A Strange New Desert

Apr 27, 2018 11:11 am
It is mid-afternoon, and you and your companions are sitting in the common room of The Hunter’s Mark. You have just finished clearing a cavern of Manticores for Sir Stannon, Captain of the Town Guard at Lyn’s Ascendance, the capital city of Dia Monde. You arrive at the inn, wash, refresh yourselves and order food and beer. You are halfway through your meal when a messenger rushes into the room.

Excuse me sirs. I bear a message for _________.
OOC:
Who are you? What do you call yourselves?
Please write an introductory post to introduce what your character looks like, their skillset, and why the group loves to have them around. As a bonus, if you have a good idea for a group of adventurers, have at it!
Apr 28, 2018 2:16 am
Cailean leans back in his chair and hoists his a flagon of his own brewed stock of ale to his lips and takes a long drink of it. His well worn clothes somewhat clash with his Elvish boots, exceptional cloak, and well crafted bracers that peek out from under his work shirt. A dagger in both boots and a quarterstaff are his only visible weapons, but the smudge of manticore blood on the toe of his well made boots, and the specks that blend in with his own red hair are enough for the learned observer to know that he doesn't need a weapon to be deadly. With a quick glance at the bartender, he reaches into his finely crafted satchel and pulls out a small wooden barrel and several shot glasses. Pouring an amber looking liquid into each of the glasses he passes the shots to his companions. "Well now, since we finished the mission, gathered some coin, then a toast to a job well done... May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live." After drinking it down, he gathers up the barrel, the glasses, and stows them into his satchel. "So what's next?"
Apr 28, 2018 2:11 pm
Baerkohm watches quietly, as he does anytime the group is around other people. He eats hurriedly, if a bit barbarically. His bald head gleams in the light inside The Hunter's Mark, his golden beard festooned with small bone totems and bits of cured sticks as decoration. His eyes, one deep brown the other the color of deep water ice in winter, observe everything, always finding ways out of his current position. A variety of small creature furs dangle from his belt. His stocky body is covered by a heavy robe featuring a dizzying array of patches with interesting little pictures. A heavy pack sits on the ground as he drinks his ale out of his own tankard. Though you've watched him put away the better part of almost 2 gallons of ale, he doesn't seem any worse for wear. The one item that never seems to leave his side is the gnarled and twisted staff that you've always known him to have. Though he bears a slight odor of the outdoors at all times, in the times you've traveled together, he's always had a keen sense of where you were and where you needed to be going. His ability to find food on the trail is unmatched and his restorative magics have always been very helpful.

When the messenger bursts in, he turns his attentions to the lad and quirks an eyebrow. I think we may find out Cailean, if you can pull yourself out of yer cups for a moment.

For his name being Quiet he is know to be very loud in social situations. GREAT STUFF CAILEAN! You never disappoint. Quiet's fur is a silky black with deep black eyes. His appearance is always clean, Quiet makes sure of that with his constant grooming even if it isn't the best time to do it. His leather armor matches his fur. Hidden beneath his armor lay a few daggers that are almost impossible to see. However he does carry a short bow on his back and a rapier hanging from his hip. Quiet is most at home out in the wild. Quiet tends to take off earlier or faster than everyone else in order to get information before returning back to let his companions know what he saw. His black fur and quiet paws are a great help when stalking prey. Quiet likes to keep his distance when fighting however his sharp claws come in handy when in hand to hand combat. He is also a bit knowledgeable in the ways of magic. His has know connections to some of the more shady parts of town thanks to his previous employment. He doesn't really talk about it much though unless asked, in which case he lets out almost every detail very loudly which often gets him in trouble.

Wulfram sits at the head of the table, which is customary at this point. His companions know Wulfram needs to feel like his is the most important member of the party. His full plate mail reflects the flickering of the fire and you can tell he has just recently polished and repaired any dents from the previous adventure. He must take great care in his armor to keep it smooth and shinny because you remember several times he took some serious hits from a monster.
Wulfram sits in the table straight and looks over his party with a slight bit of annoyance and a touch of disdain. He is not used to traveling with such a rag tag group, but he has eventually come to appreciate each as a traveling companion.
Wulfram appears to be deep in thought and if you were to watch him close enough you could almost see a design flicker on the table surface, but in another moment it is gone.
[ +- ] Prestidigitation
Wulfram silently takes the cup offered by Cailean - this is not a normal thing to happen as Wulfram is usually always giving Cailean a hard time about his liquors - generally calling his wears 'goat piss not fit for peasants'.
He makes a non - approving sound when the big cat speaks up.

"Quite - why do you always shout...." Wulfram grumbles more to himself than anyone else.

As the messenger arrives Wulfram slams his fist onto the table generating a very load and unnatural sound. He stands up to face the messenger.
[ +- ] Prestidigitation
"You have come to speak to me, out with it then...." Wulfram awaits a response.
Apr 29, 2018 3:51 pm
Cailean roles his eyes at Wulframs outburst and puts his feet up on the table and his hands behind his head, "Don't worry about the big shiny one there, his bark is much worse than his bite. What can we help ya with?"
Apr 30, 2018 1:45 am
Araaz Syl'a Var'ran is a half-elf monk/cleric. Bald except for a braided ponytail on the back of his head, he is a finely toned and muscular man dressed in monks robes. With his black smithing skills and adequate martial skills he is an acceptable member of this party. Sometimes he feels like Wulfram only tolerates him in order to keep his armor looking good, but for the most part he is likable. He is slow to trust others but when he does, he is one of the most loyal friends a body can have. He looks at Cailean in amusement as he drinks from his mug of ale. "Can you not see he's not in the mood Cail?"
Apr 30, 2018 2:06 am
Nilros sits off by himself drinking he scowls at Wulfram and thinks why are we not preparing for the next battle? We should be striking evil in the heart right now, instead of sitting around. Evil never rests why should we?

