Meet me in Phandalin (22-24th Nightal, 1491 DR)

Jan 9, 2018 1:01 pm
You are in the Coastal city of Neverwinter and have been contacted by your friend Gundren Rockseeker (Dwarf Miner). He has hired you and a group of adventurers to escort a wagon to the mining town of Phandalin, a couple days travel southeast of the city.

Gundren was noticeably excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip. saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You and your party will meet on the 22nd day of Nightal in the year 1491 DR and begin your trek to Phandalin.

24th Day of Nightal, 1491 DR

You have spent the last couple of days traveling south on The High Road out of Neverwinter and have just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
OOC:
Everyone please go ahead and introduce yourself to the group. As you all have been traveling together for a few days you should at least know the basics about each other...name, race, class...maybe why you are heading to Phandalin...maybe not, or just how you know Gundren...up to you
Jan 9, 2018 8:24 pm
You've all met Leylin right before leaving Neverwinter. He is of a moon elf (also called as silver elves by some people) race, medium height (171cm), pale lilac skin, blue hair and bright blue eyes. Leylin wears finely made studded leather armor over traveler's clothes, that is usual combination for adventurers and mercenaries. Besides shortsword on his hip and light crossbow strapped to a backpack, he carries a lute, that he plays quite a lot. He is not exceptional musician, but has some skill.

Leylin will happily take reins of the vehicle if needed and chat away with anyone who is willing to share. He will tell you about his journeys around Sword Coast, mostly about taverns, ale, wine and music. Leylin is a very good listener, but when noone is talking - he is happy to speak himself or, if he isn't driving, to play some music.

If anyone asks how he ended in this group - Leylin will tell that Gundren is a friend of a friend and he also was in need of some coin lately.

Best keep our eyes open. I may not be from these parts, but I've heard tales of bandits around here. Names Amaris, by the way. My blue eyes dart back and forth amongst my companions. I brush my hair out of my eyes and prepare my bow in case we encounter trouble.

Leylin drives the wagon of supplies. Amaris rides shotgun bow in hand. the rest of the party can either walk alongside the wagon or ride in the back...there is room enough for everyone along with the supplies.

[ +- ] Sariel
Sariel, a raven-haired young half elf with old eyes, rides in the back of the wagon, conserving her energy. She wears ashen, trail-worn clothes resemble those of a soldier's on a rough campaign. Wrapped around her is a cloak that looks like it was once azure blue, but the splendorous colour now only shows through in patches.

Sariel gazes out of a rip in the wagon's canvas cover at the passing countryside. Interesting to see the Sword Mountains from this side for a change she thought.

She had recently come from the forest of Kryptgarden on the other side, where she had been recruited to fight in her uncle's crusade against goblinkind for the last three years. Though triumphant, her uncle was slain in the final battle, and once again Sariel was all alone in the world.

As her uncle's company disbanded and returned to their families, Sariel felt like she was losing hers. But it wasn't the first time she lost a family, and she moved on. Die, migrate, or adjust - those were the only three choices in the world, according to her uncle. She wasn't ready to die, and she didn't know how to adjust, so she migrated - north, to Neverwinter, in search of problems you could solve with a sword. Maybe (she dared hope) a new family.

As it turns out, the Rockseekers were in need of swords, and they hired her as a caravan escort. She knew the job well; she did competently and they paid her fairly, but it wasn't enough. That black stain on her soul wasn't going to scrub off escorting mining gear. Yet, the most miraculous thing happened to her: last night Lathander, her father's deity, came to her in a dream and told her of a desecrated shrine deep in goblin territory.

Seek Sister Garaele, in the town of Phandalin, the vision told her.

In the morning, she heard Gundren was mounting another expedition - to Phandalin! Never a believer in conincidences, Sariel signed up immediately.

Are my father's gods watching me? Could this be my chance? But, not wanting to get her hopes up, she downplayed the potential for redemption.

Worst case, you add a few more goblins to your head count, she reasoned soberly.

But although she was certain that killing goblins made the world a better place, deep down she suspected that even if she killed every goblin in the world her soul would still be damned to the Shadowfell.

Sariel has so far enjoyed Leylin's company. The closest thing she's heard to a minstrel since joining up with her uncle was Stink Pete singing bawdry ballads with an out-of-tune harmonica, so to hear the moon elf's beautiful performances truly bring her in touch with that part of her soul that is good. She occasionally tries to sing along, quietly so that nobody can hear how bad she is at singing.

She opens up pretty easily with Leylin and shares some stories from the campaign. Mostly the happy ones or the funny ones, like the time old Sir Joriel lost his beard to his own alchemist fire, or when Flange the Dawn Rogue picked the lock on the supply cart and they ate like kings before the final battle.

When Amaris pipes up, she responds:

"Bandits, yes. Good thinking Amaris. We should probably be doing a greater show of force. Sometimes just seeing an extra sellsword on the wagon can make them count the odds too poor."

She produces her arcane focus, a smooth, jet-black stone, and creates an illusion (minor illusion) of the top of brutal looking half-orc with a huge greatsword sticking out from the top of the wagon, as if keeping watch.
OOC:
From the intro I wrote, Sariel would have definitely shared with everyone her history in the Kyrptgarden campaign and possibly stories about the war if they were relevant or requested. People would know she is in the employ of the Rockseekers, and she would have also shared her vision of Lathander, partially to offset any ill omens or bad feeling that Sariel gives off (re: her background).

