Your trip back to Harcourt is swift. You find the other jackalweres have abandoned their wagon, along with its empty barrels that once contained poison, and scattered to the winds. You retrieve your stashed wares from the hidey hole by the abandoned outpost. You find the path of destruction wrought by the elk stampede, and a few bodies of elk, and you give them a wide berth. The village of Clover Grove remains deserted, except for a few raccoons and birds that have moved in.

Late one evening you find yourselves back at Harcourt. The gates open ominously for you and you are escorted directly to the palace. The Duke shoos away his advisors, all but one (a man in a white hooded robes with golden adornments, over top of armor) and he bids you sit. Wine, fruit, cheese, and bread are brought out and you are assured that a more filling meal is being prepared.

"Tell me of your journey," he says.

The white robed young man shifts in his seat anxiously as the grizzled group of adventurers enter the chamber. He cautiously brings a cup of wine to his mouth, and sips slowly, being careful not to dribble any onto his pristine vestments. He sheepishly raises the cup to the group in polite acknowledgment and cracks a nervous smile.
Dec 31, 2016 8:01 pm
Cyrind'ae will bow to the duke and tell her story.

"Yes my Lord. We made our way into the hills where we spotted a camp manned by a few jackalweres and a troll which we dispatched in a kerfuffle. We learned from prisoners we made that they operated from some nearby cave. We went to investigate said cave and found a tiefling priest of Orcus there which we also dispatched. We, however, had to escape after awaking a dracolich. It does seem, however, that killing the priest of Orcus has disrupted the operation, as we found abandoned carts, most likely manned by other jackaleweres, on our way back."

She then turns to her companions to see if they want to add anything or correct any mistakes she might have made.
Jan 2, 2017 10:59 am
Grok shrugs, then seems to remember something. He raises a hand as if to say something, then looks sadly at the ground. "Had to smash puppy. It spat fire. Not like hurting puppy, but the fire hurt and made Grok angry." Slightly surprised at himself for speaking up, he looks confused at the others and takes a step back.
Jan 2, 2017 4:59 pm
"You should know that there are still a few intact barrels containing the vile poison.

The priest of Orcus had a desecrated altar and statue of Orcus, that appeared to me to be a place of sacrifice and summoning. And yes, there was a hellhound. Is there a holy man among your advisors who can tell us was all this means? We have many questions."
OOC:
I don't remember how many barrels or where, but Nar does and he relays that info to the Duke

I had written this for Jhishma at the end of chapter two. Hope it's ok:
Omenstar says:
Jhishma regards the fur robe and one set of the fine clothes with an appraising eye, then he offers, "I don't mind carrying most of the coins if yous prefer to split the gold."
OOC:
Jhishma will take the copper, the silver, the platinum, the fur robe and one set of fine clothes, if you agree that that's fair.
Jan 2, 2017 5:45 pm
Not entirely comfortable in a court setting, Jhishma blurts out, "That dracolich was enormous and powerful, but it returned to its coffin - possibly because we disturbed the tiefling's ritual, but it's not certain."
Jan 3, 2017 2:10 am
Owen is content to let the others talk to the duke, he keeps quiet and gives the other man a good look over.
Jan 3, 2017 2:48 am
"What in the nine hells?" the Duke sputters. He stands up, and looks at the lot of you, mouth agape. "Did you say dracolich?"
Jan 3, 2017 3:53 am
"Yes Duke Harcourt. As Jhishma said, it quickly lost interest in us, but it is still indeed there..."
Jan 4, 2017 5:07 am
"Gods!" He paces back and forth several times. "First things first. Were there any signs of anyone else connected to this cult? Is there any further threat from the Untamed Hills besides this atrocity?"
Jan 4, 2017 5:44 am
"We saw no other sign. We routed the cavern, killed the troll, the warlock, hellhound, about 7 Jackalweres and scattered the rest, recovered the poison, captured the dagger of Orcus, and are pretty sure that the dracolich is back in it's sarcophagus."

did I just mention the dagger? thought Nar, Oops.

Nar chances a quick glance at Grok to see if the foul knife is still on him.
Jan 4, 2017 7:16 am
Grok stops absentmindedly picking his teeth with the dagger as Nar glances over. Having stopped listening for a bit, he let's go of the dagger (letting it once more hang on it's chain around his neck) and gives Nar a innocent, but questioning look. Remembering he is in court, he stands up straight and tries his best to look "sharp". Which in his case looks like a clowns impression of the kings guard, then failing to keep a straight face as a large grin shows up on his face.

OOC:
azira says:

I snorted out loud for reals when I read that.
Jan 6, 2017 1:45 am
The Duke is too preoccupied with his own thoughts to notice Grok's antics. "Small mercy there. You have done me a great service, but my reward shall only be more tasks. I would ask if you're up to it, but I cannot afford such kindness. I need you to ride back to Marian Town at first light. I will have letters for the archmage that must be delivered with all speed you can muster. This one," he waves to the man in white robes, "is Fritz Wilhelm, a priest of the light. Fill him in on your deeds, and hopefully his god will assist your own in delivering the letters safely."

The aforementioned dagger will, however, draw Fritz's eyes. It is crude and primitive, but something about it draws your attention. And dread.
Jan 6, 2017 2:10 am
Owen nods as the Duke speaks. Once the group is dismissed he holds a hand out to Fritz. "Well met. Normally I wouldn't have put much merit in holymen, but after seeing what I have the past few days I'm glad for you to join us."
Jan 6, 2017 2:12 am
Fritz's nervous smile fades and his eyes widen. He watches the dagger dangle back and forth, as if in a hypnotic daze. His head hums and throbs like an ox heart. A bead of sweat swells on his forehead and runs toward his chin, plopping into his cup of wine, and awaking him from his reverie. He blinks his eyes and sits up straight in his chair.

"At your service, gentlemen."

He clumsily sets his cup down and kneels before the adventuring party.

"Apollo's blessing."
Jan 6, 2017 3:00 am
OOC:
I'd assume a priest of Apollo would be comely...
Cyrind'ae greets the newcomer, his comeliness not going unnoticed, she blushes a bit while greeting him.

"Well met father Wilhelm, I am Loreseeker Syrind'ae Torviel."

She then notices he's staring at Grok's new prized possession.

"I see you sense it as well... What manner of accursed artefact have we unearthed... But quick, the journey will be long and we must not tarry."
Jan 6, 2017 5:16 am
"Deliver letters???" Jhishma blurts out, incredulously, "I'm sure you have an entire stable full of swift steeds and errand runners to spare, waiting for your orders. Why us?" the Paladin of The Queen of Winter continues to question, "We've told you all we know, but it seems you're not doing the favour back." the dragonborn growls.

He looks around the room defiantly, but those who know him detect his fear and discomfort in the court setting, and also because he understands what subordination is...and that he just exemplified it.

Jhishma finishes by bringing his gaze back around to the Duke, expecting reprimand or worse, but hoping for answers...
Jan 7, 2017 12:21 am
The Duke smirks at the paladin's outburst. "You misunderstand. Obtaining the archmage's assistance in this matter is the single most important thing that can be done for this kingdom. If you feel it beneath you, then by all means, take rest in the taverns of Harcourt. I understand that Innkeeper Durry has some rodents in his cellar and is offering a copper a tail."
Jan 7, 2017 1:38 am
He stares coldly at the dragonborn, before his gaze softens.

"We need you. The roads aren't safe. I would send an army to deliver this message, but I fear that would leave the north open to attack.

Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?"
Jan 7, 2017 5:25 am
On hearing the Duke recite the verse, tears flow freely down Jhishma's scaled cheeks. Although filled with emotion, his voice is steady enough for two words.

"We accept."
OOC:
that poem almost made me choke up IRL!
Jan 7, 2017 3:41 pm
Cyrind'ae is also moved by the poem. For a moment, the bard in her is tempted to compliment the Duke on it and ask him where it's from and permission to recite it herself, but then she realize the matter is urgent and time is short. She simply makes a mental note of remembering to ask the Duke on their next meeting, hopefully, in better circumstances...
Jan 7, 2017 8:36 pm
Fritz bows his head solemnly, clutches the delphic tripod around his neck and mutters a small prayer under his breath. Upon completion, he retrieves a small handkerchief from his robe and silently offers it to Jhishma.
Jan 11, 2017 8:07 pm
Rolling his eyes and muttering under his breath, "oh, for the love of..." then a little louder, "so, I guess a plate mail fitting is off the table. Let's hit the road."

Sidling up to Fritz as they're walking from the audience chamber, Nar puts a beefy arm over his shoulders, looks down and says just to him, "Welcome to the group, padre! I see you sense the dagger as well. Let me know as soon as you fight through your desire for it, so we can talk about how to get rid of it. If you fail to resist its pull, I can promise a respectful funeral service for whatever Grok leaves us to work with."
Jan 11, 2017 9:43 pm
"Nar!"

Then quickly catching them, she then addresses Fritz.

"I apologize for for Nar's behavior, the half-orcs tend to favor what I'd classify as 'brutal honesty'..."
Jan 11, 2017 10:12 pm
Nar stops and stares at Cyrind'ae for a moment, with a look of confusion on his face.

"You're...apologizing...for my 'racial' honesty? I suppose, bard, you would have preferred that I compose a flowery sonnet set to the lute in order to warn our new friend of the terrible effects of that foul blade?"

Then he looks at the bard, looks at the cleric, then looks back at the bard. "Oh! My apologies, friend bard," slowly lifting his arm away from Fritz. "Don't worry. I do think he's pretty, but he's not my type!"