Nilros raises his glass to his compatriots and forces a slight grimace, which anyone could easily seen through
Apr 30, 2018 2:30 am
Cailean looks at his companion, "Raz, I understand that, but just cause he’s ina bad mood doesn’t mean that he needs to take it out on the messenger.. And Baerkohm," Cailean lets out a loud belch, "just cause I always drink, doesn’t mean I’m always drunk, it just means I’ve got a head start." Cailean turns back to the messenger. "So my good man, what can this intrepid group of rabble rousers do for ya, and more importantly who sent ya?"
Apr 30, 2018 3:02 am
The messenger stumbles, clearly not used to addressing common born individuals such as yourselves. The crude nature of your exchange clearly has him on edge. I was told to find the group of adventurers known as Arina's Vengeance. Is that you?
OOC:
You remember that Arina was a much loved earlier companion who tragically fell in battle with a cult of demon worshipers.
Apr 30, 2018 3:30 am
Nilros quickly jumps up at the messengers request,
ay that is us? And if the likes of you are looking for us then shits really messed up then
Apr 30, 2018 7:51 am

"How dare you speak that name in that tone. You address us with more respect than that!" Wulfram gets up from the table and begins to make his way over to the man. You can tell he has a bit of a crazed look in his eye.
Apr 30, 2018 11:56 pm
The messenger looks terrified. I'm so sorry my lords. Please forgive me. I come on behalf of Lord Byorn, Duke of The Eastern Marches. He summons you to attend him at your earliest conveience. You can find him at his estate in the Upper Quarter or I can take you there directly, if you like?
May 1, 2018 1:21 am
"Oh there he goes again," Cailean stands up and walks up beside Wulfram with a tankard in his hand. "So what kind of a man is this Duke of yours? What kind of a job is he offerin? Better yet, how big is his wine cellar?" He downs the tankard and looks at the messenger.

May 1, 2018 3:55 am
Well we best be going, and if you are all not willing to part with your drinks right at this time then you best be bringing them.
Nilros gets up and dons his black Armor.
May 1, 2018 5:05 am
"Might as well go now. Although Cail probably shouldn't do the talking... He may not be drunk, but he isn't completely sober either!" Araaz chuckles before draining the remainder of his ale and standing. He moves with a lithe grace, almost as smoothly as Quiet's feline form.

The messenger points to his tabbard. This is the symbol of his house. you see a golden lion rampant on a red field. The Duke is a marvellous man. He's intelligent, well bred and his fashion style is impeccable. He owns great swathes of lands and he is rich beyond imagining and yet he always has time for commoners.
OOC:
@Cailean you hear what appears to be absolute hero worship or maybe even infatuation. He's definitely sincere either way.
May 1, 2018 11:20 am
"Well now, you had me at rich... let’s go." Cailean picks up his bag and gets ready to go. "Don’t worry Raz, I’m not that drunk to know where the money comes from, I’ll hold ma tongue. Of course if I hold ma tongue to long it gets all dried out and I need something to wet ma whistle."
May 2, 2018 1:59 am
Aye, I've not poured any of me jug's beer yet today Cailean. If you find yourself parched, I've a fair bit to spare you. Baerkohm says with a chuckle as he stands, picking up his load and setting up to follow their messenger.
May 2, 2018 2:00 pm
I speak, for the first time, running my hand through my black mohawk and ponytail. I never trust a rich man who "cares" about commoners. They don't know our struggles to relate to us. But I suppose if he has gold to spare, I would be willing to take some off of his hands. I stand and the sleeves of my black robe fall back over my deep red arm skin. My black eyes close for a second. Let us away, fellow adventurers, for Arina.
May 3, 2018 1:03 am
The messenger leads you through the merchant quarter and past the various shops and guild halls and into the Upper Quater. The guards posted at the entrance give you group a measuring glance and seem as if they are about to challenge you but one of them notices the messenger's tabbard and places his arm in front of his companion and you are allowed to enter. You walk past several large town houses surrounded by high walls made from white marble. The quater is filled with trees and parks and the walk is quite lovely. After a short walk, you see a house flying a flag with the same colours as the messenger's tabbard. You are escorted through the gardens, into the house, up the stairs and into a waiting room.

Everything about this house screams wealth, from the luxurious drapes, tapestries, paintings and vases that line the walls through to the incredibly well made furniture and lavish display of silver and gold ornaments that meet your eyes wherever you choose to look.

After a short while the door opens and a man in his mid-thirties enters dressed entirely in scarlet and gold. His beard and moustaches are closely trimmed and waxed.
He opens his arms and greets you warmly.

