The Severed Hand

Sep 21, 2018 4:02 am
After a couple of months of work by Oswald himself, and then some recent help from Ras, and with the financial assistance from the party, the airship now stands repaired and whole, as good as the day it was first made. It certainly looks grander than when orogs were poking holes in it a good while back.

Oswald gives the companions a proud tour, complete with safety precautions: Yep, and that's why it's called the poop deck. Just make sure you've always got a safety line secured round you when you're on deck. Many a gnome has learned the hard way that a fall from a great height hits like a sack of turnips....

...The kitchen is fully stocked and last us quite well on our journey. So long as the big guy doesn't have seconds. Ug, is it? Why, I had a grandmother named Ugjene...

...quarters enough for everyone, as you can see. Rather luxurious, too, aren't they? If a bit cramped. But at least we can snore each other to sleep! You know what they say. They family that snores together...

...Oh. Don't mind the cow. Orcus is a permanent member of the ship now. Gotta have a good luck charm on the voyage, you know!

...and here's the furnace room! Whatever you do, don't let this light go out, or you might have to...

...and never EVER touch that button. The Nine Hells hath no fury like a gnome who's had his airship broken AGAIN. Turnip-chafed tiefling...

...and that's it! Always more to learn about this old girl, but we're ready. Let's be off! To... wherever it is you wanted to go. Aherm, yes."
Sep 21, 2018 4:03 am
Oswald gets the ship moving with help from Ras and the party, and Kuldahar starts to shrink beneath them as they drift into the air. Cheers and waves from the Kuldahari fade away Up between the wide branches of the Great Oak they go. Oswald brings the ship around and headed along the course that both Ras and Zenithral confirm to him.

Mountain ridges pass slowly before the companions' eyes, but within a quarter of an hour they know they have already exceeded what they could have managed today on foot.

Crisp mountain air blows over them as they leave the Great Oak's circle of warmth, but with the stunning sights below the adventurers barely notice the chill. For those in the know, it seems that the snow in the passes around Kuldahar is receding. Could it possibly be nearing spring already? The weather has been odd of late...

The party thinks everything will be smooth sailing, but the Spine of the World is safe place even by air. A few hours into the journey trouble rears its ugly, frozen head in the form of a handful of frost giants. The blue-skinned monsters stand around a tall peak, ice-encrusted boulders in hand. A pair of great white bears are nearby, apparently trained for combat by the giants.

The heroes find themselves wondering if these are the same ones who caused that avalanche that killed Hrothgar and so many others of the Easthaven expedition.

As the first rocks come sailing through the air, Oswald squeals, "Don't let them damage the ship! We just got her working again!"

So the giants are conviently hard to get to the first round. You'll have to either attack them ranged this round, or use your action to Dash and get next to them (swinging down from a rope or ladder or some such thing and running up to engage them from the ground.

They are not grouped particularly close together. Check with me and I'll tell you how many you might be able to reach with a given area effect.

Gave up his second level of wizard for another level in fighter
"'Oh, I'll never need that spell, it's never come up before!'" he mumbles to himself. "Well you should have thought of that before you all decided to fly by a rickety, old airship..." He was planning on giving a rallying speech, but now that he's on the ship, he isn't too sure...

...

"Of course! Frost Giants!" Zenithral lets out a nervous laugh as he shrugs off his bow. "My favorite. Mind your own business, will you!"

Not wanting to be knocked off the airship and fall to his death, more than anything, Zenithral glows with radiance and fires off two arrows at the giants below, one of the arrows swirling with darkness.

Giant 1 takes 30 damage and must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be blind to anything further than 5 feet of him for a round. Giant 2 takes 18 damage.

Ras glares at the monsters who dare attack his family. He must protect them! With little thought at a plan, he grabs a rope that dangles below the ship and slides down it to the ground. As he lands he holds out one hand and a fiery sword appears in it. "For my family," he whispers to himself.

Alalla lifts her glaive and aims quickly like she has done dozens of times before. As the glaive leaves her hands she begins to smile with satisfaction, knowing that her aim and technique is flawless. Her golden weapon flies through the air- and strikes a snowbank far from her target.

Al can't even curse as her throat tightens, and her hand drifts up to the black eyepatch she had quickly cobbled together. Gruumsh's gift keeps on giving.

She summons her glaive and throws it again, then pulls out her bow and looses a shot. Her glaive manages to his, but her arrow goes wide. Even her glaive doesn't do the damage it should.

He won't win... He won't!

Al jumps from the airship and rolls into the snow. She runs towards the frost giant she hit, keeping a tight lid on her fury. It seeps through her single eye as she stares the giant down, however, and he knows that though this creature is small, she intends nothing short of his death.

Frost Giant 1 takes 15 damage and must make a wisdom save or be afraid of Al

Fergy hangs back a bit. He follows his companions at a distance. When he's close enough, he pulls out a dagger and pierces the tip of a finger. Just enough to get a few droplets of blood out. His chanting is oddly nonrythmic. The droplets of blood go shooting off toward each of the giants. They seem to be about to fall way short before Fergy expends more energy to push them further. Each blood droplet zooms up and into a nostril.

