This thread is for players who have a specific monster that they'd like to fight. Let me know what you'd like to try and kill and I'll run an encounter for you.

Wulfram - LVL 1 fighter LVL 4 Warlock

I would like to run through a few rounds of goblin encounters or any other low level monster.
First round with a single enemy and then two of the same type and then three of the same type.
If I can make it through that then lets have 1 goblin and 1 hobgoblin. Then a round with 1 goblin and 1 bugbear and then move on to like 2 goblins and some goblin war chief.

Short rests in between major combat rounds

I have not finished his backstory yet so I cannot comment too much on motivation but Wulfram is a proud and stubborn noble born who does not believe he would ever need the help of others. The fiend Wulfram has made a pact with demands blood to be shed by any means necessary.

I would go SOLO just to learn the mechanics of play by post and get into the hang of narrating my actions, if anyone would like to join to practice also that would be OK but I would like to keep the party small so we can keep combat moving.

i wouldn't mind, it would help me figure out the mechanics of the captain america type character. that i've been trying to build for the past 4 months..

also i believe combat is 1 post per day reguardless the group. so 1day = 1 round?

A dusty and travel worn young man walks into the empty arena towards the other two. Wearing brown travelers clothes and carrying a backpack with a tankard in his hand, the red haired man looks out of place next to the armed and armored combatants next to him. "So is this where ya go ta find out what kind of a man you are?" Draining his tankard, he drops it into his bag and pulls out two new full tankards of ale. "Ma name is Cailean, I'm pleased to meet ya. Can I interest you two in a pint before we get ta the fun bits?" Cailean holds out the two tankards towards the other two with a grin.

Wulfram has spent most of the previous day checking through his gear to prepare for battle. He wakes at sun rise and makes his way to the area with determination. As he enters the arena he walks to the middle of the clearing and waits for further instructions.

He is standing at attention when the other combatants arrive. A dusty and travel worn young man walks into arena shortly after.
Wulfram scoffs loudly at this first question, but otherwise does not respond.

"The name is Wulfram."
"No"


Wulfram answers without making eye contact with Cailean.

"Please do not get in the way."

Wulfram takes a few steps away from Cailean and stands at attention with shield ready.

Well as we say in the cloister ‘One for you and one for me, have a drink and friends we’ll be. But if you should disagree then feck off and more for me.’" with that Cailean downs the first offered drink.

ok. Let's go. To make this more fun I thought we might just go round by round CR by CR. So I'll start you off with a CR 1 fight. Next round will be CR 2 and so on. We'll keep going until I TPK you. Sound fun? I hope so.
You watch as the gates to the colosseum are raised. You gear the roar of the crowd fill the combat pit. The stench of freshly spilt blood is palpable.

On the opposite side of the arena you see four goblins enter the arena. Two have spears and the other two have shortbows. They are seventy feet away from you.

Cailean looks at his grumpy companion with a huge grin on his face... "I see we've started have we, well since there's only 4, I'll try to save at least 1 for ya... " Cailean runs 30 feet towards the goblins pulling out two daggers and throwing them at the 2 armed with bows.

You are absolutely right! Although I had to double check whether a monk could use his martial arts die when making a ranged attack as I thought they only got it when making a melee attack. However, it seems that I was wrong and they can, so we will continue in this fashion. My appologies.

Wulfram grins as the doors begin to open and the first challenge appears. He readies his shield and grips his longsword. Wulfram lightly jogs 30 feet towards the enemies to stand next to Cailean.

"Lets see what you've got" Wulfram grins as he watches the daggers fly.

Wulfram stabs his longsword into the graound and outstretches his hand to the goblin on the left.

"Let the battle begin" He shouts as a beam of energy arcs out of his hand towards the goblin.

Wulfram advances at a leisurely pace. He plants his great sword into the ground and points at a goblin. A stream of eldritch energy streams out of his finger and flies towards the goblin. His aim is true and it strikes the goblin in the center of it's chest. It falls down to the ground. Dead.

Then Cailean rushes forwards and hurls two daggers. On flies wide but the other strikes with deadly accuracy. It hits one of the goblins in the eye and it falls dead. Instantly.

Then two remaining goblins rush into.the fray.

The goblin attacking Wulfram lands a crippling blow on Wulfram's left leg. His leg is now bleeding profusely.

Wulfram is not happy about missing with the first attack and subsequently getting hit by such a low base creature.

