No problem either way you rule, Jabes. I'm fine with holding to the dice for better or worse too, but no doubt being up and ambulatory is better every time v. being unconscious and making death saves. Ha!
In practice I usually lean towards throwing dice and their chaos rather than using the prefab numbers. Sometimes I shift over for the sake of speed.
I THINK those prepped numbers are factored as average rolls on each die and then totaled up with Mods, but I can't say I've ever done the math on a sample set either to check that idea. In that case seems like they could be sometimes better / sometimes worse when compared to manual rolls.

The rolls listed in the book are the average of the rolls + the modifiers. At most, they are .5 damage off for those situations where the average is something like 4.5 and they have to round it off.

When scoring a critical with those average rolls, don't double the damage. Do the static damage and then roll the dice for the second amount. This is important because while the average damage includes modifiers, the critical damage should not. If you double the average damage, then you will end up doing more than you should.

This is good to know! Thanks, Nate!

Wow, Naat: you are the man. Your superpower is grokking RPG rules.

And Jabes: this fight is hella cool!

*Blush* Thanks! It's pretty much my favorite thing to dissect the systems that I play and learn how they work and why :)

And I agree, this is a really cool (and unexpected) fight. Your lead-in to it was masterful and I'm super excited to kill this stupid thing!

Man, I can't wait till I get 2 levels of Barbarian and can just use reckless attack to take away any source of disadvantage. The Guiding Bolt was a good stand in though!

I will post the turtles' actions tomorrow, and resolve PC actions already taken. I know HypCo is busy, so if we haven't heard from him by then I will also take his action for him. Then it's top of Round 2.
CancerMan says:
Dancing himself out of the writhing mass of tendrils, Ybus backs away until he reaches Don-Yi by the water channel.
Oops, I missed this before. That movement would've drawn an Opportunity Attack from the Mouther. If it hits, and you fail the STR save, you would go Prone, reducing that movement to a crawl (half speed, I believe). And your attack roll for the Guiding Bolt would be at Disadvantage. Are you sure you want to move away?
Jun 24, 2018 5:35 pm
Sure, I'll take that risk!
Jun 24, 2018 9:18 pm
Okay. To speed things up could you go ahead and add a STR save and 2nd attack roll to your post? We'll disregard them if they turn out to be unnecessary. Thanks!

Shifting around the Monster's edge to mitigate area effect attacks.
Something went wrong, and you disappeared from the map. I put you and Erden back where you were originally. Go ahead and edit you location.

Really sorry for being so busy and distracted I haven't been able to resolve your actions in a timely fashion. For the same reason, all this housekeeping has been coming from me piecemeal. I know these two things combined have caused this battle to lose the momentum and tension that I so carefully built up on the approach to the scene. C'est la RL. I'm lucky to have you guys as players the kind of guys whose posts move the mood & narrative forward. I do hope in the next few days to find the mind space to handle things better. Thanks, guys!

Gotcha Jabes. I've made the change again, it was probably my fault. I'm going to assume I did not properly save it.

And no sweat about the timing, Jabes. These big battles are a ton of work to run! Honestly I've been wrecked by life and work as well, especially this weekend ... up to 2am doing report every night for the past few nights. You may have noticed my slowness in other games as well. So I have appreciated the pace, actually!

Also, I don't feel like the tension / momentum is broken at all. I imagine that most PbP veterans are excellent at emotionally bookmarking a scene and keeping the momentum internally alive. Otherwise it would all go to shit! It helps when you love your character. My head cannon of Baracus is pretty rich. At some point I'll send you some thoughts I've had about him. I find that really fills me with joy as a DM when a player is enjoying their character a lot, so I want to share those thoughts with you. Your game has inspired a Mr. T knock-off character to be more. However, neither of us have the time for that right now so I'll leave it for a more opportune time.

Thanks for everything Jabes!

ps - I fixed the map.
Jun 25, 2018 8:45 pm
That's real encouraging, Len! Thanks. I love all your characters and it makes me happy that you are invested in them and in the story.

Thanks for fixing the map! I don't know if it's a good idea but I'm making a new sheet every round.

I was holding the OA while we didn't yet know how the Gibbering would affect the turtles. In the end Ybus was the target - fortunately the OA missed!

Ditto on Myche's attack on Rydler.

I was hoping to post the top of Round 2 but it's 5AM so I will have to ask for your continued patience.

Thanks, guys!

Coming down with something so I think I'll turn in early (11PM). Hope to feel better and post tomorrow. Thanks, guys!

Glad to hear it Jabes!