He continues walking with the group, but now wears a bit of a smirk on his face.
Jan 11, 2017 10:54 pm
Fritz shudders as the vice grip from Nar's monstrous arm ceases. He sheepishly grins back up at Nar in an attempt to placate him, and shrinks to the back of the group, in step with the bard.

"Haha, no need to apologize. Honesty is always appreciated," he announces, his voice slightly cracking. He looks over into her kind eyes and mouths the words Thank you.
Jan 11, 2017 11:00 pm
Owen smiles at the banter, but does not get involved. "These people may just be worth staying with... maybe..." He thinks to himself. Retirement hadn't seemed so bad, but now that he was traveling with other warriors again, and meeting important people, he felt that he had missed it.
Jan 12, 2017 1:42 am
OOC:
If Nar wants the tiefling's platemail to be sized to him, that could be set up. You do have overnight before the king's letters will be ready, and the blacksmith will see it done.
Jan 12, 2017 8:22 pm
Having a nagging feeling there was something he should be paying attention to, Grok stops fondling his dagger in time to see that his companions have turned around and are walking out the door. Giving the Duke and his guards a weak smile, he promptly decides he should be leaving as well and runs after them.

When Nar discovers that they don't have to leave right away, he is ecstatic. Scooping up the tiefling acolyte's impressive looking spiked plate armor and sword, he reaches out to them with his divine sense. Not sure if it will work on inanimate objects, he drops by Fritz' quarters.

"Padre? You got a minute? We lifted these off of a real bad guy -- priest of Orcus -- and I was wondering if you can see if there is any evil in them before we use them. That is," he looks around the room for the bard, "If you're not otherwise occupied...I'd really appreciate it."

Jhishma simply practices with his greataxe and rests until departure next morning.
Jan 12, 2017 9:44 pm
After leaving the Duke, Grok wanders casually back to the baggage wagon and starts rummaging around in the bags of stuff the companions brought back with them. After a while he holds up a mask and triumphantly holds it up. "Got's it!".

He puts on the mask and walks up to the nearest Guard. "Hah! You no see Grok now! You see mask!" After which he wanders off in the city to try out his new look.

Fritz is startled by Nar's entrance.

"Ahhh! I mean uh," he grunts and tries to deepen his voice. "Sorry, you startled me."

Fritz gently runs his fingers over the spikes, and a shudder briskly runs up his spine.

"I'm happy to take a look at it, but unfortunately I won't be able to give you a good answer until tomorrow. I'll have to pray to Apollo to grant me the ability to sense evil in the morning."

He brings his head closer to the armor to see if he can discern any symbols or anything of significance from it without using divine power.

Grok wanders the town, his full face, bird mask pulled low. He gestures and performs silly antics, confident he won't be recognized even by his old mates.

After some time, a large, plump woman laughs at his funny ways, and waves a jug of mead at him from the doorway to her tavern, The Cast Iron.
Jan 13, 2017 7:41 am
Normally, Grok would be intimidated by such a scene, not sure what to do. But today; today Grok has a mask! He saunters over and leans against the door, eyeing the jug of mead. "You gonna drink that, mam? Name's not Grok."

Dusty gears that have never been used before start creaking in his head, he has an epiphany and adds: "Nottgrok. Name's Nottgrok. Grok not drink mead, but me Nottgrok, so can't hurt if I do, can it, Mam? Give us a swig."
Jan 14, 2017 1:47 am
The lady curtsy's in a playfull way and leads Nottgrok inside. "I'm Bede, meselfs. This be me bar, The Cast Iron. I builts it just for people like you to rest yeselfs."

As Nottgrok enters, a fiddler picks up a jaunty tune, and Bede gives Nottgrok a swig of the mead jug, and then twirls him into the room, dancing a jig with (or near) him.

Nottgrok begins to enjoy himself, finding freedom in his disguise. Each thing he tries causes the tavern goers endless mirth, and they all laugh, and clap, and cheer him on. Ladies vie to dance with him, men laugh and clap him on his back, drinks find themselves passing by, over, under and mostly through his lips.

As much fun as Nottgrok has, comraderie, attention, and acceptance like he's never before experienced, after a time, something niggles at the back of his mind. While he can't place it, he suddenly turns, and sees a woman of god-like beauty descend the stairs from the upper rooms. She is barely clothed at all, and a space is made for her to approach. She wanders up to Nottgrok and shyly blows him a kiss. He almost follows her up the stairs until something deep inside him opens his eyes to what is around him.

http://www.1zoom.net/big2/52/266866-Sepik.jpg

He screams (no doubt) and suddenly shockingly sober, he flees from the tavern.

What does he do?
Jan 14, 2017 11:44 pm
What would Nar do? Dung, Run!

Suddenly, as he realizes he is in a bad-bad place, Grok turns wide-eyed to the exit and runs full speed at the door, barely able to open it before smashing into it. He continues through the city streets, screaming bloody murder all the way to Nar's door. He starts pounding on it with all his might while yelling. "Bro! Nar! Hornie-people in bar!"

Taking a moment to breathe, he remembers what Nar called them last time he saw things like that. He thumps even harder on the door. "Demonses! Thems talk to Grok, they all fiend-like. But Grok remember! Nar say they BAD! BAD and eat Grok inside! Naaar!"

Panting, completely winded, he then collapses with his back to the door. He rips off his mask and tosses it to the ground, then feels the comfortable weight on his chest. He takes up the dagger, cradles it and starts whispering to it. "Sharpie protect Grok, sharpie make sure they not eat Grok inside. Sharpie always here..."
Jan 15, 2017 1:37 am
The bar patrons spill out of The Cast Iron and chase after Grok, but his stamina is greater than theirs and he loses them and makes it Nar's door.

Nar, having just set down his newly resized spiked full plate, hears Grok pounding on his door. Elsewhere, bells of alarm sound, and in the distance you can hear screams.

Your rooms are essentially adjoining, and so you will all hear Grok's pleas.
Jan 15, 2017 4:17 am
Owen was oiling his tools and weapons, his cloak laid out. He hears the commotion and hops up. Grabbing one of the shortswords he had already treated, he heads out of his room in a hurry. "What is going on? Is everyone alright?" He asks in a worried, serious tone whilst he approaches the scene.
Jan 16, 2017 4:21 am
Roused from his rest, Jhishma bursts from his room, "Grok!?!?! What's going on? Did you say demons? Grok, are you sure?" Then, seeing the drink in his eyes and hearing the screams in the distance, the paladin asks, "Grok, are you drunk? Have you scared some people?"
Jan 16, 2017 8:00 am
Grok snaps out of it, his discipline returning at Jhishma's stern voice. He gets back to his feet and drops the dagger so it once more hangs by it's chain.

"Um.. Nottgrok got drunk a bit, but it ok. It not Grok, you see? So..." Realizing he's not playing his best cards here, he grasps around for something else to say, then realizes the demons are probably more important.

"Oh, yeah. Grok went to tavern. Eh.. She call it Cast Iron or somethin'. Everyone so friendly. Then Grok see they have horns, like that guy in the cavern. And those demon-thingies in the street. Not know why not see it before, first they look friendly and normal, then they look all demon-y. Nar say to Grok once that demon-thingies be very bad and eat thing that make Grok Grok. Grok not scare any one, Grok just get away fast, and come get Nar. Nar always know what to do."
Jan 16, 2017 5:01 pm
Cyrind'ae tears herself from a book she was reading, poking her head from the door, looking inquisitively at what's happening in the corridor. She sees the rest of the group rounding around Grok, prodding him with questions about demons. She listens to Grok's story intently.

"Demons, like the one we met? Does he mean tieflings? There would be a bar of tieflings right in in this city beneath our very noses?"
Jan 16, 2017 11:01 pm
Hearing the discipline return to Grok's voice, Jhishma realizes his halforc friend has just delivered an extremely detailed and lucid description (for Grok) of events.

He turns to address Cyrind'ae first, "Yes, it seems that's the case. Grok knows demons and he knows tieflings and this is how he would describe them." Then, returning his attention to Grok, the dragonborn says with approval, assurance and authority in his voice: "You did good coming straight back here, Grok. We'll look into it further together as a company. As soon as Nar and his new friend-of-the-cloth appear in answer to your call we'll follow you back and you can show us exactly where you encountered the demons."

Grok stares past Jhishma, his mind working and re-working the evenings events. The gears that started in the bar have now gained momentum.

"Dagger. They..." He looks at Jhishma with an expression of sudden realization. Clearly having big thoughts inside that head for the first time, he struggles a bit with making them into words.

"Grok.. Ehm. Me." He wrinkles his eyebrows and looks at the ceiling for a moment, his brain muscles clearly working hard. He once again composes himself.

"Jhish. Me remember something. Maybe important? The dagger." He takes a deep breath.

"Me walk into bar, and they all be normal. Friendly, Grok had fun. Then was going to go upstairs, and I touch blade. Then everyone looked bad. Me think dagger let Grok see them true then. See their hearts. They be tied to sharpie, and..."

He picks up the dagger in his left hand and strokes the blade gingerly with his right. "Grok feel it. They not be tied to dagger. They be tied to big bad thing that want dagger."
Jan 17, 2017 4:05 pm
Owen relaxes somewhat, lowering his weapon. "You sure it wasn't just a bad dream or something Grok?" Owen asks the half-orc.
Jan 17, 2017 6:23 pm
Fritz rises up, a disappointed look growing on his face. "Sorry Nar. I can neither confirm, nor deny the presence of evil in this equipment. I will say though, they are of excellent qual-"

Loud banging and a commotion interrupt his speech. His brow furrows and a look of grave concern appears. He looks to Nar, and then proceeds to the door. "By the gods! Is that Grok?" He opens the door and gestures for Nar to lead the way.
Jan 17, 2017 7:48 pm
"Well, if Grok truly escaped them screaming like that, they know the jig is up. They either abandoned the place or are waiting in ambush for whomever's coming to investigate. Either way, I say better us than the town constabulary, if a trap is waiting for us at least we know what to expect..."
Jan 18, 2017 11:11 pm
Nar finally emerges from Fritz' quarters, probably confusing both Grok and Cyrind'ae.

