Game: Meet Me in Phandalin

Jun 17, 2017 4:51 am
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseerker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post on Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of busines."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
OOC:
Feel free to introduce your characters and come up with how you met this dwarf patron, Gundren Rockseeker. Also, come up with a marching order. Who is where, who is driving the wagon of supplies?

And most importantly, what do you do?
Jun 21, 2017 12:29 pm
OOC:
I would first like to welcome one Valius Aldaarn, a well dressed high elven noble from Neverwinter. Despite his noble status he much prefers the company of those without a silver spoon up their behind, they tend to be more fun. This lead to him meeting Gundren on night in a tavern and being offered this job.
Valius will be sat near the front of the wagon keeping an eye on the road ahead. Conversing with his travelling companions.

OOC:
Greetings fellow travelers. My name is Ruthann Stormborn, once a soldier turned monk. I spent 4 yrs in the military, ending as an officer, where I lost a brother and many comrades. After a disastrous battle where our forces were nearly wiped out, those of us who remained, including myself and Mel returned to our camp. I was blamed for the disaster, branded a deserter, and thrown in prison. A little while later, a passing monk negotiated my release and I began my training under his care.
I happened to run into Mel and she told me about what really happened at the battle and that she discovered later who had been blamed and punished for her failures. In a rage I struck her in the face and stormed out of the establishment.
After I finished my training with the monk, I returned, where I again met Mel. We talked and hashed out our differences; deciding instead to band together since we couldn't return home and had no one else to rely on. We formed a kind of kinship and have stayed together since. Mel told me about the ad on the notice board for an escort job and we decided to check it out. We met up with the ones interested parties and began our trip.
Ruthann will be driving the cart and keeping an eye on the road ahead.

OOC:
My name is Mel, I am from a small village southeast of Baldur's Gate. I joined the military at 16 and rose quickly as I had been training my whole life for this. Grewing up in a privileged life was great. Everything changed when a mistake of pride and ambition caused a lot of soldiers lives. Ruthann was among the ones that survived the disaster. My pride was too great that I lied about what action I took during a skirmish and in turn Ruthann was blamed.
I later found out what had happened to Ruthann after the incident and felt horrible guilt. I soon turned to religion to better myself.
I made my way to Neverwinter to learn as I could not stay home because of my actions. I met Ruthann there by chance and told him of my actions. He took it better than I expected. We began meeting from time to time we both were training. We formed a bond after many months.
I told him of a escort job and that is were we met with the rest of you all.
I will be in the shotgun seat as walking all this distance is not ok with me.

OOC:
Greetings fellow travelers. I am Laucain Laidon, a Wood Elf Ranger, from Agatha. As the youngest of three to a well know blacksmith, I never enjoyed tending to my fathers shop while my older brothers, both in the military, leave the city when needed. Prior to leaving his home in search of a better life, I had gotten into an argument with my family and left on bad terms. My travels led me to Gundren where I had been offered a job to good to refuse.
I will be off to the right of the wagon if it isn't any trouble.

OOC:
Very nice so far.
You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

[ +- ] That's more disadvantage on you for rubbing it in, Mr. See-threads-between-worlds.
You near the horses and you instantly identify them as the horses that belonged to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. They've been dead about a day, and it's clear that arrows killed the horses. The saddlebags have been looted. Nearby lies an empty leather map case.

As you observe the carnage, you hear a branch snap in the thicket above followed immediately by a goblin sliding down the embankment and landing at your feet, prone.
OOC:
The way I do initiative for the games I run is molded to better fit the PbP nature. Instead of asking everyone to roll initiative and waiting a day to just determine combat order, I will roll your initiative to speed things up; this will be the only roll of yours that I roll for you.

Another thing that differs is you may act in which ever order you please within your initiative group.

Those bold may act now:
Ruthann
Laucain
Valius
Mel

Goblins

For example: even though Mel is near the bottom, because she is before the monster, she doesn't have to wait for Ruthann to finish his turn. Again, this is a change from the normal way in order to help speed up PbP and adjust to people's different posting availability.

OOC:
The goblin is prone, so he'd be at disadvantage (straight roll because ranger advantage), you'd be at advantage.

Also, unless I'm missing something, Laucin's damage modifier should only be +4.

