Looking to Start a Classic Traveller game

Howdy game-folk. playbydave here, long time DM/GM who is moving my current Classic Traveller sci-fi game from the Tavern-Keeper forum to here. I liked Tavern-Keeper a bunch, but that site is shutting down soon. Thus the move. I'll have room for 2 or 3 additional players once I get the game up and running.

I've been playing and GMing since 1975, at first DnD but then Traveller when it first came out. I have experience with a bunch of other game systems, too. I'm very excited to be playing Free League's DRAGONBANE in a face-to-face game now; its a system that's got me really excited and interested in fantasy genre games. I've been mostly Sci-Fi and Military themed games for the past dozen years or more.

Favorite games from the past include Gamma World, Paranoia, Twilight:2000, Earthdawn, Deadlands (original), 7th Sea (original), Toon!, and Tales From the Floating Vagabond.

This site looks really promising but I expect there to be a bit of a learning curve. Any thoughtful advice is welcome.

There is definitely a learning curve here on Gamersplane, but the community is very supportive and several guide threads are available. One of the mods will shortly paste a bunch of useful links for you.

Love comedic/zany RPGs, especially more obscure ones from the past: Teenagers from Outer Space, TABLOID!, It Came From the Late Late Late Show, Pandemonium...)

Toon, published by Steve Jackson Games, was one of the first RPGs I GMed, a few decades ago.

I had completely forgotten about it, thanks for bringing back good memories! =)

So far I'm pretty boggled by Gamers Plane. Much less user friendly than my previous game/play-by-post site. But it was recommended highly and its quite possible that "user error" is the main problem.

The dice interface and some of the other things here are less elegant than T-K, but the player community and discoverability are better here. Anything you're struggling with you'll find someone to help you with quickly.

Quick note -- once you get used to the dice roller here, you might like it better. I do. For one thing, you can edit a post and add additional rolls with no fear of overwriting the original roll.

Thanks everyone. I'm starting to get the hang of it. The only thing I really miss from Tavern_Keeper is the wiki, but it looks like you can use pinned threads to serve as requesitories of the most important background information.

I've got the dice roller down; simpler than Tavern_Keeper. Easy to use.

Aye, just creating additional threads works pretty well for that kind of thing. There are a bunch of advanced features (ability to quick-post as multiple NPCs in the same post, custom character sheet, dice roller rules / customizations, etc.), but yeah, focus on the basics. It took me a minute as well when I first started heavily using the site, but it doesn't take long for most of it to start clicking.
