Gameplay - Chapter 1 - The River Queen

Dec 5, 2017 4:17 am
You have found yourselves on a river barge headed to Davokar forest. Your destination is an inn where you will meet with a merchant who will give you precise instructions to find an ancient ruin. He has offered good pay, although the treasures that can be found in such places has provided you will all the motivation you needed.

The River Maiden has three pairs of oars and a small sail, and is a good example of the more speedy cargo ships used on Ambrian rivers and lakes. On the slow waters of the lowland, boats like her are replaced by heavy sail barges that can carry bigger loads, but where the currents are quicker the ships must have both oars and sails to be able to travel upstream. Simply put, close to Davokar and the mountains, boats like the River Maiden are superior.

Upstream the River Maiden is driven by oars, or it can cruise where the river is wide enough. Downstream she often lies in the stream bed and the oars are only used to avoid obstacles in the water.

Map of The river maiden
1. Cargo Hold. The cargo hold runs below the whole deck, but is loaded and unloaded through an opening in the foredeck covered by wooden bars.
2. Oars. Three oar-pairs propel the River Maiden when the winds are calm.
3. Mast and Lookout. When travelling foggy lakes a watcher is needed to avoid collisions. In combat, someone sitting in the lookout has an advantage against those below. Climbing to the lookout during combat requires a successful Quick test with every movement action.
4. Main Deck. On the open deck between mast and the aftercastle, the crew-members and passengers sleep under suspended sailcloths.
5. Aftercastle. "Aftercastle" may be a too fancy word for the permanent tent where the ship’s Captain has his quarters.
6. Tiller. The River Maiden is steered by a fixed oar from a podium in the stern. The podium grants a height advantage in combat and a Quick test is needed to climb it under stress (if one does not use the stairs at the very back of the boat).

Captain: Ogval

Crew: Tamri, Arelo, Nigra

Other Passenger: Harasto

Soon after you have embarked, the ship lies bobbing outside the stream bed, far from the shore. You are wakened by Tamri calling to the river mists: "Arelo, Aaarelo!? No, not you too!" Everyone onboard gather on the deck, drowsy and armed with what weapon lay closest to their beds.

Niho wiped the sleep from her eyes as she groggily got to her feet. Her fingers danced at the hilt of the dagger tucked in the sash around her waist but she didn't yet draw it. Experience had taught her to look helpless for as long as possible in the face of danger. Keep your enemy guessing. Enemy...Niho remembered now, they were on a boat. Were there boarders? No, most likely not. A lone cry into the mist, perhaps someone has fallen overboard. She joined the others as they gathered and scanned the dark water and clinging mists that surrounded the boat. Niho felt a certain kinship with these waters, gloomy and unwiling to give up their secrets. She didn't like it. Niho shivered.
"What has happened?"

Tamri shudders, holding arms together. "The River Goddess has taken both Belda and Arelo. Ogval disrespected the river by refusing to make sacrifices."

Woken up by the commotion, Darthon moans as he gets up. He looks from side to side in the fog, rubs his neck and moans "Urgh, what is it now.". He feels stiff in his back from sleeping on the hard wood. Taking it not as urgent as he maybe should, Darthon picks up his dagger, a throwing dagger and strutts towards Tamri and Niho. Stretching he wants to ask what it is about, but then hears Tamri already answering Niho.
His posture changes from uncaring to alert as if he is hit by an arrow, "He did what? Why?" he asks unbelieving.

Ever-alert, even in her sleep, Eferneya wakes up to Tamri's call with a silent gasp, immediately grabbing her crow's beak, half expecting some eldritch assailants or ruthless savages to have boarded the River Maiden in the eerie mist.

The guarded Zarek barbarian, who was clearly of Ambrian descent, had been sleeping on her bedroll beneath the suspended sail cloth in the corner between the railing and the aftercastle of the vessel, and from there she could make out the silhouettes of Tamri, Niho and Darthon in the mist by the railing and hear them speaking in worried voices, quietly taking note of what was being said.

Why would a river captain be so stupid not to pay tribute to the River Goddess before sailing into the Davokar...

She got up and appeared next to them, walking carefully towards the railing, crow's beak in one hand and stiletto in the other, peering into the mist, alert and frightened. The spirits and monsters of the Davokar were very real, and only a fool would not be frightened in a situation like this.

Fenya the goblin has taken to sleeping on the main deck huddled against his wild pig Kverula ever seen since somebody complained of the smell (of pig or of goblin, it's unclear). Both are awakened by the yelling, and peek from behind a stack of crates. "Ssshh girl." Fenya says, leaning against his spear, peering into the mist while listening to the people talk.
OOC:
Throwing a Vigilant as well.

Tamri shrugs at Darthon's query. Captain Ogval exits from his small cabin, saying, "Alright, that's enough lollygagging about." he sets the crew to looking for Arelo overboard, and asks of the PCs: "Why don't you curious lot look around for clues."

Eferneya keeps an eye out, but sees little other than the fog and the lazy water.

Fenya notices the goblin crewmember, Nigra, casting dark gazes and furtive glances at the other passenger, Harasto.