Mel stands above the easy target but the pitiful look of it, you can't help but feel a bit sorry for it; the blow slams into the ground on the side of it. Laucain's arrow sails through the air, not taking trajectory into effect, the arrow lands right by the side on the prone goblin. Valius sends three glowing darts into the thicket, which produce three separate impacts followed by a horrid screech of pain as a lifeless goblin falls down from the embankment.
Jun 22, 2017 11:51 am
As we see the horses I stop the cart and grab my spear. After the goblin tumbles down in front of Mel and both his and Laucian's attacks miss I take cover behind the front seat. I yell out to Mel, "How could you miss? he gave you the perfect opportunity!"
Following Valius' example I also try to check for more goblins.

Jun 22, 2017 1:02 pm
In that case, I will charge toward the nearest goblin other than the one by Mel and attack with my spear with both hands. And if that doesn't kill him or there is another goblin close enough I will also take a bonus action to make an unarmed strike.

Ruthann runs up the embankment and cleanly thrusts his spear through the goblins abdomen. It lets out a pained squeal before Ruthann spins around and brings his foot against the goblins head; the goblins squeal is silenced instantly and replaced with a loud crack as it's head is split open.

The goblin prone on the ground, stands and swings it scimitar at Mel, resounding in a pitiful clang against her armor. The remaining one in the thicket, vanishes.

Seeing laucain being rather lacklustre in his attempts, Valius shakes his head."Laucain, if I may interject, I see what you're trying to do but I doubt you'll get anything from politeness with a goblin. A show of force ought to get what we need"

Rhuthann, you find, two goblin-sized scimitars, 1 goblin-sized bow with 7 goblin-sized arrows, a pouch filled with toenails and fingernails, 3 cp, a boiled egg, and a slightly rotted, half-eaten apple.

The goblin stares up at Laucain with wide eyes, letting out horrible gasps as Mel's sword digs into it
[ +- ] Goblin
It's eyes lull back as it's breathing stops.

Valius, while you don't find the goblin that ran, you do find a trail hidden behind the thicket on the north side of the road that lead northwest. You notice that about a dozen goblins have come and gone along the trail, as well as signs of two human-sized bodies being hauled away from the ambush site.

As Ruthann walks over to assist Mel with dragging the horses off the road, he calls out to Laucain, "Did you find out anything useful from our dead friend there?" "You can have your weapon back Mel... This one didn't want to talk. I agree with Valius about taking out the hydra. As dangerous as it sounds, the roads would be safer."
Jun 24, 2017 6:07 am
Ruthann says to Laucain, If we decide to try to deal with the goblins or whatever else we may find, then what are we going to do with the cart in the meantime? I agree that we should try to prevent ambushes from happening to others, but we were also hired to deliver the cart. He calls out to Valius, "What did you see beyond the bushes, Valius?"
Jun 24, 2017 9:03 am
Tracks from the looks of it, fair few goblins passing through. And unfortunately a couple of dragging marks, couple of bodies would be my guess. Valius looks eager to deal with all of this. As for the cart, maybe if we bring it as far as we can before tying it off, doubt we'll be gone for too long.
Jun 24, 2017 9:08 am
Mel stands from checking the goblin. "What if two of us go off to checl the drag marks while the other two get the wagon secured?" She grabs the goblins arm and drags it to where the other bodies are.
Jun 24, 2017 9:34 am

Perception check to try to hide the cart and horses (if necessary) - (1d20+4)

Jun 24, 2017 2:35 pm
OOC:
The wagon would be easy enough to steer off the trail but the hiding is a different story. If you want to take this path, explain how you are hiding it and I will roll for it's stealth depending on that and how many people are helping you.

The goblin path is littered with stray roots that jut out from the ground and low branches. If you want to take this path, I'd have you roll a land vehicle check (To see if you can control the oxen well enough to continue down this difficult path and maintain the wagon while doing it).
Jun 24, 2017 3:03 pm
OOC:
How do I do this check? 1d20+what?
Jun 24, 2017 3:19 pm
Looking into the wagon, you find an assortment of mining supplies and food; a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks, and crowbars (about a dozen each), and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about 50 flasks in volume).
OOC:
The path is behind a thicket up an embankment; while it isn't hard to walk up and down the embankment alone, it would prove difficult to try and get the oxen up it along with the wagon. The pathway is carved into the surrounding forest, which bleeds onto the path every now and then. If you are looking to hide the wagon and oxen along the path, I'd ask to have you roll land vehicle (To see if you could make it up the embankment). It is most likely a more difficult check than hiding it on the main road but it would most likely be safer, in the event of something coming across it.

