This looks better scripted all round. I like things with intellectual heft, action, thrills, nudity, golf and wrestling. Oh oops! I went a bit crazy there

We 100-ish recent Tavern Keeper ex-pats ought to make a tavern here . . . .

Welcome, fellow tavernite!

I started on tavern keeper as well. Welcome.
Gamersplane can do a lot more with power and character sheets and supports on the fly battle maps (Google otfbm.io)

Main complaint compared to Tavern keeper is TK was nicely organized with sections for wikis and forums and gameplay while here you have to build that structure yourself and all threads are ultimately the same type

Welcome to gamersplane.com fellow Tavernkeeper. I moved over a couple years ago. Looks like you already dove right into several games. Have fun :)

Welcome to the GP community, lazycat1984!

It'll take a minute, but yeah, great features, games, and community here. I just want the flip-tile OOC posts!

Hey! We are from 'Making The Rounds' on Tavern Keeper and have established a Test Account on here to compare its features with those we are used to on the Tavern Keeper site. How is everyone else finding it so far?

I'll take a look at lazycat1984! links and see how things work on here.
I've got four years worth of game files to try and rescue first.

Such a great feature! Still waiting for another site to do that

Yes! We used the OOC comments a lot in our game, if that's what you mean by flip-tile-OOC. Most player posts had at least one OOC comment linked to them.

a. GM instructions on tests to be made.
b. Questions from the player about their character options.
c. Clarification of lore or rules relatedto the post.
d. General comments from the GMand other players on the post content e.g. 'Nice Roll', 'Great Post' or 'Bad Luck' etc. Vital for building social bonds.

Some posts would have a huge stack of OOC comments linked to them.

The only two things in TK that I miss are the wiki functionality and the game search/filter/organization. The community here is great. A bunch of old timers, and we get waves of newcomers. D&D fantasy seems to be this most common but there are a variety of other systems and genre as well as the occasional DM only game/discussion.

For me, GP's Discord integration was a revolution.
OOC:
Pixellating the names as it's easier than asking permission.
[ +- ] Questions from the player about their character options & GM instructions
[ +- ] Clarification of lore or rules related to the post
[ +- ] Discussing tactics
[ +- ] General comments from the GMand other players on the post content
...and as for the social stuff? We spend as much time nattering about nonsense like food, travel, jobs, and what-have-you as the game.

But the Discord integration adds snippets from the game's posts to the game's discord, and it's the posts which are the heartbeat of the social interaction.

I'll hold my hands up - I thought GP's Discord integration was a bloody stupid idea when it was first proposed. I was very wrong. In an active game with engaged players, all that discord natter and banter is like being at a table. Now we just need to work out virtual snacks.

Woah. Did TK shut down or something?
Apr 29, 2025 3:28 pm
It's been dying a slow death for years in my opinion. I was on it, several years ago now, but left after it became hard to find games to join. Might have just been had timing but I had seen several players move on before me.

They just announced the imminent shutdown... I think in a week or two...
Bill, the Minion from TK says:
Sooo ... It's been a bit of a year for me, while I've not used TavernKeeper at all in the past 8 years, I've kept it going for as long as I could. The monthly bill crept up past $300, while the Patreon support has kept steady around $100. I'm forever thankful to those supporters, because without them this conversation would have likely happened years ago.

I'm hoping to wind things down end of April / beginning of May. I realize that this isn't a lot of time, but I'm hoping the 100ish dedicated users we've still got will catch this early enough.

While I've played play-by-post since I've stopped using TavernKeeper, my weekly group has switch to using Discord and I've supplemented with a world building wiki that's powered by Jekyll + TinaCMS, that produces static HTML (and thus is cheap to host). If you're interested in following this path - the template I've built is available on GitHub. While I know it's not quite the same, the ability to stand up a discord server for a campaign, and if you're a nitro member change your profile for that server, feels like it could be a good enough replacement.

Once again, I'm sorry that I couldn't just keep it going; and I wish you all the best in finding something that works for you. Hopefully it will end up working better in the long run.

Welcome lazycat1984, and other TKers. Hope you find enough good stuff here to replace at least parts of what you loved about your last home!

Still have a few TK games I should archive.

This many, actually... wheeze.

As Adam demonstrates, there are tons of ways to do OOC comments here.
OOC:
Using OOC tags like this.
[ +- ] In Spoiler Tags
In threads that are just all OOC (like on TK).

And even with pretty powerful private messages, in the post.

Also note the dice roller here is *strong* -- you can same post, add a new roll, and it won't overwrite the old value. So you can post with just the roll, then edit and narrate the results of the roll, which might be to add a damage roll.

Once you learn the ropes -- it's a hugely functional and feature-rich PbP environment.

Welcome, TKers. I dearly loved Taven Keeper and I'm sad it's going away, but Gamers Plane is awesome in its own right. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do.

As of this morning, it's gone . . . .

That's fine if your into discord, but TK had the advantage that OOC comments were directly linked to the post.
So, you clicked on the Comment Button at the bottom of the post and it flipped to the comment panel where all the questions comments and rulings about the post were instantly visible. No need for chat sites, microphones and secondary channels, it was integral to the posting structure of your session and didn't clutter up the Session Log with loads of messy links.

No other hosting site seems to have that feature, which is a major drawback when managing a Pbp game.

Well, crap. First I heard about this was one of my players messaging me a few minutes ago to see if I knew why the site was down. A bit of Googling led me to reddit, led me to here. I wish I'd known in plenty of time so I could archive my game and download it...
May 2, 2025 4:17 am
Sorry to hear that Hunter, but welcome to GP -- a fabulous PbP site and community in its own right!
May 2, 2025 10:01 am
Fortunately, we had plenty of warning, so I was able to make sure I archived all my players' email addresses and can keep in touch and let them know if we are going to continue.

Also, one of my players, who is obviously a bit more tech-savvy than I am, managed to archive all of our Session Logs. So, hopefully, if we do decide to continue, we will still have our game history.

The biggest headache is trying to decide where to migrate the game. Tavern Keeper was such an amazing site, it's hard to find another that can match it's features. This site is pretty good, but it doesn't seem to have the same posting structure of Campaign>Roleplay Session>Player Post>Comment as Tavern Keeper, so it's going to be awkward to run the game. I'm used to being able to click on the Comment icon and type GM guidance and such.

I have just been sent links to the rescued game files from my former Tavern Keeper Game. I was fortunate that one of my Players is more tech-savvy than I am and managed not only to download all of the Session Logs, including the Test Session, but every Character Sheet as well.

I'm just downloading them all to my game folder now. 42 files 58.5 Mb of gameplay.

I'm just wondering if anyone else managed to rescue their game files, and if so, what you plan to do with them. I'm not sure whether to upload them as articles to my World Building Account on World Anvil or to try and recreate the game history here. Has anyone tried it?

They really need to be accessible to my players for reference. So, they need to be online somewhere.