She would not have shared any information about her family history, other than her father was a Paladin of Lathander. In the morning she invests her weapon in private (via the Hex Warrior feature), and won't draw the hence-blackened blade in front of her new companions unless she has to. Astute observers may notice the weapon is of Drow design.

[ +- ] Rymente
Alongside the wagon walks the man with a permanent smile who seems to never be happy. The only things known of him is what was told to you by Gundren; he was admitted to an asylum at a fairly young age, gaining his freedom by escape, Rymente Copac, 24, human, male. The way Gundren spoke of him felt as if he was reciting paperwork, not information he gained by conversation.

The only interaction, if you can call it that, is his counting; every minute he can be heard mumbling to himself "Five hundred thirty-eight thousand, five hundred sixty minutes." Occasionally, he'll look to his shoulder and shush before continuing "Five hundred thirty-eight thousand, five hundred sixty-one minutes."

Since you've met him, you haven't seen him eat, whenever you've see him he has always been awake, and either his breathing his very faint, or you haven't even seen him breathe...just counting minutes. Despite this, he doesn't look starved, he doesn't look exhausted, and he doesn't show to be lacking oxygen.

Leylin approved of Amaris' ambitions and enjoyed Sariel's stories. He even tried to put some of them into musical form. As for Rymente... The part of the "escaped asylum" was obviously unexpected. Especially for such person to be assigned to be a guard. But Leylin wouldn't let it bother him for too long and concentrated his attention on more joyous things.
OOC:
Worth noting that when Leylin isn't meditating - he almost 'radiates' some kind of soothing energy that brings hope and comfort to anyone around him.
Also, while he's driving the supply cart - there is loaded crossbow lying near his feet at all times. From the moment they left Neverwinter's gates he is ready for trouble.

There is supposed to be a 5th member of your group but they have not communicated in a few days. If they don’t chime in by tomorrow morning/midday I will move the story along.
The wagon you are escorting is pulled by two oxen. When no one is at the reins the oxen come to a complete stop and graze. They are very well trained.

The wagon is packed with an assortment of mining supplies and food. This includes a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks and crowbars (about a dozen each) and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about 50 flasks in Volume).

There is still enough room on the cart for four to ride in the back with the supplies and the two up front for six total.

Leylin please make a history check.

Leylin: Prior to leaving Neverwinter You made some inquiries into Phandalin as well as the route they would be taking to get there in a small tavern. You heard a few different tales. There was talk of orcs and goblins along the Triboar trail, bandits as well. A particularly drunk patron kept shouting about the giants starting to run amok. Another spoke of a young dragon taking up residence in the ruins of Thundertree to the east of Neverwinter. However One old timer entertained you with a tale about the lost mine of Phandelver:

More than 500 years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as Phandelvers Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wonderful cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (the forge of spells) where magic items could be crafted. Times were good and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.

A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human Wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave ins and tremors, and the location of the Wave Echo Cave was lost.
Jan 11, 2018 1:01 pm
"Bandits. Orcs and goblins were also seen around this path as well as some rumors of giants. But I wouldn't put much faith in the later, although greenskins can be considered a possible threat."

After saying that Leylin looked over the shoulder to his companions in the back.

"Better stay on your toes while we're out here. The good news is that Phandalin is about one-two days travel from here, so we just have to hope that we won't run into any trouble in that time."

Leylin flashed his infectious smile with those words and flicked the reins to make oxen move a little bit faster. It was probably a futile effort as those lazy animals were moving at a very steady pace the whole journey.

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either site.

By pulling the reins Leylin brought the cart to a stop.

"Well, Amaris, my friend - it appears that your prayers were heard."

And while he was saying that, Leylin picked his crossbow up and looked over to Sariel and Rymente.

"Anyone mind taking a look over there while me and Amaris will cover you? Better safe than sorry. Amaris, right side of the road is yours, I'll watch the left."

@Sclasclemski Amaris is riding shotgun, not Sariel, fyi. Also, if Leylin is looking around on the left side of the road - do I need to make a roll?

"Sounds like we have a hero in our company, Leylin!" Sariel gently teases, trying to sound genuine about it.

Hero or coward, it don't matter when you're face down in the mud. her Dark Consort whispers inside her. Ever since joining up with Leylin, the Dark Consort has been mercifully quiet.

A shiver passes over her. If her Dark Consort is whispering, danger is near. Then she sees it up ahead; the dead horses.
Kuroi says:
"Well, Amaris, my friend - it appears that your prayers were heard."

And while he was saying that, Leylin picked his crossbow up and looked over to Sariel and Rymente.

"Anyone mind taking a look over there while me and Amaris will cover you? Better safe than sorry. Amaris, right side of the road is yours, I'll watch the left."
She listens to Leylin's words, adrenaline starting to flow through her veins.

"I have a bad feeling about this." she says, and she looks down to Rymente to make sure he's responding to what's happening.

"Hey Rymente Copac 24!" she calls down in a loud whisper. "Trouble ahead! Do you understand me?"

