Successful escape by Talius. No Grapple.
May 25, 2017 5:16 pm
Despite his loathing for the witchcraft he is witnessing, Ivor feels a stirring in his loins fueled by both the bloodletting and the vision of unbridled lust standing before him. With difficulty, tears his gaze away from the woman, and with only a glance in Kray's direction, hurriedly follows where Thorn went.

A flood of emotions clouds Talius' judgement for a second while he considers swimming back into the water, you can still save him, he thinks to himself. He pushes that thought out of his mind as he slips away from the Bear and Goat.
OOC:
Im going to take the disengage action, fight defensively, take out my shield as I run toward Kray and the shoreline.

C'mon Talius, Move!

Kray steadies after the hit on the gator. A methodical reflex reloads his bow, string drawn back, eyes scanning the water for targets.

Line up and die bastards!

Ready attack for Overwatch again. What's the distance to shore for Talius? And yeah Ox, you're getting those 20's in good spots for sure. Fates seem to like you.

Talius
BR9

Swimming. Disengage. in the water. Fight Defensively. Using shield. In the water. What kind of armor is Talius swimming in?
OOC:
Ox, bro. I'm going to shift into total Dick DM mode, late 1980s style. I know opening myself up for Resentment Reactions. Going to Fail Save vs. Player Revolt. But still...

Shield. Swung over the shoulder to swim out there. Now pulled back off of the shoulder, in the water, to bear against underwater opponents. Still expecting to make normal swim movement per round? I'm not sure, but maybe wearing some sort of armor? Chain shirt? I could be wrong about that. Let me know.

I've been sending hints on this for a while now. At some point, clinging to the stat AC adjustment just isn't going to work. Equipment in the water pretty much changes from asset to liability. It's hard to use a shield in the normal way in water plus it's next to impossible to swim with one.

This round, I'll say yes: Talius moves full Swim movement, 15 feet towards the shoreline. So he transitions from 65' to 50'. A successful Disengage, so he does not provoke Reaction Opportunity Attacks.

But next round, I'm going to shift to brutal truth - - that even Michael Phelps would finish last at a 11-year-old girls' rec swim meet if he was trying to do the 100 meter wearing metal armor, boots, med bag, and slogging a shield through the water in his left hand.

Time to make the call:
1) +1 AC for 5' Movement per round
2) +2 AC for 0' Movement per round
3) Keep shield over back, 0 AC adjustment, 10' Movement per round.
4) Ditch the shield. Swim like hell. Full movement 15' per round, and take the implications.

Thanks for seeing my side of this, good buddy.

All the best,
DM "Total Dickhead" J

Ivor
BR9 - Round 10 complete

Ivor moves through the deck door and into the old cabin. He sees a cluttered domicile, odds and ends stacked everywhere on tables and cabinets - a witch's abode.

He makes his way through the tight squeezes, around the furniture, to the north side of the house. He exits a door that steps out onto another deck, opposite side of the cabin. But this deck is only slightly off of the ground. (With the slant of the land, the north side of the house is ground level but the south side of the house has the low gully with the high deck.)

Ivor is back outside, down the stairs of the north deck, and on the ground. Ahead (north) is a lower stretch of land, a clearing that has some sort of tool shed about 15 yards away. Past that, the ground rises again, and the foliage and undergrowth gets thicker. Beyond this small ridge, there are larger trees - more of the swamp forest.

To the left of the shed, there is a small path, that leads up and over a low spot in the ridge. The trail leads out into the forest.

Even further off to the left, through the bushes and trees, the lake can be seen in the distance.

Away from the noise of battle, Ivor hears the chirps and tweets of the swamp life.

Kray
BR9

Kray makes his approach all the way down to reach the waterline. He is standing near the cabin deck, at the base. Some of the support beams are on the ground, the last few are built out over the water. Part of the deck extends out over the water beyond Kray on the ground. Though he cannot see them now, the last Kray saw of Ivor and the woman, they were above him on the deck.

Kray searches vigilantly for a target. That last hit against the alligator made it flinch pretty bad. Kray holds steady, but does not see the Alligator again. The quiet moments of holding the string of the bow back begin to be unnerving.

Kray sees Talius, 65' out into the water away from the dry ground at first. Talius loops his heavy shield off of his back and holds it back defensively, as if protecting himself against opponents that he can see in the water but Kray cannot. Talius covers some distance, perhaps 15'. Talius is not about 50' from the shore.

Behind Talius, Kray sees the water turning red.

Talius swims with all of his might towards Kray. He's not that far away, but it seems like a great distance given the dreadful tension of the scene.

