filled cemetery. The church at the end of the block is a spooky, derelict looking place. But at least it offers the adventurers a view of the Main Street shopping district with its brightly lit stores and billboards. There's even a drugstore open, where a clerk busies himself with boxes of soap powder. A cheerful scene.

The church's main gate has been locked and bolted from within. A side door seems to be locked. At the west end of the church, steps lead down into the crypt. The gate has been forced open, allowing access to the utterly dark space beneath the church.
OOC:

Recover 2 stability points each for acting within your drive.

Two decisions please, which I hope we can address in the same round:

1. The side door lock can be picked by anybody with points in locksmith (no spend needed). Else it's down into the crypt with you.

2. There are two flashlights --one in each car---please state who is carrying one. Without a flashlight the church interior will be dark, the crypt pitch black. Please mention any other gear your character has ready. And any other actions/ ideas you might have prior to entry.

May 10, 2025 4:32 am
Emma breathes a sigh of relief as they leave the graveyard area. She arrives at the Church and surveys their options. She says, "I can't open that lock, so my vote is to go through the basement." She digs in her purse and pulls out a pen light for one hand and a revolver for the other.
OOC:
UGH! I forgot I had a spell that lets me try to parlay with the ghouls!
May 10, 2025 7:40 am
She sees Emma producing her penlight. "Light! Of course! You are a genius, darling, you know that? I have one flashlight in the ol' Bugatti, let me fetch it."

She comes back with the flashlight, cheered up by the thought of being able to dispel some of the darkness.

Then she looks at the church side door lock. "Hmm... Wait. In the old mansion, they always kept many doors locked, when I was a child. So my little brother and I learned to pick the locks! I was so bored, even then!"
She passes the flashlight to Alex. "Will you be a darling and make some light for me? Let's see if I've still got it..."
She removes a hairpin and busies herself with the lock.

It eventually opens with a satisfactory click.
Now the policemen are gone, she readies her small purse revolver.

She grins at the others. "Shall we dance?"
OOC:
Melody has 1 point in Locksmith.

2. She gives the second flashlight to Alex.

1. Since the anomaly was in the spire of the church, going into the church makes more sense than down in the crypt, to find a way up to the tower?

"You gals sure are useful. That's probably why King chose you. I'll go first if someone wants to give me a light."
May 10, 2025 8:04 pm
Emma smiles at Melody's skill. Then she hands Clancy her flashlight.
May 11, 2025 1:10 am
"Of course," Alex replies as Melody asks him to hold the flashlight, which he does, steadily aimed at the lock as she goes to work. He takes out his own pistol too, holding that in his right as he holds the flashlight on his left. "We should all stick together, since there's only two light sources."

The side door admits the investigators to the rear of church nave, behind rows of wrecked pews. The church's interior is dusty and cobwebbed, fetid with rot and the musty stink of bats.

To the party's left is the empty rear of the church, with doors to some abandoned offices and a dismal side-chapel. To their right, rows of pews face the altar , a raised pulpit and carved doors leading to the bell tower steps and larger (Main Street) entrance .

A creature crouches in the aisle, staring at the investigators over the pews. It is utterly alien and nightmarish in appearance. Spindly, long-limbed like a toad , yet with shaggy white fur covering its torso. Its eyes are hidden in deep folds and a tubular mouth sports needle-like teeth. Its right hand is missing. Its raises its left, remaining hand which clasps a twisted metallic tube.
OOC:

Those with any rating in firearms will intuit that the creature has levelled a weapon to shoot at the party. Your character can still shoot first if their firearms rating is >4 and readiness of a weapon has been described in the previous post. Slightly afterwards otherwise.

Target is tn4 for a firearms test, due to the partial cover provide by the pews. Please roll damage if you succeed.

You can instead (i.e. in place of shooting) duck out of the door or hide behind a pew with a tn4 fleeing test.
May 11, 2025 1:43 pm
Emma slowly enters the area, swinging her pen light this way and that as she looks around. In her other hand, she grips her revolver. Suddenly, she sees it. Some...thing squatting amidst the pews. And... it's aiming some kind of weapon at them!