She turns back to Leylin, and says "What, you mean me? I'm not just going to walk into a trap." Sariel dons her shield, adjusts her sword belt but draws her arcane focus instead of her rapier. She gives her torso a shake to makes sure the chain shirt isn't bunching up, and then she cracks her neck left, then right.

"They probably already have eyes on us, and the advantage. Let's hope they're stupid. Are we ready?"

After giving everyone a moment to prepare, she raises her black stone and summons an illusion of a vulnerable dwarf warrior with weapons holstered and shield strapped to his back as close as she can to the horse carcasses (range: 30 feet, so probably down the road about as far as that pile of rocks).
Jan 11, 2018 5:54 pm
A big smile crosses my face. Aye Leylin, the gods smile on us today.
Jan 11, 2018 6:21 pm
It is hard to tell whether he is distracted or following the wishes of Leylin as he continues walking, his mumbles can be heard as he trails off "Five hundred thirty-eight thousand, five hundred seventy-five minutes." He turns his head back "Yes, I know, I'm not an idiot." While his head is turned facing the wagon, his eyes portray a different story, it does not seem he is responding to Sariel and it is no longer hard to tell he is simply following Leylin's request through coincidence. It does seem that he has some coherency in the situation though, as his body is encased in a dull light that disappears as it seeps into his skin, and those with a keen eye will notice his chest moving--a steady breath in and out.

While saying that Leylin tightens his grip on crossbow, ready to fire the second goblins make any aggressive move.

Sariel's vision has always been poor; bright light always bothered her eyes (probably her Drow heritage) but even her dark vision was not as reliable as Elven eyes. She trusts Leylin is telling the truth, and acknowledges the danger with a nod.

After saying that Leylin moves to the south into the woods and it appears like he's almost not touching the surface of the earth while doing this.

Leylin’s shot just misses the goblin archer. A tricky shot considering from this distance and angle the goblin is about 3/4’s covered by the brush. After noticing the arrow shot just miss the archer stands and screams Lets kill these meat sacks! He takes a step forward and takes aim at Rymente and fires an arrow of his own.

The blast of energy flashes towards the goblin. He lifts his head up just in time for it hit square in the face knocking him right off his feet and killing him instantly.

The goblin on the North side of the road, after seeing his ally struck down beside him charges towards Amaris and takes a swing with his short sword. "Aaaaarrrgggh" The strike finds its target but Amaris is able to save himself a mortal would by dodging. The sword cuts a slice along his arm appearing to be mostly a flesh wound. Blood quickly starts to leak from the cut.

As a bonus action the goblin is able to disengage and back up about 10’ after making his Attack.

Leylin will gather their arrows and give them to Rymente.

"You use them, right?"

At that moment some may notice that aura of hope and joy around Leylin had disappeared and he looks more solemn.

"I see no bodies of the riders and those four didn't have anything that didn't belong to them. Amaris, you look like a person that can read tracks in a forest, care to look around?"

After that he turns to Sariel:

"I'm sure there's more gobs somewhere and Gundren might've been taken prisoner. I'm not planning on leaving without doing everything in my power to rescue him. Not to mention that he is the one who is supposed to pay for our services. Without him we won't get paid."

Ok excellent. You all may begin travelling down the goblin trail in the order you indicated.
Jan 16, 2018 3:47 am
As they begin down the path, Sariel can't help but feel a little uncomfortable with Rymente right behind her. It unnerved her that he had his own Dark Consort riding in his mind; he even had some form of magical attack not unlike her own, but instead of darkness it was made of fire. But he seemed far more under its spell, far more gone than Sariel. Was this to be her fate, too?

She turned to him, after a ways, and said "Rymente, may I ask you something?"
Jan 16, 2018 8:53 am

"Hey, just so you know, we all got our secrets and yours are none of my business and that's that. But we're going to go kill some goblins together and I make it a habit to get to know the people I'm fighting beside."

She pauses for a moment.

"Actually, I never learned to tell time on the clock. I mean, I just look and see where the sun is in the sky. The seasons seem to do a good enough job of keeping the years straight otherwise. But, I'm tired of people looking at me like an idiot when I tell them I don't know. So, maybe you could teach me sometime?"

Ever since Leylin's song, she's felt upbeat and refreshed, and her Dark Consort has been blessedly silent. She supposed this was how normal people always felt. The sun even stings her eyes a little less than usual.

Sariel appreciates how methodical and intuitive Amaris seems to operate. It reminds her of how their scouts would operate back in Kryptgarden, and her uncle always spoke highly of their skills.

At an opportune time, Sariel says "Amaris, your skills are as good as any I've ever seen."
OOC:
Damn it's nice to have a Ranger in the party!

"Secrets? No. Secrets cause worry and worry is no good. But what you are looking for, I cannot answer--for that is a question for yourself; I can distinguish friend from foe, the answer to who you are to me is up to you." Rymente mimics Sariel's pause and lingers on it for a bit longer "Now I have a question for you. What is a clock?" He quickly turns to his shoulder "That wasn't a stupid question...You can't tell time on a hit, that doesn't make any sense...See, it wasn't a stupid question." He turns back and looks at Sariel expectantly.

Scanning as you walk you don’t see any additional tracks then the dozen or so goblins that you know have used this trail.

