Chapter 2: City of Trade

Apr 21, 2025 12:37 pm
Sprawling across a valley of blazing-hot sand, is one of the most incredible and wondrous cities in all of Golarion: the great desert metropolis of Katapesh, the City of Trade. Katapesh is a city of organized chaos where cash is king and commerce is the highest god.

Katapesh overlooks a vast ocean from a sandy promontory above a series of black, glass-like cliffs. Beneath the cliffs, a flat stretch of ground extends to the sea. Katapesh is surrounded by 40-foot-high sandstone walls, topped by ramparts and interspersed with crenelated towers.

As you travel towards the lower entrance to the city, you pass through the Sprawl. The Sprawl is mainly a residential area where laborers have settled outside the city walls. Fishermen, carpenters, masons, chandlers, brick layers, and thatchers make up the majority of the populace here.

The gnomes speak to the armed and armored guards at the gates, warriors who wear colorful tabards and veils over the lower parts of their faces. After a bit, the guards open the gate and allow you access to the city proper.

Once inside, the gnome caravan leader turns to you. "This is where we depart, friends. We are grateful for your assistance. We wish you luck on your next steps!"

Eugene was a bit awestruck, he'd been in large cities before back home, but somehow this felt so much more alive. There were the colors, the sounds, the smells, it was all so organic. Even the walls of the city, born of the sand that surrounded it, it just felt authentic. Which was weird, because if this was all a hallucination, where was he drawing this inspiration from? Movies? Games? Comics? This was so much grander than his boring life as an engineer back home. Maybe that's what caused the break in the first place, a yearning for adventure, but as great as this was he could also feel the pang of home sickness in his belly. He yearned for a hug from his wife and kids, he wanted to hear their voices. How long has it been? Too long...that was for sure.

"We should hurry and find those in charge, I am sure it will be some task to get an audience."
Apr 22, 2025 7:25 am
"This place...wow, it's something else," Mathias says, taking in the splendor of the city.

"You're right, Eugene. But where do we start? This place is huge."
Apr 22, 2025 9:26 am
Rone shaded his eyes as he surveyed the enormous city from the distance. He had read many historical documents about cities in desert areas back in his own world, where he came from. It reminded him of them but still fascinated him. He silently watched all the buildings, and as they moved through the sprawl, he was acutely reminded of the more congested, economically weaker part of the cityfolk who used to live in close proximity trying to make both ends meet. Although this place felt better than those, he continued to silently observe the buildings with a somber expression. His thoughts were driven back as Eugene spoke out, and he nodded, "Yes, this place is big. We need to find someone to ask around. Maybe the guards can give us directions?"
Apr 22, 2025 10:13 pm
After saying goodbye to the caravan leader and asking them for suggestions for decent yet affordable lodgings, Michel takes in the city.

He's been in bigger cities, but not louder ones. Well, maybe the student quarter in Ghent...
Looking around, it gives him Middle-Eastern Middle-Earth vibes. Looking around he sees Dwarves, Hobbits, couple of Elves, even the occasional Orc and Goblin... It's amazing.

He's also very glad to see the ocean. He was starting to fear this was one of those one-biome worlds like Tatooine. he's still not sure if any of this is real, but he's coming around to "it's real enough that it doesn't really matter".

Gloria is not around. She's not a fan of the mid day heat, or crowds for that matter.
Apr 25, 2025 12:10 pm
Asking the guards about getting an audience with the Pactmasters elicits laughs. "Nobody sees the Pactmasters! Not nobody, not no how!" one quips.

After a bit, they explain that the Pactmasters rarely involve themselves in the day-to-day operations of the city. That is handled by their human liaison, who is known as the Pactbroker. Even getting an audience with him will prove difficult, but perhaps if you were to perform some task to benefit him, he may be willing to make time for you. They suggest speaking with some of the clerks at the Pactbroker's office to find out if there's something you might be able to do.
Apr 25, 2025 2:48 pm
Rone nodded and spoke to his companions, "Maybe we should ask for some quests from these Pactbrokers. Then if we get to do something, we can complete it and gain their favor, which will ultimately help us get an audience with the Pactmasters."
Apr 25, 2025 5:51 pm
"It seems to be the way this whole...thing...works..." the word thing was accompanied by a flurry of hands going in each direction, indicating the whole of this world they had been thrust into, "...and if I am ever going to get home it would seem I must play along"
Apr 26, 2025 6:03 am
Mathias chuckles, "Rone, you make it sounds like some sort of video game." He shakes his head, "I guess...if we think of it as such, maybe things will make a little more sense."

