Baern is a young dwarf, barely into his 30s. He wears a solid armor suit, but it is detailed all over with leaf and nature references. He isn't a very talkative type--seems to prefer trees to people--but he opens up occasionally.

Going to go with the Sage background to match my wizard apprentice upbringing, which will provide me with a few more INT based skills.
I'm just finalizing his equipment list (selling stuff so I can buy extra artisan's tools). He has a pair of Sending Stones, which I imagine will come in handy when Gunnar takes up sniping position. Will have to work out which one of you will hold the other stone.

SENDING STONES
Wondrous item, uncommon
Sending stones come in pairs, with each smooth stone
carved to match the other so the pairing is easily
recognized. While you touch one stone, you can use an
action to cast the sending spell from it. The target is the
bearer of the other stone. If no creature bears the other
stone, you know that fact as soon as you use the stone
and don't cast the spell.
Once sending is cast through the stones, they can't be
used again until the next dawn. If one of the stones in a
pair is destroyed, the other one becomes nonmagical.
DMG, page 199

Jabes, if I was playing a rogue (I almost did) that guy would be perfect.
This is tough! If I still had my copy of Photoshop from my sign-making days, I could cobble something together. I have the feeling that its absence is somehow tied to my ex packing my things a few years back.
Every happy-looking Dwarf looks drunk, psychotic, or mentally ill.
Like these:

I found a program close enough to Photoshop that I can tweak the one with the cards and beer with the lute on his back. I threw in a dulcimer, got rid of the cigar, and closed his mouth a bit. I'm trying to move his mouth so he looks more like he's smiling. His eyes still look crazy, but it's close enough. It's just an avatar, not central casting. I was just disappointed that nearly every drawing of a dwarf made them all look like angry assholes. None of them seemed to have what could pass for a genuine smile.

Like this:

At an early age, Baern simply left the cavernous halls of his clan, drawn to the forests under the sky. He ran in with an ancient druidic cult and stayed there, taking on elven customs as his own. Over time, his attunement to nature and relative lack of magical proficiency led him to be selected for an ancient and hallowed position--Primeval Guardian of the forests. He was gifted with the abilities this position affords, and for several years used them as he had been taught. However, something more called him to leave the sanctuary of the wooded expanse and set out upon this journey.

Phineas' small physique and happy-go-lucky nature often gets him mistaken for a Halfling, much to his father's embarrassment. He is a man torn between two worlds; although born to a long line of Wizards, he betrayed his father's lineage to pursue his natural affinity for nature. He left his clan to become a guardian of the wild and to pursue his connection with nature, yet still remained mindful of how he might still be of service his clan and his people. As he grows in power, he fights to maintain his connection to a culture that doesn't understand his choices.

BTW, my daughter named our cat Phineas. And, of course, we have another one named Ferb. Ferb got out when we moved six months ago, and we thought he was lost forever. He finally came home Saturday!

