The Watchman Watches in Vain

OOC:

I’m going to keep moving. Drgwen has said that Emma is ‘holding back’ and we now know Melody and Clancy are next to Stuckey.

I’ll place Alex immediately behind the front row.

Emma watches the unlikely company advance into the inky darkness of the alley.

As they turn into the yard at the building’s rear, Stuckey’s flashlight flickers over a dreadful tableau. Three ghouls perch on a brick wall at the yard’s rear. Bald pated, yet shaggy and hoofed like goats. As Arkhamites, the investigations have heard tales of these creatures since their childhood. The sight of the three monsters feels like a impossible scene from a nightmare. Yet also oddly familiar.

Long tongues lolling, the creatures draw themselves up on their powerful haunches as if to leap at the intruders. They hiss a warning.

"They are right there," gasps Stuckey.

The flashlight trembles in his grasp, casting a quavering beam. He aims his pistol directly at the creatures , but refrains from shooting, clearly doubting the party’s odds of survival if they engage.
OOC:

The terrifying encounter requires a stability roll, tn4, losing 4 additional points if you fail. Emma won’t have seen the monsters so does t need to roll. @Lemming23 can decide whether he’s close enough to be involved.

Stuckey will back off unless the investigations suggest a different action. Whether the ghouls will allow a peaceful withdrawal is yet to be seen.

She gasps in horror, stopping in her tracks.

Edit: pushing, investing 2 stability points this time

(2) + 1 = 3

Stability +2 - (1d6+2)

(6) + 2 = 8

"It's not possible," Clancy breathes. Despite being a former athlete and in great shape, the strength drains out of Clancy as he sees something that could potentially tear him apart. "Back slowly away," he murmurs to Stuckey.

What's the hold-up?" asks Alex from the back lines, unable to see anything ahead because of the people in the way.
May 7, 2025 8:05 pm
OOC:

Fair enough, Alex is far enough back so as not to see the trio of frights. Emma is even further back in the lane. We are hitting the two day mark so I’ll puppet Emma and have her watch from the distance.

@Dr_B We don’t have the push mechanic in core Trail (unless it’s a 2e thing). So please just go with the first roll and take the 4 stability points hit.

The ghouls snarl when Melody refuses to back away. One of the creatures makes a guttural snarl. Then points a bony finger upwards , towards the spire of the old church.

The three horrors scramble from the wall and head westward into the darkness , scrambling yard to yard in the direction of the graveyard.

Stuckey gives an audible sigh.

"You stood your ground, lady? I don’t know whether that makes you brave or crazy. Mr Cowley? Professor? How about you come and join us in here? No medals for you, though."

Once the ghouls have departed, the yard presents a grisly scene. The ground is thick with wet autumn leaves. Yet a severed hand, gnarled and greenish like a cartoon witch’s , is clearly visible in Stuckey’s torchlight. Blood spatters the wall on which the ghouls were resting.

As they search the scene, the investigators also become aware of a low but persistent hum coming from the direction of the church.
OOC:

As usual, please suggest which investigative skills you could use and whether you are willing to spend any pool points.

A couple of meta points: I’m going to keep to a two-day rule, puppeting characters if necessary to get to the end of the adventure. Obv puppeting isn’t great, so let me know if it’s not really working out for you . I will understand as this is a ‘test’ game and might not have worked out as you expected. Also, this is the last scene where Stuckey will be present, in case you find his presence a bit railroading. He’s just a breadcrumb on the trail.

OOC:
probably not applicable in my case, but there is this pushing rule in core Trail 1e:
[ +- ] screengrab
either way, taking 4 SAN damage
Melody is quite shaken by the sight. "Wh-What were those... things??"

Clancy breathes a sigh of relief.

"Ok, now those were ghouls. No doubts about it. What a scoop! But I don't think many readers would believe me and I'd just tarnish my reputation."

Clancy is deep in thought for a moment and then shakes his head.

"Stuckey, what about this hand? Doesn't it look strange?" Clancy looks approaches the hand and then the blood splash, looking for a corpse or any information on what the ghouls were doing here.
OOC:
I could use Occult or Evidence Collection.

@Dr_B
Sorry, I think it was the terminology that threw me. IIRC Push means something else —something like a resource point you can spend— in some versions of Gumshoe. Maybe in the new version of ToC , too, which I haven’t seen. I agree that rerolls are probably not intended for stability rolls.

Is Melody going to investigate the scene? I’d prefer to get it into the same post cycle.

@nezzeraj Occult wouldn’t quite work here but EC definitely would. Are you willing to spend extra pool points (how many)?