After about 10 minutes down the trail you discover a crude snare trap in the middle of the path. Clearly laid by the goblins to discourage unwanted followers.
Jan 16, 2018 9:24 pm
I hold my hand up, motioning for everyone to stop moving. Trap. I say, pointing. Who can disable it?
Jan 16, 2018 11:23 pm
Sariel shrugs her shoulders, confused by his response. But, at least they were talking. Just as she was going to describe her uncle's clock, she halts at Amaris's discovery.

"Does Amaris translate to Eagle Eyes in your language? Well done."
OOC:

I wouldn’t trust the area around the trap and if we set it off, that’s too much noise. I also recommend we limit our talking from here on out too. Too many ears in the trees. I say, hushed.

Despite the confidence he showed, Leylin wasn't completely sure in himself when he attempted to disable the trap. But the goblin's "craftsmanship" was so primitive that all his worries disappeared momentarily and with just few movements it was done. He silently exhaled and got up on his feet, turning to face his companions with a confident smile.

Nodding to Amaris' words Leylin allowed the party to move forward and assumed the rearguard position. While moving he adjusted his steps and breathing, attempting to erase all traces of his presence...

With great agility Amaris is able to grab hold of a low hanging tree branch and swing himself to safety narrowly avoiding the 10’ fall to the bottom of the pit that opened up. The pit is roughly 6’x6’. The rest of the party is easily able to work their way around the pit and continue back on the trail once again.

Following the goblins trail for roughly five miles from the scene of the ambush attempt, you come across a cave in the hillside. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow path leads into the cave on the right side of the stream.

The path entering The cave is pretty narrow. At the cave opening itself. You would have squeeze in slightly but at its widest it appears to be roughly 5’ wide.
Jan 19, 2018 1:57 am
Looking at the cave and its surroundings Leylin whispered:

"With a bit of a runner start we can easily cross that stream, but what concerns me is that even dumb goblins would have some ... preventive measures around their encampment. Traps, signal systems or even some guards. I sincerely hope it's just some easy contraption..."

Pausing for the moment, Leylin continued:

"I might try to sneak up to the entrance, but my experience with detecting traps is ... inferior to the ability to remove them. "

Fear has clearly taken hold of the small goblinoid and has even begun to shake slightly as it fears for its life. He slowly begins to speak in broken common.

Klarg is leader. Klarg is nasty bugbear.

Maybe 20 Goblins in cave maybe less. Klarg also has pet wolves.

Klarg receive messenger goblinfrom King Grol few days ago. Messenger tell him someone named Black Spider paying Cragmaws to watch for Dwarf Gundren Rockseeker. To capture him. To send him and his things to King Grol. Klarg follow King Grol orders. Dwarf and things are sent to Cragmaw Castle. Human in eating cave.

She tacks on, with a smile,

"Sure, Amaris, justice sounds great. Just make sure you rain those arrows on them first."

Sariel makes her way to the mouth of the cave to peer inside with her darkness. She supresses a smile - Lathander's vision was coming true! It was unfortunate that Gundren was so much danger, but maybe this was part of Lathander's plan as well.

Do not inform anyone of our presence. You are no longer a goblin, you are a survivor. Do not sully that or I will find you," He draws his dagger and runs it across the goblins cheek, drawing a bit of blood "And I've grown quite fond of cutting things." He removes the knife and takes off the ropes then stands, staring at the goblin.

Sauriel: Peering into the dark cave is difficult even with Darkvision as the sun is high in the sky currently and prevents your eyes from adjusting to the darkness found within. What you can see is that the narrow path inclines slightly as if continues into the cave.

ALL: The Goblin stares around stunned at the situation. Thank you. Me will run. Thank you. He looks behind him at the thicket and then back in front as if he would love to run but sees Leylin and Amaris currently blocking the open path. He seems very unsure on how to proceed. He then starts trying to push himself through the thicket.

Sariel returns from the cave to report what little she saw, and hears the discussion about letting the goblin go.

"Rymente, what the fuck? Goblins aren't people, they are a scourge upon our world! The best reward you can give a goblin is a clean death. You think he's not going to betray us because you asked him not to? There might be other ambush teams out there he's going to meet up with and hit us from behind. If we go in that cave, we are going to kill all those the goblins. Are you prepared to do that?"

When Rymente drawn his dagger Leylin almost went to stop him, but stopped the moment the ropes were removed. He nodded to Amaris, but the moment he heard Sariel's words, his face sunk.

"What do you mean, 'not people'? He's a living, intelligent creature. He thinks and he feels. One thing is to do battle, but he fulfilled his end of the deal and I intend on honoring mine. Although my idea was to bind him to a tree and release when we exit the cave, but I don't see a problem with letting him go now."

Leylin moves away clearing the path for goblin to escape into the wilderness.

"I do not like killing. If it's possible - I would prefer not to partake in it. But I also do not shy away from it when need arises."

While saying that Leylin looks at Sariel with dissaprovment in his eyes.