After getting up to speed, "I agree with the bard -- this is a job for our crew. But I haven't known tieflings to cast a magical deceptive trap like that! I believe Grok's instincts are correct and we're dealing with demons. Be careful not to get lured in by their charms..."

Visibly relieved now that his companions is here --surely everything will be ok now, as they are smart and can fix anything-- Grok drops the dagger back onto it's chain and walks up to Nar. "Thanks, bro. Smash time now?" With his friends at his side, the fires of battle are once again lit in Grok's eyes.

Three of you will remember first hand a mass illusion perpetrated by cultists of Orcus that started in the prison back in Marian Town. That was the work of a powerful magician (who was never identified), or the direct intercession of the demon Prince itself.

As you prepare yourselves for three unknown, the alarm bells and screams cease and relative silence returns to the city.

A patrol of town guard is jogging your way, toward the prior alarms.
Jan 19, 2017 6:30 pm
"If demons are about, then we better investigate!" says, Jhishma, stating the obvious, "Let's move! Double time!" and the dragonborn gives everyone an 'are you ready?' look and heads quickly down the street to where Grok described his encounter.
Jan 19, 2017 6:56 pm
Owen follows, though with lest vigor than the dragon born.
Jan 20, 2017 12:24 am

Cyrind'ae will hail the town guards, acknowledging their presence.

"Hail to thee constable. What may I help you with?"
Jan 20, 2017 2:38 am
"Alarms! If you're good with a weapon, you're welcome to join us. Might be over now." The constable and his crew continue to jog toward the former sounds.

As those of you who follow Jhishma, including Owen and Nar, and maybe tipsy Grok who follows Nar, and assuming Fritz follows Nar, too, and Cyrind'ae who might be going with the patrol.

Okay, you race down the street with the patrol and find a small water brigade putting out the last touches on a fire charring the side of a tavern, with a sign labelled as The Cast Iron.

An aproned lady wipes her brow with her forearm and looks about. "There! That's the one that dids it!"

She is, of course, pointing at Grok.

If there are any demons about, they are well concealed.
Some kind of perceptiony roll (Insight or Perception) could be attempted. Or other kinds of sensings.
Jan 20, 2017 3:39 am
Owen looks around and approaches the tavern. "Let me have a look." He then casts detect magic to see if any concealment or illusions reside in the area.
OOC:

Detect Magic (Wis)
For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.

The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Failing to see through the deception of the woman, Cyrind'ae starts doubting Grok's story for a moment and is tempted to ask Grok if it is possible he might not have knocked over a candle in his frantic flight from the inn, but catches herself. Turning to the townguards, she tells them.

"This is ridiculous. Do you truly believe we would have offered you our help and followed you here had we known one among our mist was the culprit of the very crime you came to investigate? Clearly there is some form of mistaken identity at work here... perhaps even racism... maybe to this woman, all half-orcs look alike..."

"HORNS! She hornie! Look!" Grok yells out accusatively and points at her with fury in his eyes, only the figurative leash of the party restraining him from making a bloody scene.

But as his fingers leaves the dagger he stops in his stride and looks befuddled for a moment, he then looks down at his dagger, picks it up, looks back at her, drops the dagger, squints at her and grumbles a bit. A breath or two later the proverbial light dawns in his mind, and he picks up the dagger and walks to Nar. "Brother, touch it!"

Jhishma reaches for the head of the woman, and feels nothing out of the ordinary. She reacts violently, pulling a cudgel from behind her back and looks to want to brain him with it.

Behind her, the bar full of patrons gathered in the shadows behind the door begins to rush out toward you. They all brandish rudimentary clubs.

The patrol looks to intervene, but are clearly wary of striking either group.

The patrol moves to quiet things down, but the bar patrons seem to be enraged. They begin yelling, and run up to you all, surrounding the patrol as well.

The bar patrons made full moves and so won't attack this round. Each of you who isn't a dragonborn may now attack. Consider there are at least 2 who have moved up in front of each of you, and more coming.

Feeling threatened, epecially from the armed newcommers, Grok is about to let go of his inner reins and unleash the rage at the demonic beings when Nar's words get to him. He halts, and shakes his head as if trying to dislodge something behind his ear. As he comes somewhat to his senses, he let's his training take over and heeds Nar's command. The party takes up defensive positions, and the patrol intervenes to try and intimidate the would be battlers from starting something.

The patrons, spoiling for a fight, grumble at the odds arrayed against them, and turn back inside. The door closes behind them. The bar matron is shocked by this betrayal, and begins to laugh. A deep side-splitting laugh. Literally, her sides split and her clothes tear, as with each guffaw she grows several inches.

She stands before you, revealed to be a 12 foot tall giant demonoid, and as the patrol turns to face her, she waves her hand and they slumber to the ground, unconscious.

Jhishma's attack drives down the giant, toppling it into the ground. It dies instantly, even before it hits road.
The patrol, once woken up, arrest the entire Cast Iron patronry, on suspicion of consorting with demonic giants. It turns out that the creature was what is called, an Oni, which is not a demon at all, but a magical giant.

You return to the castle and explain to the guard captain what happened. The guards and medics patch you all up and explain that the alarm was really just some mischief makers, attempting to set a fire. It was quickly dealt with, although the culprits eluded capture.

You get what rest you can, but before you're entirely satisfied, morning breaks and a messenger summons you into the King's attendance. He thanks you for your assistance with the Oni and hands you two letters, both sealed magically with the King's sigil.

"Take these to Marian Town with all haste. There may be opposition on the road so keep your weapons close. No matter what happens, I need these in the archmage Helge's hands. Only she will know how to deal with the abomination you uncovered in the mountains."
Converse with the king if you would like, before you're escorted to the stables for mounts.

Cyrind'ae, satisfied with the resolution of yesterday's incident will still feel like Grok did not told them everything, before being summoned in front of the Duke Harcourt, she will try to strike a quick conversation with Grok.

Nar bows and takes his leave, happy with the fit of his new spikey plate mail. He heads with the rest of the party to the stables to retrieve their horses...that is if they are allotted horses this time.
Feb 4, 2017 4:40 am
Owen leaves as the others do, he prepares to head out.
Feb 4, 2017 7:40 pm
Fritz heads off to the stables with Nar.

Slightly surprised, and a bit embarrassed at being spoken to by the beautiful bard, Grok answers in a low voice. "I dunno. Found mask, wanted to try it out. Grok like it when people don't know it him. But then.. "

Grok takes the mask out of his back pocket, studies it, then puts it back. "It not that fun was it." He's silent for a while before continuing his tale.

"Grok just walk by, test mask. She give Grok drink. Grok not drink, but Grok figure since Grok in mask Grok is not Grok, so Grok drink. Was fun until she asked Grok to come.." Grok looks a bit panicky at the recollection of this. "Up stairs. Then Grok see everyone evil horn people! Grok run find Nar. Then we all go back and kill."

You can see the cogs in his head spinning for a while afterwards, then he looks up at Cyrind'ae and asks: "We did good?"

"We did good, brother. I don't know what a magical giant was doing in the capital city posing as an innkeeper, but we've shut that foolishness down, and the other patrons have been jailed."

He then has a thought... "Jhishma, Fritz, perhaps we should examine the other patrons -- from Grok's tale, it seems that there could be some more wolves in sheeps clothing among them. Grok, maybe you should come along, too, and see what sharpie tells us."

Nar will go by the constabulary with whoever wants to join, then catch up with everyone else at the stables. He intends to reach out with Divine Sense to check the prisoners for fiends. He's seen that trick before...
Feb 7, 2017 2:28 am
With Fritz's help, you're able to discern that the jailed patrons are all human. Perhaps there is some other explanation for what the dagger reveals to its possessor.
Feb 7, 2017 3:32 am
"Yes, we did good Grok."

Cyrind'ae is pensive.

"This was the mask we found on the priest of Orcus right? This means there was a cult of Orcus in this city all along, right under our noses! This is bad guys. Perhaps we should notify Duke Harcourt. I know we have a mission to carry out, but hopefully he has powerful mages and clerics under his employ who can purge this infiltration..."
Feb 7, 2017 3:43 am
Nar reaches out for the mask, "Let me try that thing..."

He puts the mask on and scans the prisoners, the party, and various passers by.

Jhishma growls after seeing the jailed humans, "I'll tell you what this reminds me of," says the dragonborn, "Abidal's jailbreak, that's what. Mass illusion and mass mind control - that's what we saw when Abidal escaped, and that's what happened here. At the jailbreak we saw it was powered by some blood magic. That's the part we haven't found here - the sacrifice..." The paladin trails off in thought.

"Anyhow," he goes on, "that's why I'm anxious to deliver the Duke's letter. Helge will know what to do - and maybe even have some answers. It all seems connected to me."
Feb 7, 2017 5:33 am
"I agree with Jhishma. We should see to the letters first. It would put me at ease if that was over with. Every moment increases our chances of losing them, getting assaulted, or worse."
Feb 7, 2017 8:30 am
Grok touches the dagger gingerly and stares at the prisoners with a mean grimace, scrunching up his face and bulging one eye towards them as if to say "I'm on to you punks!".