He clenches his long sword and slashes upward with fierce determination at the goblin that landed the first blow.

No problem, I've never played a monk before so if I'm wrong please call me out on it, I'm trying to figure out the rules myself
As Cailean ducks out of the way of the spear he pops up into the face of the goblin with a grin. "You're gonna wish ya hadn't a done that." Cailean punches the goblin in this chest, then leans back and rams his head forward headbutting the goblin square in the face. Seeing the second goblin with the bow aiming at his companion, Cailean runs 10 feet, jumping the rest of the way slamming his foot into the side of the archer goblin.

Wulfram misses the goblin but it doesn't matter because Cailean becomes a virtual whirlwind of destruction. His first blow is an open fisted punch which shoves the bridge of the goblin's nose directly into his brain, before the goblin's body even hits the ground he moves over to the goblin attacking Wulfram, grabs its shoulders, spins it around and plants his forehead smack in the center of it's chest. The poor goblin's ribcage snaps and shards of bone are driven into its heart. Finally, he charges at the goblin archer and lauches a flying high kick which connects with the goblin's head and snaps its neck.

All enemies are dead. Well done. You may take a short rest if you like. Then we'll move on to round 2.

Cailean smiled as the last goblin fell to the ground. "Well now, that was a good bit of fun... I do believe that's 4 for me." Cailean goes and picks up the daggers he threw, the two spears, one of the bows, and the arrows from the goblins and puts them into his bag. After that, he reaches into his satchel and pulls out his small barrel of whiskey and pours two shots. "Perhaps ale isn't yer drink, fancy a shot of the good stuff? It's my own recipe..." Cailean holds out a shot to his companion.

Wulfram is disappointed in his second miss however he does notice the domination displayed by this other combatant.

"Hahaha well done!" Wulfram lets out a deep rumbling laugh and with a grin he throws his shield down and sheathes his long sword.

Wulfram takes a wide stance, one calming breath and claps his hands together. Dark energy swirls around and when Wulframs hands part a massive Greatsword materializes.

Seeing the offer from Cailean Wulfram slams the sword into the sand and accepts the offer. He takes the cup, clinks with Cailean and slowly sips the liquid.

Raising the cup to his new friend "May we we get what we want, May we get what we need, but may we never get what we deserve." With that, he drinks the shot, puts everything back into his satchel and starts to stretch out his limbs. "Time for round 2"

You barely finish speaking when the portcullis to.the arena propper rises again and you are directed back into the arena.
At the opposite end of the arena are five goblins. Four look like the monsters you have just slain but one looks different. It is wearing armour and it weilds two wicked looking scimitars.

The goblins are only 10 feet away from you. They form up in some kind of weird looking phalanx. The bigger goblin is clearly having an effect on the morale and discipline of the other goblins.

"Well now, this looks fun. You take the big guy, I’ll take the others." Cailean moves to the group wading through them throwing haymakers, moving from one to another and ending his flurry of blows by disengaging and moving 35 feet away.

Wulfram gathers dark energy in his fist and outstretches his arm towards the bigger goblin. Once Wulfram opens his fist dark tendrils sweep out and bombard the goblin.

Wulfram grips his greatsword and moves within range of the larger goblin making a vicious over the head slam aiming to crush the goblins helmet

In a whilrwind of death Cailean leaps around and dispatches three of the goblin soldiers. The goblin boss squeals in fear and rage and attempts to take you down. Wulfram launches a blow at the large goblin but try as he might, he cannot connect with the creature.

The goblin, quickly disregards Wulfram and focuses on the bigger threat of Cailean, he orders the sole remaining goblin to do so too.

Wulfram grimaces in his poor display of swordsmanship, but will not give up. He follows up with a mighty horizontal arc swing aiming to cleave the goblin in half.

"You are mine!" He shouts as the blade swings.

Cailean easily sidesteps the two goblins attacks. "Oh, is that all ya got ya green skinned vermin." Cailean launches a swift jab at the smaller goblin then quickly throws a left hook at the chief before kicking the bigger one in the family jewels. A kick that would surely stun all but the heartiest of foes.

The goblin boss drops his sword, grabs the remaining goblin and throws him in the way of Cailean's stunning strike. The goblin takes the hit and crumples to the ground. Wulfram's strike, once again, fails to find it's mark.

The lone boss strikes out at Cailean.

