My group has gone 3 years in a row. We play in the open gaming area only, no events. I'm in an online group with people from Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan (Me). Had so much fun playing online that we meet there every year.

Play what you wish - understand a party without a healer will move through a story more slowly, and party death may be greater. I will have opportunity for replacement PCs to enter the story as required without too much delay

No, they don't. However, if you want to increase them later on, then you will have to respect the level restrictions.

Is a holy symbol required for healers like in D&D? Is healing magic divine in origin?

They are not mentioned anywhere in the rules as being required. There is no stated origin for healer magic but I assume divine in my campaign.

Great stuff, thanks! My idea for Herja is that she's blessed with the talent for healing but she rejects the tribe's dictate that she become a medicine woman. Not waiting for the tribe to punish her for her defiance she sets out on her own to find her own destiny. I'd say she does honor Varl but still struggles with the healing gift. Just a warning to my fellow players, this hothead hottie is going to want to fight half the time she's supposed to be healing.

Unless you have more questions for the Harold the Scribe, you are free to go shopping with your tokens. They are accepted at all stores/inns for you to purchase weapons, armor, scrolls, gear, food, 'company', etc.

So just to confirm that I'm understanding the layout: The manor house is atop the cliff face, and the cave is somewhere on the same cliff face. The camp is below on the beach.

Yes. And spent basically anytime. Due to the nature of PBP, I permit things like Dodge to be post attack roll, too

Unless roleplaying or other circumstances dictate otherwise, I assume healers heal during the catch breath portion post encounter. If situations force the party to flee or into another fight right away, there would be time to roll perhaps one heal.

sounds good. I hadn't really studied the magic rules yet, so I wrongly assumed that magic was more limited as it is in other systems. But it seems the only limiting factor as far as frequency is the cooldown period? (and requiring a successful check to cast of course)

There is an alternate "mana points" system I've used from time to time that puts more limits on casting.
The cooldown system allows GMs to really throw the kitchen sink at players, and rather than counting 100 rounds cooldown, I just call that "per encounter".

Did I use the Charge action correctly? http://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/669/?p=13409#p13409 Not sure, and couldn't find the relevant rule in the book. If I used it wrong then Herja uses Brutal Blow instead (Also adds BOD to attack). If everything's ok then great. Will use Brutal Blow next round ;-)

The idea is you choose one die for the 'CTN 20' and one for the 'CTN 1' correct? Just curious why you would choose the 11 for the CTN 20. Though I suppose it would make sense if you just picked one arbitrarily because of Esteber's coup on defence.

Not that it matters much in the current initiative order, but does Bart's initiative go up as soon as he drops Gertrude? The sword applies a - 2 penalty. It would make sense if the initiative changes after my next action with some other weapon.

Here is my living document translation Starslayers "Stray Dogs" Edition
It's a simplified version of the game coming out 'later'. This only has 3 classes and 3 races (plus one more race I unlocked by donating a couple of euros to Christian Kennig). Would not start until after I'm back from vacation. If it's too much for you, let me know that too.

How about I create encounter maps on a Google Slide (Free Powerpoint program) and give all players the right to edit the document?
On your turn in combat you can move your own token. Those of you who used to play with me on the DS forum - maintaining the movement was just too difficult/time consuming for me to do while working, etc.
I'd be ok with going "theater of the mind" like the DS game, but I would be willing to do this method if that interests you.

Yeah, don't worry about defense results when the attack misses - for example a defense fumble wouldn't count, nor do you need to roll slaying dice on a coup. - Because in RL you wouldn't roll the DEF roll anyway. Rolling your opponent's defense in PBP is just to speed the game process.

So tonight, I ended up playing a quick pickup game of DS with a couple friends of mine. It was with one local player and another buddy who recently moved to Syracuse. A regular player didn't show up and DS filled the void perfectly, even with just two PCs.
In the interest of time we ended up using the stats of Esteber and Veldebrand(from our previous game). They performed admirably in the Dungeon to go that we played.
I replaced the main Bandit baddy with a boot-stealing dog-poisoner. Many laughs were had.

I think I'm missing something. I can be pretty dense at times. I'm hanging on to the 3SP be able to avoid some big damage if Lord A gets another good shot in.

The rules state "attacks" not hits, and since it adds to your WB, I rule any attack, hit or miss.

Herja can inspect items to see if they are magical. Succeed at a MND+AU roll and you know if an item contains magic. Then pass a MND+IN and you can flat out identify it.

If there are two chars that can benefit from it or that char already has something of same or worse power, we all talk about it and decide. The money can be equally divided or kept in a common stash."