"We not do that again. That make Grok feel like building land on head." He looks around at his friends, then the prisoners, then towards the exit. "Not care if them really bad or just bad, leave 'em to rot. Let's get on road. Grok not like this place anymore."
Feb 10, 2017 12:53 am
"I felt like the knife was trying to convince me that they are innocents -- that they didn't know about the giant -- but I was able to resist."

"Jishma, do you see any value in perhaps the two of us having a private meeting with one of these 'people'? Maybe get some answers? I worry that we're leaving this city with a disease that they won't be able to cure."

"That might be a good idea," the dragonborn answers to Nar with a voice of gravel, "Lemme think a sec..."

Jhishma used his divine sense in the prison with Abidal and he was able to detect something. "No," states Jhishma flatly, giving his head a shake after pausing a moment to feel the air, "there's no diabolical or aberrant energy at work here that I can detect. I felt it last time, but I do not feel it now."

Lifting his voice a little louder, he says, "Be ready to ride for the wizard Helge in one hour!"

Turning to Jhishma.

"Shouldn't we still warn Duke Harcourt, at least so he can get his people to investigate this? Better to be sure than sorry. Who knows, maybe the reason you don't feel aberrant energies is because they improved their process? I know I might be reaching at straws here, but it still does seem imprudent to not at the very least warn the Duke."
Feb 10, 2017 4:06 pm
Turning to Cyrind'ae, the dragonborn answers, "You've got an hour. If it makes you feel better, go advise the Duke to put extra guards over the dungeon, if you wish. Other than that, he has no other advisors or special resources - that's what he's sending us to Helge for! We've already tarried in these distractions too long. You've got an hour."
OOC:
I know Jhishma comes across as bossy. hope you don't mind. it's just his blunt soldiery background salted with his more recent few years as a mercenary. nothing personal. plus, court and royalty is out of his comfort zone, so he's not interested in returning to the Duke - especially after the last, highly emotional interaction with the poem...

Cyrind'ae finds herself in front of the Duke. He is reviewing a scroll with a scribe looking person. He nods at something and the scribe shuffles off.

"I understand your group destroyed a shape-shifting giant last night. Thank you. Did they ride off to Marian Town and leave you behind, Lady Torviel?"
Feb 11, 2017 6:29 pm
"No, we're leaving in an hour. We went to inspect the patrons who were arrested closer as Grok insisted he saw those people with horns last night... It's all a bit vague, Grok is not exactly known for his eloquence... But what I understood is that the reason Grok had been invited to this tavern is because he was wearing a mask we found on the body of a dead Orcus priest we defeated. It would seem the staff and patrons of this establishment are most likely members of a cult of Orcus. There is also the fact that while observing them, something odd happened to Nar, which I believe he should retell you himself since second-hand accounts are always a little less reliable. But it did gave him some sense of déjà vu on how this whole demon mess started... It is my understanding you have been debriefed about those events already."
Feb 11, 2017 7:05 pm
"M'lord. We don't get a sense that these people are fiends exactly, but I do believe them to be allies of Orcus -- As Cyrind'ae said, likely members of a cult of Orcus. As you recall, a similar group was able to open a portal to the Abyss and allow demons to harass townsfolk." He pauses and adds, "Until we killed them all, that is. Since we were leaving, we felt it was important that you and your constable know that they have nefarious motivations and may have allies outside the jail working with them."

He gives short bow to indicate that his report is complete and awaits dismissal.
Feb 11, 2017 7:14 pm
He glowers as Cyrind'ae's story unfolds, and then Nar adds in his own contribution. "The prison break. Yes. It was too much to hope that cult had no designs on the capital." He beckons a guard and a scribe both over. He quickly scratches out a message on a scroll. The scribe deftly blows sand on the ink, rolls the parchment, and ties it with a ribbon and hands it to the guard. "Take that to Captain Portak, as quick as you can."

He turns back to the bard and paladin. "I've ordered increased security on the prison. Any demonic rituals they attempt will be met with a storm of crossbow bolts."

He considers the half-elf woman for a moment, before similarly appraising the half-orc, then rising and pacing. "My sages tell me that there was a demon invasion once before. It was generations ago. Only some elves may still be alive from such a time. It happened in many ways similar to recent events. The population was stirred up, a cult arose with promises of power and wealth, then a night of terror. In that night, one single night, a city was consumed by fire. While it seems that the demons were all banished by the heroes of the time, ever since, we have had repeated problems with the undead."

He stops his pacing and looks at Cyrind'ae and Nar again. "The rise of an undead dragon, however, is unprecedented. Orcus grows bolder. The archwizard Helge is the only hero I know of sufficient stature as to challenge such a monster. Ride swift. Ride swift for us all."
Feb 11, 2017 8:14 pm
Cyrind'ae takes the scroll and bows to Duke Harcourt.

"It will be done my Lord."

She then promptly seek Captain Portak to hand him the scroll in person before joining the rest of the group and informing Jhishma that they are ready to leave now.

Walking with Cyrind'ae, Nar muses, "Well, back to being a messenger service. I can't imagine that the mage can devise a plan to deal with that dracolich. One blast of it's necrotic breath would take out half the party. You've read lots of books -- how do you fight something like that?"
Feb 12, 2017 3:20 am
"I'm more versed in history. I've heard of heroes banding together to take down similar threats in the past, but those historical figures were extremely powerful individuals..."
Feb 12, 2017 6:06 am
Owen is content to fully prepare himself and wait at the stables for his allies.
Feb 13, 2017 2:08 am
After gathering together once more at the stables, you gather your assigned mounts and ride off. It is a two day ride to Marian Town, a bit shorter if you disregard the health of your mounts. As before, you note the heavy stature of the steeds - these draft horses are well suited to carrying men with armor, though at the expense of speed. Still, they have endurance to spare.

You ride for sometime, chewing up most of the first day. In the mid-afternoon, you come upon a bridge. When you crossed it the first time, on your journey up, however, the crossing was easier. Mostly because it wasn't blocked by a horde of zombies!
You are 100 feet from the bridge when you spot all of this. The river that the bridge crosses is too wide and fast to cross without the bridge. The bridge is 10 feet wide and 100 feet long. There are 12 zombies, clumped in the middle. That is, 2 wide by 6 deep, (10' x 30'). The first zombies are 30 feet from your side of the bridge.

At the far side is another humanoid on a riding horse. A full cloak obscures all his features, and it watches the zombies patiently. The person is 100 feet past the far side of the bridge.

If you attempt to cross the bridge, then roll initiative and let me know how you're going to proceed.

Note: 5e has incomplete rules for shenanigans on horseback. If you have a particular idea, like charging through the whole pack, let me know and I'll houserule something.
Feb 13, 2017 6:30 am
Nar continues at a steady pace as if he is unmoved by the presence of the zombies, gives a little smile to Jishma and Grok, then turns to Fritz, "Padre, if you're an undead specialist, speak now, because I'm feeling like a game of ten, er, twelve-pins!"

To Owen and Cyrind'ae, "I'd wager that the cloaked one is the controller. Can you hit him from here?"

As they travel Owen keeps his eyes on the forest. Usually trouble comes from there in his experience. He is surprised when the group stops before the horde. At Nar's question, he squints with his hand over his eyes at the hooded figure "Aye. I could hit him."
OOC:
Is this area considered forest?

My understanding of the ranges (correct me if I'm wrong):
100 feet to the bridge + 30 feet to the zombies = 130 feet to the zombies
100 feet to the bridge + 30 feet to the zombies +30 feet to the far side of the bridge + 100 feet = 260 feet to the cloaked figure (long range for long bow)
Jhishma barks, "Right behind you, Fritz!" and gallops forward, preparing to breathe his draconic ice breath on any zombies that don't flee from Fritz's holy denunciation.

What 100/400 means is that anything over 100 feet is considered long range for that weapon, and therefore Disadvantage. Anything beyond 400 feet is untargetable. The cloaked figure was described as being about ~260 feet away.

It's 300' to the rider. 100' to the bridge, the bridge is 100' long, and it is 100' further. But in (long) range of both the heavy crossbow and the longbow, though with Disadvantage. Need a second roll from Owen re: disadvantage.

It is a 130' to the closest two zombies.
Cyrind'ae's arrow sails high into the air, signalling your aggressive intentions. After reaching an apex, it curves down, straight and true, but misses the rider and horse.
OOC:
@Nar: The bridge is 10 feet wide, so two horses across. Your horse moves independently of your actions. In 5e, an attacker can move before and/or after the attack. Alternatively, you could have the horse move, you attack, then with the horse's second move action, disengage and retreat.

@Fritz: A double move from your horse (move 50') will put you at the base of the bridge, which is only 30' range to the first two zombies. You would need to get closer than that to affect more than 2.
Feb 15, 2017 1:53 am
The front line sprints on their horses toward the bridge -- and when they arrive, Nar springs off and runs up to the zombies, swinging his maul!
OOC:
I'll wait for initiative order to be established, but I think the horse can move, dash, then Nar can move 30' and attack. He doesn't want to expose his horse to zombie attacks, and thinks he can do more damage swinging away.

We have Jhishma and Fritz at the base of the bridge (30' from the zombies), Grok and Nar dismounted and running at the zombies, 15' away, Owen and Cyrind'ae 100' from the bridge (unless you move after your shots).
The zombies shuffle forward toward the half orcs, at which time Fritz may trigger his Turn Undead attempt, and Jhishma may use his dragon breath, although the half orcs are between he and the horde.

After the Readied Action to Turn Undead, I will resolve the zombies face munching extravaganza.

Jhishma and Owen ride after the rider, skirting past the fleeing zombie horde. As they near the spot where the rider disappeared from, you can see movement deep in the woods. The rider is perhaps 200' away and headed into the woods at full speed. Owen looses an arrow at range from galloping horseback, but the arrow is deflected by branches between you and it.

