The guy looks terrified, but he takes a drink.

He explains where Manshesh's shop is. It is a woodworking yard in Canals District. He has some workers there with him during the days. The details are clear enough that you guys and Gibon should be able to find the location by the description.

He does not know where Manshesh lives.

OOC:
Players' Club,
We're in this churn of city life mini-missions, which is fine with me. I'd like to see where they go, and I want to capitalize on some of the flexibility that they don't all have to be completely finished before another one can start.
As we did last week, I want to have a few pots on the stove at the same time. The timing and sequence may be a little overlap, flash forward, or flashback, but I think we can tolerate it. Keep an overall wave of info and developments coming in and keep us active instead of in a lull.

At some point, I'm sure all the small lines will merge and will be on one unifying event.

With that in mind, here's a review of what we have rolling:

1. Thorn doing a side meeting at the Hall of the Nasi social.
2. Kray and Thorn, after the party of the Nasi, investigating the reasons behind a guy following them.
3. Ivor hanging out with old gladiator buddies and helping in training.

Maybe #2 is finished, not sure. Could even transfer to #4 "Investigate Manshesh Carpentry shop"? Your call.

I'll send something out as a new development for the next morning. The other stuff already underway can keep rolling as necessary, or can fall away depending on how you guys respond.

Ron Oram arrives early the next morning, riding on horseback. He is looking for Maeriks.

He circles with whoever in the group is there.

"Koral, my cousin that you know who was injured, he is badly harmed. He is close to death, a horrendous death threatens him," he gets to the point. "That night, when we faced the devil's dogs, I experienced a miracle. I was bleeding to death, sure for the grave. And then..." He then falters a bit, getting ever so slightly choked up in his sincerity. "And then Maeriks the Dannein spoke and my wound was closed. My lifeblood did not pour out. I lived that night...when I should have died. And now I hardly have a scar to show for it."
He pulls back his collar to show that there is indeed no real sign of that injury.

"Even if it is hope beyond hope, still I ask. Please. Please permit Maeriks to come to the side of my cousin, my family. Could Koral perhaps be saved by a miracle?"
OOC:
OK. On this, he's asking for Maeriks to follow him to Koral, who is close to death.
Not sure if you are gaming, CB, so let me know.
If yes, then decide if Maeriks is ready and willing to go.
For everyone else, let me know if you are there and if you will join as well. Even if Maeriks does not come, Oram will accept anyone who is coming by to help.
Magistrate Balanser can lend a horse and chariot with a driver. It can accommodate about 3 people (in addition to driver). If any others want to go, they could get the directions and head that way. Would probably just arrive later than the chariot riding crowd.

Sound off if you are in on this.

All other items can proceed, even if out of sequence.

Interested in continuing Ivor's side-story, but unsure how to proceed. I hate hospitals, and so does Ivor. He's not going with Maeriks.

It is late in the day. Ivor has worked with Mamdouh all day, and all of the fighters are going back to their cells and barracks now.

In the equipment room, all of the fighters are in process of turning in their gear, downloading their armor. The slave masters are there directing things.

From across the room, Ivor hears some loud yells. A boisterous voice emerges and continues ranting. Eventually Ivor sees that it is a big Heshbaan yelling out and pointing to him. The man is rough looking, strong, scarred.

Ivor knows who it is. San-San.

Ivor had seen San-san fight off and on through the day, but his round helmet was on, completely covering his head and face. This now is the first time Ivor has seen him fully.

Ivor gets the translation from one of the performance managers, who relays the message to him.

"He says, "He hears you are a new trainer for his next victim. He says a better idea would be for you to fight him yourself instead of training the next man to die. He is trying to win the crowd, earn freedom from his sentence by replacing it with a full time job fighting here in the ring. He will never get that done fighting weak trash fighters. He says if you are no coward, fight him in the ring at the shuvael. He will strike you down, open your throat before his people and his god, and all will know that he is a champion. Prove yourself instead of hiding. Your death will be painful but glorious."

He does not know where Manshesh lives.
Kray notices Gibon's unease and motions for him to fill the remaining three cups. "Drinks all 'round. See. We're all friends here. And I like to keep my friends close." Kray drank deep, finishing the cup over several seconds, followed by another cloud from his spliff.

Up to this point, Kray's demeanor had been amiable. Friendly. He continued. "However, I must confess, I do not like keeping my enemies closer. It's an inconvenience, to say the least." Kray's demeanor turned cold, his eyes menacing as he drew a finger across the black obsidian knife on the table, his hand coming to a rest on the hilt, the potential clear. Three finger taps on the blade as Kray feigned deep thought, as if to measure and weigh his captive's future, and life span.

Kray was absolutely still now, as if poised to strike, hand still resting on the hilt of the Mozamyan knife.