He looks to Eugene, "Right, playing along it is. New world, new rules, right? Or, when in Rome...I guess we need to find this Pactbroker's office. Let's ask around and get directions."

He asks the guards for directions, hoping they'll be able to point them in the right direction, or otherwise begins to ask around.

"If the only jobs they have are ones where we have to go kill some monsters then we are officially in a video game..." Michel Snarks.

"Anyway, do we even need these Pact Masters? It's a big city, there's bound to be some scholars or a wizard's guild or whatever who can help us out. On the way here I wasn't exactly thinking we would should go and ask the local rulers."
Apr 30, 2025 12:34 pm
You spend a few hours asking around the Twilight Gate district about the Pactbroker. You learn his name is Hashim ibn Sayyid. Ibn Sayyid has a reputation for upholding the Pactmasters’ judgments and enacting their laws, whatever his personal feelings. Some suspect ibn Sayyid has a personal agenda that will someday come to light, but for now he enjoys a stable and respected position.

From his readings, Eugene remembers that here in Twilight Gate is the local headquarters of a world-spanning organization of explorers called the Pathfinder Society. The Pathfinders are well-traveled and well-learned in many subjects, including magical knowledge. If you are unable to secure an audience with the Pactmasters, they might be a good alternate source of information about what has happened to you.

"We should check in with a group called the Pathfinders Society as well, I read about them in one of the books I picked up in the last city. They might have some information about the Pact Broker, or about how we undo our situation" Eugene shifted uncomfortably, his heart aching once more for home.
Apr 30, 2025 7:03 pm
Rone nodded at Eugene, "Hmm, this Hashim ibn Sayyid doesn't feel safe to deal with. Let's try the Pathfinder society first; we can then approach Sayyid."
May 1, 2025 5:23 am
"I agree, seems like a prudent idea. A well-travelled and broad organization like that might even have a greater chance of knowing what happened to us."
May 1, 2025 6:54 pm
"I agree... These 'Pathfinders' seem like a much better prospect than just go work for the local rulers that we know nothing about. And am I the only one that finds the term 'pact master' to sound at least slightly sinister?"
May 2, 2025 12:24 pm
This section of the city is a mixture of ancient and modern architecture and the site of many ruins, several of which seem to be tourist attractions, based on the number of people wandering about and marveling at their construction. Nestled among cyclopean ruins and other ancient marvels is an elegant three-tiered building that serves as the Pathfinder Society lodge in Katapesh.

Two hulking constructs stand guard outside of the gates. These looming humanoid figures are made of rune-etched metal and polished stone, with crystalline eyes that glow with blue light. They glare down at you, but perhaps sensing that you do not pose a threat, they let you inside the lodge. Inside is a small lobby area, a pleasant dusky-skinned man stands behind a desk. "Greetings, travelers. Are you fellow Society members?" he inquires.
May 2, 2025 2:00 pm
The question caught him off guard, who were they in this world, was it possible one of them was a member? Was this body just created when he joined the hallucination, or was teleported here, or does it have a backstory?

"I am Eugene Aldrich, and if I am being honest I am unsure of my status with the Society. We have just arrived in Katapesh and are seeking assistance with a peculiar issue that we as a collective group have. Do you have a way of confirming?"
May 2, 2025 6:34 pm
Rone looked around the lobby and smiled at the receptionist, "My friend is absolutely right here, and it might be something related to magic. Do you have any resident arcane specialists or someone knowledgeable regarding magic?"
May 3, 2025 1:39 am
Mathias shrugs, "We're looking for help, is all."
May 5, 2025 9:23 am
Gloria startles the group by reappearing as they near the Society building, jumping in between them from a rooftop.
"Had fun exploring?" Michel asks as he scratches her behind the ears after he recovers.

