OOC:
I don't know if I trust Yasi to do the right thing. I suspect he is a bit of a coward and would enjoy the chance to move up in rank. Maybe we can buy a "pass" to head out at our own risk?

My thoughts are that we need to know more about what is going on. We've severely reduced the number of hounds and have a better understanding of what tactics may be better, so we may be ok to push our luck. Returning to the camp just puts us under siege with no better information as to what really is assaulting the camp.

The thief who had been compelled to accompany the group stirs. He sits up in the cluster of ferns, holding the back of his head where Bryn struck him. He looks around fearfully, and confused.

Kray says:
"Monsters? Elaborate."
Thorn takes a breath, as if to say something, then exhales and shakes his head briefly at Kray as if to say Hold on a moment. He turns to Maeriks.

"Maeriks, what do you think about this Koral fellow? This is more than just getting hurt in a fight, isn't it? Tell us what you think so we can make the best plan." He nods at Kray, including him in the "us."

"This man is sick. He smells of goat insides. That man," he gestures in the direction the cloaked figure was last seen, "put dark magic in him. Something will change. He won't be a man next week, or maybe not a man even next day." He pauses and looks to Oram, then continues quietly "Its bad luck to have this man anywhere." He gives a short backwards nod of his head, discretely indicating the man should be killed. "It's bad luck."

Worrying himself with images of Phantom and the other Glaakieiou, flesh trees, and burning hounds, he steps in close to the group and speaks in a near whisper. "I think the others out there will be cursed like Koral. We should either leave and go far, or stop that dark druid."

He steps back and scratches his head and looks down at Koral. "It's bad luck" he murmurs.

Oram, following orders, has Koral over the shoulder and is moving out northward downhill.

Yasi has gathered up the thief, motioning him along impatiently and shoving him faster when he passes. Yasi is signaling everyone else onward as well.

Yasi nods to Kray, "We go, Lord. Back to camp. Danger here."
OOC:
A couple of items here and there, may or may not influence decisions:

Visibility:
The lighting of the whole area has dimmed to night darkness now. One circumstance that this experienced group can know is that with the three fires burning nearby, everyone's "night vision" is already blown now. This means that everything outside of the illuminated area appears very black now. So you would have to use torches and accept the limited range vision, or you would have to get further out away from the fires for quite a ways and for a considerable amount of time to let your eyes adjust back to the alternate focus that allows some perception at greater distance in low light, though small details may be less than optimal.

Predicted Schedule:
At the outset of the group march through Jara Hili, it was said that it would be about a 2.5 day hike. That means, if the schedule given was accurate, the group will make it to Gelshemish sometime tomorrow.

Macro Direction:
Although the travel group at the camp has been following a trail for the last few hours before stopping, it may not be right to assume that the group will stay on the trail, or that the trail even leads to Gelshemish. Overall, the group has been following a varied directional route, sometimes taking abrupt changes in direction and sliding shifts directed by the armsmen. There has been no effort to hide the fact that the route through Jara Hili to Gelshemish is a secret one, and that the armsmen have actively been making it a difficult pathway to remember, retrace, or anticipate.

Close Setting Estimates:
The camp was a short walk away, northward downhill, follow the stairs, take a left at the trail, goes right back to camp. Maybe it is overall a 1/3 mile walk. Far enough away where you can't hear sound or see the light of the fires, but not a long way's off.
Predicting the distance of the horn sound is difficult, can't expect great accuracy, but maybe 300 meters. Roughly speaking it is south and slightly west, uphill sort of at a right angle.

"I think it's a bad idea to let Oram take that breathing carcass back into camp with us," mutters Thorn to Kray.

Ivor listens to Maeriks' assessment of Oram with growing dread. Fucking druids. He's had enough experience - not just on Old Island but also back home on Nangh Stuc - to know this is very bad business. And what about those goddam hell dogs? Ivor's burns are still raw but he'd rather put his arm into the campfire than fight fucking druids, glaakieou, slugs and shit again!

"I'm with Thorn and Maeriks on this." Ivor growls to Kray.
OOC:
What (if anything) do I know of these Black Moon druids? From Ivor's extended backstory I'm only aware of Snow Owl druids, the Dunlev and Canuchan clans. On Old Island Rutcranna mentioned Black Druids, Vaden Druids, and Broken Moon Sigils but I think that might've been beyond Ivor's ken.

OOC:
Wow. Great thoughts. Such a direct hit on the fact that druid culture and the different identifiers among druids is so unclear.
Maeriks reference is to Black Moon Druids. That is how he was told the stories of the most sinister druid group in his community.
Ivor may not have heard of those specifically, but he can probably quickly buy into it that they are bad news, even among all druids.