The main road has a deep forest bordering it, your typical trees can be found here, along with: various sized bushes, fallen branches, leaves, and the very rare, occasional dropped fruit can be found among the forest floor.
Jun 24, 2017 6:17 pm
Dropping the body she turns to Ruthann. "If we are taking the cart to hide it why not just the rest of the way to Phan...Phandev...Phamdeline...whatever that place is. We cam ask about the goblins there if you really feel bad about Gungersen and Sildern." She hops up with Ruthann in her shotgun position.

Ruthann punches her in the arm lightly and says, "Oh come on Mel. We are in a party. Each of us has an opinion. 'Sometimes' (finger quotes) other people's ideas are better than yours." He calls up to Valius, "I know you're itching to kill some goblins, but let's deliver the cart and try to get some more information first. We will return afterwards. Laucain, go ahead and mark the trail and let's continue."
Jun 25, 2017 4:20 pm
Valius shakes his head, worried for the fate of whoever got taken. Friend, it's not the killing that I'm wanting, it's the fact they have two bodies with them, they could still be alive and may not be if we don't make haste. "I'll make it up to you later, somehow. I promise." Ruthann gives her a thumbs up and a corny grin. "Each of us has a valid point for what to do here. Deliver the goods like we were hired to do and earn some money (while potentially allowing 2 men to die), or hide the cart and try to deal with these goblin threat and then deliver the cart (potentially saving 2 lives). Plus if we save Gundren, he will make sure we get paid, and possibly a bonus, anyways."

Digs a small hole and puts a torch in it to mark the location. Yelling out to the rest of the party "Aren't we on a deadline to deliver the goods? If so, the sooner we deliver everything, the sooner we can come back and see if Gundren and Sildar are still alive." Finishing up with setting up the marker, I head over to the bushes to pull them back.
Jun 25, 2017 8:18 pm
"The cart is already halfway up, we are not changing direction now." She walks a few feet ahead. "I'll scout ahead and see what I can see. Loucage, come with me. Your skills my be of some use. Valius, watch the cart with my brother" She turn to walk then shouts back at Valius. "And he better be alive when I get back." She walks off.

For the better part of 10 minutes, the oxen struggle with pulling the wagon up the embankment before finally gaining purchase at the top; the rest of the trek finishes rather quickly and you find yourself at the top of the embankment, part way into the hidden path.

There isn't a 'in case my roll is better' in this situation. The trail is too thin and narrow to benefit off two people looking, who ever is behind has most of their vision blocked by the person in front. As of right now, going off the previous posts, Mel was/is leading.

After Mel and Laucain head off down the path, Ruthann gathers any loose brush on the edges of the path to place behind the cart as extra camouflage from the trail. He also takes his rope and tethers the oxen to a tree near some undergrowth or grass so they can graze. When this is done, he steps back out of the trees and retrieves the torch that Laucain put in the ground to mark the path. We don't need this here anymore if we aren't going to town first. He then adds the torch to his pack and returns to the cart.
Ruthann looks to Valius, "Should we do anything else before we catch up with the others?"

About 10 minutes pass with nothing eventful to report before you think you see something dash in the forest but it turns to just be a bird. Jun 27, 2017 1:03 pm
Quick on your feet before anything else is able to happen, you are already a couple feet back. You watch as the floor in front of you falls into a 6 foot wide, 10 foot deep hole.

You spot no further traps after the disabled snare trap, you see Mel and Laucain about 100 feet up the path.
Jun 27, 2017 2:04 pm
Not at all my friend see I focus mainly on evocation, mastery of the elements if you will. I'll go more in depth some other time but let's catch up to the others. Valius looks please to have had someone show interest and you can tell he could go on for hours should the situation be any different.

As Laucain jumps back he knocks into Mel. "What curse has befallen you that you must leap into me?"
GreyRook says:
"Be careful up here. The ground had collapsed. Last thing we need is for someone to fall in."
She look at where Laucain is addressing. "That would be...hey, is that a crack at me. You do best to watch that tongue of yours." She takes a few steps back and then leaps across the pit. Once across she turns to Laucain. "Let's go Louking, we need... Oh look there is Valius and my brother."