"As such, I'm inclined to kill them." The friendly demeanor returned as he placed six gold coins in front of the man. "But we're friends, right? So don't worry about that. In fact, I'd like to set up a meeting with Manshesh. And you're going to do that for me. Half now, half later. Or you could simply do it as a favor. Seeing as we're friends now." Kray motioned for Gibon to cut the captive's hands free.

Kray is toying with this guy because... well, Kray has a sadistic side. If the man takes the money, Kray will cut his throat open and walk away from the table. Feed that bastard to some pigs or something.

OOC:
Oooo. I think I'm going to have to shake some Chaotic Neutral dice on this dish.
Good insight on this situation, a guy would read that the smart move is to leave the money and bug out.
BUT... he's only average smarts. INT Mod: zero. And not excessively insightful. WIS / WIS Insight Mod: 0
AND... this guy is poor and 6 Jeresian Crown Markes is a huge score.
PLUS... the messaging Kray sent had a dose of sarcasm, necessity to read between the lines of what he was saying, so to speak.
Not sure if that guy would get all of the tongue in cheek cynicism. Plus poor Gibon, trying his best, he's not an all-pro translator,
some of the mix of words and failure to capture tone, may have made the translation of ideas less than perfect. This guy might wonder if he should take the money to show that he works for Kray on this now.

Bottom Line: Will go with Insight Check. Success set at DC 12.

He makes it: he carefully moves out and goes to set up the meeting.
He fails it: he slides the money off the table into his hand, Kray slides the obsidian knife through the guy's carotid and trachea with a swift perpendicular slash.
Gibon and Amit shift over to pig feeding chores.

Suddenly, the burly San-san is hit in the back of the head and pitches forward. His legs are swept out from under him. Now San-san is prone on his back. He tries to get up, but Hamamid the Bishtu, knocks him unconscious with another lighting fast crack to the temple with a hardwood club.

The fierce Bishtu glares out at the other gladiators and servant who are still moving around in the equipment room. He shouts out, in Heshbaan, but with a heavy accent.

Ivor's assigned servant whispers a translation, "Master Bishtu reminds all, slaves and dead criminals do not speak unless ordered to."

"Now tell me, Sir Jeres, what is your real name, and what do you seek here at the City at the Center of the World?"
OOC:
X, I'm def willing/ready to adjust this if you think Thorn would have done a lot different. Like said, "Watch out, bitch! I ain't going upstairs with your stank ass!"
I'm just trying to press this along so that we can see a cool scene. If we wait for every question and answer playing back and forth post ping-pong, we'll be here til April. I'm using your Persuasion checks (both very successful so far) to steer how the talk is going and frame the opportunities.
OOC:
Ha ha! No I think you got Thorn pretty right. A lot of his life has been "okay let's see how this plays out" rather than super stubborn.
"My real name... My real name is Aemlar, but everyone calls me Thorn. As for what I seek?" Thorn shrugs. "Meaning," he says, almost offhandedly.

"You know my name, but I do not know yours. Nor whom you were expecting."
Feb 21, 2018 10:44 pm
Thorn watches the trailer carefully as the poor man listens to Gibon's nervous translations. For that matter, he monitors the translator as well.
OOC:
Watching to see how many of the trailer's thoughts are obvious through his facial expressions. Rolling an insight on Gibon, too, just to have all the bases covered. No insight check on Kray needed... Thorn has seen this movie before. It's a good one, but he knows what happens.

Thorn can't get much of a read on the trailer. The guys just seems blown away by the predicament he is in. When he is offered the coins and then Gibbon translates Kray's offer, the trailer seems torn in indecision for moment before scooping up the coins.

Gibon is just really nervous and intimidated himself as he conveys Kray's menacing threats. The Heshbaan laborer is sweating and stumbling over words. To Thorn it seems like just that: this simpleton is coming to realize that he has taken employment under a very scary guy. He seems to be struggling more with the language the more nervous he becomes. Gibon is just trying not to make a mistake and find himself on the end of a punishment.

"You know my name, but I do not know yours. Nor whom you were expecting."
She smiles as she drinks the wine. "I was expecting another one of my Korvaran guards of course, which is exactly what you look like, Aemlar," After a brief pause, she inserts "...Thorn."

She continues, "I know that all of you know so very much about the difference between each of your flags and separate yourselves into different armies and pick different kings for different ports, but the rest of us...", she smiles again, "we cannot tell you apart. You speak the same language. Why do not all Yuorics stand in line for one army, under one flag, under one king? None of us know that."

She lets Thorn answer if he will, but she does not really mind if he cannot answer or doesn't try. She quickly moves on to other things.
OOC:
Going to put the rest out more like a list. Long back and forth word for word would be cool for the movie, but too exhausting to type/post the screenplay. Ha!
She is Bandi. From Arokshas.
Do Jeresians and Korvarans ally, or are they at odds with one another?
The Korvarans have been here over a year now. Always so serious, regimented, forming lines to stand in among one another. They always want to talk about war and how to prepare for it. Are war and combat and standing in lines your favorite things in life in Jeres?