He spends a few moments admiring the Society's magical bouncers. "These guys don't mess around, do they?"

After introducing himself and Gloria to the receptionist, he explains, "See, we're not from this world, or dimension, or plane or whatever, we got transported here against our will. And that sort of thing doesn't even exist where we come from. And to make things more complicated, we all seem to have some vestigial that don't seem to belong to us."
May 5, 2025 12:51 pm
"Another world, is it?" the clerk asks with a raised eyebrow. "Well, that's certainly an intriguing story. Wait here a moment."

The man ducks into the building proper. After several minutes, he returns with a beckoning gesture. "The Venture-Captain wishes to speak with you. Follow me, please."

Inside the lodge, you can see a dozen or so people dressed like adventurers. Some are relaxing with drinks in hand, others are poring over maps and tomes in a large library. The clerk leads you into an office adorned with numerous art objects and curios. Behind the desk is a woman with gently pointed ears like Michel's. She greets you and bids you to have a seat in one of several chairs arranged before her desk.

"I am Venture-Captain Aurora Steelbloom," she says. "My clerk tells me you claim to have been brought here from another world? I'll admit that you've piqued my curiosity. Please, tell me more."
May 6, 2025 7:19 am
"Uh, Greetings, Venture-Captain. I'm Mathias. I guess, to start, we don't have much of an idea where we are. We know only what we've been told about this city over the last few days, and seeing it now, but these lands are nothing like where we came from, at all. Everything is different. I'm confident this world, Golarion I believe I heard it called, is not the same world we came from...I just don't know what that means exactly. Have you heard of anything like this happening before?"
May 6, 2025 11:03 am
Aurora nods. "Yes, actually. This isn't the first time something like this has happened," she says. "The Pathfinder Chronicles contain a few tales of visitors who have come to Golarion from other places, be they different planets or even completely different planes of existence. It's rare, but not unheard of. Can you tell me more about your world of origin?"
May 6, 2025 1:59 pm
Rone raised his eyebrows at what he heard from the Venture-Captain, "Well, our world from where we have come is similar regarding the geography and weather but vastly different in other cases. This might be difficult to explain, but the state of things like normal instruments and technology that we have seen uptill now is something that was present in our world quite sometime back. Technology wise, our world is much more advanced, it seems, but we haven't seen the entirety of Golarion. However, other differences exist like in our world only humans are present. We can see many sentient species here. Also, one complete difference that separates our world from Golarion is the absolute absence of magic. We don't have magic back in our world. I mean, we fantasize about it, but there is no one who can cast magic."

Eugene nods as Rone and Matthias feed the Venture-Captain the information they seek. "So do your Chronicles ever mention how those who came to your world returned to theirs?"
May 7, 2025 8:57 am
Michel fills in some information the others have glossed over.
"We didn't know each other before. We were all from very different parts of our world. We all have been changed too. Rone mentioned our world only has human ancestries, and we're no different. This is my face, more or less, but this is not my body... Hang on, I think I can show you..."

He digs into his backpack and takes out his phone. "It takes a minute or so to start up... these devices are common enough on our world that most people have at least one. They're used for communication with similar devices and storing information... Here, got it."
He hands the captain his phone, showing a picture of a much frailer looking, human version of himself with a much smaller version of Gloria in his lap.
May 8, 2025 10:49 am
Aurora's eyebrows lift when she sees Michel's phone. "Fascinating. This looks like one of the technological wonders that have been unearthed in Numeria." Seeing your blank expressions, she elaborates. "Numeria is a land far to the north and east of here. Millenia ago, what we believe was a starfaring craft from another distant planet crashed into the wastes there. Ever since then, the natives and explorers have uncovered items and beings with far greater technology than anything we have yet to develop on Golarion."