Ah my friends. Welcome to my humble abode! Let me offer my congratulations on your last job. Fancy that! The slayers of the Chimera in my house! Lady Sivilia is going to be so jealous when she finds out! Anyway, your credentials do you credit! Sir Stannon speaks very highly of you! You are quite the talk of the town!
He seems to end almost every sentence with extra emphasis, as if he is either very excited or he seems to think that everything he has to say is very important.
May 3, 2018 11:50 am
Araaz thinks back to the days in his youth when he would spy on his fathers meetings. He thought he was quite good at it until his father caught him on one occasion. His father began to teach him the proper addresses and etiquette of the court. These lessons, however, were few and far between due to his mothers illness.
Drawing from his limited knowledge of such things, Araaz says to the Duke, "You flatter us, Your Grace, but of course. It's what we do after all!" Araaz nods his head to the man in a show of measured respect. Not a bow, for he is not acquainted with this man and owes him no allegiance or deference. Araaz believes that everyone deserves a measure of respect. That respect can grow or dwindle depending on ones actions, but all people deserve at least some. Actions do speak louder than words after all.
"Now, for what purpose did you request our presence this day?" He patiently waits for the Duke to explain the summons.

My what a colourful bunch you are! Reminds me of the good old days at seminary school! Why we got up to some mischief then aye! Anyway, to business!
Gentlemen, I am vexed! As you know my Dukedom is to the east. The land is very fertile but something odd has happened recently! This bloody desert has appeared in the middle of my lands! No one can tell me how it got there or how to get rid of it! Worse, it appears to be spreading! Faster than any natural desertification should. My profits from the harvest look slim. I tell you gentlemen, I am at a loss. My guardsmen and magic users in the area are stumped! I heard of your success with the Chimera den. No small feat that! So I want to hire the best in the business to deal with my desert problem! In return for your services, how does 5,000 gold sound?

Cailean moves over to a window, pointing it out of the window and says the magic word. "Geyser," as a 30 foot blast of water sprays out of the window. @Wulfram: you see a number of pieces that appear to depict famous scenes if battle as the knights battle against various enemies, undead and dragons but whether they come from the north or not is anyone's guess.

He looks at Rykl and waves off your offence.
Oh I'm sure your deserts are fine for your kind of people but this is Dia Monde!

Then he turns to Salvadore.
5,000 gold is a lot of money! More than you're likely to see in the next ten years of Chimera hunting! 5 more jobs like this and you could buy a small house in the Upper Quarter! 10 more jobs like this and you could buy a peerage! I don't actually know a lot of the details but if you head to the village of Snowsden. The local guardmen and my personal retainers should be able to present you with the relevant information! Just clear this up for me! I will be in your debt!

. A servant enters with a round of wines and then waits patiently for you to drink them. Then he takes a sip of his wine, winces and leaves the room.
May 5, 2018 11:30 am
"Well friends, what do you think?" Araaz asks the party while putting away his notes. "5000 Gp is a decent price I suppose. And we have a starting point now. Should we go to this Snowsden village to get more information?" He turns just in time to see Ryki's prank, but he doesn't recognize the action for what it was. Seeing that Wulfram and Quiet have wandered off a little to peruse the art hanging on the walls, and Cailean and Ryki seem to be arguing about something a little, he asks again, "Um, hello, my friends? Was no one else paying attention to our host regarding our task? Or were the walls and drink more interesting?"
OOC:
Is there a messenger or a butler or someone still in the room, or somewhere nearby, p that we can talk to for directions to Snowsden village? Or do we already know where that is?
May 5, 2018 11:34 am
OOC:
Oh yes! The servant who brought you the drinks seems to be waiting for you to finish your drinks and leave. You know where the Dukedom is although whether you have been there before is up to you! However, once you get close enough you think that it would be pretty hard to miss either the new desert or the village as they must be the talk of the Dukedom!
May 5, 2018 11:57 am
Ryki leans in and whispers to Salvadore "The wine's poisoned. You see him wince? He left to take the antidote. I don't think he liked your haggling very much."

He turns to Araaz "What was there to pay attention to? There is a fast growing desert that we are getting paid to take care of. Pretty straightforward, don't exactly need to give your undivided attention to catch that." He turns and smiles at Cailean "All this desert talk making you thirsty?"
May 5, 2018 12:25 pm
Cailean raises his glass"To the desert then..." Cailean lifts his glass and downs it. Immediately spitting it out and looking at the empty glass. "This land must be cursed, everything’s being taken over by dirt and sand."
May 5, 2018 3:59 pm
"I agree...simple mission, not much more to do here" Wulfram speaks up as he makes his way back over to the group. As Wulfram preparation to leave the estate he puts his hand on the shoulder of the proprietor and squeezes a little harder than necessary and whispers something into his ear.

"Oh, come now, you chickens." Ryki says throwing an arm around Araaz's shoulder "Too afraid of the tried and true?" He picks up a potion and takes a small sip. As he swallows, he clutches his throat "Poi...son" He squeaks out before resting his head on Araaz's shoulder and closing his eyes.

You head back to The Hunter's Mark, and prepare to travel east. You consult a series of maps and think that it will take you about two days to get to Snowsden.

Are there any special preperations you would like to make before leaving Lyn's Ascendence?