OOC:
Ivor is through Round 10. Have to stall for a sec on round progress, but Jabes you can send anything you want to delve deeper in as Ivor explores through the back yard exploring for Thorn.

X, same ish, bro. Sorry. Close now though, right?

OOC:
I misread your post a little while ago, I thought I was 25' from the shoreline hence the taking out the shield. I reread and saw that I'm 65' from the shoreline - I had no idea we were that far out. So, with that in mind, I'm going to keep the shield on my back and make my stand.
OOC:
My athletics is +6 so i will only roll for the contested 26. I'm going to add my reaction to riposte the bear for the missed short sword attack and then attack with hammer and hand axe on the bear
OOC:
So Im double grappled. This is not looking good.

Okay... staying on this beach is looking just as suicidal as going into the water. Talius is 65' out, in heavy armor, with guys who can swim well. It seems like Talius is going to be smoked and then I'm battling on the shore with the Water Kill Party, while Kray is at 7 hp. All they gotta do is stay submerged after icing Talius and swim up to shore.

Ox, hate to say it man, but this is grim. I'm not sure I can help you. I remember J giving us the lowdown on underwater combat, telling us about Bat Hannoc fighting style and their preference for underwater killing. IIRC, I don't think Goat and Bear are that close to going down either.

Is Rutcrana still on the deck (doing a ritual it would seem)?
May 26, 2017 12:54 pm
OOC:
Yup, I'm fucked haha! Me and CB will come back with a vengeance.
May 26, 2017 1:57 pm
OOC:
Yeah Rutcrana's still doing her thing. I'm hoping that, plus Ivor finding and shanking Fingol, will  mess with the Hive's mojo -- if not kill them outright.

Will update Rutcranna. Yes. She's trying something on the deck.
May 26, 2017 9:20 pm
Suddenly it hit Kray light a bolt of lightning. Thoughts flitted through his mind in the space of a heartbeat. He couldn't save Talius, no more than Talius could save Qiu. He might, however, be able to help Ivor and Thorn. His mind reflexively called on his training and experience as a Decanus in House Mercon. They needed to regroup and form strength in force.

Perhaps Rutcrana could be of some help? She didn't shy away from Bird when she stabbed him on the deck, and although her current behavior seemed strange to Kray, it somehow reminded him of the medicine man he knew in the Mozamyah jungle, all those years ago. Was she truly a witch?

Without warning, the words of his Uncle Rison flashed through his mind, coming to surface from the dark depths of memory.

"Logic and reason must always rule, Kray. Without them, we are lost, as is the world in dire consequence. Never allow emotion to rule. In its stead, wet the cold steel of logic with the warm blood of your heart's weakness. Master this simple truth and master the world around you."

It had been almost ten years since he had heard those words, a late night conversation he'd had with Uncle Rison shortly after returning to House Mercon from two years in the Mozamyah Jungle, in the Gaerimundi Isles, living with the natives, a time that now seemed like a dream he'd had long ago.

Kray had been floundering still, lost and empty, eager for death but unable to take his own life, mourning the loss of his Gaerimundi wife and their newborn son by filling the void with whores, narcotics, the bottle, and an unyielding thirst for indiscriminately cruel violence. In those times his emotions ruled as king in the court of his mind, and it was Uncle Rison who had pulled him out of it, finding Kray one night in the most depraved of slums, wasting away in a sea of debauchery. Forcing Kray by Mercon armed escort, he confined him to guest quarters on Rison's estate, St. Antiphon House in Poyam.

Whether Rison had been directed by Habbiacus, done so with the one shred of compassion he might possess, or simply because he knew helping Kray would be helping himself, Kray couldn't be sure. Knowing Rison, Kray suspected the latter was, at the very least, part of it. Regardless, Kray's extended stay as a 'guest' at St. Antiphon brought him back to his senses, allowing him to clean up and find new direction under the watchful eye and iron guidance of Rison. It was during this time that Kray learned the ruthless art and power of cold and methodical calculation, allowing it to exist side by side with the emptiness that still lingered within, smaller now, but still there.

His mind snapped back into the present. Only the Fates can save Talius now.

Kray knew there was really only one course of action to take. Although he loathed the truth of it, only one option remained that made any tactical sense.

Wet the cold steel of logic with the warm blood of your heart's weakness.

His body resisted for a moment, then Kray forced the movement through steely resolve, crushing the wayward sentiment of emotion, unwelcome as it was. With one last look toward Talius, Kray turned and sprinted toward the deck and Rutcrana, where he had last seen Ivor.

Yeah, Talius really seems fucked.

Hoping Kray is in time to make a difference somewhere, he's going to run (Dashing action) for the deck where Rutcrana is, where Ivor was before he went inside, calling out to him along the way in an effort to find him.