She looks to Eugene. "Most visitors who come here via their own power also possess the means to return to their worlds and planes of origin. But your situation seems to be different than that. Something else brought you here. I think by first determining what that was and the purpose of your arrival here may be the first steps in figuring out how to get you back to your homes. It sounds like an adventure-in-the-making worthy of the Chronicles!"
May 8, 2025 12:24 pm
Rone's eyes lit up at the mention of Numeria's starfaring craft, "Did you say starfaring craft? That seems more advanced than our current technology. The most we achieved was to send probes to our neighboring planet and our moon. We achieved only one moon landing but never became starfaring." He paused but then continued, "Also, something of note: when we arrived here, we were standing in front of an archway with glowing runes. Also, there was a granite obelisk in front of that structure."
May 10, 2025 5:34 am
Mathias runs his hand through his hair. "Still, the fact others have come here before, from other far-off places, is somewhat promising, if you're saying many of them were able to get home." He sighs, "Any leads we can find would be good. Until then, I'm afraid we don't have much knowledge of this city...or your world. Is there anything we can do to be of service to your organization, in exchange for any further assistance you can provide? I'm afraid we don't have much of a clue where to look to figure out what brought us here."
May 10, 2025 2:49 pm
"Aurora..." Eugene's tone changes to something more solemn as his piercing blue eyes stared intensely into hers, "...I have a family, and assuming this is happening in parallel time wise, and is not in fact a hallucination, I have been missing for several days. I need to get back to them. Any help you can provide, I would be greatly appreciative of." he looked down at the ground as the weight of his current predicament overtook all the emotional walls he had, tears began to well at the corner of his eyes as he thought of his wife and children, "I will do anything to get back to them..."
May 14, 2025 12:27 pm
"An archway an obelisk? Intriguing," Aurora says. "If you can tell me where it is, I'll send a team of agents to investigate it further. Maybe we can learn some clues as to its origin and purpose. And as a means of repayment, I do believe we have some tasks around the city that you can help us with."

She sifts through some papers on her desk, eventually pulling forth a piece of parchment emblazoned with the emblem of a golden set of scales. "Ah, here we are. This is a promissory note from the bank of Abadar. There's a merchant in the Nighstalls by the name of Palhuna Murqual. He's recently acquired a collection that the Pathfinder Society is interested in purchasing: the Monadistic Archive, a collection of scrolls from the Jistkan Imperium. The note should cover his asking price, but Murqual is crafty and may bargain for more. I can’t pay more gold than I already have offered, but if you can find other means of appeasing Murqual, I encourage you to do so. Do you have any questions?"
May 15, 2025 5:37 am
Mathias shakes his head, reaching and taking the promissory note and tucking it away safely. "I don't think so. Meet with the merchant, and obtain these scrolls for you, the Monadistic Archive. We'll see it done. Thank you."
May 15, 2025 8:07 am
Rone nodded to Aurora, "Sure. Let's find this merchant and get the scroll. But before the transaction, we need to know more about him." He then turned to Eugene and rested his hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry, we will return, and you will get back to your family again."
May 15, 2025 11:12 am
Michel makes a mental note of visiting this 'Numeria' is he gets the opportunity.
"The obelisk is just on the edge of Finderplain, not even a mile from the town." Michel replies to the venture-captain's question.

He stays silent, lost in thought and conflicted. He sympathises with Eugene's plight, but the longer he's been here, the more he feels like not going back at all.

But whatever he decides, he'll stick with the others and at least help them get back.
May 21, 2025 12:31 pm
"Palhuna Murqual is known as one of the preeminent vendors of local antiquities, both magical and mundane. He's had some recent legal troubles lately, though, and rumor is he's looking for agents to get a few things done. You may be able to leverage that to your advantage."
Finding Murqual’s shop is easy enough. A few inquiries lead you to the Lower City of Katapesh, the largest and most densely populated section of the city. The Lower City contains the city’s sprawling docks and possibly the world’s largest bazaar—a collection of kiosks, tents, huts, carts, or simply rugs on open spaces of ground displaying a few odds and ends. The Lower City Bazaar stretches the entire length of the city, and nearly anything can be bought or sold there.