May 10, 2018 2:21 am
Nay. I think I am ready to travel. No sense over preparing now, perhaps at sunrise I'll make better use of nature's blessings. Baerkohm mumbles.
May 10, 2018 3:02 am
OOC:
I assume everyone takes a great potion on healing and we all prepare for a dungeon crawl. Wulfram would make sure his armorn is freshly polished first and foremost. How many healing potions can we hold at a time? Wulfram would make sure we have a good amount of rope and someone have a crowbar before we left. Also even a short ride Wulfram would expect to take a horse so he would use his nobility to get a horse one way or another. I also assume we travel with enough rations for like 10 days.
May 10, 2018 3:11 am
OOC:
Araaz should be good to go. And horses for everyone is nice. If we all have horses tho, we should get some animal feed for them. No sense having a horse and then starving them to death in a desert... Thx Arina! (If possible I’d like to try to get some antidote potions or something as well.)
Btw Wulfram, there are 6 in the party and 5 vials. Araaz will pass on taking one of the potions we were given, and everyone else can take one.

Regarding healing potions. You could probably fit about 10 into your backpack but only keep 2-3 within easy reach, as in be able to use in combat in a single turn.

I think at level 5 it's safe to assume that you all have horses.
May 11, 2018 1:24 am
OOC:
Well Cailean travels by broom, so if we all have horses, mine can be a pack horse for carrying extra supplies. I have 20 days worth of rations and I also have the decanter of endless water so we won't need to go crazy on carrying water. Plus if we can't figure out the problem with the desert I can just spend the next few months hovering over it shouting out geyser and get 30 gallons of water spraying out every turn. So we can maybe put a pin in it and keep that as plan B.
May 12, 2018 10:58 am
You make your way to the stables, saddle your horses and set off for Snowsden. The roads surrounding Lyn's Ascendance are very busy and safe. The congestion is a little bad and you get stuck behind a caravan for an hour or so. But after a couple of hours of travel the road thins out and you set your own pace.

The day passes uneventfully for the most part, and as sunset approaches you come to a small, insignificant little farming village. It has an inn, a market, a blacksmithy and not much else.

You approach the inn and see the wooden sign shapped like a woman's silhouette. On the sign there is a yellow lyre and the words The Bard's Inspiration.

You head into the inn and find it surprisingly full. Still you talk to the barkeep and there are rooms available. 1 gold for a private room and 4 silver for a bunk in the common room.

You pay your fare, which includes a meal and sit down in one of the booths. You can't help but overhear snippets of an exciting conversation coming from the next booth.

I'll tell you we're going to be rich! Do you have any idea how much a nob'll pay for a winter wolf cloak? Gavin swears the tracks are no more than a day old. The pack are heading for the mountains to the south-east!

Quiet you fool
another, stern voice interjects.
You never know who's listening.

You look at your companions and continue with your meal.

What do you do?
May 12, 2018 2:20 pm
"Wolves in the area, hmm?" Araaz comments to the others and taking a pull from his drink. "Might be something to think about, or at the very least be aware of."
OOC:
Is there a quest/notice board in the inn or did we see one outside? If so Araaz would like to look at it at some point.
Also, just out of curiosity, how are we looking at individual wealth? Whatever our background stated or would we have more by now? I would like to take a peek into the market in the morning before we continue if Araaz has enough to be worth looking. You never know what you might find!

Cailean leans over to Araaz "Do ya even know what a winter wolf is? Sounds cold... I thought we were headed to the desert, ya know hot and sand, not cold and mountains..."
May 13, 2018 3:08 am
"We are going to a place called Snowsden, that sounds pretty cold and mountainy; the desert is an anomaly." Responds to Cailean "As for what to do about it, we should focus on what we are meant to. If we run into the wolf, we can take care of it for a little bonus but it shouldn't be our main priority and we shouldn't waste our time searching for it."
May 13, 2018 3:18 am
Wulfram has been silent and very calm until the mention of the winter wolf. As the words reach his ears he shifts uncomfortable in his seat and removes a bit of parchment concealed in a pocket close to his left forearm. He unravels the parchments and scans it quickly before placing in back under his gauntlet armor.
"We need to acquire this wolf" he says in a whisper almost to himself but just loud enough you would hear if you were listening. He makes a gesture for Ryki to let him out of the booth.
May 13, 2018 3:32 am
"Of course. of course." Araaz says, lifting his glass for another drink. "I wasn't saying we should go after the wolves, only that we should at least be aware of their presence. The desert is our main concern."
May 13, 2018 3:55 am
Ryki wasn't listening. He smiles at Wulfram before winking at him "You're going to have to crawl over me. Think you can manage with all that armor?"

If it's the 5000 we were given for equipment then I have very little left. I need to go back and figure out how much I spent so I can mark it on my char sheet. Also, I can skip hunting for more work and checking the market since this isn't our destination anyways. I'm done for the evening.

Ah, we'll let ye know once we hunt it. It shouldn't take us too long. The beasts sometimes roam down from Snowtop, the solitary mountain to the East. They're rare though.
May 17, 2018 10:51 am
The conversation ends there and you all retire for the evening. You sleep well. The rooms are not well furnished but they are clean and free from bed bugs and rsts which plague the city's inns.

You wake up and head down for breakfast, remembering the conversation you over heard last night.

Do you wish to continue towards Snowden or hunt some winter wolves?
May 17, 2018 11:40 am
OOC:
Personally I don't care either way.
Araaz wakes the early next morning without a headache, having only had a single ale the night before. He rises and stretches restfully before looking around to see who is awake. He attempts to quietly leave the room without waking anyone as he heads outside to an open and clear field or space and begins his morning exercises. After a short while he returns, bathes, and goes dpwnstairs for breakfast.

