"We can handle the prisoner. We'll take you to the jail. Is this one magical, too?"
Mar 18, 2017 4:49 pm
"Excellent," says Jhishma, "Take the witch. Glad to be rid of her." Then the paladin grabs Hooda's arms and bares them to reveal the scars. "Keep an eye open for anyone else with scars like these. They're all part of a demon-worshipping cult who bring undeath to our lands. They should be apprehended on sight. Apparently, there's a score or more of them in town and they're planning something big. We're heading to Helge's tower, while our cleric keeps an eye on the inn, where we've heard that some the cultists might be hanging out."

"Now, tell me, what's made your day so grim? Nothing terribly untoward, I hope?"
Mar 18, 2017 6:51 pm
"There is a fever plague afoot. At least, it seems so. Nobody had died yet but plenty are laid up. Smart folk are avoiding all others, so we'll understand if you don't want to embrace." The soldier seems to be trying too hard to be jovial; the other two glare at him and shrug apologetically at you.

Another soldier points to the bitumen end of town. "Best skirt the town and then head for the tower. We'll take the witch and escort you, sir," he says, nodding at Fritz.
Mar 18, 2017 8:31 pm
Fritz nods back at the guard. "Excellent, thank you sir."

Nar has a thought. Removing his gauntlets and unstrapping the armor on his forearm, he shows his unblemished arms to the guards.

"You never know who the cult may have in their clutches. We should all get used to greeting each other like this. If you don't mind, gents..."
Mar 20, 2017 4:39 am
Owen nods at Nar's idea. "That is a sound plan. Openness is the easiest way to flush out these vermin."
Mar 20, 2017 2:18 pm
"This is an interesting plan, but it assumes all cultists bear similar scars..."

She turns to Hooda.

"Do all other cultists bear scars similar to yours?"
Mar 20, 2017 2:30 pm
Hooda looks at the scars, then nods over her gag.
Mar 20, 2017 7:55 pm
Nar waits for the guards, shifting his weight to the balls of his feet as they delay exposing their forearms...
Mar 20, 2017 8:47 pm
The guards watch Nar grow uncomfortable and edgy, and they grow uncomfortable. In the way of such things, they pass that moment where it seems like a reasonable delay. One finally breaks the silence with a, "For Pete's sake!" and tries to pull his mail up high enough to see his arms. The other guards take turns. They are all unscathed.

Cyrind'ae returns the favor by showing her arms to the guards. They can conclude that she does not cut for attention... :P
Mar 20, 2017 10:51 pm
Fritz reveals his smooth, pale, unscathed arm. "Terrific. Alright fellows, let's continue onward."
Mar 21, 2017 1:45 am
The guards roll down their mailed sleeves and take custody of Hooda. Together with the priest of Apollo, they go to the jail house. Within the confines of the prison, enruned shackles are placed on the necromancer, depriving her of her magic. She is then placed in a cell, a guard watching carefully.

Fritz is then shown to the Lost Duckling, a tavern across the way from the prison. The proprietor Luigi fills a mug and gets you a plate of food.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the team skirt the edge of town, and make their way to the tower by the river. They find the archmage, Helge, sitting at her table drinking tea and reading from a book. She looks up and smiles as she recognizes most of you.
Mar 21, 2017 4:47 am
"Greetings, Archmage. We trust you are well?" He waits for her courtesy, then continues, "We come bearing troubling news -- the demon cult is not finished with Marion Town, nor with you. Our intelligence tells us that they are amassing in a house near here and plan to perform some ritual in 2 days time. And they seem to need an artifact that they believe you possess, one that will allow them to control a dracolich that is currently resting in a sarcophagus in some caves near here. The artifact must have strong magic, for we have confronted the foul beast, and it is phenomenally powerful."

"For the good of all in the kingdom, we need to ensure that this artifact is safe and will not fall into the clutches of the cult."

"It is as he says," confirms Jhishma, "and the Duke sends a letter." The paladin hands her the Duke's message.
Mar 21, 2017 2:44 pm
Old Man Sydell appears from the upper floor, and fixes you tea as Helge reads the letter from the Duke. She makes an odd clucking noise with her tongue. Before placing the letter down.

"Syd, your old friend is awake, after all these years." the Old Man flinches, his back spasming in remembered pain. "Be a dear and fetch me the Diadem."

As 'Syd' battles off back upstairs to fetch this diadem. The archmage leans back in her chair, chewing her lip idly.

"Tell me more about your adventure while I think this through."

Fritz takes a long draw from his mug and delights in the smell of hot food before him. "Thank you, Luigi." He spins around in his seat and surveys the tavern, casually taking bites from his plate.

Taking the Helge's prompt as a cue, Grok bursts steps forward and starts waving the Dagger on an outstretched arm in front of him. Addressing the Archmage, Grok speaks awkwardly. "In bad place with drakkulikk in big coffin, I finds Sharpie, take it from bad place. Sharpie show Grok who bad and not. Makes Grok feel strong and smart and safe, but hurt brother. I thinks Sharpie like Grok but not like others, I keeps Sharpie safe." Grok grins hopefully at the Archmage, sure she'll make sense of this.

Helge picks up the letter and then puts it down again. "Dagger, please." She points and taps at a spot on the table for said dagger to be placed. Without waiting to see if he complies, she gets up, retrieves a mortal and pestle, and then grinds some black sand into black dust. If Grok allows, she will cast a spell sprinkling the black dust onto the blade.

Fritz

The tavern is much as many, perhaps a third full, with tradesmen and workers partaking of a mug of ale and bowl of stew following a day of labour and trade. A few youngsfolk regale each other of the undoubtedly minor adventures they have had this far in life, while sipping their watered wine.