There is definitely a general understanding in Dannein oral culture about the mystery and darkness of a Black Moon or a Dark Moon. Some say there is another moon hidden in the night, invisible to the normal eye, but those who use the most sinister of magic can see it and hear secrets from it. There is some inconsistency between different stories, about if the Black Moon is the remnant of the Broken Moon, Vaden, that broke apart centuries ago, the fragments of which can still be seen in the night sky. Some say the Broken Moon is the corpse that is dead, and that its dark soul became the Black Moon that is unseen. Others say that the Black Moon is instead what destroyed Vaden, and now the Dark Moon has taken Vaden's place in the sky and consumed the left over power that was dispersed.

For Yuoric ears, I think it might sound strange to hear that there are non-Dannein druids. Kray and Thorn would have grown up associating druids only with Danneins. Maeriks on the other hand I think is perfectly logical in identifying the phenomenon by what he knows, the work of druids. He is familiar with that in his community. He assumes anyone else doing these rituals in other communities are acting like druids, so the word used to describe them is druid. The nature of the spell is one associated with Black Moon druids, so it follows logically enough that it must be a Black Moon druid working here. The truth of the correlation of all that (if any) remains to be seen, but Maeriks' explanation seems feasible even if Ivor doesn't have background on the exact group.

Bryn tries to piece together what he saw during the battle and makes sure Koral is out of earshot "That cloaked... Thing... I have no clue what the fuck it was, when it impaled Koral in the stomach, he said something in Heshbaan about Koral failing him and that he is doomed to the pit. Whatever the fuck that means."

OOC:
Looks like it might be heading towards the idea of influencing the decision by Yasi to have Koral carried back to camp immediately.

If you guys are going to try to persuade, insist, intimidate, lie, etc. then send whatever skill roll is applicable for the style, demeanor, content as you see it. And just pick one person to roll, I don't mean the whole crowd has to roll. And with the language barrier, it seems like Bryn may be the pick you need unless you guys can convince otherwise.

Aid Another or Help? Always the idea to get Advantage. It really has to make sense that the person can really help or not, so if you are sales pitching that, talk about how it would go in a way that sounds realistic. I'm going to say that if someone is Helping, then they also need to have proficiency in whatever skill you guys are selecting.

Of course, you can take this another way and force the issue with Action, or just let things happen and see where they go.
That's fine too; the above is just trying to get a jump on the comms for the sake of organizing rolls and posts upcoming.

Oram keeps moving, carrying injured Koral. He is almost to the descending stairs and moving out at a steady pace. The egg thief is following Oram, at Yasi's direction.

Yasi is directing everyone to move out, back to the camp. He is getting agitated.
OOC:
Trying to push this along, so will cut to the chase:
Unless someone intervenes to influence the situation, Yasi is driving everyone he can back to the camp.
He's definitely not going to draw sword or use force, not a chance. But after a few more pleads and requests, he will shout and insist.

If he is ignored, he will eventually move out, leaving you guys behind.
When he does, he says that you are on your own, he is not responsible for your safety.
Furthermore, you are in violation of the law and you will be dealt with for your disobedience if you set foot into Gelshemish.
If you were to ever find and approach the city without being under the direction of the Sar's Armsmen, you will be in even an additional violation.
If you remain in the forest unattended, you will be considered intruders in the land of the Sar.

He would spit out this lengthy decree to Bryn in Heshbaan, demanding it to be translated.
After that, he would turn on a heel and leave to catch up with Oram (with injured Koral) and Eggy.

That's what happens if no one posts anything else for Action or intervention.

So, what happens next?

If there is no input for Action, I'm going to move forward tomorrow afternoon with an assumption that the team complies, though begrudgingly and a bit delayed, to Yasi's demand. They return to camp, plug in with the Gilded Armsman management of the overall situation, and will see how things develop from there.

Of course it goes without saying, there are plenty of other directions to take this. Up to you.

Before we decide, let's all remember J kills PC's. Don't know about you guys, but I'm not interested in making a new one ha. And I know for a fact that J subscribes to the "not every fight can be won by the PC's, and the PC's should make realistic choices."

Given the above:

So, we don't know what's out there. We shouldn't assume just hell hounds. Could just be some nasty random monster. Am I curious? You bet. But I'm not that curious. Kray came here with a plan to hit the Red Bastion and get some legit roots in the area, whether that be through criminal organizations, local governance, or ideally both. Also, for Kray, those men out there are on the job, knew the risk. Part of the job, and not worth risking our guys or leaving our camp undefended against unknown threats in a strange land.