His establishment defies the stereotype for a shop in the infamous Nightstalls. It boasts a permanent location, instead of one that could be broken down and moved with ease. It is quite lavishly appointed, rather than being a shadowy, smoky hovel, and the air smells of vanilla and cardamom rather than incense. Inside, deep carpeting covers the floor. All sorts of curios and knickknacks adorn the shelves around the shop. A slim young man stands behind the counter, holding a ledger.

He gives you a slight bow as you enter. "Welcome. I am Palhuna Murqual. Have you come for business, or would you just like to browse?"
May 21, 2025 1:46 pm
Rone smiled amicably and bowed, "Greetings, I am Rone Kanterine, a traveler and a visitor to the esteemed city of Katapesh. Master Murqual is it? Your establishment seems very sophisticated, and I would love to do business, but before that, can you show me your best wares?"
May 27, 2025 7:51 am
"Greetings, Master Murqual," Mathias says, lending his voice to Rone's. "I will browse as well, for the sake of curiosity, but we do have a matter of business to discuss after."
May 27, 2025 11:48 am
Murqual happily shows you some of his wares, including an elaborate clockwork owl, a glass orb that appears to have a miniature electric storm trapped within it, and a gleaming scimitar with a blade seemingly made of solid gold. All of the items, unfortunately, cost much more than you can afford at this point in time.

"Now, what is this business you have come to speak of?" Murqual asks curiously once the tour is complete.
May 29, 2025 11:50 pm
"We've come to purchase a particular item in your collection. The Monadistic Archive," Mathias says.
May 30, 2025 10:47 am
"Ah, so you here on the behalf of the Pathfinder Society," Murqual says with a knowing nod. "I assume they sent you with an offer?"

When shown the promissory note, the merchant nods appreciatively. "Not bad. But I have already received another offer for the item well exceeding this one. While I respect the Pathfinder Society, to sell to you would seem favoritism. And I’m not inclined to favor one customer over another—without there being an equal favor, in return..."
May 31, 2025 12:59 pm
"We thought that could be the case. Perhaps a favor could be added to sweeten the pot, so to speak," Mathias says with a careful smile. "What kind of favor might you need?"
May 31, 2025 2:32 pm
Eugene stood idly by listening as they spoke of favors. He did peer at a few things that were out for sale here, he couldn't help but wonder if they would find their way home at the end of a long journey, or perhaps there would be one item, one key to their return. Maybe it lay here in this market, waiting to be found.
Jun 2, 2025 10:32 am
Murqual hesitates a moment before replying. "I have two tasks for you, actually. First, I have some special goods being delivered by problematic dealers. They are kholos. I've had dealings with this tribe before. They tend to ‘forget’ the agreed upon price. You’ll be carrying some additional funds—I regard it as a standard tax when dealing with them—but beyond that, I expect you to convince them that they’re not getting any extra.

"Second, a recent acquisition of mine has some unpleasant protective magic that I need dealt with. It is a mask that allows its wearer to frighten those who would threaten them. Unfortunately, it has a minor fiend bound to it as a guardian. I would have you eradicate the fiend. Somewhere away from the shop, of course. Maybe not on the streets, either—we don’t want any passerby victims. There’s a flat-roofed warehouse nearby. It should suffice.

"Complete both tasks, and I will sell you the Archive."
Jun 2, 2025 12:23 pm
Rone eyed Murqual trying to find hidden truths or clever ploys kept under a veil as he gave these tasks to them. "Well, these tasks seem like something we could definitely manage. The Kholos seem to be problematic to deal with, but we can definitely try our hand at convincing them. We can also try to take care of the fiend, but we don't know how strong it will be. However, the second task seems a bit more vague, and we might need to understand what sort of fiend we are dealing with. So, I request you to maybe provide some more details or incentives here."