She raises her revolver and fires!

OOC: That's a hit for 4 damage.

Melody reads the monster's gesture as preparing to shoot some weapon. She sees Emma reacting, and is quick to echo her shots with some of her own!
"You horrible brute!"
OOC:
had the purse gun ready. Spending 3 of her 6 Firearms pool. Not sure what a Derringer-type revolver damage could be?

OOC:

Lemming might be waiting , deciding he would shoot after the monster? Not sure, but I’ll take the monster’s turn now.

I’m going to load all its remaining ‘firearms’ pool points onto the roll so it’s a dead cert—no roll needed.

The beast utters an alien bleat as the bullets wing and stagger it. But it manages at last to operate the sinister device.

A wide beam of baleful green light floods the space occupied by the shooters.
OOC:

Everyone make a sort of ‘saving throw’, athletics tn5. If you fail, you are wrapped up in the beam and drop paralysed, sharing the same fate as Harrington. If you succeed, you manage to have fired and dropped in time.

Clancy can make the roll at tn3, given he’s already in some cover.

Lemming can retro-decide whether Alex was trying to make the shot, or dropped like Clancy. If he decides the former, he can make the saving throw, and take a shot afterwards if he saves. The monster only has a couple of health points left…

Alex is stunned at the sight momentarily, and wavers for a second or two before acting - unsure whether to drop into cover or shoot, he does neither for a few seconds, stunned into inaction. Eventually, he does try to drop behind a pew, and get into a better shooting position where he might not be a target.
OOC:
My bad for not posting, so not going to take advantage of a lower Tn for the Athletics test. If I pass, I'll also try a shot.

Rolls

Alex pauses a heartbeat too long. Enveloped in the beam of sickly light, he is at once immobilised. He stands stiffly, enveloped in a green glowing film, too rigid even to topple against a pew.

The monster utters another alien noise of distress. It staggers further along the aisle, leaving a trail of blue-green ichor. Its beam weapon trembles in its loosening grip but it seems to be preparing to launch a second filthy ray.
OOC:

So basically new round. Trail doesn’t seem to ‘do’ shock mechanically, so we’ll keep on fighting and do a stability test at the end. (Survival instinct has kicked in and you’ll deal with the trauma later.)

Same options as before — the monster is leaking blood and only needs another shot to go down… Alex is immobilised.

Yes. In a halting, confused way— like Harrington, when you talked to him…

"No! Not! Don't! Unharm! Just...not move! No harm!"
May 13, 2025 6:59 pm
The creature’s device smashes as Emma’s bullet passes through it, causing it to detonate in a pulse of bright heat. The creature is incinerated, filling the old building with an alien stench!
OOC:

Now the horror of the situation catches up with the investigators…
Make a tn4 stability test, or lose 6 stability points (violence, horror, peril), 7 (temp paralysis) if you are Alex.

May 13, 2025 7:08 pm
Emma leans over, breathing heavily, pulse racing, as she tries to regain her composure.

She looks in shock at the thing dissolving, realizing her gun hand is shaking visibly...

Then she turns and looks at the terrible consequences on Alex.

Clancy lifts his head up just in time to see the alien's gun detonate and for his own to get disintegrated. What a terrible day to have eyes!

OOC:

It’s ok to go to low negatives with stability. We want at least one or two investigators to be shaken by the end of the adventure so it’s genre appropriate :)

If anybody can give Alex medical assistance (first aid tn4) he’ll be able to move about stiffly, using his investigative skills but not really shooting, jumping, etc. The weapon used on him is obviously not as powerful as that used against Harrington.

I’m going to treat the church as a whole ‘scene’ for the purposes of the next turn.
There is another horror to discover in the abandoned old church. Between the pews, the investigators find three human corpses. They have been grotesquely emptied of fluids. From their clothes, two appear to have been vagrants, but the third husk of a cadaver is dressed in the garb of a Misk U student. All bear the marks of terrible wounds. Sucker and puncture marks that reveal that the monster was a form of esoteric vampire, feeding on the fluids and organs of living prey!