As we get closer Ruthann says, "Is everything ok up there? We saw that snare trap further back and..... is that a pit in the middle of the path?"
Ruthann walks closer and carefully looks into the pit. "I'm glad we didn't find you both down there." He looks up at Mel and says, "Are you well Sister?"
Jun 28, 2017 7:18 am
"Yes brother. I was able to avoid the pit and jump over. It is not far. Come." She gesture for Ruthann to jump over.
Jun 28, 2017 8:23 am
Valius not one for athletics looks to see if there is anyway to squeeze around the edge of the pitfall.
Jun 28, 2017 9:28 am
"Very well. Be ready to grab me if this goes poorly." Ruthann takes a few steps back and makes sure Valius isn't in the way. Here goes! He then leaps across the pit.
Jun 28, 2017 9:54 am
As Ruthann lands, Mel gives him a courious look. "Why would I need to catch you? More importantly, why would you think I would attempt to? Brother, we have crossed gaps like this many times. Stop being a baby. Now, be a gentleman and take the lead" Her tone more playful at the end as she gustures for Ruthann to lead.
Jun 28, 2017 11:48 am
Ruthann turns to her, "Being a baby? No, just being cautious. Would you rather grab me if I slipped or pull me out of a 10 ft deep pit?..........." He hesitates while looking at her, then cocks his head to the side and says with a smirk on his face, "Did you trigger that snare we passed? You have some dirt In your hair and on your shoulders." He chuckles and looks over at Valius and Laucain, "How are you two going to make it over. Need any assistance?"
Jun 28, 2017 12:02 pm
OOC:
The pit is easily enough to be walked around.
Following the goblins' trail, you come across a large cave in a hillside about 5 miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.

Jun 29, 2017 4:27 am
Sheathing her sword she gets a pouty look. "You ruin all my fun brother." Grabbing Laucain's arm before he walks off. "You better leave some for me Lowshin." She lets go and point two finger at her eyes then points them at Laucain.

Laucain
On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area—including a pair of goblins lurking there right now! They seem to have taken an interest in the bickering siblings on the other side of the stream, as they pull back the strings on their bows.

Shortswords are a d6. So you'd roll 1d20+6, 1d6+4 for your first attack then 1d20+6, 1d4 for your second. You don't add your modifier to the the second attack's damage unless you take the specific feat.

*Actually, you'd have advantage because they don't see you so roll 2d20 for both attacks.

Jun 30, 2017 1:49 am
OOC:
Sorry, that was my bad. With your melee weapons, at your level, you get two attacks; one as an action and one as a bonus action. When you make an attack, you roll one d20 (If you have advantage, roll two d20's and take the higher; If you have disadvantage, roll two d20's and take the lower) and then add all the modifiers that apply (Dex or Str and proficiency). If you hit you roll your weapon die (d4-d12, depending on what weapon you're using) then add your all the modifiers that apply (Dex or Str (you do not add this modifier to your bonus attack unless you have the feat that states you do)).

You're not too far off a correct roll: To make things simple, roll everything separate and let the site do the adding. You already rolled to hit for your first attack and after adding your modifiers, you got a 22 to hit (which definitely hits) so roll your damage which is 1d6+4.

Then roll to hit for your bonus action: 1d20+6, 1d20+6, 1d6.

You can't take reaction when surprised and it was a natural 20 so no amount of AC buffing would've helped because it automatically hit.

Between the two goblins you find:
2 goblin-sized bows
18 goblin-sized arrows
7 sp
3 pouches filled with toenails and fingernails
a half-eaten book about cooking
and a small mirror.
Jul 3, 2017 11:19 am
She leaves everything but the silver, mirror and the 3 pouches. Getting back to the group. "Did one of you find a bag full of toe and fingernails, cuz I have 3 more. Let's keep them. They could be the way they barter." She keeps watch while the others rest. Once ready she takes the lead, as Laucain has already scouted the area and need not be in front with no known place to hide. With her shield at the ready she marches into the cave mouth.
Jul 3, 2017 11:39 am
"I pulled 1 pouch from the first 3 we killed on the road." Ruthann replies. Once we are ready to go, Ruthann walks up to Mel and whispers, "Take care Sister. I don't want to see you take an arrow the way I did." and he thumps her on the shoulder before he takes up the rear and keeps his senses active for any more surprises from the goblins.

Sorry for my lack of posting. For the sake of my sanity, I'll just "skip" ahead to make things easier on me.
Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage. The cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end, and is filled with the stench of animals. Savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greet you ears where three wolves are chained up just inside the opening. Each wolf's chain leads to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite.

Good catch, Silver, I'll give you inspiration for that.
If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. Spending your inspiration gives you advantage on that roll.
Additionally, if you have inspiration, you can reward another player for good roleplaying, clever thinking, or simply doing something exciting in the game.
When another player character does something that really contributes to the story in a fun and interesting way, you can give up your inspiration to give that character inspiration.

Feeling it best to avoid the fragile earth, you turn and begin heading in the direction of the bridge that was seen. As you are making progress, the passage is suddenly filled with a mighty roar, as a huge surge of rushing water pours down from above.