"I'm not entirely sure what kind of fiend it is, but it has the stink of Abaddon about it. Given the origins of the mask, I believe it’s a creature called a div. They are weak to holy weapons and those made of cold iron. As it so happens, I do have a cold iron rapier here in my shop. I'll let you use it, and if you defeat the fiend, the blade is yours to keep, as well."
Jun 6, 2025 6:28 pm
"That is generous of you, Master Murqual," Mathias say. "We'll see the fiend slain and take care of the kholos as well, then return for the Archive." He looks to the others, "Won't do me any good, but any of you think you can use a cool new sword?"
Jun 7, 2025 4:23 pm
Rone nodded, "That's something which will even the odds. I can use it in the fight. I say we proceed with the quest."
Jun 7, 2025 10:17 pm
"Well, let's deal with these kholos first, as they're waiting for delivery. Master Murqual, what goods are we to bring to them? And where can we find them?"
Jun 9, 2025 10:42 am
Murqual sets you up with a small donkey-pulled cart before you depart his shop. Most of its contents consist of trade goods, bolts of cloth, and several casks of liquor. In addition, he gives you two sacks containing 100 gp each as additional "payment" if the kholos prove recalcitrant.

By night, the streets of the Twilight Gate district are mostly empty. The courtyard surrounding the Ruined Monastery, a popular tourist attraction by day, is even more deserted than the surrounding streets. Shadows lie thick underneath these crumbling walls.

A pair of the hyena-headed kholos wait for you in the plaza. Behind them in the gloom is a small crate. They snarl at you in disdain before one of them, a larger female, steps forward. "You are not the normal humans that Murqual usually sends. Who are you?"
Jun 10, 2025 12:49 am
As they travel, Mathias ensures his stony armor is summoned in preparation of a potential fight. "Hired hands, is all. Trusted by Murqual to seal this deal you have with him," Mathias says. "We've brought the goods. I assume you have as well?"
Jun 10, 2025 6:59 am
Rone flashed a smile and said, "Murqual is busy. He is dealing with more and more willy customers these days. A man of good business has a demand in this city, no? He sends his regards and wants the goods as was agreed upon. We are the new recruits, and he sent us instead of the others who are busy dealing elsewhere. We have money, you have goods?"

The kholos grumble and complain as they inspect what you've brought. ("These linens are mothridden." "There’s only one donkey?" "Do they expect the tribe to starve?") Eventually, the female turns to you again. "This stuff is not worth the cost of what Murqual wants. We are going to need more compensation."

Eugene stood idly by, assessing the situation, ready in case things went south, but he knew he was no talker, in his real life, or this hallucination or whatever it was. The others seemed more comfortable interacting face to face though, a good balance to his more intellectual endeavors.
Jun 11, 2025 10:43 am
Rone's persuasive words seem to pierce the kholos' bluster. The female snorts. "Fine. It is begrudgingly, but we will accept the trade." They hand over the crates of goods they have procured for Murqual. Once they have their payment, the pair swiftly departs.
Jun 12, 2025 10:21 am
Once the Kholos are gone, Mathias grins at the others. "Well, that could have gone far worse, I think. We even managed not to spend the extra gold Murqual gave us to grease the wheels. That was some smooth talking, Rone."
Jun 12, 2025 12:11 pm
Rone watched as the Kholos returned and then turned to Mathias, "For a few seconds I was worried, but they seem to understand me. I guess it worked out for the best, after all."
Jun 13, 2025 3:05 am
"Well...no time like the present to take care of the our other task, right? Let's make our way to that rooftop that was mentioned."
Jun 13, 2025 10:37 am
Murqual’s directions lead to a rickety iron ladder in an alleyway that climbs the side of a long, low warehouse. The roof is canted at a slight enough angle that it might as well be flat. Several other rooftops are adjacent, at more or less equal height, forming an L-shaped superstructure.

The mask itself is made from crimson-and-white lacquer, and Murqual has given you its command word: "chalifan." Speaking the command word causes it to exhale a white-and-red cloud of smoke. A trio of foggy shapes spiral out of the growing cloud, hovering in the air around you. Each shape resolves itself into a creature that resembles a disembodied and bestial head covered in lashing hair and curling horns! The things snarl as they prepare to attack.

OOC:
The cold iron rapier, and yes. The creatures have a weakness of 3 to cold iron, which means they take 3 extra damage every time they would take damage from a cold iron source. You can just roll your damage normally and I’ll apply the extra damage to them.
