Ælfric calmly stood next to Julian with a smile on his face.

"Garuda," he said, the only word many of you have heard from him, and his griffon came and sat by his side.

Looking a touch doubtful, "Okay. Whatever you say. Magic some funny stuff for sure. Dang I wish I brought me a keg before leaving."

Looking more at Julian, "So what do you favor. Some elvish wine perhaps?"
Jan 13, 2019 5:25 am
Fernal eyes the griffon, "Might big one you have there. How much that cost you? What is flying like. Never done it."
Jan 13, 2019 5:36 am
Julian, momentarily caught off guard by Fernal's sudden interest in conversation, only smirks at her statements. Ale he could provide on the morrow, though he'd rather not share that news as of yet. As for flight... "I have seen your future, Fernal. You will soon know the feeling of soaring on bird's wings. Of this, I am sure." he says jovially, smirking as he does so.
OOC:
Just to clarify, I did in fact say I was casting teleport via the helm. Hope our DM hasn't been waiting on me this whole time. :P

"Well. That would be a change. Always fancied flying like a bird." Appears Julian has found something of interest to her. "Be like running fast across the plains with a storm brewing. You just feel the wind. You can never run fast enough,. I guess it takes magic."

Korgazhar eyed the barbarian woman's attempt at more casual conversation about food and drink, and gave Hedrek, his majordomo, a flick of his head, and the orog then spoke up, "We can cook whatever it is you intend to catch, and have also brought along rations." To which Korgazhar added curtly in reply to Fernal, "You will enjoy orc cuisine and ale in the safety of camp. For now, watch for enemies." He did not like waiting in the open; teleportation should take but a jiffy to accomplish.

OOC:
Actually, the DM is enjoying the character conversations. :P

" I don't know much about your 'Orc cui..sine', but some ale would be welcome. I need to hunt and get something real to eat." She seems to have trouble with the word. She takes a glace about, not letting her guard down so much.

Alain says:
"Fantastic, I have always wanted to try authentic Orc cuisine. Some might say that the phrase is an oxymoron, but I hope to be proven wrong. The last time I ate with an Orc, his bread was stale and hard as a brick. What kind of game would you need to cook a proper meal?

As for you, Ms. Fernal, I'm sure we can summon you a steed the same way we did for everyone else. I'm not completely sure how it works, something about transferring magic into a receptacle. Julian can explain it when we have the time, he's the scholar of magics, I'm just a practitioner."

OOC: Fernal actually runs faster than horses. When you account in her bonus action Dash. She has an average move of 75'.

Fernal seems to hold a blank face as she listen to Alain. A good chance she didn't understand all what he said.

"Okay. You get me horse. Good. It is easier. Not so tired."
Jan 14, 2019 12:59 am
Korgazhar didn't bother to reply to Alain, so it was left to Hedrek to follow through on the conversation. The orog appeared as brutish as most of his kind, but was clad in finer clothing, and spoke with better manners than you would expect. He seemed to understand intuitively what his master required of him, and in many instances in the past fortnight, spoke on behalf of Korgazhar, his politeness jarring against the guttural quality of his voice.

" Fresh bread will be a problem without a proper oven. And we are constrained by the spices and ingredients my lord permitted us to bring on this journey. But we try our best." The majordomo explained, and was immediately clubbed on the head by the mailed fist of Korgazhar. "You dare blame me!" The half-orc bellowed. "Next time you will personally carry our supplies without a pack mule." Off to the side, Skig the goblin armsbearer cackled in laughter.

OOC:
While moving faster than a horse is fine for very short distances, it is not feasible (without magic or other aid) to Dash continuously over the course of a day's travel. Therefore, taking into account the DMG Chase rules:
[ +- ] Chase Rules: DMG p252
Note that IMO, this is not for combat, but, rather, for chases or extended use of the Dash to travel some distance.

I will be posting later today. Sorry I missed yesterday, but I was forced to go spend time with my family. :D

OOC:
I lied. I had a few minutes and figured I would post now.
With the first group gathered together, Julian closes his eyes, picturing the spot where he wishes to travel. The air around the edges of the group begins to shimmer and glow. An instant later the very space around them collapses into the center, occupied by the helm upon the wizard's head. A slight popping sound can be heard and they are all gone.

While it seems as if time passes excruciatingly slow, it is not long before Julian returns, his eagle form fading away as he lands back among those remaining. Before you can gather, however, Korgazhar's attendant calls out softly. "Giants!"