With a guttural roar Jhishma stands in his stirrups and leans out over his horse's neck and breathes cold, draconic frost all over the three zombies who are ambling by, then he'll stow his wand and get ready with his greataxe.

Shambling Sherman takes the radiant damage from Fritz's Sacred Flame.
Grok hits Z6 for 17 damage, killing it.

Owen, with an improbable shot, through nearly full cover (trees and branches, etc.) and at range, spies a bit of the fleeing rider and brings down the horse. The horse goes down and the rider disappears behind the folliage.

The three fleeing zombies all attempt to resist Jhishma's terrible breath... two take the full brunt, but the farthest takes only partial damage.

Clapping Grok on the shoulder, Nar says, "Fine strike, brother! Now to Jhishma!"

Nar wheels his horse around and gallops to Thing 1, the nearest zombie and brings the maul down in a wide arc.

In the same motion, Nar brings the maul back up across the jaw of Thing 2, but misses wide.

Between the lot of you, you finish off the remaining zombie. You find yourself in a sudden calm, the previously animated corpses of the recently dead still. Birds begin once more to chirp, and the buzz of insects returns as flies descend on the zombies.

Seeing Nar ride up to join them, he also commends the warrior's ferocity in battle, "Well fought, Nar. Keep that up and you'll soon be a legend in your own time!"

In the off-chance that the robed figure was an undead or fiend, etc. Jhishma will extend his divine sense into the woods in the hopes of catching a "glimpse" of their enemy...

Fortunately, Nar's blush comes out as green on his grey skin, and nobody notices.

With the smallest of "aw, shucks" smiles, and at a loss for words from what has been a rare compliment in the rough life of a half-orc, he turns to his brother from another mother (quite common among half-orcs), Grok, speaking quietly. "Brother, you've always been an excellent tracker, and Owen seems a bit out of sorts. What can you see? And, I hate to bring this up, but does Sharpie tell you anything? Mar 8, 2017 3:54 pm
"She seems to fear her master much more than us... I doubt she'll give us any trouble in the future. Most likely, she'll find a way to hide from her master..."

She then turns to Fritz. "Sorry to bother you father, but can you spare some healing? I am pretty badly injured myself..."
Mar 8, 2017 4:23 pm
"Answer my questions completely and in good faith, Hooda. Then, yes, I will set you free." Jhishma gives a look to Owen as if to say, Stay your hand.
Mar 8, 2017 4:29 pm
"It's no bother. Is anyone else badly injured? I have a prayer that works on multiple parties. If not, I'll be happy to just take care of Cyrind'ae."

Mar 9, 2017 3:52 pm
Hooda appears willing to take the paladin at his word. She will stand if allowed, and relate the following:

Our Lord father, Prince of the Undead, has commanded us to prepare to strike. We have gathered in the secret places, and know this land is weak. Our plans were interrupted when the acolyte Rigavian was captured. We sent a number of followers into the prison, and were blessed with the Prince's blessing. The notorious criminal Gilchan Abidal was also hired to assist in the escape.

We could have destroyed the prison, but we wished to undermine the rule of law. Still, vigilantes were successful in interfering with those plans, and Rigavian was unable to retrieve certain artifacts from the archmages abode. Artifacts that would allow us to control a great beast hidden in the mountains.

Regardless, we must strike now, and burn this land. Our rewards will be eternal.

She looks hard at each of you, clearly hoping that one of you will come to her aid.
Mar 9, 2017 5:01 pm
To Fritz, "I think we're all significantly damaged. Just don't heal this filth in the crossfire."

He glances at Grok, who is trying to figure out how to put horsie back together, to see if her words have any effect on the bearer of Sharpie.

He looks back at Hooda and becomes thoughtful. Internally, he is struggling with his need to rain vengence down upon this minion of evil and what that might do to betray his captain's honor. If it were his own honor at stake, he would kill her, no question. If only there were something to gain in the greater fight by letting her go...the turmoil is evident on his face.

Grok, completely oblivious to what the rest of you are doing, is stroking the neck of his horse while feeding it dried fruit.
Mar 9, 2017 6:05 pm
Fritz's face wrinkles at the hooded figure.

"Sometimes I pity misguided heathens like yourself." He moves in close to Hooda. "Apollo is waiting for you to open up your heart to his light. You still have a chance."

Fritz moves back and takes a seat on a nearby rock. "This prayer will take a little while, but it seems like we have the time." He makes eye contact with Hooda again. "Witness the power of the light."

Jhishma listens to Hooda with disgust. "I've heard enough. If it's Helge's artifacts they're after, then we've already wasted too much time here."

"Cyrind'ae, relieve the witch of any reagents, crystals, wand or other arcane focus. And if she's got a spellbook, take that too."

Looking over towards Grok, he calls, "Grok! If Fritz can't help your horse at this point, no one can. Sorry, friend. Now, get over here and cut out Hooda's tongue!"

Turning back towards the witch, the dragonborn adds, "I'll make sure she doesn't die from it, but she'll never cast another spell, that's for damn sure..."
OOC:
Jhishma will cast Cure Wounds on the witch to keep her alive if needed when Grok cuts out her tongue.

Nodding in approval, and brimming with pride in his captain, Nar walks over to horsie. If Fritz's healing didn't apply to him, Nar will kneel beside him and lay on hands for 1 hp.

Gathering hi own horse, Nar offers it to the team, "Two of you might fit on her. I'll walk."
Mar 9, 2017 9:09 pm
Looking up at Nar and Frits, unsure who's magic did the trick, Grok picks up both of them and starts dancing a happy (but not entirely graceful) dance. "You fix Horise! Grok loves you bros! Horsie good now!"
Mar 9, 2017 9:34 pm
A look of utter terror flashes on Fritz's face as Grok embraces him. "Ahhhhhhh."
Mar 10, 2017 1:11 am
Cyrind'ae will approach the women.

"You've heart the dragonborn, hand me your spell components and any weapons and magic items you carry, we're letting you go with the bare minimum. If you fear your master much more than you fear us, then I suggest you flea those lands and never show your face again. Perhaps head Fritz's words, mend your ways and give up the dark arts."

At the mention of cutting the woman's tongue, Cyrind'ae will frown.

"Is this really necessary? This sounds unusually cruel. Simply letting her go unarmed seems punishment enough for now. She'll already be dealing with surviving in nature, and hiding from and running away from her former employer. I doubt she'll have the time or the opportunity to cause any mischiefs..."
Mar 10, 2017 1:28 am
Responding to Cyrind'ae, "Her heart is black, blind and in the unrelenting grip of the prince of undeath. She must never have the ability to cast another spell - especially necromancy - for the rest of her life...what's left of it... The only other alternative is execution, but that went off the table when I gave my word she could go free."

"Grok! As I said, cut out her tongue."
Mar 10, 2017 1:35 am
"I must agree with Cyrind'ae on this matter. Though I won't stay your hand."
Mar 10, 2017 1:41 am
Searching the necromancer, you find a hand-sickle, the leather armor she is wearing, and odds and ends for casting spells (but no spell book). She had no waterskin, food, or other survival gear, although such might be on her dead horse.

At the prospect of cutting her tongue out, Hooda grows dark in countenance. Her muscles bunch as if she is going to fight, though her chances are slim.
Mar 10, 2017 2:06 am
Cyrind'ae starts searching the dead horse for the rest of the necromancer's stuff.

"You want to be the leader of this little group, fine, I have no objections. I'm more comfortable with books and stories than with people. But I draw the line at cruel punishments. Destroy her spellbook and take her raegents away, this will prevent her from casting. Beat her unconscious if you have to! As I said, she has more pressing problems right now. Though we spared her life, I doubt her employer will be as merciful..."

Nar takes in the debate and is thoughtful for a moment.

"So far she hasn't told us anything we don't already know, other than shedding light on why they want something from Helge. If we set this witch free with her faculties, it will surely come back to us. Death is more merciful than living as blind mute."

Looking for compromise he suggests, "Perhaps if we get actionable intelligence from her like the location of troops and concrete invasion plans, her fate would be sealed as a traitor."
Mar 10, 2017 2:43 pm
"Yes, we can get some more information out of her. Reason enough to not cut her tongue off..."
Mar 10, 2017 4:20 pm
Jhishma laughs.

"Grasping for excuses to be merciful to this murdering demon worshipper now, are we? Very well..."

The dragonborn turns back to the witch and says, "I don't know how you did it, but it seems you made some friends among my companions. Anything to tell that would make you deserving of the mercy they speak of? Be quick! I have a feeling this is your last chance."

Cyrind'ae finds little on her horse, other than an explorer's pack. There is no food or water, or any utensils, pots, or such. If she has a spellbook, then it is somewhere else.

Owen taps into his Primeval Awareness. As his senses expand, he gets the impression that there are both undead and fey within 6 miles of your location. To be clear, you did let one zombie run away (back across the bridge behind you).

Hooda relaxes hearing that the tonguectomy may be postponed for a moment. "You want to know more? I can tell you that there is a house in Marian Town that would appreciate having me back. I have lots of friends there, and we have this big job coming up. We need to make a big sacrifice to The Lord Prince, to attone for our failures and to ascend to the higher state." She pulls her sleeves up, revealing her arms. They are deathly pale, with the palour of undeath, and crisscrossed with ritual scars. "I am nearly there," she says proudly, "but still living. Soon, though!"

She explains where this house can be found; it is between the prison and the archmage's tower. She also tells you that there are no more than 20 cultists in the house, and more are to gather in two days time, for the big sacrifice. The other cultists are either locals, or staying in the inns. You can identify them by ritual scarring on their forearms, like hers.