BTW, my daughter named our cat Phineas. And, of course, we have another one named Ferb. Ferb got out when we moved six months ago, and we thought he was lost forever. He finally came home Saturday!
As for the cat Ferb, it's not the first time he got out. We used to live on a farm and had three stray cats we rescued, Ferb and Stan Shortly (my daughter is awesome at naming animals) were feral kittens. Inside, they're the most loving and affectionate cats you can imagine. If they get out, though, they instantly revert to their feral nature, and it's almost impossible to get close to them. Until they haven't eaten for a while, that is.
When we moved six months ago, I didn't realize a window screen was loose in the new house until I saw the two cats wandering around outside. I kept seeing Stan Shortly once in a while, but never Ferb. It took Stan Shortly a couple months to get hungry enough for her to get close enough to grab, but Ferb never showed up. A week ago, we started getting glimpses of him. Finally, on Saturday he came close enough to grab him. He clawed the hell out of my hand, but I got him inside, got him a flea treatment, and checked him for worms before releasing him into gen pop. Within an hour, he was in my lap, purring like crazy, like he had never left. My daughter was at her mom's for the weekend and was in tears when I called her to tell her about it.
Lunitas said that our party was on a mission to aid Lord Reinhel against a hoarde of orcs in a time before the land was a barren, frozen wasteland. It likely was a land of forests and farms when we started our journey, but during the mission Lord Reinhel sent a wave of ice across his island in a fit of despair, transforming the island and freezing us in time.
I think the reason why Phineas would have embarked on this mission was to answer the call of his people. Phineas retained strong ties to his King and his people, even though they always don't understand or appreciate his choices. He was probably eager to demonstrate that his non-traditional form of magic could be useful to the Kingdom. I can see how the Dwarven leaders would send non-traditional Dwarves who are used to the surface world.
Perhaps you came on the mission for similar reasons? If you would rather have your character 'turn rogue' then maybe you had issues within the circle and saw this mission as an opportunity to leave? Either way, I think it's cool that we left together.
I think I will stick to the 'turning rogue' idea. The Circle did not want Baern to go, claiming that his role of Guardian bound him to the Forest. But, for reasons which Baern does not readily disclose, he left anyway, rebelling against the Circle.
But, we can still be from the same place! Adds a little depth, which is always good (in my opinion).
Ulfren works the forge for his king, and in times of war he is part of the spearhead of berserkers that charge into the front lines. He would have been sent on this mission purely to lend his fighting ability. Obviously I'm playing the part of an obedient soldier and willing volunteer that holds the king and clan higher than his own personal regard.
Sounds like Ulfren would be a natural choice to be this unit's commander if you're interested, CancerMan! How do you think he'd feel about commanding these odd Dwarves?
However! If no one else wants to be the "leader" and lunitar approves, I could rework Ulfren to be either a Fighter (Battle Master) or a Monk, either of which would fit the role more appropriately.
Really, anyone who wants to could be the leader. Alternatively, we could have had our commanding officer die in the blast.
I will get this ball rolling full swing soon, I'm exhausted from work tonight, but really want to pick through your stories to incorporate them into the story line. Great work everyone!
Since we're getting into backstories: From what I've read so far it sounds like the PC Gunnar would have had the most previous interaction with would be Ulfren.
When I created Gunnar I chose the Folk Hero background and the following trait: "Recruited into a lord’s army, I rose to leadership and was commended for my heroism." But I didn't intend for Gunnar to be the party's leader. The way I see it he was just a crack shot grunt who was at the right place at the right moment and was promoted to leadership despite his reluctance. I like the idea of the unit's leader dying in the blast. Will Gunnar step up and take charge? We'll have to wait and see.
He is a commendable fighter so that could tie him in with Ulfren and Gunnar.
For his free time, he is an entertainer so that ties him in with Billy the Bard.
He has experience with nature, so that ties him in with Baern and Phineas(?).
I like the blast leader idea too.
At 5th level, druids get access to the Conjure Animals spell. The way it works is that I pick the number of animals I want to summon, and then Lunitar would pick the animals with the corresponding CR, as described in the spell writeup.
Lunitar, how do you feel about this spell? Does it add a lot of work onto your plate?
I'll use this and randomize it:

If you were going for a fighter, perhaps I would go the druid route, thus getting a bit more caster-y, with a healing bent. However, if you went rogue, I probably would go paladin.
Let me know what your preference is, and yes, @Coach, please chime in with your thoughts.
When you cast the spell in this way, the familiar is a fey instead of a beast, and the familiar disappears after a number of hours equal to half your druid level.
Ulfren's normal job was as a blacksmith in a frontier outpost within the kingdom of King Thorrel Axelforge, whose domain is (or was) where we are now. I assume King Axelforge is definitely a familiar name to all of you.

Optional: Fighting Style:
* Blind Fighting: You have blindsight with a range of 10 feet. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn’t behind total cover, even if you’re blinded or in darkness. Moreover, you can see an invisible creature within that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you.
* Interception: When a creature you can see hits a target, other than you, within 5 feet of you with an attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage the target takes by 1d10 + your proficiency bonus (to a minimum of 0 damage). You must be wielding a shield or a simple or martial weapon to use this reaction.

to remain and guard the city as he had always done Knurd wanted the battle and rushed of to war anyway after the rest of the warriors there he fought with the rest of the Dwarfs Employing the techniques stolen from the drow.

That said, Ulfren could have known your father?
I was thinking something along the lines of a white-whiskered battle-priest - I scanned through the character creation thread and saw it mentioned that the dwarven gods might not be around any more, or might not answer. Is that going to affect divine magic generally? Would it be better for me to choose a different class?
I think as long as he could still cast spells, the idea of the gods being absent or silent is potentially quite interesting for a cleric. Perhaps he could draw his magic from within, or from the strength of the mountains, or something similar instead?

He wouldn't be a very loving or supportive grandfather, though. He's critical of everyone, most especially of himself. So don't get your hopes up for any joyful family reunions. ;)
I had the family name "Greatforge" pencilled in, did Knurd already have a family name you were using? Happy to adjust.
Also, let me know what you've established so far about your father / my son. I'm enjoying this idea!
He was a captain in the army and ordered me not to follow him to war telling me to stay and Protect the people of the city. I ignored him and so found my way into the battle.
Religion: Devotly followed Mordian
Relationships: Tried to befriend everyone in his unit but somewhat forgot about me with his constant training for battle. would he have forbade you from fighting in the battle?
Alignment: LG
He's a gruff, stern Forge Cleric and a firm believer in preserving the old ways. He was already 270 years old when he was frozen.