I awaken in the morning feeling great, as Salvador dose not partake in alcohol. Well gentlemen, what are the plans for today?
May 18, 2018 1:04 am
As the others wake up and come downstairs, Cailean is already sitting in the tavern, a pint in front of him and a pile of sausages and eggs half eaten on his plate. "Well now its about time you lot woke up, tuck in and get a good bite. Not sure if this sausage once said moo, oink, or neigh, but whatever kinda meat it is, its not that bad... "
May 18, 2018 2:10 am
"Right you are Cail! These eggs are fantastic too!" Araaz says as he digs into his meal. "So what is today's plan? Onward to Snowsden?"
May 18, 2018 2:07 pm
I sit with the others, but do not partake in any meat dishes, preferring a variety of fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms, if available.
May 19, 2018 5:01 am
Everyone wakes at dawn as Aaraz attempts to sneak out of the common room are foiled as he accident kicks several of you. A few curses later and you're all up and about.
OOC:
As no one seems to interested in hunting the wolves I'm going to move us all to Snowden.
You saddle your mounts and head off. The weather is unseasonably hot. This late in the year the rains usually come but the sky is a beautiful sky blue and there's not a cloud in the sky. You travel for several more hours before the vegetation starts to look a little unhealthy. The edges of the leaves look a little dry and by the time it gets to late afternoon you spot your first skeleton trees. This must be the edge of the desert you summize as the road has been following pasure for the past few hours and while the fencing still remains, the grass has mostly died away to be replaced by hot dry earth. As it is getting late in the afternoon you could either push on towards Snowden and probably make it shortly after dark or you could make camp for the evening.

What do you do?
May 19, 2018 1:48 pm
"Let us push on into the night, I do not like to look of the area. I shall guide us through the night" Wulfram urges his companions to not linger in this forsaken area.

"I will leave that decision up to those who can't see in the dark, eh Cail?" Araaz says, riding close to Caileen and elbowing him good-naturedly.
OOC:
Caileen is human right?
May 19, 2018 6:47 pm
Moving on is a wise choice. We have torches and can help with the issue of not seeing. Better for many to be in a bed, not under the desert trees. Baerkohm says firmly, pulling a torch from his pack, but not yet lighting it.
May 19, 2018 8:49 pm
Cailean does a barrel roll on his broom over the others and taps his forehead. "Ifin ya made yer own booze instead of buying it from others, yed have the coin fer some nice things. So if ya want I can tell ya where ta put those bloody torches. "

As you make your way towards Snowden, Wulfram draws your attention to what appears to be some kind of campfire in the distance. It is quite a way off the main road. The people around it would probably pose little threat to you if you just passed through.

What do you do?
May 22, 2018 11:38 am
Araaz quietly says to Caileen, "Hey Cail, with those goggles and broom of yours, can you get a little closer and take a look? Don't get too close or draw their attention though. We want to keep you around." He also turns to Salvadore and says, "Hey Salvadore, can you cover up your mace or dim the lit or something?"
May 22, 2018 1:24 pm
Quiet remains silent quietly taking cat naps here and there as the group travels.
May 22, 2018 1:48 pm
I banish the light on my mace.
May 22, 2018 2:49 pm
"Big cat....big cat the quiet go and check out camp for anything useful." Wulfram attempts to get Quiet to go and take a closer look at the encampment.
"We will wait here. Make loud nose if trouble." Wulfram gently nudged the large cat.

Cailean points to the distance, "Well you can go if ya want, but I’ll check it out from above." Cailean takes out his decanter of endless water and flies the broom up 30-40ft up near the tops of the trees, about 30 feet from the campfire, going as quietly as he can.

May 24, 2018 1:30 am
OOC:
Just an alternative suggestion but you could probably make the horses fly.
May 24, 2018 1:34 am
@Bigdog, you know that elementals come from the elemental planes. Fire elementals cannot exist outside of the fire elemental plane except for in certain, rare locations where travel between the planes is possible. Also, some magic users can summon them for limited periods of time.

As for magical reagents. The ash left from a fire elemental corpse is a very valuable magical component and can be used as a base to brew potions of fire resistance.
May 24, 2018 4:56 am
Quiet lets out a loud yawn Sleeping next to a fire does sound nice.
May 24, 2018 8:28 pm
The ash from these elemental's is worth a pretty penny. More gold never hurts.
May 25, 2018 11:34 am
So a couple of options. You could attempt to sneak by in which case I'll call for a relatively easy stealth check or you could attempt to ambush the creature which will require a more difficult stealth check.

Either way please vote:
1. Sneak through to Snowden.
2. Ambush the fire elemental.

I'll take the path with the most votes in 24 hours.
May 25, 2018 12:23 pm
Aye, gold doesn't hurt. Neither does ridding the world of a being made of fire. Not good for the wood or grass, having such a thing here. Baerkohm says.

"Take flight and douse then with water until dead. I will follow once you have engaged enemy." Wulfram is speaking to those with the brooms and the decanters.

Baerkohm quietly flies forward, stopping about 25 feet overhead the fire creature. Sitting up on his broom, he pulls his totem out of his pocket, thankful for the leather string that holds the small collection of wolf teeth and hawk feathers to his belt. A quick invocation and a snap of his wrist, and a long thorny vine streaks out towards the fire elemental below.

