Gameplay - Chapter 1 - The River Queen

Dec 5, 2017 4:17 am
You have found yourselves on a river barge headed to Davokar forest. Your destination is an inn where you will meet with a merchant who will give you precise instructions to find an ancient ruin. He has offered good pay, although the treasures that can be found in such places has provided you will all the motivation you needed.

The River Maiden has three pairs of oars and a small sail, and is a good example of the more speedy cargo ships used on Ambrian rivers and lakes. On the slow waters of the lowland, boats like her are replaced by heavy sail barges that can carry bigger loads, but where the currents are quicker the ships must have both oars and sails to be able to travel upstream. Simply put, close to Davokar and the mountains, boats like the River Maiden are superior.

Upstream the River Maiden is driven by oars, or it can cruise where the river is wide enough. Downstream she often lies in the stream bed and the oars are only used to avoid obstacles in the water.

Map of The river maiden
1. Cargo Hold. The cargo hold runs below the whole deck, but is loaded and unloaded through an opening in the foredeck covered by wooden bars.
2. Oars. Three oar-pairs propel the River Maiden when the winds are calm.
3. Mast and Lookout. When travelling foggy lakes a watcher is needed to avoid collisions. In combat, someone sitting in the lookout has an advantage against those below. Climbing to the lookout during combat requires a successful Quick test with every movement action.
4. Main Deck. On the open deck between mast and the aftercastle, the crew-members and passengers sleep under suspended sailcloths.
5. Aftercastle. "Aftercastle" may be a too fancy word for the permanent tent where the ship’s Captain has his quarters.
6. Tiller. The River Maiden is steered by a fixed oar from a podium in the stern. The podium grants a height advantage in combat and a Quick test is needed to climb it under stress (if one does not use the stairs at the very back of the boat).

Captain: Ogval

Crew: Tamri, Arelo, Nigra

Other Passenger: Harasto

Soon after you have embarked, the ship lies bobbing outside the stream bed, far from the shore. You are wakened by Tamri calling to the river mists: "Arelo, Aaarelo!? No, not you too!" Everyone onboard gather on the deck, drowsy and armed with what weapon lay closest to their beds.
Dec 5, 2017 10:52 am
Niho wiped the sleep from her eyes as she groggily got to her feet. Her fingers danced at the hilt of the dagger tucked in the sash around her waist but she didn't yet draw it. Experience had taught her to look helpless for as long as possible in the face of danger. Keep your enemy guessing. Enemy...Niho remembered now, they were on a boat. Were there boarders? No, most likely not. A lone cry into the mist, perhaps someone has fallen overboard. She joined the others as they gathered and scanned the dark water and clinging mists that surrounded the boat. Niho felt a certain kinship with these waters, gloomy and unwiling to give up their secrets. She didn't like it. Niho shivered.
"What has happened?"
Dec 6, 2017 5:32 am
Tamri shudders, holding arms together. "The River Goddess has taken both Belda and Arelo. Ogval disrespected the river by refusing to make sacrifices."
Dec 6, 2017 10:51 am
Woken up by the commotion, Darthon moans as he gets up. He looks from side to side in the fog, rubs his neck and moans "Urgh, what is it now.". He feels stiff in his back from sleeping on the hard wood. Taking it not as urgent as he maybe should, Darthon picks up his dagger, a throwing dagger and strutts towards Tamri and Niho. Stretching he wants to ask what it is about, but then hears Tamri already answering Niho.
His posture changes from uncaring to alert as if he is hit by an arrow, "He did what? Why?" he asks unbelieving.
Dec 6, 2017 8:56 pm
Ever-alert, even in her sleep, Eferneya wakes up to Tamri's call with a silent gasp, immediately grabbing her crow's beak, half expecting some eldritch assailants or ruthless savages to have boarded the River Maiden in the eerie mist.

The guarded Zarek barbarian, who was clearly of Ambrian descent, had been sleeping on her bedroll beneath the suspended sail cloth in the corner between the railing and the aftercastle of the vessel, and from there she could make out the silhouettes of Tamri, Niho and Darthon in the mist by the railing and hear them speaking in worried voices, quietly taking note of what was being said.

Why would a river captain be so stupid not to pay tribute to the River Goddess before sailing into the Davokar...

She got up and appeared next to them, walking carefully towards the railing, crow's beak in one hand and stiletto in the other, peering into the mist, alert and frightened. The spirits and monsters of the Davokar were very real, and only a fool would not be frightened in a situation like this.