Surprised at the sudden change of heart of her prisoner brought on by Fritz's spell, Cyrind'ae turns to Jhishma.

"See, there is always an alternative..."
Mar 12, 2017 8:08 pm
Fritz's mouth drops open.

"Uhhm. Uh. That's-" He looks around at his companions searching for what to do next. "It's never too late to change your ways. There is a temple of Apollo to the north. You can find refuge and redemption there, if you're interested. That is if my companions are finished with you."
Mar 13, 2017 3:19 am
Jhishma grunts, "The woman spoke under compulsion to Fritz. Perhaps even stronger compulsion than when she answered me. She repented to you, Fritz. She is now your charge. If her forced confession satisfies you, I recommend you take her under your care and don't let her out of your sight. Do what you will, but Fritz, if you let her go, don't be too surprised the next time we're ambushed."

Jhishma sounds his horn and calls to the others, "We march for Marian Town! We have a letter to deliver, a diabolical ritual to stop, and we're unhorsed. No more delays."
Mar 13, 2017 3:20 am
Owen approaches, having missed the means of her conversion. "Put the fear of god her literally did you?" He says, eyeing her. Then gets back to business. "There are undead and fey in the area. Mar 15, 2017 12:48 pm
Some time later...

As you top a rise on the road, you can finally see Marian Town, and beyond it, the Greyback River that bisects the Duchy of Harcourt. Harcourt is really an independent kingdom, following a barely-bloody war of succession a generation ago, but the name Duchy of Harcourt remains out of a fierce sort of defiance.

The town smokes near the water, but not too near. Closest to the river is a tall, oddly shaped tower atop a misplaced hill that lifts above the ground and towers over the river. On the left side of the tower from your position is a lower, river level depression where the ferry and docks, and a smelly shanty town where a large number of fisherfolk live.

Higher up and on the right side of the tower from you, is the town proper, a thriving trading town along two intersecting trade routes, three if you count the river, and a military outpost that defends the region. The bustle of the town relies on abundant labourers for hire, and a soldiery with a penchant for spending their wages on drink and song. Still, it is an orderly town, and Colonel Brightmane brooks no debauchery from his troops. Well, very little. Okay, some, but strictly honorable things.

The jail is on the far right side of the town. You do have the prisoner still in tow.
Mar 15, 2017 2:25 pm
Jhishma suggests, "We go first to Helge's tower and present the letters. Based on that, she may have advice, plans or concerns that will inform next moves. After that, we deliver Hooda to Brightmane, tell him the story of cultists among the locals, show him her scars and send him on a witch hunt. Then, we deal with the cultists' den in that house Hooda described. Sound good?"

"I'd suggest playing to your strengths -- maybe connect with a local shrine -- hide in plain sight."
Mar 17, 2017 4:48 am
As you approach Marion Town discussing your possible plans, you realize that something is amiss. You can't placed your finger on it at first, but then it hits you - the normal bustle of townsfolk out and about has been replaced by silence. A lone patrol of three guards is spotted, and they soon turn from their route and jog in your direction.

They meet up with you about a half mile from the edge of town. Two cover you with crossbows, but don't point them directly at you. "Ho, there," the leader says. "What brings you to Marion Town on such a grim day?"
Mar 17, 2017 1:56 pm
"We are on official business from Duke Harcourt. We have an urgent message to deliver to the archmage in town. We also have a prisoner, an ex-member of the cult of Orcus who has been giving you so much trouble and who wish to amend her evil ways..."
Mar 18, 2017 3:43 am
"We can handle the prisoner. We'll take you to the jail. Is this one magical, too?"
Mar 18, 2017 4:49 pm
"Excellent," says Jhishma, "Take the witch. Glad to be rid of her." Then the paladin grabs Hooda's arms and bares them to reveal the scars. "Keep an eye open for anyone else with scars like these. They're all part of a demon-worshipping cult who bring undeath to our lands. They should be apprehended on sight. Apparently, there's a score or more of them in town and they're planning something big. We're heading to Helge's tower, while our cleric keeps an eye on the inn, where we've heard that some the cultists might be hanging out."

"Now, tell me, what's made your day so grim? Nothing terribly untoward, I hope?"
Mar 18, 2017 6:51 pm
"There is a fever plague afoot. At least, it seems so. Nobody had died yet but plenty are laid up. Smart folk are avoiding all others, so we'll understand if you don't want to embrace." The soldier seems to be trying too hard to be jovial; the other two glare at him and shrug apologetically at you.

Another soldier points to the bitumen end of town. "Best skirt the town and then head for the tower. We'll take the witch and escort you, sir," he says, nodding at Fritz.
Mar 18, 2017 8:31 pm
Fritz nods back at the guard. "Excellent, thank you sir."
Mar 19, 2017 2:20 am
Nar has a thought. Removing his gauntlets and unstrapping the armor on his forearm, he shows his unblemished arms to the guards.

"You never know who the cult may have in their clutches. We should all get used to greeting each other like this. If you don't mind, gents..."
Mar 20, 2017 4:39 am
Owen nods at Nar's idea. "That is a sound plan. Openness is the easiest way to flush out these vermin."
Mar 20, 2017 2:18 pm
"This is an interesting plan, but it assumes all cultists bear similar scars..."

She turns to Hooda.

"Do all other cultists bear scars similar to yours?"
Mar 20, 2017 2:30 pm
Hooda looks at the scars, then nods over her gag.
Mar 20, 2017 7:55 pm
Nar waits for the guards, shifting his weight to the balls of his feet as they delay exposing their forearms...
Mar 20, 2017 8:47 pm
The guards watch Nar grow uncomfortable and edgy, and they grow uncomfortable. In the way of such things, they pass that moment where it seems like a reasonable delay. One finally breaks the silence with a, "For Pete's sake!" and tries to pull his mail up high enough to see his arms. The other guards take turns. They are all unscathed.
Mar 20, 2017 10:47 pm
Cyrind'ae returns the favor by showing her arms to the guards. They can conclude that she does not cut for attention... :P
Mar 20, 2017 10:51 pm
Fritz reveals his smooth, pale, unscathed arm. "Terrific. Alright fellows, let's continue onward."
Mar 21, 2017 1:45 am
The guards roll down their mailed sleeves and take custody of Hooda. Together with the priest of Apollo, they go to the jail house. Within the confines of the prison, enruned shackles are placed on the necromancer, depriving her of her magic. She is then placed in a cell, a guard watching carefully.

Fritz is then shown to the Lost Duckling, a tavern across the way from the prison. The proprietor Luigi fills a mug and gets you a plate of food.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the team skirt the edge of town, and make their way to the tower by the river. They find the archmage, Helge, sitting at her table drinking tea and reading from a book. She looks up and smiles as she recognizes most of you.
Mar 21, 2017 4:47 am
"Greetings, Archmage. We trust you are well?" He waits for her courtesy, then continues, "We come bearing troubling news -- the demon cult is not finished with Marion Town, nor with you. Our intelligence tells us that they are amassing in a house near here and plan to perform some ritual in 2 days time. And they seem to need an artifact that they believe you possess, one that will allow them to control a dracolich that is currently resting in a sarcophagus in some caves near here. The artifact must have strong magic, for we have confronted the foul beast, and it is phenomenally powerful."

"For the good of all in the kingdom, we need to ensure that this artifact is safe and will not fall into the clutches of the cult."

"It is as he says," confirms Jhishma, "and the Duke sends a letter." The paladin hands her the Duke's message.
Mar 21, 2017 2:44 pm
Old Man Sydell appears from the upper floor, and fixes you tea as Helge reads the letter from the Duke. She makes an odd clucking noise with her tongue. Before placing the letter down.

"Syd, your old friend is awake, after all these years." the Old Man flinches, his back spasming in remembered pain. "Be a dear and fetch me the Diadem."

As 'Syd' battles off back upstairs to fetch this diadem. The archmage leans back in her chair, chewing her lip idly.

"Tell me more about your adventure while I think this through."
Mar 21, 2017 9:49 pm
Fritz takes a long draw from his mug and delights in the smell of hot food before him. "Thank you, Luigi." He spins around in his seat and surveys the tavern, casually taking bites from his plate.
Mar 21, 2017 10:15 pm
Taking the Helge's prompt as a cue, Grok bursts steps forward and starts waving the Dagger on an outstretched arm in front of him. Addressing the Archmage, Grok speaks awkwardly. "In bad place with drakkulikk in big coffin, I finds Sharpie, take it from bad place. Sharpie show Grok who bad and not. Makes Grok feel strong and smart and safe, but hurt brother. I thinks Sharpie like Grok but not like others, I keeps Sharpie safe." Grok grins hopefully at the Archmage, sure she'll make sense of this.
Mar 21, 2017 11:21 pm
Helge picks up the letter and then puts it down again. "Dagger, please." She points and taps at a spot on the table for said dagger to be placed. Without waiting to see if he complies, she gets up, retrieves a mortal and pestle, and then grinds some black sand into black dust. If Grok allows, she will cast a spell sprinkling the black dust onto the blade.

The tavern is much as many, perhaps a third full, with tradesmen and workers partaking of a mug of ale and bowl of stew following a day of labour and trade. A few youngsfolk regale each other of the undoubtedly minor adventures they have had this far in life, while sipping their watered wine.

Grok lays the dagger gently on the indicated spot on the table while looking quizzically at the Archmage. He keeps close to the dagger though, fear of losing the dagger mixing with an affinity of taking orders and curiosity about what Helge's up to.

Fritz

You grow to admire their exuberance if only in some small way, until a forearm is bared. The purposeful markings chill your spine. It is confusing, how they can bee so lively, youthful, playful even, while all deep in thrall of the undead-loving demon.