Moving to take stock of the situation, you see a trio of giants walking along the valley floor, heading to the steading. It looks like, perhaps, a hunting party, as with them are a small pack of wolves; large wolves, at that. They approach the east gate of the compound and you watch it open. The wolves howl and bark as they run in, followed by the three giants.
OOC:
Assuming you stick with the plan.
Gathered once again, Julian concentrates on his destination and the ground beneath your feet suddenly fades away. A nauseating sense of vertigo passes over you, and in an instant you find yourselves standing before a cave mouth. Your steeds are outside, while the party has begun to set up an encampment within.
Jan 14, 2019 2:10 pm
Korgarzhar's squire, Rogmuk, a young half-orc, having gone ahead in the first round of Julian's teleport, rushed out of the cave mouth to assist with Korgazhar's steed and weapons, as if on cue. Korgazhar's himself strode into the cave, muttering irritably, "Giant patrols, with dire wolves. Any longer out there and we might as well just attack them there and then."

Then, a bit more thoughtfully, "Put that teleportation of yours to good use, scout a good spot inside the steading, and then use it to bring us in."
Jan 14, 2019 2:57 pm
Julian laughs a deep, hearty laugh at the orc's suggestion. "Do you read minds, Kirgazhar? I intended to do percisely that." ushering the rest of the group into the cave, he continues "In fact, I intend to do much more. Tonight I cast my eye through the space between us and the steading. I would have us know everything about the giant's base before we make our move. We are here to uncover the individual or individuals responsible for banding these otherwise unallied species of giant together under one banner. Destroying the keep and those inside does us no good if their leader escapes, as anyone powerful enough to unite these giants will continue to be a threat until they are eliminated. I am here to help you identify that threat, and the put us on the most direct and efficient route to eliminating it. For that, we will need all the information we can gather." Julian finds a suitably flat surface, and unpacks his cartographer's tools. "We'll start with a map." he says, as he begins the incantation necessary to conjure his invisible arcane eye, ready to gather as much information as possible while the others make their camp ready for the night.
OOC:
Casting Arcane Eye at 5th level, regaining a 4th level slot due to Expert Divination. I'll send the invisible eye (which has darkvision) the 1 mile distance to the giant's steading, and begin scouting the complex as thoroughly as possible. Based on the eye's movement each 'turn', I should have 42 minutes of useful, undetectable scouting once it arrives. The eye, being able to move through 1 inch openings, should hopefully be able to go to most if not all of the rooms within the keep, flying through cracks between doors, chimneys, open windows and perhaps even locks (since they're giant sized an all). Worst case scenario I have to wait for doors to be opened. The spell doesn't hinder my normal vision, or ability to do things such as draw maps, so I'll describe everything I can see to the party and begin drawing a map of the compound. If I run out of time and the spell ends before I scout the entire keep, I'll do it again, up to 4 times in fact, for a total of 2.8 hours spent scouting the keep over the next 4 hours total counting time to send the eye to the steading.

OOC:
Agreed with your calculation. For the rest, it is basically a mile away, or 5280 feet. At 30 feet per turn, that means 176 turns to get there. With a turn being effectively one action in a 6 second round, it is estimated to take 1056 seconds, or 17.6 minutes to arrive. Rounded up to 18 minutes, that leaves 42 minutes to investigate.
Julian
The casting of the spell complete, your mind reaches out to the tiny eye you have fabricated from the ether. The land around you comes into focus as you send the eye toward the steading, swooping out of the hills and across the land. Several minutes later, the structure looms into view. It is huge, even larger that you had originally thought. You judge that it will take you at least 5 minutes to just circle around the outside of the building one time.
OOC:
If you wish to do that, I will post an outline of the exterior. If not, let me know where you wish to begin investigating. As for the rest of the party, what, if any, actions do you wish to take?
Jan 14, 2019 5:33 pm
Julian thinks it best to start with the exterior, and will begin mapping it on parchment, marking any windows, doors, chimneys, or anything else of note visible from the outside.
OOC:
Throwing in an investigation check, in case you want that. I can't concentrate on this and my own guidence spell, so I'm hoping that Ælfric will be happy to provide. Including that with the roll presuming he has no issue with it.
OOC:
PS: By the way, everyone. Presume I'm willing to cast guidance on you at any time, unless I'm concentrating on another spell. Between Ælfric and I (presuming he's willing to cast it on people too), we'll probably have guidance up for most out of combat checks.

Rolls

Int(Investigation) - (1d20+9, 1d4)

1d20+9 : (5) + 9 = 14

1d4 : (4) = 4

After a few minutes of investigation, you manage to get a solid understanding of the sheer size of the giant steading. Over 300 feet to a side, it has an open area along the northeast side. Through the slats of wood, you make out a dozen or so monstrous wolves that stand fully four feet at the shoulder. Numerous chimneys dot the roof, though the pipes are small, and only someone of extremely small stature would be able to get down them.

At the south side you see the guard tower, and when you pass by you see that there is a lone giant there, sitting and looking out over the landscape. Near him is what looks to be a large cask of ale, which he drinks from.

Ælfric readily blessed the wizard with some Fey fortune. Scouting through hostile territory would be so much easier if Ælfric could learn the Dreamseer's clairvoyant techniques...