Casting thorn whip. If it hits, I am going to yank the elemental (provided it's Large or smaller) 10 feet into the air and then let it drop. Not sure if this would cause any falling damage (1d6, maybe, since it would fall 10 full feet).

Wulfram closes his eyes and blue whisps gather around his armor eventually hardening into crystalline armor. He throws his shield over his back and claps his hands together. Dark tendrils materialize and form into a great sword.

"Let us begin." He say under his breath as he begins to move towards the elemetals.

What happened with Baerkohm's first whip/lift/drop attempt? Either way, he's repeating it.
Baerkohm repeats the incantation and slings a whip of thorns out once more.

Casting thorn whip. If it hits, I am going to yank the elemental (provided it's Large or smaller) 10 feet into the air and then let it drop. Not sure if this would cause any falling damage (1d6, maybe, since it would fall 10 full feet).

The constant downpower of water washes over tge fire elemental and it silently writhes and twists and tries to escape from the stream. All the rest of you attempt to keep your distance and attack the creature from range with the sole exception if Wulfram who advances on his foe blade extended and shield at the ready.

After you pummel the elemental with missile after missile, Baerkohm speaks an incantation and a massive rope like vine picks up the elemental and flings him into the air. The elemental falls to the ground and thin slithers up to attack Araaz. Rather than stopping and attacking, the elemental moves right on top of him setting parts of his clothes and hair on fire.
OOC:
Take 9 points of fire damage and you are now on fire. You may dose the flames as an action.
Then it makes two attacks and Araaz tries to dodge out of the way of its fiery fists. In the end he is hald successful.
OOC:
Take another 14 points of fire damage.
Then the combined assault of your task force destroys the creatures physical form and banishes it back to the elemental plane of fire.

Combat is now over. What do you do?

"Ahhhh no fair!" He shouts in frustration to his flying companions. He will turn begin to inspect the area and attempt to collect the ashes from the fire elemental.

Those of you who fly up to take a look around see a whole lot of specks of bright red light. They appear to be moving towards your current position from multiple points to the north and south but not from the west (where you came from) or the east (where Snowden is located).

What do you do?
Jun 5, 2018 10:09 pm
Cailean quickly moves back to the others "I know ya wanted the dust, but it seems we have a whole bunch moving closer from the north and south. We should get a move on and head out or go back, or else you are all going to have a rough time."
Jun 6, 2018 9:04 am
"Then let's get moving!" Araaz says swinging his horse in a circle to gather his bearings, before moving toward Snowden.
Jun 7, 2018 3:51 pm
Aye. Dust is worthless if we are dead. It would be prudent to leave now.
Jun 8, 2018 1:54 am
Wulfram stores the bottles away and starts moving as fast as he can back to his horse.
"Yes we are in agree. Let us move swiftly." he says as he mounts his horse and starts making way to Snowden.
Jun 8, 2018 11:58 am
You quickly gather your things and head east along the road to Snowden. You arrive well into the evening at perhaps 10 o'clock. You make your way to the town's single inn, The Butchered Mare, and order rooms and meals.
OOC:
3 silver each for a berth in the common room and 50 silver if you would like to rent a room.
The next morning you rise with the dawn and head to the office of the mayor. There you are greeted by a man decked in wizard's robes who introduces himself as Lord Byron's personal retainer Naardin Malukia.
Jun 8, 2018 5:56 pm
A slight middle aged man leaned against the wall, deep green robes fitting his form comfortably. As he noticed the group and forced himself fully upright, the many bottles and baubles dangling from a leather bandolier slung across his chest jingled lightly against one another. "Ah, gentlemen. Glad to see you." said Naardin with a friendly smile beneath the upturned hood of a dark blue cloak. He pressed his shiny gauntleted hands into a sort of prayer gesture and bowed his head slightly. "I am Naardin Malukai, chief mage of Lord Byron. I've been informed you're here to help decipher the method of the sudden desertification of the area."

The wizard stepped forward and stuck out his hand, a broom in the corner flying towards it and resting with a clatter into the outstretched limb. Wrapped along it's length we're an assortment of bags and containers strapped in with rope and leather to keep them safe and sound midflight. "I'm coming with you of course. My specialty is Transmutation, but my current theory is something a little more planar. I need more information and a crew to help me get it safely. I trust the ride over here wasn't too eventful?"
Jun 8, 2018 6:31 pm
Cailean reaches into his bag of holding and pulls out his own broom, placing it over his shoulder... "Well now, Minus the field full of fire elementals, it wasn't tha bad. But I'm expecting tha might be part of yer problem."
Jun 10, 2018 4:35 am
Naardin grabs a paper from a scrollcase on his broom, and a quill from a small vial of ink on his chest. He scribbles something idly on the paper as he responds. "Yes, that it is. It's odd they only seem to appear at night. I don't know elementals of any sort to follow any regimented nocturnal or diurnal period of activity. The elemental planes are less regimented than our own in terms of a day night cycle. Particularly the one that is a sea of fire."

He flips the cap closed and it clicks shut, signalling he's finished his note taking. "I suspect there's a portal they're coming through, and that it may be at the center of this new desert. Even that's mostly conjecture though. Hopefully travel will grant us some insight. Any questions? Are you all ready to shove off as it were?" the wizard asks, a single eybrow raised.