She zeroes in on the "seeking meaning" answer. Says that is clearly a dodge, but ok, she will play along. If that is the way you want to go, then you have to be prepared to follow through. No? Maybe later he can speak to her more directly. Why don't we start now?

What has Thorn's meaning been so far in his life? If a poet were to orate a song about you, what story would the song bring to the listeners?
What would be a good meaning going forward? Are you troubled about something? What did your father say about what a man's meaning in life should be?
(OOC: If Thorn says he didn't know father ... I'm just guessing here, maybe this doesn't go this route) That does not seem right, because you carry yourself as a man who had a very good father. She predicts he was wise and just.

Why do you pick to come to Gelshimesh for meaning? Are you religious?
What do you think of the Heshbaan god Goldna ad Dasnish? Do you know Marduk, the god whom the Hilleluat proclaim? They say he is the leader of all gods, that he fought the flood dragon Tiamat and won, and built the world from her bones. The Dasnishiat do not believe that! She laughs and drinks her wine.
Do your gods allow the sway of other gods, or are they jealous of your devotion to them alone?
Do you understand shuvael? It is coming in a few days. It is a time to make oneself right with Goldna ad Dasnish. Do you have obligations to reconcile with your gods?

She loves this city. Loves the Heshbaan people. She is afraid for the sons of Heshba, afraid that they will be drawn away to fight a war for Yuorics, who seem to want everyone involved in their wars.
She sees that the people of this city are becoming more warlike even among one another. It is a shame. Neighbors who have lived together for centuries, now ready to stab one another. Why is this do you think? Is this a blackness in the heart? Are the people of Gelshemish becoming more like Korvarans? More like Jeresians? Is this something that the Kings of the North can send with soldiers, carried in their flags? In their shields?

Meaning. She brings the conversation back, just saying that word and letting it hang.

Do you have a wife, Aemlar?...Thorn?
OOC:
So there is something to work with. To set the right tone (wish they had a font for the Top 5 tones of speaking), she isn't running the Spanish Inquisition here. The questions are provocative, philosophical, a little probing... she doesn't hide that. But they are presented with curiousity and likely a willingness to get to good conversation rather than surface level small talk. See what you will allow and indulge in. All the while, she is very attractive and her voice is soft and welcoming.
I'm going to throw out a Persuasion roll below, not to force any response or for any mechanics, just for something to think about and I think Thorn could see how good she is at speaking and getting people into conversation.
Bang. Critical, guy. Have we ever seen a result for any roll in the 30s?
She's also lighting you up with some Insight on full blast. Won't expose that roll, but...damn.

On the night before, after the Nasi Hall social , after the interrogation of the trailer...

Thorn and Kray check in on everyone. Bryn is the only one up. He has a lantern burning, hung on a high sconce. Spread out all over a table and on his bed are animal scrolls with writing on them. He also has a bound book opened on the table. They have seen Bryn reading through these before, but he looks like he is in a full study session at the moment. He looks focused and deep in thought.

When asked how it's going, he says fine. He doesn't seem to want to talk too much. He has a quill and a papyrus sheet and is etching notes in a thick, gummy burgundy-colored ink.

Leaving him to his study, they move on. Thorn notices that Bryn seemed a bit flushed and sweaty.
Feb 23, 2018 2:55 pm
"My lady, if a poet were to compose a song about Thorn, it would be a story with a prologue, and no more. I imagine it would entice the listener with grand possibilities and looming destiny, but in the end become mundane and monotonous. Do you know what 'Aemlar' means?" Thorn chuckled darkly. "It means hero. It means great warrior. And if you had been there as my father was raising me, you would have seen that you are correct in your assessment. He was wise. He did justice. He loved mercy. As I say this, I think it sounds like the start of a grand song. And yet I find myself here, having lived a life chasing violence. Injustice. Cruelty. Or being chased by them. It is hard to tell."

Their conversation continues. Ebbing and flowing. No, he's not religious. But the random, windblown way of life which seems the only one he is capable of living has drawn him to Yshala; if not a deep seeker, at least a dabbler.

They speak of Yuoric wars and the propensity of other peoples to get swept up in them. When she asks him why people who have coexisted peacefully for centuries now turn to violence, he recalls a few of Urdav's musings on human violence. Even people who live peacefully have the capability of violence always simmering beneath the surface. It just takes an event to bring it forth. Perhaps a resource which was in abundance is suddenly scarce. Perhaps a charismatic leader convinces a populace they need something they've never needed before. Or maybe a slow gradual shift in a culture's belief in the power of wealth. Thorn doesn't know the answer. And to some extent, it doesn't interest him. In the real world, violence exists, and he must deal with it. But up here, with this woman, a momentary respite.

He looks into her eyes. An uncomfortable feeling suddenly rises inside him; a worry that he might just give her the answer to any question she asks. How long have they been speaking? Kray might be wondering where he is...

"...No, my lady."
