Indeed, Jarveena recognizes the creatures as Troglodytes. You recall these foul humanoids cover their bodies in rotting flesh and excrement to produce a powerful toxic odor that at close range can send even seasoned warriors into fits of vomiting. In addition they are ferocious in melee combat, stabbing and biting in a flurry of activity. However, they are half blind in sunlight and they can't take many hits.
OOC:
HypCo, are you moving toward the Troglodytes or just to a new spot away from Jarveena? They are moving toward you at jogging pace and will also cover ground.

Instead of readying an attack outside of combat, we'll reward Ryte and Jarveena's stealth checks with a surprise round when combat begins. We will still use your attack roll when your turn begins.

OOC:
I was moving towards the Troglodytes. I made a slight edit to my previous post with this new knowledge, let me know if that is okay. I kept everything in case it isn't. My bow and rapier share the same modifiers and dice so could we use that for the surprise round?

Previous roll:
Readied attack (when/if needed) Use as surprise round? - (1d20+7, 1d8+4)
1d20+7 - ( 15 ) + 7 = 22
1d8+4 - ( 2 ) + 4 = 6

Jarveena waits two breaths after the man breaks cover to make sure he has drawn the troglodytes' attention, then she rises to one knee and launches two arrows of her own in quick succession before dropping back behind her hiding place.

Ygne groans for a few moments as Frick approaches. She struggles to get hands or feet underneath herself as she comes to. She blinks her eyes repeatedly, sensing that there is something off with her vision. "Frick?" She mumbles, her speech somewhat slurred and slow, "You jumped off the ship. You're crazy." She reaches a hand behind her head and winces as she touches the wound, gasping sharply and cursing. The pain brings her mind into focus and she gives her surroundings another look.

"Where are we?"

Rolls

Startin' off strong! - (3d6)

(334) = 10

Mar 2, 2017 1:58 pm
Frick smiles, "Crazy?" he considers for a moment, "Probably," then looks around, "I'm really not sure where we are, but we're not alone here. Something threw a dead body on top of me, but I'm not sure what it was."

"Don't get up too quickly, you got a pretty nasty bump on your head."
Mar 2, 2017 2:02 pm
Ygne hadn't considered that they weren't alone. It was baffling and surprising enough that they weren't even on the ocean anymore. "We should leave," Ygne suggests, rising a bit more before a ringing in her ears causes her to wince and groan again. She waits it out and then completes the movement to get her feet beneath her. "Are you okay?" She asks, brushing off any concern for her own wound.
Mar 2, 2017 2:52 pm
"Yeah, I'm fine. There's some gear over there if you want to help me look it over," Frick says, keeping a steadying hand on Ygne's shoulder until she seems steady enough, "First, though, I'm gonna take a look outside to make sure nothing's coming."

With that, he heads toward the entrance and takes a look outside.

JARVEENA AND RYTE

The Troglodytes are caught unawares. Ryte fires into their ranks hitting the lead runner square in the chest. As it gurgles in horror, the whole pod stops in confusion, their skin colouration instinctively shifting to a colour matching the sand and wreckage around them. Then, Jarveena makes use of Ryte's distraction; her arrows find their targets. She finishes off Ryte's target and a second target, both arrows skewering eye sockets.

Initiative order:
1. Jarveena
2. Ryte
3. Troglodyte with two daggers
4. Troglodyte with spear
5. Troglodyte with stone axe
6. Troglodyte with copper pot

Battlefield Features: Make use of these features narratively. If you do something cool with the features I might grant inspiration or a one-time advantage. Monsters can also make use of these features. For example, you don't have to ask me if there is cover available - just say you take cover behind debris.

1. Shipwreck Debris
2. Sand
3. Corpses
4. Brilliant Sun
OOC:
HypCo: changes noted. No problem.

Jabes & HypCo: We'll call that the surprise round, and you can start again. I assumed you killed off the top two creatures in the initiative order, reflecting you picking out the two most competent of their group. I'll post something in a separate thread about how we as a group will handle ambushes so everyone knows how to operate smoothly and not make just-in-case rolls - I take it from the characters you have built that this will be a common tactic!

Jabes: I'm going to narrate every kill you do with sharpshooting as a magnificent shot, such as through the eye. Feel free to call that shot. Also, you can't hide again this round because you used your actions to attack and hiding costs an action. Until you get a second level of rogue, you can't hide as a bonus action.