"Amaris's habbits with collecting trophies is one thing, but this bloodthirst from Sariel... Damn, she's just like those Sun bastards."
Jan 24, 2018 8:25 pm
The Goblin makes his escape into the forest heading Southeast as far as you can tell anyway. For now all you can hear is the steady sound of the stream as it leaves the cave mouth.
Jan 24, 2018 9:57 pm
Rymente spins around, getting in Sariel's face "Do not strike that tone with me on matters you know not! I do not care if he betrays me, I made the ramifications of that course quite clear to him. If he wishes that path, he will not receive a quick death, I will make him wish that we killed him here, I will make him regret his betrayal, I will make him no longer fear death but pray for it," He holds up his dagger, a few streaks of the goblin's blood still coating it, right in between his and Sariel's face "and I will know it is him. What I won't do, is kill something that was forthcoming with all it's answers; if it felt the need to be silent, I'd have no trouble making that silence take permanency." He lowers the dagger to be equal with Sariel's throat and locks eyes with her "If your course is to kill those you interrogate after they give you the answers you seek then you are no less of an enemy then what awaits us in the cave."

"It's done. We move on. Leave your differences for when we all get back to Phandalin. Right now we have a mission before us."

After saying all that he gives everyone a stern look and pauses. Leylin's face slowly relaxes and he closes his eyes and exhales.

Leylin As you enter the cave mouth the path in front continues to incline along side the stream. The ceiling rises sharply about 20’ tall. You can see the odd stalagmite peppered on the path ahead of you.

Almost immediately to the right you can see a few uneven stone steps leading up into what appears to be a small dank chamber. Listening over the sound of the stream you can here the sounds of snarls and rattling chains coming from close within the chamber.

Looking farther down you can see the main passage from the cave mouth climb steeply upward, the stream plunging and splashing down its west side. In the shadows, a side passage leads west across the other side of the stream.
Jan 25, 2018 12:20 am
Sariel looks at both Leylin and Rymente like they're insane, and her eyes narrow at the drawn blade. She does not flinch at Amaris's arrow.

"It told us about the cave, so what? Even in that act, it was betraying its own people! Made it easier for us to go in and kill its kin, just to save its skin. You call this cowardice a virtue and then want to reward it. I would have had more respect for it if it told us nothing."

"I can only hope that going in these caves will purge you of any notion that goblins are anything but monsters."
Jan 25, 2018 1:28 am
"I have no quarrel with killing; you, goblins, dwarves, orcs it makes no difference to me, if it needs to be done I'll do it without a second thought. My problem is with tying them up and interrogating them, straining them, making their last moments draw on and on; if you are going to kill them anyway just do it, don't subject them to torture." Rymente shoves past Sariel, checking her with his shoulder as he passes her.

Leylin emerges from the cave's entrance and describes what he've seen and heard.

"I think it's safe to assume that there are wolfs in the chamber that is closest. There were sounds of chains, but if we agitate them... Anyone can deal with animals quickly? Charm them or put them to sleep?"
Jan 25, 2018 5:08 am
Sariel doesn't back down.

"I've shown you three times that my way is to kill them quick and clean, including killing the one that tried to kill you. And each time I killed one there was no suffering, no pleasure taken. It was Leylin's idea to take it prisoner. He tied it up with his own rope. So go shove your knife at his throat if you hate taking prisoners so much. Oh, and who sliced a chunk off its face? You did. So shove the knife at your own throat too, you hypocrite."

"We could try feeding them a snack. Oh look, here's some meat."

Sariel raises the arm of the headless goblin corpse.

"Or does that offend anyone's delicate sensibilities?"
Jan 26, 2018 12:52 am
Rymente slows his gait before stopping completely and turning back towards Sariel "While tying him up was pointless and the course of knocking it out and leaving it tied to a tree was a bit much, release was still his intent. I targeted you because your actions offended me, not because you kill them, but because you needlessly put fear into it with your goblin-head-on-a-stick trick then argued about killing it after it did everything we asked. You believe goblins are a scourge, I don't give a fuck what it is, replace it with whatever you deem fit for "people-status" and my reaction will be the same. I'm not ignorant to what goblins are, I've had lots of time to read, I know what they are; in fact, I hope it betrays me, I hope it brings more here so I can kill them. That is why I marked it, a light cut to identify it, hardly a chunk."

Rymente raises his dagger and places it on his throat then begins to dig in, blood slowly begins to seep out. He takes a step towards Sariel "But I'm the bad guy in this situation huh? Let me guess, you've never been on the opposite end of torture, never had to appease someone just so you can squeak by death or beating." He tosses the dagger to the ground "I don't have to take your shit as you look down on me as if I'm a lesser! Eight years! My only physical contact with people were when they would drag me into a blindingly, bright room, tie me up, and ask me questions. I would answer truthfully and they'd beat me then toss me into my cell where lights were just as forgotten as I was. I grew tired; tired of the whips, the sticks, the paddles so I appeased them. I answered with what I thought they would like to hear, the opposite of what I knew was true. They beat me for lying, saying I was still 'fucked in the head' and that there was no way I believed the things I said. Then they noticed my frown, they said 'Hey cheer up boy, there's always next time. Let's see that smile." He runs his fingers over the scar that runs from his cheek to the corner off his mouth "They both laughed as they took turns cutting into my flesh with a blade, for no other reason than frowning. Where do you think those men—who are 'people', who aren't the scourge upon your world—are? I'll give you a hint; they aren't running free, unbound, through a forest like that goblin. But what do you care, I'm the monster here, right?" He turns, leaving his dagger, and begins walking back towards the cavern, talking at his shoulder "Please, not now, I just wish to count..." He trails off, mumbling to himself "Five hundred thirty-eight thousand, six hundred seventy minutes."
Jan 26, 2018 1:49 am
Listening to Rymente's outburst:

"For Oghma's sake... Now I get why «escaping an asylum» wasn't an issue. And it's as Master said, «You can trust beast or monster to always be true to its nature, but you can't always trust in nature of the people.»"