Fenya the goblin has taken to sleeping on the main deck huddled against his wild pig Kverula ever seen since somebody complained of the smell (of pig or of goblin, it's unclear). Both are awakened by the yelling, and peek from behind a stack of crates. "Ssshh girl." Fenya says, leaning against his spear, peering into the mist while listening to the people talk.

Tamri shrugs at Darthon's query. Captain Ogval exits from his small cabin, saying, "Alright, that's enough lollygagging about." he sets the crew to looking for Arelo overboard, and asks of the PCs: "Why don't you curious lot look around for clues."

Eferneya keeps an eye out, but sees little other than the fog and the lazy water.

Fenya notices the goblin crewmember, Nigra, casting dark gazes and furtive glances at the other passenger, Harasto.

Darthon looks from Tamri to Captain Ogval, attempting to conceal the anger in him "Seems like we already have a clue worth finding out more about.". Both hands outstretched, he points at Tamri and asks the Captain "Who is the river goddess and what sacrifices were not made?".

The captain sighs. "I guess I'm just not that superstitious. My mother ran this ship for years and never made sacrifices to appease some snake god or whatever."

He does tell you what he knows:

The Legend of the River Maiden
There are many tales about the rivers of Ambria and Davokar, one of them telling of the River Goddess or River Maiden. The myth is told in many different forms but has the following basic features:
One early morning, a river fisherman harvested his fish traps and found an elderly woman in one of them. She had gills and she had apparently exhausted herself trying to get free. As the fisherman helped the women she asked to be let back into the water, but the greedy human asked for something in return. The woman suggested that his family always would get as much food as they needed from the river. The fisherman wanted more and asked that he should be granted food enough to feed the whole village. With a grunt, the woman accepted his request.

The next day, the fisherman made such a huge catch that all villagers could eat their fill. The joy was slightly clouded by one of the other fishing teams vanishing without a trace – nothing but their rowboat was recovered. The day after that, the lucky fisherman caught yet another motherlode, not as big as the first one but enough for all – since a second team of fishermen had disappeared. And so it continued: a big catch and missing colleagues, day in and day out, until none but the lucky one remained. Then the families of the lost fishermen gathered and forced the man to tell his tale, after which they flung him into the water as an offering to the angered River Goddess. The catches returned to their normal size and all the lost fishermen returned to their families without remembering what had happened. Ever since then, the villagers sacrifice a part of their daily catch to appease the Maiden of the River.

To Ambrians living by the slow rivers of the lowland, the River Goddess is a vague threat, something used to make children and landlubbers sit still in the boat. But among barbarians – and the Ambrians who travel the untamed rivers of Davokar – stories are often told about what happens to crews that do not respect the tradition of making offerings to the irritable Goddess of the river; stories about lone river boats, unharmed but empty, that come floating with the current until they get caught up in the mud along the riverbanks.
Dec 10, 2017 4:53 am
"You would do wise to believe that such tales are more than mere old wife's tales. There is more to the world than what meets the eye, and while some arrogant fool laughs at such superstitious nonsense at the tavern in his little village which he's never left, that same man cannot explain when an empty boat appears from out the mist, with no sign of where its crew has gone."

Eferneya stepped away from the railing and approached Darthon and Captain Ogval.

"The further into the Davokar you travel, the more real such tales become. Now, it may not be the River Goddess we are dealing with here, but whatever it is, it has claimed two people from off the boat already, and we should be on the lookout and make sure that this boat won't be one of those that come floating down the river without a soul on board."
Dec 12, 2017 4:46 pm
The captain waves Eferneya's superstition away. "I've traveled this river my whole life and I've never seen the River Goddess act this way. You are right, however, that there are other, real threats. If you value your lives, you'll help my crew look for signs of whatever has taken him and stop jawing about legends."
Dec 12, 2017 5:39 pm
With what Eferneya and the captain talked, Darthon decided to rush to his equipment, picked up his bow and hung the quiver to his belt. "It seems to me you guys are debating what is after us, but if there is something, I'd rather we talk about what we should look for." he said, looking around the fog as he walked back up to them.

"Hmph!" Clearly offended by captain, Eferneya turned around and walked away towards the stern of the boat. She still held her weapons in a tight grip and kept an eye out for any trouble, but it was nigh impossible to see anything through the thick fog.

She looked around the main deck and the cargo hold, looking for any clues to what might have happened to the missing crew members, and at the same time listening attentively for any signs of trouble or for any of the others to call out.

"His belongings are still here. Doesn't look like he got off the boat voluntarily." Eferneya moved cautiously towards the railing of the boat closest to where Arelo had been sleeping, looking for any clues as to what might have happened to him, all the while ready to swing her crow's beak at any horrid river creature that might suddenly jump up from the misty river and attack her.

