Darthon's blade does not appreciably damage the creature. As to his escape attempt, stay tuned...
Jan 23, 2018 2:25 am
... he is currently gripped by a claw and must make a Strong test to break free. So roll against your Strong -1. If you succeed, you break free and your successful Acrobatics test gets you out of the way without the usual Free Attack from breaking away from melee. If you fail, you don't move away.

His blade skittering useless along the scales of the beast,
Darthon pulls away against the claws stuck in his side. let's see how the dice look for Darthon.

Rolls

Strong 5-1 =4 - (1d20)

(20) = 20

Jan 23, 2018 4:09 am
The creature holds on, and snatches at Darthon with the second claw. Darthon now needs to make a test vs Defense -3.
Jan 23, 2018 9:07 am
His attack useless and unable to eascape, Darthon watched the other claw of the thing go at him again.

Rolls

Defense (13 - 3 = 10) - (1d20)

(7) = 7

Jan 23, 2018 2:28 pm
The second claw fails to gain purchase, but the salamander is slowly dragging you toward the railing (for dramatic purposes only, no real movement).

The party may all act, in any order is fine (strict initiative would be in order of Quick high to low, but for PBP, I like to be more flexible.)
Jan 23, 2018 4:11 pm
"It's taking him!!! Aaaahhhh!!" Fenya cries, desperately stabbing at the creature.

Rolls

Fenya's spear (Accurate 10), possible damage - (1d20, 1d10)

1d20 : (14) = 14

1d10 : (9) = 9

Kverula's tusks (Accurate 10), possible damage - (1d20, 1d6)

1d20 : (4) = 4

1d6 : (6) = 6

Jan 23, 2018 6:38 pm
Fenya's spear jabs ineffectually at the creature, but Kverula's tusk scores past the chitin armor. (2 net damage).

The creature's cumulative wounds seem to be verging on catastrophic.
Jan 24, 2018 9:11 am
Starting to panic because the beast wouldn't let go and he already saw himself taking an unwelcome plunge into the dark waters, Darthon once more stabbed at the thing, trying to finish it off "Will you die already!".

Rolls

Accurate 15 - (1d20)

(11) = 11

Damage d6 - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Jan 24, 2018 2:41 pm
Darthon's frantic attacks swing wide, leaving only Eferneya to save their companion.
Jan 27, 2018 9:07 am
Eferneya lunges at the amphibian predator with her crow's beak with all her ferocity and might, recognizing the direness of the situation. She aims her blow at top of the creature's head, hoping that the crow's beak will penetrate deep enough into the river monster's brain to end its vicious existence.

Rolls

Accurate 14 - (1d20)

(16) = 16

Crow's Beak damage 1d8+1 - (1d8+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

Jan 29, 2018 4:19 am
Efereneya's swing, perhaps trying to hit it too hard, glances off the creature harmlessly.

The creature, nearly overwhelmed, attempts to dine and dash with its prize. One defense roll and one Strong roll from Darthon, please.

Desperately trying not to get hurt any more, Darthon fights against the pull of the creature to his best capability.

EDIT: Mommy I love you ... crunch

The creature grabs a two-claw hold onto Darthon and pulls him to the side of the boat....(Darthon takes 3=5-2 damage, and is being pulled away toward a watery fate.)
OOC:
Darthon is getting wet... unless you can drop the salamander thing. As it withdraws from melee range, it provokes a Free Attack. Fenja and Eferenya can make attack actions.

"Putanginamo kang gagong hayop ka, mamatay ka naaaaa!!!!" a stream of goblin curses spills from Fenya's lips as he stabs.... and misses horribly. Kverula does a little better, goring the creature's side with her tusks.

Eferneya swings her crow's beak hard at the salamander creature again.

Rolls

Accurate 14 - (1d20)

(5) = 5

Crow's Beak damage 1d8+1 - (1d8+1)

Fenya's attack misses and Eferneya's attack hits but doesn't get past it's armor.

Kverula also gets an Free Attack. The crew have all been roused by the loud shouts and combat, and have weapons to hand as they circle the creature, but let's see if the sow can get the killshot...

OOC:
Kverulas attack added to my previous.
Jan 30, 2018 3:25 pm
The battle boar bashes the battered amphibian, it's pointed tusks penetrating just barely enough to rout out the salamander's last Toughness point like a bloody truffle.

The salamander collapses into unconsciousness, shudders, and dies.

With some teamwork, you're able to free Darthon from the vice-like claws. He his sorely wounded, and requires treatment.

Ogval and the other members of The River Maiden first tend to Darthon's wounds, applying a Herbal Cure which restores 1d6 point of Toughness (Darthon to roll) under Arelo's novice use of the Medicus ability. They are overjoyed to see his life signs normalize, and treat him and you all, especially heroic Kverula, as heroes for the remainder of the journey. Ogval, to the cheers of his crew, offers you free passage on The River Maiden forever that it remains under their command.

Darthon, when finally upright, is able to identify what remains of the creature using Beast Lore. It is known as a Sly River Hunter and while rare, there are stories of such creatures attaching themselves to the keels of river vessels, attacking at night and feasting on its prey while in the water - in the water, they are much more fearsome foes.

After a few days, when Darthon is just about recovered (assume Toughness returned to full), a wooden pallisade comes into view. Ogval announces that is your destination, and they expertly moor The River Maiden up to the simple pier.
The adventure will continue in a few days in Chapter 2, but feel free to post further on this thread. I'll lock it when we're ready to move on.

Still feeling the pain after coming back to consciousness, the first thing Darthon did was get further away from the creature.
As he finally calmed down, Darthon stood and straightened himself up. He patted his clothes, the pained grimace barely hidden under a shallow smile "Well, this started out rather well. Let's preferrably not repeat that.".

Fear causing him to stay as far away from the Sly River Hunter, as he could, while investigating it, Darthon explained to the others his findings "Oh man, I have heard of those guys. They aren't common, but they hide under ships until it is dark and then come up to drag people into the water. Maybe we should figure out a way to check that there aren't any more around.".

Rolls

Herbal Cure 1d6 - (1d6)

(3) = 3