Valius, only manages to reach the outer wall of the passage before the water hits him; securing the option of grabbing the wall, knowing it could be hazardous if he fails to hold on.

Laucain, leading the party and just recently hit by a javelin, has no time to react and is swept up by the roaring waters.

Actually, I just remembered I can cast shield as a reaction!!!!! Damn it all! Ok I'd like to cast shield when the 2nd wolf hits me. That raises my AC by +5 until the beginning of my next turn correct? Which means that. None of the wolves attacks would have hit me correct?
Jul 27, 2017 9:35 am
OOC:
This is correct.
Jul 27, 2017 9:55 am

Huh.
Valius' thunder blasts the wolves exploding each of their heads and throwing the remains all about the cavern.

Mel walks to the back of the cave and spots the fissure in the wall. Speaking to Ruthann with irritation, while staring at the fissure. "So, you think the goblins come and go through this little hole. I somehow doubt that Ruthy." She turns to face Ruthann. "What's your next idea? Find a troll cave and season yourself." She pushes past him and walks to the mouth of the cave. Standing in quiet contemplation.

"Well done Valius!" Although I did soften that one up a little bit for you!" Ruthann says as he walks up to Valius and claps him on the shoulder.
Jul 27, 2017 12:27 pm
OOC:
Holy.... didn't expect them all to fail. Probably good considering I'm at half health.
Valius can't help but smile, before remembering the side effects of going in loud. "Don't thank me yet, did what I had to. Unfortunately everything in this place knows we're here now. Any hostages will be in trouble. Got to move fast."

OOC:
Do the wolves have any loot on them? Also, can we examine the room and the fissure in the back of it?
Jul 28, 2017 2:47 am
OOC:
Nope, these are the pocketless variety of wolves.
Going to the far end of the cavern, there is a narrow opening on the east wall that leads to a natural chimney that climbs 30 feet up. At the base of the fissure is rubbish that's been discarded through the opening above.
OOC:
Anyone attempting to climb up, give me two Athletics checks.
Jul 28, 2017 4:56 am
OOC:
I'll give it a shot.

You easily make it up the chimney.
OOC:
We'll wait for the others to decide what to do before moving on.
Jul 28, 2017 6:13 am
OOC:
Hanging out near the mouth but with view of Ruthann
Jul 28, 2017 10:01 am
"Any rope to help some of use less able get up there?" Valius is looking at the chimney doubting his ability to do it in assisted.
Jul 28, 2017 11:39 am
"Should I try to figure out what's up here before we all try to climb our way up?" Ruthann calls down in a hushed tone.
Jul 28, 2017 12:23 pm
"You can but if there's enemies and the worst should happen. We may have trouble getting up. Find something to attach the rope to first, just in case."
Jul 28, 2017 12:30 pm
OOC:
What do I see? And, Is there anything I can attach the rope to that will support their weight and let them climb up?
Jul 28, 2017 1:36 pm
OOC:
Still have light on your spear?
Jul 28, 2017 3:28 pm
OOC:
Yes. It would be active during and after I climbed the fissure.
Jul 29, 2017 5:15 am
Reaching the top, you see that sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. A large opening leads north down a set of natural stone steps, the roar of falling water echoing from beyond. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder. Around the fire pit is a bugbear, a wolf, and two goblins. There are two stalagmites in front of the narrow opening that descends down that would provide a solid base to attach a rope to.

However, the ones sitting around the fire pit all turn to look at the light that shines from your spear.
OOC:
They weren't expecting anyone coming up through the chimney so they are surprised. Ruthann has a turn before initiative.
Jul 29, 2017 8:12 am
OOC:
Ok, I have some questions. 1) Does dismissing the light spell count as an action? (Which would take my surprise action if it did I'm guessing), 2) it's not a concentration spell so if I cast something else or attacked it wouldn't cancel the spell right, 3) Mage hand description says I can't attack with it but I can manipulate an object with it. Can I cast Mage hand and pick up a handful of coals and throw it at an enemy? Or does Mage hand not work that way?
Jul 29, 2017 11:22 am
OOC:
1) "The spell ends if you cast it again or dismiss it as an action." So yes, dismissing the Light spell counts as an action.
2) Correct, only concentration spells cancel out concentration spells.
3) Normally probably not but, given the situation, I'll say sure, pick up some coals and chuck 'em.
Jul 29, 2017 1:25 pm
Ok. Ruthann sees the enemies gathered around the smoldering coals and curses under his breath. He casts Mage Hand over the coals and then scoops up a handful and throws it at the goblin's faces to try to blind them. (Try to get both goblin's faces with the coals if He can) He then takes cover behind one of the stalagmites. As he does so he calls down to his party, "Guys, I've got company up here!!!"
Jul 29, 2017 1:56 pm
"Slide down then, it'll take far too long for us all to get up and help you." Valius calls up to Ruthann.
Jul 29, 2017 2:09 pm
OOC:
Mage hand is just a cantrip, it won't be able to target multiple or blind. I'll let you redo your turn if you thought it was going to be more.
Jul 29, 2017 7:34 pm
In that case, Ruthann throws a dart at 1 of the goblins and then climbs back down the fissure.