Following Eferneya with his eyes and the bow raised, he glanced toward the other people around when she noted that the missing man propably didn't leave of his own accord. Darthon watched the woman move further towards the railing before his nerves got to him. Dec 18, 2017 5:46 pm
Darthon easily climbs to the lookout. Looking from above, he sees only that the ship lies bobbing outside the stream bed, far from the shore. (Care to make a Vigilant check from up there?)

Eferneya makes a cursory inspection of the area by the railing, but finds nothing before Fenya approaches her.
Dec 19, 2017 5:00 pm
Once he reached the lookout, Darthon climbed into it and looked around. He took the bow from his shoulder for the off chance that he saw something that attacked them and shouted down to the question he barely heard while climbing "Hold tight, I don't know yet!".

From the different vantage point, Darthon sees something on the railing on the opposite side to Eferneya and Fenya. From the distance, he can see only a mar or a smudge.
Dec 21, 2017 11:15 pm
"I don't know, Fen." Eferneya answered the goblin with the spear. "But stay on guard. Two persons have been taken off the boat while we've slept, and whatever took them may very well still be around."

Eferneya then called up to Darthon in the lookout.

"What do you see, Darth?"

Looking on for a while, in an attempt to discern what he saw on the outside of the railing, close to the others. He only snapped back to attention when Eferneya called out to him. Leaning against the mast with his ellbow he grinned down to her "I see many things, a roving band of lizardmen, a beach filled with stunning beauties and a castle on the clouds.", gesturing with the bow in his other hand into random directions, before finally pointing to the smudge he can't discern close to Eferneya "But what I can't see is what exactly that thing on the outside of the boat is, so be careful when you take a look.".
Dec 26, 2017 5:47 pm
Fenya's eyes go wide. Lizardman, stunning beaties, castle in the clouds! He tries to follow where Darthon points but doesn't quite know where to look.
Dec 27, 2017 2:27 am
Eferneya made a silent motion for Fenya and any others around them to follow her, and then she moved cautiously towards the side of the ship where Darthon pointed. Eferneya moved with the lethal grace of a silent predator prowling its prey, hinting that the barbarian with the red-painted forehead was an experienced huntress. Closer to the spot Darthon had pointed at, she motioned for the others to spread out and get at whatever it was that Darthon had spotted from more angles, to give them an advantage in an eventual fight.

Once the eyes weren't on him anymore, Darthon stopped leaning against the mast and acting cocky. While nobody was watching he had no reason to pretend to be more careless than he actually was. While the others moved to investigate the curious spot on the outside, he did his best to aim down with his bow and keeping his footing secure, afraid to fall down from the platform.

Eferneya points at the gouge in the railing. She moves closer to the railing, to a spot a bit removed from where the gouge is, attempting to move as stealthily as possible, to get a proper look at that side of the River Queen, ready to strike at anything that might suddenly jump at her from the mist.

With nothing exciting happening, the sense of danger slowly faded and led Darthon to climb back down from the lookout. "What?" he said loudly, focused more on the group than his climbing. To his detriment, he should have been more foucsed on climbing. Missing a foothold, Darthon slipped and broke almost into a fearful scream at the end of his question. Clinging to the handholds with all of his might and eyes clamped shut, only to realize when he looked down, that he had been on the bottom end all along, only a step away from the planks.
"How could a big piggy hit our ship." Darthon said in a joking tone, attempting to be humorous and distract from his accident. Smacking his hands together, he rubbed them as he spoke "So then, what do we have here.", more to himself than to the others, before investigating the gouge himself for what might have caused it.

Darthon hurries down the mast and makes an ungainly exit but sticks the landing. When he examines the marking he can tell that it is a claw mark, where some giant claw grabbed the railing. The exact nature of the beast alludes him.
Jan 9, 2018 6:34 am
After looking over the marking for a moment, Darthon's gaze wanders over his comerades, before he realized that they might want to hear what new information he was able to grasp. He pointed at different parts of the mark, while he rambled "The basic idea that something boney scraped along here seems right, though going by the directions of the wood splinters and the location of the mark, I have concluded.". A second long he paused to give his conclusion some more impact "It's bigger than Kverula. For sure.".
Jan 10, 2018 4:19 am
After examining the mark (you can tell that it is recent), you have exhausted the obvious clues as to what may be going on weird.

The crew makes way, steering the River Queen midstream and then along the way toward your destination. The day quickly grows hot, the light breeze that aids the craft's sails serving only to keep the bugs from settling on your skins.