I don't think they are the cause of the deforestation. fire is part of the natural way of a forest that allows new vegetation to occur but if I recall correctly I saw no ashes or burnt remains of trees.
Jun 10, 2018 11:28 pm
OOC:
@Quiet: Oh you definitely did! The fire elemental was moving from bush to bush, tree to tree and burning them to ashes.
Jun 11, 2018 1:43 am
"Yes, I have question. How we fight against army of fire? You have way to contain these things?" Wulfram speaks up and moves to ge front of the group to stand beside Cailean.
"We banished one easily but an army....hope you have plan before we rush off to be ashes." He continues speaking in a very calm demeanor.

"Well flying and spraying um worked well fer us, perhaps we just need more brooms and water." Cailean takes a swig of his flask.
Jun 11, 2018 7:26 pm
Water works, but if they keep coming through the portal, no telling how much water we may need. Perhaps the primary goal would be to destroy the portal if it exists and then we can mess with the elementals themselves. Or if you know anyone who can control some water elementals, perhaps we can use them
Jun 11, 2018 7:34 pm
"Well that would be a sight to see." Cailean turns to their new companion. "Any idea how to lose a portal if we find one?"
Jun 11, 2018 7:44 pm
Naardin cracked a smile at the conversation before stepping back in himself. "Flying brooms and a decanter of endless water are certainly two of the tools I'd planned to use against these foes. Certainly we'll have to fight more than one, but the plan is to diagnose why they're appearing and cut it off before their numbers grow too unmanageable. They only come out to play at night for now. It stands to reason if we can close their access during the day we won't have to deal with nearly so many. We're a strike team, not a mobilizing force. I plan to cut the problem off at the source rather than dam a river."

At the last question he gave a resigned half shrug. "It all depends on how it's held open. Whether it's a permanent fixture or a temporary one, whether a new one opens every night or the same one opens periodically, whether or not it's even a portal at all. There are many different mechanisms, and until we get a closer look at what's going on I don't think we're going to get much more insight into which this one uses."

You ask around and hear that a little over a month ago a traveller appeared in Snowden. This traveller appeared to be a drow but he was very polite and asked if there were any druid circles in the surrounding area. The local villages told him that there is indeed a druid circle and it is located to the north and west, an area that must have surely been effected by the desertification.
A week or so after the traveller left, the desertification began.
Jun 19, 2018 2:04 pm
Are there any other nobles around Snowden that Wulfram could speak with?
Jun 19, 2018 2:44 pm
OOC:
There are no nobles. There is a mayor. You probably outrank him socially though.
Jun 20, 2018 5:44 am
Quiet takes the info he has learned and takes it to his companions to share with them.
Jun 20, 2018 3:45 pm
"So we should head out to the druid circles then, find out ifin their still alive, or know about this mess..."
Jun 20, 2018 4:34 pm
"I agree...let’s head out soon and get to the bottom of this." Wulfram stands next to Cailean ready to leave.
Jun 21, 2018 9:08 pm
I can certainly reach out to the circles, at least make the appearance. Baerkohm says, smiling a bit as he stands next to Cailean and Wulfram.
Jun 21, 2018 9:36 pm
"That would be fabulous!" Naardin yips excitedly. "Gods I'm glad we might have at least something of an in road. I'm always worried I'm going to offend groups like that." Naardin mounts his broom and motions to Frostbeard. "Please, lead the way! I'm certain you'll have better luck pinning their location down than I."
Jun 22, 2018 1:21 am
"Well look at that, a plan has come together. I believe that is cause for a drink." Cailean pours a drink and downs it. "Of course not having a plan would be cause for a drink, being thirsty, lonely, being alive, others not being alive, being drunk... any of those are cause for a drink." Cailean takes another drink and offers some to the others if they would like.
Jun 22, 2018 5:15 am
Araaz takes the offered drink and raises it to Cailean, "I'll drink to most of those things." He drinks it more slowly than Cailean, then exhales and whistles as he holds up the mug. "I always seem to forget how unique your liquor is Cail." He shakes his head and then chases it with a drink of water.
OOC:
Araaz is ready to go as well.
Jun 23, 2018 5:29 pm
Jus' be sure to land about sixty feet away. Some of what needs to be said isn't meant for those uninitiated. As soon as I have clearance, I will motion to you. he says as he mounts his own broom.
OOC:
Baer's idea is to fly over to them and approach on foot with his Staff of the Woodlands in his hand.
Jun 23, 2018 6:34 pm
"And for those of us who do not fly? What shall we do? Follow on foot?" Wulfram moves over to Baerkohm and puts a hand gently on his broom so he cannot take off before the rest of the group has orders.
Jun 24, 2018 10:36 am
"Well you can ride yer horses, and those with brooms make the grand entrance. A fine specimen such as yerself might scare em away. I look positively harmless, unlike yerself."
Jun 24, 2018 12:17 pm
After you make your preperations you head west into the desert. You head to the area where your infornant told you that a druid circle is rumoured to be located.

@Baerkohm: As you are travelling you notice a strange arrangement of stones. Placed together they spell out the rune for water in the druidic language. The rune seems to be pointing towards the north east.

