OOC:
Vardo is holding action. Ready to shoot at any threat the instant it appears.

Midnight, Yohna, Keavan

All Midnight can tell is that there's a horse carcass that seems relatively freshly killed maybe 3-4 days. It's hard to glean anymore details than that from this distance.

Yohna doesn't notice anything unusual.

As Keavan gets closer and closer he eventually realizes that the "branch" is actually a crossbow bolt stuck in the tree.

"Nobody move, that looks like a crossbow bolt, could be a recent attack site. Anyone any good at tracking?"
Aug 22, 2018 1:01 pm
Vardo wheels to face the direction in which the bolt must have come. Given the age of the carcass, he’s not convinced anyone is laying in ambush, but better safe than dead. He scans the tree line on the other side of the road (behind the group).

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

OOC:
Is Vardo trying to deduce where the bolt must have been shot from or just looking in general direction opposite from the bolt? If the former you should roll Investigation in lieu of Perception.
Aug 22, 2018 1:30 pm
OOC:
The latter. He’s more thinking of worst case scenario and covering the team’s rear. The perception roll (if you need it) was for what he might see in the new direction (the treeline behind them - other side of the road from the bolt).

Vardo looks around the tree lines on other side of the road from the crossbow bolt with his keen eyes and spies nothing unusual or threatening, just some woodland critters. It is seemingly safe.

Breezy, not wanting to lose anymore friends, slowly works toward the carcass, covering Keavan's back. If Keavan stops, Breezy will continue along the right hand side of the road, looking to see if there is anything on the back side of the animal. If he is not attacked, he will slowly get to where he can touch the thing (without actually doing so) and try to determine the cause of death.

Rolls

Breezy Investigation - (1d20+3)

(15) + 3 = 18

Aug 22, 2018 9:24 pm
Breezy carefully approaches the animal (no one attacks) and examines the corpse. Breezy, while examining the carcass, spots a puncture through the animal's upper neck area - clearly the cause of death. Seeing the placement of the puncture and the bolt stuck in the tree, he is able to deduce that the horse was shot with the crossbow bolt leading to its demise. Breezy also spots what looks like remnants of a horse harness around it.

"Looks to me as if they've already vacated this site." Yohna states, the tension leaving her shoulders a little. "I believe this presents us with two courses of action - Either follow the path further still and wait for a presence, or head off the track and follow the trail of that bolt, though there's no telling where we might end up that way."
Aug 22, 2018 10:30 pm
Falka, alive with gleeful anticipation, marches around the would-be attack site. To Keavan's call, she boasts,
"It is the duty of the Knights of Marthammor Duin to track and kill threats to the land." She rubs her badge in pride. Taking a knee, she surveys the ground and trees while reciting a prayer under her breath, "Thard Harr, bless my eyes and ears. Lead me on the earth to my quarry."

Survival - (1d20+2)

(18) + 2 = 20

Although, on the road, there are numerous tracks admixed from usage, after several minutes of careful examination, Falka is able to tease out a pair of wheel tracks that disappears into the woods to the south from near the carcass. Looks like something with wheels was dragged from here.

OOC:
FYI, you can keep tracking into the woods if that wasn't clear.
Aug 23, 2018 9:21 pm
While Falka moves around the area, Breezy watches her, trying to see what she does; how to check for tracks, examine the trail, etc. Her ability to discern the smallest details impresses him greatly, and he casually moves around the horse carcass in a wide circle, keeping his other eye on the lookout for anything trying to sneak up.

Rolls

Breezy Continued Perception of The Area - (1d20+0)

(20) = 20

Aug 23, 2018 10:23 pm
Keavan falls in next to Falka, assisting her with the tracking now the trail has been found.

"Let's do this."
Aug 23, 2018 10:27 pm
Falka whistles and waves one hand in the air.
"Tracks!" she barks, bidding the group come closer. When all are gathered round, she runs her hands along the smooth, regular dents in the earth to indicate the wheel-tracks to the others. "Some kind of barrow or wagon. It's the best lead we've got; I suggest we see where they lead." Falka stays on her knee, continuing to examine the tracks while the others come to a consensus.
OOC:
A few questions about the tracks. Are they smooth, like wooden wagon wheels or is there a tread pattern to them? Are there footprints preceding them, as in a barrow pushed by hand? Or are there hoofprints following them, as in a horse/donkey drawn cart? Can Falka tell how recent they are given weather conditions recently or any other signs? Extra check provided if necessary, ignore if not.

As his compatriots group together, Vardo continues to watch the rear for ambush. He keeps his bow ready but doesn't keep the string taught as he chimes in, "Agreed. Lead on."

OOC:
The wheel tracks are smooth. There are no hoofprints that follow them but there are number of footprints Falka can discern. They're not clear because of the traffic on the road but she can deduce that maybe 4-5 sets of footprints surround the wheel tracks.
As both Vardo and Breezy keep a look out, Falka, aided by Keavan, is able to pick the tracks back up into the woods.
OOC:
Are you guys going to follow the tracks into the woods?

Breezy, like Vardo, keeps his crossbow at the ready, falling into line. He elects to be toward the rear this time, as his ranged weapon can be useful for a longer period of time should they stumble on their quarry.
Aug 24, 2018 4:30 am
Midnight, who has been staring unblinkingly at the dead horse with a white-knuckled grip on her staff, finally blinks and turns her head slowly toward the others gathered near the trail. "Well, it looks like we follow the trail. Obviously not a trap. I bet it leads to a beautiful meadow filled with wildflowers and bunnies. There's probably even the end of a rainbow and a unicorn." She retakes her position in the center of the pack, holding her staff with two hands at an angle in front of her body, ready to whack somebody if need be.