Ashore, the forest seems to grow denser, more... seething, malevolent.

The River Queen continues, stirring the turbid water, disturbing who knows what below.

Anything you would like to do before the day passes?
Jan 11, 2018 8:07 am
Darthon spends most of his time at the front of the boat, trying to look ahead and spy some form of dock or similar thing in the distance. The duration of the ride and recent happenings made him uneasy and wanting to get off of the river, where thoughts of something coming out of the water to pull them into the depths made their way into his mind.

Nothing particular, mostly keeping an eye out, unless he is talked to.
Jan 12, 2018 6:06 am
Fenya and Kverula sit huddled in a corner, the goblin's eyes watching the others intently, particularly Eferneya.
Jan 14, 2018 5:53 am
When it became apparent that whatever took the two crewmembers and made a gouge in the River Queen's railing was no longer a present threat, Eferneya let her guard down a bit, but not completely. She decided to stay awake for a while and gathered Fenya and Darthon for a hushed meeting where she suggested taking turns sleeping as if camping in the wilds, if needed, not completely sure how far away they were from their destination - the inn where they were supposed to meet with their employer.

As the boat sailed deeper into the Davokar and the forest became denser and darker around them, Eferneya took up position at the bow of the ship next to Darthon, keeping a close watch on both river and woods. They were in the wilds now, in the Davokar where all manner of dangerous beings roamed and Eferneya knew all too well the importance of keeping a sharp eye out for whatever might prowl in the ancient forest, as surprises in the Davokar were rarely of the nice kind.

The day passes uneventfully but stressfully. The crew of the River Queen are resigned at best, terrified at worst, at the disappearances of their crewmates. The lunch meal is served without any pomp, and the other passenger, the trader Harasco eats quietly by the side while eating his stew and bread. He watches the forest line passing, and doodles images in his notebook.

As the evening curtain slides across the sky, pushing the sun to the horizon, the captain orders the crew to maintain course. Eventually, as the full dark of night robs them of sight, they steer for the sholes and make anchorage. As the sails are tied down, everyone looks anxiously around, serve an unremarkable evening meal, and begin to beddown.

Arelo has first watch for the crew, but if you are going to set your own watch order for the three of you, please do so. Night is about 10 hours long.

After Darthon switches watches with Fenya, crewman Arelo is leaning over the shoreward side, watching the shore and the lazy pull of the river.

Darthon moves up to the mast, perhaps pondering an ascent for part of his watch, when he hears Arelo yelp. Suddenly, he is struck from behind and two claws jam into him. He spins away, the second claw failing to find purchase. The first claw digs deep. Roll 1d4 for your armor to reduce the damage (from 5).

Before you is a crocodile sized salamander-like creature. Hideous, long eye stalks protrude from its amphibian head, and wicked claws sprout from its wide forelegs. By the way it is pulling on you, you know that if it landed the other claw, it might have pulled you into the water.

Fenya and Eferneya are asleep, but Fenya is awoken by the alarmed short of a Kverula.

Darthon may act. Fenya may act as well but is prone. Eferneya will need to make a Vigilant check to wake.
Jan 19, 2018 2:15 am
Wandering the deck, Darthon didn't notice the creature sneaking up on him until it was too late. The pain caused him to dodge away, turning and so barely managing to avoid a second hit. As he came face to face with the salamander, Darthon let out a scream, not unlike a pure maiden in need. "Eeeeek. Help, someone!" his voice rings out as he pulls the dagger from his belt and slashes at the thing to keep it away.

Strong 5-1 =4 - (1d20)

(20) = 20

Jan 23, 2018 4:09 am
The creature holds on, and snatches at Darthon with the second claw. Darthon now needs to make a test vs Defense -3.
Jan 23, 2018 9:07 am
His attack useless and unable to eascape, Darthon watched the other claw of the thing go at him again.

Rolls

Defense (13 - 3 = 10) - (1d20)

(7) = 7

Jan 23, 2018 2:28 pm
The second claw fails to gain purchase, but the salamander is slowly dragging you toward the railing (for dramatic purposes only, no real movement).

The party may all act, in any order is fine (strict initiative would be in order of Quick high to low, but for PBP, I like to be more flexible.)
Jan 23, 2018 4:11 pm
"It's taking him!!! Aaaahhhh!!" Fenya cries, desperately stabbing at the creature.

Rolls

Fenya's spear (Accurate 10), possible damage - (1d20, 1d10)

1d20 : (14) = 14

1d10 : (9) = 9

Kverula's tusks (Accurate 10), possible damage - (1d20, 1d6)

1d20 : (4) = 4

1d6 : (6) = 6

Jan 23, 2018 6:38 pm
Fenya's spear jabs ineffectually at the creature, but Kverula's tusk scores past the chitin armor. (2 net damage).