Leylin cleared his throat and intervened.

"Let's focus on task at hand - we have cave with twenty goblins, about half dozen wolves and a bugbear to worry about. First - wolves. It's hard to sneak around them as they can probably smell me from around the corner. «Snack» idea wasn't a bad one, but it doesn't guarantee a success as it can be snatched by one wolf, while others will try to go at us. I do know some tricks that can appease them, but it's, again, just a theoretical knowledge as I never tried it. Ideas?"

Sariel's anger cools as she listens to Rymente's sad story. While she brooks no disrespect, she realizes this fight isn't about her. After his story, she realizes she was holding her breath the entire time.

I can appreciate the struggles of a prisoner.

She wants to reach out to him, to tell him her own story, about her black blade and blacker future. About why killing goblins is so important to her. But now is not the time. Best let him cool off.

The darker part of her wants to remove this unstable madman from the dangerous task at hand. He may have already compromised the mission with his crazy behaviour. But for now the light side is still stronger within her heart, and that part believes that maybe helping Rymente find justice, or at least peace, would be worth more in her balance sheet than all the goblins in Cragmaw.

Die, migrate, or adjust.

She responds to Leylin's call for calm, figures its a good a place as any to adjust.

Snack idea not bad? Too bad we don't have more goblin corpses she starts to think in her head, but she knows better than to say it out loud.

"Well, if Amaris is willing to part with his trophies we'd have enough. Or we could quarter the one corpse, toss a limb to each dog. An offer of food might make your fancy knowledge work a little easier."

As you reenter the cave you come around the corner where the steps rise you are immediately smacked in the face with the stench of animals. The savage snarls and sound of rattling chains increase as threee wolves see you. Two are chained up just inside the opening. Each wolf's chain leads to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite. As you look past the animals you notice the cave narrow to a steep fissure at the far end of the chamber.

"Unless you plan on fighting in the dark as well," she whispers. "Your call."

She gives Rymente and Amaris a moment to make their decision about the torch, and then gives Leylin a nod.

"Good hunting" she whispers in Elven to him, then charges up the stairs attempting to take the group at the top by surprise.

You inch your way carefully up the path in the darkness towards the sound of the waterfall. Amaris in the rear holding the unlit torch. When you cross under the bridge you all stop. Using silent signals Leylin,Sauriel and Rymente continue forward as Amaris begins a countdown in his head to light the torch and continue forward himself.

As you reach the top of the steps the path opens to a cavern half filled with two pools of water. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pool, which drains out the western end of the chamber to form the stream that flows out of the cave mouth below. Low fieldstone walls serve as a dam holding the water in. A wide exit stands to the south while another smaller path leads west. The sound of the waterfall echoes through the cavern making it difficult to hear.

You see 3 Goblins standing guard by the pools of water. They don’t seem to notice you.

Energy beam- As an action, you target one creature you can see within 90 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage (your choice).
The talent's damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).

Amaris's arrow lands safely between the two far goblins - G2/G3. They all freeze for a moment unsure of what to think as Sauriel comes charging forward striking G1 in the back cutting a deep wound down the center of its skin exposing bone as it passes through. At the same time an energy beam comes from Rymente's eyes aiming right at G1 who attempts to dodge the attack. Leylin bears down on the farthest Goblin who looks ready to run as soon as he saw the flaming arrow hit the ground. The arrow passes through the goblins upper torso ripping away meat and skin leaving him screeching in pain. Sauriel then notices a 4th Goblin appear from the passageway just to his Southwest (1sq down, 1sq left)

The arcane energy erupts from Sauriel and hits G1 hard in the side of its abdomen. The blast tears open a hole in his side. He momentarily drops to a knee in pain. Rises back up in very rough shape.

G1 charges forward and ends up next to Rymente on the steps leading up into the twin pools area. He takes a swing with his short sword while G2 dashes past G1 to also get up next to Rymente (the extra movement needed for him to get up close negates his attack). Rymente casually dodges the blade, not even really acknowledging the goblin just moving when needed to avoid the strike. As if he could hear the blade cutting through the air.

Meanwhile on the bridge the two Goblins spotted by Leylin charge forward and take a cautious defensive stance as they reach the end of the bridge. (Dodge action)

As you head down the narrow tunnel you see a feint light up ahead. As you inch closer you are hit with the pungent smell of poorly cured animal hides and unwashed goblins. The air is hazy from the smoke of a cooking fire. From your line of site you are looking you cannot see anyone in the cavern. But you can see that the large cave is divided in half by a 10 foot enscarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge.

Two of the goblins look in pretty bad shape and you recognize them as the two that managed to escape you. To the left on the elevated portion of the cavern, you spot another goblin holding the barely conscious form of who you recognize as Sildar Halwinter. The goblin holding the lone human speaks.