What do you do?
Jun 24, 2018 5:06 pm
Quiet proud of his information gladly takes two drinks from Cailean Refreshing as always but now I would like to nap.
Quiet proceeds to take catnaps here and there while traveling via horse
Jun 24, 2018 10:07 pm
Druids are definitely nearby. As is water. We should head northeast. he says shortly, as he flies further onward, looking for any other signs of the druids before he lands. As soon as he spots anything that would indicate druids are truly close by, he'll drop to his feet and walk in.
Jun 26, 2018 11:37 pm
You travel northeast for about three hours before you spy a cave leading into a sand dune
Above the cave you see an odd collection of rocks that Baerkohm instanly recognises as the druidic rune for home or sanctuary.
Jun 27, 2018 12:59 pm
Baer lands and slips his broom onto his back. His staff quickly moves to his hands and he walks up to the edge of the cave. Soon a melodic voice rings out from the dwarf, far different from his normal gravelly tone.

Jun 27, 2018 1:33 pm
Naardin lands the requested 60 feet behind, pulling a piece of charcoal from his belt and quickly scribbling down the rune. "Fascinating..." he mutters as the dwarf speaks. He'd never heard the odd language spoken before, or maybe more appropriately sung.
Jun 27, 2018 2:35 pm
A few moments pass before you hear a soft female voice echoing out of the cave.

Jun 27, 2018 3:39 pm
Baerkohm gestures back to the group, beckoning them forward.

As he enters the cave, he switches to Common.

I speak for the benefits of my friend Galena. We are here to investigate the strange desertification of the nearby lands. My name is Baerkohm Frostbeard, roaming caretaker of the fields and hills. I leave my friends to introduce themselves as they arrive, that you may know their voices and faces for yourself. he says, in a customary introduction among the druids.
Jun 29, 2018 1:38 pm
A group of three figures approach you from within the cave. They introduce themselves as Galena, Eyrwyn and Vleria, the speakers of the Emeral Grove. They point deeper into the cave and gesture for you all to follow them.
Jun 30, 2018 3:15 am
Cailean follows behind Baerkohm. "Well hello there, ma names Cailean it's nice to... oh I guess their wanting us to follow them then." Cailean leans into to Baerkohm and elbows him, "Interesting friends ya have down here, nice and chatty." Turning back to the others, Cailean shoulders his broom and starts to walk down the cave. "Alright, come on you lot, let's get down there. It does look a bit nicer than what's left outside."
Jun 30, 2018 4:42 am
This cave reminds me of home. Almost makes me want to nap some more Quiet begins to yawn again
Jun 30, 2018 12:31 pm
Wulfram dismounts from his horse, does a quick check of his inventory to make sure he is ready for an encounter, and makes his way to stand next to Cailean.
"What’s all this now?" he whispers to Cailean.
"Walking into s cave with strangers?"
Jul 1, 2018 12:04 pm
"I know right, I can’t believe they’re letting us in. It’s such an exclusive cave. Luckily Baerkohm knew a guy to get us in." With that, Cailean smiles and turns into the cave and walks down.
Jul 1, 2018 12:42 pm
As your new hosts lead you deeper into the cave you notice a small stream starts to flow beside the rock on the left side of the path. After about ten minutes or so, the cave opens up into a massive cavern filled with tropical looking flaura and fauna. Your guides lead you deeper into the grove and you see other members of the Emerald Grove going about their daily business, picking delicious looking fruit and fishing from a massive subterranean lake.

Your guides take you to a large tree and there you find an array of delicious treats spread out before you.

Welcome friends. Be at ease and rest. We can talk as we eat.
Jul 1, 2018 9:19 pm
We thank you for your generosity Galena, as well as that of the Emerald Grove. As I mentioned earlier, we have been charged with investigating the strange desertification of the land. We have already encountered and dispatched a rogue fire elemental that was wreaking havoc. Baerkohm says as he settles down into a cross-legged seat, plucking a sweet looking fruit from the array of treats.

"This place is beautiful. My mother would have loved to see such a beautiful display." Araaz says as he gazes at the surrounding scenery. He approaches the tree and places his hand on its trunk feeling the grain of the bark. He then seats himself near Baerkohm and partakes of the offered fruit.

Cailean sits on the ground looking around with a open awe and wonder. He reaches and grabs some fruit taking a big bite letting the juices run down his front. "What an amazin place you've made fer yerself down here. I've never seen a cave with it's own fruit trees before."

Naardin continued scrawling rough images across sheets 9f parchment as they descended into the cave. As soon as one was full it was wrapped and replaced in a scroll case and a fresh one entered his scribbling hands. "I am Naardin Malukai. I can't thank you enough for extending us your hospitality. I'm sure this encroaching desert is just as big a concern for yourselves as it is hid lordship." at Cailean's words he jotted a not to himself to look into growing plants in the dark, then reached happily for a large red fruit with a sweet puppy flesh. "We'd heard someone else may have come poking around your Grove, and that perhaps you might be able to she'd some light on the situation. Anything you can tell us would go a great deal towards helping stop this phenomenon before it hits an irreversible tipping point."

"Wulfram Hinderust of the Winter Knights." Wulfram barks as he thumps his chest in the customary fashion for introduction.
"Yes like companions said on way in we met with fire monsters and were able to destroy one easily...however there was many more. I have sample of fire monster dust if you care to barter." Wulfram speaks to no one in particular as he takes a seat and eyes the food provided. A moment after he gets more settled he takes a small piece of fruit in hand.

Quiet quickly and quietly jumps into the tree and curls up. This is a great spot for a cat nap
