Realizing his ride is no longer happy with him, Ug changes tactics. His maul turning into ice once again in his hands, Ug has what is probably the funnest version of whack-a-mole he’s ever played. As each head turns to bite at him, Ug howls with laughter and gives it good old smash of the maul. Chimera takes lethal bludgeoning and cold damage It’s all fun and games til Ug realizes Ug realizes he’s 130 ft in the air and battering his own flying goat. After one last smash Ug yells "bye bye kitty!" and leaps of its back toward the airship. And misses. Beginning to fall, Ugs reflexes kick in and is able to grab a cord hanging over the ship and then hauls himself up over the ledge.

Round 3 Summary

As more flames spurt from the mouths of the chimeras, the airship's deck is beginning to look charred, with small fires sputtering here and there.

And on the deck, heroes and monsters battle for their lives.

Ras is nearly down when he feels Fergy's healing wash through him. How strange that their roles should be reversed like this! The druid becomes a giant eagle and takes to the air, narrowly slipping through the gauntlet of lion claws (Bird Ras takes 24 damage). Just as he leaves, another wave of flame rolls over the spot where he was, and he sees Fergy fall to the wooden blanks, overcome by burns that seem all the hotter without the innate protection of Nessa's tiefling body (Fergy takes 39 fire damage).

Alalla and Erevain strike at the prone chimera, but it shakes them off and begins to rise with a multi-throated bellow. They each receive from painful scratches, but working together they hold their own (Al takes 19, Erevain takes 9).

Nearby, the door to the captain's control room bursts open, and Oswald steps out, goggles pulled over his face. "Burn my ship? Taste my turnip-taser!" He yanks on a thick hose that trails into the control room, and a beam of energy shoots out from the nozzle in his hands. It touches one of the chimeras, and the monster instantly disintegrates into a pile of dust. Oswald stands with a satisfied smile on his odd face, until a blast issues from the control room. "Oops..."He ducks back inside with a curse and slams the door.

Zenithral, alone amidst several of the awful creatures, ends up on his back. Sending easy prey, the nearest chimeras immediately pounce on the fallen archer, maws and claws grabbing hold (Assuming Zen casts Shield, and is knocked to 0 hp). To the half-elf's companions, he seems to entirely disappear beneath the monsters. The deck trembles as several flashes of light burst from beneath the pile of limbs, and one of the chimeras falls away, emitting smoke from its eyes and mouths. The other two chimeras stumble back, and the party sees Zenithral slumped and bleeding from many wounds - most noticeably from his torn throat. If not given healing soon, the half-elf will bleed his life away.

Just then, a muscled hand with marbled streaks of gray clasps the outer edge of the railing, and Ug pulls himself up over the side. The barbarian takes a blast of fire (after resistance, Ug takes 56 damage), but then his eyes flare with intense cold that runs through his arms and into his magical maul. It will take more than that to stop him. Far below, his monstrous steed's corpse crashes into the plains of the valley.

Only three chimeras remain, but two of the party are on death's doorstep. Or perhaps only one... Fergy stirs, somehow finding the strength to stand! (I thought he was out, but it looks like he's at 1 hp?)

Seeing Zenithral go down, Erevain pulls away from Alalla and their opponent heedless of any claws directed at his back. He skids across the charred planks toward Zenithral and utters a spell of healing. Even his small skill in this kind of magic is enough to get the archer back into the fight. "Stand, Zenithral! Your bow is yet needed. If your father is watching, prove to him the warrior that you are!" He turns back to the fight, determined to stand between the wounded archer and the remaining monstrosities.

Zen regains 6 hp, and can take a turn a turn as per normal this round. Erevain will use his reaction to give disadvantage on the first attack against Zen.

Alalla's throat tighten as as she watches Zenithral hit the deck, and she grips her glaive tight as Erevain dashes between teeth and claws to reach him. Some of her stress abates as Zenithral stands. Seeing him waver, she calls out.

"Abyss take your father, Zenithral. Fight! We're here for your mother. We're here for Halla. Fight, Zenithral! They need you. We need you!" She nods to him as he draws his bow, but out of the corner of her eye she sees Fergy stagger.

Keeping her hands firmly on her weapon, instead of checking the fit of her eyepatch like she wanted to, she follows Erevain's example and makes her way across the ship to Fergy's side. She puts herself between him and the monsters, using the reach of her glaive to keep claws, hooves, and teeth away from the dwarf, and leaving bloody gashes behind as rewards for their efforts.

Alalla ripostes and uses rally. Zen gains 7 THP. Chimera 2 takes 29 damage.