Giants 1,2,3,and 4 must each make a DC 16 CHA save or take 1d4 dice roll damage on attacks and saves while concentration lasts up to a min.

Round 1 Summary

A volley of frozen boulders spins through the air as the heroes settle into position. Zenithral experiences a brief flashback of pain as one of the uncannily large projectiles bears down on him (Zen casts Shield). Nearby, another boulder clips Fergy's arm (Fergy takes 24 bludgeoning damage), and then continues on to smash into the deck behind him. A moment later Ras is also plastered by a boulder (Ras takes 34 bludgeoning damage), but the gnome - surprisingly resilient, hops right back to his feet. Oswald lets out a shriek of dismay, but slows down the airship enough to let those who prefer to fight on the ground do so. One more boulder sails just in front of the ship's prow, missing it by only a few feet.

The party's own ranged attacks and spells cause two of the giants to roar in pain. Two of them clap massive blue hands to their faces as droplets of blood fly up their nostrils. A strange red cloud appears about their faces, obstructing their view and causing no small amount of confusion (Giants 2 and 3 fail their saves against Bane).

As Alalla, Ras, and Erevain hit the snow and converge on the frost giant (Giant 1), the two polar bears line up on either side of him and rise onto their hind legs in defiance of the party. The giant clutches at his newest wounds and takes a step back from Alalla, fear obvious in his large eyes. As the combatants draw close, the towering monster sets itself to defend its more vulnerable parts (Giant 1 fails its fear save, and this coming round will take the Dodge action).

"Oh dear..." Zenithral says, seeing a boulder flying towards him. He braces himself and twirls his bow in front of him with golden light. The boulder hits it and a shockwave of light bursts outwards, the boulder tumbling down below.

Seeing the first frost giant take a defensive stance, Zenithral focuses his fire on one of the giants affected by Fergy's spell. The ship lurches and the arrow, surrounded by both radiance and shadow, smashes through the bulwark, but a small portal redirects it into the frosty foe. (Frost Giant 2 takes 42 damage and must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be blind to everything further than 5 feet away from it for 1 round.)

"Oh, snapple gobs..." he says looking at the damage he did to the ship. He quickly draws his sword and slashes his line and flies off to the side of the ship, as to draw fire away from their newly repaired vessel. "I'm going to regret this, aren't I?"

Ug grabs a cord of rope and leaps over the side of the ship. As boulders rain about them Ug lands deftly in the snow and rolls straight into a sprint. Charging forward he feels his adrenaline start to surge, as well as a new intense power pulsing through him. His skin takes on a bluish tint as ice crystals appear and stretch across his skin. His eyes are ghostly white pearls of deep snow. Each heart beat sends a chill of frost through Ugs veins and with a scream he lets some of it go. Crystals form along the long handle of Ugs maul and form into cycles of jagged shards of ice at the weapons end. Ug almost stumbles as the ice bleeds from him to the weapon. He keeps his feet however and swings hard as he slams into the nearest giant.

Round 2 Summary

Zenithral's arrows hit home, but as the airship lurches in a gust of wind one of his arrows leaves a smoking hole in the side of the rail. As the archer zips away into the frigid air, he hears a mumbled curse from Oswald. "Turnip-kissing elf putting a hole in my ship..." Zenithral narrowly dodges two more boulders hurled his way, but thankfully these pass nowhere near the airship. He is happy to notice one of the giants staggering around waving a hand in front of its face, apparently blind.

Down below, Alalla stands before the two polar bears. The animals are massive, with crushing jaws and ripping claws, but the party has seen worse. As her glaive flashes again and again, she notices Erevain's shield flicker out to turn aside one bear's head, even as the elf unleashes a magical barrage on the nearby frost giant.

One bear falls, its blood steaming in the snow. The other reaches for Alalla with a huge paw, but it growls as Ras appears, flaming sword digging into the beast's shoulder. The bear whirls on him, leaving a bloody gash on the gnome's chest (Ras takes 13 slashing damage), but before it can do more Alalla's glaive slices cleanly through its neck. As Ras climbs back to his feet, he finds Fergy alongside him, mending both their wounds with a spell. Ras understands somehow that his friend's magic should not be capable of healing, but it is hard to argue when his own injuries vanish before his eyes.

The giant is stung by Erevain's magical blows, but it does not fear the elf warrior. It has much bigger concerns when Ug arrives - or, more poignantly, Ug's hammer. The goliath smashes his crystallized weapon into the giant's knee, and the icy crunch makes the other giants grimace in sympathy. Ug's target nearly topples, but when it regains its balance all fear is gone from its eyes, replaced by the face of a born warrior ready to meet death with weapon in hand.

Just then, a heavy net thrown by one of the other giants falls over Ug, tangling him in heavy knots (Ug is restrained - so can't move around. Attacks have advantage against him, and he has disadvantage on attacks). Now two frost giants stand over him, enormous axes held high.