The creature's cumulative wounds seem to be verging on catastrophic.
Jan 24, 2018 9:11 am
Starting to panic because the beast wouldn't let go and he already saw himself taking an unwelcome plunge into the dark waters, Darthon once more stabbed at the thing, trying to finish it off "Will you die already!".

Rolls

Accurate 15 - (1d20)

(11) = 11

Damage d6 - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Jan 24, 2018 2:41 pm
Darthon's frantic attacks swing wide, leaving only Eferneya to save their companion.
Jan 27, 2018 9:07 am
Eferneya lunges at the amphibian predator with her crow's beak with all her ferocity and might, recognizing the direness of the situation. She aims her blow at top of the creature's head, hoping that the crow's beak will penetrate deep enough into the river monster's brain to end its vicious existence.

Rolls

Accurate 14 - (1d20)

(16) = 16

Crow's Beak damage 1d8+1 - (1d8+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

Jan 29, 2018 4:19 am
Efereneya's swing, perhaps trying to hit it too hard, glances off the creature harmlessly.

The creature, nearly overwhelmed, attempts to dine and dash with its prize. One defense roll and one Strong roll from Darthon, please.

Desperately trying not to get hurt any more, Darthon fights against the pull of the creature to his best capability.

EDIT: Mommy I love you ... crunch

Armor reduction 1d4 - (1d4)

The creature grabs a two-claw hold onto Darthon and pulls him to the side of the boat....(Darthon takes 3=5-2 damage, and is being pulled away toward a watery fate.)
OOC:
Darthon is getting wet... unless you can drop the salamander thing. As it withdraws from melee range, it provokes a Free Attack. Fenja and Eferenya can make attack actions.
Jan 30, 2018 9:39 am
"Putanginamo kang gagong hayop ka, mamatay ka naaaaa!!!!" a stream of goblin curses spills from Fenya's lips as he stabs.... and misses horribly. Kverula does a little better, goring the creature's side with her tusks.

Eferneya swings her crow's beak hard at the salamander creature again.

Rolls

(5) = 5

Crow's Beak damage 1d8+1 - (1d8+1)

Fenya's attack misses and Eferneya's attack hits but doesn't get past it's armor.

Kverula also gets an Free Attack. The crew have all been roused by the loud shouts and combat, and have weapons to hand as they circle the creature, but let's see if the sow can get the killshot...

OOC:
Kverulas attack added to my previous.

The battle boar bashes the battered amphibian, it's pointed tusks penetrating just barely enough to rout out the salamander's last Toughness point like a bloody truffle.

The salamander collapses into unconsciousness, shudders, and dies.

With some teamwork, you're able to free Darthon from the vice-like claws. He his sorely wounded, and requires treatment.

Ogval and the other members of The River Maiden first tend to Darthon's wounds, applying a Herbal Cure which restores 1d6 point of Toughness (Darthon to roll) under Arelo's novice use of the Medicus ability. They are overjoyed to see his life signs normalize, and treat him and you all, especially heroic Kverula, as heroes for the remainder of the journey. Ogval, to the cheers of his crew, offers you free passage on The River Maiden forever that it remains under their command.

Darthon, when finally upright, is able to identify what remains of the creature using Beast Lore. It is known as a Sly River Hunter and while rare, there are stories of such creatures attaching themselves to the keels of river vessels, attacking at night and feasting on its prey while in the water - in the water, they are much more fearsome foes.

After a few days, when Darthon is just about recovered (assume Toughness returned to full), a wooden pallisade comes into view. Ogval announces that is your destination, and they expertly moor The River Maiden up to the simple pier.
The adventure will continue in a few days in Chapter 2, but feel free to post further on this thread. I'll lock it when we're ready to move on.

Still feeling the pain after coming back to consciousness, the first thing Darthon did was get further away from the creature.
As he finally calmed down, Darthon stood and straightened himself up. He patted his clothes, the pained grimace barely hidden under a shallow smile "Well, this started out rather well. Let's preferrably not repeat that.".

Fear causing him to stay as far away from the Sly River Hunter, as he could, while investigating it, Darthon explained to the others his findings "Oh man, I have heard of those guys. They aren't common, but they hide under ships until it is dark and then come up to drag people into the water. Maybe we should figure out a way to check that there aren't any more around.".

Rolls

Herbal Cure 1d6 - (1d6)

(3) = 3
