How about using Streetwise to know bootlegger info? I'd be willing to spend 1 point.
OOC:

Sounds good. Anyone else? If you’re out of ideas, please just make a brief IC post that puts your character in the scene.

When they arrive at the docks, Emma feels immediately out of her element. They wanted to see if someone rescued a pilot from the river, so she thought to check the boathouses here. If they were locked, she'd try to climb up on the roof.

OOC:

So I hope EDIT @Lemming23 doesn't mind if keep going for reasons of pace. Perhaps Alex has stayed awhile with the antiquarian to check on his health. Or is spending time in his shop, looking over the curios....

I’ll take two points from Melody in Bargain —it will be worth it— and one from Clancy in Streetwise.
Professor though she may be, Emma clambers dexterously onto the roof of a boathouse. Through its filthy skylight, she sees a sleek, powerful-looking motorboat drawn up on a ramp. Leaning against the wall inside is a sign that reads ‘‘Lucky Carter Cartage Co.’ It has been taken down from the outside of the boathouse and (hidden?) within.

Clancy knows this name as the ‘front’ for Arkham’s biggest bootlegging operation. It is run by local mob boss Danny O’Bannion, operating out of the Lucky Carter Cartage Company garage. The rear entrance to the garage building is nearby, in plain sight of the investigators. Clancy has heard that O’Bannion is approachable by those (like Melody) with high society connections. As long as the subject of O’Bannion’s real business stays out of any conversation.

The hobos are reluctant to report anything they saw the previous evening. They seem fearful of repercussions by the bootleggers, who also seem to pay them to keep silent. But Melody’s hints of payment work like a charm on one grizzled fellow. He explains what happened.

The bootleggers saw the wreck of the plane drifting past in the river’s powerful current. Their motorboats were already in the water, getting ready for their night’s work. One of the boats drove out and hauled the pilot out of his plane. They brought him back to the boathouse where they called their bosses on a special ‘phone. O’Bannion himself appeared from the rear of the Lucky Carter garage. He ordered the pilot to be taken to St Mary’s hospital. Before he was taken away in an unmarked automobile, O’Bannion carefully removed the pilot’s goggles, headwear and pistol.
OOC:

Where next? The hospital to interview the pilot (if he's alive/conscious)? The Lucky Clover office to risk a talk with O'Bannion? Or head back to the graveyard as was discussed earlier?

Please discuss IC or OOC as before, and pose any final questions you might have to the local down-and-outs.
Apr 25, 2025 2:53 pm
OOC:
You got me confused with @Lemming23 I think lol. I will explain the information I know about the bootleggers.
"We could speak to O'Bannion, but if the pilot is alive I think we'll get more information from him. And I'd rather not get the attention of someone like that if I can help it."
Apr 25, 2025 9:36 pm
After carefully descending from the roof of the boathouse, Emma discusses the info with the others. She admits, "I do not feel comfortable speaking to a man like O'Bannion; I'll leave that to others if anyone would like to do that. If we have time before sunset, then we could by the hospital. But I would like to go to the graveyard before dark."
Apr 25, 2025 10:01 pm
After sharing the intelligence she learned from the hobos, Melody comments, "Hmm... Why do you think O'Bannion personally removed goggles and the other paraphernalia? Rather bizarre, dont you find, dears?"

"Anyway, I agree that we should go visit the poor darling at the hospital... What a ghastly experience! "
Apr 26, 2025 4:03 am
"I also wondered about removing those specific items. It could be they were worth money, or maybe something was strange about them. We should tuck that information away for later though, it won't do us much good accusing a known gangster of theft. As for where to, we can either split up and check out the hospital and cemetery, or we stick together and do one today and one tomorrow. I think the hospital is more important because we do not know Mr. Harrington's condition."
Apr 26, 2025 12:19 pm
As the investigators complete their discussion, a vagrant arrives from a filthy alley, muttering curses. He combines biblical phrases that condemn the rich and promise vengeance upon them.

The fellow picks up a chair leg and assaults, of all people, redwood Clancy. Although he does not seem to pose much of a threat in physical terms, the fellow seems deranged.
OOC:

Fight!

1. Roll a fighting skill tn3 (scuffling, weapons or --shooting?) on 1d6. As usual, add points from your skill pool if you wish.
2. If you make the tn3, roll 1d6 damage (subtract-2 if you you are using fisticuffs, see pg 12 condensed rules for weapon damage mods but usually +0 )

You don't need to post in any particular order, we'll sort out the order of actions later. In game, turn order is based on your fighting skill, so you should all normally go before the madman. But I'll say that his positioning allows him to go second, after Clancy, so: Clancy, madman, everyone else.