ELSPA

You reach the stone berm. At this range you can tell it is clearly man made; there are even cylindrical stone pilings that look like they might have supported a large dock here at one point in time, but the planks have long rotted away.

You climb over the stones, which provide good cover as you peer on the other side. This section of beach is also checkered with debris and bodies, but there are creatures busying themselves with hauling corpses from the beach up to the jungle. Four reptilian creatures are on the beach simultaneously looting the bodies and dragging them up to the edge of the jungle. At the edge of the jungle, another six creatures are hacking off the heads from a pile of bodies in front of a shallow cave, which looks like is one of several along the jungle's edge. There is a pile of valuables beside a neatly stacked pyramid of decapitated heads.

The looting trio is 50 feet away from you, and the decapitating trio is 100 feet away from you.
OOC:
You can roll a DC 13 nature check to see if you know these are Troglodytes too.

Enjoy your pewter cup. Feel free to add narrative details to it, such as a slogan printed on the side or special shape.

FRICK AND YGNE

Frick gingerly peaks his head outside of the cave. You are greeted with the sounds of surf and beach and birds, and a bit of fresh air that relieves the stench of death that you've been breathing in for the past while. The beach is covered in wreckage and four reptilian creatures busy themselves with looting bodies and dragging them up to edge of the jungle. Another group of six are at the edge in front of a cave that looks similar to yours, except the ground is covered in blood. They are busy chopping off the heads of the corpses with primitive stone tools.

Between you and the head choppers, there are another 2 caves, and another two caves in the opposite direction as well (six total).

The head choppers are 20 feet away from you, while the looting party is 100 feet away.
OOC:
Frick can also roll a DC 13 nature check to see if he recognizes these as Troglodytes.
Mar 2, 2017 7:23 pm
OOC:
For clarification, are there 10 total creatures (4 on beach 50' away, 6 by cave 100' away), or 6 total (3 on beach 50' away, 3 by cave 100' away)?
Elspa remains hunkered down by the stones, observing the creatures and their behavior. The feral instinct in her broils at the possible desecration of her shipmates, but the predator within tempers the bloodlust with the acknowledgement of these reptilians' greater numbers. Survival includes knowing when to run.

There are 10 total creatures (that you don't recognize). 4 on beach 50' away, 6 by cave 100' away, as you said. They are lightly armoured and appear to have primitive melee weapons only - no sign of spears or bows.
Mar 2, 2017 10:12 pm
Ygne rises, wincing against the pain in her head once more as she struggles to keep her balance. She shuffles over toward where Frick is, doing a quick check of herself to make sure she still has her weapons and other gear. "Anything?" She mumbles, rubbing her palm against her right eye.

The barbarian has to get past these creatures, but it is foolish to charge without first looking for an angle of attack. Having decided that she will need to engage, Elspa attempts to find a way to get closer to the four individuals on the beach without being detected, until she is about 40 feet away.

ELSPA, FRICK AND YGNE
CancerMan says:
Elspa attempts to find a way to get closer to the four individuals on the beach without being detected, until she is about 40 feet away.
Elspa, you slide over the rocks and try to be a silent as you can. There are a few times when you are convinced they would spot you, but the seem oblivious. Either they are too busy with their task to pay attention or they have terrible eyesight.

Frick, however, does not have terrible eyesight and plainly sees a strapping young woman sneaking along the wreckage toward the looters.

Elspa is now within 40 feet of the gang of looters, and 100 feet from the head choppers by the jungle.
Mar 3, 2017 12:10 am
Spotting something metallic and shiny among one of the debris piles (a breastplate or small shield perhaps?), and judging that the sunlight would reflect blindingly off it and into the troglodytes' eyes, Jarveena pops up and sprints across the shimmering sand to take up position behind the pile of flotsam. She takes aim at the troglodyte spearman's throat, and lets fly her arrow.

The polished shield indeed blinds the monster long enough for you to put an arrow in its throat. It falls dead, and the sand begins to turn red all around its corpse.

Ryte drops his bow onto the sunburnt sands, grasping both his rapiers by the hilt and drawing them in one swift motion. Taking a sideways stance, he moves forward, twirling one of the rapiers in front while keeping the other poised back, waiting to strike akin to a scorpion. "Come now, bottom feeders, my swords hunger."
OOC:
Attacking the one with the two daggers, if I manage to finish it off, I'll move onto the axe wielder.