Feel free to hand us a Ninja Turtle each to manage in the combat if you want to free up some Dungeon Master RAM as you're healing. Assuming parameters: [prioritize fellow turtle survival, witty referential comments, don't die]

DMJ says:
OOC:
Yo, Jabes. Was wondering if you might allow Urban some Movement to add to his previous round after he (and I) can see the positional results of his other actions?

A quick talk-through while looking at the Grid Map:
1) After freeing self to Move by successful Save vs. Aberrant Ground, I think Urban took a step over to F13/14 in order to shield shove the monster to the north.
2) After the success of the Shove was clear, new paths were open for Movement. Urban would want to react as much as he can to get to Barracus and Erdan.
3) Hoping that Urban could have kept moving. It is Difficult Terrain, so 3 squares. F13/14 (already mentioned) to G12 to H11. If you can't move 2 diagonals in a row, then maybe F13/14 to G12 to H12 at least?
4) Avoiding OAs all the while. Urban is staying within adjacent squares throughout Movement, not trying to withdraw.
5) I know that relocates Urban from "out of" Aberrant Ground into remaining in the thick of it again, but I'm ok with that.

Possible?
I don't see a problem. I'm not missing anything, am I?

What a fantastic idea! Why didn't I think of this?! Yeah it'll lighten my load, but more importantly I think it'll be loads of fun!

Okay here is a breakdown of the last few posts. TMNT actions for Round 2 have been resolved and the results recorded. A couple of times m4 was selected as a target even though Don-Yi had already killed it (probably because I had been unable to remove its token from the battle grid) so I just went ahead and applied the attacks to whichever target made sense.
Quote:
Round 2: Lio
• DEX save vs. acid burst: 3 vs DC 13: FAILED. 5 acid damage.
• STR save vs. Aberrant Ground: 16 vs. DC 10: SUCCESS.
• WIS save vs. Gibberring: 15 vs. D 10 (disadvantage roll: 5): FAILED! SUCCESS!
• Talwar attack vs. m4: HIT. 8 slashing damage. Spawns m6!
• Flurry of Blows: scratch 1 ki.
• Unarmed strike 1 vs. m4: MISS.
• Unarmed strike 2 vs. m4: HIT. 6 damage.

Round 2: Don-Yi
• Starts turn outside Aberrant Ground and Gibbering AoE.
DEX save vs acid burst: 7 v. DC 13: FAILED. 5 acid damage. Is out of range when acid burst occurs.
• Spear haft attack vs. m4: HIT. 10 damage. KILLS m4.
• Flurry of Blows: scratch 1 ki.
• Unarmed strike 1 vs. m6: HIT. 6 damage.
• Unarmed strike 2 vs. m6: HIT. 7 damage.

Round 2: Myche
• Starts turn outside Aberrant Ground and Gibbering AoE.
DEX save vs. acid burst: 14 vs. DC 13: SUCCESS. Is out of range when acid burst occurs.
• Throwing star vs. m6: HIT. 7 damage.
• Falls back 10ft.

Round 2: Rafiel
• DEX save vs acid burst: 10 vs DC 13: FAILED. 5 acid damage.
• Kattar attack 1 vs. m3: MISS.
• Kattar attack 2 vs. m3: HIT. 5 damage.
The following PC actions for Round 3 sent in advance are in the bank, but the situation may change as the mini mouthers take their actions. Notably, starting in Round 3, all WIS saves against Gibbering will be at DISADVANTAGE because of the number of mouthers present. Save DC's for all effects are unchanged.
Quote:
Round 3: Baracus' saves
• STR save vs. Aberrant Ground: 8 vs DC 10: FAILED.
• WIS save vs. Gibbering: 10 vs. DC 10: disadvantage roll required.
DEX save vs acid burst: 11 vs. DC 13: FAILED. 5 acid damage.

Round 3: Ybus
• DEX save vs acid burst: 3 vs. DC 13: FAILED. 5 acid damage.
• STR save vs. Aberrant Ground: 14 vs DC 10: SUCCESS.
• WIS save (disadvantage) vs. Gibbering: 14 vs. DC 10: SUCCESS.
• Two-Handed Spear vs. m5: HIT. 10 piercing damage.

Round 3: Urban
• DEX save vs acid burst: 3 vs DC 13: SUCCESS.
• Shield attack vs. mm: HIT. 10 bludgeoning damage.
• Shove attempt: 16. Possible 9 damage.
• STR save vs. Aberrant Ground: 21 vs DC 10: SUCCESS.
• WIS save (disadvantage) vs. Gibbering: 14 vs. DC 10: SUCCESS.

I've added Ybus' disadvantaged WIS save to my original post, just so we can keep the rolls together. FYI, got a 14.