The dart punctures the goblin's eye socket, it barely as time to make a sound before it falls on it's back lifeless.
OOC:
Should of asked for this earlier, give me two athletics for climbing down.

OOC:
Sure.
Ruthann throws the dart and then hustles back to the edge to climb back down, and...

Rolls

1d20+3 : (6) + 3 = 9

1d20+3 : (3) + 3 = 6

Focused more on fighting than climbing, your body and mind refuse to descend, not wanting to take a misplaced step.
OOC:
I'll give you the option of whether or not you just stopped at the narrow opening or began down it. With your rolls, you don't gain or lose any ground; so luckily you don't fall.

You also get to go again because players rolled higher for this rounds initiative.
Jul 30, 2017 8:04 am
OOC:
Would I be able to tie the rope around a stalagmite and throw it down to where the others are AS MY ACTION? Or is that too specific or not something that could be done in 1 action? If that's too complex for 1 Action, how narrow is the gap between the stalagmites? Narrow enough to force single file? If I can't tie the rope and toss it down, I'll just throw another dart at the other goblin and take cover behind one of the stalagmites.
Jul 30, 2017 6:32 pm
OOC:
Yeah, you could tie off the rope as an action.

The stalagmites aren't narrow enough to force single file.
Jul 30, 2017 9:05 pm
Seeing the light of her brother cantrip climb up and fade into the small hole at the top of the garbage pile Mel curses. "By Tyr's hand what is that fool doing now." Then begins heading back to the group. "Is he OK up threre?"
Jul 30, 2017 10:10 pm

Since the gap isn't narrow enough to force single file I will just throw a dart at the other goblin and then climb back down the fissure.

The dart flies gracefully through the air, the goblins skull doesn't even impede it's movement as it passes cleanly through to the other side. Ruthann manages to get half way down before a rock slips, making him give pause.

Will ready my action to cast Sacred Flame on the next creature to come out of the chimney. If I can see the chimney.
Aug 1, 2017 9:25 am
OOC:
Technically, we aren't in combat anymore right? Unless the wolf and bugbear take the long way around to get to us then we are not in immediate danger. (Since I killed both goblins who could have made ranged attacks)
Aug 1, 2017 2:08 pm
OOC:
Nope, wrong. You're out of immediate danger from the wolf but the bug bear has ways of attacking at range and has the option of going down the chimney, if he wants. You did lean the odds more to your favor though by taking out both goblins.
You hear the bugbear shout something before appearing at the top of the chimney...the awkward angle of the chimney makes Mel's sacred flame easy to dodge; however the act of dodging, throws off the bug bear's aim as he tosses the javelin at Ruthann and missing him. The bug bear ducks back, out of view.

Surprised confusion is the best way to describe her face. "What, was that? Are you hurt?" She asks Ruthann after she fires off her spell.
Aug 2, 2017 4:48 am
"Not at the moment, thanks to your spell just now. I believe he might have hit me otherwise." Ruthann replies as he clings to the wall halfway up the fissure. "Keep an eye on that opening. He might appear for another attack."

Yep, still half way up. Go ahead and give me the two Athletic rolls.
Aug 2, 2017 12:50 pm
OOC:
Here goes.
For the rest of my movement I'd like to get as close as I can to the door where Valius is. You can't hold a Bonus Action, only your Action.

To climb, each check "used" half your speed (15) since you succeeded the first check and were only 15 feet up you have 15 feet left. Using that to get closer, you're about 15 feet away from the opening and the wolf but it is considered behind 3/4 cover for you. You can attack it now or hold your action in hopes for a better shot.

Aug 5, 2017 2:39 pm
OOC:
I'm fine with playing as is it lead to more drama. What actually happened in that turn anyway, extra movement? I'm fine with that.
Aug 5, 2017 2:47 pm
OOC:
Correct, the wolf used its Dash action to cover 80 feet, the bugbear chucked the javelin and hid waiting for the wolfs call. After all the players went I should of rolled initiative (which the player won when I remembered) so the players would of had an extra turn before being attacked and seeing the bugbear.