Zenithral coughs as Erevain heals him. He staggers to his feet, eyes blurry and monstrous heads surrounding him. Erevain's words don't encourage him, however. If anything, the mention of his father, increases the fear as he draws his sword for defense to flee, but Alalla's words and seeing Erevain put himself in front of the chimeras steels his resolve. He draws an arrow and backpedals towards the cabin door.

He fires carefully through his allies, hitting one chimera in the side, and piercing another in heart. (Chimera 5 takes 7 damage. Chimera 2 takes lethal damage)

Standing up after the flames knocked more beard off Fergy than he had left. "You're going to pay for that."

Fergy tried to shuffle a bit to keep Al between him and the Chimeras.

"STOP or DIE!", Fergy shouts at the stupid creatures.

With great effort long black chains with green fire shoot from both of Fergy's hands. Like snakes one coils around Chimera 3 and the other around Chimera 5. The burning chains so completely wrap the Chimeras that they are no longer visible.

Chimera 3 and 5 take 14 psychic damage and must make a DC 16 INT save or bad things.

Round 4 Sumnary

The companions rally around each other as the last three predators move in, claws clacking on the scorched wood of the airship' deck. The fires are spreading, and cinders float through the smoky air.

Alalla cuts at one of the monsters, intercepting it before it can finish off Fergy. The dragon's head unleashes fires that burn the half-orc warrior, and the other heads batter against her fine new armor (Al takes 35 fire damage and 23 more), but she determinedly refuses to cede ground until Ug catches the chimera from behind, shattering the creature's pelvis. As its back half collapses, Ras descends in a violent flurry of feathers and beak and digs out its heart.

Another chimera launches itself at Ug, lion's claws and beast heads trying to drag the goliath to the floor (After resistance, Ug takes 17 damage), but he manages to shake the monster off.

Quick as lightning, the third chimera catches Ras in its jaws and shakes him until he returns to his gnome form (Ras takes 16), then drops him and darts at Erevain, ram's head butting the elf in the chest hard enough to launch him back several feet (Erevain takes 13). Zenithral's well-placed arrows sting it's hide enough that it withdraws before it can do more harm to Erevain.

Then Fergy's spell rips into the two remaining chimeras' minds, replacing their perception of reality with one of his choosing. The two chimeras immediately go on the defensive, backs arched like cats to make them look bigger, wings rising high, heads all roaring and bleating. Whatever it is that they see, they want to part of it.

Battered by the companions' attacks and confused by the spell gripping their minds, the two chimeras try to escape - but when their six brains explode from mental pressure, it leaves quite a mess on the deck.

For defeating the chimeras, 3,450 XP! Total is 94,440 XP.
Oswald pops out of the control room with a strange contraption in his hands that he compresses to blow air out of a tube, and with it he evicts most of the smoke from the room. This done, he sighs and moves his goggles, then groans at the sight of the airship's planks and railings. "Ah... well. She isn't called the Phoenix for nothing. You all should have seen her the time that Ras' friend pushed the big red button. Turnips for brains, that one. Anywho..." The gnome begins cleaning and tinkering, a good sign that the damage from the airship is not too extreme.

As the companions clear away the chimera corpses, they notice that the ship has drifted somewhat closer to the forbidding elven city. Again they notice how twisted the towers look. Even from this distance, neck hairs stiffen at the sight of it.

The heroes find themselves wondering... What happened there?

The party discusses what their next move should be as they clear the deck of chimera corpses. The battle has taken a lot out of them, but Halla is still out there on her own.

"We'll stop for a rest," Al agrees. She avoids looking directly at any of her party members, especially Ug and Zenithral in their shiny new half-plate. "We need to make it short, though. I don't want Halla to be a cold corpse when we find her because we were lounging."

The party stops to rest, tending to wounds and putting out fires on the airship. Though weary from the day's travel and battles, the heroes are determined to arrive at the Hand soon.

When they have treated everyone's wounds, Oswald starts the ship moving again. Despite all the blackened planks and battered railings, the ship responds smoothly to his deft touch.

When they draw within a half mile of the city, Oswald sets the airship down. "I don't like the look of that place, and we Fiddlebender's have a nose for that sort of thing." He taps one side of his bulbous nose. "Best to keep her here until you lot are done."

They companions continue forward on foot. Here on the ground, the heroes can sense that something terrible happened here long ago. It has the feeling of a battlefield lost to time, as though countless bodies once littered the plains and bled into the earth. Then they arrive at a gatehouse in front of a great, battered drawbridge.