Leylin was leaning against the wall while reloading his crossbow and breathing heavily. He disliked skirmishes, especialy the ones in closed spaces. But alas, it was what it was and he moved back into the cave. Noticing that one of the goblins is subdued, Leylin shifted his gaze towards Yeemick...

Rymente stops moving and the music ends. He holds his arm up, allowing the arrow to rest in the air above. With another quick, shrill whistle the arrow returns to his grasp.

Speaking in common now Yeemick points to the southeastern corner of the cave. Your gear and the Elf's gear is over here, the other human's stuff was taken by Klarg when he took the Dwarf..

Seron is relieved of his bonds and after retrieving your equipment The Sheild and Seron now have their weapons, armor and adventuring gear.

Sildar, who is pretty rough shape still, picks up one of the dead goblins scimitars. This is mine now. He walks towards the rest of the party. Speaking quietly now to the group I can respect the need to parley but I can't agree with leaving these bastards alive. The raids by these goblins needs to end. So...you had asked me about Gundren. To be frank, I don’t know exactly where he is but I have an idea. Which I will get to, but I think it’s time you learned a little bit more about why Gundren asked you to make this trip to begin with and why he was the target of the attack that led us to our current situation.

The three Rockseeker brothers, Gundren, Tharden and Nundro recently located the entrance to the Long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the Phandelver’s Pact.
[ +- ] Phandelver’s Pact

Now, I overheard a few of the goblins mention that Klarg, the bugbear leader of this goblin band, was given orders by someone known as the "Black Spider" to waylay Gundren and bring him to the "Black Spider". Unfortunately I have no clue as to who or what this black spider is, but Gundren had a map that showed the secret location of the Wave Echo Cave and I believe that Klarg sent it and Gundren to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place call d Cragmaw Castle. I don’t know where that is but I’m hopeful someone in Phandalin will know.

Now the reason I am even involved is because I have a contact in Phandalin. A human wizard named Iarno Albreck. He is a member of the Lord’s Alliance, like myself. He was sent to Phandalin two months ago to help establish order but we never received word from him so I decided to join my good friend Gundren on his trip back to Phandalin and investigate myself.

Seron after gathering his things had gone through his pack. In particular going through a stack of papers meticulously, thumbing through each one while Sildar told his story.

There was a dwarf here that came with him shortly after I arrived, he was taken away as soon as they got here though. He pauses a moment putting his pack on his shoulders. I guess since no one is willing to truly introduce themselves. I'm Seron Valerum, hired to escort supplies to Phandalin from Yartar. When we were overrun by these goblins, this Hobgoblin and I were the only ones to survive unfortunately. I believe they intended on eating me. He stands putting his hands on the hilts of his swords on each hip shifting uncomfortably. I told them I didn't taste any good, but I don't think they speak any intelligent languages.

Sariel listens to Sildar's story, which explains more than a few things. This 'Wave Echo Cave' and the 'Forge of Spells' if it was for real, was no minor find. Gundren and his brothers really stumbled on something big!

When she hears Sildar utter the term 'Cragmaw Castle,' her heart leaps.

This is the path Lathandar put me on. For it to intersect so clearly with my life is no coincidence. These are the wheels of fate turning, and I'd better be careful not to get crushed.

She watches the exchange between the elf named Seron and the hobgoblin. She's not accustomed to trusting a hobgoblin, but for some reason Gundren did and that gave her pause.

The stakes were much higher than she realized. This Forge of Spells was big, and taking Cragmaw Castle was likely not going to be easy as this romp through a goblin warren. She placed a hand on her wounded side. Easy, huh?

She would need allies, and anyone that Gundren trusted was a good start. Maybe they could start with killing that bugbear together, see how the group shakes out. She reaches out her hand in a gesture of friendship to the newcomers.

"My names' Sariel. Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. Sign of the times, eh? Glad we arrived on the scene in time, but looks like you had things under control." She motions to the melting shards of ice.

"You sound eager to kill that bugbear, and I'm right with you on that score."
Mar 3, 2018 6:09 pm
Feeling better now, with some more rest Sildar chimes in again. Yes and once Klarg is dead I would ask that you all escort me to Phandalin. There is no telling if there are more goblins out traveling the woods or bandits or who knows what. I would not ask you to do this out of the goodness of your hearts. Once we reach the town I can provide 10gp for each of you as thanks for rescuing and escorting me the rest of the way.

I shrug and follow the party. I'm no good alone if I can't see in the dark. I don't like secrets though. I make sure to collect any arrows I can. I make sure my bow is on me tight and my swords still sharp.

The party crosses the bridge and reenters the area with the waterfall.

Side note...in total darkness people with darkvision still have lightly obscured vision which is a -5 to passive perception and disadvantage on perception checks that rely on sight.

"I say we light torches just before we go in the bugbear's lair. Go in slow, cautious-like, watch for surprises. Our human compatriots will be far more effective if they can see, and Amaris has the best eyes among the four of us anyway. Sound good?"

Gu'lorg waves his staff and free hand in a pattern around him, from front to back, speaking in Goblin, and touching his leather belt.

Gu'lorg is looking for signs of danger along the trek. He is going to step next to the bottom-most boulder, peering between it and the wall at the pathway to his right.