Remembering the roots of Dark Thrones, what J has out there could just be part of the game world, nothing more, and just nad news.

Yeah, I'm curious. But I think we play it cool, go back to camp and keep a *close* eye on sick boy. We show up in to town without breaking the local laws.

Ultimately, what I'm saying is that there may be absolutely zero benefit whatsoever to going out there and checking things out. It could just be bad news and nothing but a distraction.

In sum, Kray is here to explore the crap out of this land, but he doesn't want to start it off by rolling into the local culture like a bull in a china shop. If I have to choose on the odds, risks and rewards, we let it go and secure the camp for the night.

Again, super close eye on sick boy. I'm already considering having Kray put him down.

A bit frustrated with the scene perhaps, the group does end the stalemate with Yasi and agree to return to the camp. It is a short walk back.

The camp is still on high alert, with most travelers set in defensive positions behind cover and the armsmen and able-bodied men on the lookout for incoming threats. There is no active conflict, however, and the group is received enthusiastically as they return.

Yasi takes command of the entire scene. Oram carries Koral into the central tent of the armsmen, and then quickly reemerges to rearm himself and get back into the defensive scheme with his fellow armsmen.

It seems like the archer that was previously assaulting the camp was run off by the armsmen who responded. One armsman was killed. Two others were injured.

Questions roll in relentlessly about what happened on the hill crest. Gibon, predictably, is among the first to seek an update. He and Amit are now instant celebrities among the common folk for being employed by the group of warriors who rode out alongside the Gilded Armsmen and brought back an injured Captain. Lord Medios also approaches Kray and tries to make a connection to get some news of what is going on.
OOC:
I suspect you guys would be tight-lipped about it, but let me know if you start recounting stories to the crowd.
Even though you guys say nothing, speculation and tale-swapping runs rampant in the camp almost immediately. Gibon can quickly relay that the bulk of the traveling workers believe that you faced the devil known as Iz Jeddriss. Most believe that the archer was likely Iz Jeddriss as well, because he can step through shadows and travel great distances through darkness. There is a fear that the injured armsmen shot by arrows will likely die soon of poison, though they seem to be recovering now.

The other theory is that you faced or saw a glimpse of Humbaba, a ruthless cannibalistic giant who lurks in Jara Hili, who is said to employ goblin-men as his servants and archers.

Soon you guys find yourself as sudden celebrities in this small circle. Definitely the talk of the camp.

At the same time, everyone is distraught that the rest of the wood-gathering crew has not come back. The fellows in their camp are clearly very worried and are making appeals as they can to the armsman to seek more info. In the end, they are silenced and must endure the uncertainty, fearing the worst. Several of them come over to your camp, very humbly, and ask if you might have any news about their friends. They beg to you, asking if you might help them somehow.

Ron Oram is still chomping at the bit to go back out into the woods to search for his buddies. He seems extremely at odds with Yasi, but he obediently follows orders to stand vigilant in the vicinity and guard the camp.

All the while, you keep a close eye on the tent where you know Koral is lying. No developments so far.

About an hour goes by, then you see and hear something coming down the trail from the east (direction from which you came when returning from the trip up hill)...
OOC:
have to break there, will try to get back on tonight. If not then in the morning. Feel free to send in details of anything you want to say or ask about the recovery time at the camp.

Your team campsite is on the eastern edge of the broader camp, so the Armsmen are frequently in you vicinity hanging out and watching outward, just as you guys are on self-imposed watchfulness.

It is fully dark now. That being said, there are some strategic fires placed on the outskirts of the perimeter, so visibility is not really too bad.

You see some people walking in on the trail from the east. It doesn't take long to recognize them as the wood gathering laborers. Several of them step into a jog once they see the campsite. Their friends come out to receive them as everyone begins to realize that they have arrived. Soon the camp is buzzing with the pleasant surprise.

Some of the laborers look fine. Others look somewhat...confused. Disturbed. At the back of the group, two of the workers are actually tied up at the hands and are being led into the camp by another laborer. The guy leading the group is not pulling them along roughly or like captives. Instead it seems that he is carefully supporting them and giving direction. The two men tied to the rope at the hands are seen to be mumbling too themselves and looking mostly at the ground as they walk. They are shaking their heads erratically and presenting troubled and strange facial expressions. It is somewhat like the look one associates with madmen.

At the very end of the line walks the Bearded Traveler (previously seen on the hill, previous to that seen on the horse riding on the road to Goelmorel). He carries over his shoulder one of laborer who is either unconscious or dead (suspect unconscious, no signs of injury). He nods to the group as he passes, though he does not speak.