I'll roll for him now...

Rolls

Crazy Joe's weapon attack vs Clancy tn4 [3 pool points] - (1d6+3)

(6) + 3 = 9

damage if hit - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Clancy is taken by surprise and raises his hands to defend himself.
OOC:
Yikes, with a 9 I don't think any spend is worth it since I am unlikely to hit that number lol.

Rolls

Scuffling - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Damage - (1d6-2)

(6) - 2 = 4

It isn’t a contested roll so you still only have to make tn3. So far, you’ve taken a lump out of him for 4 health points, he’s taken 4 health points off you. Hopefully the other characters can take him out by the end of the round (he’s only got 1 more health point left after Clancy’s big whack.)
Apr 26, 2025 10:12 pm
Recovering from the shock of the sudden attack, and angered by the rude interruption, Melody steps forward. "Oh! you absolute, dreadful brute! Why are you assaulting Clancy!?! Take THAT!!"

She tries to place a riding boot kick to the hobo's private parts - that always won her a fight, when she and her brother Jasper came to blows.
OOC:
unskilled, going with a straight d6'

edit: oh well, she tried

Emma yelps in surprise as a deranged man attacks Clancy! Immediately, she reaches into her purse and grabs her revolver and backs away from the man. Should he come after her, she would shoot!

Good to know— looks like Alex is still at the antique dealer’s shop for now.

New Round.
I’ll roll the vagrants attack, but it wont land if Clancy takes him out first…(he misses)

Clancy is a bit dazed by the hit with the chair leg but emboldened by his own strike. The hobo seems likewise stunned so Clancy seems to end it quickly with a right hook.

The crazed fellow stumbles back, clutching at his bruised temple.

"The wicked have drawn their swords, cutting down the poor and needy... "

He staggers back into his alley, calling on prophesy to execute justice.
OOC:

The crazed attack is unsettling. All present please make a stability test, rolling tn4 on 1d6, adding pool points if you wish. Take a loss of 2 stability points if you fail.
Meanwhile, just a block away, Alex is tending to Tillinghast in a room behind his antique shop. The wretched fellow is slumped in his office chair, trembling.

"That passage that Professor Warren [=Emma] found in the farmhouse. I did not know that copies of that damnable book were extant. Well, I tell you it's true that certain families are linked to the...creatures... in the Old Graveyard. My family, too. We are from this old part of the city, this wretched, decaying old merchant district. I fear... I fear that myself or my brother...I don't want to become one of them!"
OOC:

Tillinghast's ravings are unsettling. When you are back, @Lemming23 , please make a stability test for Alex, rolling tn4 on 1d6, adding pool points if you wish. Take a loss of 2 stability points if you fail.

If you wish to you can carry out some action to help/ease Tillinghast before you rejoin the party at the hospital.

St Mary's is only a few blocks further south of the river, next to the University campus. It is staffed by Misk U teachers and student doctors. Patients take their chances as to whether they will be treated by a venerable surgeon or a Ragtime- or ‘Jazz’-crazed medical student.
OOC:

The building is actually visible at the bottom left edge of our clicky map, just under the sports building with big 'MU' letters). Corner of S West Street and College St.
The desk nurse has no record of a patient named Harrington, or even heard of a recently rescued pilot. But a passing student doctor suggests they may be asking after "the crazy egg" who was dropped off anonymously the previous evening.

"He's a pilot!" the nurse is surprised. "We thought he was some kind of motorcyclist. Harrington, you say, from Arkham Airfield? At least now we can contact his next of kin.""
OOC:

I'll fast forward through this bit for PbP purposes... Using investigative skills like credit rating, reassurance, etc. the investigators gain access to the patient, supervised by the student doctor ..
Harrington has been isolated in a small ward on the top floor of the hospital. He is pale, greenish and seems barely able to move. He responds to the visitors’ questions in a hoarse whisper. His responses generally peter out, or do not seem to be relevant to the questions posed.

During the conversation, Harrington raises a shaking hand , attempting but failing to point out of the hospital window.

A medical chart hangs on the end of his bed. The student doctor does not seem to mind if the investigators look at the extensive notes scribbled over the chart.
OOC:

While still worthwhile, attempts to use interpersonal investigative skills will be limited by H’s ability to understand and communicate.

Other avenues of investigation may prove equally or more useful.

Please indicate as usual which skills you wish to use, and how much spend (if any) you are offering to get bonus info. As before, I’ll gather all the suggestions before making a GM response.
