Mordred drinks and looks for likely hiding places.

"Why ain't we cutting her down now anyway? Figuring when that beast shows up, she's not just going to sit and twiddle her thumbs." Zangua strides forward, intent to thin the number of opponents.
Feb 23, 2018 7:20 pm
Mordred's throat burns from the strong liquor. There isn't much cover here save for the root mass, which Mordred suspects would be the worst possible place to hide.

"She will not survive the summoning," the hunter says, but he makes no move to stop Zangua.

As Zangua approaches, a stout chunk of root half way up the column bursts open, revealing a malevolent yellow-orange eye nearly two feet across. Its pupil swivels around erratically as brown slime oozes like tears from its corners.

"It will not be long now," the hunter says.
Feb 23, 2018 7:33 pm
"How do you know so much about this?" Zangua asks, pausing in his approach as the environment changes towards unsettling.
Feb 23, 2018 7:38 pm
"Demon hunting is my profession," he replies.

Some of the strands of slime start to sway and pulse as if possessed by some animating spirit.
Feb 24, 2018 8:28 pm
Domarc takes a long drink, and surveys the scene.
Feb 26, 2018 1:00 pm
Felor squints at the demonic cluster of roots and its oozing, yellow-orange eye. What manner of fiend could this be, that is birthed from plants and feeds on blood?

Do I have any idea what this is or how to kill it?

Zangua asks the obvious, "You just gonna let us flail about? I figure if this is your job, you ought to know how to kill it."
Feb 26, 2018 7:39 pm
Does Mordred know anything about demon hunters in general, or this thing in particular?

Not sure at all what the appropriate skill check would be, so I'll just roll a straight d20 and list off some potential skill bonuses here:

Perception +0
Arcana, History, Investigation, Religion +1
Insight +3

The hunter takes his gourd back after everybody (who wants one) has had a drink. "The manifest body can be broken down like any other flesh. It just is a bit more work. We will wait until it is fully present on this plane before we engage it in combat."

The creatures emerging from the malign nest of roots reminds Mordred of midnight stories told of Abyssal creatures worshipped by primitive cults.

Felor sees only a mockery of the natural order of Fjorgyn, a demon with no right to inhabit this Werld.

One yellow-brown pseudopod of slime launches out from the roots and slaps itself across the woman's back. She lets out an involuntary cry as the pseudopod tenses and starts to drag her and her dead companion into the roots. Several more knots of wood burst open. The slime is beginning to coalesce into a vaguely unified form, a single thick column surmounted by the eye, with many flailing slime-tentacles attached.

Roll for initiative.

"Sounds like a fine time for a chaser," says Zangua, downing a Potion of Fire Giant Strength.
OOC:
Not sure if I would have been able to drink the potion prior to combat. If you feel it's too late, consider it my first round's action.

EDIT: You and me can just chill back here for a while, Felor.

And a heads-up that might save us a little time, Octo: Mordred will use Hellish Rebuke as a Reaction the first time he takes damage from the demon-thing.

Quote:
You point your finger, and the creature that damaged you is momentarily surrounded by hellish flames. The creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. It takes 3d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Rolls

Hellish Rebuke Fire Damage - (3d10)

(7103) = 20

On that note, I have Dampen Elements which I will use when possible:
Quote:
When I or a creature within 30ft takes acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage, I can use my reaction to grant resistance against that instance of damage.

The hunter mutters something to himself, a quiet prayer perhaps, as the demon tears itself free of the roots.

Edit: Zangua and Domarc, you can take the first actions.

(5) + 2 = 7

Demon initiative - (1d20+2)

How big is the demon, and the chamber? Is it possible for me to drop a fireball in such a way that I don't harm Zangua but just the emerging thing?