Speaking of initiative, what does everyone think of this system? I like it because tides can turn just like that but it can also be confusing, as what happened here.

Raising her sword, ready to cut the bloody wolf in half, she turns at Valius' words. A large, oversized, hairy goblin barrels down the rubble in her brother direction, then back to the wolf. It's fur now frazzled and smoky. She takes a large wolf-killing swing at the beast, then turns and runs to her brothers side with a huff. "That little ogre-mount just got through my armor. I'm gonna have a word with that blacksmith when we get home."

The sword slices the wolf's ear clean off and continues down, leaving a large gash in it's stomach. Despite having some intestines falling out of the recent slash, it holds on and lashes out at Valius...the teeth show surprising amount of pressure and power as they dig into Valius' flesh and attempt to pull him down. She takes a step in at the beast and smashes it with her shield causing him to take a step back. With a yell and a slash she opens its stomach. The creatures entrails spill onto as it frantically kneels on the ground trying to put them back in. She thrusts her blade into is hands pinning them to the ground with handfuls of itself. It wails in pain and she covers her ears. When it finishes she smacks it in the face causing its head to snap back and her sword to come out. The thing falls on its back and Mel leaves her sword. She thrusts her shield onto it throat and leans on it. "Allow me to introduce you to Gruumsh." With that she lifts her shield and smashes it 1...2...3...4...5...15 more times until its head has rolled away.

With sweat dripping she drops her shield and runs over to Valius. She places her hands on his body and quickly speaks an incantation. His wounds cauterize and his life is sustained.

On it's person, you find:
Two pouches full of toe and finger nails
Hide armor
A morningstar
A javelin

and
A chest key.

The wolf has nothing.

She gives her brother an evil eye. "At least I got the job done. We need to wait for Valius to wake. No sense getting ourselves killed." She drags Valius' body into the wolf den to the far corner. She sit between him and the den opening and opens a ration. "I'll watch the door, you watch the rubble." Her eyes focused on the den opening.

Ruthann looks at her with an expression that's hard to read and then glances over at Valius. "He seems to be in one piece still, but he should prob take it easy until he can get a good rest. Maybe try NOT getting torn apart by any more wolves."

OOC:
Oops... I rolled a d20 for damage.... I was wondering why that number was so much higher than the first roll. I don't know the AC on goblins, but I think that misses yes? If it hits, I'll roll again for damage.

OOC:
If we all get actions before the goblin then I want to take the Dodge but use my shield to deflect an attack rather than avoiding it. For flavor you know.

Also hoping to be giving Ruthann 1/2 cover, making myself a larger target.
Aug 15, 2017 6:49 pm
The dart sails through the air, harmlessly dropping off before it can reach the bridge. The goblin runs into the cavern arch, away from view.
OOC:
You'd be at disadvantage, so the double d20 roll works out.

Only Ruthann gets an attack, strictly because of his 20 on his perception. The goblin was on high alert and Ruthann has a beacon of light; by the time anyone else came out to Ruthann's attack, the goblin would be gone.

Anyone can use a healer's kit. However, it doesn't revive them from zero (unless you have the healer's feat), it only stabilizes them without the need for a Medicine check. Being stabilized means you are still at 0 hp but no longer have to make death saving throws.

[ +- ] I do have a closing scenario that I hope you enjoy.
There is a sudden white flash that blinds you, you close your eyes instinctively; you feel as if your body is thrust through time and space. Your vision clears and you find yourself in an unknown town, though it looks peaceful by the looks of it. You see a large banner hanging from to poles planted in the ground that reads 'Ahphet's Annual Harvest Festival' that looks like it was made from a handful of different people.

The town is empty—as it looks to be early morning—save for one person, an aging dwarf sitting atop his wagon smoking tobacco in front of a number of barrels and a small sign that reads 'EARN GOLD QUICK, ADVENTURERS WANTED'.
Sep 23, 2017 4:15 am
She wakes up a bit groggy. Rubbing her head she looks around. "Where in the nine hells are we? This doesn't look like a goblin cave."
Sep 29, 2017 5:39 pm
Rufio wakes with a start, fists flailing, before realizing that he's no longer in a fight. In last night's brawl he had gotten careless and had taken a beating, to end up sleeping it off wedged up against a stack of firewood behind a tavern. But now he finds himself somewhere else.