Cailean stands in front of the lone goblin, starting to sway in what looks like a drunken stupor. Each time the blade comes near, he deftly sways out of reach. "Oh, looks like you're all alone... ya know what ma friend, I'm feeling a bit parched and I think I'm going ta end it now if ya dont' mind." Cailean launches into a series of short jabs, a flurry of blows.

Wulfram has blood in his eyes. He levels his great sword and with a mighty thrust attempts to destroy the goblin boss.

"THIS ENDS NOW!" He screams as the blade moves towards the goblin boss. Wulframs blade sinks home through the goblins chest and the goblins body explodes in viscera covering Cailean and Wulfram.

FINALLY!! 13 damage total.....you've gotta be kidding me Cailean with all those hits....your on fire. Legit pummeled this guy into the ground

Cailean delivers two massive blows and the goblin falls to the ground. Wulfram coldly walks over and strikes the creature's head from its shoulders.

"Your prowess in battle is quite impressive....I may have misjudged you." Wulfram's great sword dissipates as he speaks. He walks over to pick up his thrown shield and straps it in place on his back.

"We are still standing, they will keep coming." Wulfram claps Cailean gently on the shoulder as he walks away.

You recover from your brief battle with the goblins and take a short rest in the ready room. After a drink or three you hear an announcer announce that it's time to begin round 3.

You head out into the arena to find that the battlefield has changed.

You are in a cemetary. It is the witching hour and strange clouds cover the bright full moon. In the distance you hear a high pitched shreik as some kind of foe knocks open a tomb door to a mausoleum. Out steps an ancient skeleton decked in what must have been ancient relics of untold glory. It wears ancient golden armour and ceremonial weapons. It's red eyes lock onto you and if it had any emotion left, you would say that it looks hungry...

Wulframs eyes are ablaze with the ancient invocation of devils sight as he scans the cemetery for the source of the noise.

After a calming breath Wulfram claps his hands together and again dark energy weaves around his hands. As he pulls them away a great blade appears.

"I hope you are not afraid of ghosts." Wulfram has a grim look of determination on his face as he proceeds forward slowly.

As Cailean walks into the new space he claps and rubs his hands in appreciation of the setup... "Ooohh, this looks like a little bit a fun." Cailean reaches into his bag and pulls out his broom of flying. "What do ya think, change up tactics a bit... have a little fun with it." Cailean hops onto his broom and as he's moving 20ft off the ground he pulls out a stoppered flask.

I'm not sure the rules of combat on a broom, and the flask is a decanter of endless water. So maybe some messy fun...

There is a magical ceiling about 100 feet above the ground. The decanter will take a long time if you're planning on flooding the arena.

As you are "creeping" give me a stealth check. If you beat a 13 you can have advantage on your next attack.

The ancient skeleton takes a very well made, yet equally ancient longbow off of it's back, nocks and arrow and takes aim for Cailean.

Cailean easily flys around the arrows. "you call that a shot... ya couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with that thing... I bet when you were alive you were a bit of a wanker weren’t ya... always running yer mouth but never backing it up." Cailean reaches into his bag and pulls out a dagger with one hand and with the other he continues to spray the undead with the water, trying to draw his attention away from Wulfram to aid his sneakiness.

Wulfram attempts to move into a flanking position to catch the monster unaware.

I guess I wasn’t sure we had spotted the monster yet. Wulfram was just looking for anything that might give him advantage.
Wulfram slips and makes a great clang as she stumbles a bit and loses any chance of surprise. He grips his sword in his offhand and summons some dark magic in the other.

"Back to the grave with you!" He shouts as he releases tendrils of dark energy.

Unfortunately Hex doesn't effect saving throws it only effects ability checks QQ. It would be super OP if it did. Bonus action: hex: dex, action: cast fireball! Would you like to change your action and attack it or cast another spell?

Ahhh, ok I was a little confused - how can you use a disadvantage on ability checks to your favor? Is grappaling/shoving an ability check or saving throw?

Yes! Grappling is an ability check! At higher levels you can choose wisdom and cast invisibilty on yourself. Those are both pretty powerful combos.

I'm unsure of what the order is, let me know when I'm free to act please. I'm thinking since I don't roll for an attack to hit with the decanter, I stand the chance of hitting Wulfram if he's engaged in combat and I don't want to do that.

Let's say that now that he's in melee range you'd probably stop using the decanter for fear of hitting wulfram. It doesn't take an action to use it but you need to aim it so you can't attack and use the decanter at the same time. You could probably use the decanter and cast a spell if you had any though.