Mar 6, 2018 7:25 pm
OOC:
Kuroi is correct

From players Handbook p183
A given area might be lightly or heavily obscured. In a lightly obscured area, such as dim light, patchy fog, or moderate foliage, creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. With Darkvision you see as if it is Dim light when in total darkness(which it currently is if no torches are lit)...anyone with darkvision currently should roll perception with disadvantage until they get into an area that is at least Dim Light.

@Sclasclemski I presume the "R" on the map is for the wolf? Since Klarg was the bugbear's name. I also assumed that Leylin would be somewhere in the square to the left of Sariel. But if he couldn't peak inside from there - that's fine.

Mar 8, 2018 4:02 pm
As the mystical hand appears and throws the rock down the steps, Klarg and the goblins stand up in surprise and turn towards the stairs to see the Dwarf standing there staring up at them. Klarg says something to the two goblins, that you are unable to make out and they both pull out their swords and charge the image. Running full blast, G2 is taken completely off guard when he goes to swing his sword at the dwarf only to not hit anything solid. His momentum carries him forward directly into the illusion and suddenly face to face with a Half-elf and a Hobgoblin. Back inside the cavern Klarg takes a step forward with his pet at his side.
OOC:
You guys can get a surprise round on the goblins as they are completely focused on the dwarf and don't notice any of you.

From your vantage point Klarg has 3/4's cover but with saving face you do hit.
From the other cave a bolt of lighting shoots between Sauriel and Sildar, mere moments after Leylins arrow. The bolt of energy hits Klarg and he lets out a loud roar as the lighting surges through his body. Sauriel and Sildar can actually smell the bugbears fur begin to burn as portions of his skin start to become visible.

Klarg shakes his head while the magical energy still surrounds him. Unable to attack the one responsible Klarg swings his morningstar at Sildar...and he nails him square in the bare chest, causing blood to begin pouring out of him. At the same time his wolf pet, Ripper, comes along the other side and bites at Sauriel...making purchase in Sauriel's forearm, tearing flesh.

As soon as Amaris's blade whooshes past Klargs head the lighting energy once again erupts around him, again he loudly screams in agony as more of his body hair is burned away from the electricity coursing through his body. Blood begins coming out of his mouth and even the corners of his eyes have started to bleed.

Sariel spits out a mouthful of blood as she rises to her feet. She sees Sildar getting to safety out of the corner of her eye - good. At least she distracted these assholes long enough for him to get away. But Seron was still down, and Amaris in the fray.

Her dark consort whispers in her ear:

Retreat, child. No point in losing your life to aid these strangers! If you die now, just think of where we end up for all eternity!

She inhales, slowly. No. I'm done running. Besides, they need me.

She calmly pulls her blade and shield up and gives Klarg hell.

You find nothing on the bodies of the bugbear or goblins other than their armor and weapons.

Checking out the contents of the cave itself you see stacked in the corner several sacks and crates bearing a symbol familiar to Gu’lorg. It is that of the Lionsheild Coster. These are the supplies that were taken when his and Serons caravan was hijacked. Among the stacks of crates and supplies you find an unlocked treasure chest with the following contents:

600cp
110sp
Two potions (unidentified)
A small jade statuette of a frog with tiny golden orbs for eyes
Mar 13, 2018 10:55 pm
Rymente stares past Sariel at the bodies strewn about the room, he absentmindedly ties the arrow back onto his belt "I will be outside." He turns and begins to make his way out, faint echoes spread throughout the silent cave 'Five hundred thirty-eight thousand, seven hundred and two minutes.'

"We are killers, not healers. But nobody can deny that we are good at what we do."

Sariel wakes up, feeling a peacefulness she hadn't felt in awhile. She had faced her Dark Consort, told it fuck off. She had wrenched control of the dark powers inside of her and used them to do something good.

For the first time in her life, she was not afraid of the darkness within. In fact, she wanted to play with it. She leaves the group in the early morning light and finds a little grove to see what she can do.

She had long been able to weave minor illusions from the the shadow - like the dwarf decoy that had long served her against stupid goblins - but what about more tangible things? She reached out to the sea of shadows in the trees and grass around her, and wove them into a cloak around her. Black as midnight, lightly billowing in the wind. Without really trying, black bracers formed on her forearms and a black circlet wrapped around her temple. She touched them with her hand; they were solid but ethereal at the same time. She did not recognize the designs inlaid on the shadow-things she had conjured; what part of her mind had they come from?
OOC:
This shadow armour represents the Fiendish Vigor invocation where I can use an action to gain 1d4+4 temp hp. Sclasclemski: When time is not an issue, I assume it is okay if I just take 8 temp hp as opposed to rolling over and over until I roll a 4? If I used it in combat as an action, I would definitely roll.

I'll invoke it now and gain 8 temp hp.
Pleased with the success of her first experiments she reached out to all the shadows around her, creating bigger and more beautiful things: a white stallion, a stone bridge, a mountain of golden treasure. She reached out to her outer limit of strength and erected stone walls from the shadows around her, making a makeshift fort 15 feet in all directions. She waves the flags as if blowing in the wind, and raises and lowers the portcullis with her mind.

At last, she summoned an image of her father. Tall, strong, and proud, standing guard against unnamed evil in shining armour. She reaches out to touch his cheek, but the illusion dissipates into wispy black smoke.
OOC:
This is Sariel's Misty Visions invocation at play.