Yet this revelation, which would sent the investigators reeling a day or so earlier, barely registers after the horror of their battle.

There are two further avenues of terror to explore. The bell tower above, from which the humming noise still emits. And the crypt, reachable by a chill stairway at the rear of the church.
OOC:

There are no clues here, only choices:

1. Climb the bell tower, which requires a tn4 athletics or stealth test, as the wooden steps are rotten. Alex, even if he has been helped with first aid, won’t be able to manage the climb.
2. Descend to the crypt. Easy enough, requiring only some unpleasant brushes with cobwebs and the icy cold of the crypt itself.
3 Finish up the investigation and go home. The mystery as to what was going on has not really been solved, but a dangerous vampiric alien has been destroyed.
4. Do something else.

May 14, 2025 9:07 pm
Melody rips her blouse sleeves into ribbons and tries to bandage as best as she can Alex 's wounds.
OOC:
I got the die wrong, should be +1=6

Rolls

FIRST aid +1 - (1d6)

(5) = 5

May 14, 2025 9:20 pm
OOC:

I didn’t really offer any suggestions as to how Alex might be ‘de-immobilised’ so how about this…
Somehow, Melodies bandages absorb the glow that films Alex’s skin. By stages, he is able to blink, move his fingers, then take a decent breath. Within a few minutes he is able walk, if rather stiffly. His voice is feeble and hoarse, though his confusion has abated…
May 14, 2025 9:47 pm
Emma turns toward Alex, concerned, only to sigh in relief when she sees Melody's quick thinking and deft hands at work. Emma looks once more upwards and says, "I do believe we must ascend... I'll go. Anyone else?" She reloads her revolver and heads toward the tower.
OOC:
Assuming no one stops her, I'll spend and roll...

Rolls

Stealth tn 4 spend 2 - (1d6+2)

(3) + 2 = 5

May 14, 2025 10:45 pm
Emma scales the creaking boards to the bell tower. Those behind her cannot follow too closely, lest the staircase collapse under the combined weight. So she is the first to reach the deck where the church’s bronze bells once pealed. To the east and south stretch the city’s nocturnal streets. To the north, she glimpses the old Miskatonic, reflecting Arkham’s lights.

But there is something else there. Something impossible…

Above, a dozen yards above her head, an object hovers weightlessly. Leaden grey and and shaped like a crooked bomb or torpedo, it turns slowly in the air high above the Main Street corner. Emma guesses that it is a starship, a vehicle that navigates the endless void of space. Docked weightlessly with the church’s steeple acting as a kind of anchor. But whereas the heaven ships she had seen in comics are sleek and modern, the object she now glimpses is ugly and misshapen. The only feature that breaks its lumpen form is a crude, heavy-looking porthole from which another of the vampire creatures peers through sunken eyes. It watches for a split second…

The ship’s engines detonate, casting it rapidly into the darkness of the sky. Deafened by their din and fearful that the steeple will collapse at it shakes from their impact, Emma watches as the crooked object rises and is quickly hidden in cloud.

…..

"We’ll done, you’ve done very well. Another brandy? I recommend it for settling the nerves…"

King looks at the four adventurers with concern. He is disappointed that Tillinghast left the group so quickly, but seems surprised and pleased that those remaining handled the perils successfully.

"So ghouls… but then an alien visitor of some sort. What do you think happened? I mean, what was the connection? And why could Harrington see the object, presumably, before he promised to make a photograph?"
May 15, 2025 7:46 am
Clancy shrugs. "It would be strange if it were more than coincidence. What would an alien visitor have in common with an undead ghoul? I don't think this is the kind of mystery we will be able to solve, to be honest. I'm just happy we have any sort of answer at all. Any word on Harrington's condition? He is the only one who will be able to answer how and what he saw."