My opinion is that the proper item in the right character's hands pays off in spades for the entire party, so as long as the loot comes up decent for the whole group, we rarely make people take a cut for a magic item. Magic items are very expensive to purchase in DS, anyway.

I would say that you render someone unconscious rather than slay them if you bring them to 0 or less HP and make a point of telling me before your attack.

You are supposed to give 1/10th of your total treasure findings. In this area (northern freelands to Vestrach) if you are 'adventuring' without being a member of the guild, you can be fined or imprisoned. This is a mandate of the Vestrach Merchant Guild and Ironhall Longbeards (like the Texas Rangers of the dwarven city). This was imposed because of the large amount of highway robbery taking place on both city's merchant caravans.

Esteber's INI is now 9 (MOB 8, +2 Lightning Reflexes, -1 Metal Helmet). Also, since he's not using his shield once again, his DEF will be 16 (17 against attacks he,s aware of and not from the back). Since it seems I'm the party's official torchbearer, I might as well sell my shield on the next trip to the merchants... XD

Herja's strategy for our last few fights has been: Charge in and attack while allies are still uninjured (make sure to use Brutal Blow), then fall back and switch to healer mode.
Some questions:
1. How many actions/rounds does it take to stow a weapon and switch to a shield?
2. Can Herja use her shield to defend an ally? I guess to do that she'd have to be out front, huh?
3. Can't you just drop a torch when combat starts? Do torches go out when you drop 'em?

1. P. 39 will answer your question, although investing into multiple ranks of Lightning Reflexes might help somewhat, at least for drawing it... In fact, with enough ranks of this talent, you could drop a weapon as a free action, heal someone, and then pick it up as a free action. :P

Here in Praern you can visit a temple (healer spells) or a magic shoppe (wizard/sorcerer spells) to purchase scrolls level 1-5 at the listed prices. As an FYI in case we ever have a sorcerer - Fire magic (firebeam, etc) is frowned upon in most major cities (for obvious reasons) so sorcerers have to go to the 'black market' which sometimes involves dealing with servants of darkness.
Then instead of casting the scroll, you learn the spell (expends the scroll in the process).
I'll permit you to spend the gold and know Light if you'd like to say that you purchased it earlier!

Herja - when you have a spell that lasts n minutes but has a cooldown of just 1 round, you can go ahead and re-roll failures outside of combat for as long as people are willing to wait.

Added a couple of rolls and got two successes! Can I give those to Estebar and Alden? Looking at the sequence of retries here and factoring in cooldown, it seems the enchantment on Herja's sword will run out about a minute and a half from now, then Bart's two rounds later, then the others a round after that. Unless I got all that completely wrong...

Keep in mind the typical amount of time it takes to explore a space. I typically assume the spell a healer has "on deck" is Healing Touch. or some other healing spell. You can always declare the first round of combat what spell you are currently holding.

It looks like it took you 40 seconds to enchant all the weapons (Cooldown of 1 round after all), so your own weapon probably has something like 1 minute, 20 seconds of enchantment left.

Going back through the thread I realize I never said Herja dropped her weapon. But she must have, because she started (unsuccessfully) trying to heal people. What're the rules for using a shield as a weapon?

I would permit you to heal while using your shield, you would simply hold your weapon in your shield hand for a brief time or something.

Unless I put you right into another fight or you are fleeing, etc. - Just assume the healer tops everyone off. No need to roll.

I played a few roll20/g+ games with him in November, then he said he was taking on some extra holiday work. I reminded him he's welcomed back any time, he said thanks. Last I heard. I agree. Hope all is ok.

It's not magical/non-magical. It's something else. And everyone is still doing damage, it's halved for some reason....

That is the only type of binding the I'm at makes. Still, it does the job very well. I asked my boss and he told me I can bring pdfs to print any time, and he won,t charge me anything. So guess who's going to be printing a bunch of pdfs he bought from the Pathfinder Humble Indie Bundle? :P

CTNs above 20
Take your CTN (target number) and divide by 20, round up. Each 20 becomes it's own CTN and the spillover becomes it's own CTN.
Example: With a MAT of 24, you have one CTN of 20 and one CTN of 4. So you would roll 2 d20. The first one can coup or fumble, the second on can coup, but cannot fumble.
You may choose which result is applied to whatever target you want. So lets say you roll a 3 and a 16. You can apply the 16 to the 20 CTN and the 3 to the 4 CTN. Add the results together to get 19. Get it?
If you roll a 6 and a 20, you do not fumble. You may apply the 20 to the 20 and the 6 to the 4 (failing) so in this case you'd do 20 damage.
If you roll a 20 and a 12, you fumble - no hit at all.
If you roll a 1 on either dice, you can apply it to a target and then reroll to add on for a coup like normal. This can result in some really nasty totals!