"Where the fuck am I?" he wonders out loud as he scrambles to his feet and shakes the dirt from his dark clothes and distinctive spiky, red-tipped hair. The young ruffian notices the old dwarf first before the others also newly woken. "Hey!" he calls out as he swaggers up to the wagon. "You hirin' adventurers? Well you found one." Rufio puffs up his chest and thumps it, setting the trinkets hanging around his neck a-clicking.

The old dwarf rubs his beard while he takes a long drag on his pipe as he stares at the red-tipped hair youngin'. He blows out a large cloud of smoke then replies calmly "Aye, I'm hirin'; if you have what it takes." He swings his foot out kicking a lid off one of the barrels, revealing it to be filled to the brim with, what looks to be, sticks. "Does this tickle your fancy, boy?"
Sep 30, 2017 6:02 am
Rufio doesn't know what to make of the sticks. Not wanting to appear ignorant, he pretends to inspect them and nod in what he hopes is a knowing manner. "Sure, sure. Whaddya want done with 'em?"
Oct 1, 2017 4:53 am
The old dwarf grins "It's quite simple actually, just a bit too work intensive for my aging bones. You take a wand, like so," He grabs a stick from the barrel and nods up at a bird in the sky "Then simple point and shoot." He thrusts the stick forward and three bolts shoot out, exploding the bird.

Oct 2, 2017 6:17 am
"Five gold for what? You haven't told me what the wand does and I'd recommend taking a barrel or two, you'd get more done..." The dwarf's sentence gets cutoff as he lets out a yelp as the missiles slam by near him, nothing else seems to happen. "Careful where you point those, you careless woman. What is the scam here? You take the wands, fire them and figure out what their secondary effect is, come back with your findings then get paid. If you want a more traditional adventure, there is a wolf pack nearby that has been causing this town quite some problems. Unless I'm missing something, you misunderstood Dissonant Whispers. It doesn't require an attack roll, just a save from the target. On a fail, they take 3d6 and must use their reaction to move as far as possible from the caster; on a save, they take half and don't need to move.
The wolf shakes it head at the song but continues it's charge towards the party.

Rolls

Dissonant Whispers - (3d6)

(316) = 10

Wolf save - (1d20+1)

(17) + 1 = 18

The three wolves all converge onto Rufio...but only one manages to get through his tough skin and quick feet (2 piercing; Str save DC 11 or prone).

You all hear a deep, guttural howl come from further down in the cave.
OOC:
Players up.

2d4+2 : (41) + 2 = 7

1d20+4 : (3) + 4 = 7

2d4+2 : (41) + 2 = 7

The wolf snarls as Mel rushes towards it, it readies a leap but it's swiftly interrupted by a heavy shield blow causing it to send it reeling back.
OOC:
Rufio and Bhalfras are up.

Rufio wraps his arms around the neck and choke the life out of the wolf that he stabbed earlier with the wand.
OOC:

OOC:
how far is the nearest wolf to me?
Nov 12, 2017 11:14 am
OOC:
Depends on how close you were to Rufio; two are in melee with him and one is 5 feet from him.
Nov 13, 2017 5:55 pm
OOC:
I can't answer that so I'll go after one of the ones in melee with Rufio.
Bhalfras roars and grabs the nearest wolf by the scruff of it's neck and it's tail.
OOC:
grapple is str check or athletics? they are the same modifier

Rolls

Grapple str or ath - (1d20+4)

(3) + 4 = 7

Nov 13, 2017 6:10 pm
OOC:
You're not proficient in Athletics?
Nov 14, 2017 10:56 am
OOC:
Grapple is athletics vs athletics or acrobatics.
Rufio's punch meets the sharp points of the wolf's teeth (1 point piercing), he uses the close proximity to wrap his arm around the beast's neck, wrestling it into submission.

Bhalfras has trouble grabbing the wolf and keeping hold while still avoiding it's snarling growl.

Rolls

Rufio Save - (1d20+2)

(5) + 2 = 7

Bhalfras Save - (1d20+2)

(12) + 2 = 14

Nov 14, 2017 11:20 am
The wolves charge in again, one on each.

The one on Mel can't find a weakness in her armor.

Rufio's wolf bucks around and gains purchase into his leg (7 points piercing).

Bhalfras' manages to just avoid the snap of the wolf as it strikes towards him.
OOC:
Misread pack tactics, ignore the advantage on Mel (8 to hit) and Bhalfras (8 to hit), so they both miss.

Players are up.

OOC:
Do I need to save vs prone again? Including a roll in case it's needed. Otherwise, just ignore.
Rufio tightens his grip on the wolf and attempts to throw the canine over his shoulder and slam it to the ground.
