OOC:
Apologies for the absence! Not sure if you still want my initiative or if I should just drop in at the bottom of the round. I'll roll it just in case.
Leth, glancing between the body and the large eyeball of the creature, considers to himself Well, it's eye seems likely to be it's softest spot, as his fingers tighten on the drawstring of his bow.

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+3)

(18) + 3 = 21

Mar 6, 2018 5:41 pm
This chamber is about 70' wide and maybe 80' long. The size of the demon is hard to assess, as it seems able to stretch and spread out, but the central "trunk" looks to be about seven feet tall. With Zangua engaging, there's no way to target a fireball that won't get him in the blast radius.

Leth, you can take an action now as well.
Mar 6, 2018 6:05 pm
OOC:
Zangua does have a Ring of Fire Resistance and a Ring of Protection, so if he makes his save he'll take quarter damage. That is, if you're intent on launching a fireball.
Mar 7, 2018 5:35 pm
"Zangua! I'm gonna give you an opening!" Leth shouts as he takes aim at the creature's eyeball.

"NOW!" He yells as he releases the arrow, hoping that an arrow in this thing's eye would distract it long enough to allow Zangua to get in another attack.

Using Commander's Strike. Zangua can immediately make one more attack against the demon with an extra 1d8 damage, regardless of whether I actually hit or not.

Rolls

Attack with colossus slayer damage, assuming Zangua's earlier attacks hit - (1d20+8, 2d8+4)

1d20+8 : (13) + 8 = 21

2d8+4 : (53) + 4 = 12

Mar 7, 2018 5:46 pm
Zangua reacts almost instinctively, swiping his glaive across where the arrow strikes.

Rolls

Reaction Glaive, Slashing Damage, Superiority Die Damage - (1d20+10, 1d10+7, 1d8)

1d20+10 : (3) + 10 = 13

1d10+7 : (6) + 7 = 13

1d8 : (7) = 7

Mar 7, 2018 7:45 pm
Not wanting to catch Zangua in the blast, Domarc will cast Dissonant Whispers at level 2.
Quote:
You whisper a discordant melody that only one creature of your choice within range can hear, wracking it with
terrible pain. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 3d6 psychic damage and
must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you. The creature doesn’t move into obviously dangerous ground, such as a fire or a pit. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and doesn’t have to move away. A deafened creature automatically succeeds on the save.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a
spell slot o f 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by
1d6 for each slot level above 1st.
As a bonus action, Domarc will inspire Felor - a bonus 1d8 for any attack roll, ability check, or saving throw in the next ten minutes.

Rolls

Dissonant Whispers, psychic damage - (4d6)

(5163) = 15

Mar 8, 2018 7:07 pm
Leth fires an arrow into the corner of the demon's eye while Zangua shreds through roots and reaching pseudopods with his whirling glaive.

Edit: A sudden, shrill, unearthly shriek sounds in the chamber, and the preserved corpse leaning against the wall pitches forward to land face-first on the ground.

The demon's eye swivels to focus on Zangua, staring with unnerving intensity. Zangua, make a Wisdom saving throw.

The demon hunter flings his curved knife at the demon's eye, then steps forward and takes a smooth, practiced swing at its trunk with his hand axe.

Edit 2: The hunter's knife strikes the demon's eye but bounces off its vitreous surface. It's fixed gaze at Zangua does not waver. When he steps forward to swing his axe, a pseudopod thrusts upward to deflect the blow.

Felor and Mordred, you're up.

Rolls

Demon WIS saving throw (advantage) - (1d20+6, 1d20+6)

Rolls

Wisdom Save - (1d20+3)

(14) + 3 = 17

Mar 9, 2018 10:04 am
Felor sees Domarc weaving some sort of spell in the corner of his eye, he doesn't catch the words but feels a surge of adrenaline and energy - surely a sign of Fjorgyn's favour! Felor raises his spear to point at the demon's eye and proclaims "I smite thee!" as a bolt of radiant energy leaps from the spear tip towards the aberration.

Cast Guiding Bolt
Quote:
On a hit, the target takes 4d6 radiant damage, and the next attack roll made against this target before the end of your next turn has advantage

Rolls

Guiding Bolt attack roll - (1d20+6)

(14) + 6 = 20

Guiding Bolt damage (radiant) - (4d6)

(4121) = 8

Mar 9, 2018 12:54 pm
Assuming the Guiding Bolt hits, Mordred will use that Advantage to Sneak Attack...

As the eye glares at Zangua, Mordred uses the opportunity to slip in close to the column and attempts to plunge his dagger into a particularly vulnerable gobbet of slime. He then Disengages with the creature and attempts to move to the back of the room, out of range of the tentacles.

Zangua stares transfixed at the demon's eye, finding something strangely compelling in the empty blackness of its pupil and the strange patterns of the iris...when suddenly, a blast of light energy from Felor's spear breaks his focus. He looks away, shaking his head as a haunting afterimage of the eye dissipates in his vision.

Mordred, meanwhile, darts in, stepping over the mangled, half-eaten bodies of the demon's human thralls, plunges his dagger into its trunk, and slips away before it can react.

The head of the fallen corpse pops off and rolls across the ground to the other side of the chamber. The body suddenly snaps upward, folding itself in half with a puff of whitish-gray dust, then falls back down again. From some uncertain source you hear a deep, piteous groan of pain.

The demon hunter glances over at the animate corpse. "The master calls its servant. Be ready."

Domarc, Leth, and Zangua, you're up.
Mar 9, 2018 6:04 pm
"Great," says Zangua, his tone indicating he thinks it's anything but. Might as well do as much as he can before the demon's friends show up, and Zangua whirls his glaive upon the giant eye.

Rolls

Glaive vs Demon, Slashing Damage - (1d20+10, 1d10+7)

1d20+10 : (8) + 10 = 18

Nervous about the corpse that appears to be animating, and frustrated that he doesn't have any magic tricks that won't also impact his friends, Domarc fires his hand crossbow.

(18) + 6 = 24

Damage, if applicable - (1d6+3)

Leth, you around? Will get things moving tomorrow either way.
Mar 15, 2018 4:03 am
Quote:
"The master calls its servant. Be ready."
"Not if we can stop it first." Leth says, mostly to himself, before quickly firing off two shots in rapid succession, once again aiming for the creature's large eyeball.

Using Distracting Strike; next attack against the Demon has advantage!

Zangua slashes and batters the demon's eye while Domarc and Leth fire their bolts and arrows into it. The sharp points of the blade and projectiles have difficulty finding purchase on the smooth glassy surface of the eye, but it does seem to redden and ooze pus-like tears under the onslaught. The demon continues to disengage itself from the cage of roots, and whips rapidly elongating pseudopods with alarming speed at Zangua and Felor's legs.

Edit: The flailing appendages slap uselessly against Zangua's greaves, while Felor nimbly hops over the one sweeping at his legs like a child jumping rope.

The demon hunter lowers his head and charges in like a bull, ignoring the eye and swinging his axe hard at the demon's trunklike body.

Edit 2: A chunk of foul yellowish fiendflesh goes flying as the demon hunter hacks into his foe.

A profoundly black, almost corporeal shadow seems to be pooling around the folded, broken corpse that had been leaning against the wall of late.

Felor, Mordred, you're up.

Rolls

Mar 15, 2018 6:57 pm
Mordred looks up at the looming eye and blasts a cone of fire directly into it.

Burning Hands:
Quote:
Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Self (15-foot cone)

Components: V, S

Duration: Instantaneous

As you hold your hands with thumbs touching and fingers spread, a thin sheet of flames shoots forth from your outstretched fingertips. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried.
