As you get out of the city and across the river, you have a choice to make. Do you turn east early, heading through the foothills before making an ascent directly to the spires or do you continue north by northeast to the mountains and make your trek there.
It's likely that the foothills will be faster and the mountains a bit more treacherous physically.
The foothills will make for a safer physical trip, less chance of falling and such. Likely a slightly faster rate of travel. However, it's not uncommon for bandit tribes and roaming beasts to stalk the same lands for much the same reasons.
Travelling in the mountains will be more dangerous physically and take longer. However, the numbers of creatures trying to kill you there will be much lower.