Grok & Company

Helge cats the spell, and the black dust, sparkles and flares, burning of as it touches the blade. Her lips move automatically, and she breathes out a prayer:

Thine eye be struck, grow hard inside, get your people across any divide,
A wanderer may with a blade to play find his kinsmen without need for luck,
Worship thy host, speak Hallisling, and I'll show you your friends, soulstruck.

She gestures idly for Grok to take the blade. "Soulstruck, an ancient tool. It must be dedicated to Orcus, though any priest can change that."
Mar 22, 2017 2:32 pm
"Well lucky us, we happen to know a priest."
Mar 22, 2017 2:51 pm
Helge points at the two paladins. "Either of these two would suffice, as well."

Old Man Sydell comes down the stairs with a small wooden box, plain of design, but old. He hands it to her reverently. She opens it and pulls out a bent crown. She frowns, unbends it, and then examines it critically. "Behold, the Diadem of Veringvox!" She tosses it into the table. "Never treat such filth with reverence. They seem to grow stronger with praise."
Mar 22, 2017 2:59 pm
"Call me dim, Archmage, but I don't follow," says Jhishma impatiently, "You want me to put on the crown and bless the dagger or something?"

Then the paladin crosses his silver scaled arms over his chest and asks another question, "The Duke said you'd know how to stop this cult and the dracolich...so, do you, or not? We're here to follow your lead and advice, if you'll straightly give it."
Mar 22, 2017 3:20 pm
Helge nods at the dragonborn. "The dagger is irrelevant. It is merely a tool that currently find friends of Orcus. Dedicate it to your god, and it will find fellow devotees."

She points at the crown. "This will control the dracolich. I will keep it safe, and deal with that abomination once and for all."

"The Duke gave me no instructions on the cult, other than to be on the lookout for them. I leave that for you to deal with, while I prepare to confront Veringvox. Let me know if you run into something that you need my help on."
Mar 22, 2017 4:38 pm
Fritz shudders and nearly spills his drink. What is this world coming to? He spins back around in his seat and takes a long draw from the mug. Suddenly an idea strikes him. He finishes his drink and stands up in a slightly hunched over manner. He holds out the mug in front of him and laboriously hobbles around the room. "Alms! Alms for the poor!" He moves in the direction of the Orcus worshippers. "Alms for a poor priest."

The bartender watches you suspiciously, but does nothing as you begging your charade. The cultists, however, take notice as you draw near. A young man with rougish good looks palms a coin from the table and goes to plop it in your mug, though his attention is really on a cute girl. When he gets close, he spies your medallion to Apollo and lurches backward, confused.
Mar 22, 2017 5:09 pm
Fritz pauses. Oh Apollo, what have I gotten myself into? He extends the mug toward the rogueish man. "Something wrong sir? Perchance you find my body odor offensive? It's been quite a while since my last bath, I do apologize for this good sir."
Mar 22, 2017 7:53 pm
"What is the nature of your defenses in this tower?" Nar is clearly reluctant to leave the mage and crown unguarded when he knows that they are the main objective of the cultists.

Grok picks up the dagger and cradles it for a moment, before realizing this is a somewhat awkward thing to do and promptly hangs it back on his neck.
Mar 22, 2017 10:06 pm
Cyrind'ae picks up the diadem, looking at it quizzically.

"I assume this Veringvox is the Dracolich's name? So what are we to do once we control it, bring it here so you can destroy it?"
Mar 22, 2017 11:34 pm
Fritz

The boy chucks his silver coin at your mug, but it bounces on the edge and falls to the floor. "Take it and go," he hisses.

The Others

Helge smiles. "When I am awake, this tower is plenty secure, though I thank you for thinking of an old woman."
[ +- ] The Tower

You are on the mainfloor, so it is an easy jump to the ground, less than a man height, from the window. Winding stairs in the center of the room lead to the floors above.

To Cyrind'ae, she says, "No, leave that to me. I will take the Diadem to deal with the dragon. And indeed, Veringvox is its name, at least it was in life."
Mar 23, 2017 12:25 am
"So what are we to do then? Don't take it the wrong way, but so far your instructions have been rather vague..."
Mar 23, 2017 12:32 am
"We hunt cultists," says Jhishma conclusively, "but not before a little downtime."

The dragonborn beseeches, "Archmage, we need a place to rest and recoup, may we impose on you til morning? Then we'll be on our way, with renewed purpose."
Mar 23, 2017 1:00 am
Helge nods. "If you don't mind sleeping down here, we can find you bedrolls and blankets. The upstairs is more workshop than living area." The main floor is wide open and there is plenty of floor space.
Mar 23, 2017 6:15 am
Nar finds a nice corner and begins taking his spiked plate armor off -- just chest to his knees -- in case he is in a hurry to put it back on. Then he slumps against the wall and slides to the floor, anxious for a good replenishing sleep.

"Thank you, mage Helge."
Mar 23, 2017 9:46 am
Grok goes over and sits by Nar. "You have god, no? He good and right? It better if Sharpie was.. umm.. dead-eek-cat'edd.." He pauses a bit to chew over that word before continuing. "...to good god?"
Mar 23, 2017 1:29 pm
Cyrind'ae finds a place to rest as well, overhearing Grok's question to Nar.

"That's a good idea Nar, but right now we need to rest so we can help Fritz. I'm not sure Nar will have the time to work on your dagger right now. Maybe later today or tomorrow perhaps. Hmm speaking of Fritz, I hope he's doing okay."
Mar 23, 2017 3:01 pm
Grok nods absentmindedly while studying the dagger for a while, then gets on his feet and walks to the window. "Grok take first watch. Y'all rest now."
Mar 23, 2017 7:26 pm
Fritz pockets the coin and sets the mug on a table. Why did Nar ever have faith in my recon skills? He turns around before exiting. "May Apollo bless you kind fellows." He tries to take inventory of how many of the patrons are visibly taken aback by his mention of Apollo, and exits slowly.

Once outside, Fritz will look around the street, attempting to find a nearby vagrant.

The table as a whole (8 people) was taken aback, but how many were genuinely concerned and how many were just acting along, will need a Perception roll to gauge.

There are few people about, perhaps due to this fever plague. Nonetheless, vagrants are often the types with no where else to go. You find an old woman in an alleyway, sleeping in pile of old rags.
Mar 24, 2017 5:00 pm
Nar is a bit taken aback by Cyrind'ae's sudden interest in the dagger and how Nar spends his down time.
Before Grok moves away, Nar mentions, "That's a good idea, brother. But for now, Sharpie can be of use to us since it can help you identify the bad guys. Of course, if you want it, I'll do it now. Otherwise, I promise to dedicate it to Tyr just as soon as we're rid of this cult."

Fritz looks down at the sleeping woman. Here goes nothing. He pulls out the silver piece and sets it next to the woman, frowns and goes back into his pouch and pulls out another four gold pieces and plops them down next to her too. He reaches down and gathers up some of her rags and takes them to a dimly lit area where he has a good view of the entrance/exit to the tavern and sits down on the street. Frowning in disgust he does his best to cover himself in the assorted rags, in an attempt to blend in as a common vagrant.

Fritz

Few of the tavern patrons leave before the lights go out, meaning that most of them were staying there for the night. The common room floor is often a cheap place to sleep. Fritz watches those who leave but decides they are a few locals, brave or stupid enough to chance the plague for a cup of ale.

In the morning, you wake, uncomfortable and dirty, with a smell that you are certain may never leave. The tavern comes to life early on, with the smell of baking bread coming from within.

The Others

Helge and Old Man Sydell come down from the upstairs, and prepare a breakfast for all of you. Oatmeal with dried fruits and cream, unspiced sausages, pan biscuits, and tea. You notice that Owen disappeared during his watch with his bedroll and gear, and did not wake the next in order. You have all slept better than you have in some time.

Helge follows your questioning eyes and says, "Last night, I sent your friend Owen on a mission of import. He won't be back for several days." She shoulders her own bag, saying, "I'm off to face the dracolich. Syd will protect the tower, but I would feel better if you can assist him when you can. After you root out the cult in town, that will take precedence."

She draws a sigil on the floor with chalk, steps onto it, eyes each of you in turn, nods her head once, and vanishes with a small 'pop'.

Nibbling on a sausage scewered on Sharpie on one hand and sipping hot tea from another, Grok seems happy this morning. "Nice leaf-drink. Make belly warm."

Hearing Cyrind'ae's plight for haste, Grok downs one then the other and stands up. "Is ready. We go smash hornies?"
Mar 28, 2017 8:47 pm
Walking next to Grok, "My brother," he says conversationally, "as we cross town to get Fritz, see if Sharpie tells you about any, erm, hornies. We need to find their house."
Mar 29, 2017 7:23 am
"Sure thing, bro." Grok rests his hand on the dagger hilt hanging from his neck.
Mar 29, 2017 2:17 pm
Jhishma reminds everyone, "Hooda told us exactly where this house of cultists is. We'll go straight there after picking up Fritz and speaking to the Captain of the Watch about reinforcements."
Mar 30, 2017 8:29 pm
Fritz wakes up feeling and looking utterly disgusting. He looks at his rag covered self and can't help but curse himself for ever leaving the temple. He shrugs the rags off of himself. "I really hope the others have a bad sense of smell. Or a bath. Or a new body for me to enter. Good lord what was I thinking?"
Mar 31, 2017 2:10 pm
Nar nods to Jhishma thinking, Thats why he's the boss..."