Cailean continues to poor water on the wight but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Wulfram rushes in and launches a massive overhead strike which connects with the creature's collar bone.

HP 45-22 (ouch!) = 23 left.

The creature launches two attacks at Wulfram. As the first attack hits Wulfram feels part of his soul being sucked out and into the undead creature.

Constitution saving throw please DC 13

Wulfram flinches as the creature manages to breach his armor and prick his flesh. Wulfram reacts to the attack and he swings his arm around towards the creature and the skeleton is set ablaze by hellish flames.

The first arrow misses. The second arrow finds its mark and a stream of black liquid sprays out of the wound and lands on the ground. As soon as it makes contact with the ground it begins to boil and hiss.

It shambles its way towards Cailean and a pseudopod lashes out at him.

You spring back 40 feet take two shots. One of them flies true, the other not so much. Wulfram's spell flies wide and the creature shambles after Cailean. It rushes right up to him but it doesn't attack. Cailean you are about 50 feet away from the arena wall. You have a little room to maneuver but you probably can't do this forever.

The portcullis is raised once more but this time the arena looks quite different. About 100 feet from your current position you see a large mound of dirt, maybe 10 feet high, with sharpened stakes driven into it and facing towards you. Around the mound is a semi complete wooden palisade. There is a five foot gap in the middle of the palisade. Through the gap you see two orcs with massive, lethal looking pike like spears. You see several more orcs lining the palisade weilding long bows. You catch a glimpse of what appears to be an old looking orc leaning heavily on a gnarled wooden staff.

You are facing 5 orcs and an Eye of Grimmish. This is a normal level 5 encounter but I think it should count as difficult as the orcs have a pretty nice defensive location. You can approach the entryway however you like but only one person can come through the opening at a time. Moving up the mound will take up half of your speed. The fence is about 8 feet high and will require an athletics check to scale it. Any questions before we begin?

Cailean's first and third strike connect with the old orc but it manages to dodge away from the other two attacks. The old orc moves away from the monk

None of the orcs are currently defending the wall near your position. The fence is about 5 feet high. There is no opening in the wall from this side.

@Wulfram, as the orcs defending the opening have moved in to engage Cailean it should be very east to just enter the enclosure. To move up the hill in any other direction will cost half of your movement for 10 feet, and climbing over the palisade will take all of it.

Gunther runs up to the palisade and looks over. He now has an unobstructed line of sight to the chieftan and the six orcs. Two of Cailean's attacks hit and one of the orcs falls unconscious. Wulfram's attack strikes a vicious blow on one of the archers.

Getting over their shock, the archers and spearman all take aim at Cailean. The chieftan pulls out his wand and another load of missiles strike out at him. The massive crude spear also comes in for an attack.

Just a few questions to clarify, I did move myself so that the big orc with the wand was between me and the archers/spearman. since I moved to the back of the orc using my last disengage, can the spiritual weapon still reach me?

Spiritual weapon can move 20 feet per round. It was cast in front of you and the orc warchief only moved 15 feet away. If you moved to within melee range of the warchief then there is no way you could have moved more than 15 feet away from the weapon.

Caileans looking really beat, with a final surge of adrenaline he does another flurry of blows and at the end disengages and runs 50ft away from them and drops prone onto the ground, as far away from the archers as he can, preferably with a wall between himself and the orcs. As he runs he whistles for his broom. As he runs he yells to the others, "Ok, I will admit that I may have been a bit hasty, lesson learned...I’ll let you two take over, I need a quick breather"

Wulfram uses his movement speed to breach the threshold to the platform and darkness descends on the closest enemies. Now that he is finally within melee range he will take a brutal overhead swing at the nearest goblin.

I am hoping to use darkness to obscure the archers. Wulfram has devils sight evocation so he can see but the archers cannot so disadvantage on attacks against him while under cover.

The combined assault of Cailean and Gunther drop the warchief. He falls to the ground, his wand next to him.

The orcs let out a howl in fury and attempt to end you. The three remaining archers take shots at the darkenss and the two spearmen charge Gunther.

@Gunther: yes, you can use uncanny dodge to halve the damage from one of the attacks. So that will make it 10 points of damage instead.

@Wulfram. You move up to the two orc spearmen, your first attack killed one, so you may use your great weapon master feat to make another attack if you wish
