Game: Meet Me in Phandalin

Jun 17, 2017 4:51 am
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseerker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post on Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of busines."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
OOC:
Feel free to introduce your characters and come up with how you met this dwarf patron, Gundren Rockseeker. Also, come up with a marching order. Who is where, who is driving the wagon of supplies?

And most importantly, what do you do?

OOC:
I would first like to welcome one Valius Aldaarn, a well dressed high elven noble from Neverwinter. Despite his noble status he much prefers the company of those without a silver spoon up their behind, they tend to be more fun. This lead to him meeting Gundren on night in a tavern and being offered this job.
Valius will be sat near the front of the wagon keeping an eye on the road ahead. Conversing with his travelling companions.

OOC:
Greetings fellow travelers. My name is Ruthann Stormborn, once a soldier turned monk. I spent 4 yrs in the military, ending as an officer, where I lost a brother and many comrades. After a disastrous battle where our forces were nearly wiped out, those of us who remained, including myself and Mel returned to our camp. I was blamed for the disaster, branded a deserter, and thrown in prison. A little while later, a passing monk negotiated my release and I began my training under his care.
I happened to run into Mel and she told me about what really happened at the battle and that she discovered later who had been blamed and punished for her failures. In a rage I struck her in the face and stormed out of the establishment.
After I finished my training with the monk, I returned, where I again met Mel. We talked and hashed out our differences; deciding instead to band together since we couldn't return home and had no one else to rely on. We formed a kind of kinship and have stayed together since. Mel told me about the ad on the notice board for an escort job and we decided to check it out. We met up with the ones interested parties and began our trip.
Ruthann will be driving the cart and keeping an eye on the road ahead.

My name is Mel, I am from a small village southeast of Baldur's Gate. I joined the military at 16 and rose quickly as I had been training my whole life for this. Grewing up in a privileged life was great. Everything changed when a mistake of pride and ambition caused a lot of soldiers lives. Ruthann was among the ones that survived the disaster. My pride was too great that I lied about what action I took during a skirmish and in turn Ruthann was blamed.
I later found out what had happened to Ruthann after the incident and felt horrible guilt. I soon turned to religion to better myself.
I made my way to Neverwinter to learn as I could not stay home because of my actions. I met Ruthann there by chance and told him of my actions. He took it better than I expected. We began meeting from time to time we both were training. We formed a bond after many months.
I told him of a escort job and that is were we met with the rest of you all.
I will be in the shotgun seat as walking all this distance is not ok with me.

OOC:
Greetings fellow travelers. I am Laucain Laidon, a Wood Elf Ranger, from Agatha. As the youngest of three to a well know blacksmith, I never enjoyed tending to my fathers shop while my older brothers, both in the military, leave the city when needed. Prior to leaving his home in search of a better life, I had gotten into an argument with my family and left on bad terms. My travels led me to Gundren where I had been offered a job to good to refuse.
I will be off to the right of the wagon if it isn't any trouble.

Very nice so far.
You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

I tell Ruthann to stop. "Hold brother. Let me check this out first." I drop down and draw my shield and sword. Slowly I head to the horses.

I can see the thread between the fucking worlds.

[ +- ] That's more disadvantage on you for rubbing it in, Mr. See-threads-between-worlds.
You near the horses and you instantly identify them as the horses that belonged to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. They've been dead about a day, and it's clear that arrows killed the horses. The saddlebags have been looted. Nearby lies an empty leather map case.

As you observe the carnage, you hear a branch snap in the thicket above followed immediately by a goblin sliding down the embankment and landing at your feet, prone.
OOC:
The way I do initiative for the games I run is molded to better fit the PbP nature. Instead of asking everyone to roll initiative and waiting a day to just determine combat order, I will roll your initiative to speed things up; this will be the only roll of yours that I roll for you.

Another thing that differs is you may act in which ever order you please within your initiative group.

Those bold may act now:
Ruthann
Laucain
Valius
Mel

Goblins

For example: even though Mel is near the bottom, because she is before the monster, she doesn't have to wait for Ruthann to finish his turn. Again, this is a change from the normal way in order to help speed up PbP and adjust to people's different posting availability.

Rolls

Ruthann, Laucain - (1d20+4, 1d20+4)

1d20+4 : (19) + 4 = 23

1d20+4 : (13) + 4 = 17

Mel - (1d20+1)

(8) + 1 = 9

Valius - (1d20+3)

(15) + 3 = 18

Goblins - (1d20+2)

(1) + 2 = 3

Jun 22, 2017 9:23 am
Seeing the goblin fall at my feet. "This day is not yours my dear goblin." I take a huge swing at its head.

Rolls

Attack n Damage on goblin - (1d20+4, 1d8+2)

1d20+4 : (3) + 4 = 7

1d8+2 : (5) + 2 = 7

Shit yeah, Advantage - (1d20+4)

(2) + 4 = 6

Jun 22, 2017 9:27 am
Seeing the Goblin fall towards us Valius takes a look around knowing goblins are like rats; where there is one, there is many.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

Jun 22, 2017 9:34 am
After seeing Mel miss the goblin completely, I take out my longbow and fire an arrow. "I got this Mel!"

OOC:
Oops, I sometimes get ahead of myself and forget to post thing. Mel would of spotted those as well and more than likely called them out. Valius can still take his turn, I won't count the perception check against him.

OOC:
The goblin is prone, so he'd be at disadvantage (straight roll because ranger advantage), you'd be at advantage.

Also, unless I'm missing something, Laucin's damage modifier should only be +4.

Valius seeing other goblins around would fire off a magic missile at one that looks although it may be attempting a ranged shot on us.

Rolls

Magic Missile (Force) - (1d4+1, 1d4+1, 1d4+1)

1d4+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

1d4+1 : (1) + 1 = 2

1d4+1 : (4) + 1 = 5