Darthon looks from Tamri to Captain Ogval, attempting to conceal the anger in him "Seems like we already have a clue worth finding out more about.". Both hands outstretched, he points at Tamri and asks the Captain "Who is the river goddess and what sacrifices were not made?".

The captain sighs. "I guess I'm just not that superstitious. My mother ran this ship for years and never made sacrifices to appease some snake god or whatever."

He does tell you what he knows:

The Legend of the River Maiden
There are many tales about the rivers of Ambria and Davokar, one of them telling of the River Goddess or River Maiden. The myth is told in many different forms but has the following basic features:
One early morning, a river fisherman harvested his fish traps and found an elderly woman in one of them. She had gills and she had apparently exhausted herself trying to get free. As the fisherman helped the women she asked to be let back into the water, but the greedy human asked for something in return. The woman suggested that his family always would get as much food as they needed from the river. The fisherman wanted more and asked that he should be granted food enough to feed the whole village. With a grunt, the woman accepted his request.

The next day, the fisherman made such a huge catch that all villagers could eat their fill. The joy was slightly clouded by one of the other fishing teams vanishing without a trace – nothing but their rowboat was recovered. The day after that, the lucky fisherman caught yet another motherlode, not as big as the first one but enough for all – since a second team of fishermen had disappeared. And so it continued: a big catch and missing colleagues, day in and day out, until none but the lucky one remained. Then the families of the lost fishermen gathered and forced the man to tell his tale, after which they flung him into the water as an offering to the angered River Goddess. The catches returned to their normal size and all the lost fishermen returned to their families without remembering what had happened. Ever since then, the villagers sacrifice a part of their daily catch to appease the Maiden of the River.

To Ambrians living by the slow rivers of the lowland, the River Goddess is a vague threat, something used to make children and landlubbers sit still in the boat. But among barbarians – and the Ambrians who travel the untamed rivers of Davokar – stories are often told about what happens to crews that do not respect the tradition of making offerings to the irritable Goddess of the river; stories about lone river boats, unharmed but empty, that come floating with the current until they get caught up in the mud along the riverbanks.

"You would do wise to believe that such tales are more than mere old wife's tales. There is more to the world than what meets the eye, and while some arrogant fool laughs at such superstitious nonsense at the tavern in his little village which he's never left, that same man cannot explain when an empty boat appears from out the mist, with no sign of where its crew has gone."

Eferneya stepped away from the railing and approached Darthon and Captain Ogval.

"The further into the Davokar you travel, the more real such tales become. Now, it may not be the River Goddess we are dealing with here, but whatever it is, it has claimed two people from off the boat already, and we should be on the lookout and make sure that this boat won't be one of those that come floating down the river without a soul on board."
Dec 12, 2017 4:46 pm
The captain waves Eferneya's superstition away. "I've traveled this river my whole life and I've never seen the River Goddess act this way. You are right, however, that there are other, real threats. If you value your lives, you'll help my crew look for signs of whatever has taken him and stop jawing about legends."
Dec 12, 2017 5:39 pm
With what Eferneya and the captain talked, Darthon decided to rush to his equipment, picked up his bow and hung the quiver to his belt. "It seems to me you guys are debating what is after us, but if there is something, I'd rather we talk about what we should look for." he said, looking around the fog as he walked back up to them.

"Hmph!" Clearly offended by captain, Eferneya turned around and walked away towards the stern of the boat. She still held her weapons in a tight grip and kept an eye out for any trouble, but it was nigh impossible to see anything through the thick fog.

She looked around the main deck and the cargo hold, looking for any clues to what might have happened to the missing crew members, and at the same time listening attentively for any signs of trouble or for any of the others to call out.

Eferneya notices thay Arelo's full set of belongings remains at his bunk, indicating that he hadn't simply ran, or swam, off.
Dec 14, 2017 7:39 am
"His belongings are still here. Doesn't look like he got off the boat voluntarily." Eferneya moved cautiously towards the railing of the boat closest to where Arelo had been sleeping, looking for any clues as to what might have happened to him, all the while ready to swing her crow's beak at any horrid river creature that might suddenly jump up from the misty river and attack her.

Following Eferneya with his eyes and the bow raised, he glanced toward the other people around when she noted that the missing man propably didn't leave of his own accord. Darthon watched the woman move further towards the railing before his nerves got to him. "Neither will I." he threw his comment in the round, slinging the bow around his shoulder and proceeded to climb up the mast to the lookout.

"Excuse me," Fenya the goblin asks as he appears at Eferneya's elbow. "What are we looking for exactly?"
Dec 18, 2017 5:46 pm
Darthon easily climbs to the lookout. Looking from above, he sees only that the ship lies bobbing outside the stream bed, far from the shore. (Care to make a Vigilant check from up there?)

Eferneya makes a cursory inspection of the area by the railing, but finds nothing before Fenya approaches her.

Once he reached the lookout, Darthon climbed into it and looked around. He took the bow from his shoulder for the off chance that he saw something that attacked them and shouted down to the question he barely heard while climbing "Hold tight, I don't know yet!".

From the different vantage point, Darthon sees something on the railing on the opposite side to Eferneya and Fenya. From the distance, he can see only a mar or a smudge.