"Lets go then. I'm concerned about Helge -- the sooner we deal with the cultists, the sooner we can try to assist her."
Mar 31, 2017 4:00 pm
You find Fritz near the prison, using minor magic to remove sordid strains from his attire. Together, you travel to the indicated den of ill repute.

From a distance it looks like any other of the buildings in the residential area. Across the street is a blacksmiths, and to either side, a tailor shop, and a cooper (barrel maker). The building is unmarked as to any potential business run from the home, though an empty sign post indicates that was not always so. The ground shows lots of traffic by the door, and a small girl sits on the stoop, attempting to repair a cloth doll that is losing stuffing.

The street is otherwise empty. You are about a hundred yards away and have not been spotted. There is space between the buildings, though not much.
Mar 31, 2017 11:34 pm
"Jishma, we can keep an eye on the house while you talk to the Captain of the Watch."

"Maybe it's time we helped stimulate the local economy. Grok, how would you like a fine set of clothes? Anyone need weapons sharpened or armor repaired by the blacksmith? Everyone, keep an eye out for all of the comings and goings in that house until Jhishma returns...and we have to find a way to get that little girl out of there before we go bat shit on the cultists."

To Grok, "What do you think, brother? Long coat, gold buttons, maybe some ruffles on the shirt?"

"Ooh, and a big, wide brimmed hat with a feather!"

"I guess I could always purchase a few more arrows, to replace those I used in the last few fights..."
Apr 1, 2017 11:54 am
More than a little puzzled about the shopping trip, but sensing some humor in Nar, Grok goes along. "Coat should have hood. What's 'rufflies'? Oh, hat sound good! Lots better than mask. Grok no wear mask anymore."
Apr 1, 2017 8:51 pm
Fritz nods at Nar. "Let me see what I can do about the girl." He walks over to her slowly, eyeing her doll. "Looks like your dolly has seen better days. Mind if I give fixing it a shot? If I'm unable to successfully fix it, I'll give you enough coin to buy a new one."
Apr 2, 2017 5:39 am
Nar does see the humor in the situation, but he's serious about getting nice clothes.
Why shouldn't Grok and I enjoy the high society life once in a while? After all, we are the protectors of that life.

He continues to keep watch while speaking to the tailor, making sure that his gold pouch is on prominent display.

"My brother and I are looking for fine formal wear -- we find ourselves spending more and more time with the Duke and wish to show him the proper respect." He looks around a bit and realizes that they probably have nothing that will fit their 6 1/2 foot frames. "Perhaps you can take our measurements and we'll come back for them. We'd like white silk shirts, black hosen, matching doublet & slops with removable sleeves -- gold with black threading for my brother, and black with gold threading for me. Oh yes, and hats!"
Apr 2, 2017 3:14 pm
Jhishma seeks the Captain of the Watch.

Assuming he finds him, Jhishma explains the situation, their work for the Duke and the judgement they're about to bring down on the house of cultists, as well as how to identify them. He even tells of Helge's part to take care of the dracolich that the cultists have stirred.

"...So, any help you can provide to surround the house and make sure none escape would be wise," says the silver dragonborn, "and do you or anyone else know of any tunnels or other secrets the cultists' house might have? It'd be a shame if we went to all this trouble and they just slipped out some unknown rat hole."
Apr 2, 2017 4:12 pm
"Oh, do you have any entertainer's outfit by any chance. Something a bard, troubadour, or minstrel would wear for formal representations."
Apr 2, 2017 7:19 pm
Nodding enthusiastically at Nar's list, Grok adds. "Big hat. With nice feather! He makes some gestures around his head indicating a decently wide brim.
Apr 2, 2017 7:24 pm
The rush of customers pleases the tailor. He takes all of your measurements, and suggests that he could have something ready in a couple of days. As Nar surmised, he doesn't have anything 'on the rack' that would fit Nar or Grok, but he does show you some of the material. As he flitters about, gathering items, you're able to keep watch from his window on the street.

Fritz repairs the girls doll with a simple cantrip. She looks up at him wide eyed, and says, "My mommy can do magics, too. But mostly she starts fires and I don't want fires on my dolly."

Cyrind'ae pokes about the blacksmith's shop. He was busy reading a book, feet perched on a stool, his blacksmith's forge tamped low. He greets you and puts the book away. You see that he has a number of hoops for barrels in various stages of readiness (probably for the cooper's nearby), and a number of horseshoes, knives, shovels, plowheads, and what have you. He does have a small box of arrow heads of various shapes, but he doesn't actually make arrows. He indicates that the cooper also does some fletching. Lastly, there are a number of weapons on display: swords, maces, metal-banded quarterstaffs, and a wicked looked axe that looks too fiendish to actually be of any practical use. "Intimidating, yes, but all those barbs catch during a fight," he explains with a shrug.
Apr 2, 2017 7:38 pm
The Captain agrees to your plan. He gathers a dozen guardsmen and sends them to contain. They will hang out in a tavern nearby but out of sight until you're ready for them.

OOC:
Any comings and goings in the house?
Once the measurements are complete, Nar leaves a deposit. "Thank you my good sir. We'll see you in a few days. By the way, what happened to the store that used to be next door between you and the cooper?"
Apr 3, 2017 1:39 am
Satisfied with the Captain's deployment, Jhishma leaves him with one last consideration, "I'll give my war horn one, long blast to signal that you need to take offensive action: engaging escapees and/or storming the house, etc. That's my signal for offence - I leave the assessment and course of action/response up to you.

"Conversely, I'll blow three short, quick blasts to signal for a retreat/evacuation - it means something has gone very, very bad and you need to get the hell outta here with as many citizens as possible."

Then the Knight of Winter's Fey Court regroups with his companions.

"Everyone ready? Let's go! Time to see if anyone's home..."
Apr 3, 2017 3:55 am
The guards agree to Jhishma's plan and signals.

The Tailor says that there has been no movement from the old store this morning.
You gather discretely around the entrance, the guards ready to move into place.
Apr 3, 2017 4:02 am

The game pause is totally my fault - no excuses.
Fritz and Jhishma escort the cultists outside as the back door warriors clear the kitchen. A quick search of the main floor finds several more make-shift dormitories of the other rooms. After brief skirmishes, the cultists are cleared out of the main floor.

The dining room is piled with all kinds of gear - ropes, lanterns, oil kegs, crossbows, clubs, and a box of alchemists fire. Clearly they have shenanigans planned.

From upstairs, you hear a number of crashes, and bangs. You sense that the cultists upstairs are fortifying the stairway. There is also the stairs to the cellar.

You burst into the room, weapons at the ready. You see a man staked out across the wooden floor within a faintly glowing arcane sigil. His head has been separated by a headman's axe still buried and quivering in the floor.

The axe wielder is backing away to the corner (where you were told a secret door lies), his hands gesturing feebly. Spittle flecks his face, a fanatical sheen burns in his eyes.

Most remarkably, however, is the glowing purple fissure at the far end of the room. Some of you will recall facing this exact occurrence on the streets of Marian Town - a portal to the nether realms from which demons poured!

Jhishma's swing barely hits, but the fiend is utterly crushed by it. It slumps to the floor and lives no more.
OOC:
FYI, that was a CR12 demon, but I had faith in you.
May 5, 2017 2:36 pm
"Praise the Quenn of Winter!" Jhishma exhales, and with icy breath he blows the sulphuric ash off the blade of his weapon. "Now, what in the hells is behind that secret door? Where did the ritual occur that opened this damned portal?"
May 5, 2017 5:36 pm
Nar looks at Jhishma, looks at the headless corpse staked to a glowing arcane symbol on the floor, looks back at Jhishma, points his maul and says, "Um, here?" then proceeds to force open a section of wall where the map said the secret door was.
OOC:
is the portal still glowing?

"Gaaah!" gasps the dragonborn, seeing the ritual sacrifice for the first time, "What the hell??? I totally missed that!"
OOC:
@Nar: that was hilarious!

Completely missing Jhishma's point, Nar hangs his head, "Yeah, we missed it by less than a minute. Poor guy."
OOC:
I couldn't resist!

Within the secret door, you find a stash of occult items. Of immediate interest is a bloodstained tome, open to a page that shows an amalgam to the ritual sacrifice just performed. Cyrind'ae (and perhaps others) is able to read the mystical writing, and discern that the portal will remain open for an hour, but can be closed early by a standard counterspell (like Dispel Magic), or by damaging it with radiant magic. Fritz is able to accomplish this with Sacred Flame, and the portal does indeed close.

The wizard that you subdued and killed is apparently Nilas Hornwick, a name that will mean little to any of you. You discover, by subduing the remainder of the cultists on the upper floor, that Nilas is the brains behind this adventure. With his death, his true plans remain obfuscated.

Nar is able to rededicate Grok's prehistoric blade, and he wears it proudly now that he knows it is become a force for good. In time, you all notice that which he had realized - the dagger's influence has increased his capacity for reason, perhaps even up to human average, if such a thing could be measured by a simple statistic.

Helge returns, haggard and worn, from her battle with the dracolich. She seems to have been aged by the ordeal, and immediately falls asleep in her home. Old Man Sydell thanks you on her behalf, and by his tone, you understand that he would spend her few remaining hours alone with his wife.

Your service to Marian Town, and to the Duchy of Harcourt, is rewarded once more, with feasting and accolades. The Duke attends Helge's funeral, extols her magnificent contributions to the defense of the land, and presents each of you with further recognition and rewards. Sometimes, only the bravest and most competent of heroes are all that stand behind civilisation and the forces of chaos and destruction.

You are certain, however, that the Duchy of Harcourt has not heard the last from Orcus, the Prince of the Undead.
Here lies the end of our adventure. I would like to thank all of you for bringing your characters so richly alive for the rest of us.