The Armsmen nearby snap into action controlling and directing the incoming laborers. They circle with the Bearded Traveler and begin to ask questions to him as they walk together to the center of the camp. The traveler carefully transfers his carried patient over to the care of the other poor laborers who have come out to meet him as he walks up.

Ensha Yasi comes out to meet the traveler and instantly launches into a flurry of oration, which seems to be a barrage of both questions and demands. The Traveler, calm and quiet, does speak briefly to Yasi, animated and intense, but the exchange does not last long. Soon the Bearded Traveler refills water from a nearby source, shifts and resets his equipment, and the begins to walk northward into the woods.

Yasi begins to shout at the man, but it is of little use. The Traveler is soon beyond the reach of the light, heading south into the inky blackness that is Jara Hili this night.

Again, the camp is buzzing with enthusiasm. Great joy for the return of the laborers. Those who seemed distressed are being treated and attended to by their companions.

The rest of the night goes by uneventfully.

Nothing happens in the tent where Koral was placed. In the morning with the tent is broken down, you see Koral being attended by the other Armsmen. He still seems unresponsive. They are now placing him on a horse, strapping him in to be carried while unconscious, laying forward in the saddle resting against some padding and blankets set up as his legs are secured and tied carefully.

At first light, Ron Oram took off with two other Armsmen back down the east trail. He stopped by to see you briefly, saying that he has been granted a few minutes to see if he can find his two fellow Armsmen who are still missing in the forest.

He and the others are gone only a short time. Soon they return under sad circumstances. They are carrying their two friends over their shoulder and their armor carried in a large strapped bundle. It is soon exposed that both of the Armsmen are dead, one killed by a stab wound. The other severely burned.

This puts a mood of anger and strong vigilance on the Armsmen for the rest of the morning. Most of the travelers move around quietly, speaking in hushed whispers and going about their tasks with seriousness. Everyone finishes packing and breaking down camp. Perhaps an hour after sunrise, everyone is readying to move out westward on the trail at the direction of the Armsmen led by Yasi.

Everyone is on their guard. Very little talking going on.
Feb 8, 2018 12:22 pm
Oram has been staying in touch with you guys regularly. He comes over again to speak with you before the convoy is about to move out.

Leaning on Bryn to translate, he conveys the stories that have been gathered from the wood-gatherers who returned during the night. They all seem to be suffering from memory loss to varying degrees. Some continue to display strange behavior, like severe anxiety and paranoia. A couple of them are in a stupor. One of them seems to be stark raving mad.

Their stories have in common that they saw some sort of glow among the trees and then the silhouette of a cloaked man in robes. The next thing they remember is waking up in the care of the N'Hanum.
OOC:
N'Hanum is a reference to the bearded traveler. Meaning is not exactly clear, but apparently N'Han is the region or city from which he hails or is associated with.
The laborers say that they have glimpses of memories of being marked by the cloaked man, and that they heard the screams and moaning of the dead while they were in the darkness. They remember cloudy but horrifying visions of the faces of ghouls and rotten corpses.

Oram believes the cloaked and robed figure was definitely the devil Iz Jeddriss, who stole into the Red Bastion long ago and has been a secret lurking menace to the city of Gelshemish for decades. The stories of the captured laborers confirm it for him. That would also explain how they were perplexed by the archer shooting from all sides. Iz Jeddriss can walk through shadows, traveling great distances in a single step. He also has the inhuman speed of a fiend of the Underworld, and uses his cruel arrows to rain down doom, plague, and misfortune onto men.

When asked about Koral, Oram says that he is still alive, but has not regained consciousness. He is under some internal stress, and he has yet to drink water even though he has been sweating all night. He has swelling in his neck and there seems to be some sort of growth or swelling injury rising up in the back of his head and down the back side of his neck. The Bezil (Captain) is also making strange noises with his voice. His voice seems to be changing to some sort of buzz-like tone, and he is making nonsensical sounds in his feverish state. It doesn't look good.

Oram has been ordered by Yasi to take Koral ahead to Gelshemish with the horses, pressing on as fast as possible towards the city in hopes of getting Koral to some treatment.

So Oram will be departing soon. He wanted to give thanks again for backing him up last night. Though his two comrades were slain by Iz Jeddriss, he knows that you and he tried to intervene to come to their aid. And as god would have it, you were able to recover Yasi and Koral.

After wishing you well, Oram departs, back to the horses where Koral is being strapped in the saddle.
Again, Oram seems like a sincere guy and a devout soldier. You can tell that he seems frustrated, and perhaps a bit worried.