OOC:
I have been reading along the whole time... I said I was staying back, you acknowledged it... I was waiting for the interaction of those who got up close to be resolved. No need to puppet me.

Once the others indicate that the ghouls had left, Emma tentatively moves forward and sees the grisly scene. Her curiosity gets the better of her, though, as it always does, and she begins to investigate. She examines the hand and its green glow.

Does the hand appear to have been severed by a surgical procedure or ritual knife, perhaps? Or does it look gnawed on, ripped, or some other messy violent act? And does the greenishness resemble the green said to have surrounded the plane, and which left a sickly green hue on our pilot?

Next, Emma turns to the Church, trying to identify the hum, and looking up at the steeple. Is there anything unusual here?
OOC:
Emma has Occult to examine the greenishness. She has Architecture to study the Steeple. She is willing to spend 1 point on each!

OOC:
I only have 1 point of EC left so I'm willing to spend it if we get a useful clue out of it.

OOC:
I reckon she got quite a shock, losing 40% of her sanity pool. If we are roleplaying this story in character, she needs a moment to recover. No Investigating from her after seeing her first monster in the flesh

PS: what's the rush, do you have to meet a deadline for the end of this adventure? Feeling we are a bit on Fast Forward 😁

I do like to keep a decent pace ☺️. But I'm basically just trying to get back to turn order. A GM post followed by all player posts . Just the way we did it when we started out, when it seemed to work ok (from my perspective, at least) ( I shouldn't have experimented/ broken the pattern in the last scene)

Hm, ok I’ll bear that in mind. I’ll spend the point only if gives a really good angle.

Alex also comes forward after the ranks move forward, and spies the green hand. After the others explain what they saw, he says "I wonder, do you think this was ghoul on ghoul action? One of their own ripped apart for committing some ghoulish social faux pas?"

He too gazes up at the spire that others are observing, to see if he spots anything out of the ordinary.
OOC:
Willing to spend my point of Physics if necessary

Stuckey sees that Melody has been struck with terror and disgust.

He approaches her gingerly and considers offering a her steadying swig from his hip flask. But he looks at the elegant woman and thinks better of it.

"I’m sorry, " he says. " I’d like to say it gets better but it doesn’t."

Ghoul against ghoul? Clancy doubts it. The hand is rubbery and inhuman. Even more so than a ghoul’s bony manus. Turning it over, he sees that horrid suckers pucker in its palm and near its fingertips. The hand of a devil? Or something more alien still?!

Emma also considers the severed hand. Her guess is that the member has been torn from its socket through sheer force. The spillage of dark green blood nearby confirms this. The hand is dull green, rather than brightly luminous like the light that enveloped Harrington.

Green like a toad…suddenly the horrible otherness of the thing strikes her…

Alex and Emma swap notes on the steeple. The old structure soars into the blackness of the autumnal New England sky. Emma knows much already about its structure and the lookout platform within. One odd thing that strikes her is the weather vane at its tip. Perhaps it is a trick of the light, but the distant vane seems to faintly tremble. As though viewed through a shimmer of heat or cold.

Alex also stares and slowly confirms Emma’s impression. Some kind of force—a magnetic field perhaps— is operating around or in front of the steeple’s tip!
OOC:
Clancy and Melody are still reeling from the shock of their close quarter encounter with the ghouls and so are inured to the lesser horror of the freaky hand. But Alex and Emma need to make a tn4 stability check or lose 2 stability points.

I’ll just take 1 physics pool point from Alex. All other point offers refunded.

Please discuss your thoughts in character or ooc and decide what to do next….every other day posting is fine rather than daily :)

Melody sees the detective's half-gesture, reaches out for his flask and snatches it from his hand, gulping down a swig or three!

Somewhat fortified by the cheap booze, she returns the flask and looks surprised at her companions, apparently made of sterner stuff and already investigating the gruesome scene.

"Er... you know how we said not to go near that graveyard at night? I think that was... a wise idea?"
OOC:
the shocked Melody would rather wait for the morning to investigate the dairy and the church itself, but the horror-loving player would press on tonight and get the full spooky experience! 😎 Any thoughts?
May 9, 2025 1:11 pm
Clancy looks at the hand and feels a bit queasy. "Does it look squid-like to anyone else? These suckers here," he points to the palm and fingertips. "They look like the suckers of a squid or octopus. Maybe from the river?"
OOC:
I'm good with either too! I think day time is safer, but night is more interesting lol.
May 9, 2025 1:20 pm
Alex comes closer, examining the hand. "I do believe you're right, they do look like suckers. But squid and octopuses don't have hands."
